Trinity Drama

Drama at Trinity is ambitious, inclusive and creative: students across all year groups come together to create, perform and support one another, developing skills in acting, writing, directing, and in lighting, sound and costume. All Lower School students study Drama, with nearly a third continuing to GCSE and a small number to A Level. With three major productions a year, thriving clubs and expert teachers working alongside industry professionals, Drama at Trinity goes beyond the curriculum, building confidence and excellence both onstage and behind the scenes.
Lucy Robinson, Director of Drama
We stage three major productions annually. Our ambitious whole-school autumn show alternates between plays and musicals, involving over 100 students from Junior Year to Upper Sixth. They work together to entertain audiences in the run up to Christmas, supported by a skilled student technical team and orchestra. Last year the Concert Hall became Narnia for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe co-written by an A Level Drama student and our Head of Productions. This year we look forward to Guys and Dolls, with students codirecting and supporting specialist staff in hair and make-up.
Our summer production gives Lower School students (Year 6-8) centre stage. Recent performances include James and the Giant Peach, Alice and
Lord of the Flies, each with casts of 30 and imaginative set designs from video projections to trap doors!
In spring we alternate between Sixth Form and Middle School plays, tackling challenging works such as After Life, Medea, Holes and Private Peaceful to develop students’ knowledge of theatre beyond the curriculum. These smaller productions celebrate collaboration across year groups, both on stage and behind the scenes.
Alongside these, students showcase work through GCSE and A Level performances, and our annual Drama Showcase features monologues and small group pieces from scholars and LAMDA students.
Our popular LAMDA programme enables students to achieve internationally recognised awards, build acting technique, confidence and communication skills while higher levels contribute towards UCAS points. Last year, a remarkable 95% achieved distinctions under the guidance of our specialist teacher Miss Reeve.
Weekly clubs for all ages focus on invention, improvisation and teamwork, building self-belief while having fun. Younger clubs are often led by older students.
We regularly welcome industry professionals to develop students’ passion for theatre through workshops in stage combat, make-up, puppetry, improvisation and more. Our termly Backstage Platforms give insider perspectives; recent guests include theatre writer Rachel Wagstaff, Creative Director Maxine Doyle (Punchdrunk) and actors Dominic Semwanga and Sophie Evans.
Theatre trips are a highlight of Trinity Drama life, with students in every year visiting theatres annually. We run over 17 trips to London and beyond, inspiring students through varied genres and productions.
Students gain hands-on experience in lighting, sound, set and costume design, supported by our Theatre Technician and visiting designers. Skills are developed further in Technical Theatre Club, specialist workshops and backstage production roles.
We collaborate with local schools: our partnership with Rutherford School brings students with profound learning disabilities into A Level Drama lessons and productions, while partner primary schools attend shows and enjoy annual workshops led by our scholars.
For the past three years, Sixth Form students have entered original plays into the Southern Counties Drama Festival, earning nominations for Best Youth Actor and Best Youth Production.
Drama scholarships are awarded to candidates with a strong commitment to performance and collaboration. Scholars are expected to contribute to our busy co-curricular programme as actors, directors or designers. Older scholars are encouraged to mentor younger ones, strengthening our sense of community.
Our state-of-the-art Concert Hall and Mitre Theatre host large-scale and intimate productions. As we expand to welcome girls in Year 6 and 7 from 2027, the school is investing in performing arts facilities to benefit every student. A new mirrored studio is already in use and further studio spaces are planned to enhance lessons and rehearsals.
