Australia is home to some of the oldest wineries in the world and Lindeman’s Wines is one of them. The winery was founded in 1843 by Henry Lindeman who planted the first vines in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales.

There in the rich soils of the Paterson River flats, he planted Riesling, Verdelho and Shiraz grape varieties. The original vineyard no longer exists, and the winery now has vineyards in South Australia (Barossa Valley and Coonawarra), in Padthaway and at Karadoc in Victoria, near Red Cliffs.

From humble beginnings in the Hunter Valley, Dr Lindeman laid a strong foundation for what has become one of the world’s most popular wines.

Their first wine to venture overseas was Lindeman’s Cawarra Claret. In 1858, it was exported to the United Kingdom. By 1862, ​Lindeman’s wines​ were being exhibited widely around the world and Lindeman’s Cawarra gained international recognition at the International Exhibition, London. The accolades and awards continued to follow and over the next 100 years, the global footprint grew significantly.

Awards & Accolades

In 1981, the winery’s premium range gained popularity when the 1980 Lindeman’s St George Cabernet Sauvignon won the coveted Jimmy Watson Trophy at the Melbourne Wine Show.

It was in the 1980s that the most well-known wine was created. Lindeman’s iconic Bin 65 Chardonnay was launched in Canada in 1985 in response to the popularity of its approachable and fruit-driven style of wines in the northern hemisphere. Following its success in Canada and the United States, it was then ‘brought home’ to Australia in 1991. Bin 65 Chardonnay captured the world’s adoration of Australian wine and pushed the popularity of the winery on an international scale. The Bin Series has since grown to incorporate 18 popular varieties. Today, Lindeman’s is enjoyed in over 100 countries around the world. The winery’s portfolio includes the iconic Lindeman’s Bin Series, the Gentleman’s Collection, Cawarra as well as regional wines from the Hunter Valley and Coonawarra wine region.
