BRODY JEWISH CENTER 2021-2022

AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

Our Mission
To empower Jewish students at the University of Virginia to take ownership of their Jewish identities and make an enduring commitment to Judaism and the Jewish people.
Our Values
The following pillars below illustrate the overarching goals of our work and give us a blueprint for successfully delivering on our mission for our students.
Learning Belonging
Learning is about students' rigorous engagement with Jewish history, texts, and ideas, development an informed Jewish identity, and finding their place within the larger Jewish peopelehood and narrative.

Belonging is about students feeling truly at home in the Jewish community, where they can be their authentic selves, learn to balance their personal needs with the needs of a community, and feel comfortable exploring new ideas and practices

Growth Pluralism
Growth is about empowerment and leadership development, becoming active Jewish adults, and providing support to students during this crucial time of identity formation
Pluralism means valuing multiple expressions of Jewish identity and creating a unified community that honors the diversity of experience, belief, and backgrounds of its members. It also means learning how to disagree constructively.

Scott Rosen
On behalf of our Board of Directors, please accept my thanks for your contributions and support for our mission and programming As we emerge from what we will hopefully look back on as the peak of the pandemic, our focus is foremost on the health and success of our students and our staff, under the enduring stewardship of our talented Executive Director, Rabbi Jake Rubin. I am impressed by the innovative programming initiatives and outcomes that we achieved during these uncertain times. For our students, this year meant a more normal return to distinct experiences like Bagels on the Lawn, celebrating Shabbat Dinners with a hundred or more eager students under one roof, and the opportunity to travel together and immerse themselves in everything Israel on Birthright Israel Those efforts enabled our team to engage more than 700 Jewish students, which continues to place the BJC in the upper echelon of Hillel’s nationally.

I am privileged to serve as Chair of the Board of Directors, and thanks in part to the leadership of my predecessor, Fed Cohen, I inherit a strong organizational foundation that has positioned the Board to focus more energy on strategic planning and sustainability One of those opportunities in 2022 was Board Development and Engagement Our Board of Directors generously volunteer their time, resources and talents We have created Board Sub-committees to enable each of them to support the staff in a more targeted, personalized way. These committees include: 1) Programming and Staff, 2) Development and 3) Board Governance and Recruitment. We hope this approach provides Rabbi Jake and our staff with additional resources to help scale their own time and impact across these disciplines
We can’t speak about sustainability and not address development This year was another year of milestones as we raised more than $600,000 overall including nearly $400,000 in individual contributions, representing a 26% increase over the prior fiscal year. Thank you to all our benefactors for your generous support. We could not do this work without you.
As we enter another academic year, I am looking forward to the opportunity to continue to serve our community and partner with our talented staff and students.
With gratitude for your support, Scott

This past year, I celebrated my bar-mitzvah year as the executive director of the Brody Jewish Center (BJC). As with any b’nai mitzvah, to get to this moment took a tremendous amount of work and growth. It was certainly an accomplishment but also a cause for reflection. As I think about those thirteen years, it is hard not to remember those first few years when we could only dream about the reality we find ourselves in today.
The last decade has been marked by the exponential growth of Hillel at the University of Virginia Whether through students engaged, physical space, size of budget and staff, or the vibrancy of UVA’s Jewish community, the Brody Jewish Center has grown to become a fixture on Grounds. Today the BJC is the central address for Jewish life at UVA, engaging over 70 percent of Jewish students on Grounds last year.
One thing that has become abundantly clear over this period of time is that there is no such thing as a “normal” year Every year requires us to be nimble and adapt to our students’ needs and interests This has necessitated that we think critically about how our staff operates on a day-to-day basis as well as how we develop student leaders. Over the years our leadership structure and leadership development opportunities have become more sophisticated and in-depth to respond to our constantly changing world.
While our methods may evolve and our programming may look different from year to year, what has stayed constant is our commitment to student empowerment and self-governance Each year we work in collaboration with students to create and sustain Jewish life on Grounds. It is through true partnership with our student leaders that we not only ensure that we remain relevant by directly responding to students’ needs, but it also allows us to empower them to become informed, strategic Jewish leaders. University of Virginia students are bright, talented individuals who will go on to be leaders in their professions and communities. Through the work that we do, we empower the Jewish future
As always, I want to thank you. Your generosity enables us to do this incredibly important work and allows us to continue to excel and grow to meet the needs of Jewish students at UVA. Together, with your support, we are creating a vibrant Jewish future for us all. I hope you enjoy reading about our amazing students and the wonderful work they are doing on Grounds.
With Gratitude,

Meet Second Year Ben Alberstein
Even though his sister was a forme
UVA, Class of 2023 student Ben Alberstein’s initial interaction with Hillel at UVA was essentially an accident, but his growth in our community wasn’t.

“I walked out of a class called Literature of Middle Eastern Jews. It’s probably part of the reason I thought you [Bagels on the Lawn] were a Jewish group. Judaism was on my mind. I was in that class with another student named David Bass. I remember I talked with [Springboard Innovation Fellow] Annie for a few minutes and then stuck around when I found out I could take more than one bagel. [BOTL] was really where my personality came through the first time in college. I felt like myself.”
Ben’s connection to Hillel at UVA, and his sense of belonging in the Jewish community at UVA, has continued to grow throughout the years, and while Bagels on the Lawn was and is a centerpiece in his Jewish experiences, his connection to the Jewish community here grew when he went to Israel through Birthright Israel in May 2022:
“The way I was on Birthright was my truest self, and I’m honestly not like that in most situations at UVA. I made more friends on Birthright in a shorter period of time than I probably did in the rest of college. I think there’s something about being in Israel and with Jewish people that really lets you put down barriers and walls and by the time you ’ re a few days in, you really start to know and understand other people and grow in some ways. You don’t feel the need to hold back and can just be unapologetically yourself for 10 days straight.”
Fall 2022 is Ben’s last semester as an undergraduate at UVA, and his Bagels on the Lawn journey is coming full circle. David Bass, the same student who he stumbled upon BOTL with 3 years ago, now hosts the event in his own Lawn Room.

Student Leadership Cohorts
Student leaders are integral to everything we do at Hillel. Our leaders and interns focus on peer-to-peer engagement, building relationships, developing programs, and strengthening our community. Our student leaders meet weekly with staff for leadership development, Jewish learning, and to talk about the latest around Grounds.

Hoo Knew Learning Series
The Brody Jewish Center is committed to helping students increase their Jewish knowledge and connection to Jewish values and practice. seminars during the year covered a range of wish values and relationships, theology and cooking, and leadership development ship with the Lipson family, Hillel created a perience to openly talk about mental health at d remove the stigma from asking for help. The ncluded Shabbat dinner where students heard rent resources around Grounds, conversations dents' own mental health, and training in s meditation.

Glasser Hillel Jewish Leadership Institute

HJLI, now in its second year, seeks to provide leadership development training to a cohort of first year students Over the course of 8 weeks, first years meet with staff and student leaders to learn the ins and outs of the Jewish community at UVA and leadership skills The program culminates with first years pitching ideas for new programs and each of these programs was implemented by the students who proposed them.
Birthright & Onward Israel
After being put on pause due to COVID, our students had the opportunity to travel to Israel through Birthright and Onward. A full bus of students traveled to Israel in May for 10 days of learning and exploring. With stipends from the BJC, 18 students spent the summer working for companies across Israel as a part of the Onward internship program.

Meet Alumna Zoe Sadugor

Growth byAlumni
For Zoe Sadugor (‘20), the Brody Jewish Center is inextricably linked to the growth she made with her Jewish identity during college.
“When I look back at my college career, the BJC is at the forefront of my personal, professional, and Jewish growth. During my first year, I realized if I wanted to find people with similar values to me, it wasn’t going to happen naturally and I needed to seek it out. [In the BJC community] I instantly found people who were similar to me. By embracing my values, I was growing into my real identity. The BJC was integral for me in realizing being instrumental Judaism is in my life and being part of the Jewish community was important to me Rabbi Jake, during the High Holidays, showed me what a genuine Jewish mosaic looks like. I never felt that my beliefs and feelings and perspective could show up in Judaism. The way he spoke about things, I finally felt at home and seen in my Judaism.”

Zoe’s growth as a Jewish young adult expanded beyond college. After graduation, she began her career as a Jewish professional at University of Delaware Hillel as their Springboard Innovation Fellow, and now works for the Joint Distribution Committee for the Entwine program.
“The whole time I was working at UD Hillel, I kept thinking my younger self would be shocked. I never saw myself in the Jewish working world. I think first year Zoe, if she saw me now, would be over the moon thrilled. I combine everything I love that I thought were genuinely impossible to combine in a job. I am going to Rwanda for my job in October through the JDC. Younger Zoe would be intrigued that she could be doing that through a Jewish opportunity The BJC was huge in getting me here. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn't for [Associate Director] Paige. She was my person when I was searching for jobs and she really helped me figure out where I could use my strengths and fulfill personal needs, which led me to Hillel. Through Paige and my other life and Hillel mentor Hillary Jampel, I was able to find the JDC job I’m in now ”
Zoe recently moved to Denver and says she’s excited to start building her own Jewish rituals now as a young adult, inspired by the Jewish values and identity she grew d UVA.

Growth by the Staff
Annie Weinberg
When thinking about growth by our staff, Annie Weinberg ' s personal and professional journey tells a story of what the BJC is all about. After four years as a student, moving from a participant, to a student leader, to a paid intern at the BJC, Annie accepted a job as a Development Associate in 2019 And after a year in that role, she began a student-facing role, joining the Springboard Fellowship Program for two years. Annie attributes this professional growth as well as her personal growth to the human-first, trusting organizational culture that makes working at the BJC so meaningful and rewarding
"There is so much trust and autonomy given to the staff. As an early-career professional, I am given permission to try new things and see how they land There is an understanding that we ’ re allowed to grow at the BJC by trying new things or taking on new responsibilities. I also struck gold as a 22-year-old with two powerful, wonderful women mentoring me- [staff members] Danielle and Paige. To come into an entry level position and have supervisors give me the perfect balance of autonomy, support, and mentorship, while also treating me as a human being has been truly amazing. I look at the programs and initiatives I've had a hand in, like Hillel Jewish Leadership Institute (HJLI), Camp WaJew, Kvetch & Kvell, and our social media presence, and I just know that I wouldn't have had the confidence or know-how to build those without a staff that invested in my growth "
At the end of this year, Annie accepted a new role as Director of Jewish Student Life, entering into her fourth year as a professional at the BJC, and eighth year in our community overall

"The BJC has been part of my life as I've grown through so many life milestones- personally and professionally From being 18 to approaching 26 years old, I have always felt like people here believed in me; staff, students, board members, parents, and donors. I don't know how someone couldn’t grow in this community."

I could not be more honored or excited to begin working at the Brody Jewish Center. I know firsthand the impact the BJC can have on the lives of our students: I was one. Before graduating in 2019, I went to countless Shabbats, ate countless bagels, and planned many programs together with my peers, all thanks to the generosity of our donors. I've made lifelong friends, developed my Jewish identity, and been a part of the thriving Jewish community at the Brody Jewish Center. I can't wait to work with you in order to ensure current students can do the same.
No matter how often you give or for what amount, you are making an impact on the lives of Jewish students in Charlottesville and enabling this community to thrive. I deeply appreciate the way the BJC family believes in the work we do and empowers us to pursue our mission. Thank you for your support and dedication to Jewish life on Grounds. Our students are able to be a part of a thriving Jewish community and have Jewish experiences at UVA thanks to you.
