FAMOUS AMERICAN FESTIVALS Summer 2022 edition of TRIPinfo’s Quarterly Digital Issue is Famous American Festivals — 72 great USA festivals or events — unique experiences for your group’s getaway, reunion or tour. Since 2004 TRIPinfo gladly supports the International Festivals & Events Association, the premier association Supporting & Enabling Festival & Event Professionals Worldwide. The IFEA team is led by CEO Steven Schmader. Their 65th Convention, Expo & Retreat is in McAllen, Texas, September 2022. Basketball founder James Naismith descendent Helen Naismith assembled a collection of images + history + recipes, and chose a young publisher just out of college to publish 100 Famous American Festivals & Their Foods. I learned a lot publishing that book! And great festivals have intrigued me ever since. The TRIPinfo database launched soon after, the foundation of our 3 digital reference products, includes 2,800+ USA Festivals, down only a few hundred after 2 years of pandemic! Those included here are across all 50 USA states. These Famous American Festivals have survived the test of time! Average Year Founded: 1952 Average Year Founded adds all our 72 festival founded years together and divides by the number of Famous Festivals. Interestingly, 1952 is the year Dwight Eisenhower was elected President of the USA, The Today Show premieres on NBC, the US B-52 Stratofortress flies for the first time, and Puerto Rico becomes a selfgoverning commonwealth. It is also the birth year of Maureen Dowd, Bob Costas, Rex Tillerson, Christine Baranski, Mr. T, John Goodman, Patrick Swayze, and Susan Collins. Median Year Founded: 1957 Median Year Founded derives from sorting our 72 festivals into date order, and finding the one in the middle. There are 36 opened prior to and 36 after 1957 in our roster. In that year 22-year-old Elvis Presley buys Graceland in Memphis, TN for $100,000. The first nuclear-powered submarine, USS Nautilus, logs 60,000 nautical miles. The Civil Rights Act was enacted. The Mackinac Bridge opens to traffic connecting Michigan’s 2 peninsulas. The Boeing 707 Airliner flies for the first time. Denis Leary, Steve Harvey, Ray Romano, Donny Osmond, Melanie Griffith, and Caroline Kennedy are born. Mode of Year Founded: 1936 Mode of Year Founded is the date that appears most often here. In 1936, three Famous Festivals on our roster opened. The 1930s experienced the Great Depression, but Americans created more great Festivals than any other decade! In 1936 The Hoover Dam is completed, Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind publishes, and San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge opens. Alan Alda, Ursula Andress, Robert Redford, Wilt Chamberlain, and Mary Tyler Moore are born. We think you will find this collection of Iconic Festivals fun to introduce to your Groups. This issue is designed to be an ongoing, useful reference for group travel ideas. They are all great events to visit. Your groups will be entertained and culturally uplifted by these Famous American Festivals. And doesn’t that make traveling as a group the most fun?
