Donation for love of Olivia By Ronnie Parry

FAMILY and friends of crash victim six-year-old Olivia Wood have brought music to the ears of children at her Wrexham school.

Olivia, of Gwersyllt, was killed in a car accident along with her grandmother Linda Wood, 59, and great-aunt Ann Hargreaves, 71. Her parents Darren and Julie have used money donated at the funerals to buy a piano for Gwersyllt CP School. Friends of the couple raised money, bringing the total to more than £7,000.

Along with the piano, which has been fitted with a plaque in memory of Olivia, a cheque for £1,000 has been given to the school. Donations are also being made to Hope House Children’s Hospice. Mr and Mrs Wood, along with other family members, were on hand to present the piano to the school. They’re now hoping to sponsor an annual award in Olivia’s name, which will be made to a child showing determination and effort throughout the school year. Mr Wood, who works at Kimberly-Clark, Flint, said the family wanted to give the school something to benefit children for years to come, and felt a piano was a fitting tribute. He said: “Olivia loved to sing and she loved to dance. The school said the piano they had was more than 20 years old so it seemed the ideal thing to buy in honour of Olivia. “We’ve had other donations too, such as £500 from Kimberly-Clark, but there was an amazing fundraising event friends held in a pub, which raised almost £2,000 through raffles and various things. “We’re taken aback by the generosity shown and feel proud Olivia obviously meant so much to so many people. It’s given us something to focus on, and if we can continue to raise

I know Olivia, my mum and aunty would be very proud.” The couple are looking to set up a tribute fund in Olivia’s name through Hope House.

Gwersyllt headteacher Neil Gledhill said: “We’re deeply honoured to receive this piano from Julie and Darren. We’re certain children will benefit over many years to come. It’ll certainly bring a smile to people’s faces, which is what

INSIDE STORY

Politician leads fight to boost orders for factory WREXHAM MP Ian Lucas has pledged to work with unions, staff and management to help boost the town’s Remploy factory. Mr Lucas was part of a major campaign to save the disabled workers’ plant in 2007. He brought the minister in charge of the

Remploy reorganisation programme to Wrexham to hear from workers and unions in a bid to save the plant from closure. With the plant’s future secured, Mr Lucas is now working with staff and management at the plant to try and secure fresh orders for them.

As part of this, an open day at the plant is being held tomorrow (Friday). Mr Lucas has written to council bosses, public bodies and politicians across North Wales to encourage them to attend. Council officials, chief executives, MPs and AMs and the heads of organisations

The programme contains four elements, physical recreation, skills, hillwalking, which includes a two-day expedition, and community service. Under the ‘skills’ section credits are obtained which go toward further education courses. Though he had never before participated in such strenuous outdoor activities, Will began to enjoy getting out into the countryside and took to it so readily he has since persuaded some of his mates to join him on hikes in Snowdonia. He made such good progress that he has helped Mr Morris deliver a similar programme for other offenders, and was equally successful in the other elements, all led by experienced, qualified supervisors. He has also amassed a total of 10 Open College Network certificates, which should boost his chances of finding employment. Will is now planning to return to Yale College to resume his studies.

A WREXHAM man has created a bit of history by becoming the first in the United Kingdom to gain a national qualification after probation officers helped him to turn his life around. In September 2007 Will Hughes was given a two-year supervision order by magistrates after admitting a drinkdriving offence. He did not have a driving licence and was under the influence when he was involved in a collision. “That was the most stupid thing I ever did, but in the long run it has helped me because of what has happened since then,” he said. Now 21, Will has followed to the letter the tasks set down for him by the North Wales Probation Area, and been supervised by Gareth Morris, deputy manager for North Wales of the Community Justice Intervention Wales (CJIW). Will has become the first in the country to gain an Endeavour Award, which is similar to the Duke of Edinburgh Award, through the YMCA.

Hospital clear of norovirus infection AN outbreak of the Norovirus winter vomiting bug has finally been cleared at a hospital which was inundated with cases.

But Wrexham Maelor Hospital chiefs admit the infection could have been wiped out sooner if they had not compromised quarantine procedures to deal with a surge in emergency admissions. The hospital was given the all-clear on Monday after months battling the infection. At one point, shortly after New Year, about 100 patients were infected and 10 wards shut. Trust bosses had asked people to think twice about visiting friends and relatives to help stop the spread. But North Wales NHS Trust bosses said the hospital had to balance a shut down on patient movement during winter against a massive surge in emergency admissions which prolonged the outbreaks. And it does not mean there won’t be any more cases of norovirus this year

as doctors admit the so-called winter vomiting bug is now an all-year round problem. Trust spokesman Andy Scotson said: “We had a small outbreak last week but we isolated it and at the moment we have no official cases of norovirus. “But it was prolonged because staff had to balance juggling patients when we had a sharp rise in admissions with procedures to contain the infection.” A report to the Trust pointed out: “Norovirus was once a seasonal problem and caused disruption mostly in wintertime, hence its former name ‘wintervomiting’. “However, we are now experiencing problems with this organism all year long. “The infection control policy was not adhered to in full and the result of this flexibility in bed management in response to the severe and sustained pressure on beds resulted in further spread of the illness and thus an extended duration of the outbreak.”

NEWSFile Assault remand

A WREXHAM man has been remanded in custody following an alleged attack on his pregnant partner which left her with a fractured cheek bone and a perforated ear drum. Michael Brian Hatton, 27, of Connor Crescent, Wrexham, is charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on mother-of-five Donna Marie Jones at her home on May 29. He appeared in custody before Flintshire Magistrates Court in Mold charged with GBH and common assault on her on May 29, then damaging her door and resisting the police on May 31. Andrew Holmes, defending, applied for bail and suggested Hatton could live with relatives at Winsford. He said magistrates could also ban him from entering the Wrexham area but he was remanded in custody to appear before Wrexham Magistrates Court pending committal to the Crown Court.

WREXHAM children have had the opportunity to experience a range of water activities in their swimming lessons, as part of the Kellogg’s Swim Active and Royal Life Saving Society’s (RLSS UK) Aquatic Festivals. Children in Year 5 and Year 6 have been able to learn water polo, try snorkelling, synchronised swimming and take part in the Royal Lifesaving Society’s (RLSS UK) Rookie Lifeguard. Rookie Lifeguard is a children’s water safety skills programme run by the Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS UK) for eight- to 12-year-olds. It teaches children how to keep themselves safe in and around the water, providing them with valuable techniques for rescue, resuscitation and calling for help. Helen Laidler, swimming and aquatic development officer for Wrexham County Borough Council, said: “All the activities have been extremely well received by the children who took part and we hope they will want to continue. It is a joy to see children being active, enjoying the pool and learning lifesaving skills.”

NEWSFile Phone theft admitted

A MAN has admitted the “mean” offences of stealing his girlfriend’s mobile phone off her pillow. Royston Martin Jones, 47, of Pen y Wern, Rhos, admitted theft – and that put him in breach of an earlier sentence. But Mold Crown Court heard that since Jones had moved to Wrexham he had made good efforts to get over his heroin addiction. The judge, Mr Recorder John Jenkins QC, said he would give him a chance to get his life in order. Jones was placed on an 18-month community order. It will include 12 months supervision and he will also follow 26 sessions of an offender substance abuse programme. The judge said it had been a mean offence to steal his girlfriend’s telephone while she slept. He had sold it for £20 to feed his drug habit. Jones had a bad record for dishonesty, was subject to a nine month prison sentence suspended for 18 months, and it was his fourth breach of the suspended sentence. But he had admitted what he had done and the phone had eventually been recovered. “You are not a risk to the public, you are more of a risk to yourself,” the judge told him. The offence did not pass the custody threshold and the sentence would “help you get your life back on track”.

Colleagues racing to help good causes COLLEAGUES in a Wrexham company are vying to keep one step ahead of each other – but their friendly rivalry is all in a good cause.

Over the next few weeks four members of staff at chartered accountants Coxey’s will be stepping out in three different charity events in the hope of raising a mountain of money for local good causes. On Sunday business support manager Helen Wright will join thousands of other women in the annual Race For Life 5k in Chester in aid of Cancer Research. She is guaranteed to have company all the way round the course, as she plans to push her one-year-old daughter Chloe in her pushchair. Also lining up for the event for the first time will be her friends and colleagues Lisa Hinze, from Hope, and Rhian Williams, from Southsea. Running alongside Lisa will be her daughter Imogen,

By Antonia Merola 11, a pupil of Ysgol Estyn. Later in the month – on Saturday, June 27 – Jayne Williams, from Llwyn Isa, Wrexham, will take things a little more leisurely when she takes part in the annual 10-mile Midnight Walk across Wrexham for Nightingale House Hospice. Last year she was among 1,700 women who raised £160,000 toward the hospice’s palliative care services. Jayne has previously taken part in the Race For Life in Rhyl. In September Helen, from Llay, will be joined by her partner Michael Mort in a 10k Race For Life run in Tatton Park, Cheshire. Unlike the 5ks, men are also allowed to take part in that event. “Like everyone who takes part in these events, we all know someone or have a relative who has suffered from cancer,” said Jayne.

Tories win over voters

TORY leader David Cameron called for a General Election as he celebrated his party toppling Labour in Wales for the first time since Lloyd George was in Parliament.

The Conservatives swept into first place in constituencies across Wales in the European polls, winning in 17 of the 40 Westminster constituencies. Labour suffered dismal returns, as the Conservatives finished first in Wrexham, Clwyd South, Alyn and Deeside, Delyn, Clwyd West, Vale of Clwyd and Montgomeryshire. The Conservatives pushed Labour into second place for the first time since the 1918 General Election, and Labour lost one of its two European seats to the UK Independence Party. Plaid Cymru came third, with the UK Independence Party claiming the fourth Welsh seat for the first time. Mr Cameron arrived at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay pledging his party to work harder to secure the trust of the electorate. He told a gathering of party supporters: “It would be a great toppling of Labour MPs if these results were repeated in a General Election. “People in Wales are responding to the values of the modern Conservative Party. They know we need thrift in government, more responsibility in our society to deal with the problems of crime and anti-social behaviour.” Mr Cameron said Labour’s appalling result was a reflection of its weakness and failures to reform public services. But Wrexham MP Ian Lucas said the action being taken by the UK Government in response to the worldwide economic downturn would be at risk if a Conservative Government was elected in the next General Election. Mr Lucas highlighted what he says are Conservative plans to cut investment in public services. He said: “We are already seeing the Tory-Lib Dem Council in Wrexham cutting services such as the Finney Close Centre for respite care and The Venture in Caia Park. Such cuts would be as nothing as compared with what would happen if David Cameron was in Government. “The era of low unemployment and economic prosperity which has characterised Wrexham since 1997 is now under the direct threat of a Tory Government at Westminster. “In addition, the benefits for the weakest in society, such as the pensioners’ winter fuel allowance, are at risk.” He added: “The country must now hold its nerve and build on the action taken by the Labour Government to combat the recession. There is no better person to lead this effort than Gordon Brown who has worked tirelessly to beat the worldwide downturn. “The European election results show Wrexham is a two-horse race between Labour and the Tories and that Lib-Dem propaganda about them having a chance in the seat is nothing but hot air.” Former Plaid Cymru leader Dafydd Wigley fears the party “seriously missed

Mr Wigley pointed to the SNP’s success in out-polling Labour in Scotland and Plaid’s squashed aspiration to win a second Euro seat in Wales. He said: “There was the opportunity to come through as the largest party in Wales, but we missed the opportunity,” UKIP’s successful lead candidate John Bufton said the result was proof it was time for Gordon Brown to go. Addressing the Prime Minister, he said: “We have taken your seat, and from a place we started from so low down we have come back with vigour and fight and the people of Wales are better for it.” In a joint statement, Welsh Secretary Peter Hain and First Minister Rhodri

Morgan admitted the extent of the defeat. “There is a real anger about politicians’ expenses and as we have been the party in power we have caught the brunt of the public’s anger,” they said. “This is a toxic combination when taken with the economic recession. Low turnout has further reduced the Labour vote. “Above all, we have got to listen to the message that the public is so clearly giving us. It is vital Labour remains united and begins rebuilding trust.” The Liberal Democrats failed to pick up their first Welsh MEP, polling 73,082. Re-elected Plaid MEP Jill Evans said the Conservatives were not the “natural party of Wales”, despite topping the poll. “We campaign to be the biggest party in Wales and we’ll keep on,” she said.

NEWSFile Accused not a gangster

A man who had a 4.10 shotgun in his garden shed was not a gangster, Mold Crown Court was told. Andrew Bellis, 46, had simply used the gun for shooting vermin, his barrister Mark Roberts explained. Bellis, of Ffordd Llanerch, Penycae, admitted possessing the firearm when banned because of a previous prison sentence and handling stolen goods. He was jailed for 10 months. Gareth Parry, prosecuting, told the court police went to Bellis’s home and recovered a chainsaw and another saw which had been stolen in a burglary at a local farm. But they also found the firearm in a sack in the shed. It was found to be in working order and was successfully test fired by a police armourer. Mr Roberts said Bellis appreciated there were dangers with having unregulated and unlicensed firearms in the community, particularly if they were to fall into the wrong hands. “But he is at pains to point out he is not a gangster,” said Mr Roberts. “It was simply for pest control. He has not, and he would not, have committed any offence with it.” He had not used it for a significant period of time. Judge Philip Hughes said he took into account no ammunition for the weapon had been found. “Those with convictions for violence must be prevented from carrying firearms until five years have elapsed,” he said.

Custody inevitable

A YOUNG man from Wrexham has admitted a wounding charge. David Adam Humphreys, 25, of Y Wern, Wrexham, admitted wounding Mark Owen Jones during an incident on March 1 this year. Humphreys was remanded in custody pending sentence at Mold Crown Court and was warned by Judge John Rogers QC that custody would be inevitable.

Bard of Barking’s mine of memories SINGER-songwriter Billy Bragg will perform in Wrexham as part of a tour to commemorate the 1984-85 miners’ strike and its legacy on communities. He will play at the William Aston Hall, Glyndw ˆ r University, tomorrow (Friday). Ex-punk, ex-soldier, and ex-Labour Party member Bragg rose from working class origins in the 80s to become one of the UK’s foremost pop and protest singers and left-wing icons. His defining political moment came with the miners’ strike of 1984-85, when he became a fixture at political rallies and benefits with his powerful pro-union songs including Which Side Are You On, There Is Power In A Union and the EP title track Between The Wars. A rebel in every sense, Bragg is best-known for his passionately political lyrics and admired for his love songs. He has a sense of humour and continues to prove that music still has something to say about political causes. ■ Tickets are £17 (£16 concessions) and are available from HMV in Wrexham and Glyndw ˆ r University Sports Centre in person. They are also on sale at Wrexham Tourist Information Centre and at www.seetickets.com.

Champion challenge on target A WREXHAM woman who is no stranger to voluntary work and supporting good causes has taken on a new challenge. Deborah Parry-Edwards has become the first person in North Wales to take up the Champions’ Challenge to raise £1,000 for the charity Sparks, which funds medical research into children’s illnesses. The charity is hoping to recruit 1,000 champions and Deborah was signed up by the organisation’s all-Wales fundraiser, Nia Williams. Deborah is well on her way to achieving her target, having raised more than £170 through a small-scale local collection but she is hoping a cheese-and-wine and karaoke evening she is staging tomorrow (Friday) at Wrexham Rugby Club will see her past £1,000. Nia, who formerly worked for Nightingale House Hospice, turned to Deborah for help because she knew of her organisational skills through their links with the rugby club. Nia, who took up her post in April, is keen to raise awareness of Sparks, which benefits children and mums across Wales.

Alternative festival is ‘labour of love’

FESTIVAL SCENE: The Workhouse Festival in Llanfyllin, near Welshpool. THERE’S a strong local flavour to this year’s Workhouse Festival in Powys on the weekend starting Friday, July 10. The event, in Llanfyllin, near Welshpool, is Wales’s most upbeat and eclectic music festival. Its friendly atmosphere resonates with energy and creativity and the Workhouse is the closest summer festival to Wrexham. The 5,000 capacity means its reputation as one of the best small festivals has been built on alternative energy, traditional craft, music, good food and bringing together communities. A strong line-up of international and local performers features bands such as The Blockheads, The Holloways and Neck and Wrexham’s Roseville Band. Attractions include a dance tent, acoustic lounge, world music venue, cabaret tent, cinema, green crafts, a family section, circus, workshops and arts and crafts.

By Ronnie Parry The festival was set up six years ago as a fundraiser for the derelict Workhouse building being restored by The Llanfyllin Dolydd Building Preservation Trust charity. The festival is not-for-profit and independent, with an atmosphere a lot of the bigger festivals have lost, claims organiser Ben Scott. He said: “I’ve always enjoyed going to festivals so we decided to put one on to raise money for the Workhouse project. “All profits are donated to it. It’s a labour of love and keeps us busy but it’s worth it when you see the fields full of festival goers.” ■ It is £69 for an adult three-day camping ticket and £39 for a youth (ages 13-17) ticket. Couple lose second son in suicide tragedy A WREXHAM man who never came to terms with several family tragedies turned to drink and killed himself in secluded woodland near his home.

The body of Paul Stephen Davies, 40, was found hanging at Moss Valley Golf Club on September 6, a week after he went missing. A suicide note was found at the scene, an inquest at Wrexham was told. Paul had been living with his parents David and Susan Davies, of Epworth Close, Moss, since the break up with his partner. Mr Davies said Paul’s first marriage ended in tragedy when his wife died from an asthma attack at the age of 28. He then married second wife Debbie, but they broke up and he went to live with another woman, later returning to live at home when they had a row.

Cash boost WREXHAM and District Flyfishing Association (WDFA) has been given a boost in its bid to improve the environment. Keep Wales Tidy has awarded it £500 through the Tidy Towns Project. The cash has been made possible by funding from the National Assembly for Wales’s Local Environmental Quality Improvement Projects Fund and will be used to help cover insurance, tools and equipment. WDFA chairman John Crowcott said: “The WDFA would like to thank Keep Wales Tidy for their support.”

Mr Davies said: “He came home crying. One day I found him lying in the back garden with an empty vodka bottle. “But he never said to me he would harm himself. He was a self-employed driver and we later found out he was facing a drinkdriving charge, which would have finished him off. But he didn’t tell me he was in court.” Mr Davies said he was aware his son had made previous attempts to harm himself. On one occasion he had sent a text to the police saying he was going to harm himself, so they were aware he was suicidal. Mr Davies added: “He was devastated when his brother Mark killed himself in his car at the age of 22 and by the death of his first wife.” The inquest was told a large-scale search was launched when Paul went missing, involving police and the RAF Valley mountain rescue team.

His body was found in woodland at Moss Golf Club. Paul’s second wife, Debbie Davies, said her ex-husband had been wonderful after they married but later turned to drink and would hide bottles in the shed and attic. She said: “I started nurse training and he got angry about that and got violent. But he was lovely without drink. “He asked me for a divorce on Christmas Eve, 2006.” John Gittens, acting North East Wales coroner, read out several medical reports which revealed Paul had undergone psychiatric treatment in 2007. He was dependent on alcohol and felt stressed. A post-mortem examination revealed death was due to hanging, although Paul had also taken a massive overdose of paracetamol – three times the accepted toxic level. Mr Gittens recorded a verdict of suicide.

RED RIVALS: White Lion landlord Phil Bradshaw with Liverpool FC supporter customer Ian Wynn, who won the mystery draw after picking bitter rivals Manchester Utd. VH020609draw-03 AS A lifelong Koppite, the last team Ian Wynn wanted to win the Premiership title was Manchester United. And when Liverpool’s bitter rivals overhauled the Anfield Reds to clinch the championship it made the disappointment even harder to take. But an envelope draw at the White Lion, Hope, changed all that when Ian walked away with £300. He explained: “At the start of the

By Mike Brennan season 20 regulars buy an envelope and put in a pound a week. “All the envelopes have a mystery team. They are drawn out at half-time in the Cup Final – and mine was United.” Regulars looked on in amazement as jubilant Ian launched into a chorus of Glory, Glory Man United.

“That was the first time I have ever sung that song – and it will definitely be the last!” he said. But there may be an opportunity to share Ian’s musical moment if pub landlord Phil Bradshaw, an admirer of the Old Trafford team, follows through on his threat. “Phil reckons he captured me on the closed circuit TV cameras and is going to put it on YouTube,” said Ian.

Library grant welcomed WREXHAM Labour AM Lesley Griffiths is delighted the town’s library is to receive £337,000 for refurbishments. It forms part of the National Assembly for Wales’s £3.5m new funding for Welsh libraries as part of its three-year Libraries for Life programme, which aims to get more people using public services. The funding will be awarded through CyMAL, the Assembly’s Museums, Archives and Libraries Division. Ms Griffiths said: “This is wonderful news for libraries and demonstrates the ongoing commitment of the Assembly to the development of library services. “The large investment in Wrexham Library will bring services in the town right up to date by creating modern, hi-tech library facilities we can all be justifiably proud of. “Several years ago some people were making gloomy predictions about the future of libraries and their role in the community. This level of investment clearly shows the Assembly has tremendous faith in them. This investment means Wrexham Library has a great future.”

ternational wood-based panel producer and has experience of operating in 18 countries across the world. Charitable pub to mark anniversary A WREXHAM bar is planning a month of parties and events to celebrate a pub chain’s 125th anniversary. Yates’s in High Street will also have madcap fundraising schemes for its chosen charity, Help for Heroes. The pub’s manager, Lorna McCarroll, and her team are planning two huge party weekends on June 13 and 27, with the aim to raise as much money as possible for the national wounded soldiers charity. In keeping with the charity work, the pub will also be hosting a superheroes day on Saturday from 2-4pm with fun activities including face-painting for children and prizes for the best costumes. The bar will be kitted out

in Army gear supplied by the TA. There is another party that day from 8pm until late as DJ Alan will be spinning well known superhero tunes, with food and drinks prizes for the first to guess them. Meanwhile, Saturday, June 27, sees Yates’s step back in time as staff re-create an historic Victorian street party, with bunting, colourful tables, masses of games and entertainment and barbecue. This party runs from 2-4pm for families and, again, from 8pm until late for the more seasoned partygoer. Customers will be invited to hark back to the bygone days and take part in old-fashioned street games such as hopscotch or try

their luck on a giant spin the wheel. For a small donation toward Help for Heroes, customers can to take part in this classic British roulette game and be in with a chance of winning food, bar tabs and drinks. Manager Lorna McCarroll said: “It’s a fantastic achievement to reach the milestone 125th anniversary and what better way to mark it than with two massive parties and a month of activities in aid of our dedicated charity Help for Heroes. “It’s a great cause and as such the enthusiasm and motivation of staff and customers alike to raise funds is huge.” ■ To find out more, visit www.weare125.co.uk or call Lorna or her team on 01978 262415.

WREXHAM and Flintshire are rapidly becoming the UK’s holiday hotspots for adventure-seekers looking for thrills and spills. Bookings for activity-based holidays have more than doubled thanks to a major marketing campaign, Adventure North Wales. It was launched by Tourism Partnership North Wales, which says the area is vying to be the UK’s holiday capital. Last year Adventure North Wales generated £305,000 in extra income from visitors, from an investment of about £19,000. Adventure North Wales manager Paul Maung-Maung said the signs are even better this year as he revealed advance bookings are so far up 122% from £39,000 to £88,000. He said: “Quite simply, there’s probably nowhere else in the world where there’s such a concentration of high-class adventure and activity-based holidays on offer. “North Wales is accessible. Three hours from London, two from Manchester and Birmingham. “You can be coasteering, climbing and jumping into the sea and half-an-hour later you can be canoeing in the mountains. “North Wales can offer everything, from soft adventure right up to the tough stuff. “Despite the recession, the leisure market’s strong and there are lots of positives with the currency rate, making it 20 to 30% cheaper than last year.”

IDEAL: The region is fast proving to be the popular holiday location for adventure-seekers.

IT’S regrettable the BNP’s local mouthpiece (Chronicle letter, June 4) doesn’t actually realise her leader Nick Griffin has already let the cat out of the bag regarding the Gurkhas. The BNP locally would have you believe it would welcome the Gurkhas. But Griffin, speaking on Nicky Campbell’s Radio Five Live show called them “mercenaries”, adding: “We don’t think the most overcrowded country in Europe, can realistically say ‘look, you can all come and all your relatives’. When the Gurkhas signed up – frankly as mercenaries – they expected a pension which would allow them to live well in their own country.” That doesn’t sound like much of a welcome and shows that the BNP is still a fascist and racist party whose leadership worships Hitler and his views. In the same interview Griffin claimed footballers Rio Ferdinand and Ashley Cole weren’t English because they are black. Presumably he feels the same way about black Welsh people. If these racists ever got their way, millions of people who have grown up here would be forced out purely because of the colour of their skin. No doubt they would be kept in camps to await their fate – voting for the BNP is a slippery slope to a Hitlerian nightmare. Ennys Hughes is entitled to her repugnant views but she should be honest about being a member of a fascist party whose leadership is full of convicted criminals, rather than deceiving people. BEN WILLIAMS Wrexham Against Racism and Fascism

Politicians’ expenses sham

EVERYBODY you talk to is fed up to the teeth about our local MPs claim-

UNDER ATTACK: BNP leader Nick Griffin. ing £140,000 average expenses every year. They are claiming more money in a year with their perks, wages and expenses than bosses in industry who have to live on a lot less and have responsible jobs to look after large firms. It’s about time these MPs were brought to book. All parties, Labour and the Tories, are as bad as one another as money is the root of all evil. Can anybody explain how MPs have the face and ask people to vote for them at the next election? This Government has as much sleaze about it as the Tories under John Major when he was booted out. Peter Hain said he forgot to declare his £125,000 expenses. If you are self-employed and don’t fill in your self assessment form, or you forget, you get fined £100 or £1,000 and have to pay interest on money not paid or owed. Peter Hain got away with it and is still an MP – shocking. It must be hard for these MPs to survive on a basic salary of £65,000 a year plus £150,000 expenses, plus perks and part-time jobs, plus Jacqui Smith’s scandal of thousands of pounds on TVs, bath plugs, husband’s wages £60,000, plus blue films, plus

large TV and stand £850 and lots more. What next? All these MPs are doing is looking after themselves and ducking and diving like Alistair Darling and the rich bankers who should be in jail for wrecking the country with all the money they stole off taxpayers and made many people jobless. So come the next election look out for a big change. Let’s give Vince Cable and Co a chance. We have lost everything through the rich bankers so what have we got, not a lot to choose from. It is like Maggie Thatcher said – these MPs have never had it so good. C JONES Rossett

Help charity to beat diabetes

I AM writing to ask Wrexham Chronicle readers to support leading health charity Diabetes UK during Diabetes Week, which takes place from Sunday to Saturday, June 20. This year’s theme is ‘Act Early, Improve Lives’. It was chosen to reflect the charity’s 75th anniversary year and that by acting early, lives can be improved for people affected by diabetes – both themselves and their family. Diabetes is the fastest-growing long term condition in the UK with 2.5 million people diagnosed. A further half-a-million people have Type 2 diabetes but don’t know it, putting themselves at increased risk of heart disease, blindness, amputation, kidney failure and stroke. We mustn’t forget firm’s importance ONE of the strange things which politicians have to recognise is that major developments and stories move on. However, while the focus on a certain issue can move away, it is often crucial for a local politician to ensure they do not move their focus with it. For instance, the future of Wrexham’s Remploy factory was, quite rightly, headline news a few years back. A review of Remploy plants across the UK had been put forward which proposed a number of closures. The Wrexham plant was part of that list and the outcry following the news was vast. I had already been working with staff at the plant for some time when the news became public and I set up a meeting so staff and unions could meet the then Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. A convincing case was made at that meeting, and at other meetings which followed, by campaigners ranging from community councillors to union reps and by the local media.

VIEW FROM

WESTMINSTER Wrexham Labour MP Ian Lucas

Stansty councillor Dave Bithell spent each Saturday for weeks in the town centre to highlight the campaign. Eventually, the pressure exerted paid off – and the Wrexham plant was saved. Since then the focus for many has moved elsewhere and the workers at Remploy have been doing what all of us in Wrexham do – getting on with the job. However, that does not mean the plant should be allowed to drop entirely from the public and political consciousness. Remploy Wrexham is one of the few supported factories employing staff with disabilities in North Wales. The strong local campaign which was put into place in 2007

certainly showed the importance of the factory to Wrexham and North Wales. Now staff, unions and management at the plant are working to help spread awareness of the work the plant does and are aiming to get local councils, public sector organisations and others to take a look at some of the items Remploy offers. As part of that campaign, I have been writing to people across North Wales to encourage them to visit Remploy for an open day at the plant this Friday. Every councillor in Wrexham, council leaders and chief executives from North Wales, all North Wales MPs and AMs and the heads of organisations such as police authorities, colleges and NHS Trusts have all been invited to attend. The purpose of the open day is not only to let people see what Remploy does but also to encourage them to add to its order books, help build the plant further and secure a sustainable future for the factory and its workers. Local procurement is one key way to make progress through the downturn.

HUGHES the VIEWS THE European elections were a nothing short of a disaster for Labour. And, although the Conservatives undoubtedly did well, becoming the leading party in Wales, David Cameron will be concerned that, nationally, disillusioned Labour voters didn’t turn to it in sufficient numbers. Instead it was the fringe parties picking up those votes, with UKIP actually pushing Labour into third. Worse, in what was a sad day for British politics, the BNP landed two seats in the European Parliament. The far right wing party’s leader, Nick Griffin, will represent the North West despite polling fewer votes than in 2004. In Yorkshire, retired university lecturer Andrew Brons was elected for the BNP and immediately acknowledged his victory would be anything but universally popular. All the main parties, but in particular Labour, must now take responsibility for the fact this nation will be represented by a racist party in Europe. Once the dust settles the Government, whether Labour or Conservative and led by how ever many Prime Ministers during the next five years, needs to ensure the BNP never gets elected to Europe, Westminster or any town hall again. And to do that it’s vital we look at why voters found it necessary to turn to a fascist party such as the BNP in the first place. Then we must address those issues. Britain draws strength from its multicultural roots and we must never allow the BNP to isolate and discriminate against people because of the colour of their skin.

Post office to reopen POST Office Ltd has announced the restoration of its services to Bwlchgwyn, near Wrexham, later this month. The final start date is yet to be confirmed. The Bwlchgwyn service was closed temporarily in May 2008 due to operational reasons and for some time the Post Office has been exploring options that would enable it to find a permanent solution. The new service will be every Monday and Wednesday from 1-4.30pm. It will be operated from Bwlchgwyn Community Centre, Stryt Maelor, Bwlchgwyn – the same location as the former service – and offer the same wide range of Post Office products and services. Sue Hodgins, field change adviser for Post Office Ltd, said: “I would like to thank our customers for their patience during the time taken to resolve this situation. “I am sure the residents of the area will be delighted with the branch reopening. “I hope they will support their new sub-postmaster and secure the branch in the long term.”

NEWSFile Free health test at hall

THE British Lung Foundation (BLF) Wales is giving people in Wrexham the opportunity to have a free lung test at the Memorial Hall between 10am and 2pm on Friday, June 19. The BLF will offer free lung tests on a first come first, served basis, to everyone who is worried about, or has a high chance of having, an undiagnosed lung condition. There will be an exhibition by a number of other organisations such as the Red Cross, Care and Repair, Groundwork and the local benefits team to offer a range of advice and support to anyone who has a breathing problem. People will also have the chance to take part in a tai chi demonstration and learn a little more about exercise and their lungs. BLF spokeswoman Kate Cubbage said: “The event will be very useful for anyone who has a breathing problem, whether they have been diagnosed with a lung condition or not.” ■ For more information, call 01792 455764 or email wales@blf-uk.org.

IN TALKS: The politicians meet Cefn Druids Football Club representatives.

Politicians visit Wales’s oldest club CLWYD South Labour MP Martyn Jones and local councillor Warren Coleman visited Cefn Druids Football Club to meet ambassadors from the club and discuss plans for moving the stadium and creating more jobs in the Cefn area. Mr Jones and Cllr Coleman were joined at the site, prior to the European elections, by North Wales prospective MEP candidates Lisa Stevens and Leighton Veale. The proposed move will see Wales’s oldest team move into a stadium that meets Welsh Premier

League standards. In place of the old ground, Tesco will build a store that could provide jobs and improved shopping options. Mr Jones said: “Part of me is sad to see the old stadium go. My Dad used to play for Cefn Druids and the club is part of Welsh and North Wales’s heritage. “However, I think a decision such as this is common sense. “The Druids’ new home will be a stadium much better suited to their needs and at the current time it is

Volunteering abroad

Sight-loss support day

RECORD numbers of volunteers have signed up with Projects Abroad, the world’s largest commercial volunteer abroad company for summer breaks. They are 25% up year on year overall on volunteer numbers and by 64% in the older volunteer category of traveller. The biggest growth area has been young people opting for conservation/environment as an option, which is up 98% year on year. Projects Abroad founder Dr Peter Slowe said: “We are seeing record growth. “It seems the more depressing the economic outlook has become the higher the propensity for young people to get away from it all.”

WREXHAM people are being encouraged to support an annual charity event being held in Llangollen on Saturday. The Vision Support fundraiser takes place at the Royal International Pavilion, from noon. The day will comprise exhibitions, workshops, performances, services and activities aimed at those with sight loss. Organisers are expecting a turnout of about 600 visitors from Cheshire and North Wales, including those who have sight loss, their families, friends and careers. ■ For more information, call 01244 381515 or visit www.visionsupport.org.uk.

MAKE YOU WANNA SCREAM: The Jonas Brothers star in The 3D Concert Experience.

A

s the black limo comes to a stop outside a London hotel, hordes of young girls, who have been waiting for days, erupt into screams. Flashbulbs pop as the paparazzi launch into action.

This may sound like a scene from a Hollywood film, but it’s not. The commotion has been caused by the Jonas Brothers, who have made their bigscreen debut in Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience. The mass hysteria surrounding the American siblings – Kevin, Joe and Nick – is immense. Lady Gaga has likened the effect they cause to the heyday of The Beatles, with women fainting and collapsing around them. “There have been times when it’s been scary,” admitted Kevin, the eldest brother at 21. “We have the most amazing security team around us and, beyond that, our fans are just very enthusiastic. “We definitely appreciate the way they show it, because we can feel their excitement. We try to live as normal a life as we can, but it can be overwhelming at times.” Nick – who is the youngest of the trio at 16 – said: “There are moments when you have to take a step back and really think about what it is that’s going on, because at times it’s so hard to believe this is reality. “We take it step by step, and we’re really thankful that we have each other to talk to at the end of every day because it does get a little much sometimes but it’s so much fun.” The brothers insist they have a strong bond, despite living and working with each other. “From the early days, we’ve learnt how to work and write together,” said Nick. “We don’t fight. There are little

Lady Gaga mentions them in the same breath as The Beatles and certainly there is hysteria everywhere the Jonas Brothers go. Now, as their 3D Concert Experience film continues to attract teenage girls to the Vue Cinema at Cheshire Oaks in their droves, the boys talk about what life is like as megastar pin-ups things we disagree over, but we learn to work them out.” When pressed, he added: “Kevin’s a bit messy sometimes, but I share a room with Joe.” Kevin said: “We get along well. I think it’s because we have a different kind of respect for one another, being in the band together. “We consider each other as equals. There’s no picking on the youngest, it’s just not that way. We have fun with each other, but it’s never serious.” Although it’s sometimes hard to separate the boys for interviews, each brother has his own distinct personality. “Nick’s the leader type, we call him Mr President for a reason – he’s very precise,” said Kevin. “He knows what’s going on. Joe is comic relief. He’s constantly making me laugh, and he’s always on top of his game.” “And Kevin’s the fun one,” said Joe, 19. The self-confessed ‘Mummy’s boys’ aren’t exactly living the rock ’n’ roll

lifestyle, preferring to win over fans with their wholesome images, cleancut looks and talent – they write all their own songs. But their love lives are constantly under scrutiny, especially Nick, whose ex-girlfriend is Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus, and Joe, who dated country singer Taylor Swift. “I think our dream girl has to be like Mum, that’s important to us,” says Nick. “As for a dream date, a sit-down dinner’s always nice. Simplicity is key.” Joe added: “With us being as busy as we are, we prefer some quiet chill time.” Part of their squeaky-clean appeal to mums of teenage girls the world over is their strongly held Christian values. The lads famously wear purity rings, a declaration that they are abstaining from premarital sex. “It’s just like keeping your favourite watch on, we just wear it all the time,” said Kevin. Nick said: “I think our religion is a big part of everything we do. It’s not

turn the page for more entertainment news

like we don’t prefer to talk about it, we have our personal lives and, as much as we can, we try to keep them personal. We’re flattered by people’s interests in it, I guess, but as far as our faith goes, it’s a big part of everything we do.” The last two years have been a whirlwind for the trio, who hail from a small town in New Jersey. Their debut single, SOS, shot straight to No 1 on iTunes, quickly followed by their self-titled album and its 2008 follow-up, A Little Bit Longer, and they’ve played sold-out concerts across the US. But the brothers, who starred in last year’s Disney Channel movie Camp Rock, haven’t always had it easy. “Our first gig was in a gym with all our friends, around 100 people,” said Joe. “We rolled up in a taxi with all our gear and everything, and laid it out ourselves. “We had a long journey of just getting by touring, hoping we’d get enough money by selling enough shirts to get the gas to get home.” They’ve also had to work hard to be

taken seriously as musicians rather than just teenage pin-ups. “I think we were worried about that when we first started, but now we don’t really mind it,” said Kevin. “We just are who we are, and we get a lot more respect now than people realise. When we first started, we really wanted people to know that we play our own instruments and write our own songs, but now it’s easier because we can just show them our hit songs.” Their rockumentary was made to thank fans for their loyal support. The movie combines footage from their Burnin’ Up tour, features guest performances by Swift and Demi Lovato, and offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into their life. “People come to our concerts and see it from the audience’s point of view, but this movie really makes you feel like you’re on stage performing with us,” said Joe. Nick said: “It’s the things we show behind the scenes that really stood out for us and, we hope, will give our fans a better idea of who we really are. We’re proud of this. We made it for the fans.” The boys – who dream of performing with Prince or Paul McCartney – are aware their fame may not last forever. “We all have our individual goals,” said Nick. “We want to make more records and tour as a band. “I also want to do a degree in literature and Joe wants more acting roles. We feel blessed.” Kevin added: “We have a saying before we go on stage: ‘I’m living the dream, baby, living the dream’. “It kind of goes back to when we first started touring and we weren’t really living the dream – it started out as a joke. But now we say it, remembering those moments, before we walk out on stage.”

Gary has proved to be popular as both a jazz and country guitarist, not only throughout the UK but in Europe, the USA and Australia. Self-taught, Gary started playing the guitar at 11, appearing professionally in country bands when he was only 12. Since then his musical experience has been extensive, covering jazz, country, classical, pop, funk and blues. He has also been voted best country guitarist three times. He credits his major musical influences as Django Reinhardt, Bireli Lagrene, Charlie Parker and Wes Montgomery. The winner of the British Country Music Award and the National Arts Award for Jazz, Gary was the first gypsy guitarist to release a DVD, Hotter Than Hot, which was recorded at the NWJS-organised North Wales International Jazz Guitar Festival. The concert begins at 8.30pm and admission is £6, concessions £5. Further information is available by calling 01745 812260 and at www.northwalesjazz.org.uk.

Cohen on way LEGENDARY singer songwriter Leonard Cohen follows his critically acclaimed 2008 UK shows with a special show at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, on Tuesday, July 14. Cohen’s 2008 world tour proved to be one the year’s hottest tickets. The sold-out concerts wowed arenas, opera houses, festivals and Edinburgh Castle. The shows received rave reviews, bringing Leonard’s music to his devoted fans Leonard Cohen and hoards of converts, including a moving set at last year’s Glastonbury Festival. To book tickets, visit www.echoarena.com or call the box office on 0844 8000 400.

Nik is quick to make up for lost time SPRINTER Nik Mesney is pushing hard to gain Wales recognition on the track after a year out injured. The 23-year-old Wrexham Athletic Club ace, who works as a marketing executive at Chester recruitment company Gap Personnel, has been competing for more than six years and has won medals in both the North Wales Championships and the Welsh Indoor Championships. But he only returned to competition this season after a serious ankle injury wrote off last summer. “I managed to break my ankle playing in a charity five-a-side tournament so I spent much of last year sitting at my desk with my leg propped up,” said Mesney, of Rossett. “I only managed to run twice, so it’s great to make up for lost time.” He recently took on fellow Welshman and Commonwealth Games medal-winning sprinter Matt Elias in a 200m race in the Mees Pierson Golden League in Guernsey. “It was a fantastic day and even my parents made the trip down to watch me race.” Mesney came fourth with a season’s best time of 22.29 seconds and was a member of the gold-winning Wales 100m relay team. “I wasn’t too disappointed with fourth,” he said. “The standard was very high.”

The 23-year-old from Cymau was the convincing winner at the sun-kissed Crickhowell event. Tour of Britain veteran Partridge, who has represented Wales at the Commonwealth Games, is cycling professionally for Halfords Bikehut. It was while competing for Bikehut that the former Castell Alun High School student WELSH suffered a high-speed CHAMPION: crash during the Girvan Three Day Rob Partridge. event in Scotland in April, badly injuring his hip.

DEANO: I’M IN NO RUSH

DEAN Saunders has reassured worried supporters about his plans to strengthen Wrexham’s ranks during the close season.

While other Blue Square Premier clubs have been busy signing players, the Dragons boss has so far resisted the temptation to dip into the transfer market, apart from recruiting former Wales midfielder Mark Jones, who is rejoining his hometown club for the second time after an unhappy 12-month spell at Rochdale. But Saunders, back at his desk after World Cup qualifiers, remains confident his “wait and see” strategy will pay dividends in the weeks ahead. “We are just waiting on a few things, but I am in no rush,” said Saunders, who is number two to Wales manager

John Toshack. “The sort of players I want are thinking they might yet have a chance to play at a higher level, although they will probably find they can’t. “We know what we are doing and everything is in order. Football has changed a great deal compared to how it used to be and there are 700 players out of work. I speak to different managers all the time and many of them are in a similar position to me. “Our supporters need to know there is no need to panic because we will have a team ready to go when the season begins.” Saunders, delighted by the news that season ticket sales have passed the

Injured for much of his time at the Racecourse, Critchell played just 17 games last season, the majority of them while out on loan at league rivals York City and Weymouth. Several other top earners remain at the club, like Michael Proctor, Nat Brown and Tom Kearney. ■ Wrexham have inducted seven first-year scholars into their highly-successful youth set up. Keeper Daniel Ward, of Wrexham, was part of the Wales squad for last year’s Sky Sports Victory Shield, while left-back Max Penke, of Kelsall, has appeared for Wales at schoolboy and Under 17s level. Jack Daeman, of Frodsham, is a commanding defender, while Liam Shipton, of Lymm, is a skilful midfielder. Winger Louis Moss, of Cheshire, has played for Barbados and, along with Penke, was part of the Dragons squad that won the Puma Youth Alliance NW Conference. James Corbeck, of Liverpool, is a prolific striker in the Marc Williams mould. Season’s best reap rewards WREXHAM RUFC rounded off their season at a lively annual dinner and presentation of awards evening – as the club’s search for a new head coach begins. The Adrian Hill Players’ Player of the Year went to scrum-half and former captain John Roberts. He did not miss a match and therefore also picked up the Bernard Malley Award which is presented to the player who makes the most appearances during the season. Inspirational scrum-half Kieran Morris won the Players’ Player of the Year award while forward Geraint Jones was a popular winner of the Most Improved Player. Wrexham 2nds struggled to compete in North Wales League Division Four, winning only six of their 22 matches. Prop Rob Thatcher and No 8 Keir Harding shared the Coach’s Player of the Year award, Tom Williams picked up the Cap-

The Delwyn Griffiths award, for outstanding service to the club, was presented to Alison Moore while the Frank Chapman award, which is presented to a club member whose personality and hard work deserve special recognition, went to youth team coach Ian Morris.
