LORRY OWNER STAYS IN JAIL A LORRY fleet boss jailed for 16 years for his part in a plot to smuggle £1.7m of heroin into the UK has failed in a bid for freedom.

Judges rejected as ‘quite incapable of belief’ the fresh evidence put forward by Northwich man Stephen Stockall to clear his name. Stockall, 48, of Marchford Close, Kingsmead, was sent down at Southampton Crown Court in March, last year, after being found guilty of being involved in illegally importing 13.8kg of heroin through Newhaven in June, 2006. The drugs had been smuggled from Dieppe concealed in a loudspeaker in a lorry driven by Ronnie Rothenburg, formerly of Wallace Street, Northwich, who was also handed a 16-year term. The lorry was in a fleet belonging to Stockall’s firm but he denied all knowledge of the drugs. Stockall lost his appeal at London’s Court of Appeal in May this

Benefit cheat to repay £8,000

Judges reject man’s appeal against drug smuggling conviction year which centred around the customs operation. But Lord Justice Hooper gave Stockall four more weeks to find new evidence to clear his name. On Thursday, that evidence was put before the appeal court but rejected as unconvincing. A man awaiting trial on drugs charges said Stockall played no role in the drug-smuggling ring. But Lord Justice Hooper said:

“What convinces us that this statement is quite incapable of belief is the schedule of phone calls.” The judge said ‘a significant number of phone calls’ had been made between Stockall, Rothenburg and the evidence-giver. “This application for leave to appeal against conviction is dismissed,” he concluded.

A BENEFIT cheat who pocketed more than £8,000 in illegal claims has been ordered to carry out 200 hours community service by magistrates. Jo-Anne Such, 39, of Kingsley Walk, Winsford, had been secretly living with her partner while picking up housing and council tax benefit and Income Support as a single person over eight years. And she must repay every penny of the £8,080.87 owed to Cheshire West and Chester Council and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). At Northwich Magistrates Court on Monday, Such was told she must complete the 200 hours unpaid work within 12 months or risk a more severe sentence. She pleaded guilty last month to failing to notify the former Vale Royal Borough Council and the DWP of a change of her circumstances ‘that she knew would affect her entitlement to benefit’. The court heard she had been living with her partner since May 29, 2001, but routinely claimed benefits as if she lived alone. ■ A spokesman for CWaC said: “If anyone believes someone they know is claiming benefit that they are not entitled to, they can call our benefit fraud hotline on 0300 123 7030. All calls are treated in the strictest confidence.”

BEST BRA NONE: Judy Gray of Bratts with competition winners Joan Quinn and Judith Scott. THREE women have been treated to some luxurious lingerie after a Northwich department store revealed the winners of a fashion competition. Judith Scott, of Rudheath, and Joan Quinn, of Moulton, entered the free prize draw at Bratts on Witton Street

and received lingerie sets from Playtex and Lepel. A £50 voucher for Tigi Wear was won by Liz George from Hartford. As part of the event, summer sarongs were given away and models showed off the latest lines in store.

The competition was organised during Bratts’ It Pays to be Fitted event, which encouraged women to be measured for lingerie. Statistics have revealed that 80% of women wear the incorrect size of bra.

Play areas to get a £1m makeover CHILDREN’S play areas in Cheshire have been given a £1m boost. The money will be spent on improving 22 children’s play areas over the next two years. Play leaders have been working with their young charges to help choose their creative play equipment as part of a government-funded scheme aimed at providing high quality, safe play areas. The children’s ideas are now being analysed and landscape architects will draft designs to be discussed with residents and other interested groups at informal local community drop-in sessions.

The Moss Farm play area in Winnington will be discussed at the leisure complex tomorrow night from 6.30pm -7.30pm. The Victoria Street play area in Lostock – ‘the Boundary Street’ playground – will be discussed between 4pm-5.30pm on site. The Little Wood play area in Oakmere will be discussed on Saturday at the open space at Bowyers Waste between 2-3.30pm. The Department for Children, Schools and Families’ Play Builder project will see 22 play areas across urban and rural areas being given a upgrade using natural materials to

encourage traditional play activities. Timber climbing equipment, earth mounds, plants, shrubs and landscaping will be used to allow children to play in a traditional environment. The £1m will be spent following consultation with local communities. Eleven sites will be provided by the end of March 2010 with a further 11 sites by March 2011. For more details on Moss Farm and Victoria Street, contact Helen Batcock on 01606 867540, or to discuss Little Wood contact Phil Davies on 01244 402596.

Pensioner exposed himself to child AN OAP has been imprisoned for exposing himself to a child. On Saturday, May 16, Barry William Hollingsworth, of Tenby, Pembrokeshire, was seen in the children’s underwear department of Next in Northwich. Chester Crown Court heard a mum was shopping with her seven-year-old daughter and eight-year-old son and saw a man crouching by the clothes stand. The daughter then announced: “Mummy, he’s showing me his willy.” The woman looked and saw Hollingsworth had his penis exposed. She shouted and he ran off, was chased across a car park and later arrested. The 67-year-old admitted being at the shop but denied exposing himself. Police subsequently uncovered 15 indecent images, six real images and nine ‘pseudo’ images, on Hollingsworth’s personal computer. Five of the images were Level 4, six Level 3 and four Level 1, with Level 5 being the most serious.

Judge Elgan Edwards said: “It’s terrible a mother can’t go shopping and guarantee the safety of her children.” Holingsworth’s internet search entries included cartoon porn, animal porn and indecent images of girls. When questioned about the findings, Hollingsworth declined to comment. The offences were committed while he was under licence from prison for indecently assaulting a girl under 14 years of age three times in Swansea. In October 2004 he was jailed for five years for the assaults but released on extended licence in December 2007. After the Next offence he was recalled to prison on May 18. The court heard Hollingsworth had two previous convictions for indecent exposure, in 1984 and 1989. Brandishing him “revolting and disgusting”, Judge Edwards jailed him for six months for exposure and 12 months for the indecent images, to run consecutively after the sentence for his previous offence finishes. He was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years and disqualified from working with children for life.

Crowds were up on last year and organisers were delighted with how the fun-filled weekend went. “It all went very well and was a really successful event overall,” said organiser Barbara Turner. “We had a quick shower on Saturday, and one on Sunday, but people stuck around and enjoyed themselves and everyone seemed to have a wonderful time.” The parade left Denton Drive at 1pm and the main event was once again held at Verdin Park. At 3pm on Saturday, Alderman Ron Carey bestowed the coveted Carnival Queen crown on 14-year-old Rudheath High School pupil Demi-Lee Johnson, who lives in Wincham. Accompanying her as part of the retinue was her niece Phoebe Little, who was this year’s fairy queen. Activities and entertainment over the weekend include performances from Quickstep, Sue Morgan School of Dance, tae kwon-do displays, live music and the annual qualifier for Cheshire’s Strongest Man. ■ To see more pictures from this year’s event, log on to our website: www.midcheshirechronicle.co.uk.

Wondering ‘Why me?’ It just is – that’s why! JUSTWilliam The musings of a middle-aged man from Middle England “SOMETIMES I lie awake at night and ask ‘why me?’ A voice answers: ‘Nothing personal, your name just happened to come up’.” So said Charlie Brown – or more accurately, creator Charles Schulz. I ask that question a lot: “Why me?” But in my case it is said not despairingly but purely as a question. When good things happen, my name seems to come up a lot more than I deserve. I was lazy at school but the only price I paid was I had to do a job I didn’t like for 30 years. The pay was good and I made a killing from the firm’s shares scheme, so much so that at the age of 56 I could effectively retire. I chose not to as I wanted to work with children. To my amazement, Toc H taught me how to be a mentor and a counsellor, then a special needs college took me on as a teaching assistant and finally a high school did the same. In my personal life I have a wife who loves me – God alone knows why – two sons who I idolise, two daughters-in-law who are magic and a little grandson who has put a new spring in my old step. I’m one of the lucky ones. Many people are as worthy of good luck as me, many are much more deserving, but for some reason that’s not how life works. We have to take the rough with the smooth. Recently I had a rather nasty experience. I’d done nothing wrong and it was obvious that eventually it would all be cleared up, but that did not help me at the time. I still worried, I still asked “why me?” It was then that my friends and family became so important. Thanks to their support I got through it and came out the other side. I just hope that those people suffering with this recession and other problems have the same kind of friends and family to help them through. If you are one of those unlucky ones wondering ‘Why me?’, just remember it’s nothing personal, your name just came up. Maybe the next time your name comes up it will be with good news – I sincerely hope so.

Get-together for old friends

I WAS interested to read the ‘Just William’ column last week when he referred to his life as a teenager in Rudheath. I was one of the adult founder members of that youth club and I also despair at the lack of facilities for teenagers in the area. After the old youth club closed, I, together with other adult members, fought to get the new youth club in Gadbrook Road- which now appears to be used as offices. Many former members of the youth from the old hut keep in touch and several reunions have been held. A special celebration for the golden anniversary of the start of that youth club is planned for Saturday, February 6, 2010 at Rudheath Social Club. The Everley’s Experience tribute duo – plus a Sixties disco and buffet – will help to recall those halcyon days from the 60s – and the great times we used to have. Anyone wanting details of the event can contact me. ERIC PIMLATT Nucot, Gadbrook Road, Rudheath, Northwich CW9 7JR

Have a heart – and sign up!

I’VE just signed the British Heart Foundation’s petition demanding a clear plan for tackling heart and circulatory conditions in England over the next 10 years and I’d like others to do the same. The current plan to improve care and treatment has significantly helped reduce the number of deaths from heart disease, but it was designed as a 10-year programme – and it’s at the end of its shelf-life. Heart and circulatory disease is the UK’s biggest killer, claiming the lives of around 200,000 people each year. There are over 2m heart patients living in England alone. With no published plan to replace the current strategy, there’s a danger the good work done so far will be lost. Heart patients deserve better. Please support this campaign and sign the BHF petition at www.newheartplan.org.uk IAN BUCKLEY (by email)

There are over 230,000 people who need to use a Changing Places toilet in the UK and yet only 85 Changing Places toilets are available. We all take being able to go out to the shops or to our local leisure centre for granted and yet there are nearly a quarter of a million people whose lives are severely restricted by not having the right toilet facilities. It is certainly dangerous, unhygienic and undignified for anyone to have to be changed on toilet floors and this is why I am supporting Mencap’s calls for a change to the Building Regulations so we can ensure the building of more Changing Places toilets. MIKE HALL MP for Weaver Vale name their favourite bargain pub by writing in or log on to our new website www.thegoodpubguide.co.uk. We’re looking for great value – ie, tasty two-course lunches at rock-bottom prices, two-for -one early bird suppers, super value steaks or pies with a free pint thrown in, OAP and student specials or pocket-friendly themed nights out. Help us spread the good news: the more people who hear about local pub bargains, the more customers turn up – and this in turn helps to keep the prices down. FIONA STAPLEY, Editor, Good Pub Guide

Chance to cut gap in funding

YOU may have noticed over the past couple of years – but we both enjoy pushing ourselves to the limit and living life to the extreme! Tests of endurance and raising funds have become an important part of our lives and we’re both delighted to have taken on the role as patrons of the charity, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). However, you don’t have to be super-fit or an Olympic-medallist to take part

Dispensers of deadly habit

I’VE just written to the new Health Secretary Andy Burnham demanding a total ban on cigarette vending machines We don’t allow alcohol, fireworks, knives or other age restricted products to be sold from vending machines because we know a face-to-face transaction is the best way to make sure they don’t end up in the wrong hands. Cigarettes should be no different. We need to tackle this anomaly which allows children an easy way get hold of cigarettes and damage their health.

The Health Bill, currently going through Parliament, stops short of a full ban. I urge your readers to support this campaign and visit www.bhf.org.uk/outoforder where you can tell the Government to prevent children picking up an addiction that threatens their health. Alzheimer’s respite care

DO readers know there are 700,000 people with dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, in the UK? It’s estimated there will be over a million people by 2025. Caring for a loved one with dementia can be a lonely, stressful experience. The feeling of disconnection is hardest to bear. There may be precious moments of clarity, when memories return and the years roll away but, for the most part, carers have to watch their loved ones drifting slowly away. Many carers are in desperate need of respite but opportunities are few and far between. A third of them haven’t taken a break since they started. I work at a place called Vi-

talise Sandpipers in Southport, an accessible respite break centre for disabled people and carers run by national charity Vitalise. Each year hundreds of people enjoy desperately-needed breaks with us. We regularly have special weeks for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia and their partners – there’s one coming up next January. If you’d like to know more, call 0845 345 1970 or email bookings@vitalise.org.uk. CHRIS ASHCROFT Vitalise Sandpipers, www.vitalise.org.uk

Probe into MP’s expenses BARNTON and Rudheath MP George Osborne, the Shadow Chancellor, is facing an inquiry by the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner into aspects of his expenses. The move follows a complaint by the Tatton constituency’s Labour Party chairman, Laurie Burton, and concerns Mr Osborne’s second home designation between 2001 and 2003 and mortgage claims after 2003. A spokesman for Mr Osborne said the complaint was “political” and his claims were above board.

Mr Burton alleges that between 2001 and 2003 Mr Osborne wrongly identified his main home for the purposes of claiming a second home allowance. He also alleges that, from 2003, Mr Osborne claimed for mortgage payments “that were not necessarily incurred”. Mr Osborne’s spokesman said he had made it clear his Cheshire property was his second home since he was first elected in 2001. He said the MP had told the Commons authorities in 2001 he had increased his

interest-only mortgage on his London home to cover the cost of buying his Cheshire property – and was advised to claim against that until he could change the arrangements. The spokesman said: “George is relaxed about it and has always been very open in answering questions about his expenses. “George has never switched designation for personal advantage. “His arrangements have always sought to minimise the costs to the taxpayer.”

Ofsted: School ‘must do better’ THE defiant headteacher of a struggling high school has drawn on the positives after Government inspectors delivered a ‘must do better’ verdict.

An Ofsted team concluded Verdin High School in Winsford has not shown sufficient improvement during the past three years, and the school will now be subject to a special measures monitoring programme. Inspectors claimed teaching and learning needed to improve generally, but said the best teaching was “rigorous, purposeful and conducted at a good pace”. They also pointed to incidents of “over-boisterousness” among some students, and said behaviour needed to improve. DISAPPOINTED: Headteacher Martin Howlett, inset, says he will do everything But the report did highlight “sig- he can to improve Verdin High School. nificant strengths” in the school, said Mr Howlett, “notably that present standards are showing signs of recovery”. The inspectors praised the school’s care for its most vulnerable students and said staff were quick to deal with instances of bullying. DIS Mr Howlett said: “I am ! CO pleased the inspection ETS UN P R TED has highlighted the A C Y PR strengths of the school. I T I L ICE am also convinced that, UA S Q with the hard work and dedication of staff and Ex-Church Buildings, High Street, Winsford students and the support of the community, standards of achievement will improve. “The Ofsted team commented favourably on the breadth of opportunity the curriculum at Verdin offers, and noted that this was going some way to engage and enthuse young people in their learning.” Lead inspector Stephen Wall noted the school was developing systems for monitoring the performance of students and using this data to tackle underachievement. Last month Woodford Lodge High School, where Mr Howlett is also headteacher, highlighted many positives. WINCHAM COMMUNITY PRIMARY

MID-CHESHIRE COLLEGE MID-CHESHIRE College’s £10m flagship Learning Zone in Winsford will be open within a year, contractors say. Pochins is in the process of erecting the steel shell for the building and college bosses are confident they will take it over at the end of April, 2010. The centre, on Weaver Street, will offer high-quality facilities for young people in vocational subjects including beauty therapy, hairdressing, public services and ICT and will also be used to house some of the academic subjects from the Winsford joint sixth form. The Learning Zone will also offer 14 to 16-year-olds the opportunity to study for vocational qualifications during their last two years at school and act as a centre for adult education. College principal John Reilly said: “The new centre will be a huge boost for lifelong learning in Winsford. Our current accommodation in the town is now looking very tired and we want our staff and students to work and learn in the very best facilities we can build.”

Headteacher Sue How split the pupils into groups named Ash, Beech, Elm and Oak for the day on June 29. The Forest Street school was recently awarded Activemark status for its dedication to sport. School sports co-ordinator Jane Dale said: “We make sure the range of activities we teach gives every pupil the opportunity to develop their sporting strengths.”

Big owl ‘Sue’ is on prowl A LARGE bird of prey capable of taking cats and small dogs is still thought to be on the loose in Cheshire – two months after it escaped. The European eagle owl, a male called Sue, managed to flee its aviary at Stockley Farm, Arley, and has since been hunting in the wild. The owl, which has a 5ft wingspan, has been sighted in rural areas west of Chester but, more recently, it has been spotted nearer to its home near Northwich. Belinda Affleck, secretary at Stockley Farm, said: “Sue’s still on the loose and he’s around here now. “His mate is missing him but he’s enjoying himself because he’s been gone for over two months now.

By Ben Coulbeck “He’s large enough to take small pets so I wouldn’t want to leave my cat out or let a guinea pig run about in the garden.” But keeper Gary Buckles, who manages the bird of prey collection, reckons Sue may be dead already. “People think they’ve seen an eagle owl when it has just been a tawny owl. They don’t know the difference,” he said. “I think Sue could be dead as I don’t think he would survive in the wild. He’s too domesticated.” Stockley Farm is a working farm with a collection of birds of prey, animals and small pets.

OBITUARY OBITU ARY . NEWS

12 MR ROBERT JOHN EDGE

THE funeral took place on May 6 of Robert John Edge, of Weaverham, who died on April 19, aged 58.

A service at St Mary’s Parish Church, Weaverham, conducted by the Rev Rowland Crook, was followed by committal at Walton Lea. John was born at Marbury Park to Jack and Betty Edge, one of five children. In the early 1950s the family moved to Weaverham where he attended Weaverham High School. He left school aged 15 and was employed at Top Rank’s M6 Services at Knutsford. He trained up and became a first grade chef working at top hotels in Knutsford and Alderley Edge. He met and married Lorraine and moved to Frodsham, working for BICC, Helsby, for a number of years. The marriage broke down and he subsequently moved back to Weaverham and worked as a chef at the Hanging Gate Inn and later GleaveWood Residential Home. He was a member of the Boy Scouts in his younger days and was adept at drawing, painting and model making. An avid Liverpool FC fan, John also took a keen interest in photography, motorbikes, horse racing and computers. He is survived by his mother, brother, three sisters, nephews and nieces. Floral tributes from family and friends. Arrangements: Nagle Brothers, Acton Bridge.

MRS LILLIAN STEWART

THE funeral took place on May 14 of Lillian Stewart, of Leftwich, who died in hospital on May 7, aged 88.

A service and committal at Altrincham Crematorium were conducted by the Rev Martyn Cripps. Lillian was born in Aberdeen, the second of seven siblings. She was employed as a net braider in the fishing industry in Aberdeen for a number of years. She married her husband John at St Paul’s in Aberdeen in 1940 and then moved to Leftwich in 1957 when her husband took up employment as a general foreman at Yarwood’s Shipyard, Northwich. She raised her family in Leftwich where she remained for the rest of her life. Lillian became a dinner lady at Leftwich Girls Grammar School when her children attained school age, where she worked for 20 years. Among her interests in her younger days in Scotland was old time and Scottish country dancing. She also enjoyed reading, crosswords, playing bingo at the Plaza in Northwich and various quiz shows on TV. Devoted to her family, she was sadly widowed in 1991 after 51 years of marriage. She is survived by her five children, 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Bearers were her two sons and family members.

MRS BERYL THELWELL

THE funeral took place on May 1 of Mrs Beryl Thelwell, of Weaverham, who died in hospital on April 23, aged 68.

A service at St Mary’s Parish Church, Weaverham, conducted by the Rev Geoffrey Greenhough, was followed by interment at Gorstage Cemetery. Beryl was born in Barnton, one of five children of Enoch and Elizabeth Hodgkinson. She started her working life at Woolworths in Northwich and later the catering department at the ICI Research Lab in Winnington and at Marvel Dry Cleaners in Northwich. Socially outgoing, she enjoyed dancing to rock’n’roll and jive music, line-dancing at Owley Wood Recreation Club, and the week-long jazz festivals at Keswick. Beryl loved the outdoor life, walking in the Lake District and holidays to Cornwall. Later on in life she took up crown green bowling with the Ring O Bells ‘B’ team, becoming an established team member of the Lady Owls at Owley Wood Rec and winning a few trophies and making many friends. Divorced from her first husband, she is survived by her husband Mike, who she married in 1980, daughters Carole and Kerry, brothers and sisters and nephews and nieces. Floral tributes from family, sympathy cards and donations (Macmillan Nurses Palliative Care Fund) were gratefully received.

MRS LILLIAN GERRARD

THE funeral took place on April 22 of Lillian Gerrard, of Hartford, who died at home on April 3, aged 87.

A service at St John’s Church, Hartford, conducted by the Rev George Agar, was followed by committal at Altrincham Crematorium. Lillian was brought up and attended school in Barnton, and during the war years worked at the Ordnance Factory at Risley. She married husband Kenneth in 1953 and together they opened a coin-operated dry cleaners in Hartford. They sold the business and retired in 1980 and moved to Weaverham. Sadly her husband died in 1996 and she moved back to Hartford. An active church member of St John’s and a member of the Women’s Fellowship, she enjoyed travelling, especially to Spain, Jersey and to South Africa visiting family. WINNING SMILE: A mum whose child attends Tumble Tots has won a cottage holiday. Families with second generation ‘TT’ children were invited to enter a nationwide contest for the prize and Isabel Gallagher, of Northwich, was

one of the winners. Isabel, 24, remembers her excitement at her weekly Tumble Tots sessions once her siblings were dropped off at school. “Mum and I had fabulous times together. Mum kept some newspaper clippings of me as

a Tumble Tot,” she said. Now a mum herself to 18-month-old Jack, they attend the same Chester centre each week. She and Jack are seen with Isabel’s mum Trish, Tumble Tots’ technical director Sam Rooke and staff.

Council hopes to press ahead with HQ deal CHESHIRE West and Chester Council has provisionally agreed to sell County Hall to Chester University for £10m and buy offices nearby for almost £20m. CWaC’s executive decision to sell the prime city centre riverside landmark must gain approval from joint owners Cheshire East Council before it can go ahead. Already Labour opposition leaders have asked for the deal to be referred to the council’s corporate scrutiny panel to ensure the proposal represents best use of public money. Conservative council leader Cllr

Mike Jones refuses to talk about the plans but claims County Hall - which was built to house the county council - is unsuitable for modern purposes and the desire to slash the number of operational offices from 24 to three. Labour leader Cllr Derek Bateman said: “This is probably the single biggest piece of expenditure the new council is likely to incur and we need to be satisfied that it is a good use of public money and that the purchaser of County Hall has good intentions for the future. “We’ve called for greater transparency and discussions.”

He added: “Labour’s view is neither in support nor against. We just want to exercise due diligence to the proposals.” Labour finance spokesman Cllr Justin Madders said: “When the council is talking about making cuts throughout all its services, there needs to be a very good case made that spending such a large amount of public money on new offices is the best use of scarce resources.” The offices the council hopes to move to are in the new HQ building on the site of the former Cheshire Constabulary headquarters.

DETECTIVES are appealing for witnesses following an armed robbery at a Northwich off-licence on Saturday night. Two men raided Bargain Booze on Victoria Road shortly after 8pm and escaped with ‘a large amount of cash’ after threatening the 35-year-old female shop assistant. Cheshire police spokeswoman Shelley Williams said: “One of the men remained at the door to the shop, the other went inside armed with a knife and demanded cash from the till. “The shop assistant handed over the cash takings. Both men then ran from the shop down a nearby alleyway, fleeing the scene. Fortunately, nobody was hurt.” Both offenders are white, about 6ft tall and thought to be aged around 40. One was wearing a black, zipped-up hooded top and black gloves. He is described as wearing a cap and sunglasses and had grey stubble on his face and missing teeth. The second man was also wearing a cap. ■ Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed two men in the area at the time, or who may have any information, to call 0845 458 0000, or CrimeStoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

NORTHWICH police’s newest recruit will be patrolling the town centre streets every Saturday from 10am-8pm. PCSO Nicola Smith will be on the beat to speak to shoppers and businesses about any concerns they may have or issues they would like to raise. “The beauty of my role is that although I work on the town centre, I can deal with issues across the Northwich area as, during the week, I help my colleagues in other parts of the town,” she said. “If someone has an issue in another part of Northwich, they can come to see me in town on a Saturday and let me know what’s happening. I can then take that back to the team for the area and work with them on the issues.” Nicola added: “My aim work is to make Northwich a safer place to live and work.”

THE Cheshire Police plane was dispatched over Northwich again last week in an attempt to track down illegal motorcyclists. PCSOs were also sent to Weaverham to look for youths using off-road bikes and riding ‘in an anti-social manner’. Insp Paul Loughlin said: “We did not get them on this occasion but we have secured some good local intelligence which we’ll be following up.”

Low surgery turn-out

A POLICE surgery held in Barnton to identify areas of concern for residents in the village was attended by just four people. PCSO Diana Wiggins and PC Emily Taylor held the community meeting for Lydyett Lane residents last week. Insp Paul Loughlin, head of policing in Northwich, said: “Although only four people turned up, we were able to identify the issues causing problems for the residents.”

Family event of the year T

he Cholmondeley Pageant of Power will turn the tranquil pastureland of Cheshire into a frenzy of activity in just a couple of weeks time.

This will be the event’s second year, but following the decision to combine it with the annual firework concert, it will be the most unique festival in Europe. Last year, competitors and public alike adored the mix of high speed drama and the relaxed atmosphere and now the event is even bigger. With an impressive trade village and lifestyle pavilion, it will be the family event of the summer. The region has demonstrated an appetite for an event which combines speed, nerve and flair with exceptional design and engineering. At the forefront of manufacturing design between the wars was Ettore Bugatti, whose Molsheim works

were producing some of the best racing and touring cars. Lord Cholmondeley’s grandparents were friends and loyal clients and so Bugatti is to be the featured marque. A selection of the most important Bugattis will be displayed on the Concours d’Elegance, including the rarely seen Royale, Brescia and the latest Bugatti Veyron. These cars will be competing on the new Cholmondeley spring circuit against an eye-watering lineup from Le Mans and Formula 1, to Rally world champions. On the adjoining water, powerboats will compete for the Breitling Trophy and no doubt there will be dramatic thrills and spills as these extraordinary boats carve around the mere. The air displays are an event in themselves with RAF Falcons, Breitling Aerobatics, Spitfire flypast, Tri-Services helicopter agility

competition and even a flying car. Back on the ground the military deployment will be immense. Headed by arguably the best tank in the world, the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank, there will be Warrior and Scimitar armoured vehicles, missile launchers, Trojan mine busting and Titan bridge laying tanks among many others. The event charity is the Army Benevolent Fund. On top of all these attractions there will be no shortage of opportunities to get involved with simulators, rides, karting, climbing wall, trade stands, bars and refreshments. Then on Saturday night, attention will focus on the Fireworks Concert which, owing to the amount of hardware, will become a Military Tattoo, with the climax being the four Royal Artillery Field Guns firing to accompany the 1812 Overture.

Field attractions for everyone

THE Pageant of Power offers more than 150 trade stands to choose from for the most fastidious of shoppers, including a lifestyle pavilion. Positioned near the start line and looking out across the water to the powerboats, is the Pageant bar, which proved very popular last year. There will also be catering outlets, Pimm’s bars, coffee stalls etc. The display by the famous JCB Dancing Diggers will wow the crowds as the stunt team push the diggers to the maximum of their capabilities. There are five giant diggers, a Bobcat loader and a Landshuttle – the fastest JCB on

the road. The stunts performed are not only difficult, but dangerous. For anyone who wants to test their skill there is the Army assault course or the climbing wall. Other activities include a simulator to race your friends round a Grand Prix track, Rebel Offroad driving for children in replica Land Rovers and Morgans, laser clay shooting and a traditional fairground. Army and police brass bands will perform throughout the weekend on stage and in the JCB arena for those wanting to relax after viewing all the action.

THERE are some significant changes to the accessibility around the circuit at this year’s Pageant of Power, thanks largely to the skill and ingenuity of the Royal Engineers. Adjoining the Bailey Bridge is a new footbridge and another has been constructed over the Ha Ha, adjoining Deer Park Lodge. The Artillery will join the Royal Engineers at this year’s show and, between them, they will bring some impressive heavy metal. l The MBT is one of the most formidable tanks in the world. It packs a punch with its 120mm armament, capable of firing in excess of 2km. It can also travel at 45kph across almost any terrain and has a bespoke protection system. l Scimitar Armoured Reconnaissance Vehicle is capable of 80kph. This CVR(T) is an essential capability for information and battlefield intelligence. It carries a 30mm Rarden cannon for self-defence. There will be three at Cholmondeley. l The Spartan Armoured Personnel Carrier has capacity for five men and two crew (commander and driver). Rather than a general personnel carrier for infantry, the Spartan is retained for moving specialist teams (eg anti-aircraft missile teams and Royal Engineer tech-

nicians) across the battlefield. l The Warrior Tracked Armoured Vehicle has the speed and performance to keep up with a Challenger 2 over the most difficult terrain and also possesses the firepower and armour to support infantry in the assault. l On the same chassis as a Challenger 2, the Trojan is crewed by engineers. With its excavator arm, mine plough and dozer blade, it is designed to open routes through battlefield obstacles and clear a path through minefields. l The Titan armoured bridge layer is based on aspects of the Challenger 2 and came into service in 2006 with the Royal Engineers. It can carry a single 26-metre long bridge or two 12-metre long bridges. It can be fitted with a bulldozer blade. l The AS-90 is a lightly-armoured self-propelled artillery piece used by five regiments of the Royal Artillery. It has a range of 30km and can fire three rounds in 10 seconds. It has a top speed of 65kph. The event charity is the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF), which for 65 years has worked tirelessly to provide support to serving soldiers, former soldiers and their families in times of need. This includes Territorial Army soldiers who are fully involved with their regular counterparts in current operations.

CROWDS

NEWSFile Death collision charges

TWO Winsford youths have appeared in court in connection with the death of a Mid-Cheshire College student. The pair, aged 16 and 17, were arrested on Saturday, January 31, hours after 17-year-old Ashley O’Brien was killed by a car on Winsford Industrial Estate as he walked home from a night out. They both appeared at Vale Royal Youth Court last Wednesday and were released on bail until August 26, when they will return to Northwich. A Crown Court hearing will then be fixed because of the seriousness of the charges. The 16-year-old is charged with causing death by dangerous driving; causing death by driving while disqualified, causing death while uninsured and aggravated vehicle-taking resulting in an accident resulting in death. The 17-year-old is charged with allowing himself to be carried in a stolen vehicle when an accident occurred resulting in death.

Christian Aid donations

VOLUNTEERS collected more than £3,000 for charity during Christian Aid Week. Residents in Winsford, Whitegate and Little Budworth gave generously from May 10-16, and the total amount raised has now been revealed as £3,432. Local organiser Brian Dunning said: “The work that Christian Aid and its partners carry out is dependent on the ongoing generosity of individuals throughout the UK. “A very big thank you to all those who helped to collect and in particular to everyone who gave so freely.”

Highway maintenance

IMPROVEMENTS costing almost £15,000 have been drawn up for part of a Kingsley road. The work, including kerbing, is proposed on a 328m length of Guests Slack between Millfield Farm and Dark Lane. Engineers say there has been erosion to the edge of the carriageway. On Mill Lane, a scheme is proposed at an estimated cost of £13,293 to reconstruct a 205m length of the footway between Mill Lane Farm and Studley House. The repairs are due to be carried out during 2009/10.

Declined medical aid

POLICE and paramedics were called out to Littler Lane, Winsford, in the early hours of Sunday morning after a 65-year-old man sustained head injuries. An ambulance was sent out at 12.30am after the pensioner was found at the roadside. He was taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, but his condition improved rapidly. Police were initially investigating whether the man had been attacked but later said he received his injuries as a result of an accident.

Repairs for road ruts

A SCHEME costing £40,414 has been drawn up by Cheshire West and Chester Council to repair the surface of part of a Little Leigh road. The work is proposed on Brakeley Lane between Shutley Lane and Runcorn Road. Engineers say a 178m length of the road would be resurfaced to fill in ruts. The repairs are due to be carried out during 2009/10, according to a report to the council’s highways and transportation committee.

Arrested after ‘fracas’

A 20-YEAR-OLD man was arrested on suspicion of assault following a fracas at a house in Winsford over the weekend. Police were called to a house on Beckenham Grove during the early hours of Saturday to an altercation involving four people. Two were hospitalised, and one person is still being sought in relation to the offence. Anyone with information is asked to contact Det Sgt Tony Jones at Winsford Neighbourhood Policing Unit on 01244 612594.

Care home summer fair

ROUNDUp Club makes its Mark

CRICKET: Barnton Cricket Club have gained specialist status after it gained Clubmark accreditation. The award is confirmation that the Broomsedge club is now officially a safe environment for juniors to play cricket. The club’s junior section is flourishing under coaches Gary Edwards (under 11s) and Keith Jones (U9s) and represents a bright future for Barnton. First XI captain and junior organiser Simon Hancock said: “The club now needs to maintain the high standards that have been introduced to the members by the main club committee. “It is the first step in the club’s ambition to get promotion into the County League and to produce junior cricketers who will be introduced into the senior teams. “It is hoped that with Clubmark, the club can improve their already impressive facilities and provide better coaching for all players. “Coach education will remain a priority over the winter months as the club will be looking to increase their junior coaching staff.”

Pat’s the way to do it

ANGLING: Pat Colgan’s team reeled in victory in Saturday’s GPO versus Barnton and Frodsham AC match at Heesoms Pool. The quartet of Colgan, Steve Furfie, Mike Smith and Calvin Tagg joined forces to weigh in with 49-12-0 ahead of Halton Joint (Harry Bentham, Ronny Durr, Mark Emmison, Steve Walker) and The Plonkers (Dave Cowley, Mick Cowley, Peter Moore, Chris Parry). Furfie continued his good luck with victory on Sunday at the Red Lion length of the River Weaver in Barnton. His 3-6-0 of roach was too good for Parry and Andrew Knight. The third round of the Junior Early Season Series on the Top Cistern on Friday saw Daniel Forster claim the eight-12 years section victory with 3-15-8 of rudd. Matthew Ayres headed the 13-16 section with 2-8-0 of skimmers and rudd. Wayne Percival won last week’s Wednesday Evening Series match on the Oak Tree length of the Weaver. His 24-12-0 of bream, crucians and tench was too good for second-placed Furfie and Arthur Kenney and Tim Wright. In the second round of the club’s Veteran Series at Anderton, John Acton netted a win with 6-13-0 of bream, roach and perch. Finally, Ian Morrison claimed victory in the third round of the Appleton Thorn AC Cup Monday Evening Series with 7-5-0 of bream and skimmers.

Sapphires suffer defeat

NETBALL: Northwich Sapphires’ third team lost out at home to Division Two leaders Rembrandt in the Warrington and District League. Mary Head won player of the match plaudits but the Sapphires went down 32-27. The first and second team did not play but all three squads are battling for summer season honours. The first team are third in the Premier Division having won six of their nine games so far while Division Two rivals and clubmates the seconds and thirds are second and fourth respectively.

Bowler Gibson mourned

CRICKET: Winnington Park CC is mourning the death of Trevor Gibson, 79, after he sadly passed away on Sunday, June 28. The once much-feared fast bowler helped Winnington Park win the Manchester Association title twice in the 1960s and also figured briefly for Cheshire. His funeral took place on Thursday last week at Springwood Crematorium, Allerton.

Sign up for a new team

FOOTBALL: Weaverham under 15s are appealing to anyone aged 14 and born on or before August 31 to sign up for summer training. The Lakehouse Field club every Tuesday at 7pm and all positions will be considered, especially goalkeeper. For further information or any queries please call Paul Birkenhead (administrator) on 07939 171893.

Chronicle July 8, 2009

Oulton smash rivals in race for glory

OULTON Park smashed leaders Bowdon at Little Budworth on Saturday to halve their points deficit at the top of the Cheshire County League Premier Division. The Pinfold Lane side are just 18 points behind their rivals after skittling the visitors for their second-lowest total in Premier action. Batting first, Park posted a decent total of 242, thanks mainly to a swashbuckling 97 HAT-TRICK HERO: from Ben Spendlove with skipRobin Taylor. per Nathan Dumelow in support JK180409OultonCrick-001 with 31.

In reply, Bowdon had no answer to Park’s attack and in particular Robin Taylor who claimed a hat-trick in his figures of 5-24. Rick Moore also featured with 3-6 as Bowdon slumped to 48 all out. ■ Oulton Park’s Danny Leech smashed a magnificent 202 on the first day of Cheshire’s Minor Counties Championship play-off with Herefordshire. Play continued at Nantwich’s Whitehouse Lane ground yesterday as the Chronicle went to press.

■ In Division Two, bottom of the league Oakmere are struggling to add to their single victory so far this season. The Overdale Lane outfit found life difficult on Saturday at second-placed Middlewich and with less than half of the season left to play, Oakmere face a tough task to avoid returning to the Meller Braggins League. Batting first, Oakmere managed just 163 with Paul Guilford hitting 56. But it was not enough as Middlewich reached 164-2.

Davenham grab derby revenge Cricket

DAVENHAM gained revenge on rivals Winnington Park on Saturday thanks to a dogged display with the bat by Mark Greaves.

The Butcher’s Stile outfit asked visiting Park to bat first on a difficult pitch and it paid off as they were reduced to 132 (Jonny Wales 48, Pete Evans 28). In reply, Davenham grabbed victory on 133-7 with an over to spare to move off the bottom of Meller Braggins Division One and above Park in the process. Greaves hit an impressive unbeaten 56 with support coming from Chris Hornby (26). The victory was Davenham’s second of the season and skipper Paul Jackson says there is more to come. “Results went for us on Saturday with Trafford also losing so another five points will see us looking like getting out of trouble. “The lads are enjoying the dogfight and things are really coming together. Our bowling attack are performing week in week out but Mark Greaves really starred with the bat on Saturday.” Elsewhere, Northwich snatched victory from the jaws of defeat as wickets tumbled in front of a big crowd at Moss Farm. Northwich declared on 197-9 (Mike Brandon 50) before visiting Mere lost five wickets in four overs on 188, with Martyn East the main beneficiary, to hand a precious victory to the hosts. In Division Two, Weaverham strolled to a comfortable derby victory over rivals Winsford at Wallerscote Road. Alan Bell’s 5-36 and James Ollier’s 4-23 helped reduce the visitors to 165. In reply, the Russetts had Jamie Allen to thank for his superb knock of 99 which led the hosts to a winning 166-2. At Broomsedge, Barnton settled for a winning draw over Lymm OP after they posted a total of 154-7.

TOUGH DAY: Oakmere batsman Craig Phelan could not help his side avoid defeat at Middlewich on Saturday. IC040709 cricket-002

Paul Coot, who struck 68, received support from Matthew Bebbington (24) while Richard Watkins starred with the ball as he took 5-28, helping to halt Lymm on 148-9. Impressive Connor earns third at Knockhill NORTHWICH race ace Connor Behan enjoyed a well-deserved share of the limelight after finishing third at the weekend. After crashing last time out at Snetterton, the 17-year-old rider from Barnton was determined to prove his doubters wrong in the sixth round of the Relentless British 125GP Championship at Knockhill.

Motorsport Having qualified in second place overall on the grid, behind championship leader Martin Glossop, Behan got off to a good start and broke away from the main pack. Glossop crashed out and a solid ride from Behan was enough to claim

third place at the Scotland track and 16 championship points – Behan’s best performance of the season so far. He now lies in eighth place overall. After the race, Behan said: “I feel happier with the bike and my performance. I’m now looking forward to Mallory Park in two weeks, where hopefully I can go a step better.” Round Seven takes the riders to

Mallory Park in Leicestershire between July 17 and 19 where Behan will seek to earn more success and force his way up the 125GP Championship table. Anyone interested in sponsoring Behan can contact juliebehan@aol.com. Further information and results can be viewed at www.connorbehan.co.uk

National champion Tom is top of the class

A WHITEGATE schoolboy has sensationally raced to double glory on the national stage.

Tom Donald, 12, won both the 100m and 200m at the Independent Schools Athletics Championships in Birmingham. But Tom, who attends Abbey Gate College in Chester, has only shot to prominence in a matter of months. Proud father John said: “The coach at his school called us and said ‘I need to talk to you about John’, so initially we thought we was in some sort of trouble. “But apparently Tom, who is only 12, was racing against 15 year olds in his school shoes and was beating them. “The coach told us he wanted to put Tom into the North of England Championships and a couple of weeks later, he had broken both the 100m and 200m records! “It’s come completely out of the blue but we are ever so proud.” Having won the regional event and backed by his parents and school, Tom took on the

Cycling by the front six and had to battle hard to finish seventh and eighth. Last Tuesday, seven Weaver Valley riders were in action in the age-related road race at Allostock. In the over 50s, Alan Kemp claimed yet another victory and was followed

Kemp, in preparation for the National Championships in two weeks time, travelled to Pocklington in North Yorkshire for the Vic Sutton Memorial Race.

Riding against a younger field, Kemp showed his experience and class with a comfortable victory. A club spokesman said: “This win will put him the most fancied rider for the championships on the tough Denbigh circuit.” The WV club run will leave the social club on Sunday at 9.30am.

best 15-year-old athletes from independent schools across the country. And unfazed by the big stage, Tom won the 100m with ease and then just half an hour later won the 200m by about 15m to become a double national champion. Tom has now joined Vale Royal Athletics Club to maximise his undoubted potential. “He is very dedicated and he is now watching what he eats,” added dad John. “We wanted to get him a coach at a local athletics club and although he still has a very long way to go, he really could go places. “One of the reasons for his success is of course his size. He is bigger than other children his age and when you see him running, he does look about 15, not 12! He’s performed wonders.” Tom, also a keen cricketer and footballer, was part of the relay team that earned third in Birmingham and is also Cheshire sprint champion.

Liam Street, from Northwich, won silver in the J13 coxed quad category along with crew members David McLellan, Sam Pierce and George McCormick and cox Calvin Perchard, also from Northwich. Liam then rowed up a year in the Junior 14

Rowing double sculls category with George McCormick and secured an impressive third place. The following day Linda Butterworth, Richard Frisk and Will Frisk from Northwich along with Runcorn RC captain Chris Edwards completed the 16th Liverpool to Chester to Liverpool Bike Ride.

Vale Royal star wins on return from America

ARCHER ENJOYS THE CITY LIFE

AFTER an award-winning season in America, Vale Royal star Nicky Archer has hit the ground running on her return to the UK.

The 23-year-old former Weaverham High School pupil is halfway though a two-year scholarship at the University of New Mexico and has been earning regional and national acclaim for her performances on the track and in cross country. And in her first competative event back on home soil since she left Cheshire for the States, Archer stormed to a sensational success wearing Vale Royal colours at the City of Manchester 10k race. Archer, who is currently staying with her parents in Kingsley, was the first female across the line in a time of 35 minutes 26 seconds, which was also good enough for seventh overall. Speaking to the Chronicle for the first time since starting her master’s degree in sports administration, Archer says she has adjusted to life in America and has has been rubbing shoulders with some international stars. She said: “It’s not so different over in America but being based at 5,000ft took a while to get used to but it’s ideal for training. Our University is used as a training base for lots of marathon and long-distance runners. Paula Radcliffe has been training there too. “Athletics was definitely the main reason for me going and of course the chance to train at altitude. The New Mexico coach

got in touch with my coach at Birmingham University and asked if I was interested in a scholarship place that was available so I jumped at the chance.” Archer, having broke several records, finished in the top-20 at the National Collegiate Athletics Association Championships and being named Mountain West Conference athlete of the week twice, is still hoping to improve on her results and earn further representative honours with one eye on the 2012 Olympics in London. “Long-term that is the goal,” she said. “At the moment I am looking at returning to America and improving on my cross country preformances and also finish higher in the national championships. “Outdoor again I want to improve my track times and maybe get out onto the roads a bit more. “It’s about being seen at the right events. I am at the AAAs next week and then that’ll probably be it for me as I need a bit of a rest before I return to the States.” Archer will be wearing the yellow and blue of Vale Royal again when she goes for glory at the AAAs at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham this weekend. Hooray Henley for Langridge and friends Rowing MATT Langridge enjoyed a comfortable victory on home waters at the weekend after Team GB’s coxless four starred at the world famous Henley Regatta. Northwich’s Olympic silver medallist, along with Alex Partridge, Alex Gregory and Richard Egington, easily defeated a rival crew from Wairiki Rowing Club of New Zealand to lift the Stewards’ Challenge Cup in front of a bumper crowd on the Thames. The success comes just at the right time for Langridge after the Team GB four came a disappointing third in the previous World Cup Regatta at Munich. Langridge and his crewmates are now fully focused on the final World Cup event at Lucerne in Switzerland this weekend. It is the last chance for the four to test themselves against rival countries before the World Championships in Poznan, Poland, next month. “To win at Henley was nice as it can be difficult and teams can slip up. It was fairly straight forward for us but we are going to have a much harder race in Lucerne. “It will be a tough test but we want to make sure EASY: Matt that we are getLangridge. ting ourselves in the best shape and make amends for Germany.” Former Northwich rowers George and Will Laughton, representing Leander, were disappointed to be knocked out of the Challenge Plate semi-final when their eight lost narrowly to Brown University, from USA. Meanwhile Northwich Rowing Club’s juniors have been enjoying success at two regattas recently. At Ironbridge, the J16 double of Shane Dickinson and Sam Coverley beat Stourport in the final while the GJ13 double of Kate Meehan and Sam Over defeated Bristol to win their event. Kate and Sam were then joined by Ashleen Hudson, Libby Weltman and cox Emma Roberts in the WJ13 quad to take the glory. Not to be outdone, the J13 crew of Nathan Jump, Zac Trigg, Liam Adamson, Tom Asteriades and cox Craig Milne outpaced Avon County to bring home the title. Closer to home at the Runcorn Junior Regatta on the Weaver, Ashleen Hudson won bronze in the J13 singles. Sam Over and Kate Meehan raced five times to take gold in the GJ13 double, and the GJ13 quad of Kate Meehan, Sam Over, Ashleen Hudson, Libby Weltman and cox Emma Roberts also raced to victory. There was equal success for the boys with the J13 double of Ryan Gamble and Alex Murphy taking gold as well as the J13 coxed quad of Nathan Jump, Alex Murphy, Liam Adamson Tom Asteriades and cox Craig Milne.
