Having grown up around the track with an experienced trainer by her side it would be safe to say Mollie knows just what to look for in a winning horse, but the social atmosphere of racing events tends to ‘hold her up’ when it comes to having a bet on race days. “Whenever I try to have a bet at The Races, I always get caught up talking to people and never make it there in time,” she said. “Normally the horse I was going to bet on ends up winning.”

As the SAJC’s oldest female member, Mollie has become a cherished member of the local racing fraternity, according to SAJC Chief Executive Brenton Wilkinson. “It’s a huge achievement to reach 100 and we are honoured that Mollie Rothe is still an active SAJC member,” he said. “As an organisation we greatly appreciate her long standing commitment and we hope we have given as much back to her as she has done for us.”

In true racing fanatic style, Mollie chose Morphettville as the venue for her 100th birthday on August 6 – enjoying a three-course lunch in the Winning Post restaurant with family, friends and fellow SAJC members. So what’s her secret to health and long life – apart from regularly enjoying a day out at The Races of course? “Three glasses of sherry a day – one-and-a-half at lunch and one-and-a-half at night!”
