let's talk about rice The underlying theme of this edition is one of excitement and optimism for our burgeoning agricultural sector in Papua New Guinea.

This theme is an obvious choice, as I am certain the 1,500-plus people who attended the Trukai Rice and Agricultural Development Field Day at the Trukai Farm will agree.

What we witnessed at Erap, on April 15, was a glimpse into our future, specifically the vital role agriculture plays in developing our nation.

Now in its third year, the Field Day promotes Papua New Guinea’s agriculture and, of course, Trukai’s involvement in developing rice farming alongside landowner cooperatives.

It was an honour to have dignitaries – and visionaries – such as Agriculture Minister Tommy Tomscoll, Oro Governor Gary Juffa, Morobe Governor Kelly Naru, and Nawaeb MP, Gisuwat Siniwin, attending and delivering speeches.

In what is becoming an expo-style event, showcasing PNG’s agricultural progression, Oro Province took centre stage this year.

Late last year we signed the first Rice Development and Purchase Agreement (RDPA), whereby Oro farmers will grow rice for Trukai.

In partnership with the Oro Rice Growers Cooperative Association, led by Chairman Edric Saese and the Oro Provincial Government, we have just witnessed the first container of six tonnes of rice shipped to our Lae headquarters – locally produced rice from Oro that will be sold right here in PNG. Another 18 tonnes has already been commissioned and both parties see this as the beginning of a wonderful partnership.

It is a tremendous milestone, and one the Oro farming community and all of PNG should be proud of.

Governor Juffa highlighted a decrease in criminal activity in Oro, due to local rice industry farming reducing unemployment. If we are playing our part in this social change then that is another source of immense pride.

In the longer term, improving manufacturing processes and quality control will enhance the quality and volume of rice produced, which means more Trukai customers will enjoy eating Oro-grown rice for years to come. The potential is enormous.

The Field Day also highlighted the vast innovation in local agriculture, with various science-related displays providing a great learning experience for young and old.

This is important, as it is the youth of PNG who will drive our commercial farming industry forward. We should no longer maintain a mindset that focuses primarily on subsistence farming.

What the Field Day really highlighted was the colossal promise of our entire agriculture sector in promoting village sustainability and wealth creation at the village level. These are merely micro-goals, as some operators look to be setting the bar even higher still.

Kongo Coffee is a classic example of locally grown coffee sold and marketed very strongly – just look at the great packaging. But most importantly, they start with an excellent product.

On a satisfying personal level, Trukai paid the fourth K40,000 instalment of its five-year agreement with the PNG Women in Agriculture Development Foundation (PNGWiA).

These outstanding women will be great contributors to our sector for years to come.

It is indeed an exciting time.

In what marks not only a historic development but also a sign of things to come, the first six tonne container of rice produced since last November’s agreement between Trukai and Oro rice growers has made its way to Lae. The Rice Development and Purchase Agreement (RDPA) between Trukai, the Oro Provincial Government, and the Oro Farmers’ Cooperative saw Trukai recently purchase 6,076.75kg of rice from the Cooperative.

Another 18-tonne container is in the pipeline and all stakeholders spoke glowingly of future prospects for the partnership during the Trukai Industries Rice and Agricultural Development Field Day in April.

In what was an investment of some risk for Trukai, the early dividends are highly encouraging. Trukai General Manager Agriculture, Jarrod Pirrie believes stringent quality control measures will see the project reach its full potential.

“We need to continue to develop, be costeffective, increase the volumes that are coming out, and be able to maintain quality so it is usable in our market,” he said.

“But to get the rice grown and coming back in is definitely encouraging.”

Garry Juffa, Governor for Oro Province, was a special guest on the day, in what was his first time attending the event. Governor Juffa delivered a stirring speech about the agreement and could not disguise his admiration for how his local rice farmers “had delivered”.

“ Today I stand here a very proud man.

Farmers are the true backbone of this country. We must realise that our true strength comes from our land and our people, and that is where we must put our investment. If we reach out to them and bring them up they will, in turn, build the economy of this country.”

They say all good things come to those who wait.

That can certainly be said about three prominent investors in the rice fields of Chingwam.

Nearly two years after an agreement was signed between Trukai Industries, the Morobe Provincial Government, and the Chingwam Rice Cooperative (composed of Markham rice farmers in the Morobe Province), seven hectares of land have been planted and rice is finally growing.

The trio is now set to reap the benefits, after the Cooperative was forced to endure a dry spell through 2015.

With land size the dimensions of about seven football fields, rice growing in the Ragiampum Village will, over time, produce 30 tonnes of rice for consumers in Papua New Guinea.

Chingwam Agreement Gains Momentum

Agronomic checks show steady progress Trukai’s trial rice farming projects at the Kapore Land Settlement Scheme blocks have made steady progress, following agronomic assessments in March.

Robin Wingwafi, Rice Technical Officer, conducted checks on six trial projects belonging to farmers Willie Wohwiehembe, Tiawa Kolonga, Leo Pea, Paul Siune, Annette Raphael, and Boniface Narakau.

The parameters that were tested at the sites included yields, pest and disease tolerance, and milling and cooking quality.

The checks were done using checklists developed by scientists from the National Agriculture Research Institute (NARI).

Mr Wingwafi announced that, should the Kapore trial project succeed, they will also plant rice at selected blocks at Buvussi, Kavui, Galai, Sarakolok, and the Tamba LSS areas, as well as other districts or areas within the Province that show interest in rice farming.

Trukai has numerous similar agreements with local producers across different provinces, with the objective of catering for high consumer demand with more locally grown rice.

Jarrod Pirrie, Trukai General Manager – Agriculture, said Trukai was very pleased with the progress now being made after the company struck partnerships with the Morobe Provincial Government and local farmers to initiate the ambitious project.

According to Ms Bera, Trukai is playing a crucial role in strengthening and evolving the organisation, and on a larger scale, the overall cause of giving women the impetus to succeed in the sector.

“We are providing a certain amount of startup assistance by providing machinery and knowledge. Trukai has similar start-up projects in Central Province, West New Britain, and Oro Province,” he explained.

Tommy Tomscoll, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock, visited the Chingwam fields and urged that public-private partnerships similar to this one were the way forward.

Commitment to Women in Agriculture

Michael Marang, Chairman of the Cooperative, said motivation was now high among his farmers and that he was ready to feed the nation with premium, locally grown rice.

Trukai CEO Greg Worthington-Eyre said he held great hopes for agreements Trukai had entered into, similar to that with the Chingwam Rice Cooperative. “ The incentive here is to have our rice grown here in Papua New Guinea as a really nice product, and one the Papua New Guinean people will enjoy in years to come. Agreements like this take us directly down this path.”

As part of its multi-faceted commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility in Papua New Guinea, Trukai Industries has handed over a K40,000 cheque to the Papua New Guinea Women in Agriculture Development Foundation (PNGWiAF).

“Funding of this scope helps foster innovation and the ability to teach practical strategies that members can implement in segments such as agriculture, fisheries, eco-tourism, and horticulture,” she said.

An appropriate extension of the partnership between the two entities has seen PNGWiAF also provide members with training and assistance on the planting, nurturing, and milling of rice, with Trukai providing seedlings for this project.

We have a strong relationship, and the women’s groups affiliated with PNGWiAF benefit,” Ms Bera explained.

Mr Worthington-Eyre said he was very pleased on a business and personal level with the impact the funding program was making.

“There are many willing and capable women ready to make a difference within the agricultural industry. The partnership we have with Papua New Guinea Women in Agriculture Development Foundation encourages innovation and a platform for equality and independence,” he said.

With each passing year, the Field Day continues to boast new attractions, not only revealing exciting recent developments in the rice industry, but in the whole agricultural sector.

Coffee, cocoa, and fresh foods and vegetables were just some of our daily nutritional staples to find their way onto a host of new display stalls. For the knowledge-hungry, there were fascinating science-based demonstrations educating and intriguing a record number of visitors to the Field Day.

An Array of Activities

The central theme of the event revolved around sustainability and innovation, and on this count alone it certainly delivered. But with more corporate houses and local producers taking part than in previous years, the Field Day has now clearly arrived as an event the agriculture sector wants to see and be a part of.

Small business and corporate delegates mixed freely with Corporate Exhibitor Displays and Small Agriculture Holder Displays as part of the festivities. A Trukai livestock demonstration, sensory rice taste testing (sampling five local varieties), and face painting and balloon giveaways for children under 12 rounded off a diverse itinerary for guests to take in.

Improving and Evolving Rice Cultivation During the Field Day, Trukai was commended by Morobe Governor Kelly Naru for its efforts in improving and evolving rice cultivation in PNG. He saw the company as a leader in including small farmers at the village and community levels, encouraging them to display their produce proudly alongside other, more established operators.

Governor Naru Governor Naru also praised the Field Day itself, and declared his provincial government was in full support of the event’s theme of ‘Developing integrated farming systems for food security in Papua New Guinea’. He declared the need to modernise agriculture by embracing new technologies – evolving outdated systems still used by subsistence farmers. “Traditional agriculture systems used by our forefathers are outdated.

We need to reform the sector to reflect changing times,” the Governor said.

Partnerships Forged

Bigger and Better Than Ever It was only appropriate that in its third year – and bigger and better than ever – the Field Day should mark a bold new era in local rice production – with the help of rice’s most famous name, no less.

In groundbreaking partnerships with Trukai, local cooperatives and Provincial Governments in Oro, West New Britain, Morobe, and the Central Province are now producing rice for the local market. With rice a traditional daily staple for the population, Trukai CEO Greg WorthingtonEyre enthused that these partnerships would see more and more Papua New Guineans enjoying locally grown rice for years to come.

Machinery Unveiled Among the numerous industryrelated technological displays on the day was an exciting innovation that will greatly enhance rice production potential for small rice growers.

Project Support Services Limited (PSS) unveiled their multi-purpose solar-powered agro-processing machinery that will enable small rice growers to produce up to 60kg of rice. The machinery has been designed to adapt to rural village conditions and offers farmers a long-life, easy-to-use solution with zero fuel costs.

One of those partnerships, the Rice Development and Purchase Agreement (signed last year between Trukai, the Oro Provincial Government, and the Oro Farmers’ Cooperative), was lauded on the day in memorable speeches by Oro Governor Garry Juffa and Chairman for the Oro Farmers’ Co-operative, Edric Saese. Mr Saese declared a belief that such agreements would not just diversify income avenues for the country, but ultimately deliver worldstandard produce. “Somehow, someway, we will get there if we do not lose heart,” he said.

Guests Take the Aerial Route For the first time in the history of the Field Day, guests were given the opportunity to take in a spectacular aerial view of just what Trukai has been up to, thanks to another of its emerging local partners, the Chingwam Rice Cooperative.

Helicopter rides to the impressive Chingwam rice fields – roughly the size of seven football ovals – were included as part of the event, in one more example of the organisers’ ability to reinvent the festivities each year.

Plans to Invest Funding Into a Local Agricultural College In a clear pointer to the vested interest the Oro Province holds in the future of its farming sector, Mr Juffa also announced plans to invest funding into a local agricultural college. With a blueprint to restore the college to its former status as a leading educational facility in the region, Mr Juffa said, “We want to build it back up and educate our children – our future. Farming is a dignified profession. We can prove to our children that they are the future, and that farming is the way to build a country.”

There has been steady support for the 2016 Trukai Fun Run from PNG’s corporate sector, with more than K350,000 raised at auctions in March.

Held at Lae and Port Moresby, the auctions were a chance for the business community to bid for this year’s official 2016 Trukai Fun Run T-shirts, which they can now donate to local residents and schools.

Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee President, Sir John Dawanincura, said the Fun Run is an integral part of PNG’s Olympic campaign in Rio. “ The auction provides invaluable financial support to Team PNG and our Olympic campaign. It is our main fundraising vehicle, which is why we always encourage corporate PNG to show their national colours and attend these events.”

There are plenty of incentives for companies to get behind the auction, with the top five bidders rewarded with return airline tickets to Sydney, Brisbane, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Cairns – all courtesy of Air Niugini.

Another key partner is The Institute of Business Studies (IBS), a longtime supporter of the annual Fun Run. Scholarships are offered by the IBS as prizes to selected participants of the Fun Run, and this year they are offering six-month scholarships to five lucky winners.

Overall, a very respectable total of K172,000 was raised in Lae, while K200,000 was donated in Port Moresby.

Cancer Awareness the Tru Meaning Behind Fun Run

While the Trukai Fun Run is an event of such magnitude that it writes its own new chapter and story each and every year, this year’s Fun Run event is especially significant.

Trukai Industries and the PNG Olympic Committee (PNGOC) have now partnered with the Cancer Foundation to bring greater awareness about the issue of cancer to the public’s attention.

The partnership is to promote a cancer‑free lifestyle in Papua New Guinea and encourage lifestyle choices that reduce incidences of the disease in our communities.

Anniversary of Trukai Mission

Trukai Industries marks two decades of donations to the PNG City Mission this year, with centres in Port Moresby and Lae still receiving monthly contributions from the rice producer.

It was back in 1996 that Trukai first gave two 20kg bags of brown rice to the City Mission Centre in Port Moresby for use in the meals they provided to troubled youths. They now also supply brown rice to the City Mission Centre in Lae. Dorothy Koch, Administrative Manager for City Mission PNG, said the initial donations paved the way for other companies to become involved in the work they do. “ As one of the first companies to form a partnership with City Mission PNG, Trukai pioneered the corporate generosity that the Mission has become accustomed to within PNG,” she said.

“ When we approached them following the opening of the Lae Centre, they were very quick to jump onboard, which was fantastic to see.”

Established in 1993, City Mission Port Moresby opened its doors with the intention of housing, feeding, and providing spiritual direction to troubled young men within the streets of the city.

The success of the Centre led to City Mission commencing operations in Lae, with the Suambu New Life Plantation being set up in 2006.

Every day, City Mission provides more than 1,000 meals for more than 400 underprivileged, mistreated, and disadvantaged youths in Papua New Guinea.

Mrs Koch said Trukai has played a significant role in ensuring the meals they offer have nutritional value.

Lynda Babao-O’Neill, Cancer Foundation Patron and wife of PNG Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, has given special thanks to the PNGOC and Trukai for incorporating the Foundation and its vital message into such a major social event.

“By coming on board to be part of the event we will be carrying out awareness on living healthy,” Lady Babao-O’Neill said during the March launch of the Fun Run in Port Moresby.

“By encouraging greater awareness of cancer in our society, we want to get across the message that cancer is beatable and can be prevented if addressed at an early stage.”

“That is the positive message we want to bring across.”

Maryanne Hereva, National Marketing Manager – Promotions & Events, said Trukai was extremely happy to build a new partnership with the Cancer Foundation.

“Such an important health message falls comfortably into line with our company’s brand values and overarching desire to promote ‘True Health’,” she said.

“ Most of the boys who come to us have never eaten brown rice before and don’t know how healthy it is,” she said. “ Hopefully when they leave the Centre they will continue to eat it because they will know how good it is for them.”

Trukai set a new standard in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) toward the end of February, with the launch of its TruCare brand.

Focusing on health and strength within Papua New Guinea, TruCare will incorporate both urban and rural sectors, with Trukai’s existing framework forming the foundation of the company’s CSR structure.

Another component of the TruCare brand focuses on ‘Healthy Living’ in urban areas, with the aim of minimising social issues through the support of various sporting programs and events that are important to Trukai in PNG. The company’s advocacy of women in agriculture and business is also part of its CSR plan.

So far in 2016, Trukai has donated 200 bags of 10kg rice to four main hospitals in the New Guinea Islands, Southern Highlands, and Momase regions. A tonne of rice was also donated to the Youth With A Mission (YWAM) medical ship ahead of its journey to the Southern Region and Huon Gulf. Every month, rice is supplied to feed orphaned children at the Life PNG Care Centre, unemployed youth at the PNG City Mission (Port Moresby and Lae), and people living with disabilities at the Cheshire Homes. “ Trukai is much more than just rice,” Mr WorthingtonEyre said. “ It’s about people, communities, agriculture, and knowledge. We have been in PNG for more than 45 years and look forward to feeding a healthy nation for many more years to come.”

Trukai’s CEO, Greg Worthington Eyre, said the launch of TruCare serves to re-emphasise Trukai’s dedication to Papua New Guinea. “ TruCare is a brand that supports Papua New Guineans – not just in the urban centres, but also in remote areas,” he said.

The National Game Fishing Titles are over for another year, with plenty of excitement for anglers throughout the weeklong event.

Held at the East New Britain Game Fishing Club from March 18 – 28, one of the highlights of the week was the Trukai Shootout competition on Wednesday, March 24.

A total of 13 boats took to the water in the hope of catching marlin that would net them a share of the K13,000 prize pool.

The winning billfish on the day came from Simon Woolcott, who reeled in a 99.6kg Blue Marlin as part of the JCA Spirit team.

The Shootout competition followed on from a successful Calcutta Auction the night before, which raised K26,500.

As a naming sponsor, Trukai not only organised the briefing and auction for the competition, but also provided a bag of Trukai products to each angler who managed to catch a legal billfish.

The company renewed its platinum sponsorship of National Game Fishing Titles at the beginning of March, presenting a cheque for K35,000 to committee members in Kokopo.

Speaking at the cheque presentation in Trukai’s Kokopo base, District Sales Manager Amos Donno said the company is proud to support what has become not just local fishing’s centerpiece but a PNG institution.

Team Completes Certificate Training

On February 7, two representatives from the National Training Council conducted training for CBP (Capacitor Building Program) Cert 4.

Following the orientation and induction of the modules, the five‑day training course commenced the following day.

The participants who took part in the training were:

Our reliance on computers has made the smooth, day-today operation of them more important than ever before… and the likelihood of wanting to pick up your keyboard and throw it out the window more of a reality.

Don’t worry: Trukai’s IT Service Desk is here to prevent that from happening, though!

Based in Lae, the IT Service Desk is the single point of contact for all IT requirements at the company.

IT supervisor Richard Omi encourages employees to contact the service desk to avoid agitated confrontations with their computers. “ Making use of the IT Service Desk is strategically important for the operation of Trukai,” he said.

“ On behalf of the participants, I would like to thank Trukai Industries for having the confidence in us and supporting us financially to complete the CBP Program. I’m glad we were able to achieve good results for the business,” she said.

“ The requests that are submitted through the Desk provide important statistics about what Trukai employees require to complete their work.

It allows us to plan, monitor, analyse, and improve existing services or even implement new services to cater to Trukai’s needs.”

The qualifications the training provided were suited to the roles of the 10 selected individuals, who gained some theoretical knowledge and practical skills in workplace training and assessment.

In 2016, computer problems can often lead to stress (read: swearing at your monitor), but Mr Omi says it’s important to stay cool when on the phone to the Service Desk.

The successful paticipants now have the responsibility to provide and support educational leadership and develop teams and individuals within their areas of expertise.

“ Make sure when you contact the IT Service Desk that the request is clear and accurate,” he said.

Rice is the oldest-known food that is still consumed today, so it’s no surprise that throughout its rich history there have been a variety of views on how best to prepare it.

While it is relatively easy to cook, there are a number of myths surrounding rice that, if believed, could come at the expense of flavour.

In order to separate fact from fiction, TruTok brought in some of the experts from Trukai’s Quality Control Department to answer some frequently asked questions.

How many times should rice be washed out before cooking?

Most of the time it depends on the person who is cooking it. However, to retain the nutrients, rice should be rinsed once or twice, not washed.

Is it necessary to wash rice before cooking it?

Rice can be rinsed, though it isn’t totally necessary to the cooking process.

If jasmine rice is rinsed more than twice, will it lose some of its signature flavour or aroma?

No, it won’t lose any of its taste or smell.
