FROM OUR HEAD OF SCHOOL

THANKFUL! Dear Trinity Family, As I reflect on another year, I continue to be thankful for the many ways God has chosen to bless our school. Indeed, our outstanding faculty, staff, students, parents, and trustees all indicate tremendous favor. It is a real privilege to serve here.

this past school year saw many innovations on campus, including the addition of a unique course dedicated to the study of the Holocaust. Co-taught by Lucy Thrasher and Lisa Lawrence, this new elective was recognized by the Birmingham Holocaust Center for its innovative format and groundbreaking content. Historical studies and literature were combined in a cross-curricular approach to learning that in the future will be expanded into other subjects. Becky Miller, our outstanding upper school art teacher, offered another innovative approach to learning as she partnered with Auburn University and Kyser Properties to bring us the 121 Coosa Pop-Up Gallery in downtown Montgomery. Auburn University mentor professors and their protégés worked alongside Trinity art students as they not only created art, but also studied the process by which it is successfully exhibited. A new university/K-12 partnership was formed that we believe will be highly beneficial in future years.

as you may imagine, our students experienced tremendous success this year as well. Our swim team went to the state tournament, and our girls tennis team was the state runner-up. Charlie Lott won two track state championships, and our girls golf team won the first state championship in this sport in Trinity history. Also, as of this year, Trinity has gone five years without any fines or ejections, and will be honored later this summer by AHSAA for this tremendous distinction. We were especially proud of Mary Conley Teel as she was the Bryant-Jordan scholarship winner for our region, and also won the prestigious Jimmy Hitchcock Award. With this year’s Hitchcock Award, Trinity now holds the distinction of having more of these awards than any other school, public or private, in Montgomery. Additionally, Aubrey Grant and Miller Johnson were declared Speech and Debate All Americans, and Sydney Bassett was named Montgomery County Distinguished Young Woman. Collectively, and most importantly, our full student body succeeded in raising money through Change4Change this year to build a well in Zambia, putting into practice our Mission’s directive to “serve.”

trinity is a remarkable school because it is comprised of remarkable people. Thank you for being part of the Trinity Family, and for continuing to pray for us as we seek to offer the finest Christian education in the state. Remember to come “home” often!

Dr. Tami Shelley Retires from Trinity After 26 Years In the fall of 1991, Tami Shelley joined the faculty of Trinity Presbyterian School as a Kindergarten teacher. Over the next 26 years, she taught 5th and 3rd grades, ultimately becoming Trinity’s Lower School Principal in 2008. During her tenure, Tami’s leadership proved critical at a pivotal time in the history of Trinity, as she solidified an unparalleled academic experience in Trinity’s Lower School. Wth great respect and a touch of sadness we announced that Dr. Shelley would officially retire from Trinity at the conclusion of the 20162017 school year. Dr. Shelley will continue her endeavors of growing and developing future educators as Assistant Professor and edTPA Coordinator at Huntingdon College beginning this Fall. Serving as Trinity’s Lower School Assistant Principal since 2013, Ms. Becky Faulkner will become the new Lower School Principal. Becky has been with Trinity since 1994 and served with distinction in a multitude of capacities. In addition to her years of experience, Becky’s talents and expertise as

Lower School Assistant Principal made her the logical and extremely qualified choice for this important position at Trinity. In addition, Mrs. Lindy Cadrette will join the Trinity family as the Lower School Assistant Principal. Some of you may remember Lindy, as she served as guidance counselor at Trinity from 1998-2000. She and Becky will work in tandem to provide perspective on ways to use creative teaching methods, classroom management, and parental involvement to increase student achievement—both academically and socially. Trinity School recently held a reception for Dr. Shelley in the Lower School Atrium, where faculty members and friends of Trinity stopped by to pay tribute to her. Trinity’s new Lower School Principal, Ms. Becky Faulkner, and the new Assistant Lower School Principal, Mrs. Lindy Cadrette, were also on hand to greet families of Trinity.

THE TRINITY FAMILY EXTENDS A HEARTY THANK YOU TO DR. SHELLEY FOR HER REMARKABLE CONTRIBUTION TO TRINITY SCHOOL. HER IMPRINT OF EXCELLENCE IS SECURELY STAMPED ON TRINITY AND WILL BE REMEMBERED AND VALUED FOR YEARS TO COME.

NEW CLASS OFFERING FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS

NEW HOLOCAUST STUDIES CLASS BEING OFFERED AT TRINITY A new Holocaust Studies Class is now being offered at Trinity School. Thrasher covers the historical aspects, while Lawrence teaches complementary literature.

Last year, Thrasher and Lawrence attended the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center’s (BHEC) “Teaching the Complexities of the Holocaust” fall workshop, where they discovered a common interest for the Holocaust. The excitement from the workshop, along with their fervent desire for student engagement in cross-curriculum pursuits, led to the idea of creating a Holocaust course. Because Trinity graduates are required to have a one-semester credit of humanities, they designed the course to fulfill this requirement. They approached the administration with the idea and were given the green light to create a course description to present to the Academic Committee.

City, and Lawrence attended Facing History and Ourselves: Holocaust and Human Behavior in Memphis, Tennessee. By being awarded the prestigious Alfred Lerner Fellowship by the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center and the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous, Thrasher attended the Summer Institute at Columbia University. Only twenty-eight participants were selected to attend, five from abroad and twenty-five from all across the United States. The conference included presentations from Lawrence Douglas, Professor of Law, Jurisprudence and Social Thought and author of The Right Wrong Man, who discussed the nuances of the Nuremberg Trials. Thrasher also attended sessions with Alexandra Zapruder, author/editor of Salvaged Pages, who discussed the diaries of Holocaust survivors, as well as a session with Holocaust survivor Roman Kent. Thrasher returned inspired from her newfound knowledge learned at the conference. “They were passionate educators who’s creativity was boundless. They freely shared ideas and strategies as well as their frustrations and roadblocks.”

While working through the class objectives, description, and curriculum, both teachers applied for and were each awarded a Friedman Scholarship for professional development. Thrasher attended the Summer Institute for Teachers in New York

Lawrence attended the “The Facing History” workshop in Memphis, which provided more than thirty unique teaching strategies focusing on the Holocaust. Facing History’s scope and sequence helps teach students empathy while also teaching content. The

Course Description

THE WORLD MUST KNOW— HOLOCAUST STUDIES During one of the classes this year, Irmgard Wilson, a native of Poland, survivor of WWII (not Holocaust), spoke to our class about her experiences in Poland and Germany during the war and her subsequent immigration to the U.S. in the 1950s.

This hybrid course provides the student with an in-depth study of the Holocaust focusing on decisions that led individuals, groups, and nations to

sequence begins with the individual and society to focus on one’s identity and how that influences behavior and decision- making. Next, the focus shifts to “we and they” and how human connections are made, but also what contributes to misunderstanding, stereotyping, and conflict. Then, the content of a case study teaches the specifics of the Holocaust to allow the student to confront the atrocities—“the choiceless choices.” Finally, the sequence looks at ways students can take what they learn and connect with issues today; students can explore what it means exercise their rights and responsibilities as citizens of a democracy to make a more humane and compassionate world. By approaching the Holocaust with this scope and sequence, students are led to understand civic responsibility and what could have happened had more people during the Holocaust exercised this responsibility. The Holocaust Studies course was unanimously approved and placed on the 2016-2017 course selection sheets for juniors and seniors. Both Thrasher and Lawrence implemented the skills and incorporated the information learned last summer into the classroom as they presented the Holocaust to students effectively.

The student will investigate the collaboration and complicity emphasizing tolerance, respecting the values, religion, heritage, and ethnicity of others, the danger of conformism, and the loss of self due to succumbing to mob mentality by allowing the student to consider the many factors and events that contributed to the Holocaust. The student will examine diverse literary interpretations including memoirs, fiction, drama, advertising/propaganda, and political writing. Students should expect an extensive and complex reading load.

Kindergartens Collaborate in Writing Workshop

TRINITY STUDENTS NAMED NATIONAL SPEECH AND DEBATE ASSOCIATION ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS Aubrey Grant and Miller Johnson were named National Speech and Debate Association Academic All-Americans. In order to receive the distinction of All-American, both Aubrey and Miller earned the degree of Superior Distinction (750 points), earned a GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent), received an ACT score of 27 or higher, or SAT combined score of either 1330 on 1600 scale or 2000 on 2400 scale, and demonstrated outstanding character and leadership. The top students in the country each year are named All Americans. The All American award is based on a combination of competitive and service points, of which no more than 25% of the point total can include service. In order to qualify, a student must have competed once at Nationals. Following the National Speech & Debate Tournament, the 25 students with the highest total points in our Honor Society receive this recognition.

The middle of the school year always provides signs of major growth for all students but none is more observable than the growth in reading and writing in our Kindergarten area. It is not unusual to see the students working in pairs as they share their own written words with each other. Fridays are now known as “Fabulous Friday Writing Workshop” days! They thoroughly enjoy using their iPads to video tape each other reading the stories they have written. You can see the ownership of learning and the pride in their work as they share and communicate with each other. One student was overheard saying, “Wow, I’ve never been an author before!”

MARKET DAY

Third Grade Entrepreneurs Sell Their Products on Market Day Trinity third graders completed their social studies unit of study on economics with a “Market Day.” After learning about producers, consumers, products, profit/loss, and supply & demand, the students created products to sell at the market. They researched their product to determine the supply and demand needs as well as how much to charge. In order to market their products, students created business cards and fliers on laptops. After

designing and making their products, the students brought them to school to sell at “Market Day.” There were bracelets, a photo booth, cookies, bookmarks, cupcakes, cardboard paintings, and even lava lamps and video games! The students used class money called “Star Bucks” that they earned for good behavior to purchase the goods. Third graders had several customers, including Head of School Kerry Palmer and many Trinity seniors.

Trinity’s Alabama Wax Museum was the culmination of the fourth graders’ yearlong study of Alabama history, including the lives of many Alabamians. Each fourth grader portrayed a famous person from Alabama, like Zelda Fitzgerald, Lurleen Wallace, Hank Williams, Hank Aaron, Tallulah Bankhead, Heather Whitestone, Martin Luther King Jr., and Emma Samson, just to name a few. Lower, middle, and upper school students enjoyed visiting the museum today and learning more about famous Alabamians!

They say, “The seeds of beautiful flowers are planted in kindergarten.” The kindergarten classes experienced the wonder of nature just steps from their indoor classroom as they spent time in the Trinity “KINDER-GARDEN.” They planted cottonseeds that were passed down from the fourth grade field trip to Old Alabama Town. They observed the plants and flowers they planted on February 2, 2017 and recorded what they saw in their garden journals. They heard the birds above and watched in amazement as a baby bird learned to fly with its mother. Trinity’s “outdoor classroom” always proves to be a beautiful time of learning and wonder!

Fourth Grade Jumps into

EACH YEAR AT TRINITY, FOURTH GRADERS EXPERIENCE WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO LIVE AS A PIONEER. They visit Old Alabama Town near downtown Montgomery and experience what it was like to live as a pioneer. In addition, the students dress as pioneers, while fourth grade teachers produce a hands-on learning environment where the students compare and contrast life in the early 1800’s to their own lives, i.e. education in a one room schoolhouse, entertainment, living conditions, food, transportation, and clothing. The students participated in several “pioneer” activities. They read from the McGuffey’s Fourth Reader, used slates instead of paper, had a spelling bee, used the Bible as a textbook for several different subjects, learned about music, played games, learned to square dance, jumped rope before school waiting for the teacher to ring the bell, had special pioneer treats, and cleaned cotton.

But as he warmed up to face UMS Wright, he tripped and injured his wrist. After the trainer pronounced it “not broken,” Thomas said, “I can play.” The wrist was taped and with a loaner wrap, Treadwell dispatched his opponent in straight sets to capture the State Championship at his line! After arriving back in Montgomery, his mother ran him by the doctor’s office just to check it out. The result: Thomas had just won the State Championship with a broken wrist! CORE BELIEFS

AN EDUCATION AS UNIQUE AS YOUR CHILD The Board believes that God is the source of all truth and wisdom, and that our understanding of the world around us is most fully realized through this fundamental assumption. The Board believes that academic excellence must include a spiritual component, which must be based on the tenants of the Christian faith, and that academic excellence cannot be achieved without this acknowledgement. The Board believes that God will be glorified by producing students who can engage, serve, and lead in their communities in a manner that honors Him.
