Dear Friends and Colleagues,
The Trocaire College community is pleased to host you at this year’s annual signature event, Spring Soirée 2023. Now more than ever, your support is critical in helping Trocaire students build careers of achievement and lives of purpose.
What’s more, those careers are right here at home—many of the more than 1,000 students who choose to attend Trocaire come from within a 60-mile radius and primarily stay in the region after graduation. So not only is this event helping individuals—it’s also contributing to the skilled workforce our region needs to thrive. As we’ve seen over the past few years, we need compassionate, well-trained professionals on the frontlines more than ever before.
Trocaire offers one of the lowest private college tuition rates in the region, providing students an affordable, quality academic experience and degrees in high-demand fields. When they arrive at our doors, they are immediately surrounded with the wrap-around support they need to succeed in a warm and welcoming environment in the tradition of our Sisters of Mercy. At Trocaire, students’ success is central.
In addition to Trocaire’s high return on investment, most Trocaire students receive some form of financial aid and many still experience a significant gap as they try to fund their education. Many are heads of households, and many attend part-time because they are working and raising families.
Every dollar raised in net revenue from Spring Soirée directly supports students in the form of tuition assistance. Your sponsorship and generosity help close the gap in tuition for students in need of financial support to complete their degrees and change the trajectory of their lives. Your contributions are making a genuine and significant life-changing difference for individuals during these most tumultuous times.
On behalf of the entire student body, employees, leadership team, and Trustees at Trocaire College, thank you.
Sincerely,
Bassam M. Deeb, Ph.D. President

Dear Friends,
Good evening and welcome to Spring Soirée 2023, Trocaire College’s signature fundraising event. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I hope you enjoy this special evening! Festivities tonight focus on those standout stories that make the Trocaire College community a truly special place to serve.
We are proud to recognize an extraordinary organization in our community as the recipient of the Trocaire College President’s Award: the Sisters of Mercy. The Sisters of Mercy religious order was founded by Catherine McAuley in 1831 and their members have gone on to provide service in education, healthcare, pastoral ministry and social services around the world. The Sisters founded Trocaire College in June of 1958 when they received their original charter from the NYS State Board of Regents. On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the college’s founding, it is only fitting that we honor the contributions of the Sisters of Mercy in the Western New York region.
Our Distinguished Alumnus this evening, The Rev. Thomas J. Mitchell is a 1989 RN graduate. Thomas has served the college and community in many ways over his more than 50 years with Trocaire. Alumn, faculty member, Vice President of Academic Affairs, Director of Mission, Service & Campus Ministry, Professor of Philosophy are but some of the roles in which he has served. In addition to his work at Trocaire, Thomas served as an oncology nurse at the VA for 10 years. Father Thomas is currently the Priest in Charge at Christ Episcopal Church in Lockport.
The recipient of our Outstanding Student Award, Shabnam Hayatullah is a second semester Surgical Technology Student and Phi Theta Kappa nominee at Trocaire College. She maintains a 3.9 GPA and was named to the Dean’s list in the fall 2022. She expects to complete her AAS degree in May 2024. Shab is a 2022 graduate of Maryvale High School originally immigrating from Afghanistan at the age of two and settling in Chicago, North Carolina and then Albany before she came to Buffalo in 2015. She currently serves as Treasurer for the Surgical Technology Club in addition to working full time to support herself and her studies. She has served her fellow students by forming study groups to support her classmate’s success as well as her own. She has been recognized for her volunteer service by the Cheektowaga Police Department and named to the National Honor Society in High School.
We know that as you hear about the work of the college and its students, alumni and community supporters, you will be reminded of a simple and longstanding truth: Trocaire College is a place where lives are transformed, preparing graduates of choice to serve the needs of our community. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Lisa Kirisits, CPA Board Chair, Trocaire College

SISTERS OF MERCY
The Trocaire College President’s Award is presented to a person, group, organization, or corporation whose partnership with Trocaire College furthers the college’s mission, vision, and mercy values, and directly or indirectly supports current and future Trocaire College students and alumni.
The Sisters of Mercy religious order was founded by Catherine McAuley in 1831 and their members have gone on to provide service in education, healthcare, pastoral ministry and social services worldwide. The Sisters founded Trocaire College in June of 1958 when they received their original charter from the NYS State Board of Regents. On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the college’s founding, it is only fitting that we honor the contributions of the Sisters of Mercy in the Western New York region.
The Sisters of Mercy Community in Buffalo was founded on Feb. 11, 1858, when four Sisters of Mercy traveled from Rochester to Buffalo at the invitation of Bishop John Timon, CM. Today, the Sisters of Mercy and Mercy Associates of Buffalo are members of one large international community, The Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, after having come together in 2008 with sisters from Buffalo, Rochester, Erie, Pa., Pittsburgh, Pa., and the Philippines. In 1957, Mercy Sisters from Buffalo started the Mercy community in the Philippines. 2023 marks 165 years of service by this remarkable order of religious women in Western New York.
At the celebration in 2008 marking the occasion of 150 years of service by the Sisters of Mercy to the Diocese of Buffalo, Sister Nancy Hoff, compared 150 years of ministry by the Sisters of Mercy to a tapestry that was weaved thread by thread over the years. “Ministries such as hospitals, schools of nursing, long-term care facilities and educational institutions brought their own unique color to the design. God has worked through our imperfections and our loose threads and created a tapestry of Mercy that has made a difference in our diocese…”.
