General-elect

Commissioner Lyndon Buckingham talks to Captain Jo Moir about being elected the next General

Kia ora! You’ve just been elected as our next General. Are you surprised? Are you shocked? Or are you determined?

Probably there’s a mixture of all those things.

Yes, I think nobody comes expecting, but I think we all come with a mindset of making ourselves available to the will of God, ready to do what the Lord wants us to do. So I didn’t come with any end game in mind. But I did come willing to participate in whichever way was appropriate. And so, I’m feeling a little overwhelmed, but humbled, grateful for the support of the members of the High Council and their endorsement.

Commissioner Yusak Tampai, the High Council chaplain, had the golden bowl of prayers in the chamber. And it was just a visual reminder of thousands of Salvationists

who not only prayed leading up to the High Council week but prayed us all the way through. You know, if I was reflecting on a highlight of the council itself, it would be just the spirit within the chamber, just a beautiful sense of the presence of God. Although feeling overwhelmed, and all of those things, I also feel that we have allowed the Lord to reveal what he wanted to happen and we’ve participated in that, and I take comfort from that. I’ve had a wonderful endorsement from the members of the High

Council, and I receive this as from the Lord. And I will serve, and I’m grateful because Bronwyn is right there with me. We will share this ministry together, and we’ll try and serve the Lord and serve the Salvation Army. And yes, actually, I’m a little bit excited about the opportunity.

We know you as a family man – a dad and a granddad and, very recently, a new grandbaby. Have you had time to connect with them? How do they feel about this?

You know, the amazing thing is that my family is 18,000km away from this venue. So they’re a long way away, physically. But in a little room off the side of the chamber I could FaceTime with them. So it was the middle of the night for them, but they were all awake and we’ve had an opportunity to share with both my son and daughter-in-law and my daughter and son-in-law, and the grandkids. I just thank God for them because they have been so positive. I mean, we’ve already been away from our homeland since 2013. So you know, we’ve already done a decade. They have been so supportive of us in fulfilling God’s calling on our lives. And so to be able to see them on the screen, and have them go, ‘Go, mum and dad!’ It’s just been absolutely wonderful.

We were also able to connect with Bronwyn’s parents, lifelong salvationists, now in their

REAPING THE LORD'S HARVEST

Jesus said to his disciples, 'The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few'. Found in Matthew 9:37, carries this simple yet profound statement of timeless significance, urging us to reflect on the importance of evangelism and the responsibility as followers of Christ to spread His message of love, redemption, and salvation.

The imagery of a bountiful harvest conveys a sense of abundance and opportunity. Just as a farmer rejoices in a fruitful harvest, so should we rejoice in the abundance of souls ripe for the gospel and ready for harvesting for the work of the Lord. Jesus saw the vastness of humanity, lost and in need of a Savior. He knew that countless hearts were ready to receive the good news and be transformed by the grace of God. The harvest Jesus speaks of is not confined to a specific time or place; it extends across generations and nations, encompassing every soul on Earth.

Yet, alongside the picture of a plentiful harvest, Jesus acknowledges the scarcity of labourers. While there is an abundance of souls ready to receive the gospel, there are few workers dedicated to sowing the seeds of truth and reaping the spiritual harvest. This scarcity of labourers remains a challenge even in today's world. Many are called to be disciples of Christ, but only a few respond wholeheartedly to the call for active evangelism. 'Who then will go and work willingly for the Lord?'

The call to be labourers in the Lord's harvest is not just for pastors, missionaries, or evangelists. It is a call for every believer to participate in the great commission. Each of us can play a part in sowing seeds of faith, love, and compassion in the lives of those around us. Our actions, attitudes, and words

can be powerful witnesses to the transforming power of Christ's love.

The world today, much like in Jesus' time, is filled with brokenness, despair, and hopelessness. People are seeking purpose, meaning, and fulfilment in their lives. Many are burdened by sin, guilt, and shame. The need for the gospel is as urgent as ever. As followers of Christ, we are called to be the light that dispels darkness, the hope that overcomes despair, and the love that conquers hate.

We might wonder how ordinary individuals can significantly impact in such a vast and complex world. The key lies in our willingness to respond to the call and take small steps of faith. Our actions need not be grandiose; even the simplest acts of kindness can be like seeds sown in fertile soil. A smile, a helping hand, a listening ear, or a word of encouragement can go a long way in revealing the love of Christ to those around us. Furthermore, we should not underestimate the power of prayer. Prayer is a powerful tool that connects us to the heart of God and aligns our desires with His. When we pray for the lost, the broken, and the hurting, we invite God's presence and His work of transformation into their lives.

To be effective labourers in the Lord's harvest, we must also be attentive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit guides us to the right people at the right time, enabling us to speak words of truth and life that penetrate the hearts of those who hear. Our efforts, combined with the work of the Spirit, can lead to remarkable spiritual breakthroughs in the lives of others.

In conclusion, Matthew 9:37 serves as a timeless reminder of

the abundant harvest awaiting the workers of the Lord. As followers of Christ, we are called to be those workers, sowing seeds of faith and reaping souls for the Kingdom.

Let us embrace this divine

calling with humility, compassion, and obedience. Through our actions, prayers, and reliance on the Holy Spirit, we can make a significant impact on the world around us, participating in the glorious work of bringing the lost into the loving embrace of their Savior. May we heed the call and become faithful labourers in the Lord's plentiful harvest.

Let us begin by saying, 'Here am I, Lord send me.'

The Territorial Commander's Harvest Message 2023

Commençons par dire : « Me voici, Seigneur, envoie-moi ».

80s, so they were still up in the middle of the night, ready to receive our call. And of course, they were also, you know, overwhelmed and, naturally, very proud.

Tell me a little bit about how you came to faith in Christ and how you were called to officership. When I was about six or seven years of age, my parents took me to a Salvation Army congress. And at the end of the meeting, somebody from the platform said, ‘If you would like to meet Jesus, come down to the front.’

So I went down to the front, fully expecting to meet Jesus. I knelt at the mercy seat. After a little while, there was an arm around my shoulder. And I thought, ‘This is Jesus.’

When the person started talking, I said to myself, ‘Sounds like my uncle Wes…’ So I took a look – and it was my uncle Wes! And, although I was only six or seven years of age, I was disappointed, because I’d gone with an expectation that I was going to meet Jesus. And what I got instead was my uncle.

And so it created a little bit of doubt, in a small boy’s mind. And from then on, I was a child who was sort of going through the Army ranks and going through the motions. I became a junior soldier. I even became a senior soldier. But I don’t think I would be able to testify at that point that I had any real experience of my own.

That changed for me on 12 August 1979, as a 17-year-old at a youth councils. It was in that meeting that the realisation of God’s love for me in the person of Jesus Christ absolutely came alive. I mean, I just burst with this understanding. It was more than just mental. It was in my heart, it was emotional. I was full of repentance, I was full of sorrow, I was full of joy. It was like, ‘It is real! It is for me!’

So I made my way down to the mercy seat. And it’s a strange thing. I was crying and I was laughing. And I had all of these emotions going on at the same time. The love of God burst into my heart. That’s what happened for me.

And I came into a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ and, I believe, an experience of the Holy Spirit. And so impactful was it for me that I didn’t wait to be called to be an officer.

Before that meeting was over, I signed a little candidates covenant that you tore in half, and kept for yourself and gave the other half to the candidates’ secretary.

I still have that piece of paper in my Bible.

One of the things that will be very important in your role is to be an inspiration and an influence. Who influenced you?

I have had so many influences that it would be difficult for me to name them, but I would say faithful Salvationists who took an interest, who took time to listen, who were honest as I was growing up, local officers that put an arm around and said, ‘Come on, get back into line.’ They were very, very helpful in my upbringing.

My own parents I would have to give testimony to – my officer parents who loved us and trained us in the ways of the Lord. A huge influence. These are people the Lord sends along to help us in our spiritual journey, and our discipleship maturing. They shape us, you know, and I’m grateful.

There have been many, many influences. And I thank God for every one of them.

I asked some of the young people from my corps what they would like to ask the General-elect. This is what they wanted to know: what would your schoolteachers say if they could see you now?

They would not believe it! I think that, even if my father was still alive, he wouldn’t believe it either. So I think I will have confounded them, because I was not a good student.

By necessity, your speech to the High Council is kept private. It’s not shared with the Salvation Army world. What one thing, though, would you want to share with your Salvation Army family today?

I think one thing that I would feel very confident in sharing – because it’s not confidential – is that I expressed my love for what I call the three big ideas of the Movement.

By that I mean, one: we are a people that love to talk about Jesus. We want people to know that God loves them and that Jesus is the ultimate proof of that love.

And so I love the fact that The Salvation Army has always been about recognising our responsibility to share the good news of the gospel, that God loves them, that Jesus is the proof, and that welcome is available through him.

I would pray that Salvationists all around the world would find it very natural and easy to be able to speak to others about their personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the transformation that he has made in their lives.

That’s a big idea of this Movement. We want people to know the good news that there is a life, there is purpose and there is

6

hope and there is eternity, through faith in Jesus Christ. And if we could get excited about that, around the globe, think about the impact of that.

Another big idea of the Movement is that we think that practical demonstrations of the values of the Kingdom of God are as impactful as talking about them.

And so the sleeves rolled up, the caring for the needy, the helping the vulnerable, the being the voice for the voiceless, the advocating for justice, the going after the things where people are being in some way, tortured or separated or rejected. That we as a Movement go to those places, we put our sleeves up, and we say, ‘We don’t want to just talk about God’s love. We want to show you guys the soup, soap and salvation that has been our history.’

And I would love it if Salvationists would get this idea that, actually, I can do that. I can knock on a neighbour’s door and say, ‘Is there any way I can help you? Is there any way I can serve you?’

And the third thing that I shared was we are a holiness Movement.

We think there is some value in the world to being salt and being light. We value the indwelling Spirit that makes us clean and free and whole and joyful. And I think that when we are walking in the Spirit in such a way that it’s the love of God that’s bearing fruit in our lives we underestimate the impact and the value of that in the world.

You are our first New Zealander. You’re gonna be going around the world making history. What most excites you about the role of General?

I think it’s the privilege of being able to encourage and inspire and facilitate Salvation Army mission around the world. My own love for the Lord has to be used to communicate to Salvationists around the world. So I think I am very conscious that I’m being afforded a wonderful and privileged opportunity to speak into the lives of Salvationists around the world about our mission and our purpose in the world. And that’s a huge privilege.

What can we be praying for you in these days?

When we were at the Welcome to the High Council and Farewell to General Brian Peddle and Commissioner Rosalie Peddle, we were invited to fill out prayer cards. I wrote on one: grace, peace, wisdom and courage. If I was asking the Salvation Army world to be in prayer for myself and for Bronwyn, those would be the things. I think it’s probably not inappropriate for me to say that if you could spare a prayer for our family, that would be wonderful.

l General-elect Commissioner Lyndon Buckingham will assume office on 3 August, following the retirement of General Brian Peddle.

COMMISSIONING AND REFLECTORS OF A MISSION FOR REFLECTORS OF HOLINESS

Commissioning 2023 was an extra special moment, whereas the Caribbean Territory welcomed two Captains and eight Lieutenants to its ranks. The atmosphere at the Stephanie Hall Auditorium, Holy Childhood High School in Half Way Tree was electrifying on Sunday June 25, 2023.

Comrades Salvationists from Eastern and Western Jamaica Divisions assembled in a jubilant atmosphere to give thanks and praise to God for his presence, protection and provision through the deadly covid-19 pandemic and to sing of his love once again, of the love that can never decay, of the blood of the lamb who was slain, till we praise him again in the day (Francis Bottome).

The Territorial Commander, Commissioner Devon and The Territorial President of Women’s Ministries Commissioner, Verona Haughton, conducted the Commissioning and Ordination Ceremony. It was such a beauty to witness; each member of The Reflectors of Holiness Session stepped up elegantly and solemnly to receive their Commissioning certificate from the Territorial Leaders.

The Special Guests for the great event were Commissioners Onal and Edmane Castor (Retired), who shared the word of God with clarity under God’s anointing.

The Sunday evening celebration saw the New Captains and Lieutenants receiving their new appointment. Three Divisions will welcome these new Officers.

AROUND THE TERRITORY

EARTHQUAKE, FLOOD, DISASTER

Severe weather conditions struck Haiti on June 2, 2023, bringing heavy rains and fierce winds that impacted the Western, South-Eastern, and North-Western regions. On Tuesday, June 6, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck the town of Jeremie, resulting in a tragic toll of at least five fatalities, 12 individuals reported missing, and 46 others sustaining injuries due to the collapse of residential structures primarily in Jeremie. The disruption caused by the earthquake has also led to the closure of National Road #7 between Jeremie and Les Cayes, rendering overland travel extremely difficult.

In response to these devastating events, The Salvation Army in Haiti is dedicated to providing assistance to 1000 families across affected areas. The aid efforts will encompass the provision of essential supplies such as Food, Hygiene items, and Tarpaulins. The distribution approach will involve collaborating with local authorities, including a donation to the town hall of Leogane, and conducting direct distributions to those impacted in Petit-Goave, Vialet, Port-de-paix, and Carrefour.

For those willing to extend a helping hand to the victims, there is an opportunity to make monetary contributions to The Salvation Army Territorial Headquarters via Reliance Bank. Kindly refer to the Account Number [Account Number] for your donation.

Your support can make a significant difference in aiding the affected communities during these challenging times.

IT'S HARVEST TIME AGAIN

Friends, it is another year of Harvest; as we look back over the last twelve months, we all went through our own wilderness experiences, just like the children of Israel in the land of the Wilderness.

God’s promises to the Children of Israel that He will bless them abundantly.

Harvest time reminds us of the fulfilment of that promise as recorded in Genesis 8:22 'While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, cold, heat, summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease'.

Friends, we have sowed seeds by God’s grace; we will be able to gather together the first fruits of our labours and bring them to God. If for some reasons, we have not sown nothing, then we would have reaped nothing. But, for all who had faithfully sown seeds, God promised; that they would reap the rewards of their faithfulness.

Let this season of Harvest reminds us that our lives are filled with seeds.

Seeds of love and kindness, of loving your neighbours as yourself, of making a difference in the lives of those we come into contact with.

Sadly, I want to suggest that some of us limit God’s blessing by not sowing from the resources He has given us, but those who are faithful can expect to receive a bountiful harvest.

My dear readers, let this harvest season be a reminder; that we cannot reap a harvest unless we sow seeds and nurture them.

Then we must wait and be patient. There may be times it seems like nothing is growing, and we might not reap a harvest. But, all the while, God’s principles remain true.

He promises if we are faithful, we WILL experience a harvest.

Have you been sowing seeds with your time, talent,

and treasure? If you have been faithful, God will reward you, and you will receive a harvest for your faithfulness and obedience. Trust in Him today, and rejoice. It’s harvest time! Let the words of Song 58 in the Salvation Army Song be a source of encouragement.

1 Sowing in the morning, sowing seeds of kindness, Sowing in the noontide and the dewy eves; aiting for the harvest and the time of reaping, We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.

Refrain: Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves, We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.

2 Sowing in the sunshine, sowing in the shadows, Fearing neither clouds nor winter’s chilling breeze, By and by the harvest and the labour ended, We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.

3 Go then, though with weeping, sowing for the Master, Though the lass sustained our spirit often grieves; When our labour’s over, he will bid us welcome; We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.

EASTERN JAMAICA DIVISION HONOURS LEAGUE OF MERCY MEMBERS

After the hiatus caused by COVID-19, the Eastern Jamaica Division once again hosted its annual League of Mercy LOM Seminar face-to-face at their Orange Street Headquarters on June 1, 2023. Everyone was delighted to be able to enjoy fellowship the old fashion way.

The plainspoken presenter, Deputy Superintendent Jacqueline Dillon, Domestic Violence Co-Ordinator at the Jamaica Constabulary Force, had everyone sitting at the edge of their seats as she shared on the ‘hot topic’ “Domestic Violence.” Her presentation had everyone at attention as she educated the group on the persisting issues.

The Divisional Commander, Eastern Jamaica Division, Major Nana Boakye-Agyemang, warmly greeted the LOM staff, members and guests. The LOM members were enthused, encouraged, and empowered to ‘keep doing good in the neighbourhood’.

It is always a joyous moment to welcome new members to the LOM group. And so, the Territorial League of Mercy Secretary, Major Vester Oates, was delighted to conduct the enrolment service by adding one new member from the Kingston Central Corps. Several LOM members received Long Service Awards at the Seminar & Appreciation Dinner. We say congratulation on their achievements!

IN FIRST FACE-TO-FACE SINCE COVID-19

Harvest of Souls Celebration

For much of 2020 and part of 2021, congregational and evangelistic outreach ministries were significantly curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic that gripped the world. However, amid the pandemic, it was evident that ministry was still ensuing, the Gospel continued, and souls won for the Kingdom of God.

To highlight this the 'Harvest of Souls' concept was planned and promoted in our 2023 Holiness Convention celebrations. During the afternoon session of the Holiness Convention, many of the Junior and Senior Soldiers who enrolled between 2020 and 2022; were highlighted; and celebrated as they marched from the back of the hall to the front with small Salvation Army flags draped across their chests. Junior and Senior Soldiers outside of Trinidad; were highlighted on the screen in a PowerPoint presentation.

We praise God for His continued faithfulness and for all the Officers who continue to engage in the great and noble act of 'saving souls, growing saints and serving suffering humanity'.

We look forward to the 'Harvest of Souls' that we will celebrate at Holiness Convention 2024, which God has blessed us with leading up to that time.

The Blessings of Harvest

Golden fields, a bountiful sight, Harvest's embrace, the sun's last light.

Nature's canvas, painted with care, fruits of labor, richness to share.

Rustling leaves and crops held high, A season's work beneath the sky.

Hands that toil, hearts full of grace, Harvest's blessings, life's steady pace.

From earth's embrace, sustenance springs, A tapestry woven with autumn's wings.

Gratitude blooms in every heart, as nature and humans play their part. Harvest's song, a symphony sweet, A cycle of life, in rhythm complete.
