Hunt for Tati: Human remains found in field By Lois York DETECTIVES investigating the suspected murder of Ermatati Rodgers, who vanished more than a year ago, have found human remains.

Officers made the gruesome discovery on farmland near Erddig Hall, where they have been digging for several days in connection with her disappearance. On Tuesday morning North Wales Police confirmed human remains had been discovered at the site. A police spokeswoman said: “Enquiries are under way to identify the deceased.” North Wales Police crime scene investigators were working with forensic archaeologists at the location throughout the day. Home Office pathologist Dr Brian Rogers visited the site and was due to return again. A post-mortem examination of the remains was also due to be carried out by a Home Office pathologist yesterday (Wednesday). Indonesian Ermatati, known as Tati, was last seen at the Somerfield store in Gwersyllt at about

Man is held on suspicion of murder 4.30pm on January 4, 2008, when she was captured on CCTV. Her disappearance was featured on BBC’s Crimewatch earlier this month. Ermatati, who was 41 at the time she vanished, was reported missing from her home in Bryn Awel Court, Gwersyllt, on January 5, 2008, after she failed to show for a lunch date with friends in Treuddyn, near Mold. A 27-year-old man has been re-arrested on suspicion of her murder. Uplifting new business WOMEN could improve their health, figure and posture just by wearing the correct bra, according to the owner of new Wrexham-based business Fituabra. Julie Jack, of Gresford, offers home fitting visits for women in the Wrexham, Flintshire and Chester area. The 40-year-old mum set up the business after she found a lump on her breast, which turned out to be a benign tumour. She said: “The consultant thought I had a cyst at first and told me it could have been caused by wearing the wrong size bra.” Julie had an operation to remove the tumour and then began to research the issue. She said: “Only 20% of women have been fitted correctly for a bra, that means 80% of women could be wearing the wrong size. “A lot of women just go into high

A GROUP of young Wrexham people have visited a town in Georgia as part of a volunteering project aimed at enhancing cultural links. Six young people, aged 18 to 21, visited the nation’s capital, Tbilisi, as part of the Leap of Faith Together project which hopes to develop a greater understanding amongst young people and individuals from different cultural and religious backgrounds. During the week-long visit they visited a number of youth projects, a refugee shelter for internally dis-

placed people and got to know more about life in Georgia. Man in court over boy’s road death A BUSINESSMAN has been remanded in custody on a charge of causing the death of a Wrexham schoolboy.

David James Lunn, 61, faces a number of charges relating to the fatal accident. The nine-year-old died of his injuries after being struck by two vehicles. Lunn, of Moorland Avenue, Queen’s Park, Wrexham, did not stop and then tried to pervert the course of justice by attempting to dispose of evidence, it is alleged. He is charged with the relatively new offence of causing the death of Robert James Gaunt last Thursday at a time when he was committing other offences. Lunn is not charged with causing the boy's death by the manner of

his driving, but by being involved in a fatal accident when his Jaguar was allegedly not insured and when he was not driving in accordance with a driving licence. Among the nine charges, Lunn is alleged to have failed to report the accident in Overton last Thursday, and to have failed to stop. He is then alleged to have attempted to pervert the course of justice between Thursday and Sunday by attempting to dispose of evidence, relevant to an ongoing police investigation into a fatal road accident at Premier Bodies, Old Iftan Colliery, St Martins, near Oswestry. Flintshire Magistrates Court was told he faced three charges of

no insurance on the Jaguar and a Mercedes van on another date, March 22. Details of the prosecution case were outlined by prosecutor Justin Espie, who applied for a remand in custody for various reasons, including Lunn’s own protection. Paul Abrahams, defending, did not apply for bail and said Lunn could be at risk if he was at liberty. He said there was no indication of plea at this stage. Lunn said nothing during the hearing apart from acknowledging his personal details. Magistrates heard the charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice could only be dealt with at the Crown Court. Magistrates chairman Neville

Phillips said at the end of the 10minute hearing Lunn would be remanded in custody to appear at Mold Crown Court on April 3 for a preliminary hearing. Reporting restrictions were not lifted. Police say a 58-year-old woman who was also arrested has been released on bail. Robert's parents, Dawn Richards and Robert Jones, have paid tribute to their ‘lovely lad’ and said he would be missed by his friends. Robbie, as he was known, died on Saturday in Alder Hey Hospital, Liverpool, after he was initially taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital. The incident happened on the A539 between Erbistock and the outskirts of Wrexham just before 7.30pm on Thursday.

Residents’ fire rescue

ELDERLY residents had to be evacuated after a fire broke out at a nursing home in Wrexham on Tuesday of last week. North Wales Fire and Rescue Service was called to the fire at Pendine Park Nursing Home at 5pm, Officers say it was confined to one bedroom in the property. One person was treated for smoke inhalation after 37 were rescued. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Prize guys focus on elderly care A TEAM from Wrexham County Borough Council finished runner-up at a competition aimed at improving writing and communication skills for new employees. Roger Davies, executive support officer, and Jonathon Edwards, senior performance and improvement officer, represented Wrexham at the Young Local Authority of the Year competition for Welsh and Scottish councils.

Roger and Jonathon had to present a paper on the subject of financing care for the elderly at the Lancaster event. Their six-minute presentation looked at the question ‘as the population becomes ever older and the cost of looking after the elderly ever higher, how is care to be financed?’. Wrexham finished second out of the 49 authorities which took part in the contest.

Residents enjoy orchestral interlude By Eleanor Barlow A GROUP of residents from a care organisation produced a ‘magical and moving’ performance by collaborating with an orchestra.

The concert at Pendine Park, Wrexham, was the culmination of a series of music workshops with the Hallé. Each of the organisation’s six homes was represented. Using water as its main theme, the culmination performance was a multimedia experience involving three compositions, artwork, photography and poetry. The project was the result of Pendine Park’s links with Arts and Business Cymru. Last year Pendine Park’s long-standing relationship with artist-in-residence Sarah Edwards was recognised by Arts and Business Cymru. Sarah and proprietor Mario Kreft were presented with a Sustainability Award because of their ‘truly inspirational’ work with residents. As well as her art classes and visits to art galleries, Sarah organises photography sessions – but music is a new departure. The sessions were run by Hallé pianist Janet Simpson and cellist David Petri.

Janet said: “It’s been amazing because of the life experience the residents bring. “They became so involved and focused and the main thing is they are enjoying it. “But it’s more than just enjoyment, it’s been really moving. It touches something in them and it touches something in the musician as well.” Sarah said: “We have not tried anything quite like this before and nobody could anticipate how it would work, or whether it would work, so to see the look on the residents’ faces made all the

hard work worthwhile. “It was magical – residents felt it, staff felt it, musicians felt it and the audience felt it.” Resident Susan Mullally said: “We didn’t know what to expect but the Hallé have done a splendid job getting us playing all kinds of weird things. It’s been quite fascinating.” Pendine Park proprietor Mario said: “I have been in the care sector for more than 20 years and, while we have had many inspiring experiences, this ranks with the very best.”

Blind 99-year-old left without helpline

Authority wins honour

By Eleanor Barlow A BLIND and deaf pensioner was forced to spend two nights without access to the emergency helpline she relies on because her phoneline went down and no back-up service was available. Eveline Capper, of Gwersyllt, is 99 and, as well as being blind and deaf, has a broken hip and heart problems. She relies on the Care Call system, a pendant with a button which can be pressed in the event of an emergency, to get help. But when her BT line went down on Thursday, making the service unusable, and her daughter-in-law, Carol Capper, phoned to report the problem she was told the pensioner was not a priority and would have to wait until Monday for the line to be fixed – in fact, it was repaired on Saturday. Mrs Capper said: “She is a vulnerable woman with serious medical conditions and yet she is not treated as a priority. “Anything could happen if she gets ill in the night and is not able to get help.” Mrs Capper said she was later told by BT the line would be fixed by Friday, but a spokesman for the company said because of the nature of the problem it would not be fixed until the next day. He said: “A high-sided vehicle brought down an overhead cable. We fully appreciated the situation. “A response was made within four hours because the customer is on a Total Care line but unfortunately we cannot get the job done any faster.” The service costs £13 a month and is provided by Wrexham County Borough Council. Mrs Capper said: “BT has been un-

Staff rise to charity peak challenge

STAFF of a Wrexham care home set their sights high in support of Comic Relief. Six colleagues from the Gwern Alyn Residential Home, part of Pendine Park, climbed 1,800ft to the summit of Moel Famau, the highest peak in the Clwydian Range. The four-mile hike was the idea of manager Cindy Clutton, who was joined by colleagues Lauren Rose, Stacey Sutton, Karen Brown, Ceri Smith and Diane Roberts. They have raised £250 so far. Their colleagues at the Hillbury Home wore pyjamas for work – the idea of home manager Mildred Heywood, who was supported by 15 members of staff. “Everyone, including the kitchen staff, was happy to take part, though some wore fancy dress instead of pyjamas,” said Mildred. A charity concert is also planned for April 3, featuring a disco and entertainers, it will be held at Bersham Sports and Social Club, with proceeds to the Alzheimer’s Society. In the final months of her life her image was everywhere as she admitted she was setting out to make as much money as possible to provide for her two young sons when the end came. And who could blame her? Ever since she first appeared on Big Brother it seemed everyone wanted to know every detail of her life, whether to scorn, ridicule or even admire her. But to many it’s impossible to comprehend why so many people are seduced by reality TV

stars who have no apparent talent and seek attention by acting outrageously before TV cameras. How sad when it came to Jade Goody that the TV audience looked on as she was given the devastating news she had cancer. Since then we watched as chemotherapy stole her hair, as she prepared for her wedding and christened her children as she herself was baptised. Now she has gone perhaps it’s time to take a serious look at reality TV shows so we never create another Jade Goody. But the answer to all those who sneered and ridiculed as her tragic life drew to it’s inevitable close is the good her decision to share her fight against cancer so publicly has proved to be. Cancer screening experts have reported a massive surge in the number of young women coming forward for screening – some for the first time. If as a result, just one young life is saved, then Jade Goody has left a legacy far better than her tawdry TV image.

WHAT a great gift of £10,000 for Wales Air Ambulance from Ifor Williams Trailers Corwen. This charity needs £1,000 for every mission, but what is that compared to saving lives? The cost of running it is to rise to about £5m this year as they have to upgrade them to have new GPSs as the old helicopters don’t have them. They have to rely on charity in this day and age as millions of pounds is spent on unnecessary things by this Government as all they think of is themselves – as we all know (large expenses, etc). This charity, Welsh Air Ambulance, and the lifeboats, deserve money from this Government because the work they do saving lives is tremendous and can be very dangerous. I had a fortunate rescue a few years ago and am lucky to be alive as the lifeboat rescued me and my friend from the sea at Llandudno. So if people see any of these charities collecting for Welsh Air Ambulance or the RNLI please give generously as it seems it’s the only way of getting money as this Government does not give a damn about these worthy causes. Party is wrong to reject Europe IT DIDN’T get any Press coverage and almost no-one considered it to be a newsworthy event, however, around this time last week media outlets were reporting the recent Conservative Party decision to pull out of the centre right voting bloc, the EPP, in the European Union. Previously the Conservative Party had been a member of the European People’s Party, the main group of centre-right European parties. However, now the Conservative Party has pulled out of this mainstream grouping and finds itself isolated in Europe. The Conservatives have opted to form their own grouping but the only allies David Cameron has so far found for his new group are the Czech Civic Democrat Party (ODS) and the Polish Law and Justice (PiS) Party. Each of these parties have had moments of extremism in the past. Vaclav Klaus, the founder of the Czech ODS, has said climate change is a global myth and the PiS has attracted criticism for its at-

titude to gay rights. PiS MP Artur Gorski warned that the election of Barack Obama would mean “an impending catastrophe and the end of the civilisation of the white man”. Frankly, I am in no way surprised at this latest move by the Conservative Party. It has always been sceptical of involvement in Europe and this move will leave it totally isolated in Europe. I would be incredibly worried about the effect of this move in the event that the Conservative Party was to once again lead Britain. We work and trade a great deal with our European partners and a great deal of UK finance relies on working with Europe.

I believe this income would be under threat should David Cameron ever be elected Prime Minister. I also think voters in the impending European Elections should consider this latest Conservative move. A tick in the Tory box would result in our representatives losing credibility in Europe and perhaps total isolation from the mainstream politics of the European Union. I normally try to steer clear of political themes for this column. However, the Tories have found themselves isolated in Europe on too many occasions. They are the only party in the world urging global banks to do nothing to fight the recession and now they wish to alienate themselves on every issue in Europe. This move is deeply concerning and something that everyone in Clwyd South should know about as it effects them a great deal. Given the global world in which we live, any party that is not serious in Europe cannot possibly be a serious option for the UK.

Recruit’s bid to reduce crime By Eleanor Barlow THE campaign to reduce crime in Wrexham has been given a boost thanks to a key appointment by a police watchdog body. Anna Humphreys is excited at the prospect of her role as a policy officer with North Wales Police Authority. A native of Caernarfon, Ms Humphreys gained a degree in Politics and European Studies at John Moores University, Liverpool, then completed a Masters degree in Global Security at Keele. On her return to North Wales, she worked for Gwynedd Council in a number of posts, latterly as monitoring officer with the

Anna Humphreys Crime and Safety Partnership, which sparked her interest in police work. She said: “At the Community Safety Partnership my job was to collate performance data, looking at different projects and how

they were performing to help them direct strategies effectively. “The aim of the partnerships is to bring together councils, police authorities, police forces and other agencies to try and work together to reduce crime. “By working together, we can be far more effective at reducing crime. I think the Police Authority has a very important role in being a bridge between the force and the people of North Wales. “There is already a successful track record of cooperation which has been instrumental in reducing crime. As a result, North Wales Police is one of the best performing forces in England and Wales.”

Police warn of North Wales bank scam POLICE are urging the public to be aware of a scam operating in the North Wales area. The warning comes after two elderly women were contacted by a man with an Asian accent, claiming to be from NatWest.

The caller knew the women's names and that they had accounts with the bank. He told the women they had been overcharged on their accounts and that NatWest owed them money.

The man then asked for their bank account details as confirmation. Police are advising people if they are contacted by someone claiming to be from the bank not to give any details to the caller.

f ever a colour was designed to banish the gloom, it’s yellow. This versatile shade oozes energy and optimism and even just a splash of it can instantly brighten a room.

Small wonder then that yellow – already established as a firm favourite for this year’s fashions – is now blooming in interiors as designers make it the star colour for everything from fabrics to lamps. There’s a dazzling choice of interpretations. Turning on to yellow could prove to be colour therapy in our troubled times, says Claire Hornby, creative stylist at furnishing store group Barker & Stonehouse. “Summer’s still a long way off but a great way to cheer yourself up through the gloom, as we head for brighter days, is to decorate with a shade that’s fresh and vibrant,” she says. “Colour does affect our mood and yellow is definitely the one to go for, and can give you a personal spot of sunshine at home.” Yellow can also have the effect of making small, dark rooms feel bigger or simply giving an injection of ‘wow’ factor to functional rooms such as kitchens, studies and hallways. Louise Smith, colour and design manager for Dulux, is a big fan of the sunny shades. “Yellow is a clear, bright and uplifting colour, which lightens and is welcoming when used in interiors,” she says.

If you’re wild for yellow, be bold on walls. Paint a feature wall for instant impact or use it on woodwork contrasted with cream walls. “To create a soft, inviting look, start with classic creamy yellows which will bring warmth to spaces with limited light,” Smith says. “For something more lively, experiment with strong mustard yellows and cool greys to create a really dynamic room.” Her tip: Use Dulux’s radiant yellows, Lemon Pie and Pale Citrus, teamed with soft creams like Timeless. Both start from £99. Window blinds are an easy way of ensuring a sunny outlook. Go for Dunelm Mill’s Sunflower blackout blind, from £6.99, or Buttercup Eyelet Roller Blind, from £9.99 at Focus DIY. Yellow furniture in a room will command attention, so make sure the design and quality of a piece is sound. “A yellow statement piece of furniture – like a sofa or chair – is a great way to update and lift a room and give it a new lease of life for spring,” says Gillian Anderson, trading director at Heal’s. Its range brims with yellow pieces, including the Cube Loveseat armchair (from £1,495), which is available in a canary yellow fabric. The matching padded Cube screen starts from £950. The Love Chair, £999 from Barker & Stonehouse, is another elegant winner with its smattering of yellow hearts on the chair back. AS part of Fairtrade Fortnight a Wrexham tea dance group provided Fairtrade refreshments. The tea dance, held every Monday at the Memorial Hall, marked the fortnight by serving Fairtrade coffee, tea and cake. The refreshments were donated by the Co-op and more than 60 dancers enjoyed the event. WREXHAM Labour MP Ian Lucas has backed a move to allow young people to use the Commons chamber for a debate. Mr Lucas was among MPs who voted to allow the United Kingdom Youth Parliament to use the chamber later this year, when MPs are not sitting, to hold a debate. He said: “I try to involve young people in my constituency in politics as much as I can. “It is clear from talking to young people that they have a keen interest in politics and the United Kingdom Youth Parliament helps that interest to grow. “I am very pleased that the overwhelming majority of MPs from all parties voted with me to allow the Youth Parliament to use the Commons Chamber to hold a debate.”

NEARLY 500 talented young golfers will be showing off their skills to raise money for charity during the coming weeks. So far 160 teams have signed up to Shelter Cymru’s Junior Golf Championship. The event will be held at courses across Wales during March and April, including Clays Golf Club, Wrexham, on Monday, April 6. The competition is aimed at all junior golfers in Wales who have an official club handicap. Teams can represent their school, college or golf club. Winter fuel payments too late

WARNING: Eleanor Burnham. A LIBERAL Democrat AM has criticised the Government over late winter fuel payments. Eleanor Burnham, Welsh Lib Dem AM for North Wales, claims payments for 12,200 elderly people in North Wales – nearly one in 10 – to help with fuel bills will not be paid until nearly Easter. Ms Burnham said: “The lateness of these payments is appalling. “At a time of sky-high heating and fuel bills, paying the bonus three months late is just not good enough. “The Government must ensure payments are made promptly next Christmas. “The Chancellor, Alistair Darling, stood up in the House of Commons in November and promised pensioners a Christmas bonus on their winter fuel payments, but clearly this was nothing of the sort. “It is outrageous this money will not be reaching pensioners until so late in the year. Ms Burnham added: “Help the Aged have expressed their concern about the impact the ‘heating or eating’ dilemma will have on the increasing number of winter deaths among over-65s in Wales. “The Government needs to act now as a matter of urgency.”

Residents warned over digital TV switch WREXHAM will switch completely to digital television before the end of the year. The current analogue signal will be switched off in two stages. BBC 2 will disappear on October 28 and remaining stations on November 25. Viewers will then tune to the new digital service. Many Wrexham viewers can also receive Granada and other stations via the Winter Hill transmitter.

SECONDARY school pupils in Wrexham will get the chance to help produce a DVD aimed at showing young people the dangers of alcohol abuse. Wrexham County Borough Council’s Healthy Schools team has teamed up with North Wales Police and Community Trust (PACT) to invite all secondary schools to produce and present a short drama on the issues of alcohol misuse. Each school will also be invited to have its drama recorded by a professional filming company, which will then produce a DVD for the school. St Christopher’s will be the first secondary school to take part in the scheme and will perform their drama before an audience of pupils before Easter. Other secondary schools in the area will complete their performances during the summer term. Healthy Schools co-ordinator Alan Williams said: “It’s important children are made aware of the dangers of alcohol misuse and we’re looking to get the message across.”

Police help Cubs to be prepared

THE number of young people taking part in volunteering in Wales is set to increase through a partnership of organisations from the voluntary, public and private sectors, which includes North Wales Police. GwirVol will be led by young people themselves through GwirForce – a panel of young people who sit on the partnership – and supported by youth volunteer advisors in each of the 22 Welsh local authorities. The initiative, to be launched on Monday, April 6, will give out £500,000 in grants including £110,000 through local grant panels.

James’ joy after university gold run Athletics WREXHAM Athletic Club’s James Mills is celebrating one of the biggest victories of his burgeoning career, writes Harriet Jones. The long-distance ace won men’s 1,500m gold at the British Universities and Colleges Sport Championships in Sheffield. And the Bath University student’s success was made all the sweeter given he had to settle for silver last year. Mill said: “I was second last year so I wanted to come back this year and go one better. I came in to the race looking for a win. I’ve worked hard and prepared myself well, so I was confident I had the ability to do it.” In a tightly fought race, Mills took an early lead and never looked back. But he said: “The race was probably a bit messier than I had planned. My start didn’t go to plan and there were spikes flying everywhere, so I’ve got a nice cut on my leg now. “But a wins a win, it doesn’t matter how it’s done at the end of the day. As long as I come out with the result I want I’m happy with my performance and that’s what happened.”
