Welcome Back!

This summer has been a busy one for TRIO Student Support Services! If you have not been around too much this summer, the new school year brings several changes at Lone Star College.

TRIO SSS is now located in APA 200

We have a new TRIO Advisor Jasmine James (you’re going to love her!)

Lone Star College has a new Chancellor for the LSC system Mr. Mario K. Castillo, J.D.

About this summer…

We had a blast this summer! We took THREE college road trips: Texas Tech University, University of Houston, and the University of Texas. Students also visited the Holocaust Museum, Cirque de Symphonie an acrobatic performance in collaboration with the Houston Symphony, and we wrapped up the activities with our first annual TRIO SSS bootcamp. Students attended academic workshops such as financial literacy, time management, and emotional intelligence. There is no need to have FOMO, we have great events planned for the Fall as well. Be sure to stop by the office and grab a calendar of events.

We are excited to do life with you! Whether you are a new student or a continuing student, we are happy that you are a part of TRIO! Be sure to stop by and visit us in our new office APA 200.

Welcome Jasmine James TRIO SSS Advisor

Hi, my name is Jasmine James. I am from Houston and grew up in the Greater Houston area. I graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations.

In my free time, I love spending time with my family and friends. I also enjoy catching up on the latest movies, reading, and visiting new destinations I decided to join the TRIO team because I am a first generation student and understand the many challenges students can face while aiming to complete their academic journey. I am here to provide various resources, motivation, and support for students along their journey toward graduation and beyond.

Brian's Study Tips

1: Know you and how you learn. If you have trouble with the material, then it might help to try a different method to learn it.

2: Turn off distractions and/or set a spot to study

3: Find resources and/or talk with students who are taking the class, or who have already taken the class.

4: Join clubs related to your major as it reinforces your skills, connects you to students in the same field, and to professors who can help and advise you.

5: Take time for yourself to relax, don’t cram material for class or stress out before exams.

6: You will have trouble understanding something, and might fail an assignment. Take that as a chance to learn, and know it’s okay.

7: It’s better to start sooner than later. You will have trouble trying to ask about a problem at midnight before an assignment or test.

8: Ask questions! Ask your professors, your peers, and the tutors. Different perspectives will help you.

9: Try to fin out where exactly you are struggling if you are having trouble understanding something. It will help you find answers easier, and the tutors if you see one.

10: Teach/Tutor others, it really helps to reinforce your knowledge.

Know that you will struggle with classes, subjects, and these tips, and will need to find what works best for you and understand your flaws. We all procrastinate at least a little, and we all struggled and failed at something. But, that’s what makes you grow as a student and a person.
