WELCOME MESSAGE

True Colors Symphony (TCS)'s mission involves tons of work from idea generation, research, planning, execution to reporting. There is an old saying that it takes the right time, the right place, and the right social connections for a huge mission to sustain. COVID poses the most challenging time to TCS in the last 3 years. However, we are proud to share the milestones we have accomplished. During 2021-22, we aligned our resources and curated different music exchange programs and experiences starting from school outreach to community outreach. Some of the notable programs included our annual awareness concert at Cultural Centre with support from pop artists like Phil Lam and George Lam, Concert in the Dark at school, One Day with the Blind, Motivational talks, and body percussion training workshop. We established the Music Angel Orchestra (MAO) exclusively for SEN students, rehearsing on a weekly basis with professional training and scholarship program, and held 2 concerts each year for MAO. Along with MAO training, we created a train-the-trainer program to equip art and music tutors with better skills in handling SEN students. We initiated a carer-empowerment program by using body percussion to enhance the bonding between the carer and the corresponding kid within a family.

This year, we leveraged the support from corporates under the ESG Initiative (Environment, Social and Governance) and created a socially inclusive music program with zero music skills requirement. Green Music program engages intergenerational families in a fun way and educates them on recycling, up-cycling, and re-purposing household items as percussion instruments. Beats in the City targets senior citizens by training the community to engage with the elderly through a set of body percussion movements based on the Chinese meridian massage.

IF ERHU IS MY GIRLFRIEND, THEN CHESS MUST BE MY BEST FRIEND.

Enhua, borned with Amblyopia, has moved to Hong Kong from Harbin. Being a newcomer, he settled down in a 100 square-foot sub-divided flat in Sham Shui Po. There are neighbors who are Junkies, Gangsters, Beggars, and some of them are from the ethnic minorities. These sub-divided flats could tell stories of all walks of life, Enhua, leaving his hometown alone faced his first difficulty in town, language barrier. Fortunately, Erhu and Chess went along with Enhua through ups and downs, he then believes something better is yet to come. Cultural differences have shaped Enhua into a stronger person. He has soon decided to learn Cantonese by listening to local news and local famous actor, Wong Tze Wah’s stand-up comedy performances. With these medias, he can soon be able to speak and understand this new language and to learn about the culture and colloquial language of Hong Kong. Gradually, Enhua has discovered people in the city are friendly, warm and helpful. It simply has the human touch. Enhua has a highest record of playing blind chess against 4 opponents simultaneously among the countless chess games he has participated in. Playing chess is like a person’s life, there may be difficulties in our daily life. There is an old saying ‘Ten years of practice for one minute on the stage.’, Enhua has not been defeated by all the failures he encountered, instead, he learned from mistakes, make reflections and try harder in the next game.

interpersonal communications, or maybe one day, lead him to the victory of the game. Enhua is a great fan of Chinese traditions. Being inspired by chess, not only has he continued to pursue his music dream, but also to step out of his comfort zone recently. Fond of taking up challenges, giving back to the society is something that Enhua always want to do. In the past year, Enhua has been exploring for different possibilities with new roles at the True Colors Symphony. He was one of our emcees and performer in ‘True Colors at School: Motivational Sharing’ and tour guide and tour planner in ‘One Day with the Blind’ and performer in other events. Enhua, as a dream chaser, still has a long way to go and with a lot of effort to be made. Taking reference from a rule in the Chess game, the ‘Knight’ and the ‘Pawn’ can never move backwards in a chess game, not matter how slow-moving the progress is, he will neither step back or stop pursuing his dreams.

COME WALK WITH ME One Day with the Blind 時,Inti 便覺得 很有意義。

True Colors。 SOME PEOPLE SEE, BUT THEY HAVE OTHER CHALLENGES. I CANNOT SEE, BUT I APPRECIATE THE COLORS OF THE WORLD WHOLEHEARTEDLY. THIS IS WHAT ‘TRUE COLORS’ MEAN TO ME.

Inti found One Day with the Blind very meaningful when she first heard of it. “There are a lot of good public education programs in society, but through spending a day with us in person, our participants get to know more about us in-depth. It is very important to help the public guide us correctly and let them know how they can communicate with us. This is the key to eliminating stereotypes and misunderstanding,” explains Inti. There are different people in the world. To Inti, even those falling under the big umbrella term “healthy” have diverse strengths and weaknesses, so do those with visual impairment (VI). For people with VI, what are they good at? How should the others cooperate to complement them? If you

meet a person with VI on the street, how do you approach this person in a way that both of you are comfortable with? These were the questions Inti wanted to address in the activity. At the same time, seeing that most of her young participants were the only child of their families, or had only a few siblings, Inti hoped to broaden their horizons and let them know that not everyone was that fortunate. In spite of the insight it may bring, the groundbreaking concept came with a lot of uncertainties. “I had a lot of questions in mind when I first heard of it. Is it feasible? How can I be a guide without sight? Am I really capable of planning the trip?” Inti admitted. She was relieved after knowing that the activity aimed at presenting the real life of people with VI. All she had to do was to link up things she did daily. She gradually found her direction. She was even more pleased when she found out that the participants were very friendly. “Originally, I feared that I could not meet the demands and expectations of the participants. Yet many of them turned out to be very supportive,” says Inti.

Another obstacle which Inti came across was the weather. “I enjoy jogging. That was why I initially planned to jog with my participants for a while. Unfortunately, the activity was postponed to around May eventually. To avoid staying under the heat, I had to move all activities indoors,” says Inti. No matter outdoor or indoor, she insisted on making the activities realistic. “Say, since shopping was an important part of my daily routine, I designed a relevant mission for them, which would also help them use the white cane,” explains Inti. She also shared how technology improved the lives of people with VI through all kinds of apps including those for navigation, transportations and ordering. Shared experience opened up new topics for Inti and the participants, allowing her to share her story thoroughly. At the same time, the blindfolding and guiding sessions Inti proposed helped participants to put themselves into the shoes of Inti’s. “That is why I say that it is not only a job for me, it is also meaningful. I have a mission with me,” Inti recalls. Participants have surely enjoyed and benefited from the meaningful activities Inti designed, yet in turn, Inti has also gained the sense of satisfaction, her pay and lovely memories. She proudly recalled how the young participants listened carefully to her sharing with their eyes wide open and their backs straight. She elaborates, “they took up the method of guiding very quickly and could not wait to guide me! Another nice thing about the trip was that I was paid fairly, my effort was respected. I have also got to know more families. It feels so good to be able to communicate with them, who would send me photos with descriptions like ‘photo taken for Inti participant outside the sportswear shop, both took water bottles, bought a t-shirt’.” To Inti, each snapshot is a very precious gift. This explains why she wants One Day with the Blind to rerun. “If you ask me, of course I shall want to be the guide again! With experience and skills, I believe that I can train new guides and offer them advice too,” says Inti. Thinking that this would be a possible career choice for people with VI, she is very positive towards the activity, “if it can be organized regularly for parents and children interested, our participants, True Colors Symphony and we all benefit from it.”

AN UNUSUAL DAY OUT

A FAMILY WHO JOINED ONE DAY WITH THE BLIND

VISUAL IMPAIRMENT MEANS YOU CANNOT SEE, BUT OTHERWISE YOU ARE A ‘NORMAL’ PERSON. YOU FEEL THE SAME THINGS, YOU DO THE SAME THINGS AND YOU WANT THE SAME THINGS.

Having joined True Colors Symphony as a family, with Davinia in the orchestra, Davonna, Davena and their mum Michelle in the choir, Michelle thought that it would be nice to go one step forward, join One Day with the Blind with her daughters and get to know people with visual impairment (abbreviated as VI below) in person. Apart from wanting her daughters to know what the world of a person with VI was like, she initially wanted them to remember how fortunate they were to have average vision. Yet soon the family found out that the interactive activity had much more to offer. #Fun #Exciting The first surprise for the family was how they could explore new places and have fun together with their tour guide with VI, Inti. Expecting to assist Inti somehow, it did not take too long for the Poon’s sisters to realize that VI people could handle their daily life routines perfectly. From direction giving to ticket booking, Inti could lead them through anything. In fact, it was also very exhilarating for them to explore the world of a person with VI. Through witnessing how Inti oriented herself, how she survived in the MTR with all kinds of signs, exits, escalators and urban noises, how she used her cane and perceived things around her, they slowly put themselves in the shoes of Inti.

#Challenging

The learning process would never be complete without a step away from the comfort zone. In the beginning of the activity, the family was asked to blindfold themselves. Entering the world of darkness, things became even more complicated when they were asked to purchase assigned items in certain shops under guidance. Contrary to what they have expected, nothing was easy. “I had no idea where I was going, it was really hard to navigate myself and I kept bumping into things,” says Davinia. “It is also hard to figure out which paper is which and pay,” Davonna adds.

Without sight, other senses become crucial. “We had to listen to the description and direction very carefully to get the right object. If we were the ones giving directions, we would also have to describe things very precisely and clearly,” says the sisters. For instance, how would the blindfolded person know how left or right one should turn? “You imagine a clock in your mind, it is twelve o’clock in front, then three, six and nine o’clock,” they answer proudly. #Meaningful #Inspiring #FullOfLove No matter the blindfolded or the guide, each of them had different takeaways and reflections. “The whole journey requires a lot of listening. It reminds me to listen more to people. For us with proper vision, we usually judge with our eyes, but we have to listen to people and pay attention to what we listen too!” Michelle says. She also has new insights into what the activity can bring. “Before this activity, I thought we had to pay sympathy to people with VI. After this activity, what changes is that I think people with VI can actually have a normal day without our help. We do not need to sympathize with them, we only need to give them an equal opportunity to perform themselves, in all kinds of aspects, no matter in music or in any career that is available now in the society. We should give them a chance to try out!” The family has enjoyed their time with Inti, “It’s very very amazing. Thank you Inti for bringing us into her world. Now we start to understand how a person with VI does the daily routine”

By doing so, we can not only solve SEN the problem, but also prevent it from happening again. Having designed the program, Dr. Doo and her team were in turn surprised by the feedback of the tutors. “They were very open-minded in the face除了Train the Trainer,杜醫生一直積極參與True Colors Symphony to-face sessions. clinical settings, where children might behave differently from their daily routines. Therefore, we benefit from these real-life examples as well,” explains Dr. Doo. Another thing which encouraged her a lot was the fact that many tutors in society were passionate about helping and teaching their students, instead of giving them up because of their SEN. These are the reasons why Dr. Doo thinks this program ought to continue. “We are still exploring how we can do it, but so far, feedback has been positive. This excellent platform which encourages exchanges of ideas should be retained,” Dr. Doo says. The key to sustainability, according to her, would be to deliver the knowledge to every tutor without experience in teaching SEN students, whether they teach music or not, so they know that SEN students are able to learn like everybody else. Apart from the Train the Trainer program, Dr. Doo has also been actively participating in other projects of True Colors Symphony. She is one of the consultants of Music Angel Orchestra, one that is exclusively for SEN students. What makes her contribute her time and ideas? “I see SEN children every day at work and I am familiar with their characteristics and needs. To me, they are not ‘patients’, but living people. They, too, have strengths and can excel. This explains why I initiated the Train the Trainer program. We saw how important the role of a tutor was in the development of an SEN student. I really hope to see tutors get along with their SEN students well and enjoy music or performances together.” Dr. Doo says. To her, True Colors Symphony is a place where we see what SEN people can become, “these people, with different backgrounds and abilities, have shown us how they have enjoyed and created their music in spite of the obstacles. No matter the circumstance, they still can be brilliant.”

MAKING THE IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBLE 侯炅卓 CHATWIN HAU

ALTHOUGH I DIDN’T PERSIST IN KEYBOARD LEARNING, IT HAS HELPED MY BODY COORDINATION. I WAS ALSO MORE ABLE TO GET INVOLVED IN CONVERSATIONS RELATED TO MUSIC.

Music can be about abstract aesthetics, but it can also nurture practical skills. One of the reasons why Chatwin’s mother decided to let Chatwin join Music Angel Orchestra was because she wanted to provide him a suitable social environment. “It is very hard for him to socialize with anyone apart from his tutor in his one-to-one percussion lessons. Here, he can feel free to develop his social skills while he enjoys music.” While artificial social settings might make children with special educational needs (SEN) even more nervous, they pick up etiquettes for effective communication comfortably through music. So after half a year of training, what does Chatwin’s mother think of Music Angel Orchestra’s mid-term concert? “I found it very amazing! Once they were on stage, they really acted like musicians! They seemed to know very clearly about the differences between stage performances and rehearsals.” At first, she was quite skeptical about the outcomes of the concert. Ensemble requires members’ coordination, communication and sense of unity, but everyone was just too different. Even more worrying was the rehearsal progress. Yet surprisingly, everyone turned out to be fantastic, the players knew exactly what they had to do. To Chatwin, the happiest thing to him would be the opportunity to try out different percussion instruments. “Chatwin has been very curious about all sorts of percussion instruments since the audition session. So far, he has been able to try the triangle, tambourine, and snare drum, things he would not have been able to play with at school. He would realize ‘oh, the triangle actually sounds like this’. I have shown him videos of these instruments, but hands-on experiences are far more memorable.” Being able to play the snare drum was a very exciting news for Chatwin. He always has an urge to use the snare drum mallet, which has a distinct shape at the front. Even with “SEN”, these children never cease to explore music and the world around them with curiosity. “There is really no need to define these children, or think that they would be unable to do something just because they have special needs. We all have different talents, this makes us all very similar!” Perhaps the only thing that we should do is to open our hearts and accept the inevitable differences among us.

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FOREVER 蔡皓雅 CHOI HO NGA

I joined True Colors Symphony as an intern as I was interested in learning more about arts administration. It also gave me the

wonderful opportunity to work with SEN students for the first time. I really appreciated that I was allowed to work on a variety of tasks including drafting social media posts, researching performance venues, sorting out transaction records, attending practices etc. When I think of True Colors, it makes me think of a close knitted community. A welcoming place that provides SEN people the chance to develop their musical skills and to make like-minded friends. It also benefits their family members by providing them with a network to ask for advice and support. My internship coincided with the peak of the pandemic and did greatly affect it. My internship was postponed a few weeks and I also wasn’t able to attend as many rehearsals as I would have liked to. I was so happy when I was invited back to help out at a concert after my internship period. It was actually the first True Colors’ concert I’ve attended, as concerts during my internship period were rescheduled due to the pandemic. I was quite nervous when I first attended a rehearsal, especially since I had never really interacted so closely with SEN students before. I didn’t really know how to start a conversation with them, but was so surprise when they actively came up to me to initiate a conversation. I think it’s normal for be nervous at first, but it is also important to not be afraid to talk to them. Don’t be afraid of the SEN student responding negatively to you, as long as you show interest in knowing them with an open heart, it will lead to a great conversation. Over the years I’ve had many dreams, it’s always growing and changing as I too grow and change as a person. Especially right now, where I’m in a sort of crossroad, not knowing quite where my life and career is heading to, I can’t really envision where I would be in a year let alone in the further future. Though I guess my ultimate goal or dream is to lead a life where I can focus on the present and enjoy each moment to the fullest.

DEEP WITHIN EACH HEART, THERE LIES A MAGIC SPARK 彭鈺承 HUGO PANG
