DANGEROUS HIGHWAYS

Zoji La is a mountain pass in the Himalayas at an altitude of 3,528 m. It provides a vital link between Ladakh, a region administered by India as a union territory, and the Kashmir Valley. The road is a part of the National Highway No. 1 between Srinagar and Leh and was originally built in 1947 for military purposes. It takes 3 hours to cross Zoji La. The near-vertical cliffs, dangers of landslides and periods of heavy traffic make the passage especially challenging.

A mountain pass in the Andes – Paso Internacional Los Libertadores – serves as an important land crossing between Chile and Argentina and the main transport route from the Chilean capital city Santiago into Mendoza city in Argentina. On the Chilean side, it takes 29 hard switchbacks on an extremely steep slope – over 400 m up – to reach the Tunnel of Christ the Redeemer (Túnel Cristo Redentor) and the national border at the middle of it.
