WHERE TO FISH T R E E M E A D O W Words & pictures Russ Symons

Peace and Polaroids Russ Symons unwinds at a fishery in West Cornwall’s ‘subtropical’ zone

Peter Phillips applies side strain to a hard-fighting rainbow trout on Willow Lake.

T

REE Meadow is one of the most southwesterly stillwater trout fisheries in the UK. In deepest West Cornwall it is situated just outside of Hayle on the road to Penzance. Believe me, it’s a long way west, but is in that heaven-sent ‘subtropical’ zone, which means that you get palm trees mixed with the oak, the ash and the allimportant hawthorn bushes! In some years it has hatches that are literally weeks ahead of the rest of the country and it most certainly has a very early hawthorn fall, which you might have guessed by now is one of my favourite times of the year. For some people the sight of the year’s first swallow is the beginning of the good times. For me it’s the stuttering, half hoverhalf forward flight of the hawthorn. When I see this ungainly insect riding the wind, I know that spring has sprung and that the best of the fishing is off to a running start! Willow Lake is the smaller, lower lake at Tree Meadow. It’s stocked with some larger fish, often to 20lb-plus and – because of the windbreak afforded by the green, thickly woven bushes and trees – is often glassy smooth. With a peaky cap and a good pair of polarised sunglasses, it’s possible to watch the fish feeding on damsels, corixa, buzzer, beetles and all manner of dry fly. For those with the inclination, just watching the fish can be an education in its own right.

Often, from the way the fish are chasing, it’s possible to work out what is on the trout’s menu for the day, giving a good indication of how to fish and what fly to try. A spooning job will then either confirm your guess or maybe indicate an alternative fly to use. Good generic stalking flies are the inevitable Damsel and Montana, but for those of you who prefer to use smaller, more imitative flies in these circumstances try Epoxy Buzzers, Diawl Bach, GRHE, PTN, Copper John and Brassies. One thing about fishing dry fly on the bottom lake is that you can often see fish coming from yards away and, by the time they take your fly, you’re already well psyched-up and twitching in anticipation. Try Hawthorn, Black Gnat (all season), Sedge, Daddies and Grey Duster – most dries will work, they’re all here. The top Sedge Lake can be something of an enigma until you get to know it.
