learning skills

OUR children are riding the great wave of technology today. They now have facts and procedures at their fingertips. Teachers have to equip their students with a new set of skills that allow them to thrive in today’s global economy. The activities in The Star’s Newspaper-in-Education pullout combine literacy skills with content to build this set of skills. The key below indicates the skills integrated into the activities in this pullout.

MANY of you must be fans of superheroes such as Captain America and the X-Men. If you are, then you must surely have heard of Spider-Man. What was the turning point for Peter Parker, the character whose alter ego is Spider-Man? Here’s a little about the character Peter Parker. Peter is a 15-year-old photographer for his school magazine. While out on an assignment, he accidentally gets bitten by a radioactive spider. He then realises he has amazing abilities like super strength and agility, and the ability to cling to almost any surface. He struggles with this power and abuses it to some extent until a turning point in his life. He loses his Uncle Ben in a burglary gone wrong due to his own lack of concern for events happening around him. Peter recalls his uncle’s last few words: With great power comes great responsibility. So what is responsibility? Can it be replaced with any other words?

Here’s Spider-Man. In groups of four, look in The Star for any other words that can replace this original quote: With great power comes great responsibility. Cut them out and paste them in the blank spaces. Then, pin them up on the classroom notice board and do a gallery walk. Place “stars” on your favourite quotes.

With great ___________________________ comes great _________________________.

The word “responsibility” comes from the word “responsible”. The opposite meaning of the word “responsible” is “irresponsible”. Hence, the opposite of “irresponsibility” is ……………………………….
