A Publication of Trinity Preparatory School of Florida

We knew we had started something special when we opened our doors in 1968 to 173 students. Since then, we have created an educational institution that has it all – a dynamic curriculum and college guidance program that prepare students for a life of leadership, a winning athletic program, an outstanding fine arts program, and the space to grow spiritually. From this, we have developed something priceless along the way: our wonderful students, amazing faculty and staff, prepared alumni, supportive parents and grandparents, and friends – all of whom have worked to make an impact in our world.

Letter From Head of School

Dear Trinity Family,

As I begin my ninth year as head of school at Trinity Prep, we sit on the precipice of change-the Sankar Science Center. Changing the architecture of learning on our campus will bring about many planned and, of course, some unplanned transitions. This ongoing build is a time to reflect on the past and celebrate Central Florida’s long-standing commitment to Trinity Prep’s mission, leadership, students, and families while we look to the future. Change is good.

We are changing from a school to an institution.

Anyone reading this letter knows Trinity Prep promotes leadership development, encourages ethical behavior at school and beyond, and reinforces the highest standards of respect, dignity, integrity, character, and academic development. Anyone reading this letter understands that we are increasingly leaning into our obligation to develop the whole child in mind, body, and spirit. This activity makes the campus exciting, messy, dynamic, and full of excellent, deep, fruitful, and challenging relationships.

Throughout the year, staff, faculty, and volunteers organize school events and functions that promote and honor the complexity of the human experience- sometimes our own and often those of others.

Connecting with others requires a concerted effort.

• Our teachers foster an inquiry-based classroom environment that values open communication, embracing the diversity of thought and perspective we seek in a rich and stimulating intellectual environment.

• We empower our students to lead, manage, and execute small and large-scale events that convey knowledge and understanding and develop a sense of ownership, purpose, and passion.

• Our families enhance the Trinity Ex perience by preparing each student’s home environment and our campus for the ever-evolving developmental process.

• We seek and maintain contact with our alumni and encourage them to return, reengage, and share their stories of the world beyond 5700 Trinity Prep Lane.

Two months ago, we said goodbye to the 132 members of the Class of 2024. Just like graduating classes before them, they excelled in every way possible. For a relatively small school, we produce a disproportionate number of graduates who will go on to be movers and shakers in their chosen professions – Broadway stars, surgeons, scientific researchers, professional athletes, noted authors, professional musicians. These are just some of the beautiful outcomes of an institution thriving in pursuit of excellence in all things.

We empower our students to lead, manage, and execute small and largescale events that convey knowledge and understanding and develop a sense of ownership, purpose, and passion.
Byron M. Lawson Jr. Head of School

INTRODUCING TRINITY PREP'S UPDATED SCHOOL CREST

The revamped crest is a culmination of previous versions and a dedication to our founding leaders. The symbol in the center is a modern derivative of the original Chi Rho established in 1968 by our founder and first Headmaster, Canon A. Rees Hay. The red in the shield is from the color of that original crest.

In this new version, the Chi Rho is flanked by an iteration of our current Fleur de Lis, encompassed in a timeless shield, and accented by laurel.

The new crest is paired with our official full name, Trinity Preparatory School of Florida.

This new design pays homage to our beginning while guiding us forward into the future.

Grandparents Day

Grandparents Day at Trinity Prep is more than just a celebration; it is a cherished tradition that has spanned decades and reinforced the bond between generations. We invite grandparents to spend a memorable morning with their grandchildren each year, attending classes, enjoying breakfast, and celebrating the special connection that unites them with the Trinity family.

The day began with a warm welcome and delicious breakfast provided by dozens of hardworking parent volunteers, creating a perfect opportunity for grandparents to reconnect with their grandchildren and share stories. As they moved through the campus, they shadowed their grandchildren in classes, participated in lessons, and sat in on

special presentations showcasing the talents and achievements of students. This year, guests were treated to exciting demonstrations from the robotics and forensics teams, performances by the jazz band and vocal society, and an inspiring speech from the student body president.

Grandparents Day is significant to Trinity Prep grandparents because it fosters a sense of community and provides a glimpse into the unique educational journeys of their grandchildren. As we celebrate this day each year, we are reminded of the invaluable role grandparents play in shaping the lives of our students. Their presence enriches our school community, making the tradition a cornerstone of our shared experience.

Headmaster's Day

Trinity Prep kicked off Headmaster's Day 2024 with a bang, as the rocket launch marked the start of the festivities. The action didn’t stop there. Sidewalk chalk artists showcased their vibrant designs, while spirited games of basketball, dodgeball, kickball, spike ball, ultimate frisbee, and sponge relay commenced

across campus. The grand finale was the inaugural junior-senior color war, a fierce battle sending plumes of pink and blue across Hubbard Field, ending in a thrilling victory for the seniors.

As the day wrapped up, students headed home to enjoy their afternoon off and reminisce about the day’s highlights. Headmaster's Day 2024 was another spectacular showcase of school spirit, camaraderie, and joy, leaving underclassman looking ahead to next year’s celebration.

The Class of 2024 Takes the Stage

In a spirited celebration, Trinity Prep proudly hosted its 56th Commencement ceremony on Friday, May 24. The campus was filled with excitement as 132 graduating seniors, in their caps and gowns, prepared to take their final walk across the stage. This symbolic event marked not only the end of their high school years but also the exhilarating launch into their futures.

The ceremony was rich with emotion and inspiration. The salutatorian, Tavish Ward, and valedictorians David Bryskin, Sarah Munjed, and Lucas Qu delivered powerful speeches, stirring tears of joy as they reminisced about their shared experiences and imparted heartfelt advice to their peers. Their words resonated and encapsulated the essence of their time at Trinity Prep and the hopes they carry forward.

Adding to the momentous occasion, commencement speaker Eric Jacobsen graced the stage, offering an impactful message of perseverance, hope, and boundless potential. As a cellist, conductor, and Music Director of the Orlando Philharmonic

Orchestra and Virginia Symphony Orchestra, he shared his personal journey of resilience and triumph, urging graduates to embrace their futures with courage, saying in closing, “You are powerful and confident and strong. We’re going to make mistakes, we’re going to open every door we can, we’re going to show what we feel as well as say it, and you're going to move us by being creative, building, and improving this world. I feel a deep sense of love and optimism for you.”

In the picturesque setting of the Quad, the new graduates took their place around the rock and concluded the ceremony with the time-honored tradition of passing the diplomas. As each graduate received their diploma, the air was filled with tears, cheers, and new beginnings.

Congratulations to the Class of 2024! Your hard work and dedication paid off. As you step into the future, carry forward the lessons learned and treasured memories. Remember: once a Saint, always a Saint.

Trinity Prep's Second Annual College Fair

The College Counseling team is thrilled to announce that we will host our second annual College Fair on campus on Saturday, September 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. Access to this unique opportunity is offered exclusively to Trinity Prep families and provides an invaluable experience for all of our upper school students, exposing them to a wide variety of colleges and universities located all over the world.

All upper school students and their parent(s)/ guardian(s) are both invited and strongly encouraged to attend for numerous reasons.

EXPLORE COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES

Students and their families will have the opportunity to explore various colleges and universities in person, all in one place. From small liberal arts colleges to large research universities, this year’s fair will allow attendees to interact with the admissions representatives from institutions of all shapes and sizes.

DISCOVER NEW EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

The exposure to unique colleges and universities will help Trinity Prep students identify schools they have yet to consider and further broaden their understanding of the diverse educational

opportunities available. Meeting face-to-face with admissions representatives will allow students and their families to ask any specific institutional questions they may have. These interactions will provide insight beyond what can be found on a college’s website, allowing students to get a feel for whether a particular university may be the right fit for them.

MAKE CONNECTIONS

Last, making personal connections with admissions representatives shows demonstrated interest in the college or university, which could be beneficial during the application process. In most cases, the college representatives attending our fair will be reading all of Trinity Prep’s applications, so it is important to make a good impression.

In addition to the value the 2024 College Fair brings to Trinity families, this exciting opportunity will also be our opportunity to showcase Trinity Prep’s impressive students and campus to the admissions representatives who will be reading our students' applications.

This event is a time of exploration and discovery. We can’t wait to see you at the fair!

Engaging the World

AP Language Classes Drive Change Through Service-Learning

What sets Trinity Prep’s AP French and Spanish Language courses apart is the integration of a servicelearning component through the College Board’s educational partner, WE Service. This program fosters student engagement by allowing them to apply their language skills beyond the classroom, impacting their local community and the world through raising awareness, fundraising, problem solving, and volunteering.

This year, our AP French students faced the challenge of following up on a successful project with Touareg

cooperative in Francophone Niger, Africa. After extensive discussions, the class embarked on a collective WE Service project once again, eager to work together.

To inspire students to find a cause they were passionate about, we began by exploring the United Nations’ seventeen Sustainable Development Goals in the target language. These goals address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice. As students engaged with the U.N. website, they

practiced their interpretive reading skills, and the excitement grew about potential projects.

With many ocean and science enthusiasts in the class, Goal 14, “Life Below Water,” (conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development), emerged as the chosen cause. Students then identified two Francophone non-profit organizations with related missions: L’ASSOMER in Martinique and the Madagascar Whale Shark Project in Nosy Be, Madagascar. Additionally, students had the opportunity to connect with Christelle Hyacinthe, a French Marine Science researcher at the University of Georgia Department of Marine Sciences, during her lab’s expedition on the Atlantis (WHOI) in the Gulf of California.

With qualified French-speaking interlocutors, students undertook the following steps:

1. Study the mission of the selected non-profit organizations and UGA ocean expedition goals.

2. Research the culture and environmental challenges of each region.

3. Write emails in the target language to arrange virtual meetings with the NGOs and scientists.

4. Prepare questions in the target language for video calls.

5. Take and refine notes from the video calls.

6. Share their experiences with the community during a school assembly to generate interest and excitement for their fundraiser.

This process allowed students to practice the AP French exam components, such as email and conversation, and develop essential world language skills, including cultural comparisons, interpretive reading and listening, and presentational speaking and writing. They also honed their leadership skills.

The crepe sale served as a team-building exercise, and donating to a cause they were passionate about brought a sense of achievement and happiness.

At the end of the school year, students organized a French crepe sale, raising $700 for the NGOs. The crepe sale served as a team-building exercise, and donating to a cause they were passionate about brought a sense of achievement and happiness. The class proudly adopted “Chouchou,” French for "darling," their very own Madagascar whale shark and will receive updates on its whereabouts.

As a teacher, I was also delighted to bridge my AP French class with our science department by involving Independent Science Research students and their teacher in one of our video calls.

A Legacy of Excellence

The Trinity Voice's Award-Winning Year

Trinity Prep’s student-run magazine, The Trinity Voice, has once again elevated our school's reputation in scholastic journalism. The monthly publication plays a crucial role in the school community. It serves as a vital platform connecting students, staff, faculty, alumni, and the community at large. By covering a wide range of topics–from sports and features to news and opinion pieces–the magazine reflects the diverse interests and voices within the school. It fosters a sense of unity and pride, offering students a space to express their perspectives and share accomplishments.

In the early months of the 2023-24 school year, two of its members, Olivia Kortman '24 and David Hull ’25, were honored in the National Scholastic Press Association Clips & Clicks Fall Contest. Olivia Kortman ’24, with her first-place news photo, and David Hull ’25, with his honorable mention in the sports category, have showcased their exceptional talents and contributed to the collective achievement of our Trinity Prep community.

The accolades didn't stop there. The Saints who contribute to The Trinity Voice have also garnered national awards from the International High School Honor Society, Quill and Scroll, which celebrates individual student initiatives and achievements in journalism. David Hull was named Sports Writer of the Year and placed second in Sports Feature Writing nationwide. Sammy Lou ’26 secured second place as Features Writer of the Year, and Lucy Chong ’26 earned third place as Designer of the Year. These achievements reflect our students' high caliber and dedication to journalistic excellence.

The Trinity Voice performed outstandingly at the Florida Scholastic Press Association (FSPA) conference. Four Trinity Prep students were among the few student presenters, sharing the stage typically reserved for advisors and professional journalists. The Trinity Voice earned three major awards: David Steinberg ’25 was named Sports Journalist of the Year, Nikhil Daniel ’26 was recognized as Emerging Journalist of the Year, and Laziza Talipova ’25 won first place in Feature Writing. Collectively, the staff was honored as an AllFlorida Publication and a Sunshine State Standout, amassing over 61 awards ranging from “Honorable Mention” to “Best of the Best!”

These achievements are a testament to the unwavering commitment of the magazine’s staff and its advisor, Erin Miller, who recently received the Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction award from the National Society of High School Scholars. This recognition and her District 3 Teacher of the Year award from the FSPA for the second consecutive year underscore her pivotal role in guiding our students to remarkable heights. Her dedication enhances the educational experience and secured $1,000 for classroom materials, further creating an enriched learning environment.

The Trinity Voice stands as a shining example of what student journalism can achieve with passion, support, and exceptional mentorship. It highlights our students' remarkable talents and strengthens our community's bonds, creating a legacy of excellence and connection that extends far beyond the school gates.

One of the highlights of this past year has been the opportunity to become an integral part of the school community, professionally as the Assistant Head of School for External Affairs and personally. My family and I have embraced the transition to Trinity Prep and have been warmly welcomed by faculty, staff, and students alike. Enrolling our own children (Isabella ’24, Emma ’26, and Alexander ’31) has given me firsthand perspective on our school's exceptional educational experience, and I’ve been able to witness the unwavering dedication of our community, staff, and faculty. It’s indescribable.

Through this shared Trinity Prep experience, I have better understood our students' and families' hopes and dreams. This insight has helped shape our efforts and ensure that our advancement initiatives will resonate with the hearts and minds of our community.

NOCHUR SANKAR SCIENCE CENTER

I am excited to announce that Trinity Prep has begun its first steps toward its building improvements campaign, Building for Tomorrow, which centers on establishing state-of-theart learning environments for our students and creating new spaces on our campus. I can look outside my office window and see our dream becoming reality. This year was marked by significant progress, but we remain steadfast in our work to continue securing funds for the science center and future projects. The expected opening of the Nochur Sankar Science Center is planned for fall 2025.

TRINITY PREP FUND

The support we have received from our parents, faculty, staff, and generous donors has been instrumental in shaping an exceptional year. For the 2023-24 fiscal year, Trinity Prep received more than 480 gifts and over $252,000. This year, we welcome Shane Hendry as Director of Development and Annual Giving to oversee the Trinity Prep Fund, and we anticipate a very active fiscal year in 2024-25.

ADMISSIONS

Trinity Prep enrollment remains strong. We continue to see demand surpassing capacity, resulting in waitlists across multiple grade levels. Thank you to our families for continuing to be our best ambassadors sharing the love of Trinity Prep with your friends, neighbors, and colleagues.

CORPORATE PARTNERSHIPS PROGRAM

Beginning in 2024, Trinity Prep is creating a business opportunity for local businesses to promote their organization while supporting our school. If you want to learn more about our corporate partnership program, contact Shane Hendry, Director of Development and Annual Giving, at 321-282-2558.

I’d also like to give a shout-out and special recognition to Mary Ranson (outgoing President of the TPO), Eileen Tongson (outgoing president of the Patrons of the Arts), and Todd Demetriades (outgoing president of the Athletics Boosters) for all of your assistance, support, and helpful conversations this past year. Moving forward,

I cannot wait to have a greater rapport with and extend a warm welcome to Karen Gilmer (incoming president of TPO), Tobin Baum (incoming president of the Patrons of the Arts), and Aimee Nocero Lewis (incoming president of the Athletics Boosters).

Letter From Alumni Relations

Dear Trinity Family,

We love the excitement that accompanies the start of the school year, from welcoming new students and teachers to catching up with colleagues and friends, to looking ahead and marking our calendars with all the plans for the new school year. And have we got plans for you! Our calendar is filling up with chances to get together and share time, memories, and experiences. Along with our regular events–Homecoming, Golden T Classic, Jingle Mingle, Reunion Weekend–we’re bringing back the Bear Gully Bash Night Golf Event, several regional alumni gatherings, and a couple of special class reunions. Clip out the list of events or scan the QR code, and mark your calendars, too!

In addition to attending events, we are so appreciative of the many ways our alumni stay in touch–and give back. From alumni scientists coming to the classroom in our series, “Saints Talking Science” (more on that program will be in the next magazine), to alumni presenters representing their college alma maters and other special awards at Upper School Special Awards Night, to alumni establishing endowed scholarships: these are just a few of the ways our alumni engage. Our alumni are true Saints! In the months to come, we will share with you more opportunities for even more engagement.

We’ve got much to prepare and plan for, and that brings me to the high point of this letter: a welcome to Hannah Parker Schuttler ’13 as our new alumni associate! Now this is not cause for panic: Hannah will still be rocking it in the classroom as an amazing teacher and as the Diane and Michael Maher English Endowed Chair, with regular teaching duties. And to those of you who have graced our softball field, you know that she won’t be able to stay away from the dugout, either. But she’s agreed to take on an additional role as support for the Alumni Office. As our alumni base grows, we want to keep up–and keep up with you! And who better to involve you in the conversation than Hannah?

As we look forward to an enhanced alumni experience, we hope you will, too. Join us here, there, and everywhere–we never tire of seeing you. And if you can’t join us in person, follow us on social media. And do send us your latest news. The family wants to know what is happening with you.

We love the excitement that accompanies the start of the school year, from welcoming new students and teachers to catching up with colleagues and friends, to looking ahead and marking our calendars with all the plans for the new school year.

Elizabeth Lowndes McIntosh ’78 Director of Leadership Giving and Donor Relations, Alumni Relations

with his trademark enthusiasm and expertise, to be recognized and honored by former athletes. Participants laced up their sneakers and hit the court, while others cheered from the sidelines. The energy was palpable as players and spectators alike reveled in the friendly competition and shared passion for the sport. It was more than just a game; it was an opportunity to relive the glory days and strengthen the bonds that tie us all to Trinity Prep.

CLASS OF 1974 CHI RHO SOCIETY INDUCTION

One of the most touching moments of the weekend was the induction of the Class of 1974 into the prestigious Chi Rho Society. This special ceremony took place on Saturday afternoon both on campus and via Zoom to celebrate alumni who have reached their 50th reunion. Members of the Class of 1974 were celebrated with a pinning ceremony, marking their lasting connection to Trinity Prep. The gathering included a campus tour, a delicious meal, and sharing fond memories while flipping through

yearbooks. It was a heartfelt occasion highlighting the enduring bonds formed during their time at Trinity Prep, with laughter echoing across campus, a testament to the profound impact being a Saint has had on its students.

As we look forward to future reunions, we invite you to join us in upholding the school's legacy and ensure its continued success. The connections we foster and the memories we cherish help to perpetuate the spirit of Trinity Prep, motivating and influencing future generations of Saints.

Show your Saint spirit, support programs and students, and stay connected to your Trinity family.

In Memoriam

December 3, 2023

Jim was born in 1938. He attended Yale University, where he received his undergraduate degree in math. He also sang with the Whiffenpoofs, the world’s oldest and best known collegiate a cappella group. He received his master’s degree in mathematics from Bowdoin College.

Jim taught math at The Lawrenceville School, Menlo School (CA), Howey-inthe-Hills, Virginia Episcopal School, and Trinity Preparatory School. He retired from Trinity after more than ten years (1985-1995), teaching math and computer science and coaching track. He sang and acted with Orlando Opera for 12 seasons and at many community theaters. Jim is survived by one son, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and longtime partner Linda Fessel.

June 24, 2024

Jerry was born in Falls City, Nebraska in 1941. He graduated from the University of Nebraska as a business major. Six months into his first post-graduate job, a high school friend persuaded Jerry to join him at the University of Nebraska College of Law, from which he graduated in 1966.

Jerry thrived in law school, setting the path of a legal career that continued for 56 years until his retirement at the end of 2022. He practiced law in Kansas City, Missouri for five years before moving to Orlando in 1971, starting his own firm soon thereafter that grew into Young, Turnbull, and Linscott and merged with Cleveland-based BakerHostetler in 1979. Jerry practiced first in securities and later as a litigator.

Beyond his unquenchable passion for the law – practicing it, litigating it, and living it – Jerry had many other talents. He was hugely loved, and he loved his family deeply. He is survived by his wife, Theresa, by his sons, Palmer ‘07, Mark, and Todd, and by six grandchildren.

Keep watch, Lord God, over all your Saints; lead us to embrace You as the source of all Truth. Bless the whole Trinity family; fill us with Your Word and Wisdom. Guide us by your Holy Spirit; may everything that we say and do bring honor and glory to Your Holy Name. Amen.

Letter From Development

Dear Saints Family and Friends,

I’m not sure that I could have picked a more exciting time to join the Trinity Prep community. In the short time I have been on campus, I’ve interacted with students, alumni, faculty, and staff, witnessed the unique traditions that accompany commencement, and just recently watched the campus reimagination process begin with the groundbreaking of the Nochur Sankar Science Center.

I have been quick to learn that Trinity Prep values are omnipresent. Trinity Family, Educational Excellence, Academic and Extracurricular, Leadership and Character Development, Faith, and Spirituality are encountered daily. I’m encouraged and motivated by seeing these values coming to life on campus and in the community.

One of our goals this year is greater engagement within the Trinity community. We are rolling out a Corporate Partnerships program that is a mutually beneficial business opportunity for those who want to promote their organization while still supporting our school's exceptional academic and extra-curricular activities.

In an additional effort to grow and streamline our giving efforts this school year, we will be completing one request: the Trinity Prep Fund. In past years, families have had options to contribute to our Boosters and Patrons organizations, among other groups. This year, all our families will experience the benefits of those groups without a membership fee. We hope the money you previously considered for those organizations will be directed to the Trinity Prep Fund, where you will be able to designate the direction of your gift. The options will include athletics, arts, faculty professional development, and more. With the support of Every Family, Every Year , we know that Trinity Prep’s future is bright.

I’m genuinely excited about what's next for Trinity Prep. Please know you are a large part of that. I look forward to connecting with you all and working together to create the best experience for today’s and tomorrow’s Saints.

Fleur de L is Cup's Wimbledon in Winter Park

Tennis anyone? Trinity Prep’s biennial Fleur de Lis Cup Tennis Tournament and fundraiser was an ace in the hole this year, not just serving up outstanding tennis but also bringing together tennis enthusiasts and supporters in support of Trinity Prep and its mission. This year’s event, “Wimbledon in Winter Park,” was organized by the Marketing and Development teams and the Trinity Parent Organization to support the Trinity Prep Fund. Co-chaired by Stacey Demetriades and Karen Gilmer, with enthusiastic participation from players and spectators, the event truly embodied the spirit of unity and collaboration

Interlachen Country Club in Winter Park provided the perfect backdrop as attendees donned their tennis whites and enjoyed the traditional Wimbledon strawberries and cream. “Not only was outstanding tennis being played, but we also had great success with our silent auction, due to the generosity of local merchants, Trinity Prep, and the community at large,” said Ms. Gilmer. More than 20 items were auctioned throughout the afternoon, including tennis lessons and equipment, local merchant gift cards, and senior parking spots.

In a delightful twist, traditional winners were not named this year. “One of the things we loved the most was that this year, we did not declare any winners, but instead, we were able to surprise a few unsuspecting players with unusual awards,” said Ms. Gilmer. Having fun with the awards helped to make the event a laidback and enjoyable experience.

In the end, Wimbledon in Winter Park was a smash hit. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to its success. With such strong participation from the community, there’s confidence that next year’s auction will continue to strengthen the bonds between the school and Central Florida.
