INTERIM TERM COURSE CATALOG

JANUARY 6-16, 2026

INTERIM TERM PHILOSOPHY

Interim Term is a separate, abbreviated term that occurs during the first two weeks of school in January, following Christmas break. During this time, students are able to participate in a variety of non-traditional learning opportunities that are more difficult to accomplish during the school year. During an upper school student’s journey at Trinity Prep, the goal of Interim Term is to offer:

• Enriching co/curricular opportunities not typically available in the regular curriculum;

• Independent research opportunities and project-based learning;

• Domestic and international travel opportunities with varying academic foci that encompass experiences such as cultural exchanges, service learning, scientific investigation, and historical tours;

• Career development opportunities and internships;

• Community service endeavors;

• Choice and flexibility in learning.

Some of the major benefits of an Interim Term are personal and intellectual growth, relationship building, and health and wellness. Students have an opportunity to take a course for the “love of learning” and the satisfaction of a curiosity, and faculty have the opportunity to offer unique courses and explore new fields of study. This missioncentered approach inspires learning and teaching in creative ways by fostering experiential learning and embracing diversity in thought and perspective, and it cultivates relationships between students and teachers in a unique environment of shared learning. Student wellness is at the forefront.

APPROACH

During Interim Term, the day will be broken into two blocks, and courses are either single or double blocks. In week one, students will take their first set of classes. In week two, students will take their second set of classes. Interim courses are designed to be intellectually stimulating and fun. As part of our school’s wellness initiative, Interim Term should allow teachers and students to engage in learning for learning’s sake.

The large blocks of time available (180 minutes) for intensive courses allow for student-centered, hands-on, and immersive learning and/or inquiry-based learning. Students will be focused on thinking, designing, planning, and producing. What they produce will depend on the course, but it may be a presentation, a debate, a reflective essay, a robot, a new game, a photo collage, a proposal for a solution to a social problem, etc.

Evaluation is not based on traditional written tests but rather on student projects, performances, and engagement. Class time should be leveraged for project-based learning and activities so that homework is minimal.

Teachers are encouraged to branch out from their typical course content to teach a topic connected to a long-time hobby or perhaps related to a certification they have that is outside their typical content. Teachers can also explore creative topics related to their typical course content (i.e. the Chemistry of Cosmetics for a science teacher), but interim courses SHOULD NOT be designed to teach a unit of a standard course we already offer, a brush-up of current course material, or an AP prep camp.

Interim Term allows teachers to live in their avocation, as opposed to vocation, offering courses like the following:

• Bioethics

• Personal Finance

• Music & Social Change

• Making a Short Film

• Jewelry Making

• Yoga

• Mathematics of Driverless Cars

• Sports Analytics

Daily Schedule

Characteristics of Interim Courses:

• Three-hour block for four consecutive days

• Mixed grades in each course

• Evaluation is product-based, not a test, but a reflective essay, written piece, how-to video, informative pamphlet, demonstration, etc.

• Minimal lecture; zero to minimal homework

• Pass/fail

• Typically, classes will be capped at 20 students per single instructor.

• They will culminate in a symposium when students will showcase their final product.

Symposium

Interim Term will culminate in a Symposium on Friday, Jan 16, 2026, where students will showcase the final products created during their Interim Courses with opportunities to rotate around the Symposium and view the work of others. The Symposium will occur in the morning and will be open for middle

school students, parents, and potentially some outside visitors to tour. The day of the Symposium will be an early-release day; students will leave campus when the Symposium ends at lunchtime.

Grade-level Specifics

9th Grade

Ninth grade is a great opportunity to begin working on community service hours to go toward Bright Futures, and learning what type of community service a student enjoys is an important part of meaningful service. Thus , Interim Term will be broken into two portions. One week of Interim Term will be set aside to give 9th graders the opportunity to serve at various nonprofits, to learn from nonprofit organizers, to help individuals in need, and to earn roughly 30 hours of community service. The opposite week will provide opportunities for students to take courses from the Interim Course Catalog, including travel courses.

10th and 11th Grade

Students in 10th and 11th grades have the opportunity to take 2-4 courses listed in the course catalog, depending on whether they opt to take single or double block courses. They also have the option to take an Interim Travel Course.

12th Grade

12th graders have many options to choose from for their Interim Term:

• Register for courses in the course catalog

• Take an Interim Travel Course

• Serve as a teaching assistant for a teacher offering an Interim Course

• Apply for an internship in the Central Florida area

Internships

Seniors interested in doing an internship during Interim are required to fill out an application, which will be reviewed by the Career Coordinator, Director of Interim Term, and the upper school division head. It must meet the following criteria; however, simply meeting said criteria does not guarantee approval:

• Must run daily either one full interim week (Jan 6-9 OR Jan 12-15) OR the full interim term (Jan 6-15). If a senior does a one-week internship, they must then register for Interim courses during the other week of Interim.

• Internships cannot be overseen by someone related to the student.

• Seniors will be expected to submit a reflection and/or final product to demonstrate what they learned during their internship.

• Students must arrive on time to their internship location and must stay until 3 p.m. or later if required by the business.

• Students must arrange for their own transportation to and from the internship site.

• Internship hours are not eligible for community service hours.

POLICIES

All Interim Term work must be completed before the first day of spring semester.

Grades: Interim Courses are pass/fail. Attendance during the course and during the Symposium is necessary to pass a course,

as is the submission of a final product/ project. Passing Interim Term is a requirement for graduation. Students must earn one interim credit per year for every year they are enrolled in grades 9-12 at Trinity Prep. Credits earned during Interim Term, however, do not replace credits for graduation and may not be substituted for other graduation requirements.

Registration

Students will register for courses in the fall semester. Enrollment priority in all courses is given to 12th, 11th, 10th, and 9th in that order. Students should take great care in making course selections. Given the short length of Interim Term, there will be no add/ drop period. Students must register for classes at each period of the day. There are no free periods during Interim Term.

Course Fees

Many courses are available at no additional cost, but some, particularly those that include off-campus travel, an entry ticket, or a tour, may include an additional cost. Those costs are listed with the course description in this catalog and will be billed to the student’s TADS account in January. Students who receive financial aid can receive financial aid for Interim course fees.

Whether courses are on campus or off, students are responsible for bringing a lunch or purchasing one.

CONDUCT

All rules of conduct denoted in the Student Handbook are in effect during Interim Term. Students engaged in off-campus Interim

Term programs are expected to abide by the following additional regulations; failure to do so will result in their exclusion from offcampus activities:

Interships

Students participating in internships, as part of learning the demands of the professional world and in appreciation of the service provided by internship sponsors, should be respectful, punctual, and appropriately dressed for all internship activities. Only illness or family emergency would be acceptable reasons for failing to appear at specified internship hours, and students are expected to notify sponsors promptly if these occur. Following the term, students should send written thank you notes to sponsors as instructed by the Career Coordinator.

Travel

Students participating in International Travel must sign an agreement at the time of registration to abide by the instructions of trip chaperones. Specific regulations are designed by the chaperones to protect student and chaperone safety, to maintain the dignity and good name of Trinity Preparatory School of Florida, and to ensure that all trip participants benefit as much as possible from the extraordinary educational experience.

Students engaged in field trips as part of an Interim course should abide by instructions from teachers and chaperones accompanying them and dress appropriately.

INTERIM TERM TRIPS & VARSITY SPORTS

It is Athletic Department policy that students who elect to participate in overnight Interim Term trips will not be eligible for winter season varsity athletics. Participation on a varsity squad requires a commitment to the entire season, including the two weeks of Interim Term. Therefore, students who intend to play varsity sports in the winter should not enroll for the overnight Interim Term trips.

INTERIM TERM TRIPS & FINE ARTS

Participation in the upper school play is compatible with Interim Term trips. However, being in the core cast of a show may preclude travel during January. Such decisions will be made by the show’s director on a show-byshow basis and can be determined once the season is announced.

For those students participating in All-State Band during the first week of Interim, they must register for All-State Band Interim Course.
