TRIO Study Tip
Extending your time horizon
An individual's time horizon can be defined as how far they can look into their future and build a plan for it. In our childhoods, this horizon may only have been an hour or so: maybe to the end of a TV show or after eating dinner with family. This horizon can be so close because there are fewer tasks and goals for the child and more parameters put upon them. As we grow, it's only natural that the
horizon should be extended, giving us a better understanding of where we're going and what we need to do to get there.
However, college students can have challenges when it comes to their horizon, as this is a time period where it can become greatly distended. Without the proper skills, their own goals can become hazy, making it much more difficult to continue moving forward.
So how does one extend their horizon?
Well, the first step is quite a boring one, but it is extremely helpful. Using a calendar will help the student visualize their day, week, month, and quite possibly their year. To do this, though, they need to put everything in there. Class times, office hours, work shifts, therapy appointments, study sessions, lunch time, you name it. Anything that takes up time can be included. Going one step further, to help with extending your horizon, it is helpful to color-code each task. A Psychology class (and its subsequent office hours and study sessions) can be green, while an Economics class can be purple. Work shifts can be blue, while appointments can be yellow. By color coding your calendar, you can quickly scan the upcoming week and make note of any patterns or areas of concern. Do you spend more time on your Psychology class than your Economics class? Are your work shifts right in between two difficult appointments? In noting this, you can make changes that can help lessen stress. The only way to do this is to make sure your calendar is robust.
The next step in extending your horizon is to become more aware of time itself. Mark down what "time suckers" you have in your life. This can be TV, video games, a good book, anything that can make a quick 15-minute break turn into a twohour long diversion. Think of ways to bring yourself back into focus, before the time sucker even is thought about. By being forward looking and getting rid of things that can divert your attention, you're more certain to look further down the line.
Next, break down bigger projects or tasks into smaller steps. For example, if you have an essay due in two weeks, you should spend some time in advance of starting and write down all the steps that you will need to accomplish. This could be research, note taking, outlining, working with a librarian, and scheduling time
with the writing center to review a draft. Take out your calendar and mark these steps down; give yourself enough time to finish each, so that when the essay is finally due, you will be in good shape to hand it in.
Something else you can try, to make yourself more aware of time, is to have a gentle alarm go off every 15 minutes of work time. Using a free meditation app is highly suggested, as their alerts are often quiet, unalarming bells. By setting an alarm every 15 minutes, you're being reminded of time moving forward. This can help you get back on track with your work, by gently nudging you back into focus, as well as show you how much you can accomplish in a short span of time.
There are plenty of other ways to extend your time horizon, but these ones above are readily available to you right now.
