MAPPING GROUP GETAWAYS
This Winter 2023 edition of TRIPinfo’s Quarterly Digital Magazine is devoted to Mapping Group Getaways. In it you will find 60 USA destinations. Since introduced February 8, 2005, Google satellite-based maps are great to zoom in on roads – including pins to locate dining + shopping + other outlets. 3-D street views are also great! Maps in this issue serve a different purpose! In a small space, they show relative locations within states for great Group Getaways!
In fact, non-digital maps – as first appeared ~25,000 B.C. – are still very popular among users that want to understand the “big picture” of destination locations relative to major markets or state borders. The TRIPinfo USA Map is a good example. Tremendous, zoom-able technology available in last 15 years improves mapping capabilities, while complementing traditional maps.
Finally, many recall these Quarterly Magazines launched as print in 1993 – for a dozen segments of leisure group planners that all shared a need for planning reference. With it we created our own map library: 50 states, 83 destinations, the Southeast USA & USA. They are all printable online as PDFs, free for your use. This issue maps Group Getaways surviving the test of time!
Average Year Founded: 1797
Average Year Founded adds the years together and divides by the number of Group Getaway destinations. In 1797, John Adams is sworn in as the second President of the United States, and Thomas Jefferson became Vice President. Also in 1797, the first ship of the United States Navy, the frigate USS United States, is commissioned. And in Boston Harbor, the U.S. Navy frigate USS Constitution is launched to fight Barbary pirates off the coast of Tripoli.
Median Year Founded: 1822
Median Year Founded derives from sorting our 60 destinations into date founded order, and finding the one in the middle. There are 29 founded prior to or in 1822 in our roster, and 30 after. In 1822, James Monroe was President of the USA. The U.S. merges East Florida with part of West Florida to form the Florida Territory. And star #24 was added to the flag of the United States, representing Missouri which had been admitted on August 10, 1821.
Mode of Year Founded: 1821
Mode of Year Founded is the date that appears most often in our roster of numbers. In 1821, 3 Group Getaways were founded. Also in 1821 James Monroe was U.S. President, the U.S. buys Florida from Spain, and George Washington University and Amherst College are both founded.
We think you will find this a fun collection of Group Getaways! This issue is designed to be an ongoing, useful reference for group travel ideas. We hope our map collection - here and online at TRIPinfo.com – is helpful in discovering that many of these spots may be along your way! And don’t interesting, easy-to-access, detours and side trips make group travel memorable?
Mark Browning, PublisherESCORTING THE CURIOUS ON HERITAGE TRAVEL SINCE 1992
www.heritagetoursllc.com
Heritage Tours specializes in travel that emphasizes history, local culture, and heritage. “Edutravel – where seeing is understanding” is our mission, to show our travelers the wonders both man-made and natural of the world around us, and to provide value that people could not obtain traveling on their own.
This is a hallmark of our tours: providing speakers, guides, sites, experiences and information that make a difference. We create and escort group tours that are customized to the destination, timing, budget and content desired by the group leaders who are our clients. We have no pre-set departures or fixed-in-stone itineraries. We work with group leaders rather than with individual travelers. Occasionally, however, we create tours where the sponsors welcome the public to register in addition to the members of their organization.
Using Maps to Plan Group Getaways
Our GPS is with us everyday, giving directions and helping avoid traffic snarls. But when it comes to planning logistics and details for group trips, maps are handy tools – maybe even essential. They can do more that just get us from point A to point B.
If you are just beginning to look for the right destination for a trip with a group of friends or family, you can use a map to get ideas. TRIPinfo’s maps quickly show efficient routes using interstate highways and major roads. The maps identify cities by size and many points of interest: federal and state parks, national monuments, attractions, landmarks, mountains, lakes and rivers.
These map features may spark an interest in researching an area to find out if it is the right destination for the group. For example, if your group would like wide open spaces with panoramic views and maybe a lake for fishing
or watersports, the map shows how populous an area is by identifying the size of towns and roadways and providing information about the area’s natural characteristics.
Other TRIPinfo.com tools, like the tables and markets, will identify attractions, sports venues, group accommodations, event space and other amenities that are important to your group. This research may point to a place as being the best destination for your group, or the area may be perfect for a stop over during a longer road trip.
Once you have selected that great destination, you can use the map to plan logistics whether traveling together from the beginning or meeting during the trip.
A map helps you explore areas where you are traveling, maintain a reasonable travel schedule and avoid missteps. When you have the luxury of time during a road trip, you can use the map to identify and visit those must-see attractions that are close but just off the main route. The map will quickly get you back to your original route.
If your time is limited, you can use the map to plan which major roads and interstates provide the most direct route. Stay at hotels and dine in restaurants at the exits.
In this issue featuring Maps, we focus on travel to 60 great group getaway destinations, including large cities, medium and small markets plus beach and mountain communities. We identify efficient routes on high capacity roads, rivers, lakes, area attractions and historic landmarks to these 60 destinations across the nation.
To find out about other areas, visit TRIPinfo’s library of online maps. Use these maps as a tool to plan itineraries, print pdf versions as needed and share maps with members of your group.
Have a great TRIP!
