Voorwoord Beste alumni, betrokkenen en belangstellenden, De Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam is in 1913 ontstaan op initiatief van een groep voortvarende en vermaarde ondernemers. Zij zetten zich in om hoger onderwijs te realiseren in Rotterdam en hadden zich verenigd in de rechtsvoorganger van het Erasmus Trustfonds. Geïnspireerd door de ondernemersgeest van toen, reageerde meer dan een eeuw later een groep ondernemende alumni en betrokken Rotterdammers enthousiast op de oproep van het Erasmus Trustfonds om bij te dragen aan de drie centrale maatschappelijke thema’s van de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam: Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity, Smarter Choices for Better Health en Vital Cities and Citizens. Nu staan zij als onze founding- en launching donors samen met het Erasmus Trustfonds op de bres voor uitmuntend wetenschappelijk onderzoek en onderwijs in Rotterdam.

In 2019 breidde de groep die de campagne van het Erasmus Trustfonds ruimhartig ondersteunt zich verder uit. Zij zorgen er nu voor dat de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam kan rekenen op een onafhankelijke inkomstenstroom. Het belang hiervan is niet te onderschatten, want het stelt de universiteit in staat een stap verder te gaan dan mogelijk is met de reguliere inkomsten uit collegegeld en bijdragen van de overheid. Dankzij dit parti-

culiere initiatief worden ambitieuze onderzoeksprojecten haalbaar, worden Rotterdammers met de uitkomsten van onderzoek direct verder geholpen en biedt de universiteit onderwijs aan studenten voor wie dit niet vanzelfsprekend is.

Het enthousiasme waarmee alumni, Rotterdamse families en betrokkenen reageren op de oproep van het Erasmus Trustfonds is inspirerend en hartverwarmend. Hieruit blijkt niet alleen de grote betrokkenheid met de universiteit, haar ambities en de stad Rotterdam, maar ook dat de onNederlandse ambitie om het Erasmus Trustfonds met 100 miljoen euro te laten groeien, mogelijk is.

In 2019 keerde het Erasmus Trustfonds een recordbedrag uit aan activiteiten die zowel een positieve maatschappelijke impact hebben, als de universiteit laten meedingen in de internationale top van de academische wereld.

The Erasmus University Rotterdam was founded in 1913 by a group of ambitious and eminent entrepreneurs. They dedicated themselves to making higher education a reality in Rotterdam, and joined forces to form the predecessor of the Erasmus Trustfonds. More than a century later, they continue to inspire a group of involved Rotterdammers and alumni. They responded to the call of the Erasmus Trustfonds to contribute to the three major societal themes of the Erasmus University Rotterdam: Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity, Smarter Choices for Better Health, and Vital Cities and Citizens. They have become our founding and launching donors, and together with the Erasmus Trustfonds they are committed to facilitating outstanding scientific research and education in Rotterdam.

Alumni, families from Rotterdam, as well as other people involved with the university have responded with inspiring and heartwarming enthusiasm. This not only demonstrates the fund’s strong connection to the university, its ambitions, and the city of Rotterdam, but also that the ambitious goal of increasing the Erasmus Trustfonds with 100 million euro is indeed feasible.

positieve ontwikkelingen in de wereldmarkten, het afgelopen jaar zijn vruchten afgeworpen. De kosten voor het vermogensbeheer zijn afgenomen, terwijl het beleggingsresultaat in 2019 een recordhoogte bereikte van 17,5%. In dat jaar zijn ook systemen en procedures verder doorontwikkeld en is het doelbestedingenbeleid volledig herzien. Zo kunnen studenten en onderzoekers van de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam nu hun aanvraag indienen via het online aanvraagportal en zijn voorbereidingen getroffen om in 2020 buitenlandse toponderzoekers als Erasmus Trustfonds Fellow uit te nodigen aan de universiteit. De donateurs van het eerste uur zijn inmiddels doorgewinterde partners en enorm betrokken bij de projecten of onderzoekers die zij ondersteunen. Steeds vaker ontstaan in die partnerships nieuwe invalshoeken en projecten.

Rotterdam mogelijk hebben gemaakt. Het Erasmus Trustfonds zet de koers voort en blijft, samen met u, werken aan de belangrijke doelstelling om de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam te laten groeien en bloeien.

Over the past year we have achieved great results thanks to a revision of our investment policy, combined with positive developments in global markets. The costs of asset management have decreased while the 2019 returns on investment hit a record high of 17,5%. In the same year, we continued developing our systems and procedures and completely revised our disbursement policy. Erasmus University Rotterdam students and researchers can now submit their applications using our online portal, and we have made preparations to invite leading foreign researchers to the university as Erasmus Trustfonds Fellow in 2020. Early donors are now seasoned partners, closely involved with the research or projects that thrive on their support. These partnerships provide excellent conditions for new perspectives and projects.

Bericht van de rector magnificus De nieuwe strategie van de Erasmus Universiteit zet in op positieve maatschappelijke impact met ons onderwijs en onderzoek. We willen positief bijdragen aan het oplossen van grote vraagstukken op het vlak van duurzame en inclusieve welvaartsgroei, aan een betere gezondheid voor iedereen en aan het met elkaar samenleven in grote steden.

Dat is een stevige opdracht aan onszelf. Dat kunnen we niet alleen. En dat doen we ook niet alleen. Onontbeerlijk daarbij zijn de stad Rotterdam en de steun van ondernemers die nauw met de stad en met onze universiteit zijn verbonden. Die innige relaties vierden wij in ons 21e lustrumjaar met tal van activiteiten onder de titel ‘Science meets City’. Laten we niet vergeten dat op 29 april 1913 met de ‘Vereeniging tot Oprichting eener Nederlandsche Handels-Hoogeschool’, ook de rechtsvoorganger van het Erasmus Trustfonds werd gesticht.

Ruim een eeuw later is het Erasmus Trustfonds voor de universiteit opnieuw een zeer belangrijke en innige partner. Nu onder het motto: ‘Bijdragen aan nóg beter onderwijs en onderzoek’.

Dat ‘bijdragen’ waardeer ik zeer. Zonder het Erasmus Trustfonds was het onderzoek in dit Impact Report er niet geweest. Het Erasmus Trustfonds, met de prachtige campagne Challenge Accepted, is echt nodig en welkom om excellent en baanbrekend impactvol onderzoek en onderwijs te financieren en te ondersteunen. Een prestatie op zich!

Maar het gaat in ons partnerschap om meer dan geld alleen. Het Erasmus Trustfonds is ook heel belangrijk voor het vormen van netwerken waarin we contact houden met alumni, ondernemers, de samenleving. Netwerken die ons een spiegel voorhouden en waarin wij worden bevraagd op onze maatschappelijke relevantie. Dat houdt ons scherp. En dat is nodig voor een universiteit die met haar onderwijs en onderzoek echt werk maakt van maatschappelijke impact.

Message from the rector magnificus The new strategy of the Erasmus University ensures that our university’s education and research has a positive social influence. We want to make a significant contribution to solving major questions concerning sustainable and inclusive prosperity growth, improved public health, and improved quality of life in cities.

We have set quite a goal for ourselves, and we cannot achieve this by ourselves.

And we are not doing it by ourselves. The city of Rotterdam and the support of entrepreneurs who are closely related to the city and our university are indispensable to us. We celebrated these close ties for our 105th anniversary with numerous activities under the theme ‘Science meets City’. And let’s not forget that on April 29, 1913, the Vereeniging tot Oprichting eener Nederlandsche Handels-Hoogeschool (Association to Found a Dutch School of Commerce) was founded – the predecessor of the current Erasmus Trustfonds.

THE ERASMUS TRUSTFONDS ENSURES THAT THE UNIVERSITY CAN REACH ITS POTENTIAL AND POSITIVELY EFFECT OUR SOCIETY, BOTH WITHIN ROTTERDAM AND BEYOND. IT ALSO ENABLES STUDENTS WHO MIGHT NORMALLY NOT HAVE ACCESS TO A UNIVERSITY DEGREE TO ENJOY AN ACADEMIC EDUCATION. THE ERASMUS TRUSTFONDS ALSO OFFERS RESEARCHERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE THEIR WORK TO A HIGHER LEVEL, BY SUPPORTING INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AND PROVIDING MULTI-ANNUAL SUPPORT.

Goal The main objective of the Erasmus Trustfonds is to help the EUR grow and flourish. It does so by providing grants to research projects, disbursing scholarships, and financially supporting various activities undertaken by EUR students and staff. Projects that help the EUR excel and have a social and/or economic impact, but which cannot be funded by the EUR’s regular stream of income, are eligible for support from the Erasmus Trustfonds.

Een deel van de bijdragen is ondergebracht in ‘fondsen op naam’ en ‘bestemmingsfondsen’. Een fonds op naam is een afzonderlijk geadministreerd fonds met een meerjarige levensduur, onder de vleugels van het Erasmus Trustfonds. Het fonds op naam kan een specifieke naam dragen en doelstelling nastreven, uiteraard passend binnen de algehele doelstelling van het Erasmus Trustfonds. Een bestemmingsfonds richt zich op een specifieke doelstelling met een beperkte levensduur.

Over 100 individuals, corporations and grant-making foundations The Erasmus Trustfonds works closely together with the EUR and the Erasmus Alumni Trust, with excellent results. As of the 31st of December 2019, over 100 individuals, corporations, and grant-making foundations have pledged to contribute to the Erasmus Trustfonds. Over €31 million was donated by alumni and Rotterdam families who share the goals of the Erasmus Trustfonds. The board is very grateful to these patrons. Their contributions enable Rotterdam to play its vital part in supporting the EUR. Part of these contributions are made through both so-called ‘named funds’ and ‘designated funds’. A named fund exists under the wings of the Erasmus Trustfonds, but has its own administration and a lifespan of several years. The fund can have its own name and goals, as long as they match the general aims of the Erasmus Trustfonds. Designated funds generally have a limited lifespan.

Both Erasmus Trustfonds and the EUR highly value donor and alumni involvement with the university. That’s why, together with the EUR, we have created an engaging program for these supporters. The Welcome Back program invites alumni back to their Alma Mater for lectures, conferences, and festive ceremonies.

Disbursement

The Erasmus Trustfonds gives out grants and scholarships to (initiatives of) students and researchers of the EUR. With the available means we have a significant impact on the EUR. This is due to the fact that we provide private means, which can be allocated freely (within the goals and aims of the Erasmus Trustfonds).

Zowel het Erasmus Trustfonds als de EUR hechten groot belang aan de betrokkenheid van donateurs en alumni bij de EUR. Daarom hebben wij samen een interessant programma samengesteld voor deze betrokkenen, het Welcome Back-programma, waarbij alumni voor lezingen, conferenties en feestelijke ceremonies worden uitgenodigd op de campus.

Bestedingen Het Erasmus Trustfonds geeft subsidies en studiebeurzen aan (initiatieven van) EUR-studenten en -onderzoekers. De beschikbare middelen leveren een betekenisvolle bijdrage aan de EUR. Dat komt doordat dit private middelen zijn, die (binnen de doelstelling van het Erasmus Trustfonds) vrij toegewezen kunnen worden. Dit in tegenstelling tot het gros van de inkomsten van de EUR, namelijk de Rijksbijdrage en geïnde collegegelden. Het Erasmus Trustfonds kan dan ook juist die activiteiten financieren die niet als vanzelfsprekend gefinancierd worden uit de reguliere inkomsten van de EUR. Het Erasmus Trustfonds maakt zich hard om talentvolle studenten een financieel steuntje in de rug te geven. Naast projecten die vallen binnen de Erasmus Initiatives, waarmee de EUR een maatschappelijke impact nastreeft, alloceert het Erasmus Trustfonds bijdragen aan projecten die vallen binnen de interessegebieden van specifieke donateurs en die aansluiten bij op de EUR aanwezige expertisegebieden, zoals ondernemerschap en duurzaamheid. Tevens biedt het Erasmus Trustfonds financiële ondersteuning aan projecten waarbij de bijdrage van het fonds fungeert als een vliegwiel

voor andere financiële bronnen. Tot slot ondersteunen wij kennisuitwisseling tussen academici.

Historie De oorsprong van het Erasmus Trustfonds gaat terug naar het begin van de 20e eeuw. Eind 19e eeuw werd in verschillende Europese steden hoger handelsonderwijs als nieuwe studie ingevoerd. Rotterdam had zich inmiddels ontwikkeld tot een aanzienlijke havenstad met alles wat daar bij hoort.

Maar de stad ontbeerde mogelijkheden voor hoger onderwijs. Drie initiatiefnemers, de heren mr. W.C. Mees, A. Ruys en C.A.P. van Stolk, wisten in 1913 genoeg personen uit voornamelijk het Rotterdamse bedrijfsleven te mobiliseren om de oprichting van de Nederlandsche Handels-Hoogeschool mogelijk te maken. Op 29 april 1913 werd de Vereeniging tot Oprichting eener Nederlandsche Handels-Hoogeschool gesticht, de rechtsvoorganger van de EUR en het Erasmus Trustfonds. De feestelijke opening van de Nederlandsche Handels-Hoogeschool vond plaats op zaterdag 8 november 1913 in de Groote Zaal der Sociëteit Harmonie, toentertijd gevestigd aan de Coolsingel bij het Hofplein. Op maandag 10 november 1913 gingen de lessen van start voor 55 voltijdstudenten.

In 1939 werd de naam veranderd naar de Nederlandsche Economische Hoogeschool. Vervolgens werden in 1956 omwille van organisatorische, financiële en juridische overwegingen de twee taken van de Vereniging, namelijk de onderwijstechnische en de financieel-beherende taken, over

The Erasmus Trustfonds aims to support research projects that match the Erasmus Initiatives, with which the EUR generates social impact, and also helps out talented students. In addition to the projects that match these conditions, the Erasmus Trustfonds also finances projects that match the interests of specific donors, or that match areas of expertise represented at the EUR, such as entrepreneurship and sustainability. The Erasmus Trustfonds further provides financial support to projects for which our contribution will help attract other sources of financial aid. Finally, we make an effort to increase the exchange of knowledge between academics.

History The origins of the Erasmus Trustfonds go back to the beginning of the 20th century. At the end of the nineteenth century, higher commercial education was introduced as a new study in several European cities. Rotterdam was becoming a prominent port city within the Netherlands, but lacked higher educational opportunities. In 1913 three initiators, mr. W.C. Mees, mr. A. Ruys and

C.A.P. van Stolk, managed to mobilize enough people, mainly from the Rotterdam business community, to establish the Nederlandsche Handels-Hoogeschool (Dutch School of Commerce). On April 29, 1913, the Vereeniging tot Oprichting eener Nederlandsche Handels-Hoogeschool (Association to Found a Dutch School of Commerce), the legal predecessor to the EUR and the Erasmus Trustfonds, was founded. The festive opening of the Nederlandsche Handels-Hoogeschool took place on Saturday, 8 November 1913, in the Groote Zaal of Sociëteit Harmonie, at the time situated on the Coolsingel near the Hofplein. Classes for 55 full-time students started on Monday, 10 November 1913.

In 1939, the school’s name was changed to the Nederlandsche Economische Hoogeschool (the Dutch College of Economics). In 1956, the educational tasks of the Association were separated from the financial-managerial due to organizing, financial, and legal considerations. A separate institution was founded for the second task, namely the NEH (Vereniging tot bevordering van de belangen der Nederlandsche Economische Hoogeschool, or Association for the advancement of the interests of the Dutch School for Higher Economic Education).

In 1963, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Law were added to the NEH, and the name of the NEH fund was changed to Vereniging Trustfonds voor

twee rechtspersonen gesplitst. Voor de tweede taak werd een afzonderlijke instelling opgericht, de Vereniging tot bevordering van de belangen der Nederlandsche Economische Hoogeschool, kortweg het fonds NEH. In 1963 werd de NEH uitgebreid met de Faculteit der Sociale Wetenschappen en de Faculteit der Rechtsgeleerdheid. In hetzelfde jaar werd de naam van het fonds NEH veranderd naar de Vereniging Trustfonds voor Maatschappijwetenschappen. Vervolgens werd in 1966 de Medische Faculteit Rotterdam opgericht.

Een donatie van de Gemeente Rotterdam van één miljoen gulden maakte de oprichting van de Stichting Fonds Medische Faculteit Rotterdam mogelijk.

Op 1 februari 1973 ontstond de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam door het samengaan van de Medische Faculteit Rotterdam met de Nederlandsche Economische Hoogeschool. Vier jaar na deze fusie werden ook de fondsen van beide universiteiten samengevoegd tot één fonds. Na een aantal fusies en splitsingen in de daaropvolgende jaren werd per 1 januari 1991 zowel het vermogen als de voordrachtsrechten ondergebracht bij één vereniging en werd de naam Vereniging Trustfonds Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam vastgesteld.

In 2017 werd de Vereniging nogmaals geherstructureerd om de alumniactiviteiten te splitsen van het beheren van het vermogen, het fondsenwerven en het besteden van het rendement op vermogen. De alumniactiviteiten

zijn nu ondergebracht bij de Erasmus Alumni Trust (tot 2019 onder de naam Vereniging Erasmus Trustfonds) en het beheer van het vermogen, werven van fondsen en besteden van rendement bij de Stichting Erasmus Trustfonds.

Zowel de verbinding tussen heden en verleden, als tussen het Erasmus Trustfonds en de Erasmus Universiteit is sterk zichtbaar en voelbaar. Dit blijkt ook uit de woorden van een van de founding donors: ”Waarom wij donateur zijn van het Erasmus Trustfonds? We werden enthousiast door de mogelijkheden, de uitleg, de begeleiding en het doel dat het Erasmus Trustfonds voor ogen staat. Het motiveerde ons om met de huidige generatie van onze familie, met kinderen en kleinkinderen, voort te zetten wat onze Rotterdamse overgrootvader, grootvader en vader jaren geleden waren begonnen met de oprichting en vervolgens ondersteuning van de Nederlandsche HandelsHoogeschool. Wij hopen dat onze nazaten het Erasmus Trustfonds blijven steunen in de toekomst.

Wij kozen voor het ObesEcare-project en zijn dankbaar voor de begeleiding en openheid van het Erasmus Trustfonds en genieten ook met z’n allen intens van het volgen van het project. A one million guilder donation by the City of Rotterdam made the founding of the Stichting Fonds Medische Faculteit Rotterdam (Rotterdam Medical Faculty Fund Foundation) possible. When the Medical Faculty Rotterdam and the Nederlandsche Economische Hoogeschool merged on February 1st, 1973, the Erasmus University Rotterdam was born. Four years later, the funds of both these universities were combined in a single fund. On January 1st, 1991, after a number of subsequent mergers and splits, both assets and nomination rights were united in a single fund, the Vereeniging Trustfonds Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam (Association Trustfonds Erasmus University Rotterdam).

Samen werken aan een toegankelijke topuniversiteit

De EUR biedt elk jaar onderwijs aan meer dan 31.000 studenten. Jaarlijks studeren zo’n 8.500 studenten af en halen 350 kandidaten hun PhD. De EUR heeft meer dan 3.000 medewerkers en 500 hoogleraren in dienst.

Vanuit de EUR zijn drie ambitieuze thema’s geformuleerd, de Erasmus Initiatives. Smarter Choices for Better Health Dit Initiative draagt bij aan een betere gezondheid door slimmere keuzes.

Met meerjarig multidisciplinair onderzoek wil het Initiative de gezondheidszorg onder andere betaalbaarder, toegankelijker en efficiënter maken.

Vital Cities & Citizens Dit Initiative verbetert de kwaliteit van leven in stedelijke gebieden. In vitale steden kunnen de inwoners hun levensdoelen bereiken door educatie, zinvol werk en deelname aan het publieke leven. De vitale stad is een platform voor creativiteit en diversiteit en een veilige ontmoetingsplaats voor verschillende sociale groepen.

De samenwerking tussen het Erasmus Trustfonds en de EUR is zowel bestuurlijk als uitvoerend. In 2019 is er in de Strategic Campaign Group frequent overleg geweest tussen het bestuur van het Erasmus Trustfonds en het College van Decanen. Daarnaast hebben het bestuur van het Erasmus Trustfonds en het College van Bestuur van de EUR regelmatig de overlappende aandachtspunten en de voortgang van de gezamenlijke missie afgestemd.

Vanuit de uitvoerende organisatie is er regelmatig overleg geweest met de decanen, betrokken hoogleraren, alumnimanagers, projectleiders, grant officers en studentenorganisaties. In 2019 werd onder meer bij de relatieen wervingsactiviteiten en bij het identificeren van passende onderwijs- en onderzoeksprojecten nauw samengewerkt met de EUR.

Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity The Initiative ‘Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity’ focuses on how to ensure a maximum amount of people can benefit from increasing prosperity while minimizing negative consequences. Increased prosperity means the changing needs and values of governments, citizens, companies, and entrepreneurs have to be constantly recalibrated and coordinated.

Smarter Choices for Better Health The EUR aims to improve worldwide health by promoting smarter choices. Longterm multidisciplinary research can make healthcare more accessible, affordable, and efficient.

Vital Cities & Citizens With this Initiative, the EUR wants to improve the quality of life in cities. People living in vital cities are able to fulfill their life goals through education, useful work, and participation in public life. A vital city is a platform for creativity and diversity, and a safe meeting place for different social groups.

The collaboration between the Erasmus Trustfonds and the EUR is both strategic and executive. In 2019, the board of the Erasmus Trustfonds and the Council of Deans have frequently convened in the Strategic Campaign Group. Additionally, the board of the Erasmus Trustfonds and the Executive Board of the EUR align their overlapping goals on a regular basis, thus fine-tuning the progress of their shared mission.

With regards to the executive organisation, the Erasmus Trustfonds has regularly convened and exchanged feedback with deans, involved professors, alumni managers, project leaders, grant officers, and student organisations. In 2019, relation and recruitment activities, as well as the identification of suitable education and research projects were some of the instances in which the EUR and the Erasmus Trustfonds closely collaborated.

Het Erasmus Trustfonds draagt graag bij aan de cyclus die studenten doorlopen tijdens, naast en na hun studie. Wij zijn er voor ondernemende, talentvolle studenten die financiële steun nodig hebben. Het Erasmus Trustfonds ondersteunt die studenten.

Eric Stubbé, één van de founding donors, studeerde aan de RSM. Stubbé geeft aan: “Er is een tijd van krijgen en een tijd van teruggeven, dat is voor mij een belangrijke motivatie. Als oud-student wil ik graag mijn bijdrage leveren aan het wetenschappelijke onderwijs. Net als in Amerika – waar universiteiten veel samenwerken met allerlei welvarende instanties in de samenleving, waaronder het bedrijfsleven. Ik geef hiertoe een aanzet door, via het Erasmus Trustfonds, specifieke onderzoeksprojecten te ondersteunen waar de wetenschap wat aan heeft. Waardoor een promovendus een thesis kan schrijven om op te promoveren. En waar tegelijkertijd het bedrijf ook wat aan heeft. Als dit tot een goede ontwikkeling leidt met ieders belangen in ogenschouw nemend, kan er nog heel veel geld vrijgemaakt worden voor wetenschappelijk onderwijs en dat betekent dus menselijke vooruitgang. Ik hoop en moedig aan dat andere alumni ook gaan meedoen en beveel het Erasmus Trustfonds van harte aan.”

Just like in the United States – where many universities collaborate with all kinds of wealthy institutions in society, including businesses. My aim is to enable a comparable synergy. Via the Erasmus Trustfonds, I support specific research projects that are scientifically relevant, but also interesting for businesses. This enables PhD candidates to complete their research. If we take everybody’s interests into account, including those of businesses, this can increase the financial means available for scientific education, and thus expedite human progress. I hope and encourage other alumni to join as well and warmly recommend the Erasmus Trustfonds.”

De uitgekeerde bedragen zijn ingedeeld in verschillende categorieën. Het overzicht laat het aantal aanvragen en het toegekende bedrag per categorie zien.

Opmerkelijk is de verhouding tussen het aantal aanvragen en het toegekende bedrag in de categorie Congresbezoek. Er zijn relatief veel aanvragen, terwijl er slechts een beperkt bedrag toegekend is aan deze categorie.

Dit komt doordat congresbezoeken doorgaans niet erg kostbaar zijn en promovendi al met een gemiddelde bijdrage van €280,- het congres kunnen bezoeken. Voor de categorie Onderzoek & onderwijs geldt juist het tegenovergestelde. Een relatief beperkt aantal aanvragen krijgt gemiddeld ruim €45.000,-. Enerzijds zijn onderzoeks- & onderwijsprojecten meestal kostbaar aangezien zij vaak enkele maanden of zelfs jaren beslaan. The amount of applications is relatively large, whereas the amount granted in this category is comparatively small. This is because conference participations are relatively inexpensive, and a contribution of just over €280,- is sufficient for PhD candidates to participate in a conference. The opposite holds for the category Research & Education. A limited number of applications receive an average of over €45.000,-. On the one hand, research and education projects are usually relatively expensive as they often run for several months or even years. THE EUR STRIVES FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE THROUGH MULTIDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH. THE ERASMUS INITIATIVES ARE ALSO DESIGNED TO WORK TOWARDS SOLVING MAJOR SOCIAL ISSUES.

In order to acknowledge passionate academics and students, the Erasmus Trustfonds provides funds to finance prizes for outstanding research and education.

Furthermore, the Erasmus Trustfonds favours projects where our contribution can help attract grants from other parties. For example, co-funding for applications at large subsidy programs of third parties, that require a contribution of EUR and other parties for the subsidy to be granted. The Erasmus Trustfonds always provides these co-funding contributions in the form of a guarantee that is only paid after the larger application is granted, and the project is executed as planned.

Research for Health Impact in Africa ontwerpt en evalueert veelbelovende interventies om de gezondheid te verbeteren. Dankzij de meerjarige ondersteuning vanuit het D.P. Hoijer Fonds, een fonds op naam binnen het Erasmus Trustfonds, kunnen diverse disciplines gedurende meerdere jaren binnen dit project samenwerken. Het project vergelijkt interventies en programma’s tussen en binnen Afrikaanse landen. Zo kunnen de onderzoekers brede conclusies trekken en beleid formuleren. Hierna volgt een aantal voorbeelden.

Research for Health Impact in Africa THE TECHNICAL AND MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE TO IMPROVE PUBLIC HEALTH IN AFRICA IS READILY AVAILABLE, BUT ACCESS TO CARE AND PREVENTION PROGRAMS IS OFTEN INSUFFICIENT. IN THE PROJECT ‘RESEARCH FOR HEALTH IMPACT IN AFRICA’, AN INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH TEAM INVESTIGATES HOW HEALTHCARE CAN BECOME MORE ACCESSIBLE TO THOSE WHO NEED IT, THUS IMPROVING PUBLIC HEALTH IN AFRICA.

Research for Health Impact in Africa designs and evaluates promising interventions to improve health. The D.P. Hoijer Fonds, a named fund at the Erasmus Trustfonds, has enabled a prolonged cooperation between researchers from different disciplines with their financial support, which spans several years. The project compares interventions and programs in different African countries and regions,

Micro-ondernemers verbeteren toegang tot medicijnen in Uganda Een veelbelovende strategie om de toegang tot gezondheidsdiensten en projecten te verbeteren is via een netwerk van micro-ondernemers (Community Health Entrepreneurs). Deze ondernemers baten kleine apotheekjes uit via een franchisesysteem waarmee ze betaalbare diensten en producten aanbieden in afgelegen dorpen, zoals anticonceptiva, maandverband, zeep en gezondheidsinformatie. De impact van dit programma wordt geëvalueerd en bestudeerd om erachter te komen hoe deze benadering het best kan worden ingepast in bestaande gezondheidssystemen.

Gemeenschapsprogramma’s voor verbeterde moeder- en kindzorg in Ethiopië Verscheidene Afrikaanse landen hebben initiatieven ontwikkeld op gemeenschapsniveau om de volksgezondheid te verbeteren. Zo heeft de Ethiopische regering een gemeenschap-gebaseerde gezondheidszorgverzekering (community based health insurance) opgezet en traint ze vrouwelijke vrijwilligers (de zogenoemde Health Development Army) om de gezondheid in lokale gemeenschappen te verbeteren. Micro-entrepreneurs improve access to medicines in Uganda A promising strategy to improve public access to healthcare is through a network of micro-entrepreneurs. These Community Health Entrepreneurs run small pharmacies. A franchise system enables them to offer services and products in remote villages, such as contraceptives, sanitary towels, soap, and health care information. Researchers are studying the impact of this program and investigating how to best implement this approach in existing health care systems.

Community programs for improved maternal and childcare in Ethiopia Several African countries have developed initiatives to improve public health at a local level. The Ethiopian government, for example, has set up community-based health insurance and trains female volunteers (the so-called Health Development Army) to improve health in local communities. The volunteers encourage pregnant women to go to the clinic for check-ups, to eat healthily, to live hygienically, and to give birth in a clinic. The effects of these interventions on health and access to healthcare are being studied.

Verbeteren van medicijngebruik in Zuid-Afrika Zelfs als gezondheidszorg beschikbaar is, zijn er vaak andere factoren waardoor zieke mensen niet naar de dokter gaan of hun medicijnkuur niet afmaken. Dit laatste is vooral bij tuberculose een probleem, omdat de medicijnkuur lang duurt. In Zuid-Afrika, waar de tuberculose prevalentie het hoogst ter wereld is, wordt onderzocht hoe men patiënten kan aanmoedigen om toch hun kuur af te maken, bijvoorbeeld door sms-reminders te sturen of wachttijden bij klinieken te verkorten.

Vertalen van kennis naar beleid en praktijk Samen met partners in verschillende Afrikaanse landen werkt de onderzoeksgroep aan een vertaling van kennis naar beleid en praktijk en aan onderzoek om deze vertaling te verbeteren. Dit gebeurt onder meer door beleidsdialogen, ook wel deliberative dialogues genoemd, te organiseren met beleidsmakers, onderzoekers en andere stakeholders. Hierin werkt de onderzoeksgroep nauw samen met verschillende internationale netwerken zoals Share-Net International, Cochrane en de WHO. Het D.P. Hoijer Fonds steunt dit omvangrijke project sinds 2017 met €2.500.000,- verdeeld over meerdere jaren. In 2019 werd het project financieel ondersteund met €191.938,-.

55 Improving medicine use in South Africa Even where healthcare is available, other factors may prevent sick people from going to the doctor or finishing their medication treatments. The latter applies particularly to patients with tuberculosis, because the drug treatment takes a long time. In South Africa, the country with the highest tuberculosis prevalence in the world, research is being conducted on how one can best encourage patients to finish their treatment, for example by sending text-message reminders and shortening waiting times in clinics.

Turning knowledge into policy and practice The research group collaborates with partners in various African countries to translate the knowledge gained into improved policy and practice. They are also investigating how to do so more efficiently, by organising deliberative dialogues with policy makers, researchers, and other stakeholders. The research group works closely together with several international networks such as Share-Net International, Cochrane, and the WHO.

The D.P. Hoijer Fonds supports this comprehensive project with €2.500.000 disbursed over several years. In 2019, financial support for the project amounted to €191.938.

Het is moeilijk om het belang van René Descartes te overdrijven voor de wetenschap en samenleving van vandaag. Descartes zelf zag een sterke correlatie tussen zijn wetenschappelijke en zijn filosofische werk en het is in zijn correspondentie dat de twee onlosmakelijk met elkaar zijn verweven.

Het toepassen van de algebra op de geometrie is een pijler van de moderne wetenschap. Cartesiaanse coördinaten stellen satellieten in staat om verre planeten te omcirkelen en kometen te passeren. Op een meer alledaags niveau vinden wij met behulp van GPS onze bestemming.

 Filosoof René Descartes

Dr. Erik-Jan Bos van de ESPhil, co-editor en hoofdcoördinator van het project, leidt een internationaal team van onderzoekers op het gebied van filosofie, wiskunde en de geschiedenis van de wetenschap dat gezamenlijk onderzoek doet naar René Descartes. Het onderzoek zal resulteren in een kritische editie van ongeveer 800 van de bekende brieven van Descartes, samen met volledige Engelse vertalingen van de originele teksten.

Met de aanstelling van dr. Erik-Jan Bos en de betrokkenheid van professor Han van Ruler (ESPhil) is de EUR de thuisinstelling geworden voor dit prestigieuze project, waarbinnen nauw wordt samengewerkt met de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. Het project versterkt de internationale reputatie van de onderzoeksgroep Geschiedenis van de Filosofie bij ESPhil als leverancier van eersteklas redactionele projecten met betrekking tot de geschiedenis van de filosofie in Nederland. Het Erasmus Trustfonds heeft dit project gesteund met €10.000,-. Met het initiële onderzoek dat kon worden uitgevoerd dankzij deze bijdrage, kon prof.dr. Han van Ruler het belang van het onderzoek aantonen aan externe financiers. Hierdoor kreeg Van Ruler voor dit onderzoek een beurs van de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) van €750.000,- toegekend.

Descartes’ correspondentie is een schatkamer van de zeventiende-eeuwse filosofie en wetenschap. De publicatie van de nieuwe editie is al geaccepteerd door Oxford University Press na zeer positieve beoordelingsrapporten die verwezen naar de ‘extreem hoge standaard’ van het redactionele werk en vermeldden dat deze editie ‘de wetenschap naar een nieuw niveau tilt’.

In de praktijk blijkt het aanbod van ondersteuning en zorg op het gebied van leefstijlverandering vaak gebaseerd op standaardadviezen voor dieet en lichaamsbeweging: ‘meer bewegen en minder eten’. De barrières om tot een gezond gewicht te komen, liggen echter regelmatig op andere vlakken zoals stress, gebrek aan gezondheidsvaardigheden, (inhibitie)controle, culturele of pedagogische factoren, slaapgebrek of (eetlust verhogend) medicatiegebruik. Ook biologische factoren zoals genetische aanleg, hormonale problemen of vertraagde stofwisseling kunnen fors bijdragen aan gewichtstoename. Obesitasbehandeling is daarom zeer complex.

Dr. Erica van den Akker en prof.dr. Liesbeth van Rossum (Erasmus MC) doen onderzoek naar obesitasbehandeling. Ten behoeve van een behandeling op

In practice, most advice and support provided to people struggling to change their lifestyle boils down to “eat less, exercise more”. However, the barriers making a healthy bodyweight unattainable often lie with other causes, such as stress, a lack of health skills, (inhibition) control, cultural or pedagogic factors, sleep deprivation, or medication use (which may slow down the metabolism). Biological factors like genetic predisposition, hormonal problems, or a slow metabolism can contribute to significant weight gain. This is why obesity treatment is in fact highly complex.

maat bekijken zij onder andere voor wie welke behandeling effectief is. Dit wordt gedaan door verschillende methoden voor het tegengaan van obesitas te koppelen aan kenmerken van obesitaspatiënten, om te zien welke behandeling het beste past bij een patiënt. Daarnaast worden de bevindingen van dit onderzoek verwerkt in een digitale tool. Het bouwen en het implementeren van deze obesitas E-CARE tool maakt eveneens deel uit van het project. De Elisabeth Foundation, een fonds op naam binnen het Erasmus Trustfonds, steunt dit programma. In 2019 werd in totaal €419.808,- toegekend aan het project en ook de komende drie jaar kan het project op steun rekenen. Deze meerjarige steun zorgt ervoor dat het onderzoeksteam kon worden uitgebreid en het wetenschappelijk onderzoek sneller en op grotere schaal kan worden uitgevoerd, terwijl de resultaten direct teruggekoppeld kunnen worden via maatschappelijke partners.  Prof.dr. Dit onderzoek heeft een grote impact op de medische wereld voor wat betreft overgewicht en obesitas. Door het creëren van individuele patiëntprofielen en het implementeren van een online tool om mensen advies te geven over hun leefstijl, krijgen mensen met obesitas of overgewicht de hulp die nodig is. Zo zal dit onderzoek uiteindelijk leiden tot een gezonder Nederland.

Tijdens de Rotterdam Lezing gaf Van Rossum voor meer dan 350 bezoekers een presentatie over haar onderzoek naar obesitasbestrijding. Ook in de Nederlandse media kan Liesbeth van Rossum met dit project rekenen op veel aandacht.

Dr. Erica van den Akker and prof.dr. Liesbeth van Rossum (Erasmus MC) conduct research on obesity treatment. In order to find tailor-made treatments, they investigate what kind of treatments work for whom. They do so by linking different methods for combating obesity to different characteristics of obesity patients, to see who might need what kind of treatment. They also process their findings in the digital E-CARE tool, the construction of which is also part of this project.

The Elisabeth Foundation, a named fund at the Erasmus Trustfonds, supports this program. They granted €419.808 in 2019, and will continue to provide funds in the coming three years. This guarantee enables researchers to expand their team and conduct their research more effectively and on a larger scale, while also sharing their results with social partners.

This research has a major impact on the medical world with regards to overweight and obesity. By creating individual patient profiles and implementing an online tool to provide people with treatment advice, obese or overweight people receive the aid they need. This research will eventually lead to a healthier society.

During the Rotterdam Lezing (a yearly lecture organized by the EUR), Van Rossum presented her research on obesity treatment to over 350 visitors.

Liesbeth van Rossum and this project also receive a lot of attention in the Dutch media.

Onderzoeksprijs en Onderwijsprijs 2019

Naast de Onderzoeksprijs reikt de EUR ook elk jaar de Onderwijsprijs uit aan een lid van de wetenschappelijke staf dat een bijzonder lovenswaardige bijdrage heeft geleverd aan het onderwijs binnen de universiteit. Dit jaar is prof.dr. Han Smit de winnaar van de Onderwijsprijs. Hij is sinds 2001 werkzaam als hoogleraar bij de ESE en is momenteel hoogleraar Corporate Finance. Smit geeft onderwijs in Corporate Finance en was visiting fellow bij NIAS (Netherlands Institute of Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences). Smit is een zeer gewaardeerd docent door zijn enthousiasme en zijn motiverende manier van onderwijs geven.

Zijn onderzoek naar de gezondheidseconomie en de economie van veroudering is van groot belang voor de samenleving in Nederland en daarbuiten. Met zijn onderzoek maakt Herl zowel maatschappelijke als academische impact.

This year’s winner of the Education Prize is prof.dr. Han Smit, who has been working as a professor at the Erasmus School of Economics since 2001. He teaches Corporate Finance and was a visiting fellow at NIAS (Netherlands Institute of Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences).

Smit’s enthusiasm and highly motivating way of teaching making him a very appreciated lecturer.

Dr. Liesbeth Noordegraaf-Eelens (ESPhil) doet samen met dr. Virginie Servant-Miklos (EUC) onder andere onderzoek naar de verbinding tussen het vmbo en de EUR. Experimenten stimuleren vmbo-leerlingen actief om na te denken over sociale problemen en met projecten wordt geprobeerd het universitair onderwijs aantrekkelijk te maken. Door vmbo’ers deel te laten nemen aan leerprocessen en ze te laten samenwerken met studenten aan de EUR wordt gepoogd de leerlingen vertrouwen te geven in hun leervermogen, zodat zij een universitaire studie gaan zien als een optie voor hun vervolgstudie. Het Erasmus Trustfonds steunt samen met het Familie Atsma Fonds dit onderzoek, dat past binnen het Erasmus Initiative ‘Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity’, met €35.000,-. Met dit geld worden onder andere de experimenten tijdens dit onderzoek gefinancierd.

VANUIT HET ERASMUS INITIATIVE ‘SMARTER CHOICES FOR BETTER HEALTH’ IS IN JANUARI 2019 HET PROJECT PERSIST (PERSONALIZED INCENTIVES FOR SUPPORTING SMOKING CESSATION) GESTART. IN DIT PROJECT WORDT ONDERZOCHT OF PERSOON-SPECIFIEKE FINANCIËLE PRIKKELS IN COMBINATIE MET GROEPSTRAINING EEN EFFECTIEVE MANIER ZIJN OM ROKERS VAN HUN VERSLAVING AF TE HELPEN.

Uit eerder onderzoek weten we dat financiële prikkels helpen bij het stoppen met roken. De innovatie van dit project is om van een ‘one-size-fitsall’ benadering naar een benadering te gaan waarbij rokers zelf inspraak hebben in het type financiële prikkel dat zij ontvangen. Rokers kunnen bijvoorbeeld een volledige compensatie krijgen als ze zes maanden zijn gestopt, of juist kiezen voor een flink deel van de compensatie vlak na de eerste groepstraining om zo de motivatie te houden. Ze kunnen ook zelf geld inleggen dat alleen wordt terugbetaald bij een succesvolle stoppoging, waarmee ze een extra zelf-geïnduceerde prikkel toevoegen. Het onderzoek wordt uitgevoerd met een gerandomiseerd experiment onder medewerkers van het Erasmus MC, waarin zij willekeurig worden toegewezen aan een schema met financiële prikkels of zonder. De eerste groep medewerkers is voor de zomer van 2019 gestart en de eerste ervaringen zijn zeer positief.2 De maatschappelijke bijdrage is om deze innovatieve experimentele set-up in te zetten om rokende medewerkers van het Erasmus MC– de grootste werkgever van de gemeente Rotterdam – te helpen zich aan te passen aan de rookvrije omgeving die in september 2019 is ingegaan.3 Ook het Franciscus Gasthuis & Vlietland en het Ikazia Ziekenhuis Rotterdam willen aansluiten bij het experiment.

CHANGE THIS, AND TO STIMULATE VMBO STUDENTS TO PURSUE AN ACADEMIC DEGREE?

Dr. Liesbeth Noordegraaf-Eelens (ESPhil) and dr. Virginie Servant-Miklos (EUC) are investigating the connections between vmbo education and the EUR. Their experiments stimulate vmbo students to reflect on social problems. Through specific projects, they aim to entice vmbo students to consider pursuing an academic degree.

Vmbo students participate in the learning process and collaborate with EUR students. This boosts their confidence in their learning abilities, and helps them realize that a university education is attainable for them as well. The Erasmus Trustfonds and the Familie Atsma Fonds support this research, which is part of the Erasmus Initiative ‘Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity’, with a €35.000 grant. This money is used for the experiments conducted during this research, among other things.

Hiermee financieren deze fondsen onder andere de aanschaf van een database met voor dit onderzoek essentiële data.

Er is al veel onderzoek gedaan naar de eurocrisis en de rol van staatsobligaties binnen deze crisis, maar het plaatje is nog niet compleet. Tot nu toe lag de focus bij het onderzoeken van staatsobligaties altijd op het kredietrisico.

Hoewel het belang van liquiditeit en de daaraan verbonden risico’s in de financiële wereld overal bekend zijn, zorgt een tekort aan data van goede kwaliteit voor een gebrek aan inzicht in dit onderwerp. Er moet nog steeds onderzoek worden gedaan naar belangrijke verbanden tussen krediet- en liquiditeitsrisico’s en hoe de ECB deze risico’s beïnvloedt.

Het onderzoek past binnen het Erasmus Initiative ‘Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity’. Binnen dit Initiative is de financiële sector een belangrijk thema.

Het onderzoek van Pieterse-Bloem sluit hierbij aan. Het is belangrijk om een beeld te krijgen van het gedrag van bankiers en traders, maar ook van particulieren binnen de financiële sector. Wanneer deze sector namelijk goed werkt, zorgt dit voor meer welvaart binnen een land. Het onderzoek naar de liquiditeit van staatsobligaties binnen Europa kan belangrijke welvaartseffecten in kaart brengen.

Samen met prof.dr. Marta Gomez-Puig en prof.dr. Simon Sosvilla-Rivero van de Universidad Complutense de Madrid, gaat prof.dr. Mary Pieterse-Bloem van de ESE onderzoek doen naar determinanten van opbrengsten van staatsobligaties binnen de Eurozone met een focus op liquiditeit. Ook wordt

Despite the abundance of research on the Euro crisis and the role of government bonds therein, the puzzle is still not complete. Most of these investigations on government bonds focused on creditworthiness. At the same time, despite the well-established importance of liquidity, there is a shortage of high-quality data on liquidity risks in this crisis. There is still a need for research on important relations between credit and liquidity risks, and how the ECB influences them.

Communicatie tussen de grote en kleine hersenen HOE WERKEN ONZE HERSENEN? DE ONDERZOEKSGROEP VAN PROF.DR CHRIS DE

De onderzoeksgroep van De Zeeuw ontwikkelde een zeer geavanceerde methode om minuscule activiteiten in de hersenen vast te leggen. Het Erasmus Trustfonds en het Medical Breakthrough Fund, een fonds op naam binnen het Erasmus Trustfonds, hebben een subsidie van in totaal €49.000,- gegeven aan de onderzoeksgroep om te ontrafelen hoe het kan dat mensen - in tegenstelling tot bijvoorbeeld robots - vloeiende, met precisie gestuurde bewegingen kunnen maken.

Promovenda Carmen Schäfer deed met behulp van de nieuw ontwikkelde methode specifiek onderzoek naar de aansturing van bewegingen door de hersenen. In haar onderzoek kijkt ze naar het sensomotorische systeem van de hersenen dat van essentieel belang is voor het uitvoeren van vloeiende bewegingen. In de primaire motorische cortex initiëren neuronen spieractiviteit door motorneuronen in de hersenstam en het ruggenmerg aan te sturen, terwijl neuronen in de kleine hersenen signalen afgeven die ervoor zorgen dat de beweging vloeiend en verfijnd wordt. Zo ontdekte ze dat de kleine en grote hersenen direct met elkaar communiceren bij het aansturen van bewegingen. De subsidie van het Erasmus Trustfonds en het Medical Breakthrough Fund stelde Schäfer in staat haar onderzoek verder uit te bouwen.

De bevindingen van de onderzoeksgroep van De Zeeuw leveren een fundamentele bijdrage aan de kennis over de manier waarop onze hersenen werken. Deze kennis kan worden ingezet in tal van toepassingen zoals het verfijnen van de bewegingen van robots, maar ook om protheses meer natuurlijk te laten bewegen en om toepassingen te ontwikkelen die ervoor zorgen dat mensen met een hersenbeschadiging niet langer hinder ondervinden van deze beschadiging.

Het revolutionaire karakter van het onderzoek sluit nauw aan bij de doelstelling van het Medical Breakthrough Fund: het ondersteunen van onderzoek en andere activiteiten die medische innovatie en medische doorbraken mogelijk maken.

Het Jong Ondernemerschap Fonds steunde dit project in 2019 met €194.152,-. De oprichters van het Jong Ondernemerschap Fonds, Raymond en Colette Cloosterman–Van Eerd, vinden het erg belangrijk dat studenten ondernemende vaardigheden ontwikkelen.

Het Vandenbossche Wielema Fonds is speciaal bestemd voor de bevordering van onderzoek naar Spinoza en zijn Nederlandse bewonderaars. Het onderzoek sluit daarom goed aan bij dit fonds. Daarnaast past dit onderzoek perfect binnen de aanwezige expertise op het gebied van Nederlands Spinozisme aan de ESPhil. Naast dr. Jeroen M.M. van de Ven is ook prof.dr.

Van de Ven’s onderzoek kijkt vanuit een historisch-filosofisch, bibliografisch en cultureel opzicht naar het leven van Spinoza. The Vandenbossche Wielema Fonds is dedicated to promoting further research on Spinoza and his Dutch admirers, which is why Van de Ven’s research matches the goals of this fund. The research also suits the ESPhil’s expertise in the area of Dutch Spinoza research, which includes prof.dr. Wiep van Bunge as the school’s other major Spinoza specialist.

OF THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY. HIS WRITINGS ARE STILL SUBJECT TO ACADEMIC RESEARCH, BUT HIS LIFE IS CLOUDED BY MYTH AND MYSTERY, WHICH CREATES A WARPED UNDERSTANDING OF SPINOZA – NOT JUST AS AN INDIVIDUAL, BUT ALSO OF HIM AS A PHILOSOPHER.

Van Bunge indicates: “The scientific importance of this research is clear. Interest in Spinoza across the globe has increased over the past decades, both among academics and amateurs. As Dutch researchers, we have a seat on the front row: Spinoza is, after all, a child of our Golden Age.”

Dr. Jeroen M.M. van de Ven (ESPhil) is trying to shed some light on Spinoza’s life.

Van de Ven’s well-documented chronology provides a clear view of the famous Dutch philosopher’s life. Van de Ven examines Spinoza’s life from a historical, philosophical, bibliographic, and cultural perspective. The Vandenbossche Wielema Fonds, a named fund within the Erasmus Trustfonds, is supporting the research with €70.000.

IN ROTTERDAM. BEIDE GROEPEN HEBBEN VAAK ANDERE WERELDBEELDEN EN OPVATTINGEN. MAAR KUNNEN DEZE TWEE GROEPEN WELLICHT IETS VAN ELKAAR LEREN?

Met een educatief project gaat een interdisciplinair onderzoeksteam dat bestaat uit prof.dr. Semiha Denktas (ESSB en Chief Diversity Officer), prof. dr. Lucas Meijs en dr. Lonneke Roza (beiden RSM), Lisenne Giel en dr. Gera Noordzij (beiden ESSB en EUC), studenten van de EUR en jongeren uit Rotterdamse krachtwijken met elkaar in contact brengen om met en van elkaar te leren. Aan de hand van dit project wordt onderzoek gedaan naar service learning (leren door maatschappelijk engagement) en wordt bezien of deze leermethode bijdraagt aan de maatschappelijke ontwikkeling van studenten. De studenten en jongeren die deelnemen aan het educatieve project worden voorbereid met een training, om vervolgens onder andere met elkaar in discussie te gaan. Het project zal de jongeren leren hoe complex de samenleving in elkaar zit en zal ze helpen bij het creëren van een realistischer wereldbeeld.

Prof.dr. Thea Hilhorst (ISS) probeert met haar project het bestuur van ontwikkelingslanden in tijden van natuur- en andere rampen te verbeteren.

Zij focust hierbij met name op de manier waarop een overheid na een ramp meer aandacht kan bieden aan kwetsbare groepen binnen een stad. Ze streeft in haar onderzoek naar oplossingen die rampenbestrijding ‘inclusiever’ maken. Het project richt zich op landen ten zuiden van de evenaar, omdat steden in dit gebied door klimaatverandering en verstedelijking gevoeliger zijn voor rampen.

Dit project past binnen het Erasmus Initiative ‘Vital Cities and Citizens’. Het Erasmus Trustfonds heeft €49.000,- beschikbaar gesteld voor het project.

De bijdrage stelt professor Hilhorst en haar collega’s in staat een grote subsidieaanvraag in te dienen bij de NWO.

Dr.ir. Jasper Eshuis (Associate Professor ESSB) doet onderzoek naar de governance van emoties van burgers in burgerparticipatieprojecten rondom stedelijke vastgoedontwikkeling. Het doel van het onderzoek is om te achterhalen hoe emoties van invloed zijn in burgerparticipatie bij besluitvormingsprocedures. Hiervoor voert Eshuis twee labexperimenten uit over de regulering van emoties onder burgers. De experimenten vinden plaats aan de prestigieuze University of California, Berkeley, en aan de EUR. Door het gebruik van geavanceerde technieken zoals het monitoren van gezichtsuitdrukking, kunnen emoties nauwkeurig gemeten worden. Deze technieken worden in het onderzoek gebruikt om het effect van emoties op verschillende situaties te onderzoeken. Het Timeless Grant, een bestemmingsfonds onder het Erasmus Trustfonds, steunt dit onderzoek waardoor Eshuis kon samenwerken met de University of California.

Dit onderzoek valt binnen het Erasmus Initiative ‘Vital Cities and Citizens’. Dit Initiative zet zich in voor het bijdragen aan de kwaliteit van leven in stedelijke gebieden. Doordat dit onderzoek het effect van emoties van burgers op overheden beter in kaart brengt, kunnen overheden met de uitkomsten van dit onderzoek streven naar een betere burgerparticipatie bij stedelijke ontwikkeling.

Eshuis geeft aan: “Emoties van bewoners spelen een belangrijke rol bij vastgoedontwikkelingen, zeker in onze huidige dramademocratie. Boze bewoners kunnen projecten vertragen. Enthousiaste bewoners kunnen gebiedsontwikkeling juist versterken/versnellen. In de Bay Area (San Francisco/Berkeley) en Nederland slagen we er niet in voldoende nieuwe woningen te realiseren. De emoties rond vastgoedontwikkeling lopen hoog op en beïnvloeden woningbouwprojecten.

Dit project geeft inzicht in hoe we op die emoties kunnen sturen.”

Jan Tinbergen is een wetenschapper die een grote impact heeft gehad met zijn werken. Hij was een geweldig denker, niet alleen op het gebied van economie, maar ook op het gebied van filosofie en sociologie. Met dit door het Erasmus Trustfonds gesteunde onderzoek wordt de ware omvang van de impact van Jan Tinbergen op de wereld nog eens benadrukt.

Prof.dr. Jack Vromen (ESPhil) zal met zijn onderzoek nieuw licht werpen op Jan Tinbergen als denker. Vromen kijkt tijdens zijn onderzoek vooral naar het verband tussen de werken van Tinbergen en belangrijke vragen in de economie en filosofie. Ook kijkt hij naar de filosofische standpunten van Tinbergen om te laten zien dat de nobelprijswinnaar op alle vlakken van de wetenschap een enorme impact heeft gehad. Hoewel Tinbergen zichzelf niet als filosoof zag, had hij wel ethische standpunten die uit zijn socialistische waarden vloeiden.

ECONOMETRICS HAS STRONGLY INFLUENCED ECONOMIC THOUGHT. BUT HIS INFLUENCE HAS REACHED FAR BEYOND THE ECONOMIC SCIENCES.

The research of prof.dr. Jack Vromen (ESPhil) will shed new light on Jan Tinbergen as a thinker. In particular, Vromen examines the relation between Tinbergen’s works and important questions in economy and philosophy. He also investigates Tinbergen’s philosophical convictions to demonstrate his enormous influence on many different aspects of science. Although Tinbergen didn’t consider himself to be a philosopher, he did have a clear system of ethics – derived from his socialist values and convictions.

Masters Honours Programma: Tackling Inequalities TACKLING INEQUALITIES IS EEN MULTIDISCIPLINAIR HONOURS PROGRAMMA VOOR MASTERSTUDENTEN AAN DE EUR. DIT ONDERWIJSPROGRAMMA VOOR EXCELLENTE

Het eerste deel van het programma biedt masterclasses van academici die verbonden zijn aan de Erasmus Initiatives. Met de kennis uit deze masterclasses gaan de masterstudenten vervolgens in het tweede deel van het programma aan de slag. In drie groepen pakken de studenten een Rotterdams vraagstuk op dat ingaat op ongelijkheid. Ze doen onderzoek in Rotterdam en in een buitenlandse stad waar zij kijken hoe daar het vraagstuk wordt opgelost. Aan de hand van de kennis die zij tijdens de masterclasses hebben opgedaan en hun eigen onderzoek, doen de studenten suggesties voor oplossingen van de vraagstukken.

Het A.A. van Beek Fonds, het grootste fonds op naam onder het Erasmus Trustfonds, steunt de internationale component van het Masters Honours Programma.

The first part of the program offers masterclasses by academics connected to the Erasmus Initiatives. Master students use the knowledge from these masterclasses in the second half of the program. In three different groups, the students tackle a Rotterdam problem pertaining to inequality. They do research both in Rotterdam and in a foreign city, where they will examine how the problem is dealt with there. Using the knowledge and experience from the masterclasses and their own research, they will suggest how to solve these problems.

The A.A. van Beek Fonds, the largest named fund within the Erasmus Trustfonds, supports the international component of the Masters Honours Program.

In het onderzoek getiteld ‘Performing Sensitive Pasts: Exploring Historical Reenactments in Europe and Indonesia’ doet Lise Zurné (PhD-kandidaat bij de ESHCC) onderzoek naar de manier waarop historische gebeurtenissen worden gereconstrueerd en nagespeeld tijdens hedendaagse (populaire) evenementen. Ze kijkt onder andere naar wat dit doet met het historisch

bewustzijn van deelnemers. Ook bekijkt zij hoe wordt omgegaan met ethische dilemma’s, want mag je het lijden van een ander eigenlijk wel reconstrueren?

In het kader van dit onderzoek ontving Zurné een bijdrage van het Erasmus Trustfonds om tien weken onderzoek te doen naar historische reconstructies van de kolonisatie in Indonesië. Ze onderzocht in het bijzonder de 75ste herdenking van de Serangan Umum 1 Maret, oftewel het Algemene Offensief van 1 maart 1949. Deze herdenking staat stil bij de slag die het einde van de kolonisatie van Indonesië door Nederland inluidde. Uit haar observaties blijkt hoe gevoelig de historische reconstructies liggen. Zo besloot het Nationale Leger de dag voor het evenement af te zien van de inzet van 4.000 van de eigen soldaten tijdens het evenement, omdat men niet de schijn van politieke propaganda wilde wekken in aanloop naar de presidentsverkiezingen. De diverse betrokkenen gingen bovendien op zeer verschillende wijze om met deze evenementen. In tegenstelling tot het Nationale Leger wilden het Ministerie van Cultuur en lokale vertegenwoordigers het evenement juist inzetten als viering in het kader van de rebranding van Yogyakarta (een stad midden op het eiland Java). Deze tegengestelde belangen resulteerden uiteindelijk in een chaotische herdenking, waar Zurné getuige van was.

Om onderzoek te doen naar de manier waarop in de VS gebruik wordt gemaakt van het principe van toezicht door de thuisstaat, bezocht De Arriba-Sellier de prestigieuze Duke University School of Law. Diverse onderzoekers op dit onderwerp deelden hun expertise met De Arriba-Sellier, waaronder professor Lawrence Baxter. Met de bijdrage vanuit het Erasmus Trustfonds kon De Arriba-Sellier naar de VS afreizen en daar verblijven om toezichthouders, lobbyisten en advocaten te interviewen.

REGULERING IN DE BANKWERELD.

De research visit stelde Mayer naast het verder ontwikkelen van zijn onderzoek, in de gelegenheid om nieuwe samenwerkingen aan te gaan, zijn academische onderzoeksnetwerk uit te breiden en belangrijke onderzoeksvaardigheden te leren van excellente onderzoekers. Dit alles was mogelijk dankzij de steun vanuit het STOER Fonds, een fonds op naam binnen het Erasmus Trustfonds.

Stella Nieuwenburg ging naar een conferentie in San Diego (VS) genaamd de ‘Digestive Disease Week 2019’. Op deze conferentie waren meer dan 14.000 artsen en onderzoekers uit de hele wereld aanwezig die zich richten op aandoeningen van de buikorganen. Er werden circa 5.000 presentaties gegeven.

Nieuwenburg presenteerde haar werk over risicofactoren voor de progressie van premaligne (een type voorstadia van kanker) maagafwijkingen. Van het Erasmus Trustfonds kreeg ze hiervoor €250,-.

Ellen Minkman ging in juni 2019 naar Montreal (Canada) om de vierde editie van de Conference on Public Policy bij te wonen. Tijdens de conferentie presenteerde Minkman haar eigen onderzoek, met als titel ‘Public Policy Transfer: Power, Unconventional Agents, Directions and Translations’. De conferentie inspireerde Minkman om te werken aan een nieuw onderzoek naar de rol van overstijgende administratie in de Nederlandse deltawerken. Het Erasmus Trustfonds stelde €350,- beschikbaar voor Minkman om deel te nemen aan de conferentie.

MEEST RECENTE ONTWIKKELINGEN IN HUN VAKGEBIED. 2019 WAS HET LAATSTE JAAR DAT HET ERASMUS TRUSTFONDS CONGRESBEZOEKEN FINANCIEEL ONDERSTEUNDE VANUIT DE ONGEOORMERKTE MIDDELEN.

Annet Haarman en Eric Thee gingen bijvoorbeeld naar ‘The AVRO Annual Meeting 2019 Vancouver’ in Canada. Dit is een internationaal congres voor oogheelkundig onderzoek. Het programma van het congres bestond uit presentaties van nieuw onderzoek en keynote lectures. Haarman en Thee gaven zelf ieder een posterpresentatie. Haarman gaf uitleg over haar onderzoek naar retinale complicaties (problemen aan het netvlies) bij myopie (bijziendheid) onder Europeanen in vergelijking met Aziaten. Thee presenteerde zijn onderzoek naar artificial intelligence en een deep learning algoritme om automatische detectie van de oogziekte AMD (netvliesveroudering) te valideren. Het Erasmus Trustfonds stelde aan Haarman en Thee €500,- per persoon beschikbaar om deel te kunnen nemen aan dit congres.

Annet Haarman and Eric Thee visited ‘The AVRO Annual Meeting 2019 Vancouver’ in Canada, an international conference for ophthalmic research. The conference program consisted of keynote lectures and presentations of new research.

Haarman and Thee both gave their own poster presentation. Haarman exposed her research on retinal complications in cases of myopia among Europeans compared to Asians. Thee presented his research on artificial intelligence and a deep-learning algorithm that can validate automatic detection of AMD (retinal ageing). The Erasmus Trustfonds gave both Haarman and Thee €500,- to take part in the conference.

Renata Cura Machado wilde na haar bachelor in International Relations in Brazilië een master volgen, bij voorkeur aan de ESSB. Dankzij het Erasmus Trustfonds Scholarship kwam deze wens in vervulling. Met haar studie wil Renata kennis vergaren om door overheidsbeleid en duurzaam ondernemerschap sociale en economische ongelijkheid tegen te gaan.

Mariana Fried heeft het grootste deel van haar leven in Argentinië gewoond en kon in 2018 met financiële ondersteuning naar Nederland komen om te studeren aan de EUR. Met het Erasmus Trustfonds Scholarship kan Mariana haar volle focus leggen op haar studie aan de ESHCC.

After her bachelor’s degree International Relations in Brazil, Renata Cura Machado wanted to complete a master’s degree, preferably at the ESSB. The Erasmus Trustfonds Scholarship made it possible for her to realize this wish.

Using the knowledge attained during her studies, Renata aims to battle social and economic inequality through government policy and sustainable entrepreneurship.

Mariana Fried has spent most of her life in Argentina. In 2018, she was able to move to the Netherlands and study at the EUR. Thanks to financial support pro-

107 vided by the Erasmus Trustfonds Scholarship, she is now able to devote all her focus to her studies at the ESHCC. Muhamed Ghazi is following the financial economy program at the ESE, with the intention of working at an Indonesian investment bank once he has gotten his master’s degree. His goal is to improve his home country’s financial markets.

Chenzi Hu has wanted to study Supply Chain Management at the RSM for a long time, but her financial situation never allowed her to move from China to the Netherlands. The Erasmus Trustfonds Scholarship gave her the means to study at the EUR. Beksultan Kubenov is currently working towards his master’s degree in International Trade Law at the ESL. His interest for international trade law started growing when he worked for the biggest law firm in his homeland Kyrgyzstan.

Among other sources, the scholarships were funded by the Erasmus Charity Run. During the Rotterdam Marathon, staff and students of the EUR run a quarter marathon to collect funds for the Erasmus Trustfonds Scholarships. Additionally, there are a few generous foundations that contribute to the Erasmus Trustfonds Scholarship program, for which the students are very grateful.

Chenzi Hu koesterde al lang de wens Supply Chain Management te studeren aan de RSM, maar heeft door haar financiële situatie nooit de middelen gehad om vanuit China naar Nederland te komen. Het Erasmus Trustfonds Scholarship maakte het voor haar mogelijk om aan de EUR te komen studeren.

Beksultan Kubenov volgt de master International Trade Law aan de ESL. Zijn interesse voor internationaal handelsrecht komt uit de tijd dat Beksultan bij het grootste advocatenkantoor van zijn thuisland Kyrgyzstan werkte.

De scholarships worden onder andere gefinancierd door de Erasmus Charity Run. Tijdens de Marathon van Rotterdam lopen medewerkers en studenten van de EUR een kwart marathon om geld in te zamelen voor de Erasmus Trustfonds Scholarships. Daarnaast zijn er enkele genereuze stichtingen die bijdragen aan het Erasmus Trustfonds Scholarship programma, waarvoor de studenten hen zeer erkentelijk zijn.

De Erasmus Education Fund Scholarships HET ERASMUS EDUCATION FUND KENT BEURZEN TOE AAN EXCELLENTE STUDEN-

In 2019 zijn uit 60 aanmeldingen 12 scholarships van maximaal €3.000,aan internationale studenten toegekend. De studenten vertegenwoordigen een groot deel van de wereld, van Indonesië tot Roemenië. Zij zijn op grond van de volgende criteria geselecteerd: • Excellentie, op basis van cijferlijsten en diploma’s • Maatschappelijke betrokkenheid die blijkt uit extracurriculaire activiteiten • Motivatie, uiteengezet in hun motivatiebrief • Financiële noodzaak en de mate waarin de bijdrage van het Erasmus Education Fund het verschil maakt voor de student

Een bijzondere bursaal is Gertrude Yaka Tine uit Senegal die een scholarship ontving om een double degree te volgen aan de ESE en l’Ecole Nationale de la Statistique et de l’Analyse de l’Information (ENSAI) in Frankrijk. Zij zegt het volgende over haar beurs: “After two years of studying statistics and data analysis, I came to study at ESE to complete my formation with a M.sc in Quantitative Finance. My choice of ESE was mainly motivated by the fact that I wanted to access high quality education in econometrics and management science. MISHRE BEHOORDEN IN 2019 TOT DE STUDENTEN DIE KONDEN REKENEN OP DE ONDERSTEUNING VAN HET DE GOEDE GEIJT FONDS.

Nathalie Bale volgt de masteropleiding Geneeskunde. Door omstandigheden komt zij niet langer in aanmerking voor studiefinanciering. Hierdoor leek het er even op dat zij haar masteropleiding zou moeten onderbreken. Het De Goede Geijt Fonds gaf Nathalie een beurs waarmee zij haar studie kon voortzetten. Wij vroegen Nathalie naar haar studie-ervaring: “Van de co-schappen interne geneeskunde heb ik enorm genoten. Toen ik hoorde dat ik het De Goede Geijt Scholarship mocht ontvangen, was ik zo blij! Ik besefte dat ik me nu volledig op mijn studie kon richten. Afgelopen jaar heb ik hard gewerkt om te voldoen aan de hoge verwachtingen. Ook genoot ik van het contact met de patiënten en wist ik mijn co-schap chirurgie af te ronden.

Ik wil de beste dokter worden voor mijn patiënten. Ook heb ik mij gefocust op meer zelfvertrouwen wanneer ik patiënten behandel en wil ik mij meer verantwoordelijk voor hen voelen. Ik zie dit als persoonlijke groei.”

Andju Mishre studeert geneeskunde. In 2006 startte ze met haar bacheloropleiding. Ze behaalde helaas niet genoeg punten om haar studie voort te zetten, maar was vastberaden het opnieuw te proberen. Na succesvol haar master rechten te hebben afgerond aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, begon Andju opnieuw aan de bachelor Geneeskunde. Haar vasthoudendheid leverde haar succes op.

Omdat studenten slechts een beperkt aantal jaren gebruik kunnen maken van studiefinanciering, komt Andju hier echter niet langer voor in aanmerking. Daarom financiert ze sinds enkele jaren zelf haar studie met meerdere bijbanen. Het De Goede Geijt Fonds bood Andju een studiebeurs aan.  Nathalie Bale  Andju Mishre

”De Stichting L-EARN for Impact is zeer te spreken over het partnership met het Erasmus Trustfonds en de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam. De Stichting L-EARN for Impact, opgezet door de ontwikkelingsbank FMO, heeft tot doel studenten kennis te laten maken met het vak van bankieren in ontwikkelingslanden. Door oude afgeschreven projecten op te pakken met studenten van de Erasmus Universiteit worden inkomsten gegenereerd. Deze inkomsten worden gebruikt om beurzen toe te kennen aan talentvolle studenten uit ontwikkelingslanden, die zelf niet de middelen hebben om een studie te bekostigen. FMO levert de kennis van bankieren en toegang tot haar projecten, de Erasmus Universiteit levert de studenten om de projecten weer tot leven te brengen en het Erasmus Trustfonds zet haar netwerk en kennis in om buitenlandse studenten te selecteren en voor te bereiden op hun studie in Nederland. Zo maken we het gezamenlijk mogelijk om op verschillende niveaus blijvende impact te realiseren.”

Met dank aan de inzet van de (inmiddels oud) EUR-studenten Maria Alexandra Ignat, Amandine Muniken, Adam Marios Paschalidis en Rutger de Roo van Alderwerelt en hun begeleiders bij FMO, werden in 2019 de eerste twee L-EARN for Impact Scholarships uitgekeerd aan Sabina Laskar en Janelle Navarra.

Sabina Laskar zette zich in om de sociale misstanden in India weg te werken, in het bijzonder aangaande huisvrouwen. Zij werkte bij het Ghandi Fellowship dat zich richt op de ontwikkeling van het onderwijs in India.

Sabina heeft ook gewerkt aan ontwikkelingsprojecten die worden gesponsord door UNICEF. Nu wil zij graag meer kennis vergaren, om een bijdrage te leveren aan de ontwikkeling van India.

Janelle Navarra werkte als juridisch medewerkster bij de centrale bank van de Filipijnen waar zij zich onder andere inzette voor de groei van de Filipijnse economie. Om hier nog beter aan bij te dragen, is kennisverbreding van haar vakgebied erg belangrijk voor haar.

Sabina Laskar en Janelle Navarra willen beiden een masteropleiding voltooien aan de EUR. Sabina wil na haar masteropleiding aan het ISS een PhDonderzoek doen, om met de opgedane kennis een verschil te kunnen maken voor de rechten van vrouwen in India. Aan de ESL wil Janelle meer leren over de wisselwerking tussen rechten en de financiële wereld en hoe deze wisselwerking bijdraagt aan de duurzaamheid en groei van een economie.

Zij is benieuwd hoe bepaalde commerciële principes en concepten in landen zoals Nederland geïntegreerd zijn in de economie, in tegenstelling tot landen zoals de Filipijnen. Janelle wil deze kennis gebruiken in haar werk bij de centrale bank van de Filipijnen.

STORTTE DE AZERBEIDJAANSE ECONOMIE ECHTER IN. DE ECONOMISCHE CRISIS HAD EEN STERK NEGATIEVE IMPACT OP HET BEDRIJF VAN DE OUDERS VAN AYSEL. IN 2018 KONDEN DE OUDERS VAN AYSEL ZICH HAAR STUDIE NIET MEER VEROORLOVEN. HOEWEL AYSEL WERK NAAST HAAR STUDIE ZOCHT, MOCHT ZIJ ALS NON-EU STUDENT SLECHTS BEPERKT WERKEN. OOK WAS HET VOOR HAAR NIET MOGELIJK OM EEN LENING BIJ EEN BANK AF TE SLUITEN.

Gelukkig kreeg Aysel op het juiste moment een renteloze lening van het Erasmus Trustfonds aangeboden van €6.000,-. Met dat geld heeft ze haar bachelor voort kunnen zetten en is ze inmiddels afgestudeerd.

Emergency loan AYSEL JABRAYILOVA IS A STUDENT FROM AZERBAIJAN. SHE CAME TO THE NETHERLANDS TO STUDY ‘INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS BUSINESS’ IN 2016. HOWEVER, THE AZERBAIJAN ECONOMY COLLAPSED DURING HER STUDIES AT THE EUR, WHICH HAD A PROFOUNDLY NEGATIVE IMPACT ON AYSEL’S PARENTS’ COMPANY. THEY WERE NO LONGER ABLE TO AFFORD HER DEGREE IN 2018, AND EU REGULATIONS PREVENTED HER FROM WORKING MORE THAN A FEW HOURS A WEEK TO PAY FOR HER DEGREE. SHE WAS ALSO UNABLE TO TAKE OUT A LOAN.

Thankfully, the Erasmus Trustfonds was able to provide an interest-free loan of €6.000. This money enabled her to continue her studies until her graduation.

IN HAAR TWEEDE JAAR ONDERZOEKT AMY VERSCHILLEN IN GEDRAG VAN MUIZEN MET AUTISME EN DE ROL DIE HET CEREBRAAL HIERIN SPEELT. HAAR EERSTE JAAR HEEFT ZIJ AFGEROND MET EXCELLENTE CIJFERS (EEN GPA 8,6).

HET A.A. VAN BEEK FONDS ONDERSTEUNT STUDENTEN DIE ERVARING OP WILLEN

Het eerste jaar van haar studie in Rotterdam kon Amy verblijven in een appartement op de EUR-campus. Appartementen als deze zijn echter alleen beschikbaar voor eerstejaarsstudenten. Amy moest daarom op zoek naar een andere geschikte woonruimte.

Waar het voor de doorsnee student al erg lastig is om woonruimte te vinden in Rotterdam, was het voor Amy een extra uitdaging om geschikte accommodatie te vinden omdat ze door een medische conditie gebonden is aan een rolstoel. Toen deze ruimte eenmaal gevonden was, bleek het budget van Amy echter niet toereikend. Daarmee ontstond een obstakel om de studie af te ronden. Zowel het Erasmus Trustfonds als het Erasmus MC hebben een beurs beschikbaar gesteld om de extra kosten te financieren die aangepaste woonruimte met zich meebrengt.

Sanne Verheij, student aan de RSM, ging in 2019 op exchange naar de Kenan-Flagler Business School aan de University of North-Carolina. Deze universiteit specialiseert zich in Finance en Accounting. De uitwisseling bood Sanne de mogelijkheid om verschillende vakken op dit gebied te volgen die bij de RSM niet worden gegeven. Naast haar studie is Sanne een groot waterpolo fan. De University of North-Carolina heeft een van de grootste waterpoloverenigingen in de VS. Hiervan kon ze genieten tijdens haar uitwisseling.

Elwin Kardux, student aan de ESE, ging op exchange naar de Keio University in Tokio, Japan. Elwin wilde naar deze universiteit omdat het hem de beste combinatie bood van ervaring, reputatie en onderwijs. De vakken aan de

During her first year in Rotterdam, Amy stayed in an apartment on the EUR campus. These are, however, only available to first-year students, so Amy was forced to find another suitable place to live.

THE A.A. VAN BEEK FONDS SUPPORTS STUDENTS WHO WANT TO GAIN EXPERIENCE

Finding a place to live in Rotterdam is difficult enough for most students. Amy faced the extra challenge of being bound to a wheelchair due to a medical condition. When she found a place to live, her budget turned out to be inadequate, creating a barrier between her and her master’s degree. Both the Erasmus Trustfonds and the Erasmus MC have made scholarships available to cover the extra costs that resulted from living in an adjusted living environment.

In 2019, Sanne Verheij, student of the RSM, studied abroad at the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina, which is specialized in Finance and Accounting. The exchange enabled Sanne to enjoy different courses that are not taught at the RSM. Additionally, she was able to join the University of North Carolina water polo student club. A big fan of water polo, Sanne enjoyed her exchange to the fullest.

Keio University gaven Elwin de perfecte aansluiting op zijn eigen vakken aan de ESE. Ook wilde Elwin de Japanse taal beter leren kennen. De Keio University is een private universiteit en daarmee een van de meest competitieve universiteiten in Japan.

Roddy de Bruijne, student aan de ESHPM, ging op exchange naar Finland om te studeren aan de Universiteit van Kuopio. Roddy houdt erg van de Scandinavische cultuur en de ontspannen manier van leven daar. Naast het studeren aan de Universiteit van Kuopio, wilde Roddy ook Fins leren.

Jiyoung Jeon, student aan de RSM, liep stage in Los Angeles in de VS bij Taycor International. Doordat ze diverse taken mocht verrichten, deed Jiyoung veel ervaring op en leerde ze het bedrijf goed kennen. Ze begon met het invoeren van data en mocht later data analyseren en meewerken aan een accounting project, waarbij ze de winst- en verliesrekening mocht opstellen. Ze onderhield de sociale media van het bedrijf en hielp zelfs mee met het opstellen van protocollen voor nieuwe medewerkers. Met deze ervaring is Jiyoung erg blij. Ze heeft praktische kennis opgedaan en heeft een realistisch beeld gekregen van wat het inhoudt om te werken in de zakenwereld.

Elwin Kardux, student at the ESE, went on an exchange to Keio University in Tokyo, Japan. Elwin chose to go to this university because it combined outstanding education with experience and a good reputation. His courses at Keio University perfectly matched the courses Elwin had followed at the ESE. His time in Tokyo provided Elwin with an excellent opportunity to improve his Japanese language skills. Keio University is a private school, which makes it one of Japan’s most competitive schools.

Roddy de Bruijne, student at the ESHPM, studied at the University of Kuopio in Finland. Roddy is a big fan of Scandinavian culture, and the calm Finnish approach to life. Roddy also used his time in Kuopio to learn Finnish.

She had a varied set of responsibilities, so Jiyoung gained a lot of experience and became intimately familiar with the company. She started with data input, but moved on to data analysis and accounting, and drafted that year’s profit and loss account. coronale schedelnaad (kroonnaad) te vroeg dichtgroeit, waardoor kinderen faciale scoliose ontwikkelen. Boyd richtte zijn onderzoek in Toronto op de effecten van een chirurgische correctie bij deze afwijking. Naast zijn studie bezocht Boyd diverse sportevenementen.

Britt de Koning, student International Business and Communication aan de RSM, ging op uitwisseling naar de University of New South Wales in Australië. Britt volgde er twee media- en kunstvakken en twee marketingvakken. Het academisch niveau vond Britt vergelijkbaar met het onderwijs in Nederland, maar het aantal contacturen in Australië was minder. Naast haar studie genoot Britt van de Australische ‘hostel’ cultuur, zoals ze deze omschrijft. Het is erg eenvoudig om in Australië nieuwe mensen te ontmoeten tijdens het reizen. Het gevoel dat ze op zichzelf woonde aan de andere kant van de wereld gaf Britt een fantastisch gevoel.

In 1923 werd het A.A. van Beek Fonds opgericht ter nagedachtenis aan de heer A.A. van Beek. Nu enkele generaties later vertelt Maurits van Beek, alumnus van de RSM:

“Het Erasmus Trustfonds zet zich al meer dan 100 jaar in voor de groei en bloei van de Erasmus Universiteit. En niet zonder resultaat! De afgelopen drie jaar hebben laten zien dat alleen in Rotterdam er altijd nog een schepje bovenop kan, dankzij een gezonde dosis doorzettingsvermogen en door gebruik te maken van de talenten die voorhanden zijn. Precies die zaken, die ik vanuit mijn Rotterdamse (groot)ouders meekreeg toen ik ging studeren op de Erasmus Universiteit. Het is een eer om met die bagage in mijn rugzak nu iets terug te mogen doen voor de stad Rotterdam en in het bijzonder de Erasmus Universiteit.

De stad Rotterdam verdient een universiteit van wereldklasse die impact maakt op de wereld, op de maatschappij en op iedere individuele student die er studeert. Het Erasmus Trustfonds maakt dit mogelijk door de universiteit en haar studenten en medewerkers te ondersteunen. Dankzij de koppeling met de Erasmus Initiatives is die ondersteuning zeer gericht en is de impact sociaal en economisch groot. Het A.A. van Beek Fonds kan hierbij de rol spelen van een aanjager richting studenten: van oudsher, maar juist ook in de toekomst. Boyd van den Besselaar, student of the Erasmus MC, travelled to the University of Toronto in 2019 to complete his master’s research. He was studying children with unicoronal craniosynostosis, a condition in which the coronal sutures have fused together too soon. This can cause facial scoliosis. Boyd’s research in Toronto was focused on the effects of a surgical correction to combat this condition.

Boyd used his free time to visit major sporting events.

Britt de Koning, student International Business and Communication at the RSM. Studied at the University of New South Wales in Australia. She followed two classes on media and art, and two on marketing. The academic level was similar to her experience at the EUR, but Britt noticed that she enjoyed fewer hours of face-to-face teaching. Britt didn’t spend all her time studying, but also grew fond of what she calls the Australian ‘hostel’ culture: the ease with which travellers in Australia meet new people. Britt especially thoroughly enjoyed the feeling of living by herself on the other side of the world.

Professor H.W. Lambersprijs en de Prof. Bruinsprijs TIJDENS DE OPENING ACADEMISCH JAAR WERDEN TWEE PRIJZEN UITGEREIKT AAN TALENTVOLLE STUDENTEN.

Professor H.W. Lambersprijs In 2019 ging de Professor H.W. Lambersprijs naar Silvan Licher. Hij heeft in 2016 de master Geneeskunde afgerond. Tijdens zijn studie was hij onderdeel van de Honours Class 2010 van het Erasmus MC. Na het behalen van zijn master is hij begonnen met zijn promotietraject bij de afdeling Epidemiologie van het Erasmus MC. Tijdens de eerste periode van zijn promotietraject heeft Licher de masteropleiding Klinische Epidemiologie cum laude afgerond. De jury was onder de indruk van de extra activiteiten die hij tijdens zijn studie heeft ondernomen, waaronder de samenwerking met de afdeling Huisartsengeneeskunde voor studenten die hun kennis over de

basale geneeskunde willen verbreden. De prijs bestaat uit een geldsom van €3.500,- en een certificaat, gefinancierd vanuit het ARK-Fonds, een fonds op naam bij het Erasmus Trustfonds.

Prof. Bruinsprijs De Prof. Bruinsprijs is toegekend aan student Maeve van den Aakster. Zij doet een onderzoeksmaster Infection & Immunity. Ze focust zich op infectieziekten en de overdracht van deze virussen tussen dieren en mensen, specifiek op het vogelgriepvirus. Het doel van haar werk is om te begrijpen welke wilde vogels geïnfecteerd raken met het vogelgriepvirus en de vraag te beantwoorden of vogels de ziekte kunnen overdragen op kippen of mensen. Deze ‘one health approach’ maakt een betere voorspelling van uitbraken mogelijk en helpt een epidemie te voorkomen en tijdig interventies te organiseren. Met haar werk wist zij voldoende indruk te maken op de jury om de prijs te winnen. De prijs bestaat uit een certificaat en een geldsom van €4.500,-.

The Professor H.W. Lambersprijs and the Prof. Bruinsprijs TWO PRIZES WERE AWARDED TO TALENTED STUDENTS DURING THE OPENING OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR.

Professor H.W. Lambersprijs Silvan Licher won the Professor H.W. Lambersprijs in 2019. In 2016, he completed his master’s degree in medicine. He was part of the Erasmus MC Honours Class of 2010. After obtaining his master, he started a PhD at the department of Epidemiology of the Erasmus MC. During the first phase of his PhD program, Licher graduated with honours from the master’s degree Clinical Epidemiology.

The jury was very impressed with his extracurricular activities, which included a

collaboration with the Department of General Medicine for students who wanted to expand their knowledge of basic medicine. The prize consisted of €3.500 and a certificate. It is financed by the ARK-Fonds, a named fund within the Erasmus Trustfonds.

Prof. Bruinsprijs Maeve van den Aakster won the Prof. Bruinsprijs. She is currently doing a research master in Infection & Immunity, focusing on infectious diseases and the transmission of these diseases between animals and humans. Her focus is on the bird flu virus. Her goal is to understand which wild birds are affected by the bird flu virus, and to answer the question whether they can spread the virus to chickens or people. This ‘one health approach’ can improve predictions of new outbreaks, and can help organise timely interventions to prevent a pandemic. Her work greatly impressed the jury, who awarded her with a certificate and a prize sum of €4.500.

Sociale activiteiten zorgen er bovendien voor dat de studietijd een plezierige tijd is met een goede balans tussen studie en ontspanning en waarin netwerken worden gebouwd voor de toekomst. Het Erasmus Trustfonds ondersteunt initiatieven van studenten. Het richt zich daarbij op door de EUR erkende studie- en studentenverenigingen.

STUDEREN BETEKENT MEER DAN EEN DIPLOMA HALEN. HET IS NET ZO BELANGRIJK OM CULTURELE, POLITIEKE, SPORTIEVE EN SOCIALE INTERESSES EN VAARDIGHEDEN TE ONTPLOOIEN. OP DE EUR IS DIT MOGELIJK DOOR HET RUIME AANBOD VAN STUDENTENORGANISATIES, WAARONDER STUDIE- EN STUDENTENVERENIGINGEN.

Zo beschikken de faculteiten elk over een studievereniging. Deze verenigingen zetten zich in om theorie en praktijk meer met elkaar te verbinden. Zij doen dit door activiteiten zoals lezingen en carrièrebeurzen te organiseren voor studenten die interesse hebben in het desbetreffende vakgebied.

Naast deze verenigingen zijn er studieverenigingen die zich richten op een specifiek vakgebied, maar niet verbonden zijn aan een specifieke faculteit.

Het aanbod van deze organisaties varieert van mode en kunst tot aan beleggen en draagt zo bij aan de wereld- en marktoriëntatie van studenten.

Er zijn ook de studentenverenigingen die zich bezighouden met sociale activiteiten. Alle verenigingen hebben hun eigen kenmerken, activiteitenaanbod en cultuur.

Student life STUDYING IS ABOUT MORE THAN GETTING YOUR DEGREE. IT’S JUST AS IMPORTANT TO DEVELOP YOUR CULTURAL, POLITICAL, PHYSICAL, AND SOCIAL INTERESTS AND CAPABILITIES. THE EUR MAKES THIS POSSIBLE WITH A LARGE NUMBER OF STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS, INCLUDING STUDENT AND STUDY ASSOCIATIONS.

Every faculty has its own study association, which works to connect its students both academically and socially. They do so by organising lectures and career fares for students. Each specific area of expertise also has its own study association, which is not connected to a specific faculty. The wide range of organisations varies from fashion and art to investment banking, and in that way helps students orient themselves in the world at large.

Studiereis Cedo Nulli naar Warschau en deelname NMUN

Faculteit: ESSB €2.750,-

Voordat de Cedo Nulli delegatie naar New York afreisde, werden de studenten zes maanden lang getraind door twee oud-VN-afgevaardigden. Daarnaast werden zij voorbereid door middel van lezingen door gastsprekers en verschillende teambuilding-activiteiten. Dit zorgde voor een enorme groei in de praktische vaardigheden van de deelnemers, zoals openbaar spreken, onderhandelen en resoluties schrijven. Daarnaast leerden zij veel over internationale diplomatie. Het harde werk door de leden van Cedo Nulli werd beloond met prijzen voor hun optredens tijdens de NMUN. De gastsprekers, trainers en de conferentie zelf hebben veel deelnemers geïnspireerd voor hun toekomstige carrière.

Naast de studiereis naar Warschau nam een delegatie van Cedo Nulli deel aan het ‘National Model United Nations’ (NMUN). Dit is de grootste simulatie van de Verenigde Naties (VN) ter wereld. De simulatie vindt plaats in New York, waar elk jaar meer dan 5.000 studenten van over de hele wereld samen komen om in groepjes de VN-lidstaten te vertegenwoordigen.

Studytrip Cedo Nulli and NMUN CEDO NULLI IS THE STUDY ASSOCIATION OF THE ESSB. IN 2019, THEY ORGANISED A TRIP TO WARSAW FOR 50 STUDENTS. THE TRIP WAS DEDICATED TO CULTURAL ACTIVITIES AS WELL AS ACTIVITIES RELATED TO THE STUDENTS’ DEGREES. AMONG OTHERS, THEY VISITED THE EMBASSY, THE UNIVERSITY OF WARSAW, AND THE POLISH RED CROSS. TO GET TO KNOW THE CITY BETTER, THE STUDENTS TOURED THE CITY, FOLLOWED A COURSE TO LEARN POLISH, AND VISITED A CHOPIN PIANO CONCERT.

A delegation of Cedo Nulli also participated in the National Model United Nations (NMUN). This is the biggest simulation of the United Nations in the world. The simulation takes place in New York. Every year more than 5.000 students from across the globe come together to represent different UN member states.

The members of the Cedo Nulli delegation spent six months in training under the supervision of former UN delegates. They were also prepared with guest courses and different team building exercises. This helped the participants greatly improve their practical skills, such as public speaking, negotiating, and writing resolutions. They also learnt a lot about international diplomacy. The hard work of the members of Cedo Nulli was recognised with the awards they earned at NMUN. The guest speakers, trainers, and the conference itself have inspired many participants with regard to their future career.

In het verleden heeft een aantal presidenten, premiers, leden van het Koninklijk Huis en belangrijke figuren uit het bedrijfsleven op het podium gestaan. In 2019 waren dit onder meer Neelie Kroes, Constantijn van Oranje en Kim Putters.

Drie medewerkers aan de ESPhil en 38 studenten gingen naar deze twee na grootste stad van Griekenland. De reiscommissie organiseerde in Thessaloniki activiteiten met uiteenlopende thema’s, van Aristoteliaanse logica tot sporen van filosofie in Homerus. Ook werd de Olympus bezocht, volgens de Griekse mythologie de woonplaats van de goden.

Het Erasmus Trustfonds steunde in 2019 de Eurekaweek Commissie die bestaat uit studenten die vanuit de EUR deze introductieweek organiseren.

Daarnaast ontving ook een aantal studentenverenigingen financiële ondersteuning voor de activiteiten die zij tijdens de Eurekaweek organiseerden om nieuwe studenten welkom te heten in Rotterdam. Zo ontvingen onder andere het Rotterdamsch Studenten Gezelschap, Rotterdamsch Studenten Corps/Rotterdamsche Vrouwelijke Studenten Vereeniging, Navigators Studentenvereniging Rotterdam en het Societas Studiosorum Reformatorum Roterodamensis een bijdrage. De studentenverenigingen gebruikten het geld voor het organiseren van feesten, andere sociale activiteiten en het promoten van de studentenvereniging zelf.

De studiereis ging in 2019 naar de Chinese steden Shanghai, Suzhou en Chengdu. Tijdens de reis bezochten de deelnemers lokale universiteiten, cultureel interessante bezienswaardigheden en bedrijven, waaronder Nederlandse multinationals.

De bijdrage van het Erasmus Trustfonds stelt Studium Generale in staat bijzondere culturele activiteiten te organiseren. Zo was er in het academisch jaar 2019/2020 de theatervoorstelling Woke door STET (Stichting The English Theatre) over het verhaal van twee vrouwen die vechten voor gelijke rechten. De documentaire Three Identical Strangers werd vertoond, over de hereniging van een drieling die omwille van een psychologisch experimenteel onderzoek als baby van elkaar is gescheiden. Na de film was er een nagesprek over ethiek en psychologie. Pianist Jeroen van Veen gaf tweemaal een volledig uitverkocht ligconcert. Terwijl het publiek op matjes op de grond lag te luisteren, speelde hij werken van Einaudi.

EVERY YEAR, STUDIUM GENERALE ORGANISES SCIENTIFIC, SOCIAL, AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF OF THE EUR, AS WELL AS OTHER PEOPLE WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED. THE PROGRAM CONSISTS OF LECTURES, DEBATES, TALK SHOWS, WORKSHOPS, COURSES, AND PERFORMANCES.

Thanks to the contribution of the Erasmus Trustfonds, Studium Generale is able to organise unique cultural activities. In the academic year 2019/2020, for example, Stichting The English Theatre performed the play Woke, a story of two woman fighting for equal rights. Studium Generale also played the documentary Three Identical Strangers, about the reunification of identical triplets who were separated at birth for a psychological experiment. After the movie, the audience engaged in a lively discussion on ethics and psychology. Furthermore, pianist Jeroen van Veen gave two piano concerts where the audience was lying down.

His beautiful recital of works by Einaudi was sold out both times.

Verzet van Rotterdamse studenten in de Tweede Wereldoorlog

Het wetenschappelijk onderzoek startte eind 2017 en wordt verricht door dr. Merel Leeman. Ook de eerste fondsenwerving om het onderzoek te bekostigen startte in dat jaar, onder leiding van het Erasmus Trustfonds. Voor de werving en de uitkering van de gelden richtte de Stichting Rotterdams Studentenverzet een bestemmingsfonds op bij het Erasmus Trustfonds. De EUR, vele oud-leden verenigingen, betrokken fondsen en particulieren hebben inmiddels aan het onderzoek bijgedragen. Ook kan het project rekenen op financiële ondersteuning vanuit de ongeoormerkte middelen van het Erasmus Trustfonds.

DE STUDENTENVERENIGINGEN, DIE AL BESTONDEN TIJDENS HET BEGIN VAN DE TWEEDE WERELDOORLOG, ZIJN TIJDENS DE STUDIES NAAR HUN EIGEN HISTORIE GESTUIT OP UNIEKE GEBEURTENISSEN TIJDENS DIE OORLOG.

Dat heeft geleid tot een bundeling van kennis en krachten, om zo tot een breed wetenschappelijk onderzoek te komen naar het verzet van studenten uit Rotterdam en hierover een boek te presenteren voor een grote groep geïnteresseerden. De Stichting Rotterdams Studentenverzet heeft de eigen activiteiten ondergebracht in een gelijknamig bestemmingsfonds bij het Erasmus Trustfonds.

Drs. Govert Trouwborst, penningmeester van de Stichting Rotterdams Studentenverzet, over het project: “De kennis over wat studenten uit Rotterdam deden tijdens de WO II was tot voor kort fragmentarisch opgeslagen binnen de oude studentenverenigingen.

Daarom is de bundeling van kennis die de Stichting Rotterdams Studenten Verzet beoogde zo belangrijk. Nu konden 75 jaar na de bevrijding oude bronnen worden ontsloten en nieuwe bronnen worden aangeboord en wordt alles in samenhang op schrift gesteld. Zo kan nu ook de nieuwe generatie studenten kennis nemen van het oorlogsverleden van hun voorgangers. Wij zijn dankbaar dat de EUR, het Erasmus Trustfonds en vele volgende geldgevers dit doel hebben omarmd!“

Resistance of Rotterdam students during the Second World War THE STICHTING ROTTERDAMS STUDENTENVERZET (ROTTERDAM STUDENT RESISTANCE ASSOCIATION) HAS STARTED A SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION INTO THE RESISTANCE, DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR, OF STUDENTS AT WHAT WAS THEN THE NEDERLANDSE ECONOMISCHE HOGESCHOOL (DUTCH SCHOOL FOR HIGHER ECONOMIC EDUCATION). THE STUDENT ASSOCIATIONS, WHICH ALREADY EXISTED WHEN THE WAR STARTED, ENCOUNTERED DOCUMENTATION OF UNIQUE EVENTS WHEN STUDYING THEIR OWN HISTORY.

Dr. Merel Leeman started with the research in late 2017. The first fundraising started in the same year, with the Erasmus Trustfonds at the helm. The research gathered lots of support from the EUR, former members of student associations, funds, and other interested individuals. The Erasmus Trustfonds also provides support with some of its unearmarked funds.

Drs. Govert Trouwborst, treasurer of the Stichting Rotterdams Studentenverzet, discusses the project: “The knowledge on Rotterdam student resistance during WW II was, until recently, fragmented across the various student associations. That’s why it’s so important that the available information is bundled together, as intended by the Stichting Rotterdams Studentenverzet. 75 years after the liberation, old sources have been collected and new sources tapped into, and everything is comprehensively written down. This enables a new generation of students to learn about the history of their predecessors during the war. We are grateful that the EUR, the Erasmus Trustfonds, and many other donators have embraced our goal!”

Voor de loopbaan van academici kan een benoeming tot bijzonder hoogleraar een belangrijke stap zijn in de richting van gewoon hoogleraar. Zo ook voor prof.dr. Thea Hillhorst. Van 2013 tot en met 2019 was zij bijzonder hoogleraar vanwege het Erasmus Trustfonds. Over deze periode schrijft ze:

“Toen ik in 2013 de wens ontwikkelde om mijn loopbaan op een andere universiteit voort te zetten, het liefst bij het ISS, werd mij al snel duidelijk dat dit nog niet zo gemakkelijk is. Zelfs toen ik de prestigieuze VICI-beurs van NWO had gekregen, stonden diverse deuren wel open maar bleken er toch veel bureaucratische drempels te zijn. Het was fantastisch dat het binnen de EUR en via het Erasmus Trustfonds wel mogelijk was om mij te benoemen tot hoogleraar.

Ik ben daar nog iedere dag dankbaar voor. Ik voel mij goed thuis op het ISS en heb binnen mijn nieuwe positie niet alleen de onderzoeksplannen van mijn VICI-beurs uitgevoerd, maar ook verschillende nieuwe onderzoeksprogramma’s geïnitieerd en hier financiering voor gerealiseerd.”

Inmiddels is prof.dr. Thea Hillhorst benoemd tot gewoon hoogleraar aan het ISS. Hiernaast is de verdeling van de via het Erasmus Trustfonds benoemde leerstoelen naar faculteit weergegeven. Verschillen tussen faculteiten ontstaan door hun verschillende omvang. Het onderscheid tussen het Erasmus MC en de andere faculteiten wordt verder vergroot doordat binnen het Erasmus MC bijzondere leerstoelen worden toegewezen in het kader van personeelsbeleid. Bij de overige faculteiten is dit type leerstoel in de loop van 2019 afgeschaft en omgezet naar gewone leerstoelen.

Vanuit de taken van het Erasmus Trustfonds als vermogensfonds is het aangesloten bij de Vereniging van Fondsen in Nederland (FIN). Het bestuur en de raad van toezicht hanteren de gedragscode die is opgesteld door de FIN. Tevens anticipeert het Erasmus Trustfonds als fondsenwervende instelling op de code van fondsenwervende instellingen. Daarnaast toetst het Erasmus Trustfonds het eigen beleid en werkwijzen aan de Code Goed Bestuur van de Samenwerkende Brancheorganisatie Filantropie en de Erkenningsregeling Goede Doelen van het CBF. Voor wat betreft het vaststellen van salarissen wordt de Regeling Beloning Directeuren van Goede Doelen en het Functieboek voor de goededoelensector aangehouden.

De raad van toezicht van het Erasmus Trustfonds ziet toe op de besturing van het fonds en heeft een stimulerende en adviserende rol. De leden zijn geselecteerd op hun relevante expertise, worden benoemd voor een periode van drie jaar en kunnen tweemaal worden herbenoemd.

Bestuur / Board Het bestuur van het Erasmus Trustfonds zet het beleid op hoofdlijnen uit en ziet toe op de uitvoering hiervan. De leden zijn geselecteerd op hun relevante expertise, worden benoemd voor een periode van drie jaar en kunnen tweemaal worden herbenoemd.

Adviesorganen Naast de raad van toezicht en het bestuur kent het Erasmus Trustfonds drie adviesorganen: de Investment committee, de Disbursement committee en de Development board. De Investment committee adviseert het bestuur ten aanzien van het te volgen beleggingsbeleid. De Disbursement committee voorziet het bestuur van advies over het toekenningsbeleid en de beoordeling van onderzoeksaanvragen. De Development board geeft raad aan het bestuur aangaande fondsenwerving. Binnen het bestuur is er voor elk van deze adviesorganen een bestuurslid dat verantwoordelijk is voor het desbetreffende gebied en als eerste aanspreekpunt fungeert voor het adviesorgaan.

Begrippenlijst Stamvermogen Het stamvermogen is het vermogen in het beheer van het Erasmus Trustfonds dat als zodanig is aangemerkt door de gever. In principe wordt alleen het gemiddelde rendement, over meerdere jaren gezien, over het stamvermogen uitgekeerd. Dankzij het stamvermogen van het Erasmus Trustfonds is ondersteuning van de EUR op de lange termijn gewaarborgd.

Ongeoormerkte middelen Ongeoormerkte middelen zijn middelen beschikbaar voor de algemene doelstelling van het Erasmus Trustfonds om de groei en bloei van de EUR te bevorderen. Deze middelen stellen het Erasmus Trustfonds in staat om te reageren op de op dat moment aanwezige behoefte van de EUR.

Geoormerkte middelen Geoormerkte middelen zijn middelen beschikbaar voor een specifiek subdoel binnen de algemene doelstelling van het Erasmus Trustfonds. De geoormerkte middelen kunnen bijvoorbeeld een specifieke doelgroep beogen, zoals de ondersteuning van studenten of een faculteit, of gericht zijn op een thema, zoals ondernemerschap of duurzaamheid.

Garantie Een garantie is een bijdrage aan een project of activiteit onder een bepaalde voorwaarde. Zo kan de voorwaarde zijn dat de garantie slechts wordt uitgekeerd voor zover het beschikbaar gestelde bedrag nodig is om een eventueel tekort op de werkelijke uitgaven te dekken, nadat alle andere inkomstenbronnen zijn uitgewonnen. Ook kan het zijn dat een garantie slechts wordt uitgekeerd wanneer een bijdrage vanuit een andere financier is veiliggesteld.

Subsidie Een subsidie is een van tevoren vastgestelde bijdrage aan een project of activiteit.

Noodlening Een noodlening wordt verstrekt aan studenten in uiterste financiële nood.

Zonder ondersteuning van het Erasmus Trustfonds zijn deze studenten niet in staat hun studie af te ronden. De leningen worden slechts verstrekt na voordracht van een studentendecaan. Noodleningen zijn rentevrij en studenten worden geacht deze terug te betalen vanaf het moment dat zij hun diploma behalen.

Aanvraagcategorieën Studentondersteuning Gehele of gedeeltelijke studiebeurzen voor bachelor- en masterstudenten aan de EUR. Studentenleven Ondersteuning van studie- en studentenverenigingen en overige activiteiten die bijdragen aan het studentenleven en -welzijn.

Congresbezoek Deelname aan (internationale) congressen door promovendi, bijvoorbeeld door de presentatie van artikelen of onderzoeksposters. Per 1 januari 2020 worden congresbezoeken in principe niet langer ondersteund door het Erasmus Trustfonds.

Onderzoeksreis Bezoek aan een buitenlandse universiteit door de academische staf van de EUR. Onderzoeks- & onderwijsprojecten Projecten op het gebied van onderzoek en onderwijs door de academische staf van de EUR. Prijzen Prijzen voor studenten, onderzoekers en onderwijzers.

Overige activiteiten Restcategorie, waarin zaken vallen die niet zijn onder te brengen in de overige categorieën. Te denken valt aan het organiseren van congressen en andere evenementen of aan specifieke activiteiten die aansluiten bij de doelstelling van een fonds op naam.
