The UP Architecture Forum (AF), a duly recognized organization of the College of Arcgurecryre, will be holding <insert awesome AF event>, at <insert venue> this <insert date> Accompanying <Again, Insert Event…> is the release of Tsampektib, the official newsletter of the UP Architecture Forum. This year’s Tsampektib is <insert awesinpiring Tsampektib description>. <insert fond and nostalgic memory of AF as an applicant/member that alumni can relate to> With this, Tsampektib, may the applicants, members and alumni alike <insert inspirational quote> More importantly... ... unlike the message above there is no template to being a member of the UP Architecture Forum. Many people may generalize the members of AF as being rowdy, maingay, or gago, but like any family, it is composed of a diverse group of people. More than its event and achievements, it is the members, the AF family, that makes the organization special.

I’m certain that nothing is better than the experiences and moments we have with the members of our beloved organization. From the moment of our application, our experiences with AF has taught. Within the pages of Tsampektib 2015, we hope to look back and glimpse at the different moments and experiences of the different members throughout the years and how these experiences shaped them into who they are now.

Out of all the different AF quotes I can use to tend this message, I believe that there is one that will resonate throughout the different generations of AF members.

DECONSTRUCT 2014 The pairing that created an international spinoff to Lakbayan

hantasm: stepping out of reality and entering into one’s fantasy; falling into the chasm of people’s illusions and dreams coming into reality. Phantasm: Deconstruct 2014, brought out people’s wildest dreams.

On September 27, Hyve was not only filled with casual party-goers but also Arki students who came a long way to have a fantastic night. I was one of those Arki students. I remember that AF started the program with games, the host randomly pulled out people from the crowd and that left me in the spotlight of the dance floor with other individuals. The game was suck

and blow and it was my first time coming across the game. Though, in the end it was fun and after our set, strangers became instant friends.

After the program proper, that was when the real partying happened.

Lights flashed around the place, hard liquor and other drinks was served, and people in the party were losing their grip on reality.

You’d think everything would completely go astray, but instead, it merely amplified the effect of the night.

The colourful lights and upbeat music exhilarated the attendees and the alcohol electrified their souls bringing out each and every person’s wildest dreams.

TSAMPEKTIB 2015 Everyone was simply dancing without a care for the time and place. Sooner or later, things started mellowing out as I and other new friends settled and formed lasting memories of our first college par- ty The Deconstruct party was definitely a night to remember, a dream not to have ended and fantasies that might have been too shortlived, that left everyone with only memories of their phantasm.

LAKBAYAN IN INTRAMUROS

n October 25, 2015, the UP Architecture Forum and its ap- plicants (Batch 2014A) journeyed into the Walled City of Intramur- os for Lakbayan. The adventure began with a group picture at the Arki sign. Afterwards, a convoy of vehicles brought the group to In- tramuros, during which members and applicants alike got to get to know each other more. Once within the Walled City, Academ- ics, Research, and Culture Direc- tor, Kyle Babst, led a tour of the historic sites located nearby such as the Manila Cathedral, Casa Manila, and Fort Santiago.

The tour was very informative and interactive. Plenty of ques- tions were asked by the appli- cants, and many discussions were held. Topics varied from Filipino Architecture, heritage conservation, and old construction meth- ods. Aside from learning about history and our heritage, new concepts were also learned such as ice cream served in bread and shooting and editing a video on a tricycle.

After hours of walking under the sun, in the shade, and inside air conditioned rooms, the day con- cluded with a fun activity for the applicants to synthesize what they learned. They expressed themselves Filipino Architec- ture style on a designated page of their sigsheets.

Afterwards, more pictures were taken against the scenic sky atop the walls of Intramuros. As the sun set, the Lakbayan concluded, leaving the attendees with an unforgettable experience and stronger bonds strengthened even more by the succeeding celebration dinner.

PRIDE IN THE PAST HOPE IN THE FUTURE words by Batch 2014B

S

treets decorated with cobblestone and buildings that withstood the tests of time all under the clear skies, unob- structed by the high-rise structures of today, are what you’d expect from a trip to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar. This 400-hectare open-air museum and heritage park in Bagac, Bataan is where the Lakbayan of batch 2014B was held. It includes 30 different ancestral hous- es that have been resting here for more than 12 years but was only opened to the public in 2010.

Las Casas showcases both Filipino craftsmanship and building skills and represents the distinct mixture of dif ferent design influences outside the country. The variety of houses shows off the diverse architectural styles during the colonial period, giving local and non-local people a chance to ap- preciate our Filipino culture and architecture.

It doesn’t solely focus on the design of the houses, but also how the furniture and the interior were incorporated in order to blend into the era. Las Casas is actually a good educational trip for stu- dents to expose themselves more to the Philippines’ history through these his- torical sites . Not only will they focus on the past, but will learn to appreciate how the designs before have influenced throughout the years since today.

There were exhibits that showed different tools, furniture, equipment, and pictures from the past and some houses had very unique historical backgrounds. The staff was dressed in traditional costumes, which contributed to the vibe of the heritage site.

What sets Las Casas apart from visiting old houses in other parts of the country is that the collection of old buildings in one vicinity makes you feel like being put in the middle of a town in the Spanish era. Placing your- selves here feels like stepping into the Hispanic era. It was interesting to see all the Spanish influences in architec- ture and learning how these contrasts to the structures we have today. It was a refreshing break from all the buildings in the city.

There may be modern structures in our era now, but it is still important to look back from where we came from, despite all the other influences that have dominated our ideas and culture now. It is significantly more convenient for us to see and learn about the

history and culture that each household, since they are brought together in one site. Each of the houses had historical and sentimental value in the country’s his- tory.

The houses, though maintained well, are taken from their inhospitable environment and preserved in Bataan. This action is questionable to some. While others say that taking them out of their context makes the house lose some of its meaning, others say that if they stayed in their original environment there wouldn’t have been any house at all.

Preserving the houses is important but it is somehow ironic that they take the houses out of their original com- munities to “preserve them”. Some of the buildings were converted into hotel accommodations and hotel facilities. Seeing the interior of a house convert- ed into a lobby or a restaurant and see- ing one of the many air conditioners and flat-screen TVs in houses built in the 18th and 19th centuries leaves you feeling a bit off and wondering wheth- er the heritage can still be appreciated fully. Making people stay in those heritage houses all the more

makes them subject to further destruction.

The Filipino setting with the sea and sky as its backdrop is already incredible on its own but what the venue misses are the buildings being used for their purpose to a bigger number of people. The venueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exclusiveness takes away the chance to have a living and breath- ing community interacting with the truly beautiful setting.

They are doing a good thing by re- storing old houses and heritage sites because these allow us to appreciate Filipino architecture and culture by giving us direct access to these heritage sites. However, moving the houses to another location does take away a piece of its authenticity.

It would have been better if they retained the houses in their original loca- tion, but then itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s doubtful if it could be preserved

just as well. The tour guide mentioned that the state most of the houses were found in were pretty bad, most of them fell into disuse or became informal settlement areas. Transferring the houses to their current location at least puts them under better maintenance.

Through this Lakbayan, we were able to appreciate and learn more about our history and culture, as well as Philippine Architecture. The trip to Las Casas was a memorable one because of that. Las Casas does give you a good look at Filipino architecture and gives you a taste of what life back in those days was like. It was a place where pride in the past is uphold and hope for the future emerges.

A DAY OF GIVING words by Gabriel Mejia (‘14A)

I

t was the afternoon of December 18, 2014, in the small town of Nova- liches in Quezon City where the UP Architecture Forum brought joy and cheer as it held the annual Bigay Kaya event to open the season of giving. AF, with the help of UP Circle of Landscape Architecture Students (UPCLAS), which was our partner for Socialight, welcomed the children of the Mind Your Rights Foundation (MY Rights) in Rockville Subdivision to promote change and educate the children of their rights.

It all started with a warm welcoming message from the chairperson Mr. Francisco ‘Chico’ Garcia. The children were then group with AF members and partook in games, such as cheerdancing, newspaper dance, and balloon racing, after which prizes were given away to the little ones. Amidst all the fun and games, an intermission number was performed by Ms. Adeli Manuel as she beautifully and enthusiastically sang famous Christmas songs like Have Yourself a Merry Little Christ- mas for the kids to enjoy and dance upon.

A short jolly dance, prepared by the new members, then followed to pump up the kids from the ex- hausting games that they played. A hefty meal of spaghetti, hotdogs, and orange juice was served by the AF members for the kids of M.Y. Rights.

After the kids and parents ate, the children were then given coloring books about their rights as children, which was illustrated

by Mr. Pon- cho Rulloda, for them to color and decorate with the school supplies, also provided by AF and UPCLAS. As Bigay Kaya came near to an end, a gift giving program handled by the MY Rights Foundation with the help of AF and UPCLAS took place in order to give the children both a remembrance and a token for this meaningful celebration.

A heart- warming message was then delivered to officially end the program, which truly brought joy and satis- faction to the children’s faces and hearts and made them remember that it is indeed a season of giving.

It was truly a memorable celebra- tion, which surely left an imprint in their hearts, both for AF members and the little boys and girls from the M.Y Rights Foundation.

ARKWIZ x FLIP

A

s the stage sets, the challengers await the battle that will put them on the top – Arkwiz 2015: Ancient Architecture.

NISMED Auditorium was filled with professors, spectators, and representatives from 16 different schools with over 32 teams in hope of bringing home the tro- phy and reaping the fruit of their toil last February 28, 2015. The UP Architecture Forum hosted the coveted interschool quiz bee with the theme: Ancient Architecture; the event was co-presented by: UPD-Of- fice for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts (UPD OICA); Wilcon Depot, BluPrint Magazine, Datem Inc., Boysen Paint, and Unilever as major sponsors; BCI Asia, RCBC Savings Bank, and FuturArc as mi- nor sponsors; When In Manila, Arkishop, Archikonst, Click the City as media spon- sors; and is supported by: BIG B Burgers, Jomar’s Art Supply, and Bookmark.

TSAMPEKTIB 2015 Arkwiz, on its 31st year, The UP Archi- tecture Forum decided to scale it up with setting up its theme within a wider context that touches history one way or another; Ancient Architecture is furthered by: Pre- historic, Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman Architecture as they circle on the main theme.

It focuses on the high- lights of the ancient times such as nota- ble features, construction methods, materials, famous structures, and their over-all connection with history. In guidance, architects: Gerard A. Lico PhD, Dolores Madrid, and Angel Sales were present to oversee the event.

The event itself was reminiscent of theancient times, hosted by: Ronn Arada in Egyptian Pharaoh costume and Oliver Barcarse in Greek God costume, and Lawrence Racho in Roman Gladiator costume; with their quirks the event came together. It is also worth noting that the UP Singing Ambassadors’ performance that put everyone in awe also left the walls of the auditorium with reverberating life; Ms. Adeli Manuel’s performance also uplifted the crowd with a modern twist in an an- cient setting.

Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) emerged triumphant as they top the competition and bagging 30,000 PHP. Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology (EARIST) also came home triumphant as both their teams bag second and third place with 20,000 PHP and 10,000 PHP respectively. All participants and lucky people from the audience received a gift that contains magazines from FuturArc, BluPrint, and Archikonst, as well as gift packs from Wilcon Depot.

Magazines, published books, design brOchures, encyclopaedia, and other notable published works were sold highlighting the glory of Architecture.

The exhibition took place in UP College of Architecture Juguilon Hall Atrium with BluPrint and FuturArc booths set up, Bookmark and Archikonst published materials were also sold, BigB Burgers as the main confectionary, and Jomar’s supplied architecture drafting materials for the benefit of the students.

That marks the 31st year of Arkwiz – epic.

he UP Architecture Forum has commenced a mission, codename Asintahan, to start a competition that provoked teams of five architecture students and alumni eliminate each other in the game, Counter-Strike. The organization synced mission Asintahan during AF week when the members revealed their identity to the world. According to our intelli- gence, this unarmed organization of architecture students has been doing this mission since 1983. They have already gained enough momentum and it will be hard to stop them now. The head of this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s operation is David Joshua Reyes. Several factions joined the game, in- cluding a group from foreign organizations, the applicants and members of the UP Architecture Forum. The mission commenced inside College of Architecture Building 1.

Different squads played for glory. Flaffy Birds (14A), AFengers (13) and Agondildos (elders and alumni) from AF, and some from foreign organi- zations showcased their teamwork, strategy and skills. Agondildos, led by Juancho, slaughtered every hos- tile contenders and won the compe- tition.

According to our inside source. The UP Architecture Forum launches Asintahan every semester.They are commencing this event to provide leisure time and experience among architecture students and profes- sors. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Asintahan was Counter-Strike, a first person shoot- er game in a virtual closed quarter location. And so the organization plans to continue the mission Asin- tahan, to have fun and gain funds. That is all. Out.

AF WEEK SYMPOSIUM 2014:

BUILDING WITH EARTH

n the afternoon of October 2, 2014, the university’s architecture community put down their plates and drafting materials and gathered inside the college’s Museum of Filipino Architecture (MoFA) to hear from Architect Sudarshan V. Khadka, a UP Diliman BS Architecture Cum Laude graduate who is also an AF alum- nus, about an essential architectural conservation project he per- formed with his colleagues in the country of Cambodia.

“Building with Earth” was the introductory line in the talk’s pre- sentation as it perfectly resonates the featured project’s aspiration of producing conservative but quality wise structures that are from the earth, on the earth, and especially with the earth. The speaker talked about the study of creating building materials out of bamboos and earth.

themselves along with the Cambodian locals. Mr. Khadka shared their experience on both the hard and the fun labors. They made holes through tough bamboo stems and mixed earth with their bare feet among many others. All in all, the teamwork paid off. Baked bricks made from the earth and smartly stacked bamboo systems were proven robust partners that can be used to build shelters that can withstand intense environmental conditions.

Mr. Khadka stated in the end that quality does not equate to cost. Nowadays, construction becomes a major threat in the preservation of our beloved planet. This study dis- covered a bud of mutualism between earth and construction. Let this bud bloom through the future brightness our minds can access.

THE INNOVATIVE MINDS in FILIPINO DESIGN

lterchitecture (from the words ‘Alter’ and ‘Architecture’ combined): An Ideas Competition on Architectural Innovation’ is an event by the United Architects of the Philippines Student Auxiliary – UP Diliman Chapter (UAPSA) and was partnered by the UP Architecture Forum (AF). It is a design competition amongst different schools about developing the environment through progressive designs.The competition also show- cases the various, creative young minds that illustrate their ideas in in- novating progressive and sustainable structures. The designs of the partic- ipants demonstrate what a Filipino School of 2040 would look like with

the use of their creativity. Moreover, this is to make the architecture stu- dents be more involved on the different processes in seeking for an inno- vative design, and how the Filipino contemporary way of living is incorporated, which is also for long-term solutions to the environment.

The speakers during that day were Architect Gabriel Limgenco and Architect Jason Buensalido, both of whom expressed about some processes on how a design is achieved and how to sustain these progressive designs. For Architect Limgenco, thoroughly discussed on how designs were created – by building on cre- ating a design

TSAMPEKTIB 2015 concept first before translating it into a design.

The design concept is the back-bone in creating a design that wants to be achieved. On the other hand, Architect Buensalido, expressed his passion over Filipino Architecture and the many cli- ents he rejected due to the disparity on their preference of architectural style. He created a modern twist to his designs from the old Filipino Architecture, such as the Bahay na Bato, into an upgraded version of it.

The winners of Alterchitecture, all from the Universiy of the Philippines-Diliman, showcased the school of 2040 through their design called ‘Instituto’ which was able to establish a clear foundation of how the prob- lem should be addressed and how it is incorporated into their design. From what I recall, most of the structures were inspired from geometric designs and how they still give im- portance in adapting to the environ- ment.

As a Landscape Architecture stu- dent, the Symposium and Alter- chitecture gave me an opportunity, not only to focus on my field, but also learn more about Filipino Design in Architecture and how I will also apply this is my plates. Just like how Alterchitecture wants to promote through its thought processes for designers – speculate, break, and innovate.

IN TRANSIT words by Angel Gayatin (â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;14A)

apekonomiya is an event organized each semester by the UP School of Economics Student Council and the UP Economics Towards Consciousness (ETC). It tackles current controversial issues in the form of an educational forum. AF was an organizational partner of the most recent discussion, which was held last March 6, 2015 at the GT Toyota Auditorium. The topic at hand was the MRT/LRT fare hike and the overall situation of the Philippine public transportation system. With qualified guest speakers comprised of engineers and officers, the discussion was able to shed light on the issue and suggest possible solutions. It was the perfect top- ic for AF to take part in as knowledge about our ever growing metropolis and its need for a more efficient and effective transportation system will propel AFâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s objectives forward. The fare hike implemented on Janu- ary 4, 2015 may seem excessive but they claimed that it was a result of several fac- tors such as the outdated fare scheme, rehabilitation

and upgrading costs, and the accessible debt fund. Though the main controversy was in the amount of validity and truth in those statements, the highlights of the discussion were the insights about the transportation system. It needs improvement and quite a lot of it. From architects, engineers, landscape architects and urban plannersinnovation is needed in order to improve the entire situation. From the start of the operations, there was already a lack in working capital. Now, they pro- pose that aside from the 12 peso fare, another 48 be added in order to com- pensate and aid the debt. However, the people do not see any improvements in the system so the increase is almost unjustifiable. The system is very flawed as the train lines do not reach a broad enough scope of places and the jeeps cannot carry the volume of passengers in the metro. This, the speakers suggest- ed, is a result of poor planning and a lack of the proper large-sized vehicles such as buses. Being aware of this, AF will be able to better educate its mem- bers and spread its principle of serving the Filipino people.

rganized by the UP Softball Var- sity Team and held in the second semester,theSlowpitchtournament gave members a chance to forget about acads, let off steam and show off their “skills”.

Whether through sheer, crazy luck or pure athleticism, AF did not disappoint.

A memory comes to mind when Noel Castro came to bat against the UP Mountaineers. Though AF’s skills were on par with many of the different participating organiza- tions, the members’ physicality was enough to put a handicap on the UP Architecture Forum’s success in the games. Even with these odds, we somehow managed to trail behind their score, and eventually getting the chance to overtake them. And Noel took that chance.

Bases were loaded, there were two outs, and it was his turn to bat. No one expected anything; he just came from

class, rushed to the field just so we had enough members to play. But he had guts. Firmly, he took the bat and took his place near the homeplate. His eyes, glaring at the pitcher, like a hawk waiting for his prey. And then, the pitcher lobbed the ball. Floating through the air, anyone could tell that he had to hit that ball. So he prepares his bat, gripping it tightly, and then swings with all his might.

Everyone paused. It was the crispest hit we’d heard all day, and the ball soared through the air. Quickly, the runners ran, Noel taking first, then second, then third. But the ball was com- ing back. The pure physical fitness of the Mountaineers somehow caught up with the ball. Yet they couldn’t keep up with his ambition. He sprinted from third to home. A homerun! It seemed like victory was within our reach. Unfortunately, the next few innings were brutal, and the Mountaineers proceeded to win by a large margin.

With every other game being as intense as this, the AF members made sure to give their all despite the prowess of the competition. But hey, at least we had fun.

ENVIRUNMENT words by Tonic Madulid (‘14A)

I

n partnership with the UP Circle of Landscape Architecture Students (UPCLAS), AF joined in their 25th Anniversary fun run dedicated to contributing to Haribon Foundation and the victims of typhoon Yolanda in Tacloban. In line with their theme of being limitless, they came up with this bigger, better and grander event.

It was a lazy Sunday afternoon on the 21st of September. The normal collegiate scene was playing along the academic oval with cars moving around as people walk and talk. The warm breeze was making everyone everywhere dull and idle - every- where but in front of the University Theater. Everyone there was busy pumping up for the race that’s about to start. UPCLAS member MJ Mon- terubio and UPCLAS and AF member Juancho Agoncillio were hosting as they liven up the crowd and prep them for what’s about to begin. Race instructions were being told along with the new segment that was in- troduced – starting with 5 leaves on your singlet, the most number of leaves you can steal, grab or fight for through the course of the race will win you an additional prize.

The energy was racing through everyone as loud cheers and refreshing drinks were being passed around. Upon calling for the participants to line up, everyone was divided into 3km, 5km and 10km runs. With almost 300 participants, the line stretched to the entire width of Osmena Ave. As soon as the starting trigger was pulled, a sea of people in green raced through the course of run. With heartbeats matching every step, it was fairly easy to get into the zone. As added thrill, UPCLAS also included obsta- cles along the way which also gives away additional leaves.

Towards the end, all the runners were greeted with congratulatory smiles and a pic- ture for finishing.

This environmentally and social- ly relevant event was given more purpose since all its proceeds will go into helping replenish our forest with native trees and help the reha- bilitation of Tacloban by supporting the “Adopt-APlayground Project” which aims to build playgrounds for schools affected by Typhoon Yolan- da. J, like every other child, has the right to dream for a better future. - This was the theme of last year’s much anticipated tree lighting event, Socialight, done every year in the UP College of Architecture aimed at giving awareness to social issues in the Philippines today through donating to chosen beneficiaries. On December 5th, The UP Circle of Landscape Architecture Students (UPCLAS) and L Arch 23 classes, to- gether with Environmental Design Studio and the UP Architecture Forum (AF), made it possible to let the youth’s voice be heard and help make their dreams happen.

The program, hosted by Mr. MJ Mon- terubio, started with introductory re- marks by Dean Mary Ann Espina led by a video featuring some Filipino kids sharing their passions and dreams. There were also intermission numbers by Arki students who entertained the crowd with Christmas songs and medleys.

Rights Foundation - the chosen beneficiary of the event. M.Y. Rights is a non-profit organization that focuses on promoting children’s rights as well as their growth in spirit and support in education. Bagual encouraged the people to know more about the situa- tion of our Filipino youth today how other Filipino children are deprived of something they should be allowed to have such as proper nutrition and ed- ucation.

He strongly believes in their importance in shaping the nation and how a simple act of help could make a big difference. Right after, the count- down for the tree lighting finally began. People were amazed by the beautiful lanterns made by the L Arch students. Socialight ended with closing remarks by the heads of the event.

All the money donated and earned was given to the children of M.Y. Rights Foundation through school supplies and other educational materials during AF’s Bigay Kaya.

COULD YOU KILL YOUR OWN AFAMILY MEMBER?

With the same concept inspired by the book/ movie “Battle Royale”, AF members are thrown in a dystopian post-apocalyptic setting. The air filled with dread, the UP Oblation statue crumbled down in shambles, and everything in the campus seemed to be in ruins. Members were made to fight against each other to get an ultimate prize.

injo Estioko was one of the founders of UP Architecture Forum. He is currently an animator, quite known internationally, and has been working in the business for decades. Up until now, he creates and designs storyboards covering over a thousand panels. His creations include cartoons and animated shows from Ireland, Australia, Germany, to name a few, and not to mention, he was part of the original Rugrats team when it won an Emmy in the 1990s, as well as being the head storyboard maker for the children’s TV series, Peter Rabbit, whose some episodes won three Emmy awards last year.

Si Anna ‘yan, and Ricky, and Elmer Mercado. They were radical then.

Talagang rally rally. Si Julie Dacanay, young barkada niya noon sina Malou Mangahas, si Leah Alejandro… the latter was shot in a cinema. Leftist. So you can imagine what kind of people founded AF. What we wanted before, that instead magserve sa mga multinational, we will serve the people, the masses… the Filipino people.

Pano po ba samahan ng members dati?

Tulungan talaga. An instance, I went to Australia recently, and there are AF members based there now, apparently.

And they really tried looking for us. Imagine the foundation that was built to have that.

30 years after. At yung kwentuhan namin, ganun parin. Kapag thesis season nun, pagkatapos ng isang thesis presentation, hindi kami uuwi. Tutulungan namin yung iba pang AF members.

Ano po ba tatak AF, from a founding member?

Kanya kanyang tatak. Nasasainyo talaga. Ang AF ang magiiwan ng tatak sainyo, tapos kanya kanyang dala kung ano yung na-experience ninyo. Pero magandang foundation ang AF. Do you have anything to say to the current AF members and the future AF members?

Mag-aral, at maging maabilidad at huwag mag swapangan. Maganda young idealistic ka, pero merino yung kalaban mong reality eh. Maganda kung pagsasamahin mo.

Like si Anna Gonzales, na nag damming offers from abroad and yet she chose to stay here and work in Urban Planning. She took her post graduate degree in America or Europe, I forgot, but she chooses local projects.
