school year has blossomed into a schoolwide mentoring program this year.

Mathews High School counselor Julie Berkhouse developed Mustangs Matter. It’s a program that’s aimed at helping students make the transition between school buildings and grade levels, as well as build relationships.

Last school year, the pilot program paired students in

number of icebreaker and team building activities. This past October, Berkhouse broadened the program to include all of the high school.

Students at Mathews High School were greeted by a new face when they returned from winter break. Michelle Hinegarnder has been hired by the district to teach seventh and eighth grade math.

Hinegarnder comes to Mathews High School from Bedford City Schools, where she taught seventh and eighth

grade

mathematics.

She

also

led

the

mathematics department of 15 educators. In addition to her time at Bedford City Schools, Hinegarnder spent 13 years as an adjunct professor at Notre Dame College.

During her tenure, Hinegarnder has received multiple grants and awards including the Bedford City Schools Foundation Grant, First Energy STEM Grant, Heskett Middle School Teacher of the Year, PTSA Teacher of the Year and Heskett Middle School Helping Hand Award winner.

They have five children and one grandchild.

At the beginning of the second semester, students will experience additional staff changes.

In an effort to increase counseling time with students, Mathews Local Schools has created an additional counselor position, bringing the total to three.

Samantha Hintemeyer will

move from Mathews High School to Currie and Baker Elementary Schools as the new, K-4 school counselor. In her new role, she will be focusing on social and emotional learning.

Rhonda Hilliard will continue to work at Baker Elementary School with the district's fifth and sixth grade student.

She will also now be providing school counseling services to our

seventh and eighth grade students. This move will assist students as they transition from elementary school to junior high.

Julie Berkhouse will remain at Mathews High School,

where she will assist with seventh and eighth grade scheduling. Her main focus at the high school will be working with students in grades 9-12.

Once a month, seniors meet with freshmen, students in eleventh grade mentor seventh graders, and students in tenth grade partner with eighth grade students. They answer questions to get to know one another better. They participate in different competitions to build community and they work together to solve puzzles and complete scavenger hunts.

“Prior to having this program, our junior high and high school students didn’t often cross paths. Since we launched Mustangs Matter in October, we’ve noticed more interaction between grade levels.

It has been really fun to watch. In some of the activities, we’ve

watched as students, who are normally shy, emerge as leaders and lead conversations among their mentor groups. That’s the goal of this,” said Berkhouse.

Teacher Kevin Haynie leads a mentoring session with student in the gymnasium, which included a dance competition. In December, students also worked together to solve holiday trivia.

NEW THIS SCHOOL YEAR: On Fridays, teacher Julie Ring and students in the Friends of Rachel Club hand out bags of popcorn to students who demonstrate positive behaviors at school.

Mrs. Lamberto’s fourth grade classes have been learning about landforms and Ohio’s natural resources. Students used this knowledge to construct winter wonderland scenes that included landforms, human characteristics and physical characteristics.

MUSTANGS OF THE MONTH During the month of December, students at Currie focused on the character trait caring. Teachers talked with their students about what it means to be caring and nominated students from their classes who demonstrated these traits. Congratulations to all of our caring Mustangs!
