NIGEL HENRY Chairman, Langdon Dear Friends I really appreciate you giving up the time to join us this evening – I know you get asked to go to lots of events. They do work though: as a guest, I was hooked by this wonderful cause at a dinner ten years ago. So, I’m hoping we’ll have a similar impact on you tonight!

This year’s evening is different; we’re letting our Members run the show so that you can meet, see and hear from as many of them as possible. You’ll see how fabulous they are, how much they strive to be ‘the best me’. This is what Langdon is all about: empowering them to enjoy life like all of us.

There is so much more to do though, particularly for those in the Jewish community with learning disabilities with whom we haven’t connected yet. The decline in statutory funding means we need to raise more money just to maintain our services before we can grow them. I hope you’ll give big tonight but I also hope you will join me on the exciting journey to improving many more young lives.

GARY SKOVRON Chief Executive, Langdon Dear Friends It’s also my pleasure to welcome you to tonight’s annual dinner where I know you will get a real sense of what our Members achieve. All of this is down to my fantastic professional team and our wonderful volunteers who all go beyond the brief.

Unfortunately, the care sector faces serious issues from a combination of reduced statutory funding, staff shortages and legal challenges on overnight supervision. Despite all of this, we continue to look for ways to improve our Members’ lives and in this respect, I am grateful for the support of our enthusiastic Board.

You can be assured that in our quest to deliver the best for our Members, we also seek to provide value for money to those who fund us: the local authorities providing our statutory income and generous supporters like you who help make up the sizeable balance of our required revenue.

Warwick Davis is an English actor, television presenter, writer, director and producer. He has starred in many notable blockbuster movies including Willow, Star Wars and Harry Potter.

He also starred as a fictionalised version of himself in the sitcom, Life’s Too Short written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. Other television credits include, Celebrity Squares, Weekend Escapes and his popular ITV daytime quiz, Tenable.

In 2013, he presented an episode of Perspectives: Warwick Davis – The Seven Dwarfs of Auschwitz, in which he explored the story of the Ovitz family, a touring musical troupe which included seven dwarfs who survived the concentration camp and the experiments of Josef Mengele.

Warwick was born with an extremely rare form of dwarfism called Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita.

When he was 11, his grandmother heard a radio advert calling for people who were 4 feet tall or shorter to be in Star Wars, Return of the Jedi.

Warwick is a true inspiration to those faced with personal challenges, proving that it is not only good to be different but you can build an entire career around it.

JONNY MANSON President, Langdon We’re extremely proud to announce that Jonny Manson has been appointed the first President of Langdon.

Jonny Manson is one of the four founding fathers of Langdon. Twenty-six years ago, he got together with Simon Olswang, Barry Ross and Barry Welck, to ensure that their children had somewhere to go after attending school. That place is Langdon College.

For over a quarter of century, this larger than life Mancunian has been a Trustee and helped Langdon grow from supporting four teenagers in 1992, into today’s professional charity working with in excess of 150 young Jewish people with learning disabilities.

Throughout this period, he has been a generous donor and organised a number of successful fundraising dinners in Manchester. In recent years, despite a busy schedule, he has found the time to join us on the annual bike ride.

He’s an extraordinary mensch and we hope he will give us another 25 years!

EMPOWERING INDEPENDENCE Our Vision Until recently, no one knew how many people in the Jewish community have learning disabilities. Thanks to research commissioned

by Langdon and carried out by JPR, we’ve been able to estimate it at 23,171.

At Langdon, many of our members have moderate learning disabilities. One of the challenges is that ‘moderate’ sounds quite benign. Indeed, it is often described as the ‘invisible disability’. The reality is very different.

The people that Langdon supports are extraordinary people. For a person with a learning disability, the ordinary everyday activities of looking after yourself, working and socialising presents extraordinary challenges because of the additional barriers they face.

The fact that through their hard work and determination they overcome these barriers to achieve these ordinary things makes them extraordinary people.

Langdon empowers Jewish adults with learning disabilities with the skills and opportunities to live independently in their communities, within a Jewish ethos. We operate in Manchester, North West London and Hertfordshire.

Our vision is to ensure that people with learning disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else, so they can live independently in their local community.

Our mission is to empower people with learning disabilities to live independently through the provision of education, employment, social activities and youth programmes, delivered within a warm and caring Jewish environment.

A JUMP-START INTO WORK Opening the doors to independence

People with learning disabilities can often find there are significant barriers to getting, and keeping, a job. Through our specialist employment programmes, we help our members to meet and overcome these barriers, developing their professional skills and enabling them to thrive in the workplace.

One in four people with a learning disability told the NHS that they rarely leave the house for more than one hour a day. Without a job, this can simply be because they have nowhere to go.

In the UK only 6% of people with learning disabilities are in any form of employment related activities. At Langdon 90% of our members are either in paid employment, volunteering or in work experience programmes, thanks to the unique support we offer.

We have two New Chapters facilities, one in Manchester and one in London, which has recently moved into a new, expanded facility in Harrow. Our goal is for New Chapters to be a selfsustaining social enterprise in the next five years, offering 20,000 hours per year of supported employment, training Langdon members and outreach members. The New Chapters model has been successful in leading to lasting jobs for many participants. The self-esteem, self-worth and pride that comes with having and doing well in a job sets a standard for all areas of life, encouraging better social interactions, instilling respect for self and others, and facilitating a positive mental state.

NEW CHAPTERS Langdon’s social enterprise scheme is called New Chapters. It offers work place training for our Langdon members and people in the wider community who have learning disabilities, who we refer to as outreach members. New Chapters sells second-hand books online through Amazon. The people that work at New Chapters complete tasks such as listing and sorting the books that are donated to us, packing and sending out orders and dealing with customers.

New Chapters introduces them to the world of work; from teaching the importance of waking up and getting to work on time, through to essential IT and communication skills. These are skills that most people take for granted when they enter the workplace, but for our members, every completed work day is an achievement.

We are always looking for jobs for our members, who we train through New Chapters, so they are qualified, reliable and work-ready. We assign an employment co-ordinator who explains to the employer what they can expect, talks frankly about any concerns and matches employee to employer.
