Health & Spa

How do you create an individual, contemporary and calm space? Insight from behind the scenes at SALA Phuket Overlooking the sparkling waters of the Andaman Sea, SALA Phuket has a unique, calm and contemporary look courtesy of the Department of ARCHITECTURE Co. Ltd. Design partners Amata Luphaiboon and Twitee Vajrabhaya received the Silver Medal for Siamese Architects for their design at SALA Phuket. Here they share their insight: Age old techniques re-interpreting local skills and crafts such as the use of wood-carving, stuccowork and painted cement tiles which is typical of Sino-Portuguese architecture and seen in the heritage of the buildings in the old town. Phuket gives SALA Phuket an individual look. Colour; The resort is casual and relaxing and the white colour scheme gives a light and airy feeling balanced with subtle grey tones that add a modern twist. Blacks and reds are used to differentiate between areas. The reception area is the guestีs first impression of SALA Phuket so we wanted to make this area a little more exciting with a brighter colour scheme.

22

Water; We wanted the two pool areas to be relaxing, casual and fun so we included three distinct areas with Jacuzzi seats, a bubble bed and a kidีs pool. Water is also used to heighten the dining experience. On the rooftop, the restaurant guests dine surrounded by water with seats sunken into the waterีs surface, making diners feel as though they are floating on islands above the sea. Open air living; Open air living is accentuated throughout the resort. Within each villa, interior and exterior spaces seamlessly blend bedroom, bathroom, living space, pool and landscape into one continuous living experience. Courtyards; The character of the SALA spa lies in its multiple courtyard experience with each courtyard having its own mood. There is also a misty walkway courtyard where the passage through the mist and water provides an ethereal and mysterious experience making guests feel extremely relaxed.

Koh Mak | Koh Kood It is worth spending a few more hours away from the bustling island of Koh Chang to submerge yourself in a truly serene atmosphere, that feels like your own private world. Koh Mak and Koh Kood are located off the east coast of Koh Chang, and are easily accessible by speedboat or slow boat. If your goal is to dive into the sea and be instantly surrounded with an eye-catching underwater world, you can choose to stay at any of many resorts, choosing your favourite style on either, or both islands, because diving and snorkelling spots are very easy reached from either of these two islands. Certainly, Koh Kood, the bigger of the two, offers more of a range of accommodation and activities. Yet Koh Mak has a charm that will make you feel as if you are a pioneer, delving into pure unspoilt nature and a local way of life.

32

A small road leading away from the main pier of Koh Mak will take you through coconut plantations to the resort area, with various kinds of accommodation available from internationally high standards to cheap and cheerful for backpackers. Although they are very different in rates and service, most of those resorts are located next to a long private beach with panoramic views and serene sunsets, or sunrises for all you ‘early birds’. The best activity on Koh Mak is to do nothing, lying on the soft beaches with only an occasional tourists, reading, swimming, eating, and then sleeping some more. That’s really the best way to stay here! However if you’re unable stop your hyperactive side, then you may rent a bicycle or a motorbike and ride it around the island. But be careful on the roads, the condition is usually rustic, and most of them are still unpaved.

If you have a huge desire for activities, Koh Kood is your solution. Because of the larger size, Koh Kood can offer tourists more options for active fun – various water activities, trekking, waterfall tours, or kayaking. Koh Kood also has many white sandy beaches around the island, surrounded with emerald-clear seawater. Hence, it is sometimes called “The Andaman of the East.” You don’t have to worry about accommodation on Koh Kood, as you can choose from a large array of resorts which are located all around the island, allowing you to choose one that is a perfect fit to your own style. Most of resorts on Koh Kood offer tourists a 3-day-2-night package to visit the island without toil. The package includes speedboat transportation from the mainland, accommodation, meals, and some short excursions. When buying a package to Koh Kood, don’t forget to make a deal for the inclusion of a trip to Klong Chao Waterfall. This is a ‘must see’ jewel of the island; you really shouldn’t pass up the opportunity of visiting a magnificent curtain of water falling from an abundant tropical rainforest, down into a crystal clear natural pool. Furthermore, we recommend you spend your evening before dinner taking a kayak along the mangrove forest, which looks amazing when viewed from the water, but just be careful not to drop your camera.

33

Sights & activities: Koh Mak

Ao Suan Yai If you would like to see how the underwater world of the eastern coast of Thailand looks, ask your resort to organise a speedboat to take you out to Koh Kra or Koh Rang for some snorkelling. But if you think that you and a peaceful beach shouldn’t be separated, you may choose to stay still, gazing out towards to the horizon, looking far beyond the sea. Nobody will blame you for treasuring your relaxation time.

34

Located on the northeast of Koh Mak, Ao Suan Yai posesses the longest beach on the island, offering visitors soft puffy sand, and a blue sea perfectly suitable for swimming. The beach also provides a very romantic panoramic view of the sun setting, set against Koh Phee and Koh Kham as a beautiful background. Both islands can be easily accessed by a long-tail boat, which takes about 5-10 minutes. Along the shady beach of coconut trees, you’ll also find internet cafés, a post office and various forms of accommodation.

Koh Kood

K l o n g C h a o Waterfall

Khao Takiab Beach

When you are deciding as to whether you should get yourself pampered at a cosy boutique resort by a quiet beachside, or to stay at a crowded city hotel in order to spend your time strolling through the hustle & bustle of night-market shopping streets, which are all decisions to be made while you are planning a vacation to the famous resort city of Hua Hin. Then Khao Takiab Beach might be the ultimate answer for such an awkward choice, as you can have both the hustle and bustle of busy streets, and relaxation in one convenient area. It is located about 7 kilometres from the downtown area of Hua Hin. Khao Takiab Beach is just the ticket, a place where you have very easy access to the market by Songthaew, by catching a local public ‘taxi’ pick-up truck, providing two-rows of seats, and arrive within 10 minutes. Due to this area being less crowded, Khao Takiab Beach has become a more popular and a favourable choice for those holidaymakers seeking serenity and a quiet atmosphere, but that is

36

within easy reach of downtown Hua Hin. The beach is divided into two parts by the Khao Takiab Hill, providing peaceful places to relax on both sides At the foot of the hill a Buddha image is located, positioned in standing gesture facing out to the sea. You can take a stroll up to the top of the hill for unbeatable views of the beach and the sparkling city of Hua Hin. La Mer, a popular hilltop restaurant, is located up there too, offering panoramic views over Hua Hin and the Gulf of Thailand right from your dinner table. Around the foot of the hill, there are many seaside restaurants offering some excellent appetizing seafood to tempt you to come in. Supatra by the Sea serves seafood on uniquely stylish dishes. Here you can enjoy your dinner while being seduced with the romantic ambience, provided free of charge by the beach of Khao Takiab. Sasi Garden Theatre also provides a set menu of fine Thai cuisine together with

several shows consisting of traditional Thai performance; the venue is nestled in the beautiful environment of Khao Takiab. However it doesn’t matter if you prefer street food, as you can just hop on a Songthaew to the night market in Hua Hin town and enjoy your exotic meal out in the open. Along the long shoreline of Takiab Beach, you will find plenty of choices of accommodation to choose from. Most types of accommodation are boutique resorts, which focus on providing guests with a high standard of service. Baan Talay Dao is a small resort by the beach where you can enjoy a classic Thai style bungalow situated in a shady area, with a cosy relaxing atmosphere. While the Seahorse Resort offers something fashionable, hip and chic, but it is not located on the sand, so you’ll have to spend a few minutes walking down to the beach.

Going to Hua Hin is a piece of cake, as there are various types of transportation available from Bangkok. The fastest way to get to Hua Hin and other western coastal provinces is by air. The only scheduled carrier currently operating between Bangkok and Hua Hin is SGA Airlines. The flight from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Hua Hin takes only 50 minutes, with travellers flying on 12-seat propeller aircraft, which purposely fly at low altitudes to give passengers a chance to enjoy breathtaking views along the entire journey.

Most temples in the Khao Takiab area are located on the hills and will reward you with breathtaking bird’s-eye views of the local coastal landscape. At Wat Khao Takiab, you will be fascinated by many Buddhist images in the holy temple, as well as being able to enjoy a view of Hua Hin from the top. Nearby is Wat Khao Krailas, it’s viewpoint provides a good view over the local fishing village and Khao Takiab Beach.

From the southern bus terminal on Borommarachachonnani Road there are buses heading south every hour, making stops at the various villages and towns along the way. You can catch any of them and get off at your desired destination. Also, there are some faster buses that run directly between Bangkok and Petchaburi, Hua Hin and Prachuab Kirikhan. Train is the most authentic way to travel. Travellers can depart from Hua Lamphong

Pranburi Beach

A secluded stretch of sand at Pranburi seems to have one of the most romantic beaches in Thailand. Since it has been claimed as a great alternative to escape the bustles of Hua Hin, with many unique boutique resorts set in a more private atmosphere, Pranburi Beach is the answer for a peaceful relaxing celebration of the romance between two special people. The usual scene at Pranburi Beach is not just the long shoreline and clean seawater, but also many couples strolling around hand in hand, enjoying each other’s company. Many couples come here for their honeymoon or to propose marriage, while many other people decide to stay here purely to lose their everyday hectic lives. No matter what you purpose for visiting is, Pranburi Beach always offers an ideal place for leisure, less than 30kms from Hua Hin. Under its romantic ambience, many chic and charming boutique resorts have bloomed along the serene beach. Hua Plee Lazy Beach Resort will surprise you with its unique decoration of simple household commodities, which have been adapted to use as hip decorating items. Praseban Resort has only 14 rooms, but proposes a touch of Balinese living in a very cosy landscape. If you fly first class, and are

38

looking for something with a unique level of elegance that serves your “Upper class” lifestyle, you may want to check in at one of these 5-star resorts; Aleenta or Six Sense Hideaway. Nothing is better than spoiling yourself on your room’s balcony, looking out at the sea and the horizon, or just lying down in your laziest posture and letting the masseur tend to your tired muscles and bones using traditional Thai massage or western techniques. Getting yourself pampered in a selected spa & treatment package is another great idea while taking your vacation in Pranburi. Most resorts offer their signature programs to soothe your body and mind. For an ideal day trip, don’t miss paying a visit to Sam Roi Yod National Park, which covers an area of 98 square kilometres and has a landscape made up of limestone mountains, mangrove swamps, and many beaches. It is also home to various kinds of local and migrating birds. One of the most popular things to do in the park is to visit the Khao Daeng Viewpoint. This can be reached with a 30-minute climb up a steep and rocky 320-meter trail. The Khao Daeng Canal Boat Trip is also available for visitors who wish to take a journey along the canal and witness various species of wild birds while taking in all the picturesque sights along the way.

Ban Krut | Bang Saphan Ban Krut and Bang Saphan are situated in the Prachuab Khirikan Province, and are fresh new places to spend your leisure time within an easily travelled distance of the metropolis. Since the famous destination of Hua Hin has become a big city with more crowds, some tourists head to other more private beaches in the area, located far from the hustle and bustle of the major town. There are many small, but good quality accommodation choices located along the long beaches, which are contrasted by a local fishing village and coconut plantations just behind the coastal area. Ban Krut is where you can find many comfortable and private boutique beach resorts and spas, where you can let yourself be pampered, allowing you to truly unwind, and let all those normal daily stresses just drift away. However if you head further to Bang Saphan, you will get even more solitude, a great place for those who just want to get away from people. The major attractions in Bang Saphan are beautiful bays and picturesque islands. “Bo Thonglang Bay” is among them. It is located some four kilometres beyond Mae Ramphung Bay along a beach road. It has a clean white sandy beach, which is one of the best in the area for swimming. Next is “Mae Ramphung Bay” where, apart from getting a striking view of the natural landscape, you can find some excellent seafood restaurants and beachside accommodation available at reasonable prices. Other peaceful beaches and bays include “Thang Sai Beach,” “Laem Kum Beach”, and “Bo Nok Beach.” The last beach, “Bang Berd Beach” has a wide brown sand coastline, which curves and stretches through “Tham Thong Bay” and on to Chumphon Province. Bang Berd Beach is perfect for joyfully biking along the beach in the morning, and is also the meeting point for travellers who wish to take the shuttle boat to dive around “Thalu Island”, “Sang Island,” and “Singha Island.”

Sights & activities: Thongchai Mountain

A must-see attraction of Ban Krut is located at the top of the Thongchai Mountain. Pra Maha That Chedi Pakdi Prakat is a holy religious place where Lord Buddha’s relic is housed. The five-topped pagoda building of the Pra Maha That is magnificently constructed using a traditional Thai architectural style, designed by the national artist Mom Ratchawong Mitravudh Kasemsan. The location where the Pra Maha is situated is the best viewpoint for a panoramic scene of the Ban Krut area.

Whale Watching

Ban Krut is also a famous location for whale watching activities between June and October of every year, when the Bruda whales come close to the beach providing exciting chances for tourists to view them up close, a really memorable emotional and personal experience.

Koh Thalu

A true island escape, Koh Thalu is located off Bang Saphan’s shoreline and can be reached by boat with a twenty-minute journey. The island with white sandy beaches is surrounded by coral reefs and various kinds of colourful marine life. The name of the island, Thalu which means ‘pass through’ derives from a huge cliff with a big see-through hole that can be seen from the mainland when the tide is low enough. Some cosy accommodations set in rustic styles are available on the island.

Get there From Bangkok, just catch an air-conditioned Bangkok – Bang Saphan bus at the new Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal on Barommarajachonnani Road, then hop off at the Ban Krut junction, and you can easily take a bus or a motorbike taxi to the beach. If you prefer to take the train, it’s possible to get the train from Hua Lamphong Station in Bangkok and get off at Ban Krut station. Then, hire local transportation to the beach or your accommodation. Please remember though that not every train stops at Ban Krut Station, so check with www.railway.co.th for the current train schedule. From Hua Hin, you can take a local train or any buses heading to the southern provinces, and ask them to drop you off at Ban Krut or Bang Saphan.

Overnight Since Ban Krut and Bang Saphan have become more popular as alternative choices of seaside areas to spend leisure time in, a huge variety of accommodation types are available, varying from mid-ranged resorts to budget bungalows, all set along the beach with great views of the sea. Koh Tao

Amongst the diving venues in The Gulf of Thailand, Koh Tao is well-known as being the most outstanding, due to its abundant marine life; ease of access, and extensive diving facilities. So, if you need to hide from the chaotic scenes of the city, or daily ongoing battles in the office, come to Koh Tao and start to untangle some of your stress-knots caused by any modern work life. Koh Tao and its surroundings have become some of the most famous diving sites in Thailand, attracting a huge number of divers from all over the world each year. Why do these divers keep returning to Koh Tao? The main reason is that, aside from the underwater beauty of the coral reefs and marine creatures, Koh Tao has become a highly popular venue for diving schools, providing a variety of education ranging from open water courses for beginners, right through to advanced instructor courses. Although it is widely known that Koh Tao produces a vast number of divers every year, and has consequently established itself as one of the leading diving centres throughout Asia, this small island shaped like a peanut provides visitors with a combination of inexpensive prices for sun seekers, and Thai-style friendly services. Accordingly, Koh Tao and its neighbouring islands have now developed a large offering of accommodation for visitors, known as ‘diving resorts’ due to the scope of related facilities that they provide. Many of them arrange tour packages for underwater sightseeing at your convenience. If you’re seeking solitude, head to Chalok Baan Kao Beach located on the southern coast facing Phangan and Samui islands. The area is considered much quieter than the famous Mae Haad and Sairee beaches. Ao Muang, the only bay in the north area of the island provides another great hideout cove, because it can only be reached by boat. The bay is most widely known as being the place where most novice divers experience their first diving lesson.

42

Sights & activities: B i k i n g a ro u n d the island

The road network on Koh Tao is not fully developed yet, so biking onto some dirt roads and tracks up and down hills is an interesting way to discover the island, as you will have a chance to find some coastal areas that are hidden at the end of some of the pathways. There are many motorbike, ATV scooter, and bicycle rental shops in Mae Haad pier and on the way to Chalok Baan Kao.

N a n g Yu a n I s l and

A gorgeous neighbouring island, Koh Nang Yuan, is another point of interest located pretty close to Koh Tao. It is comprised of three small islands, but when the tide is low there is a sandbar that naturally connects them all together. Nang Yuan Island is a private island where an admission fee is required, but it is really worth it. There are is also some accommodation available on the island.

Get there The most convenient way to get to Koh Tao is by airplane. Bangkok Airways operates a large number of flights per day from Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hong Kong, or Singapore to Samui International Airport. Once you arrive at Samui, you have several choices available to reach the island, either by Lomprayah Catamaran via Koh Phangan, or boat services from Songserm Travel Co., Ltd. Another convenient way from Bangkok to Koh Tao is to buy a package from Lomprayah which will provide you with an air-conditioned coach to Chumphon, and then transfer you to the Lomprayah Catamaran which takes you onward to Koh Tao. You can choose a mini bus service which departs Khaosan Road in Bangkok every night to the pier in Chumphon, then use Lomprayah Cantamaran service.

Overnight

Despite it’s small size, a wide range of accommodation is available on Koh Tao. Rates from internet bookings start at 400 Baht and increase up to 6,000 Baht. More resorts with highly luxurious rooms are now being added to the island. For a full list of hotels & resorts near the Khao Takiab beach please visit; www.tropicalmagazine.info/kohtao

Koh Phangan

Mention Phangan Island, and it can’t be helped that the first image to spring to mind are the long lasting nights of moon-related parties. Because Phangan’s main claims to fame are the notorious “Full Moon Parties,” “Half Moon Festivals,” “Black Moon Events,” and many more parties that are attended by hip people from all over the world.

have travelled to other nearby islands like Phangan Island, which has now also become a popular tourist destination in its own right. It has been called the Gulf of Thailand’s second heaven for holidaymakers. Phangan Island, like Samui, is an administrative district of Surat Thani Province. Its size and geography are quite similar to Samui.

In short, it is a paradise island for party animals. At twilight, small tables are lined up along the beach and thousands of lamps are lit. As the evening progresses, the beach explodes into a dancing frenzy. There is something for everyone here: trance, techno, drum and bass, commercial dance and reggae. You can have the time of your life, as you dance till dawn.

When you first step off the ship into this fascinating destination of Koh Phangan, you will find the port town is packed with crowded guest houses, restaurants, and all kinds of shops on many narrow streets. The majority of the population seem to be young foreigners, with a very cool and casual style of dress. It is really mind-blowing for those who go there for the first time. It gives you a sense of living in an alternative community, where people are ultra relaxed. They live their lives unconditionally, which in this case is very close to meaning “doing nothing”, just enjoying each moment of life. Some are obviously here to counter balance for all the serious things they normally have to do and deal with in the busy business world outside.

For tourists who don’t enjoy this kind of party, there are plenty of other beautiful beaches awaiting them. The island is still pure and unspoiled with natural coconut trees, white powdery sand beaches and a green turquoise sea. Apart from the gorgeous beaches, Koh Phangan has many other attractions like lakes, waterfalls, and local cultural sites, as well as trekking activities in the jungles and hilly areas. Since Samui Island has become a popular tourist destination it is quite crowded these days, tourists who want to find quieter places and beaches that are more peaceful

46

The native people in Koh Pha-ngan live an easy, worry-free lifestyle. Traditionally they grew coconuts and fished, but many of them have turned to making their living through the tourism industry by working in hotels, restaurants, or in the transport business.

47

Get there Getting to Koh Phangan is very similar to Koh Tao and seems to be even less effort via Bangkok Airways flights to Samui direct from Bangkok, some other major cities in Thailand and the region (check www.bangkokair.com for flight schedule.) From Samui, Lomprayah Catamaran and Songserm Travel both provide boat services to Koh Tao which normally make a brief stop at Koh Phangan, and it takes a blink of an eye at only twenty minutes from Samui to Phangan’s shore. Lompraya also provides optional transportation from Bangkok by air-conditioned coach to Chumphon, and then transfers you to the catamaran to Samui via Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. Check for schedule at www.lomprayah.com.

H a a d Rin Beach

You can spend a few bucks to several thousand Thai Baht per night on accommodation to suit your own style or personal budget on Phangan Island. Since the island has been quickly developed to host overflow tourists from its sister island Samui, Phangan also attracts outside investors to build some ‘star’ rated resorts on several beaches.

It is the most popular beach on Koh Phangan where the famous Full Moon Party takes place every month. It’s about 12 kilometres from the town of Thongsala. Actually, it consists of two beaches, one on each side of Cape Rin, in the south-eastern corner of the island. The east side has a better beach, which is good for swimming as well as snorkelling along the coral reefs at both ends of the beach, while the west side has a greater selection of bungalows.

Th o n g Nai Pan Yai and Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach

On the northeast coast of Koh Phangan, if you travel about 13 kilometres from Baan Tai Village, you will find these two wide and beautiful unspoiled beaches at the end of the rough dirt trail through the jungle.

S a l a d Beach

Salad Beach features about 800 meters of white sandy shoreline, abundant with shallow-water coral reefs, which start from Haad Tien. The beach is ideal for swimming as well as snorkelling. There are many residences available. If you are not very certain where to start looking for a place to stay, just walk around.

Ya o B each

The semicircular beach stretches into thick coconut trees, under which lovely bungalows offer a quiet, clean, relaxing and friendly atmosphere. There is also a coral reef for diving and snorkelling. The beach, located on the western side of the island, is the most beautiful, second only to Haad Rin. However, this beach is more peaceful than Haad Rin. Many competitive services and facilities have sprung up along the beach to welcome the number of tourists that is increasing day by day.

Khao Lak

Khao Lak, a resort town in Phang Nga Province, has today fully recovered from the tragic event of Tsunami five years ago. Now all coastal areas have been improved, providing a better landscape and more safety. Discerning travellers are being welcomed, usually having a relaxed time sunbathing along the white sand beaches, or wearing colourful sexy swimsuits and walking hand in hand with a loved one. It’s great to have a vacation by the azure sea; warm sun, warm sea and white sand are all you can feel. It’s so wonderful to think of the people still stuck in the temperate zone completely envious of you. Khao Lak’s long shoreline includes several beaches, each with its own distinctive character. Bang Sak Beach has a very gradual slope into the sea with a large shallow area so you can fully enjoy your bathing there. The nearby beach is Laem Pakarang (Coral Cape), is where you can see dead corals shattered in a long line under the sea. Laem Pakarang is famous for its unspoiled beautiful coral and also the best viewpoint to see flocks of sea birds living along the beach.

50

Only five kilometres from Laem Pakarang is Kheuk Khak Beach (Beach of Enjoyment) where you can rest on the wide expanse of soft white sand and feel the enjoyment. Although the word “Kheuk Khak” in Thai implies liveliness and noise, the beach belies its name with a serene and tranquil atmosphere. It is perfect for people who wish to spend their vacation peacefully with their lover or family. One of the most popular beaches of Khao Lak, Bang Nean Beach, where you can easily find an array of restaurants, convenience stores, tourist centres, and many other facilities along the beach. Within a short walk is Nang Thong Beach, the beach that has many inland curves or small bays. Various styles of accommodation such as Bali style or local Thai style are ubiquitous along the beach. One of the most outstanding things is that guesthouses are mostly built in the valley of mountains, allowing you to enjoy a breathtaking view of the Andaman Sea stretching as far as your eyes can see. If you drive past Khao Lak National Park, you will then see a junction. To the right leads to Khao Lak Beach, the most famous and beautiful beach of the province. Its sand is very fine and clean, serene, and not too sloped, suitable for swimming. Khao Lak Beach is not too long, making it an ideal hideaway for discerning travellers who feel like they are happy hiding with family on a personal beach.

Sights & activities: Khao Lam Pi-Thai Muang National Park

Certainly, you will be amazed at the beautiful Thai Muang Beach, the longest beach of Phang Nga that stretches as long as 13 kilometres along the highway. Thai Muang Beach is the most important beach for the lives of sea turtles. During November to February, there will be a number of sea turtles coming from the sea to lay their eggs. So, don’t miss the chance to see them while they are laying their eggs on the beach. For the month of March, it’s the time for concerned humans to help release and guide the newly hatched juvenile turtles into the sea.

Similan Islands National Park

Besides the many white sandy beaches that surround every island, beneath the pristine seawater of the Similan lies a complex of colourful marine creatures and coral reefs. The beautiful underwater scenes mark Similan as one of the most exceptional diving spots on earth.

Air-conditioned buses are also available from Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal on Barommarajachonni Road.

Overnight A wide range of accommodation can be selected to match your own style. Most of the resorts are set adjacent to the beach or on the mountain slope, providing a wide angle/panoramic view of the sea. Room rates range from ‘twenty something’ up to around 500 US dollars for the star rated hotels. Check the full list of hotels and resorts in Khao Lak at www. tropicalmagazine.info/khaolak

Repeat visitors will find that they may have the urge to escape to some nearby locales where the crowds are fewer. There are many small islands located near Phuket that are worth exploring for a day away from the big island. One among them is Koh Racha. Koh Racha comprises Racha Yai Island and Racha Noi Island. Racha Yai, the main island is a dream destination for honeymooners looking to spend some romantic moments on an island with pristine sandy beaches. Before it became a marine national park in 1974, the island was abandoned for 26 years after the British government, which ruled the Malay Peninsula at that time, received permission from the Thai government to arrest the pirates. In 1982, the island made headlines when UNESCO declared it as an ASEAN Heritage Park and Reserve. Koh Lan Island Patt aya’s Reachable Hideaway T

his morning, I packed my bag without haste and got ready for my weekend destination. It’s not too far, only 150 kilometers from Bangkok, and takes no more than 2 hours to arrive at Balihai Cape in Pattaya. Even late morning like this, Pattaya City is still in its groggy state after another long night of entertaining people. Some other Asian tourists and I are here and waiting to board our boat to our destination, Koh Lan. Koh Lan is looming larger in my eyes. On the 7.5kilometer boat trip from Balihai Pier, I could feel myself gradually being surrounded by the fresh air while the distance to the mainland behind is slowly growing further and further. For a speedier alternative tourists can take a speedboat which takes only about 10 minutes, but for the more economic fare, a public boat ride costs only 20150 Baht, and takes about 40 minutes. People on Koh Lan have been living on this island for generations, earning from products in farms, orchards, and fisheries. Names of many places on the island today are evidence of these occupations – Tha Ban Thuk (Loading Pier), Tha Rai (Farm Pier), Tha Taling Chan (High Shore Pier) – which once were used for loading products and shipping them to markets on the mainland. In the past, the residents of Koh Lan were rich and

well-to-do people. Pirates once raided the island and got many valuables at the time. However, with the long distance from the mainland and the inconvenience of transportation, the government decided to abolish its sub-district status. With only one village left on the island, it was later transferred to the administration of Pattaya City. I arrive on Koh Lan at Tha Na Ban (Na Ban Pier). Being the first passenger to hop off the boat, I turn back and take some photos of the other tourists who are mostly foreigners. Not far from the point where I’m standing on the left is Lareena Resort, the place where I would stay during the trip. After leaving my baggage there, I began to explore the island. To wander around Koh Lan is easy with several choices. A minibus costs from 20-30 Baht, motorcycle-taxi charges from 20-50 Baht, depending on the distance, or you could find a motorcycle rental at 300-400 Baht a day. Some tourists may bring along their own mountain bike to the island if the wish. I started from the highest point on Koh Lan where a Buddhist’s abbey is located. From this point, the view of Ta Waen Beach below is scenic. On top of the hill, there is a replica of Buddha’s footprint. The legend said that on

61

there used to be a big hole located nearby, many villagers went down to explore but none of them returned. I even went to the point mentioned in the story and found the vice-abbot there and he said this point is the passage of the Naga. Nowadays, the hole has been closed with some spells and a pile of stones. Down from the abbey, I turn left to Ta Waen Beach. With its white soft sand shore, the beach is probably the most popular one on the island. The curved beach lines 750 meters and is the longest beach on the island. The whiteness of the sand sharply contrasts with the color of the clear blue sky above sea. The water is clear enough to see fish swimming underneath. Besides swimming, there are plenty of water activities like banana boats. What impresses me is that with the zoning of the area, some tourists can enjoy swimming while some others can drive a jet ski within the reserved area. Swimmers and divers can enjoy their activities whilst jet ski drivers can have their enjoyment without worry that they will harm other holiday makers on the beach.

Next from Ta Waen Beach is Thong Lang Beach. This beach is suitable for those who seek a calm and private environment. The main activity on this beach is snorkeling. A good spot for viewing the coral is at the end of beach, connecting to the preceding Ta Waen Beach. After resting at Thong Lang Beach for a while, I ride my motorcycle up on the steep hill to Samae Beach. I am thankful that all the roads on the island are well paved with bricks. Riding a motorcycle or driving an ATV car are both good alternatives to feeling the breeze and having plenty of fun. Right before I reach Samae Beach, I find a small passage that does not catch other tourist’s attention much. My bike climbed up the hill and found the wind farm at the other end. These windmills are used for generating power and they are especially suited to the wind’s speed in Thailand. This hill is another good spot to view the sunset on Koh Lan. From here, you can see beach umbrellas in various colors and multinational tourists enjoying themselves on Samae Beach below.

62

63

Samae Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, and is very popular among tourists from many countries as you can see from the signboards written in Russian and Mandarin along the 300-meter long beach. Samae Beach is convenient with many facilities. It’s the location of the tourist’s service center and also the local government offices. You can also see the sunset on this beach. Just next to Samae is Thien Beach. This 500-meter long beach is located on the west side of the island. Its unique character is its long bridge lying along the cliff to the white sand beach which is a popular spot where many tourists love to take their pictures. Thien Beach is equipped with water activities just like Ta Waen Beach but with a more peaceful environment. Besides swimming and sunbathing, tourists on this beach may love to try Thai massage, nail-painting, or hair weaving. Moreover, Koh Lan still has a small and quiet beach like Ta Yai Beach for tourists who prefer a more quiet and private environment, or Nuan Beach where many choices of activities await visitors.

64

Most foreigners usually have only a day trip on Koh Lan as it’s not so far away from Pattaya, while many Thai tourists loves to spend a night on the island which would give them a totally different experience from the nightlife in Pattaya. After an exhausting week at work, many may dream of crystal clear water and white sand beaches on the Andaman’s islands but only a few people would know that the dream is well within reach. With the same driving hours as from your home to the office, Koh Lan would be a perfect place to recharge your batteries with its scenic seascape, plenty of fun land and water activities, on an inexpensive budget. For the above reasons, I would confidently say that Koh Lan is one of the very best weekend destinations for the urbanite.

Q&A Itthiphol Kunplome The New-Generation Executive

As Role of Pattaya City’s Mayor

After the accomplishment of a masters degree in Law from the USA in 1997, Itthiphol Kunplome, a 24-year-old young man at that time, came back to Thailand to further his Ph. D. Program. With real determination at a young age to work for his native hometown and with his background as a member of a political family, Itthiphol decided to abandon his educational opportunity and turned himself towards a political career justifying to himself that he would work as a politician to serve his native city either with or without a doctoral degree. Â

68

Itthiphol has followed his dream on the political pathway by holding some significant positions both in local and national level including being a member of parliament, and a consultant to ministers. Until April 2008, he had competed for the position of Mayor of Pattaya City and had won the election. Tropical Inspired Travel Magazine had a chance to talk with Itthiphol, the Mayor of Pattaya and acquired a perception of the 35-year-old executive towards tourism in the famous tourist resort city of Pattaya.

A

Please tell us about the binding relationship between yourself and Pattaya City. This feeling of binding started from when I was born and childhood as I am a native of Chonburi. I was born and grew up in Sriracha which is near the sea. I consider all the sea coast of Chonburi Province as my native town and I feel for it. As far as Pattaya is concerned, I knew the area from when I was very young. I loved traveling to Pattaya with my family at the time of the old port located in South Pattaya, having food and eating Foremost Ice-cream at the Boat Shop, which was the only ice cream shop at that time, 30 years ago. So, I have been bonding with Pattaya from that time and I consider Pattaya as a beach city with many lively foreign tourists. But early in my working career, I wasn’t expecting to come to work in Pattaya as I had worked as member of parliament for the whole province including Pattaya, therefore, the feeling of bond exists very strongly. Later after being a ministers consultant in various ministries, I became the Mayor of Pattaya City. As I am a citizen of Chonburi province, I consider Pattaya as the main economic hub for the province and the national level for attracting tourists and bringing income in. For this point, I think if we promote Pattaya well, it helps promote Chonburi and Thailand as well. So, I feel very honoured to be the Mayor of Pattaya and I feel proud that I have a chance to serve the people, I also feel very proud in helping to create activities, attract tourists, initiate good projects that are beneficial to the people of Pattaya.

What is the ideal Pattaya in your opinion? The image, a bond, and ideology from when I was young, still hasn’t changed, I think that Pattaya is full of Tourists, long term expats, food stores which are franchises from abroad and the first ones in the Province, there are modern department stores, there are elegant hotels, there are exhibitions, and many forms of relaxations and comforts. When I experience and see it in reality from working in this area, it makes me think that my thoughts were only one part. When I work in this field, my point of view has changed by covering new things, by specifying new directions to develop Pattaya to be a leading tourist city with five-star levels of service and for the future my vision is it should be the city of water sports. If we talk about Pattaya, we should think about the coast and the sea more than exhibitions and modernity.I arrange for various activities to welcome tourists coming as families as these people would think of climate and sea as the main draws to this beautiful city. Therefore, we need to make tourists think that we have water sports, a clean and safe beach, and lots of comforts and amenities. Now we are working on installing wireless internet so that people can work or contact their family with ease. Now, we are starting

the initial phase; there is another part called WIFI ON THE BEACH with the cooperation of TOT. TOT sees the potential of Pattaya as a tourist city. We will be starting in North Pattaya to South Pattaya, the port of South Pattaya and we are installing wireless hubs along the beach in order for Pattaya to have the infrastructure to support all tourists including those with high bying power. Besides being a city of water sports, it can be the city for international conferences as well. This is to boost both touristm and revenue in Pattaya.

What do you suggest for tourists looking for alternative places of peace and privacy in Pattaya? Now we are working to improve the development both in facilities and landscape of Kho Lan. We would like to invite all readers and all Thais to visit Koh Lan which is a beautifully natural island. The way of life of villagers is simple. The residence is a local type. There has not been any elegant hotels, the beach is beautiful, the sand is white, the water is clear. Another place is Jom Thien Beach which is generally known as Dong Tan Beach, it will be developed into a beach without cars, there can be bicycles, motorcycles or walking only. It will be a peaceful beach and the tourists can sleep whilst sunbathing or reading privately without any distractions. Khao Pratamnak or called Kao Sor Tor Ror. Is the area around Krom Luang Chumporn Monument, in that area, the whole of Pattaya can be viewed 360 decrees; this place is ideal for tourists who love nature.

How do you assure security for tourists? In Pattaya, we specify measures of safety with high standards on the part of the whole beach of Pattaya including Kho Lan. We have established sub-police stations in Pattaya and on Koh Lan as well and the people living on Koh Lan know very well who are the tourists and who are the citizens. But there is some problems on the Pattaya side, in that it is hard to distinguish who are the tourists and who are the citizens. According to the statistics, Pattaya has never previously had serious crime. Now we have more officials taking care of safety with volunteer police patrols in the community with coordination between Pattaya policemen and Bang Lamung policemen by increasing motorcycle inspections to increasing safety and frequency in supervising more areas. For Koh Lan, developing on transportation and on safety as well. We transport by ship only by dividing the fast ships and transportation ships that come between Pattaya and Koh Lan by 8.5 kilometers. The travel by transportation ships takes about 40 minutes but in the fast ships it takes 20 minutes only. The Department of Waterways Transportation and the Office of

the Maritime Promotion Commission now join in and supervise and take care of tourists from the port to Pattaya. We now control the limited numbers of passengers as well.

Regarding Koh Lan, we have a club of entrepreneurs to support the transportation enterprises from motorcycles, mini-buses and ships to help supervise as well.

How is the environmental management?

We have divided it into two parts systematically that are on the beach and on Koh Lan but this is still not enough, especially that of the wastewater treatment system of Pattaya where we only control 70 %, and the rest 30 % is on the way. On Koh Lan, we have 2 small plants for treating wastewater and an on-going campaign for villagers to make ponds to catch lipids as well. Mostly rain water is used in Koh Lan as the tap water system is still not complete in all areas. With regard to waste on the island, we have vehicles to convey the waste to the Center for eradicating wastes. On Pattaya beach, we collect waste from the house to the center to eradicate. Now we are developing better systems than the past where we used land filling. About the environment, it is another of our visions to be managed in Pattaya and to make Pattaya become an international tourist spot and an attractive city by focusing on the development of natural resources and environment which people can participate in as well.

Pattaya in the past, at present, and in the future in your point of view. Comparing with 3 - 5 years ago, now Pattaya has started to change in a better way in all aspects both in various business sectors such as real estate, food stores, entertainment complexes, with more comfortable ways of transportation, reduced crime and now traveling can be done safely.

Would you like to say anything to tourists? I would like to say that Pattaya is the city on the beach which is beautiful and it is located near Bangkok. It has comfortable transportation, the price is not so high, it is safe and comfortable covering all aspects, especially relaxation with a natural climate and with a clear sea. We now have a wastewater treatment system which is standard and we have plans to treat wastewater completely within 5 years in order to make Pattaya become the most attractive tourist city for people all over the world.

among Thai people, hill tribes and Myanmar’s ethnic group of Mons.

Our first destination that we visited was the western province of Kanchanaburi using highway No. 323 with its beautiful and green mountainous road. Our first stop in Kanchanaburi was Sangkhlaburi District, which is considered the border district between Thailand and Myanmar. In the past, this area used to be a route for transferring troops of both countries.

On our first night, the caravan group stayed in the camp enjoying the cool weather of late winter at Khao Lam National Park. Apart from getting close to nature, the sunset disappearing under the waters surface is a very romantic scene. We imprinted this memorable scene into our memories and said good night to the dark. We had covered 396 kilometers on the first day.

A major tourist attraction in this town is the old half sunken temple located in the valley flooded by the Khao Lam Dam, Wat Wang Wiwekaram Temple . Then, the temple under the same name of Wat Wang Wiwekaram was moved to be positioned and rebuilt on the hillside. The monastery abbot Luang Pho Uttama is highly respected

On day 2 the group had to travel along the tough bumpy road heading to Tungyai Narasuan Wildlife Sanctuary passing Klongngu National Park. The scene along either side features fertile forests. The car moved us forward until we reached our destination of the day, the beautiful Huay Mae Kamin Waterfall.

Another place that can’t be missed when visiting this area is to experience the longest wooden bridge in Thailand – around 900 meters. The bridge is a popular place to see an unforgettable sunset or sunrise over the dam.

market that has a full of range and variety of products from Myanmar, Thailand and China. Those who look for jewellery, wood carving goods and many more will not be disappointed visiting this market.

After that the caravan crossed to Srisawat District by engine raft and then drove along highway No. 4041 where the vast land of Tungyar Naresuan is eternity to everyone eyes. It took 320 km before we reached our overnight destination, Suphanburi’s Phutoey National Park, which is 1,123 meters above sea level. Of course, the weather here is comfortably cool throughout the year.

On the fourth day, the Vigo Smart Caravan drove along the Myanmar borderline in the early morning via highway No. 105 to Mae Ramad District. We stopped to pay respect to the Burmese style marble Buddha Image at Donkaew Temple. Next, we made a visit to Thasongyang Temporary Camp for 50,000 Karen refugees who have lived in the camp for the last 14 years.

Early in the morning of the following day, we began the journey off-road along the foothills aiming to visit the Lauda Air shrine. This shrine was built to commemorate the air crash accident of Lauda air in 1991, where all 223 passengers and crew lost their lives.

The group moved on along the narrow road where some parts are under construction. We drove up and down the hills along the Moey River until we reached Mae Sarieng and furthered on to Obluang National Park of the northern Mae Hongson Province.

From Phutoey National Park, we drove through Uthai Thani’s Banrai district road to highway No. 1 heading to Nakhonsawan, Khampaengphet provinces. Then we took highway No. 105 to Maesod District of Tak Province. Here we visited Rimmoey Market, a flee market located by the Moey River adjacent to the Myanmar border. It is a lively

From Obluang National Park, we took highway No. 1088 and 1192 heading to Chiang Mai’s Maejam District. Geographically, the northern part of Thailand is a mountainous area. The forest along the way had an orange and brown shade, signaling the coming of summer time. From Maejam District, we turned right heading to Doi Inthanon National Park.

The temperature on top of the mountain in late January was still cold. The temperature was around 4-5 C. Doi Inthanon is still a favorite destination for tourists. The provided accommodations and tourist tents are well managed, hidden in the shady pine trees. The wonderful nearby attraction of Doi Inthanon National Park is Mae Ya Waterfall located south of the park. Mae Ya Waterfall is considered one of the country’s biggest water sources with a height of 280 meters and 30 story falls. On that night, the caravan team stayed in the national park before leaving to Mae Hongson Province the following morning. The route that we drove along is the old road passing through Mae U Kor, with its famous fields of Mexican Sunflowers blooming and covering the whole vast mountainous area during November and December in Khun Yuam District. Turning right at Khun Yuam, we made a visit to Thailand’s highest waterfall called Mae Surin Waterfall where the whole area is surrounded by high mountains. From highway No. 108, we connected with, No.1088 from Khun Yuam District heading to Mae Hongson town. The group stopped at Wat Jongkham and Wat Jong Klang located at Nong Jongkham public park. These two temples are built next to each other. The Jongkham temple is the first temple in Mae Hongson town built in the year 1797 in the Tai Yai architectural style.

Out from Mae Hongson town, we used Pang Ma Pa - Pai road where more a thousand sharp curves challenged our driving skills. Finally, we reached one of the country’s chic destinations of the present time, a small district of Pai, which has been becoming more popular among young domestic travelers and foreigners. In days gone by Pai District was just a car resting area for people traveling from Chiang Mai to Mae Hongson. Today, there are many resorts and other kinds of accommodations available for visitors. One of the most popular activities here is strolling around the local walking streets. Besides, there are several postcard shops and coffee corners where holidaymakers can drop by anytime they want. In late morning, we visited Yunan Village where ranges of their products were available for selections, for instance Chinese tea, preserved fruits and ornaments. However, it seemed that the highlight of this village is handmade swings that satisfy those who want to challenge their fear and excitement. This is just one fifth of the long journey around the borderline of Thailand where we could expose ourselves to be close to nature as much as we could. Not so often that we would have such a chance to do so. Even though some of the places we have been to several years ago, revisiting this time, they are still never ending charms that we can always feel and imprint into our memory again and again. Let’s travel around Thailand!

“Uncle” I asked one of the many pedal tricycles passing me to stop, so that they could take me to wander around Chiang Rai town, the northern most province of Thailand. Apart from a fascinating natural scene outside the city, the Chiang Rai town itself features many interesting places worth visiting. Without any need to rush, I chose the local tri-cycle to drift around the city, as I could be dropped off at any place I wanted. Chiang Rai is quite big city but not as busy as the city of neighbouring province of Chiang Mai. This means that people here do not have to face traffic jam problems, having far less vehicles on the streets. Northern cities are well recognized as the Lanna cultural heritage sites. So is Chiang Rai, as it owns several priceless old temples aged more than several hundred years. Those temples are beautifully decorated with local northern artistic styles. The most revered being King Mengrai’s stupa of Wat Ngammuang temple located at Atamnuay Road. The main significance of this stupa, apart from its beauty, is that it is the place where the replica of King Mengrai the Great is on display. I headed to Wat Phrasingha Temple located Tha Luang Road close to the old city hall. Entering this temple, I went to pay respect to the replica of Lord Buddha’s footprint, presumed

to have been built in the reign of King Mengrai. This temple was built at sometime between the years 1345 - 1399 in the reign of King Prom. The temple used to house one the most important and respected Buddhist Images of the north, Pra Singha. Furthermore, another graceful aspect of this temple is the main gate which was designed by the famous artist, Tawan Dutchanee, featuring the truths/elements of earth, water, wind and fire. The story was beautifully crafted/etched into the gate by the Chiang Rai craftsman. Next, I visited Wat Mingmuang Temple situated at Trirat Road. This temple is considered the ethnic Tai temple, with native name being Chang Moob temple. Not very far from Wat Mingmuang, I had the tri-cycle take me slowly past the city clock tower, which is considered the city’s landmark. The clock tower was designed by another northern famous artist, Chalermchai Kositpipat who is also the designer of the well-known Wat Rongkhun. This clock tower is built to commemorate Her Majesty the Queen’s birthday. From the ancient temples, I paused to pay respect to King Mengrai’s statue situated in the heart of the town. Some say that anyone who wants to make some wishes should offer him a boiled egg, as it is his favourite food. Then, all wishes would be granted.

My journey around the city of Chiang Rai was so enjoyable especially late in the month of February. The weather was nice and cool while the sky was so clear. I was thinking of Mae Fah Luang Botanical Garden which is full of plantations and collections of northern heritages. In the past, this place was a learning centre for the hill tribe youth. Today, it has become an art and cultural park, which covers a land area of 150 rais. The place is very tranquil and suitable for those who are looking for peace, who may want to visit the local trails and art pieces in the following days. Those who visit this place cannot miss entering ‘Hor Kam’ , the hall that houses valuable northern Lanna artifact collections like wooden Buddha Images, northern Buddhism ritual’s, related accessories and more. The building itself is built in local Lanna style. Hor Kam was built by Chiang Rai people to commemorate the 84th birthday of Somdej Ya ot Princess Mother in the year 1984. The general atmosphere of this cultural park is peaceful and shady, with several kinds of local trees along the narrow walkways connecting one place to another. Walking a little bit further on from Hor Kam, is ‘Hor Kam Noi’ another wooden teak hall to house a priceless painting, painted with powder colours upon teak board. Presumably, the painting is in the reign of King Rama 5, showing ways of life, costumes and Lanna cultures during the past hundred years.

80

From Hor Kam Noi, walking down south to through the herbal garden, there is a big low rise building. It is called ‘Hor Kaew’, another hall in the park to facilitate activities, for instance conferences, seminars or banquets. However, one part of the area is reserved for both rotated and permanent exhibitions. Mae Fah Luang Cultural Park is open to visitors daily, except for Mondays, open from 8am - 6pm. Those who appreciate antiques and ancient artefacts, Oob Kham Museum is a place that cannot be missed. It is located at Na Kai Road of Robwiang sub-district, next to the Den Ha wet market. This museum collects the lost valuable artefacts from the Lanna era, trying to return them all back to the motherland to be displayed in the museum for new generations to study their history and origins. Most of the ancient items are accessories used in the Lanna Prae Palace and Lanna Chiangmai Palace. Other highlights are the 120 year cloth piece from Mandalay, and of course the 200 year old golden throne. This museum is open daily from 9am -6pm. Visiting Chiang Rai, everyone should take time to journey on a riverboat along the provinces of the Kok River, which is 130 km’s in length. Those who are interested in this activity can rent a long-tail boat from the city pier and cruise along the river visiting ethnic communities or many other activities available along the river banks, such as the elephant camp. If time

allows, you can cruise further to Ban Tha Ton, the borderline district of Chiang Mai, which will take 4 hours. By the river bank, Wat Thampra is another interesting spot worth visiting. It is a temple hidden in a cave, where the monks conduct their Buddhist practices every day. Besides this, the cave was visited by King Prajadhipok. All visitors can also offer food to the monks here, when they are out in the early hours of the morning. Though Chiang Rai is not as busy as other northern towns, at night there are still some activities for tourists or local people to enjoy and chill out. For visitors, shopping before going home is a must. There are many places to buy local souvenirs like handicraft products, silk and weaving items. The most popular being the Chiang Rai night bazaar and Chiang Rai’s walking street. If talking about local products, the favourite souvenir seems to be a product made from ‘Kradard Sa’, paper made from paper mulberry and other plants, alongside other handmade items. For food, visitors are advised to shop at a local market called Talad Tedsaban where they can bring home typical chilli paste, fried pork skin, local sausages, and much more all at reasonable prices. These are most of the reasons that you should consider visiting Chiang Rai town, especially if you are already visiting this province. It has a happiness that you can actually feel, which will surely make you revisit this place.
