What a truly great summer we've had this year! I'm sure you'll agree that it's been outstanding, day after day of sunshine - there really was no need to travel abroad for a dose of sunshine. It's great to nip into town when the weather's good for a spot of shopping and perhaps lunch afterwards. Across the region's towns there have been many changes, some shops closing, others opening, hopefully though, the net effect is that our towns remain vibrant places, with interesting shops, great restaurants and pubs. Of course, we can all help by making a conscious effort to buy locally where possible. The money we spend circulates through the community, so ultimately we all benefit and the towns continue to thrive. To this end, we've launched a SHOP LOCAL campaign, a scheme we've devised to gently remind residents that it really helps their local community if they support their town through spending locally. Just a simple concept, but with the threat of the internet

This issue sees us feature Tavistock (p28). If you haven't visited or have, but not recently, it's a great town to spend time at, with many great shops, eateries and galleries - there's also an excellent museum and a walk along the Tavy with free fishing. Here at the magazine, we're looking for additional display sales assistance - if you have experience in this field, particularly for the North Devon area, please call and ask for Nigel Jones. If you use the HUB What's On websites, either as an event organiser, or a member of the public, please be aware of major improvements coming later in the year. These comprise of increased functionality, greater ease-of-use and an interface re-skin. We'll also have a content management widget available, so if you already enter events into the HUB for promotion, why not show these same events in your own website simultaneously, with no extra effort? The HUB currently has over 4,500 organisations registered, who use the HUB to promote their events. North Devon and West Devon HUBs are scheduled to be up and running by the end of the year. Too Long a Secret! New customers to Austins in Newton Abbot usually comment that it’s one of the best kept secrets in the South West. Family owned and run by David Austin, the Managing Director, who’s always available for a complaint or a compliment (thankfully, we don’t get many complaints!)
A Devonshire moth collection Andre Daniels, the owner of Artisan Homes, has a flair for creating unique pieces of work. “At the end of July I was really pleased to launch my new moth collection. Over the many years of making furniture, my signature inlays have become even more life -like and eventually evolved into the
collection I have launched in the last few months. Andre tells me that the response has been overwhelming and in the few month they have been made available to the public they have flown to every corner of the globe from Canada to Australia and London.
Charity helps out with audit
East and Mid Devon issue which are stored at Tipton St John. We also received over 200 South and West Devon magazines at the office making 20,200 magazines in total. Donations were made to each charity involved in the audit. Incidentally, we also have a print certificate from the company that print the Devonshire magazine (formerly Coast & Country), stating that weʼve always printed in excess of 10,000 magazines for each version. No other magazine company provides this level of transparency! A couple of the Devonshire magazineʼs sister publications celebrate their 20th year in July next year - I suppose weʼve been around a long time! Editor
Unfortunately, there are many unscrupulous publishing companies out there, claiming all sorts of circulation figures for their magazines. My opinion on this is that if the publishers donʼt print or sell what they quote, then itʼs fraudulent! To this end, staff at the Devonshire magazine decided a magazine count was in order, so the Mare & Foal Sanctuary was called in to independently verify our print figures. Amy (right) verified 9,800 magazines for the South and West Devon issue, with Mary from the Blind Club at Sidmouth verifying 10,200 for our Exeter,
Community Spirit in bucket loads! Since we launched the SHOP LOCAL scheme in mid September, the Devonshire magazine team have been bowled over by the uptake from businesses across the region. All the team at the Devonshire both live and work here in Devon, so we consider it vital to support local businesses, particularly the shopping/retail sector.

Each year, the 10 day long Two Moors Festival brings concertgoers in from as far as America and Europe to enjoy sensational chamber performances, set in some of the most beautiful areas in Devon. Once again, Ashburton plays host to the Festival. In its fourteenth year, this world class event brings the finest artists to the depths of Devon. ‘Beyond the terminus of memory’ A major solo show at Marine House Saturday 1 November to Friday 14 November Charlie O’Sullivan is firmly established as one of Britain’s leading contemporary artists with an international following. This show of 30 new works simply reinforces the evolution of her style and the depth of her imagination. The title she has chosen is “Beyond the Terminus of Memory”. “In his 1949 book, Beyond the Terminus of Stars,
the East End poet Hugo Manning asks, ‘In the oceans wastes, is the albatross alone happy?’ For him, I believe the answer lay between rumour and reality, truth and fiction, that place best occupied by storytelling. The point where memory overlaps with imagination forms an inspirational and creative frontier. This is the departure point for the body of over thirty

An Old Abbey Town Tavistock's Abbey has been at the centre of the town since Saxon times
One of England's most famous sons, Sir Francis Drake, was born here in Tavistock This fine statue of Sir Francis is situated on the Plymouth Road approach to Tavistock
I should imagine that as long as man has inhabited England, Tavistock will have been occupied. In the early days, tribes foraging, hunting and fishing along the banks of the Tavy will have had all that was required to eke out a living. Major settlement occurred when the Saxon King Edgar's brother-inlaw, Ordulf founded Tavistock Abbey in 974 AD, also giving the Abbey 20 properties with which to support the upkeep of this costly religious community. The major worry in those days was Viking attack, and despite paying the danegeld, Tavistock Abbey was sacked and burnt by the Vikings in 997 AD, being subsequently rebuilt by Ordulf and Abbot Aclfmar. After Domesday in 1086, Norman lords deprived the Tavistock Abbey of lands and the Abbey was also required to cover the fees of 15 knights.
Alice in Wonderland! - a golden cloaked hare blowing an heraldic trumpet on roof of the Bedford Hotel. Surely contrived by someone with very deep pockets and eccentric taste. The turret is particularly elegant. The Duke of Bedford appointed Jeffry Wyatt to carry out the design work of this building (he was also responsible for the transformation of Windor Castle in 1824)
In 1105, a Royal Charter was granted by Henry I for a pannier market, which is still in existence today, with a large market building just back from the square. For five centuries the Abbey was the centre of life at Tavistock until that great vandal and asset stripper, Henry VIII, laid waste to the religious institutions across the land and as a result, Tavistock Abbey was fairly comprehensively destroyed (although minor parts of the Abbey can still be seen).

Tavistock's major claim to fame is as the home town of Sir Francis Drake, although the exact spot of his birth hasn't been verified. In 1549, the Drake family suddenly departed to live in Kent, where Francis learnt to sail on the Medway. Drake carried out the second circumnavigation of the world and his exploits against the Spanish are the stuff of legend. King Philip II was said to have offered a reward of 20,000 ducats for his capture (about ÂŁ4 million today).

Tavistock, like Ashburton to the East, has also been a stannary town for centuries, with mining activity on the moor bringing much prosperity to the town over the years. The Devon Great Consols mine at Blanchdown was one of the biggest copper mines in the world, reputedly earning the 7th Duke of Bedford ÂŁ2 million alone in the mid nineteenth century. Incidentally, Endsleigh House which was home to the Bedfords is now run by Alex Polizzi as Endsleigh Hotel. Today, Tavistock's a bustling town with many small independent
shops providing an interesting and friendly shopping experience, with the main streets being West Street, Duke Street, continuing down to Brook Street. Not to be missed is the walk up along the Tavy into the town from the main car park, which takes you along some of the remaining Abbey walls and past the Abbey Still House. Once you arrive in the main square, you can see Saint Eustachisus' church and within the grounds you can see the sole remaining arch from the Abbey cloisters (right).

Amazing effigies within the church, reserving a place inside the church with this sort of display was the most you could possibly wish for. Constant reminders of mortality are ever present, use of a symbolic skull seems to be fairly common practice. Hardly the most cheerful message, but in their day and age, when a mere fever could see you off, their pragmatic approach was understandable. It reads:

Autumn is always a busy time of year in the interior design industry. Trade Shows and Design Weeks are taking place at home and abroad and any interior designer worth his or her salt is closely reviewing what the world has to offer, often with specific clients and projects in mind, taking away from the vast choice presented a carefully edited selection to add to their palette. Such an edit may include a particular texture, colour, fabric or wallpaper, a raw material to use within a design or as a component for a bespoke furniture piece, a particular chair or table or the merest hint of a certain shape or pattern that is appealing.
A GLAMOROUS NATURE Devon based interior designer Susan Folwell of Artisans and Artists talks about interior design trends and the current fascination the industry has with nature.
Each designer will notice different aspects of any given array of materials and products on offer, each will have a different perspective and resulting interpretations will be unique and tailored to a particular client and project. It is this creative aspect of the interior design industry that makes it such an exciting space. Here are some of the things currently in our studio's edit.

Nature Turns Up The Glamour
Nature has turned up the volume on glamour and is striking out in all of her glory. Wallpapers cleverly printed with metallic or opalescent mica finishes and fabrics incorporating reflective elements sit well alongside materials with a natural background. Perennially popular motifs such as exotic birds have come to the fore and colourful examples can be found fluttering across fabrics and wallpapers. Palms waving seductively, from the most delicate patterns on fabrics and wallpapers to full scale 10ft high utterly convincing faux trees - nothing adds quite such drama to a room than a 10ft palm.

Playing with fire! THE SQUARE IS PACKED. It’s nearly midnight and the last barrel of the year is zig-zagging through the crush, everyone craning their necks, standing on tip-toe to know will it come their way. The next runner lifts it to his shoulders, blackened by soot, the potato-sacking wrapped round his hands already smouldering with the heat. Very soon now, with the iron hoops glowing red, he must heave the remains crashing to the ground. The men will throw their own gloves into the blaze, grinning at one another and shaking hands. They will sing Auld Lang Syne. The ritual is over for another year.

This ancient Devon tradition needs treating with respect
Ottery St Mary’s TAR BARRELS So come and watch - but just stand well back! THE DAWN WILL COME UP LIKE THUNDER from the firing of a dozen ‘rock canons’ in one particular Devon town this November 5th as it has done since who knows when. The town is Ottery St. Mary and the year that began what is now known universally as Tar Barrel Night is lost in the smoke of a thousand bonfires. The only certainty is that if someone tried to roll out those famous blazing barrels from scratch nowadays it would give a Health & Safety inspector a heart attack – which doesn’t mean that visitor safety is not of paramount importance to the people who run it each year. Their job is to oversee the running of seventeen blazing barrels as they pass

rapidly through the narrow streets of the town on the shoulders of the chosen ones – and that means Ottery-born and Ottery-bred – the only people empowered to carry this honour. Accompanied by warning shouts of ‘”Up’ards!” or “Down’ards!” they run pell-mell through the crowds who gather in this ancient town, sparks and flames spewing from the mouths of the barrels as they twist and turn, scattering the throng until things get too hot to handle and the next runner wrestles it onto his own shoulders. To drop a barrel is to bring about its premature demise and the old sweats amongst the runners

But unlike the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona this isn’t a display of mindless bravado played out for the benefit of a crowd, as Andy Wade, the event organiser told Devonshire magazine, “This town has an ancient history and for those of us who take part in Tar Barrel Night this is part of a way of life”. “We are proud of an annual event that has been passed down through generations and we ask that people who come to celebrate the night with us treat those traditions with respect. And the best way to treat a flaming tar barrel with respect is to stand well back and watch!

Echoes from the past OTTERY WAKES EARLY every November 5th to the sounds of canon fire. Not ship’s canons you understand but so-called ’rock canons’, hand-held lengths of pipe - looking as though they might once have belonged to Dick Turpin - stuffed with explosive powder and detonated by striking an explosive cap with a second piece of ironmongery. These are let off, sometimes singly, sometimes 12 at a time. If you live out of town these explosions come as deep reverberating thuds. Closer to they rattle windows, scatter pigeons and set unknown numbers of Ottregians turning over in their beds to check their alarm clocks and say things like, “Oh, joy! It’s Tar Barrel Day today!” It is 5am.

Ottery St Mary’s TAR BARRELS
Go to blazes! CAMERAS AT THE READY? Picture this. It’s 7.30 and a massive bonfire, the size of a three-storey house and weeks in the building, is reflected in the River Otter. The heat is already intense as the blaze grows higher and Guy Fawkes’s dreams go up in smoke for the 408th year in succession to the cheers of the crowds and the neon-lit whiz and throb of the fair across the river. Down there is the Millennium Meadow and up here we are on St. Saviour’s bridge. It’s a great vantage point and where much of the crowd gathers as the first of the Men’s barrels is lit. The coal tar catches, the flames lick round the rim and the crowd parts as this first of “the big unz” starts down the slope towards the town, scattering the crowd as it goes. Look out, Ottery!

Difficult Animals
I
t seems to me that vets today have it easy when it comes to handling difficult animals. Back in the 60’s we did not have the rapid acting sedatives and dart guns available today. One day I had just finished morning surgery at my Plymouth practice when I received a call from the police. “A leopard has escaped at Plymouth Zoo. Can you attend?” Not having the courage to say no, I said I would be right there. Well I did all the police work and the zoo was bang next door to my surgery. Then it occurred to me that the zoo had closed a year ago; so I was intrigued. The problem of what equipment to take was soon solved as I had only a slow acting narcotic, usually used to sedate animals before an operation. It took about 15 minutes to work; a lot can happen in 15 minutes. But I took a large syringe! On arrival I found out what had happened. A leopard was being transported from abroad to Whipsnade Zoo. The driver had received permission from the owners of the zoo, the Chipperfields of circus fame, to rest overnight in their premises. During the night the leopard had broken the wire in the corner of the trailer and escaped. The driver was nowhere to be seen. The fact that the red light district of Devonport was just down the road was irrelevant. The leopard was most probably still within the zoo’s high fence, but to be safe the police had cleared the whole of the surrounding Central Park and police cars were circling the park with bells and sirens galore, an impressive sight, but in the zoo itself there was an eerie silence. The site was steeply sloping and I began to walk up, quartering the ground as I climbed. A third of the way up I met two high ranking police officers, a magnificent sight in all their silver insignia. The

thought struck me that the leopard might me attracted by all this glinting bling, so having exchanged pleasantries I rapidly put distance between us and worked my way up the slope. What I thoughts I was going to do if I met the beast heaven knows, but the ignorance of youth drove me on.
