Thankfully it seems that the long, dark winter is coming to an end and the weather is starting to improve... Thankfully with that comes longer evenings, better driving conditions and with that, the start of the show season and local meets. In fact, as I type this I’m flicking through images posted online from the first show of the year, a good friend’s day out rallying and various announcements on competition cars ahead of the 2013 race season. If this flurry of activity is anything to go by, 2013’s going to be a packed-out year indeed! Ahead of that, we look at how to get the most of our cars postwinter and the best methods to wash off the grime built up over the long dark months in our detailing guide on Page 8. Alongside this we have the return of our technical section with a full engine bay guide that certainly worth having hold of for reference. Our cover article sees us looking at Subaru UK’s announcement in December that they had imported their final Impreza and with that, the WRX STi. The internet has been abuzz with rumours and speculation ever since so we ask ourselves, is this the result of market pressures or has the death chime tolled - is now the time to say ‘sayonara’ to Subaru in the UK? Apparently there’s some other stuff in this issue as well but I’ll leave you to discover that... Lastly, don’t forget you can buy True Grip in print through HP’s MagCloud at www.magcloud.com/user/truegrip

NEWS SUBARU UK EXTENDS NEW CAR WARRANTY

Subaru UK has taken the decision to change its aftercare programme on new cars, in response to feedback from dealers and customers. From January 1, 2013 all new Subaru cars (excluding WRX STI) now come with a new, longer five year/100,000 mile warranty which replaces the previous warranty of 3 years/60,000 miles. The ETCo (‘Everything Taken Care of’) package launched at the start of 2011 is also replaced in favour of the longer standard warranty. Haydn Davies, Subaru UK Marketing Director explained the change. “Feedback received from our dealer network and their customers has confirmed that the ETCo package, though designed to be a groundbreaking and industry-leading offer, was less attractive to the majority of prospective buyers than a longer warranty. TRUE GRIP 6

“Research also showed that customers were not using the services offered by the ETCo package. However, longer warranties are considered as more valuable and so to demonstrate that we listen to our customers and have faith in Subaru’s superb long term reliability and durability, we have introduced a five year warranty.” The manufacturer anti-corrosion warranty remains unchanged at 12 years. Additionally, any customer who bought a new Subaru before December 31 2012 will remain entitled to the benefits offered by the ETCo programme. Full details of the new warranty, including terms and conditions, can be found on the Subaru UK website at www.subaru.co.uk

SUBARU SHOWS VIZIV CROSSOVER CONCEPT AT GENEVA MOTOR SHOW Subaru will unveil the Subaru VIZIV concept vehicle at the 83rd Geneva International Motor Show (5 – 6 March), representing Subaru’s future design direction and vision for technological innovation. The VIZIV is a future-generation crossover concept designed to embody the Subaru brand’s values of ‘Enjoyment and Peace of Mind’. The name VIZIV is inspired by the phrase ‘Vision for Innovation’ and expresses Subaru’s commitment to innovation across its range of AllWheel Drive models. Alongside the new concept vehicle, the new Subaru Forester will make its European debut at Geneva. To go on sale in the UK in May, the fourth-generation Forester builds upon the outgoing model’s credentials as a capable, goanywhere and user-friendly SUV, with improved performance, safety and efficiency along with a larger, higher quality cabin. Subaru’s unique Symmetrical AllWheel Drive system remains at the heart of the vehicle, which was recently awarded a maximum fivestar safety rating by EuroNCAP.

The Subaru press conference at Geneva is scheduled to start at 09:15 on Tuesday 5 March. Further information about Subaru’s stand is available at www.subaru-global. com/ms2013/geneva/. To find out more about Subaru’s range of All-Wheel Drive models, visit www.subaru.co.uk.

The Subaru Outback will also be on show at Geneva, its 2.0-litre Boxer diesel engine now paired with Lineartronic (CVT) transmission for the first time, to give smoother gear-shifting and improved fuel efficiency. The Outback diesel Lineartronic is due to arrive in the UK this autumn.

THE DEVIL’S IN THE DETAIL WORDS & IMAGES Ultimate Shine

Sadly, cars theses days rarely have perfect paintwork and even the most pampered of them need a little extra TLC to really be at their best. With all shapes, sizes and colours of product on the market, Gazb takes his MY05 WRX to Ultimate Shine and finds out that what’s actually needed is an attention to detail to rival a brain surgeon!

BEFORE: Gazb’s MY05 WRX with 28k on the clock: to be honest, it’s already a very level car... I would have been happy with this purchase if it was mine!

TRUE GRIP 8

PRE WASH: Onto the first of many foaming procedures this was done with Meguiars All Purpose Cleaner Diluted in the foam lance with the hot washer set at 60OC

Respray anyone?

Next stage is the wheels for this the list includes: • Gloss It wheel gel diluted 4:1 • Meguiars Super Degreaser 4:1 •U ltimate wheel face brush • EZ Detail Small Wheel Brush • EZ Detail Large Wheel Brush • Wheel Arch Brush • Small inner wheel brush for stubborn marks

ENGINE BAY: Next stop, engine bay! Now knowing that Subarus are all about the flat4 and the driving, we made sure we got this mega clean! Now like most jap cars the engine bays take a fair amount of scrubbing and this one was no different! Once we had spent 30 mins getting all the small bits done, we needed a bigger, more efficient tool for the job... bring on the Autosmart Tornador Cleaning Tool & 2.5hp 50L Compressor! To assist us here we gave a gentle APC foam at 60OC BUT DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME!!!

TRUE GRIP 9

THE DETAILS: Now this is a very important stage in the cleaning process - making sure your rubbers are clean as green tree sap and general grime can build up. This car wasn’t too bad but you would be amazed how dirty even the rubber can get! This was done again with Meguiars All Purpose Cleaner 6:1 by brush and trigger bottle.

...AND ANOTHER WASH! Now wash time (remembering that we have foamed the car 3/4 times with APC and rinsed) we need to hand wash with minimal chance of damaging paint with contact. For the washing we usually foam the car up with Meguiars Hyper Wash at 60OC and one bucket full off warm water with Meguiars Shampoo Plus - the other bucket filled with Dom Perignon champagne, first for washing and the second for drinking!

No that isn’t right, the second one is for rinsing the wash mitt out after each panel. The reason for this is to not contaminate the shampoo with dirty water as you can see...

Even after 3/4 washes, the colour of the water coming off the car is disguisting!

DRYING Car then rinsed again and taken inside for drying. This done with the Black Baron vehicle dryer and various super plush drying towels. This stops those nasty water runs and also reduces the brakes from rusting .

TRUE GRIP 10

CLAYING We used Meg’s mild clay with water and once done the car was taken back outside again to be rinsed down and dried. The reason we use clay is due to surface contamination embedding its self on the surface. If the contamination is bad we opt for more aggressive clay that will in turn mark the surface slightly but the machine polishing would remove that. Next was the job of taking paint depth readings. This is a stage that I do to get a feel for how deep the paint is and also how much I have to play with. I can do it by eye usually but this is a must just to make sure.

Maximum depth

...and, err, the minimum!?!

We can advise the best finish for your vehicle, we can also supply you with the after care products that you will need to maintain the vehicle until the next protection detail service. Maintenance Packages are available please ask for further information. TEL: 07951938177 EMAIL: paul@theultimateshine.com

WWW.THEULTIMATESHINE.COM TRUE GRIP 11

PAINT CORRECTION: For correction we decided to use Gloss It correction products. These products are slightly different from others as the way they work requires a different procedure so Gloss It evolution cut. The tool choice is a Festool Shinex Rotary using a 3m backing plate and a selection of Gloss It pads.

THE FINAL PASS! What you have to understand about LSP products are they all give a slightly different look: Carnauba Wax makes the car look wet but will dull down the flake slightly and the lines of the car will not be as defined. Sealants (depending on make) will give flake pop and will give major gloss look like this Gloss It product or sharp defined lines like Jeff Werkstatt.

TRUE GRIP 12

We opted for the base coat to the sealant of Gloss It Finish applied with Meguiars G220 DA with a Gloss It Finishing Red pad at speed 4 then topped with Gloss It Concorso, again the G220 with a different Gloss It Red pad at speed 3. This is a Show Car finish. It doesn’t have the greatest durability but is ideal as a maintenance product for my customers as it always brings bling to the party!

Since the announcement in December that Subaru UK had imported its final Impreza and with that, the WRX STi, the internet has been abuzz with rumours and speculation. We ask ourselves, is this the result of market pressures or has the death chime tolled - is now the time to say ‘sayonara’ to Subaru in the UK? Breaking the news via AutoExpress, Subaru UK were reported as saying that “The new Impreza has been under evaluation in the UK for 12 months, but the decision has been taken not to bring that car to the UK because of insufficient

demand […] Subaru is concentrating on what it’s really good at – so we’re concentrating on SUVs and the BRZ – we’re hoping to get more [BRZs] next year to satisfy strong demand for that car.”

MORE TRUE GRIP 17

So, based on that, the reason seems straightforward enough; people aren’t buying them anymore. “It’s uncompetitive in terms of CO2, and it’s got a diminishing fan base. It’s become a very tough sell,” a spokesman was quoted as saying. When you consider that Subaru’s annual sales in the UK barely peak above that of Suzuki and are dwarfed even by the likes of Hyundai-Kia with Subaru UK’s annual sales equalling just 10% of the former’s monthly sales (Nov 2012 Source: Automakers & SMMT), you would be excused for wondering how the manufacturer have continued to retain active within the UK market at all. So, with Subaru now concentrating on SUVs in the UK, including the Forester and XV, this leaves the BRZ the only Subaru for those after something a little less run-of-the-mill. Whilst on the face of it, the news is entirely understandable; it’s still unclear how this will affect existing owners and, rather worryingly, is it realistic to expect Subaru UK to last until 2014, let alone U-turn and bring in the new WRX STi? Is it even possible to sustain a national organization with less than a hundred new car sales a month? It’s been argued that Subaru could simply be transitioning to the GP/GJ based cars (XV base) and are trying to wind down production of older GE/GR/GH/ GV platforms. There is currently only one factory capable of Forester/WRX STI production [Ōta, Gunma], and most struggle to see how efficient it could be to have different models that require different

TRUE GRIP 18

production lines. Since not too many WRX/STI were sold in the UK anyway, Subaru have decided not to import the last production run of the outgoing model with dealers selling the remnants of their existing stock. When the new XV based 2014 WRX STi begins production, how likely is it that the UK will get the car along with the rest of the world? The simple answer is that we really don’t know. There’s currently nothing more than speculation and educated guesses to go on. Subaru are remaining tight lipped about

the whole thing and whilst we would all love for them to continue WRX STi sales within the UK, that bridge has now been crossed… for 2013 at least. We would love to see a legitimate UK version of the upcoming XV based WRX STi on the roads of this fair land but for now, it’s not looking terribly likely. Subaru UK’s spokesman has said: “There are hardcore fans out there, but we have to react to how market’s changing and we have to be competitive. It’s an end of an era.”, we feel it’s important to remember that Subaru’s longer standing fan

base once had no Subaru UK, no dealerships to buy from, it was grey imports or nothing. It’s unclear as to whether that could become the way once again – with high exchange rates and stiff competition from the likes of Ford and BMW with their own performance models, it’s likely to become an option for only the most dedicated Subaru purists, purists with particularly deep pockets we must add! As with everything, tastes and particularly cars, have their day – you only need to look at the Lancia Delta to see proof of this, but the MORE

Impreza has been particularly enduring – giving the vast majority of us our first taste of what serious performance felt like. It’s a real shame to see that firmly on its way to becoming a thing of the past but such is the way of things. Legends remain so because they didn’t go on forever, they did their time and stood out amongst the crowd. They did what they did best and no more –hang around too long and their legendary status gets forgotten and replaced with that of an old washed up has-been. None of us want that now do we. The Impreza has been an incredible car throughout the years, there’s absolutely

TRUE GRIP 22

no denying that but looking at the Impreza now, is it really and Impreza? There are many who would say no and that Subaru should have dropped the badge when they introduced the hatchbacks. Right or wrong only time will tell. As for the new Impreza being seen on UK shores via dealerships again, we’re sceptical but we’ve been wrong before…

ENGINE BAY GUIDE (What does what and what goes where..!) WORDS Big ‘D’

IMAGES Big ‘D’

Have you ever lifted the bonnet on your Impreza only to put it straight back down again after seeing what’s under there? I am pretty sure that most of us have been there, even me. The idea behind this article is to help you locate and identify certain service points and components within the engine bay. Given the huge number of changes to the Impreza engine over the years it would be quite hard to cover them all so I have chosen the Classic shape Impreza as my subject, being the oldest and most likely to run into technical issues the Classic seems the most relevant choice.

9. Fuel filter, this is located on the passenger side inner wing and its obvious function is to filter out particulate contamination within the fuel system prior to the fuel getting to the injectors. 10. Fuel rail, this is wrapped around the outer edge of the intake manifold, its purpose is to carry fuel under pressure to the injectors. 11. Fuel injectors, these are fitted to the fuel rail and positioned one per cylinder, the function of the injector is to meter the timing and quantity of fuel allowed into each cylinder.

4.

6.

12. Fuel pressure regulator, it is located on the rear drivers side of the fuel rail, its purpose is to hold a positive fuel pressure within the fuel rail during any engine condition.

More often than not the cause behind your Impreza breaking down or showing you the dreaded ‘Check Engine’ light is a sensory issue, the above pictures show the location of the sensors which are most likely to cause issues.

22. Power steering pump, located on the front drivers side of the engine its function is to provide fluid pressure to assist you steering.

25. Depending on the model year of Impreza you own your Impreza may have individual coil packs or one main coil pack with leads to the plugs.

23. Alternator, located on the front of the engine in the middle its function is to charge the battery and provide extra power whilst the engine is running. 24. Air con Pump, located on the front passenger side of the engine its function is to pump the refrigerant gas round the system to provide you with cold air whilst the A/C is on.

24.

Turbo and associated parts. 26. As you can see from the picture the turbo is located on the rear drivers side of the engine, the basic function of the turbo is to provide positive air pressure feed into the engine. 27. Attached directly to the turbo is the wastegate actuator, its function is to control the turbos output pressure by opening/closing the wastegate port.

It’s the world-renowned Wiki knowledge base for anything Subaru, maintained by experts - you the community! www.scoobypedia.co.uk

29. Probably the easiest item to identify in the engine bay is the intercooler, its function is to reduce the temperature of the compressed air leaving the turbo. 30. The dump/bypass valve is attached to the intercooler, this valve allows the pressure between the turbo and the intake manifold to be vented when the throttle is closed either back to the intake (factory) or to atmosphere if an aftermarket item is fitted.

I hope that what I have laid out for you here has been easy to follow and understand, for those who don’t know their Dump Valves from their Wastegates in the next issue I will look deeper into how the boost system on your Impreza works. TRUE GRIP 29
