This award-winning and exquisitely funny new take on the much-loved classic was a huge critical and popular hit during its London run and follows hot on the heels of last year’s outstanding all-male production of HMS Pinafore. The tale of a child apprenticed to a band of tender hearted, orphaned pirates was an immediate triumph for Gilbert and Sullivan and remains their most popular and successful work.

Hat Fair takes its name from the tradition of putting money into buskers’ hats at the end of their show, a tradition we uphold to this day. Everything is free, but of course it’s far from free to produce, so if you can, do come along prepared to give generously to the hatters and support the running costs of the festival.

Join us as the streets of Winchester come to life for three fantastic days of performance, from the weird to the truly wonderful. With theatre, dance and circus-inspired events to surprise you on every corner, Hat Fair celebrates the unexpected, rewards the curious, and delights all those who come out to play! There will be premieres of new shows from homegrown talent like Wet Picnic, dazzling dance from festival favourites Stopgap, a speciallydesigned Children’s Area in Cathedral Inner Close, hatting pitches galore, and family fun at Sunday’s Oram’s Arbour Picnic.

The Knowledge Emporium presented by Slung Low We all know at least one thing that no-one else knows. This summer is your chance to share it as Slung Low invites you into The Knowledge Emporium to celebrate the knowledge that makes you unique. The Knowledge Emporium is an old-fashioned sweetshop in a converted 1960’s airstream caravan, which will be taking up residence outside The Discovery Centre in Winchester. However, this is a sweetshop with one big difference: it doesn’t take money. It trades only in knowledge - your stories, your recipes, anecdotes or facts in exchange for sweets. At the end of the week as part of Hat Fair, The Emporium will move to the Law Courts where Slung Low will create performed events from the material collected, celebrating the collective knowledge of the community. Much Ado About Nothing “Friendship is constant in all other things, save in the office and affairs of love” Claudio and Hero are in love and marriage is on the cards. However, there are those who are plotting to stop it. Beatrice and Benedick, meanwhile, can’t stand all that love stuff anyway. Be prepared for lies, trickery, deception, misunderstanding, matchmaking, parental meddling and general chaos. All richly blended together with love, wit and humour. Much Ado’s mix of romance, borderline slapstick, verbal comedy, soaps and melodrama makes it a timeless piece of theatre that’s especially relevant to audiences new to Shakespeare. Following their successful tour of Hamlet, which was featured in the award-winning documentary Growing Up Downs, Blue Apple returns with a new adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Blue Apple Theatre is a highly ambitious company which brings all the benefits of taking part in theatre to performers who have learning disabilities and enables them to present high quality productions to the widest possible audience in a variety of large and small scale productions, touring theatre and film. “A triumph for the cast and all involved in this life enhancing project” The Times “An extraordinary triumph” The Stage

My wonderful world of colour - Rhian John

Mother Earth by Anna Dora Anna Dora’s inspiration comes from her homeland, Iceland, a country of extreme contrasts. The softness of the blue lagoon is cut by hard lava rock infusion, the powerful volcanic eruption crashes against the beautiful serene glacier. This is where the magic of contrasts comes together, sparking unique, imposing, original art in a playful, organic, abstract way. Mythical creatures can be seen in the shapes of the Icelandic mountains, crisp spring water and the breath-taking ice caves in the glaciers. Anna loves creating this in her paintings: each and every piece has its own adventure in the eyes of the viewer. With varied media, it creates almost a multi-dimensional effect. Each painting evolves constantly from dusk till dawn.

I am delighted to be holding my first solo exhibition at Theatre Royal Winchester. I will be showing my energetic and vibrant paintings packed with colour, which people tell me make them smile!

She also uses her artwork to create an enticing, playful atmosphere in creative home designs such as kitchen splash backs and Perspex box paintings, perfect for dining rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms.

I love bright colours and the amazing tones we find around us everyday. I paint landscapes, florals and a few animals too, taking inspiration from my roots in Wales as well as the glorious Hampshire countryside and south coast.

Anna lives and works in Winchester.

Monday 18 May to Tuesday 30 June

I now live in Winchester with my husband, three teenagers and two rabbits, but I’m a Cardiff girl at heart! If you like colour as much as me, this exhibition is for you.
