BUDLEIGH DIARY SEPT & OCT 2014

Editor’s Letter A warm welcome to the Autumn edition of the Budleigh Diary. We’ve had a great summer in Budleigh, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures reaching into the 30’s, we really can’t complain. Autumn is a lovely time of year, the transition from green to golds and bronzes on the trees can be spectacular and the clear skies which September & October usually bring, mean it’s a perfect time to get your walking boots out. Don’t forget that from the 1st October, dogs are allowed back onto the main beach in Budleigh. You can find this information and more in our tide time tables on P40. Just because the summer is drawing to an end, doesn’t mean there’s not still lots to look forward to in Budleigh, we’ve a fantastic line up of events throughout Autumn. You can keep up to date with everything that’s going on by visiting www.eastdevonhub.co.uk.

There are now over 100 organisations registered on the HUB in the Lower Otter Valley alone and all this event info gets brought down from the HUB into this Diary! Our community interview this issue is with St Peter’s Music Association, an organisation which has been around for almost 20 years. They do a great job in arranging varied and affordable concerts with artists from all around the world. We’re visting one organisation per issue in the Diaries, so if you’d like to be featured, just contact Charlotte. All the best for Autumn, don’t forget to change your clocks on the 26th October! J. Ingles Cover picture: The Otter Valley by N. Jones Readers - All correspondence to: jingles@budleighdiary.co.uk

Apples by Ted Gosling

f the grape is the prince of hot house fruits, the apple is certainly king amongst hardy fruits. None can equal it in point of usefulness and from culinary to cider the apple was always highly regarded in Devon. In the 18th century the ‘eve of epiphany’ or ‘twelfth night eve’ was well celebrated in East Devon. Farmers attended with their workmen carrying large pitchers of cider and would go into the orchards during the evening for the wassailing of apple trees. Encircling one of the best bearing trees, they drank to the following toast three times.

“Here’s to thee old apple tree Hence thou must bud and whence thou mayst blow, And whence thou mayst bear apples enow. Hats full cups full, And my pockets full to huzza.”

This was a very ancient and universal custom in Devon and it is though by many authorities to date back to pagan times. The word wassail is derived from the Anglo-Saxon words ‘Woes Hal’ meaning be thou of good health. This done, they returned to the farmhouse, the doors of which they always found bolted. This had been done by the ladies, and no entry could be made until they guessed what tit-bit was in the oven.

supper, during which a large pan full of cider was passed around for the company to drink from. I should imagine that after all that real old rough cider there must have been a few hang-overs the following morning. Cider presses were common place at the turn of the last century, when nearly every farm in East Devon made it’s own cider. Nowadays cider presses are antiques much coveted by in-comers to give a premise flavour to their restored country cottages. Sad to think they have lapsed common use to become valued merely as decorations. More than 6,000 distinct varieties of apples known by 22,000 different names are registered with the national fruit trees centre. However, commercial apple growing in the West Country is confined to the few varieties that meet the hard economic

demands of fruit farming, and many of the apples that existed before the second world war have disappeared. My grandfather planted a very old variety in his garden, named Devonshire Quarrenden which was first mentioned in the ‘Complete Planter and Cyderist’, published in 1690. It was a much esteemed Devonshire apple of middle size, of a deep red colour approaching purple, with a brisk

pleasant and rather peculiar flavour. I now live in this house and the old tree still bears fruit. Two local varieties were introduced by Messr’s Stevens and Son nurserymen of Woolbrook nurseries Sidmouth in the 1920’s. Woolbrook Pippen, which in appearance was similar to Ellison’s Orange, and Woolbrook Russet, a green yellow apple with rough skin and a juicy low-acid taste. Sadly our lack of knowledge tends to favour the flood of foreign apples which swamp our markets, and the knowledge of English apples a part of the inheritance of the country bred men is becoming rare. One apple which grew in every pre war orchard was Tom Putt though really a cider variety, it was much prized as a culinary apple and every school boy of my age who raided pre war orchards knew his Tom Putt. From Charles Ross to the Mother apple, they all had their appropriate season and were appreciated for their special qualities. It is good to know that more and more people are now becoming interested in our native varieties.

St Peter’s Music has been around since 1995, some 15 years longer than the Budleigh Salterton Music Festival which was featured in the last edition. It was formed by the then Director of Music of St Peter’s Church, Sylvia Pritchard, with the support of the Vicar, Rev Robert Gibbs. The plan was to have a number of chamber music concerts each year to avoid the need for the good citizens of the town always to have to drive to Exeter in the evenings for similar music. The advent of the Music

Festival in 2005 has neatly completed the Budleigh Salterton music scene into a year round possibility. Since that time the Festival has been a great feature of the musical life in the town each July and the 2014

Festival has been among the best we have had. Until early 2014 St Peter s Music existed under the umbrella of St Peter s Parish Church, a building which has such a ďŹ ne acoustic for sound. It has recently, with mutual agreement, par ted company with the management of the church and is now a fully independent organisation with its own Constitution. It has been slightly re-named as St Peter s Music Society, thus retaining the old association with the church but allowing a wider scope of activities in dierent venues. From its early beginnings, St Peter s Music Society has always given an opportunity for young musicians to perform in public. We have had concerts by the Purcell School from London, the

Wells Cathedral School, Exeter School and St Margaret s School, respectively on several occasions. They have all demonstrated how great is the young musical talent in the UK. From time to time we have also had artists who are from the very top of the musical tree. One can recall Richard Baker of BBC fame, pianists Stephen Kovacevich, Imogen Cooper, Peter Donohoe, John Lill and Paul Lewis, the Takacs Quartet, actor Timothy West, Voces8 and the young violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen.

born pianist, Agnieszka Pluta, prizewinner at both national and international competitions, will play a mixed programme of music by Mozart, Brahms, Liszt, Chopin and Ginastera. This will be followed towards the end of October with some old friends; The London Concertante, who will be playing String Quintets by Mozart, Vaughan Williams and Beethoven. Both these concerts are at St Peter s Church while the earlier ones have been at The Temple Methodist Church which is a new venue for us. What of the future? 2015 is seeing a Harp Recital in April by Devon based harpist, Elizabeth Jane Baldry and, returning to supporting the young theme, the Lux Wind Quintet from the Welsh School of Music and Drama in May. The programmes for these two concerts are still being agreed. In June we will have a return visit by the Kammerphilharmonie Europa with a programme of largely baroque music. But the big news for 2015 is a piano recital by international celebrity Paul Lewis on Saturday 3rd October. This will be an all Beethoven recital. This concert is a must for all music lovers in this part of the world. You should get it into your diary now! SEPT & OCT 14

Cec Hardy’s lighthearted take on life doom and gloom even if winter’s nigh and there is an ‘r’ in the month. Or maybe it should be an ‘ahar’ for on September 19th ‘International Talk like a Pirate Day’ comes round again. I always look forward to dusting down my parrot for that one.

Stranger than Vixen by Cec Hardy

Apparently the Diary is coming out every two months from now on. If only I’d known I could have made up a supply of true stories and stored them in the computer equivalent of the freezer. But now that Young Mister Ingles has declared the magazine bi-monthly I’d best get used to it. I thought I might try to concoct something about September as it’s not normally a month I write about but decided it wasn’t worth the effort. Days get shorter, it’s colder and closer to Christmas and wherever you go there are wasps, thousands of them. I don’t know what these things are actually for but apparently they do something useful during the summer then let their hair down and go on a wild rampage in autumn, scoffing your food like ravaging seagulls. Then I remembered it’s not all

SEPT & OCT 14

Even better, the school holidays finally come to an end and I can dust down my bus pass as well and go out to play. Wife Christine’s won’t require dusting but having at last attained official pensioner status she will have to forego the pleasure of proclaiming her youth to the driver and anyone else who may be listening (being a thespian she can project for several hundred metres). I’ve warned her not to expect the driver to refuse her pass on the grounds that she looks much too young – it never happened to me. Of course many pensioners decide that the English summer is more or less over and the Indian one may or may not happen. Going abroad has its advantages but you have to be prepared for strange foreign foods like risotto, lasagne and chicken tikka masala. Even more strange are some of the items on menus such as: ‘Spewed teak and bowled potoats’ ‘Oilcan beans wit rise’ ‘Pumpkin scrapples in grave’ ‘Livers wit bikin and cheaps’ It’s probably better to stay at home and take your chances with the weather.

Having run out of things to write about September I was a trifle stumped as it only amounted to 376 words which wouldn’t fill a page. Then a series of weird happenings happened. We went to a concert featuring a tribute band. On the following day we travelled to Cornwall for the weekend and stayed in a B&B we’d never been to. It being hot I ventured out in search of a bottle of water but no shops were nearby so I popped into a theatre directly across the road and heard familiar strains from the night before wafting though an open door. A poster confirmed that the self same band was playing that evening. We had enjoyed the night before but decided we’d had enough tribute for one year. A few days later incredibly hot weather tempted us into the Sidmouth sea for our annual swim. Afterwards we stopped to deposit some rubbish in one of the new hi-tech solar waste bins. As we did so it suddenly played ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’. Now I know it’s been the anniversary of the beginning of WW1 but this was spooky, especially as it was a familiar version which I’d recorded on the harmonica for one of Christine’s plays. For one brief moment I thought that fame had struck at last, if only among hi-tech solar rubbish bins. Alas, it turned out that Chris’ digital recorder in a file she was carrying had been accidentally activated continued on page 41

Budleigh People My Story - Zoe Price

Life in tranquil Otterton! My name is ZoĂŤ Price and with my husband Chris, and two children Mia 6, and Joel 3 years old, we moved to Otterton, Budleigh Salterton in December 2012, having lived in Sidmouth for many years. We love living in East Devon and feel it is a blessing to be near the magnificence and beauty of the ocean. The rhythm of the waves, whether they are gently lapping on a sunny day or crashing on the pebbles during a storm, help keep us in touch with the power of nature. We often enjoy quality time on the beach after a hard day at work and school. Otterton village being a more rural location provides a tranquil setting for family life with a lovely small local school, church, village hall, Play Park, pub and mill. There are many beautiful walks across the fields and alongside the river Otter. As a family we enjoy the abundant wildlife and so far we have been lucky enough to spot an otter crossing the path, to watch trout sunbathing and

have seen a kingfisher darting along the river bank. We have our own business caring for pets and walking dogs whilst their owners are at work or on holiday. Our work enables us to meet many interesting characters, from bearded dragons to fluffy rabbits, cheeky kittens to dashing donkeys. Since starting this service in 2006 we have grown and extended our family of regular pets and enhanced our skills to include pet therapy and dog training. The Donkeys in the photograph are part of the Donkey Sanctuary Foster Scheme, which finds loving homes for donkeys who benefit from the one-one-one attention private homes can often provide. They are fostered out to John & Tina Horn, who employ me to give them some extra one to one grooming and holiday care. TALES OF IRELAND It hits you as you step off the ferry at Rosslare. A difference, something odd, but good. You can see it, but can’t say what it is. Welcome to Ireland! At the terminal, as I wait to catch my train connection to Waterford, I casually ask for a time-table. They don’t have any. How about a map of all the stations then? The station master eventually finds one in a locked draw. No I can’t have it, but sure they will photocopy it for me. The copy comes out right enough, all the towns and cities in Ireland. Only one slight problem, the railways lines don’t print out except for the one from Dublin to Belfast! After a good think the station master asks if I remember the childhood game of “ joining the dots.” I dissolve into fits of laughter until I realise it wasn’t a joke! So, there we sit until my train arrives, planning all my trips from my base at Waterford until we get stuck when the pen packs up on the line to Dungarvan. Ireland’s people have instant solutions to self-created

SEPT & OCT 14

Yarns from the inimitable FCR Esgen problems, so they are always right. This isn’t a dig by the way, it’s an undisguised compliment. If you live in a culture that’s always right, your self-esteem naturally soars. Maybe that’s why people who come here feel so happy; they start feeling good about themselves! Finally my train rolls into the Rosslare terminal. The loco looks like a 1960s model and the coaches not far behind! Everything is gaily painted inside and seems to work, even the windows open. As we jog along the rails, the countryside through county Wexford is a beautiful rural vista of tiny patchwork fields bordered by colourful yellow gorse, as if some giant started to make a very large chessboard and stopped halfway through! Finally, as we cross over the river Barrow and enter county Waterford, two boys fishing in a small boat spy us and wave frantically while we go over what seems like an old bridge of Brunelian design. Our train trundles on through railway crossings, some still worked by hand. Women in flowery aprons rush out as we pass to lift the gates that stopped the nonexistent traffic. Of course, we get the obligatory wave and I find myself curiously waving back like a child caught in a time-warp.

huts on a concrete plinth passing as stations, but what is “reality in Ireland?” Is it what you see, or what you think you see! We remained at one station for at least ten minutes though nobody got on or off; eventually we found out why. A man on the station wanted change for a twenty euro note and passengers on the train were asked if they could oblige. I found myself searching through my pockets too. I wouldn’t have done this, I thought, on the 125 to Paddington; but there again would an English train double as an ATM machine when it pulled in at Reading. Eventually, as we finally snaked into Waterford station, I realised that Ireland was starting to change me before I had even stepped onto the platform; but I liked the metamorphosis! FCR Esgen C2014

Nostalgic happenings on the farm

The Old Vet’nary by Ken Watson

Tragedies Someone once said, “Life is one long tragedy”. I certainly, in my travels, saw my share. I have said before how people confide in me as a vet. A farmer from Sidbury told me how as a young man he was driving his horse and cart down Station Road in Sidmouth in a storm with his new young wife at his side. Driving a farm horse in a cart can be one of the most beautiful of experiences, as I can vouch myself. Suddenly a tree fell across the cart and his wife died instantaneously, while he received only scratches. Can you imagine that? In Buckley Road, Sidbury there lived a handsome middle aged couple. The would often come to the Sidmouth surgery with their boisterous Cocker Spaniel. One cold winter’s night, readying for bed in their luxurious house, they switched on one of those electric bed warmers so popular then. It wouldn’t work. “Oh well, just warm it on the Aga”, one said. A few minutes later it exploded, smothering both their faces with caustic chemicals. They were scarred for life. I was called to the scene of a fire in a cul-de-sac of fine houses, just behind Plymouth Hoe. An old lady had fallen on a paraffin stove and died. Her cat had survived by hiding in a cupboard. I started off badly because my entry to the cul-de-sac was blocked by a TV cameraman intent on getting an overview of the scene. Full of his

SEPT & OCT 14

own importance he just glances back and said “You can’t come along here”. I had to disabuse him of that idea and we parted on unfriendly terms. When I arrived at the front door the young constable on point duty was very solicitous because he said I would have to walk through the focus of the fire to reach the cat in the cupboard. I am afraid I rather dismissed his concern but he still said, “Well mind where you tread”. Now the main characteristic of a fire scene is the blackness that engulfs you and I was stepping gingerly by torchlight when I looked down and realised I was astride the charred body of the little old lady, looking rather like a large doll. I had no option but to carry on to the corner cupboard where the cat was cowering. Then I had to return. We found a good home for the cat. Many events remain in the memory. Such as the day when the hounds streaked across the railway line near the village of Cornwood just as the express came through. Trains do terrible damage; or the time I was called to squat in Devonport where 5 dogs had met a sudden death, spread about the squalid scene in the throes of rictus. With the aid of the MAAF Lab I came to the tentative conclusion that someone had given them takeaway leftovers, the foil plates were everywhere, and in their ravenous hunger they had eaten not only the food but parts of the plates as well, the interaction of the metals proving toxic.

When I first qualified, I found myself becoming increasingly involved in clients and animals tragedies so that, for example, I have something of myself every time I put an animal to sleep. I had to resolve that I would try to harden myself to life, but there was one event which has always haunted me. I had regular clients, a pleasant couple who lived in Turnchapel with their Dalmatian dog. He was well known at the surgery because as well as treatments he spent frequent spells in the kennels when his owners went away for short breaks. The husband was a jolly Betjemanesque type of character, and the wife was a very likeable matronly woman, a busy local midwife. I got to know them well and on one of my visits to the house she revealed that she suffered from severe depression. She also explained that, contrary to some opinions you could not shake it off or ‘snap out of it’. Anyway one Friday she brought her dog into me and said would I board him until Monday when her husband would collect him. She went straight home and killed herself. I have always, to this day, felt that if I had even an inkling of her intention I might have talked her out of it. Yet life had to go on and the close company of animals would soon raise my spirits, as they still do. K. Watson

Don’t amazing coincidences come in threes? Or is that just buses and squirrels? Well strangely enough I’d spotted a fox having a kip in the garden a couple of months earlier. The very day after the rubbish bin incident we walked home with some friends and I told them about the fox. We invited them in for coffee and who should be in the back garden but the very same vixen I’d spied two months earlier. Well probably the same one and probably a vixen for ‘Stranger than Dog Fox’ wouldn’t have the same ring as a title, would it?

Celebrating 22 years of Business in East Devon

Helen Mulvaney

MANAGING your MONEY The Death of Annuities?

A

client recently asked me if I thought that the proposed new pension legislation means the end of annuities - well I think the answer is no. The new proposed rules which will take effect from April 2015 (subject to consultation and possibly change) mean that retirees will be able to access all of their pension funds. However, for some, and especially those with big funds, there will be a tax bill to consider and this, in itself, for some retirees, might be a reason for not going down this route.

you may be aware, it might not always be possible to time your retirement. Moreover, there’s the risk of outliving your funds

Her firm also provides a specialist annuities service for people approaching retirement and newly retired which operates nationally. An annuity does provide a guaranteed income for life and longevity in itself could be a problem. An annuity does provide a guaranteed income for life and can also provide benefits for a remaining spouse’s lifetime too and this might be the most important need. Discussing

However, the biggest issue for many, many retirees is simply how to get a reliable, steady income which will see them through retirement. When you look into some of the options available to provide income then there is nearly always an investment risk involved and once again this might not be a risk that they want to take into retirement. Many solutions may also carry timing risks and, as

Some retirees are just simply risk adverse and they don’t like the idea of volatility and the prospect of their funds moving up and down. For these clients an annuity might

High quality marketing for your business well be the most suitable option and therefore I believe that there will probably be a place for these products. Over and above this question, the proposed new legislation has simply brought the issue of retirement options to the forefront and now many retirees are thankfully more and more aware of what’s available. Many new retirees will now, hopefully, make the effort to either seek independent financial advice or to at least search themselves for a good deal. If you have lifestyle issues, such as high blood pressure or diabetes you can often claim an enhancement and if you feel that you can take a very limited risk then you could also look at with - profits annuities, some of which have performed well over the years providing regular increases in income to help fight against inflation. It’s possible that many would-beretirees have simply postponed their decision on retirement options until April next year when the new proposals will come into effect when there will be greater certainty about the options. At that point, I do believe that clients considering taking their funds out of pensions need to have advice on the tax consequences, the investment options and whether or not they can actually achieve other types of objectives - for

I’m sure we will be able to help many clients with these very difficult decisions in the coming years, no matter what the legislative landscape has to throw at us and I suspect that annuities may well still pay a part in some retirees planning.
