So, this season we celebrate 450 years of Shakespeare with one of the most brilliant productions of Twelfth Night of recent times, with Filter combining words and music to make a show that is genuinely eye and ear opening.

Fifty years ago Entertaining Mr Sloane delighted and horrified 1960s audiences with a genuinely shocking tale of lust and greed and we are delighted that it is still going strong and there is a rare chance to see it here this Spring.

OPERA

As our centenary year opens, we are delighted to nod to lots of the anniversaries that 2014 brings.

Birdsong is a mammoth novel of the First World War and Original Theatre Company’s production matches it for emotional and historic scope as we start a number of events that will commemorate the sacrifice and courage of 1914 to 1918.

Throughout the year we will be selling tickets for our magnificent centenary raffle culminating in a prize draw on 24 August 2014. *Tickets cost £2.00 each or £10.00 for a book of 10 and are available from the box office. For full details go to www.theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk

*Tickets cost £65.00 and can be purchased from the box office on 01962 840 440 (not available online). Tables seat 10 people.

At the reopening of the theatre in 2001 many of our most loyal supporters made a significant donation to the theatre and in recognition of their generosity an auditorium seat was named in their honour for a 10 year period. In 2014 we will be asking our audiences to consider making a similar pledge. All money raised will be invested in the theatre to help extend seating capacity, making it less reliant on public funding.

Face forward | PORTRAITS ’14 FACE FORWARD | PORTRAITS ‘14 is a celebration of the art of portraiture across four cultural venues at the northern end of Jewry Street, The Gallery and City Space in Winchester Discovery Centre, the Artcafe and Theatre Royal Winchester. This joint project presents different facets of portraiture, living as we do in a society constantly fascinated by images of others, both objective and manipulated. Rob Truscott Rob is an artist, sculptor and a graduate from Winchester School of Art. His sensitive portraiture and figurative work links to his belief that the human figure remains the ultimate means of artistic expression, communicating in a direct unequivocal manner humanity’s eternal struggle. His work conveys a vulnerability and stillness in the sitter, suggestive of relinquishing disquiet for as long as it takes for the portrait to be completed. Mike Weller

Art in Winchester

This year, and last Christmas, Mike had two pictures selected for exhibition by the New English Art Club and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters at the Mall Galleries. He is the New English Art Club drawing scholar for 2014.

Paintings by Miles Boden Miles was born and brought up in Winchester. He studied Art with Art History, a Foundation Diploma from Winchester School of Art and also holds a qualification in Fine Arts Valuation. His works in oils take inspiration from the iconic scenes of Winchester, as well as the natural landscapes and hidden corners of the city. Amongst his subjects are King Alfred’s Statue, the weirs, Peninsula Barracks and quiet corners around the Cathedral. www.artinwinchester.com

Miles explains, “With Winchester’s relatively small size and large areas of green space, I love the presence of water with the clear flowing rivers Itchen and Test. In my work I want to convey the essence of a moment – of space and water, of leaves and of the light.”

Monday 20 January to Friday 28 February

Mike draws and paints in a traditional style, from life. His portraits are in the best tradition of portrait painting in oils but with an impressionistic quality which captures not just the physical likeness but the essential character of his subject. Katharine Davies Katharine lives in Dorset and has spent much of her professional life commissioning or taking photographs, most recently for the National Trust. She specialises in contemporary portraits and is inspired by the words of Paul Caponigro in shaping her work: ‘It’s one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it’s another to make a portrait of who they are.’
