While the idea of eating something that just came out of your body might squick you out, the fact is, consuming your placenta (also called placentophagy) has become more and more popular over the years. While some believe that eating placenta (either raw or in pill format) has certain health benefits like improved mood and milk production, evidence remains anecdotal. And while benefits may be hard to prove, there's potentially some reason to be wary.

In June of 201 7, the CDC published a report that a baby had contracted Group B Streptococcus twice through breastmilk, after the mother had consumed contaminated placenta pills. Benefits or claims aside, here are six women's experiences consuming their placenta.

I couldn't find any scientific studies outlining any benefits to consuming human placenta, and I had difficulty finding any historical cases, traditional medicine cases from other cultures, or even animal studies.

"I had my placenta encapsulated by a professional doula, who put the placenta in a cooler upon delivery, took it home with her, and brought it back to me in a jar full of pills the next day. Thankfully, we never had to actually see the piece of meat my mom described as a London broil, but the whole thing is a strange practice. After you finish the pills, she gave me

another bottle with a tiny piece of the placenta (an inch or two long) that was soaking in vodka. After three months, you are supposed to take the liquid from this bottle and put it in a larger tincture bottle of vodka for use for whenever you need it for the rest of your life. This process is pretty disgusting as you actually have to maneuver the old flesh.I did it the first time, but the second piece of it is still sitting in my cabinet. Having someone who is a trained specialist is an important part of the process. The capsules are easy to swallow and are regular size 00 pills. You do taste the pills, but to me it was no difference then taking my prenatal vitamin supplement. It is blood, so to me it tasted like after you bite your lip, a slight iron taste.

Charlemagne Charlemagne (/ˈ ʃɑːrləmeɪn/) or Charles the Great[a] (2 April 742[1 ][b] – 28 January 81 4), numbered Charles I, was King of the Franksfrom 768, King of the Lombards from 774 and Holy Roman Emperor from 800. He united much of western and central Europe during the early Middle Ages. He was the first recognised emperor to rule from western Europe since the fall of the Western Roman Empire three centuries earlier.[2] The expanded Frankish state that Charlemagne founded is called the Carolingian Empire. Charlemagne was the eldest son of Pepin the Short and Bertrada of Laon, having been born before their canonical marriage.[3] He became king in 768 following his father's death, initially as co-ruler with his brother Carloman I. Carloman's sudden death in December 771 under unexplained circumstances left Charlemagne as the sole, undisputed ruler of the Frankish Kingdom.[4] He continued his father's policy towards the papacy and became its protector, removing the Lombards from power in northern Italy and leading an incursion into Muslim Spain. He campaigned against the Saxons to his east, Christianising them upon penalty of death and leading to events such as the Massacre of Verden.

Charlemagne has been called the "Father of Europe" (Pater Europae),[c] as he united most of Western Europe for the first time since the classical era of the Roman Empire and united parts of Europe that had never been under Frankish rule. His rule spurred the Carolingian Renaissance, a period of energetic cultural and intellectual activity within the Western Church. All Holy Roman Emperors considered their kingdoms to be descendants of Charlemagne's empire, up to the last Emperor Francis II and the French and German monarchies.[ citation needed]However, the Eastern Orthodox Church views Charlemagne more controversially, labeling as heterodox his support of the filioque and recognition by the Bishop of Rome as legitimate Roman Emperor, rather than recognising Irene of Athens of the Eastern Roman Empire. These and other machinations led to the eventual split of Rome and Constantinople in the Great Schism of 1 054.[5][d] Charlemagne died in 81 4, having ruled as emperor for thirteen years.

Cyrus II of Persia ([4] New Persian: ‫ شوروک‬Kuruš; Hebrew: ‫‬ׁ שֶ רֹּכ‬, Modern Kōréš, Tiberian Kōréš; c. 600 – 530 BC),[5] commonly known as Cyrus the Great [6] and also called Cyrus the Elder by the Greeks, was the founder of the Achaemenid Empire, the first Persian Empire.[7] Under his rule, the empire embraced all the previous civilized states of the ancient Near East,[7] expanded vastly and eventually conquered most of Southwest Asia and much of Central Asia and the Caucasus. From the Mediterranean Sea and Hellespont in the west to the Indus River in the east, Cyrus the Great created the largest empire the world had yet seen.[8] Under his successors, the empire eventually stretched at its maximum extent from parts of the Balkans (Bulgaria-Paeonia and Thrace-Macedonia) and Eastern Europe proper in the west, to the Indus Valley in the east. His regal titles in full were The Great King, King of Persia, King of Anshan, King of Media, King of Babylon, King of Sumer and Akkad, and King of the Four Corners of the World. The Nabonidus Chronicle notes the change in his title from simply "King of Anshan", a city, to "King of Persia". Assyriologist François Vallat wrote that "When Astyages marched against Cyrus, Cyrus is called ‘King of Anshan’, but when Cyrus crosses the Tigris on his way to Lydia, he is ‘King of Persia’. The coup therefore took place between these two events."[9] The reign of Cyrus the Great lasted c. 30 years. Cyrus built his empire by first conquering the Median Empire, then the Lydian Empire, and eventually the Neo-Babylonian Empire. Either before or after Babylon, he led an expedition into Central Asia, which resulted in major campaigns that were described as having brought "into subjection every nation without exception".[1 0] Cyrus did not venture into Egypt, and was alleged to have died in battle, fighting the Massagetae along the Syr Darya in December 530 BC.[11 ][1 2] He was succeeded by his son, Cambyses II, who managed to add to the empire by conquering Egypt, Nubia, and Cyrenaica during his short rule.

Cyrus the Great respected the customs and religions of the lands he conquered.[1 3] This became a very successful model for centralized administration and establishing a government working to the advantage and profit of its subjects.[7] In fact, the administration of the empire through satraps and the vital principle of forming a government at Pasargadae were the works of Cyrus.[1 4] What is sometimes referred to as the Edict of Restoration (actually two edicts) described in the Bible as being made by Cyrus the Great left a lasting legacy on the Jewish religion, where, because of his policies in Babylonia, he is referred to by the Jewish Bible as messiah (lit. "His anointed one") (Isaiah 45:1 ),[1 5] and is the only non-Jewish figure in the Bible to be called so.[1 6] Cyrus the Great is also well recognized for his achievements in human rights, politics, and military strategy, as well as his influence on both Eastern and Western civilizations. With an illustrious history dating back to 1 946, Fender has touched and transformed music worldwide and in nearly every genre: rock ‘n’ roll, country and western, jazz, rhythm and blues, and many others. In the 1 940s, southern California inventor Leo Fender realized that he could improve on the amplified hollow-body instruments of the day by using an innovative and rather simple solid-body electric guitar design. Further, he realized that he could streamline the process of building them.

In 1 951 he introduced a prototype solid-body instrument that would eventually be called the Telecaster® guitar. The Tele®, as it was often called then and still is today, was the first solidbody Spanish-style electric guitar to be commercially mass-produced.

That same year, Fender introduced a revolutionary new invention—the Precision Bass guitar. It was played like a guitar and had frets so that it could be played with “precision,” and it could be amplified, thus liberating bassists from unwieldy and increasingly difficult-to-hear acoustic basses.

These two historic instruments laid the foundation for a new kind of group and a revolution in popular music—what we know today as the modern rock combo. As opposed to the “big bands” of the era, electric Fender instruments made it possible for smaller groups of musicians to get together and be heard.

The Stratocaster first appeared in 1 954, incorporating many design innovations based on feedback from professional musicians, Fender

staff and Leo Fender himself. Its third single-coil pickup offered more tonal possibilities, its sleekly contoured body made it more comfortable, and its double cutaway design made access to upper registers much easier.

Most important, however, was the addition of the new Fender vibrato (or “tremolo”) bridge, an innovation originally intended to let guitarists bend strings, thus achieving the pedal steel-like sound so popular among country music artists of the day.

Nobody could have foreseen then how the Stratocaster would go on to revolutionize popular music. Essentially unchanged since its 1 954 debut, it is the most popular and influential electric guitar ever, and players at all levels and in all genres continue to rely on its sound, playability and versatility to this day.

Leo Fender himself remained an immensely creative force over the next decade, introducing many classic instrument and amplifier designs, including the Jazz Bass® guitar, the Jaguar® and Jazzmaster® guitars and the Twin Reverb® amplifier.

Because of poor health, Leo Fender sold the company to CBS in 1 965. Fender Musical Instruments experienced tremendous growth over the next 20 years, but a lack of commitment and real understanding of music and musicians

by CBS gradually became apparent.

To “re-invent” Fender, CBS recruited new management in 1 981 . William Schultz became company president, supported by associate William Mendello. Their 5-year business plan was based on increasing Fender’s marketplace presence with dramatic quality improvement and greater commitment to research and development.

When CBS shed its non-broadcast media businesses in the 1 980s, a group of employees and investors led by Schultz bought Fender from CBS in 1 985. The sale put the Fender name back into the hands of a small group of dedicated people committed to creating the world’s best guitars and amplifiers.

The new Fender Musical Instruments Corporation (FMIC) had to start from scratch—there were no buildings or machinery included in the sale. Among other things, FMIC purchased the name, intellectual property and some leftover parts. Supported by a core group of loyal employees, dealers and suppliers (some of whom had been with the company since Leo Fender founded it), Schultz and his colleagues set out to rebuild an American icon.

The new Fender initially imported its guitars from offshore manufacturers with proven ability to produce affordable and viable instruments, but the move toward greater quality control soon led to the establishment in 1 985 of Fender’s flagship U.S. factory in Corona, Calif. A second modern manufacturing facility opened in 1 987 in Ensenada, Mexico.

Also in 1 987, the renowned Fender Custom Shop opened at the Corona facility, creating dream instruments for professional guitarists and guitar enthusiasts. Fender had always recognized the importance of an open-door policy for professional musicians, accommodating their requests for specific features on an individual basis. The common raven (Corvus corax) also known as the northern raven, is a large all-black passerine bird. Found across the Northern Hemisphere, it is the most widely distributed of all corvids. There are at least eight subspecies with little variation in appearance, although recent research has demonstrated significant genetic differences among populations from various regions. It is one of the two largest corvids, alongside the thick-billed raven, and is possibly the heaviest passerine bird; at maturity, the common raven averages 63 centimetres (25 inches) in length and 1 .2 kilograms (2.6 pounds) in mass. Common ravens can live up to 21 years in the wild,[2] a lifespan surpassed among passerines by only a few Australasian species such as the satin bowerbird[3] and probably the lyrebirds. Young birds may travel in flocks but later mate for life, with each mated pair defending a territory.

Common ravens have coexisted with humans for thousands of years and in some areas have been so numerous that people have regarded them as pests. Part of their success as a species is due to their omnivorous diet; they are extremely versatile and opportunistic in finding sources of nutrition, feeding on carrion, insects, cereal grains, berries, fruit, small animals, and food waste.

Some notable feats of problem-solving provide evidence that the common raven is unusually intelligent.[4] Over the centuries, it has been the subject of mythology, folklore, art, and literature. In many cultures, including the indigenous cultures of Scandinavia, ancient Ireland and Wales, Bhutan, the northwest coast of North America, and Siberia and northeast Asia, the common raven has been revered as a spiritual figure or god.[5

In sunlight, the plumage can display a blue or purple sheen which is a result of iridescence.

A mature common raven ranges between 54 and 67 cm (21 " and 26") long, with a wingspan of 11 5 to 1 50 cm (45–51 ").[28][29][30][31 ] Recorded weights range from 0.69 to 2 kg (1 .5 to 4.4 lb),[32][33] thus making the common raven one of the heaviest passerines. Birds from colder regions such as the

Himalayas and Greenland are generally larger with slightly larger bills, while those from warmer regions are smaller with proportionally smaller bills.[34] Representative of the size variation in the species, ravens from California weighed an average of 784 g (1 .728 lb), those from Alaska weighed an average of 1 ,1 35 g (2.502 lb) and those from Nova Scotia weighed an average of 1 ,230 g (2.71 lb).[35][36][37] The bill is large and slightly curved, with a culmen length of 5.7 to 8.5 cm (2.2 to 3.3 in), easily one of the largest bills amongst passerines (perhaps only the thick-billed raven has a noticeably larger bill). It has a longish, strongly graduated tail, at 20 to 26.3 cm (7.9 to 1 0.4 in), and mostly black iridescent plumage, and a dark brown iris. The throat feathers are elongated and pointed and the bases of the neck feathers are pale brownish-grey. The legs and feet are good-sized, with a tarsus length of 6 to 7.2 cm (2.4 to 2.8 in).[38][39] Juvenile plumage is similar but duller with a blue-grey iris.[40] Apart from its greater size, the common raven differs from its cousins, the crows, by having a larger and heavier black beak, shaggy feathers around the throat and above the beak, and a wedgeshaped tail.[41 ] Flying ravens are distinguished from crows by their tail shape, larger wing area, and more stable soaring style, which generally involves less wing flapping. Despite their bulk, ravens are easily as agile in flight as their smaller cousins. In flight the feathers produce a creaking sound that has been likened to the rustle of silk.[1 9] The voice of ravens is also quite distinct, its usual call being a deep croak of a much more sonorous quality than a crow's call. In North America, the Chihuahuan raven (C. cryptoleucus) is fairly similar to the relatively small common ravens of the American southwest and is best distinguished by the still relatively smaller size of its bill, beard and body and relatively longer tail. All-black carrion crow (C. corone) in Europe may suggest a raven due to their largish bill but are still distinctly smaller and have the wing and tail shapes typical of crows.[42] In the Faroe Islands a now extinct colour-morph of this species existed, known as the pied raven.[43] White ravens are occasionally found in the wild. Birds in British Columbia lack the pink eyes of an albino, and are instead leucistic, a condition where an animal lacks any of several different types of pigment, not simply melanin.[44]

Common ravens have a wide range of vocalizations which are of interest to ornithologists. Gwinner carried out important studies in the early 1 960s, recording and photographing his findings in great detail.[45] Fifteen to 30 categories of vocalization have been recorded for this species, most of which are used for social interaction. Calls recorded include alarm calls, chase calls, and flight calls. The species has a distinctive, deep, resonant prrukprruk-prruk call, which to experienced listeners is unlike that of any other corvid. Its very wide and complex vocabulary includes a high, knocking toc-toc-toc, a dry, grating kraa, a low guttural rattle and some calls of an almost musical nature. Like other corvids, ravens can mimic sounds from their environment, including human speech.

Non-vocal sounds produced by the common raven include wing whistles and bill snapping.

Clapping or clicking has been observed more often in females than in males. If a member of a pair is lost, its mate reproduces the calls of its lost partner to encourage its return.[46]

Two juveniles in Iceland Common ravens can thrive in varied climates; indeed this species has the largest range of any member of the genus,[47][48] and one of the largest of any passerine.[49] They range throughout the Holarctic from Arctic and temperate habitats in North America and Eurasia to the deserts of North Africa, and to islands in the Pacific Ocean. In the British Isles, they are more common in Scotland, Wales, northern England and the west of Ireland.[41 ] In Tibet, they have been recorded at altitudes up to 5,000 m (1 6,400 ft), and as high as 6,350 m (20,600 ft) on Mount Everest.[48][50] The population sometimes known as the Punjab raven—described as Corvus corax laurencei (also spelt lawrencii or laurencii) by Allan Octavian Hume but more often considered synonymous with subcorax[1 7]—is restricted to the Sindh district of Pakistan and adjoining regions of northwestern India.[1 9][20] They are generally resident within their range for the whole year. In his 1 950 work, Grønlands Fugle [Birds of Greenland], noted ornithologist Finn Salomonsen

indicated that common ravens did not overwinter in the Arctic.[51 ] However, in Arctic Canada and Alaska, they are found year-round.[52][53][54] Young birds may disperse locally.[55] Most common ravens prefer wooded areas with large expanses of open land nearby, or coastal regions for their nesting sites and feeding grounds. In some areas of dense human population, such as California in the United States, they take advantage of a plentiful food supply and have seen a surge in their numbers.[56] On coasts, individuals of this species are often evenly distributed and prefer to build their nest sites along sea cliffs.[57] Common ravens are often located in coastal regions because these areas provide easy access to water and a variety of food sources.[57] Also, coastal regions have stable weather patterns without extreme cold or hot temperatures.
