I am delighted to welcome you to Voices of Innovative Practitioners, the culminating performance of the arts-based education research project: All I’s On Education: Imagination, Integration, Innovation.

It doesn’t seem long ago that a team composed of teachers, researchers, educational leaders, a research assistant, a futurist and an artist gathered at York University to imagine what this project could be. Since then we have worked together in 10 Ontario school boards, conceptualizing a pedagogical framework called “3i education” that supports both classroom teaching and teachers’ professional development. This concept frames not only this performance but also the forthcoming final report, website, and professional development guide.

Voices of Innovative Practitioners is an important event for all of us.

It is an opportunity to bear witness to the voices of practicing Ontario teachers. The stories you will hear tonight tell of the experiences that have shaped their understanding of “3i education” as well as their personal pedagogical signatures. You will learn about people who supported, taught, and influenced them. You will visit the places where they come from as well as the places where they have decided to stay. You will witness the wisdom and insight they bring into their classrooms as well as the value they give to every student they teach. Finally you will listen to the dreams that support them as they imagine fresh landscapes of learning.

Although the teachers wrote all of the material, my ED DRAA 3051 students have graciously supported the project by performing some of the stories.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION All I’s On Education: Imagination, Integration, Innovation is a research and professional development project that took place in 10 Ontario school boards in the 2014-2015 school year. Teachers, principals and researchers investigated how teaching could be enhanced by inventive, integrated pedagogy. Together, these teams developed inquiry projects that

integrated math, science and the arts (dance, drama, music, visual arts) with the support of technology. The 10 schools in the project represented a wide cross-section of Ontario education. They were urban, rural, suburban; French, English; public, Catholic; elementary, secondary; and included First Nations, Metis and Inuit students.

The focus was on imaginative, integrated and innovative inquiry – what we are now calling “3i education” – that helped teachers and students select and work artistically with common concepts, contexts, ideas, themes, issues and relationships found in various disciplines. The research and administrative teams supported and documented the process through which teachers collaborated and imagined new ways of integrating curriculum. As they experimented with various teaching methodologies, they found ways of weaving the arts and technology into the teaching/ learning dynamic.

“3i education” is a provocation to change, to continue a professional journey through new beginnings.

Teachers work individually and/or collaboratively to imagine inquiry projects that they might co-create with their students. Then, they explore various ways of integrating, including blending curriculum subjects/strands, combining classes and/or grades, incorporating technologies, and connecting to various communities. Finally, they reflect on the innovative qualities of their teaching encounters, and adapt their ongoing plans and practices accordingly.

TEACHERS Aaron Arndt Armstrong Public School, Lakehead District School Board

Aaron was born in Mississauga, Ontario.

Before pursuing teaching in the Thunder Bay area, he was a competitive speed skater and is now a cycling and outdoor enthusiast.

École Élémentaire Macphail Memorial Elementary School, Bluewater District School Board

Tyler Boyle is a French Immersion teacher. He is an artist, dancer, entertainer, motivational speaker and guidance counselor. He is also the founder and creative director of D.A.N.C.E.+ - an arts and character education initiative.

Brian Bartlett General Brock Public School, Greater Essex County District School Board

Brian earned his B.Ed. at the University of Windsor.

Before becoming a teacher he worked in his family’s construction business. He has loved teaching ever since his grade 5 teacher asked him to tutor his best friend during recess.

Bruna Borrelli-Girimonte St. Cornelius Catholic Elementary School, Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board

Bruna is a music specialist with degrees from McMaster University and The University of Western Ontario. Her passion for the arts and teaching is fulfilled not only in her daily interactions with her students but also through arts-based extra-curricular events.

Jessica Elizabeth Botticelli Madonna Catholic Secondary School, Toronto Catholic District School Board

Jessica teaches Chemistry, having earned degrees from York University and Canisius College. She has always been interested in how science and math impact technology and life. Before becoming a teacher, she worked in a pharmaceutical company.

Michele Coneybeare Archie Stouffer Elementary School, Trillium Lakelands District School Board

Michele is a hands-on teacher who loves to find new ways to motivate students to learn. She has taught all subjects from kindergarten to grade 6. She believes that developing relationships with her students and their families is crucial to student success.

Wendy Coward St. Cornelius Catholic Elementary School, DufferinPeel Catholic District School Board

Wendy has extensive experience in Special Education and Literacy.

Her educational focus is on promoting innovative changes in education to meet the needs of diverse learners.

Scott Davidson Runnymede Collegiate Institute, Toronto District School Board

Scott has taught a variety of subjects in schools across the GTA, as well as in London, England.

He has finally settled at Runnymede C.I., focusing on developing integrated curriculum for applied Grade 9 students.

Since graduating from OISE in 2008, Daniella has taught in various schools in the TDSB. Along with her colleague Scott Davidson, she has created and currently teaches in the Grade 9 STELL@R program.

Adam Finkbeiner Irma Coulson Public School, Halton District School Board

After eight years in municipal recreation, Adam decided to pursue his lifelong ambition to become a teacher and has never looked back. He particularly enjoys connecting with students across Halton DSB by coaching volleyball.

Having traveled extensively abroad, Celia brings crosscultural education to her Canadian students. She creates multi-dimensional learning experiences by incorporating artistic and social justice elements into her religion and special needs visual arts classrooms.

Megan Juenke Armstrong Public School, Lakehead District School Board

Megan grew up in the small northwestern Ontario town of Dryden. She completed her B.Ed. at Lakehead University and began teaching the following autumn as a grade 7/8 teacher in Armstrong, her home.

Charlie Glasspool École Élémentaire Macphail Memorial Elementary School, Bluewater District School Board

Charlie is a musician and music educator hailing from Vandeleur. He loves composing and creating with young musicians on a daily basis. He is the winner of the 2014 Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

Marquise Lamarche École Élémentaire La Fontaine, Conseil scolaire Viamonde

Marquise a enseignée les arts tout au long de sa carrière. Formée en musique et en langues, elle est allée au collège Sheridan. Son but c'est d'instaurer une passion chez les jeunes pour apprendre par l'entremise des arts.

Anne Grant

Anne has 30 years of experience as a teacher, instructional coach, and Vice-Principal. She spent many years teaching in the Intermediate division, specializing in math and visual arts. Anne is often amazed by her students’ creativity and big hearts.

Andrea moved to Canada from Buenos Aires at age 13. After receiving her B.Ed. with qualifications in Spanish and Visual Arts, she taught for a year in Italy. Andrea is currently the ACL for the Arts at Runnymede C.I.

Chris earned a B.A.Sc. in Child Studies, specializing in Exceptional Children.

She worked as a respite worker and then as an EA, transitioning students with ASD into the school system. Chris later completed her B.Ed. to stretch her understanding of ways to help children learn.

Laura Maunula Armstrong Public School, Lakehead District School Board

Laura grew up in northwestern Ontario and attended a small country school where she learned to appreciate the outdoors.

She always dreamed of becoming a kindergarten teacher and is currently enjoying her 3rd year in a kindergarten class.

Stephanie Molenda General Brock Public School, Greater Essex County District School Board

Stephanie earned an Hon. Psychology degree and graduated with a B.Ed. degree from the University of Windsor in 2001. That same year, she began her teaching career with the Greater Essex County DSB.

Kelly grew up in Grey County where she now teaches French Immersion.

She coaches volleyball and basketball, and is the lead teacher for Me2We. She aims to inspire her students to learn about and respect one another and the world around them.

Beth is a graduate from the University of Windsor and has previously worked for the Wellington Catholic DSB. She is very passionate about engaging her students with innovative and hands-on learning experiences in her classroom.

Alana was born and raised in Windsor, where she completed her B.A. and B.Ed. She finds nothing more rewarding than building connections and relationships with students and finds new fulfillment in her career on a daily basis.

Rose was born and raised in Windsor where she earned her B.A. and B.Ed. She is currently a Learning Support Services Teacher in the Windsor-Essex Catholic DSB. Rose strongly believes in lifelong learning and is passionate about social justice and Special Education.

Dino was born and raised in Tecumseh and currently teaches at his alma mater.

After graduating from the University of Windsor with a Music degree, Dino began teaching with the Windsor-Essex Catholic DSB. Dino is involved in the music ministry with his church and is an active musician.

Belinda Moretta St. Cornelius Catholic Elementary School, DufferinPeel Catholic District School Board

Belinda has worked for the Dufferin-Peel Catholic DSB for the past 12 years and is currently working towards her M.Ed. (part-time) at York University. As well as teaching, Belinda enjoys coaching and volunteering both in the school and in the community.

Virginia has taught in the Halton DSB for 8 years, where she was a French Immersion student. She has a media specialization and brings various media into her classroom. Virginia coaches, runs intramurals, and is active in We Take Action.

Amanda graduated from the University of Toronto and worked as a kinesiologist. After 8 months, she felt it was her calling to return to the classroom and pursue her dream of working with teenagers to help them realize their potential.

Erin is currently a Program Leader in Equity & Inclusive Education in the Halton DSB, after several years working as an intermediate teacher. She is engaged by critical pedagogy and social and environmental sustainability which she considers the heart and soul of public education.

Sandra est une francoontarienne. Elle est enseignante au primaire depuis 26 ans. Elle s’intéresse à l’apprentissage environnemental, en particulier le programme Éco-Écoles de l’Ontario. L’impact qu’elle a sur l’avenir de ses élèves fait d’elle une enseignante dévouée et passionnée.

RESEARCHERS Kathleen Gould Lundy Principal Investigator

Kathy is a teacher and author with 40 years of experience in public and pre-service teacher education. Her research lies in social justice, literacy and arts education.

Steve has taught in primary and secondary schools in inner city London and has affiliations with multiple universities and activist groups world-wide. He has published widely in science and technology education.

Assistant Stage Manager

Marc is a seconded faculty member from the Toronto DSB. He bridges research and practice by working with other teachers to support the growth of students' mathematical understandings.

Jafar Hussain

Belarie is Associate Professor of Theatre, York University. Her research focuses on issues of history, identity, and memory in Drama and Arts Education, and Theatre for Young Audiences. She specializes in explorations of Holocaust Education through the Fine Arts.

Co-Investigator

Jafar is a French Immersion teacher in the Toronto DSB and Ph.D. candidate at York University in French Studies with a concentration in teaching French as a Second Language. He is passionate about integrating technology into his teaching.

Naomi Norquay Co-Investigator

Naomi has taught in the Faculty of Education at York University since 1993.

Her current research engages the historic Black settlement in Grey County. Her teaching and research are embellished by her avid interest in the banjo. She is also an amateur ‘cellist.

Tina Rapke Collaborator

Tina is an Assistant Professor jointly appointed to the Faculties of Education and Science at York University. Her research interests include the learning and teaching of mathematics at all levels. She is especially interested in collaborating with teachers, mathematicians and research educators.

Beth is a 4th year Theatre Production student at York University with a focus on stage management.

She has a background in musical theatre, theatre for young audiences, opera, and straight plays.

Recently she worked as the stage manager for Oliver! at St. Andrew’s College, and Cloud 9 for Theatre@York.

Netta has worked in academia, education, publishing and the arts in Toronto, Cape Town and Cambridge. She completed an M.Phil. at the University of Cambridge in 2013.

Netta is a published writer, radio show host and volunteers in her community.

Registration and Special Programs Assistant

Tanveer Bhimani is a Special Program and Events assistant at York University. She has a B.A. Hon. (2005) from York University and a Diploma in Child Psychology from the Stratford Career Institute (2007).

Tania Senewiratne Graduate Assistant

Nicole Lee Artist and Administrative Assistant

Nicole is an artist, researcher, and teacher. She earned her M.Ed., B.F.A. Hon., and B.Ed. from York University, and engages in arts-based research on identity. Nicole is a Visual Arts and English teacher. She specializes in drawing, painting, and printmaking.

Tania worked for a Broadway producer in NYC for 10 years. She has also worked on over 30 productions on Broadway and internationally. She is the General Manager of Obsidian Theatre and an instructor in the theatre program at Ryerson University.

DRAMA STUDENTS

Edward Daranyi Stage Manager

Edward has served the Stratford Festival for 7 seasons as an assistant and associate director on all 4 stages. He has participated in casting and new play development and for the past 14 years has been the Stratford Festival’s resident teaching artist.

Sarah Bruckschwaiger Sarah is a writer, director, dramaturg and educator who has worked extensively at home and internationally. She is inspired

by Shakespeare for young audiences, puppets, and teachers who are not afraid to be daring.

Kaitlin Burns Kaitlin dreams of a future where the arts are woven into the curriculum seamlessly and where students are given the opportunity to express themselves and engage with their creative side.

Arthur Burrows A graduate of the University of Windsor's Acting Program, Arthur is interested in creating equitable classrooms through the arts. He has a passion for acting, directing, and student success.

Christina Chubb Christina has always dreamed of reaching youth through innovative teaching practices. Encouraging and supportive, she hopes to help students express themselves in new and

creative ways.

Angela Corapi Angela dreams of inspiring the minds of young adolescents in the school community to see the world differently in order to make it a better place in the future.

Megan Demelo Megan’s dream is to one day inspire students through the arts and teach them to find the beauty in everything.

Lauren Elcock In the future, Lauren hopes to bring dramatic arts to marginalized communities, particularly working with at-risk youth.

Cheryll Fortades Cheryll is in her final year at York University studying music and education.

Cheryll is dedicated to inspiring students to reach their full potential.

Sukaina Ibraheem Sukaina is an aspiring theatre deviser and educator in theatre. She is currently on the advisory board for the Paprika Festival 2016.

Alexandra Laforet Alexandra dreams of being part of a school community that makes every student feel safe and happy. She hopes to inspire students to pursue their dreams and achieve all they hope to accomplish.
