FEAR OF MORE JOB CUTS

TALKS are taking place about more job cuts at Kronospan wood panel factory at Chirk. Last month the company, which employs just over 600 people, announced they were looking for about 13 voluntary redundancies because of the downturn in the economy. But this week the company confirmed it was looking for more job cuts, although it cannot say how many while it is still in negotiations with unions at the plant. Works director Mike McKenna said: “Manufacturing in Britain is facing very hard times. “We are doing everything possible to secure future business but unfortunately this means we must take tough decisions now.” Already this year the construction and manufacturing industry has taken a massive blow across North Wales with the loss of well over 1,000 jobs. The list of companies hit in North East Wales include: ■ 163 at Flexsys in Acrefair which shut down ■ 64 at Fenmarc which produces ready made meals in Wrexham ■ 110 at JCB Wrexham – workers have now voted to work reduced hours to stave off more job losses

In addition, the threat of the axe hangs over hundreds more jobs at other struggling companies. Construction firm David McLean Group Ltd went into administration this week leaving its 360 employees, 130 of which work at the firm’s Deeside HQ, in fear of losing their jobs. Another 70 are feared to be going at ALcontrol’s Manor Lane laboratories in Hawarden. And 53 jobs were transferred by Comet from its home delivery depot on Deeside Industrial Park to DHL at Skelmersdale.
