A question of honour DISGRACE, shame and dishonour – these words are often used to indicate that something serious has happened. Often, the deed or action is so bad that it has the potential to bring down the reputation of the doer, his family and depending on the circumstances, his community and country. Therefore, always think before you act; take control of negative emotions like anger, envy and greed so that they won’t lead you down the wrong path. When your reputation is ruined, it will take a long time for others to trust you again. If it is a serious offence, you may not even have the chance to bounce back from it. A New Zealand newspaper made the headlines recently, following its effort to tackle the “epidemic” of drunk driving in Queenstown. It filled its front page with the names, ages and alcohol readings of those convicted of the offence. Almost 100 names were put up. There have been strong reactions both for and against the campaign, which the paper plans to continue for the rest of the year. Do you agree with the practice of naming and shaming individuals? Choose one of these positions: ● Strongly Agree ● Somewhat Agree ● Strongly Disagree ● Somewhat Disagree
Collaborating ● Listen
2 AUGUST 2017
Form groups with those who have chosen the same position as you. Each group will take one corner of the classroom. (Note to teacher: You may further divide them into smaller groups, if too many of them choose the same point of view.)
● Attain goal
● Contribute respectfully
In your groups, discuss the reasons for your stance. Then, appoint a spokesperson to put forward the points and to persuade other group members to change their viewpoints. After every group has presented, it is time for students to raise questions or give rebuttals. Finally, individually, decide if your stance has changed. If so, move to the appropriate corner. Which group has the most members now?

Imagine that you had been tasked with designing a Hall of Fame yearbook featuring four honourable citizens. Who would you feature? Look in The Star for pictures of these individuals. Cut them out and paste them on a sheet of A3 paper. Provide a description of each individual, along with a quote from him. Next, present your yearbook in class.
