Welcome, dear friends and neighbors, to the fifth annual Binghamton Porchfest! Today we sing, we dance, we sip lemonade, and we take to the streets in celebration of summer in the Parlor City. Boy howdy, we sure do know how to celebrate! Binghamton Porchfest is a testament to this tight-knit community of ours. The Carousel Capital of the World. Home of the Twilight Zone. Birthplace of the spiedie. For one afternoon each August, hundreds of musicians and homeowners come together to volunteer their talents and time for the sheer sake of goodwill, community, and the boogie. What started as a glorified block party half a decade ago has grown into one of the biggest events in Broome County, and it’s all because we do this thing together. The first year, 50 bands performed on 20 porches. Today, there’s over 500 musicians performing in 163 bands, 53 host families, and thousands upon thousands of folks in the street dancing along. Who woulda thunk it?

Newcomers to our fair city might find this hard to believe, but just a few years ago a common refrain amongst locals and visitors alike was “there’s nothing to do here.” We knew they were full of something smelly, so we brought the Porchfest model to Binghamton as an act of defiance, an act of proving the naysayers wrong in the most public forum possible: our front yards. Five years in, and we’re proud
The growth of the university means new jobs and new students in town, more and more of whom are opting to stay after graduation and lay down roots of their own. New warehouses and the coming industrial hemp boon promise more jobs and more growth. Culturally, Binghamton has seen an influx in galleries, restaurants, nightlife, and energy. Events like First Friday bring locals and visitors down-

Once upon a time, we were known as the Valley of Opportunity. Well-paying blue-collar jobs abounded. Local industry gave back to its employees by building affordable homes and neighborhood resources like parks and carousels. For many a newcomer to the United States, Binghamton represented an attainable path to the American Dream. Then things changed. One by one, the giants that built this city disappeared, leaving behind them empty factories and fond memories of yesteryear. It is no secret that the decades have been unkind to Binghamton, but we’re on a hell of an upswing.

Our ability to do so rests on the enduring spirit and creativity of our local community. It is that community that has worked together to make an event like Binghamton Porchfest possible. We provide a framework, but it is all of you that make today so special: the performers, the hosts, the sponsors, and everybody that’s out enjoying the spectacle. So get out in the streets and dance with your neighbor. Buy some lemonade from the kids across the street. Jump on the trolley and sing “The Wheels on the Bus” a half-step off-key. Toot on a kazoo. frequently asked questions What is Binghamton Porchfest?
Binghamton Porchfest is a completely free, completely volunteer-driven music festival that takes place the last Sunday of every August throughout the Abel Bennett Historic Tract neighborhood in the heart of Binghamton’s West Side. Dozens of neighborhood residents offer up their porches (and stoops, and driveways, and yards) as impromptu stages, on which hundreds of musicians spend an afternoon playing all assortment of tunes and dirges for passersby. People dance. Kids hawk lemonade. Neighbors set up garage sales. It’s a real hoot. The residents of Ithaca, NY founded the very first Porchfest in 2007, and the model has since been independently adapted by hundreds of other towns and cities throughout North America. If you think Binghamton can party, be sure to head north an hour and check out the OG festival on September 22! Other nearby Porchfests take place in Rhinebeck (September), Cortland (August), Callicoon (August) and Trumansburg (July).
Who’s Abel Bennett?
Abel Bennett was Binghamton’s first mayor, a banker, and the owner of the Bennett Hotel in downtown Binghamton. In the latter part of his life, he parceled his farmland into what has become much of the West Side neighborhood.
What should I bring?
We suggest a folding chair or blanket, a bicycle or unicycle, sunscreen, sensible shoes, a cooler full of picnic supplies and refreshing beverages (no glass), some cash for tipping, bubbles, fanny-packs, outrageous costumes, and a healthy dose of wanderlust. Please 14

Is this a family-friendly event?
It sure is! Bring your kids, bring your in-laws! Leave Uncle Steve home. He knows why.
Is it dog friendly?
Friendly dogs on leashes are welcome to join in on the festivities! Please pick up their poop and be mindful of crowds.
Where do I park?
There is street parking throughout the majority of the festival footprint, however it usually fills up quickly and there will be an influx of pedestrians during Porchfest, so we suggest arriving early in the day and staying for the duration if you’re planning to park on the street. Free parking is available in Recreation Park, accessible from both Beethoven St. and Laurel Ave. We request that able-bodied attendees avoid parking in the festival epicenter so that parking will be available for performers and those with accessibility issues. Don’t be a dummy, if you block somebody’s driveway you will be towed.
Is there a shuttle?
We’re very excited to introduce shuttle service to Porchfest this year! The BC Transit trolley and a handicap accessible shuttle will be offering complementary rides all day long! Check the map on page 19 for route and stops.
How walkable is the route?
Porchfest’s footprint is largely contained within a .25 sq. mile portion of the West Side neighborhood. It’s pretty traversable, less than a ten minute walk from corner to corner. Folks in
wheelchairs should note there is a slight incline to the neighborhood, especially in between Millard Ave. and Chestnut St.
Where can I get a bite to eat?
Porchfest is all about the block party atmosphere- we don’t really have official vendors or a vending village, and attendees are encouraged attendees to pack a picnic. Host locations are welcome to invite vendors to set up on private property at their discretion, so there’s more than a handful of options throughout the neighborhood to grab some lemonade or a hotdog. By and large we leave this up to individual homeowners to coordinate, however there are a few vending locations we’ve been privy to details about ahead of time: Rent-A-Chef Catering will be selling burgers, dogs, spiedies, and more outside of 14 Johnson; De Colores Cookies y Mas will be having an open house at 100 Leroy, with cookies, pastries, quiche, brownies, kolaches, and fresh bagels; That Coffee Place will be set up at 87 Leroy with hot coffee, iced coffee, cold brew, frozen blended coffee drinks and fruit smoothies; The Beef at 62 Leroy will have a full bar open inside and quick eats outside; Paul & Sons Pizza at 67 Leroy will be serving slices from noon all the way through to 9pm; Pizza Nia’s will be open up all day outside of Abel’s Pub at Seminary and Rotary. If you’re looking for something more substantial, we suggest checking out Nomikui Ramen (21 Main), Peterson’s Tavern (11 Main), or Thai Time (96 Front). Any and all neighborhood kids are strongly encouraged to set up lemonade stands. This is the true spirit of Porchfest, and we’re really enthusiastic about lemonade.

frequently asked questions Where can I get my drank on?

There is no alcohol vending at Binghamton Porchfest, however if you’re looking to get a quick cuppa, here’s a few neighborhood bars to wet your whistle at: Abel’s Pub (65 Rotary), The Beef (62 Leroy), The Belmar (95 Main), and Callahan’s (190 Main).
Is there merch for sale?
Our friends from Muckles Ink will be live-printing shirts, tanktops, and tote bags from noon-6pm outside of 35 Chestnut. We’ll be selling mugs, coozies and posters at the same location, as well as hosting kickstarter pickup and giving away kazoos.
What if it rains?
Why does everybody always insist on asking this? Porchfest is a rain or shine event, but even rain or shine events have their limitations. We’ve been lucky so far: let’s not talk about it unless we need to. In the event of severe weather, check out the Binghamton Porchfest facebook page for updates.
Where can I pee?
There are porta-johns scattered throughout the neighborhood: see map on page 39. Running-water facilities are available at Recreation Park, Abel’s Pub, and The Beef.
What streets are being closed?
We avoid street closures whenever possible, however there are a few areas of the neighborhood where we expect heavy pedestrian traffic, so from noon-7pm, the following blocks will be closed to vehicle traffic: Chestnut between Leroy and Lathrop, Johnson between Chestnut and Millard, Johnson between Laurel and Beethoven, Bennett between Laurel and Beethoven, Seminary in between Rotary and Kneeland, College in between Laurel and Clarke. Block residents may still enter and exit during these hours, but please use due diligence and be cautious of pedestrians.
What if there’s an emergency?
Our friends from the Binghamton Police Department will be patrolling the neighborhood all day and available in case of an emergency. They can be reached at 607-723-5321.
This sounds exhausting, but not exhausting enough. Can I wake up real early in the morning and participate in a footrace? Yes! The Empire Road Race Series is back at it this year with the Porchfest 10K and Harper’s 2-Person Relay. A portion of race proceeds will be donated to the Harper Stantz Memorial Scholarship. How can I support?
Donations to our host organization, the Gorgeous Washington Street Association, are greatly appreciated. GWSA is a volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) organization responsible for producing Binghamton Porchfest, promoting the monthly First Friday Art Walks, and coordinating local beautification

(folk) Andrew Kasab is an American fingerstyle guitarist, harp guitarist, and singer-songwriter. He is known for combining traditional and contemporary techniques, energetic performances, arrangements of modern works for the guitar and harp guitar, and he occasionally plays harmonica and ukulele. He has been performing for over 30 years at music halls, events, festivals, restaurants and other venues. (blues/rock) Hot Dogs & Gin is a Southern Tier band starring 11 year old Eamonn Hubert. Eamonn has several hundred shows under his belt, including appearances at the NYS Blues Festival, Scranton Cultural Center, Finger Lakes wineries/ breweries, and (recently) as a cast member of the National Broadway Tour of “School of Rock.” Eamonn is a multi-instrumentalist and loves playing with bandmates Doug Hubert (Dad), Gordon Gottlieb, and Steve Shimer. The band normally plays covers of classic rock and blues tunes that feature Eamonn’s talents on electric guitar. At Porchfest, the band will be playing similar tunes in a more acoustic fashion...with the occasional electric guitar and, perhaps, Eamonn on the fiddle or other instruments. 79 Riverside, 130-230

(rock/pop) Current lead vocalist of local hard rock band O.C.D., fill in vocalist for AC/DC tribute band Halfway to Hell and former lead vocalist/guitarist for I’m Sorry, Dave. Huetensil (Hugh Wygmans) is primarily a power pop musician with a hard edge and an indie singer/ songwriter ethic. As Huetensil and as the frontman for the progressive rock band Question of Honour, he’s been heard on over 100 radio stations in eight countries. OFA’s Making the Band
(rock) Making the Band is a group of Owego Free Academy student
musicians. This group was formed in August 2007 and since then has developed a large following of fans who enjoy supporting the efforts of these young musicians. MTB performs a sampling of both well-known and upcoming rock, pop, and indie artists. Making the Band is a training experience for high school students to learn to perform popular music outside the walls of a concert hall. OFA is the first school in the Southern Tier to sponsor a group like this and MTB has quickly become one of the premier ensembles at the school. (folk) Next To Kin is an original roots rock band from Tioga County NY. The band is made up of Ryan Cirbus on the bass, his sister, Mallory Evans on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, their friend (and everybody knows it) Mary Tewksbury on lead guitar and vocals as well as newly appointed kin, Shaun Andrews on drums – Mallory doesn’t know him that well but he seems okay. The band released their first full length studio album, Kindergarten, in May of 2017. The album features 11 original songs for every mood. Ron Gauthier: Songs We all Know
(rock) Hi, I’m Ron Gauthier, Songs We All Know. I started singing in high school rock bands in the 70’s, and picked up guitar in college. Once working, and back home in Cortland, I formed a blues band, Crosscut, in ‘86, playing lead guitar and singing; we played bars from the old Octagon Inn in Glen Aubry to the Otisco Tavern for a steady 3 years. I then joined Black Jack, a popular Binghamton country band, as a rhythm player and singer during the line dancing craze. That band was fun, but too busy to fit with family and work, so I quit gigging for a while. The bug hit again a decade ago, and I started going out again, just me, my guitar, and songs I love from

(country/rock) Sydney Rose Pabst is an 11-year-old performer who has performed with the Tri-Cities Opera, EPAC, and Schorr Family Firehouse Stage. She also has a recurring role
performing the National Anthem for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies during the 2019 season. On the side, she performs with her step-father, Mike Whittemore. Sydney sings a range of classic and modern hits and has started writing her own music. (rock) The most common question we get, or that any indie band gets, is “what kind of music do you play?” The most interesting description we’ve heard thus far is “prog grunge.” We like to think of ourselves as a rock and roll band, first and foremost. “Rock and Roll family” is our style, as we are two father and son duos. (blues/folk/rock) Bringing together elements of folk sensibilities, thoughtful lyricism and a punk rock attitude, Tom Jolu is the manifestation of singer/songwriter Tom Lewis’s diverse talents. Born out of a decade of playing punk rock clubs, dive bars and basements, Tom Jolu builds on the legacy of multi-instrumentalist songwriters such as Conor Oberst, Iron & Wine, Elliott Smith and Ben Folds, crafting songs that are both simple to sing along with but layered in complexity. (world) Unity Group is an exciting, eclectic world music ensemble that has captivated audiences of all ages with its colorful, dynamic performances. UG blends contemporary American improvisation with rhythms and melodies from around the world, including the Caribbean, West Africa, the Mid-East, Australia, and Asia. To add depth to the music, the band’s musicians play many unusual and exotic instruments, such as Trinidad steel pans, African drums, and Australian didgeridoos. The unique result is a passionate, energetic music filled with spirit and celebration. Over the last year they’ve honed their sound into a hard hitting post-hardcore, emo, grunge fortress pulling from the ‘80s, ‘90s, and early 2000s. With influences ranging from Thrice to Cindy Lauper, Nirvana to Brand New, Backstreet Boys to The Cure, Yard Party brings a fresh yet familiar feel to the table.
