THE VANISHING HORIZON

JIMEOIN – LOVELY!

Presented by Idle Motion Theatre Company

Presented by LiveNation

Using maps, paper airplanes and over forty suitcases, The Vanishing Horizon evokes the roaring twenties and the pioneers of aviation as they began to carve their way through silent skies at a time when flight was exciting and Croydon Airport was the gateway to the globe. From this emerges the modern story of a woman who is on a journey to discover her past through the crowded airports of our world to another, resting above the clouds.

Idle Motion’s filmic style is highly visual, creating bold theatrical images on stage. Nominated for a Total Theatre Award, this hugely successful British Council showcase and Fringe sell-out show is a must see.

THE RIVALS By R B Sheridan Presented by Chesil Theatre Company Directed by Vara Williams The classic comedy, The Rivals written by Richard Brinsley Sheridan over 200 years ago, is as fresh and funny now as it was then. A set of richly comic characters pout, giggle, flirt and duel in the search for true love set against the fashionable backdrop of Regency Bath. Lydia Languish is a headstrong girl who has read too many romances; Faulkland, a man who cannot believe he can be loved; and Mrs Malaprop – whose comic

verbal inaccuracies has led to the word ‘malapropism’ – is on the lookout for a clandestine love affair. In contrast we have the dashing soldier, Jack Absolute and the faithful Julia. Add an irascible father, a country bumpkin, a clever maid and a disreputable soldier of fortune and you have a delightful mix of characters.

Mary Shelley BY HELEN EDMUNDSON

WORLD PREMIERE TOUR

Daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft. Lover of Shelley. Author of Frankenstein… Award-winning Shared Experience brings to life the astonishing tale of Mary Shelley – and how she came to write one of the greatest stories ever told, aged just 19. This new play explores Shelley’s remarkable life: her controversial philosopher father, her scandalous elopement aged 16 and how she wrote a novel, so radical in its ideology, that in 1817 she changed the literary landscape forever. Shared Experience is renowned for bringing classics to the stage in bold, imaginative ways. For Mary Shelley they reunite with award-winning writer Helen Edmundson whose ground-breaking adaptations (Mill on the Floss, Coram Boy, Swallows and Amazons) have inspired generations of theatre makers. A co-production between Nottingham Playhouse, West Yorkshire Playhouse and Shared Experience in association with Oxford Playhouse, Mary Shelley is directed by Polly Teale, Artistic Director of Shared Experience. Celebrated for her potent visual and imaginative style, Polly won the Evening Standard Award for Best Director for her own play After Mrs Rochester, which also won the Time Out Award for Best West End Production. THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST

Charity fundraiser in aid of Age UK presented by The Miracle Theatre Company

“Then came the night of the first falling star. It was seen early in the morning, rushing over Winchester eastward, a line of flame high in the atmosphere…”

Based on the original novel and featuring songs from Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version, this production of The War of The Worlds is the closest you’ll ever get to an X-Files musical!

In 1898 HG Wells published his landmark novel, The War Of The Worlds, one of the earliest books to detail a conflict between mankind and an alien race. The book has been seen as many things; a commentary on evolutionary theory, a critique of British Imperialism and, at the time, a ‘scientific romance’… but never

Oscar Wilde’s ‘trivial comedy for serious people’ is a masterpiece of sharp wit and preposterous plotting. Such ‘beautiful nonsense’ cries out for the sort of surreal treatment that has become Miracle’s hallmark. Set in the year 1912, with the Titanic sinking and the Turkey Trot causing outrage across the dance floors of polite society, this tale of the strange contents of a handbag found at Victoria Station has been subtly adapted to

extract every drop of humour and contemporary relevance. In this high energy production by Bill Scott, Miracle adds an extra dimension to the ‘funniest play ever written’. The Miracle Theatre has been touring innovative comic theatre across the UK for 30 years and has earned a reputation for exciting adaptations of classic works. THAT CERTAIN UNCERTAINTY!

WINNALL ROCK SCHOOL

Presented by King Edward VI School, Southampton

The Winnall Rock School returns for its 8th summer show at the Theatre Royal

The year is 1927 and Archie Spent is in trouble. He has turned his late father’s house into a hotel and has accepted a booking from three physicists preparing a lecture on quantum physics. To avoid distraction the physicists have stipulated that no female guests are present. Unfortunately, Archie has doublebooked the scientists with a certain Lady Rosamund Philibert and her two nieces. What is Archie to do? Archie, his sister Violet and their

mute brother Cuthbert try to keep the two groups apart. It gradually becomes apparent that all is not as it seems as the strange rules of quantum physics begin to control events in the hotel. See how the situation unravels in a musical comedy that will leave you singing, laughing and even understanding a little more about quantum physics!

HAIRY MACLARY AND FRIENDS

DEATH AND GARDENING

‘Out of the gate and off for a walk, went Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy.’

Following a hugely successful international tour, Wet Picnic is back with its new show Death and Gardening. Set in the cut-throat world of allotments where planting and gardening competitions are not just about who has the biggest marrow, Death and Gardening focusses on loss and humanity, exploring the hidden worlds, fragilities and fantasies of the people behind the patches. This show mixes Wet Picnic's awardwinning trademark movement theatre and playful comedy with dark humour, early 90s dance routines and mischievous theatricality. Wet Picnic is an international touring theatre company which develops new and original theatre.

Anyone with young children will recognise these immortal words instantly as the HairyMaclary A5 poster.indd 3 opening lines of the book Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy by Lynley Dodd. Following a sell-out run at the Fringe 2010 and a UK Tour in 2011, Hairy Maclary and his friends are springing off the page once again this summer. It features many of the characters from the books like Hercules Morse, as big as a Horse – Bottomley Potts, covered in spots – Schnitzel von Krumm, with the

very low tum and Scarface Claw – the toughest tomcat in town. With music, singing and several of your favourite Hairy Maclary stories, this show is a must for the whole family. 01/03/2012 16:48
