Loan shark bullied women into prostitution

EVIL THUG’S SEX SLAVES A LOAN shark used a reign of terror to intimidate his debtors into paying exorbitant rates of interest, a court has heard.

Ex-bouncer Paul Nicholson, 39, from Delamere, bullied some women debtors into prostituting themselves if they couldn’t afford the repayments. But his evil empire came crashing around his ears on Friday when he was convicted of 20 offences of illegal money lending and money laundering by a jury at Warrington Crown Court. Nicholson has been remanded in custody for sentencing on March 20 and his partner Tracey Rogers, 38, who was found guilty of three offences, was bailed for sentencing on the same date. Nicholson traded as Falcon Securities, offering loans at exorbitant interest rates. He imposed harsh penalty clauses for late payments and backed it up with a climate of fear, using weapons including a knuckleduster and a baseball bat. Additionally, evidence was presented which described how women who owed money were offered the option of “payment in kind” through sexual favours to Nicholson, or working in topless bars or as prostitutes to meet the weekly payments they owed to him. Included in the charges Nicholson was found guilty of was an offence of serious sexual assault against one of his female debtors. Nicholson got a licence to trade by failing to declare his criminal past to the Office of Fair Trading. The ex-bouncer’s bully boy tactics and inflated interest rates proved a hugely lucrative mix, propelling

him from a modest lifestyle to a horse-owning gangster enjoying all the trappings to go with his ill-gotten gains. As police homed in on his racketeering, a pattern of threats and exorbitant interest rates emerged, as did a profile of victims who had been too intimidated to complain. When investigators raided his lavish, 13-acre home in Delamere, evidence of Nicholson’s wealth included £26,000 in cash. Detective Inspector Giles Orton, head of the Cheshire Constabulary Economic Crime Unit, said: “Nicholson has used threats, personal violence and sexual impropriety in the course of his illegal money lending. “I hope his conviction sends out a clear message to anyone involved in illegal money lending, and serve to reassure the public that such activity will not be tolerated. “We’ve heard in court the disturbing tales of people who were threatened and harmed by Nicholson. “Our experience shows many loan sharks also engage in crimes other than illegal money lending – such as intimidation and violence, counterfeit goods and drugs. “I’d urge anyone who currently finds themselves in the position of victims like those of Nicholson – let us know. Don’t let the loan shark take over your life.”

Gunman flees with £8,000 in cash

A GUNMAN held up a Winsford finance centre last Thursday and escaped with around £8,000 cash stuffed into a holdall. The lone raider burst into the Cheque Centre on Jubilee Way through the back door and threatened a terrified 23-year-old female worker with the firearm. The robber, who was wearing a hooded top, demanded cash from a safe and then fled on foot. A Cheshire police spokeswoman said: “Just after 3pm the female victim was at the back entrance of the store putting out the bins when she was confronted by a man who grabbed her and forced her back into the store. “He directed her towards the office area and the safe, at the same time threatening her with a handgun. The man instructed the woman to open the safe and pass the cash to him, which he subsequently placed into a holdall. “The offender then instructed her to go into the kitchen so he was free to make his escape though the back of the shop.” It is thought the robber, who is white, had a local accent. He is described as being about 5ft 6in tall and he has “very dark eyes”. He was wearing a dark coat, blue jeans and brown boots, and had a dark coloured holdall. The female worker activated the centre’s alarm system and police were immediately called. Although the cashier was unhurt, she was left “extremely shaken” after staring down the barrel of a gun. Detectives are now reviewing CCTV footage and are appealing for anyone with information to get in touch.

RARITY: A drawing of an Aston Town pear propagated from a tree found in a Weaverham smallholding.

A PROJECT to save and protect local apple and pear varieties is flourishing. Twelve months ago, the Cheshire Wildlife Trust planted up a new orchard near Malpas using using 35 ancient and rescued varieties of fruit. A year on and the saplings have taken root well and are growing strong! Varieties like the ‘Wareham Russett’ and ‘Lord Combermere’ had been in danger of being lost to the nation’s fruit tree heritage. Sue Tatman of the Cheshire Wildlife Trust says: “We’re pleased with how our orchard has survived its first year, which can be the hardest to get through.” To find out more about the orchard or the Trust, visit www.cheshirewildlifetrust.co.uk or call 01948 820728.

Trio with crowbars raid village store THREE men armed with crowbars raided a village store and stole more than £1,000 cash. The trio targeted the Spar on London Road in Davenham shortly after 10pm on Tuesday last week and forced terrified staff to lie face down on the floor while they emptied two safes. A spokeswoman said two males aged 18 and 25 and a 21-year-old woman, were left “traumatised but unhurt”.

They were cashing up prior to closing shop when the robbers broke in through a back door. “The female was at the rear of the premises when she was confronted by a man demanded she open the safes,” said police. “Another offender forced the men to lie face down whilst the men stole the cash.” The robbers then fled on foot.

All three were carrying crowbars and were wearing dark tracksuit bottoms and hooded tops, with scarves covering their faces. An 18-year-old male from Northwich was arrested on Wednesday morning, but released without charge. ■ Anyone with information is asked to contact Det Con Martin Tarpey at Northwich Specialist Investigation Unit on 0845 458 0000.

The poll of 2,259 people – commissioned by the independent environmental organisation to explore Brits’ attitudes to signs and labelling – found that in the North West, 30% notice the recycling symbol every day compared to just 23% who spot food labels on a daily basis. In addition, when given a choice of 11 colours North West residents saw red as most effective colour in influencing behaviour; 33% of those in the North West chose red, compared to the next most popular colour, blue, at just 5%.

Not too late for measles jab THE measles outbreak in South and Mid Cheshire during the last three months of 2008 accounted for the majority of cases of the disease confirmed in the region. Figures published by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) showed that in the country as a whole, 1348 cases were confirmed in 2008, up from 990 in 2007. In the North West, 180 cases were confirmed in 2008 compared to 31 in 2007, but 91 of the 2008 cases were recorded in the last three months of the year, with 75 cases locally. “We had a major outbreak and it accounted for many of the confirmed cases in the final quarter of 2008,”said Dr Rosemary McCann, HPA North West regional immunisation lead. “These outbreaks can happen in any communities where there are large numbers of unvaccinated children and young adults. “Confidence in MMR vaccine is continuing to grow and increasing numbers of parents are having their children immunised. “However, we still have large numbers of older children who missed immunisation as toddlers and these young people are needlessly vulnerable to infection.” Anyone up to the age of 18 is entitled to MMR vaccination on the NHS and it can be arranged through the GP services.

Gang accused of thefts from farms A TEENAGER from Lostock will appear before magistrates next month accused of stealing more than £2.5m worth of hi-tech equipment from farms across Vale Royal and rural Cheshire. Liam McGuigan, 19, is charged with conspiring to steal vehicles and machinery between January 1 and November 4 last year. He stands accused alongside five other Mid Cheshire men, who are charged with conspiring to steal goods with a combined value of more than £300,000. TRUE GRIT: Winsford Rock Salt Mine has been operating 24/7 to meet the nationwide demand in the wake of one of the worst winter weather spells to hit the country in years. MORE than 100 workers at Winsford Rock Salt Mine have been working round the clock to meet unprecedented nationwide demand, as salt supplies across the country dwindle in one of the worst spells of winter weather in recent years.

Around 300,000 tonnes are being excavated each week, and the cold snap has meant the mine, on Bradford Road, which provides about 90% of the country’s rock salt, has experience one of its busiest periods since a shaft was opened beside the River Weaver 165 years ago. Experts believe Winsford can provide the vast majority of Britain's supplies for another 70 years but Salt Union Ltd, which runs the mine, has admitted the sudden increase in demand has caused a headache. “We just cannot increase ca-

By David Goodban pacity any further,” said spokeswoman Katie Moffat on Friday. “We are working 24 hours a day, seven days a week and have been since the beginning of January. “We have ramped up production to its maximum capacity, but the unexpected and unusual weather means that, even working at this level, demand is outstripping supply.” The salt is cut by 1,345 horsepower machines almost 200m below the Cheshire Plain, then carried to the surface on a conveyor belt and stockpiled at either end of Bradford Road before being shipped out to keep Britain’s roads and pavements free of ice and snow. The temperature underground is kept at 14°C, in conditions dry enough to store National Archive documents.

The Met Office has issued a number of severe weather warnings because of heavy snow across Britain, and the AA claimed the salt shortages affecting many local authorities have created a “road safety crisis”. Cheshire County Council spokeswoman Rachel Newton said: “Cheshire County Council's Highways Service and its maintenance contractor BAM Nuttall are continuing to work round the clock to cope with one of the worst spells of winter weather in recent years. “The council has a fleet of 37 gritters strategically based at sites across the county. But we have not been affected in the same way many other local authorities have. “Based on the Met Office's two-five day forecast, Cheshire has sufficient supplies of rock salt to meet the county's needs for gritting on primary routes.”

Braemar Avenue, Northwich; Peter Illidge, 26, of Wilson Crescent, Lostock Gralam and Christopher Smalley, 26, of Fernlea Road, Marston will all appear at Vale Royal Magistrates Court on March 5, as will McGuigan, of Hesketh Drive. On the same day a 22-year-old man will appear accused of attempting to steal a jet-ski, a tractor mower, a trailer and a quad bike. A police spokesman said: “This is as a result of a protracted enquiry into a team that has been stealing mainly from rural locations within Vale Royal, targeting the farming community.”

WINSFORD residents are being urged to take pride in their neighbourhoods as part of a clean-up initiative. Weaver Vale Housing Trust has teamed-up with Cheshire police to run an Impact Day next Wednesday – February 18. Its aim is to tidy up the Crook Lane area and ensure residents can live in a clean and safe environment. To promote the day, pupils from Wharton and Willow Wood primary schools have designed posters and flyers with the 'keep it clean' message. The flyers will be handed out to all residents and the posters displayed on Arriva bus routes in the area. The day coincides with February half term, and organisers hope as many youngsters as possible join in. Trust neighbourhood development officer Neil Corbin said: “This is all about getting residents involved in the efforts to improve where they live and giving them a feeling of pride in their neighbourhood.” Suzanne Gordon, the Trust's tenancy management officer for Crook Lane, said: “I am working closely with partnership agencies to strive towards a safer, cleaner, greener neighbourhood. “The Impact Day is an ideal opportunity for the community and agencies to work together to achieve this. I hope we will get lots of community support and the day will be a huge success.” The initiative follows the success of previous similar events held on Crook Lane.

A WINSFORD man facing a prison term after being found guilty of possession of class A drugs with intent to supply has had his sentencing put back for a third time. Robert Bryning, 49, of Cedar Grove, was convicted following a five-day trial at Liverpool Crown Court in December. Winsford police officers found about £5,000 worth of cocaine at his house when they raided it on March 9 last year. Bryning was originally due to learn his fate on January 26, but is now expected to be sentenced on March 4 after the case was adjourned again at a hearing on Monday.

A NEW police campaign targeting ‘anti-social’ drivers and those with illegal modifications begins in Northwich on Monday. PC John Gardiner, who is leading Operation Fuse, said it will run until the end of March and focus upon those with illegal tinted windows. “Under the Road Traffic Act, 75% of light must be allowed through the front windscreen and 70% through the front side windows. “If you are stopped by police and are contravening these regulations, there is a possibility you will face prosecution and have your car seized and windows rectified before the car can be released back onto public roads.”

Memorial to race ace killed doing sport he loved GREENBANK motorcycle prodigy Craig Jones, who died after a crash at Brands Hatch in August last year, will be honoured with a memorial tree and bench on the estate where he grew up.

The 23-year-old, who went to Hartford High School and Mid-Cheshire College, was regarded as a future world champion and police and the borough council want a lasting tribute to inspire local youngsters. A memorial tree and bench will be erected on the estate today (Wednesday). “Craig was very well thought of, and part

of the reason we want to do this is that we wanted to show that anyone, regardless of background, can succeed if they are determined and motivated,” said Police Community Support Officer Barbara Billington. Craig, who lived on Marshall Lane, was vying for the lead in a World Supersport Championship race when he lost control, fell and was hit by the following bike. He was rated one of the sport’s outstanding prospects, finishing runner-up in the 2005 British Supersport and being named young rider of the year in 2003.

Happy memories of the old haunts JUSTWilliam The musings of a middle-aged man from Middle England “THERE are places I’ll remember all my life”, so goes the song. In my case there are lots of people too who stay in my memory. But it is places I want to reminisce about today, not people. Places such as Kitty Oakes’, the Regal and Plaza cinemas, and the old market building surrounded by so many pubs. All these places, and more, have gone, and more to the point, have not been replaced by anything half as good. On a Saturday night when I was in my teens I had many choices of what to do. If I had not spent too much on Friday night I could go to ‘The Morgue’ to watch whatever top group was on. But prior to entering I, along with many hundreds of others, would head for the many local hostelries dotted around the area such as The Penrhyn Arms, The Fox, or the Bleeding Wolf. My main port of call was Ma Kenyon’s, now the Witton Chimes. It was actually called the Waterman’s Arms but few called it that. To almost everyone it was ‘Ma Kenyon’s’, and still is to some. If I had spent too much on Friday I could instead head for the pictures. We had two to choose from. They were rather like Sainsbury’s and Tesco’s, in that one was considered more “up market” that the other. But the Plaza had one main advantage over the Regal. It had an upstairs, ideal for chucking your toffee wrapping papers and ice cream cartons onto the unsuspecting patrons below. Many a lad failed to see the end of the film, having been thrown out by the irate manager. The Regal you saved for romance, well a quick snog on the back row to be more accurate! If I was flat broke I would take myself off to Rudheath Youth Club where some local band would do their best to imitate the great bands of the time. They failed of course, but they gave it a good go. Those days may be gone, but I still have the memories to cherish. But that’s all they are – memories. Today’s kids have so little to entertain them is it any wonder they cause problems? No dance hall, no youth clubs and not even a cinema. Is this really the ‘Northwich Vision’?

Civic Hall has served us well

WHILE the outside of the Winsford Civic Hall may not be the most attractive, the spacious interior is great for a multitude of uses. It also has the best toilets I've ever seen in a theatre! Over the years I've used the hall to introduce children to shows, ice skating, and a variety of other functions – so I’ll be sad to see it go. It's given much pleasure, as have the management and staff over the years. I do hope they will continue in the new building. One reason for it's demise, I'm told, is because it’s too big. However the Lyceum Theatre in Crewe is double its age, and continues to thrive. BRYAN DEARDEN Cuddington

Decision day on rendering plant

I THOUGHT I would let readers know that Vale Royal Borough Council has listed the planning application for a rendering plant at Thellow Heath Farm, Antrobus, for consideration on Tuesday, February 17 at 5pm in Winsford. Our PEACE group has continued researching and campaigning since the application was initially deferred two years ago due to VRBC being compelled to look at the objectors' information. And we are pleased to have finally reached this stage. Local opposition to the plans remains fervent and we hope as many of you as possible will be able to attend. Child victims of violence

EVERY year, at least 750,000 children have to deal with situations of violence between adults in their home. Witnessing this violence between parents or carers can cause a child serious harm. It can disrupt normal social and mental development, and may lead to anxiety, depression and self-harm. Many studies have found a strong overlap between domestic violence and the physical, sexual and emotional abuse of children. With the current economic situation, which potentially creates more pressures for families, the need for action is all the more urgent. This is why I am pleased to

Loss of our wonderful son WE’RE so very proud of our son Ashley, who died after being hit by a car in Winsford as reported in last week’s Chronicle. He was a devoted and loving son and brother to his family. Ashley was a mature, thoughtful and infectiously funny boy, who was never happier than when he was with those he loved. We will always remember him for his ability to enter a room and immediately make all those present smile and laugh. Ashley was a tall, handsome young man but his most memorable quality was his sense of humour. All those who had the good fortune to meet our son would remember him fondly for his ability to bring joy and happiness to any situation. Typical of Ashley was his very obvious love of his younger sister, Chloe, who loved him deeply. She has lost a caring and compassionate brother, which has profoundly affected her. Ashley was delighted to have been accepted to study forensic science at Mid-Cheshire College, a dream he had since his early days at Verdin High School. He was a talented student who was rarely happier than when he was working on his college studies. There is no doubt in our minds that he would have achieved all of his dreams and aspirations. We have all been deeply affected by the events of the last week and the pain has been unbearable for us to deal with.

north of England for the first time. The worm, also known as French heartworm, has traditionally not been present in the UK but over the last few years increasing numbers of cases have been reported in the south of England. There have been five reported cases in the Manchester and Liverpool areas - and all five dogs died. The worm is usually spread by snails and slugs following accidental or intentional ingestion. Infection can follow snails leaving their trail on dog food bowls. Although infestation with this worm seems to be rapidly fatal, it can be prevented by using a special monthly treatment available from your vet. I’m using this prevention on my own dog. The worm prevention is also effective at preventing other types of worm as well as fleas and mites so I plan to change my dog's usual worming and flea regime to one which is effective against this new worm. I urge all dog owners to discuss the problem with their own vets so an effective prevention can be put in place. Our wildlife faces carnage

FEBRUARY 1 marked the end of the pheasant and partridge shooting season, leaving behind it a trail of and death. Of the 40 million pheasants and partridges bred every year to be gunned down, 'only' 18 million are actually shot and retrieved. The rest die from starvation, predation, injury or under the wheels of motor vehicles. Having been conditioned to be dependent from birth on their keepers for housing and food, released 'gamebirds' are especially vulnerable. Aside from the slaughter of birds, foxes, crows, stoats and any animals perceived to be a threat to gamebirds are ruthlessly killed. Animal Aid has collected compelling undercover footage which clearly shows that the breeding and killing of birds has nothing to do with producing food for the table, and everything to do with the pleasure certain individuals obtain from killing animals for 'sport'. Our film can be viewed at www.animalaid.org.uk. ANDREW TYLER Director, Animal Aid, The Old Chapel, Bradford Street, Tonbridge TN9 1AW

Captain Slow revs up!

NEWSFile Child porn conviction

A NORTHWICH man who admitted making and possessing indecent images of children has escaped a prison sentence. Derek Sefton of Vicarage Walk, was disqualified from working with children and put on the Sex Offenders’ Register for five years when he was sentenced at Chester Crown Court. The 48-year-old had earlier pleaded guilty to two charges of making indecent images of children and one of possessing indecent images. He was also given a three-year supervision order and told to attend a course to address his behaviour.

By a Chronicle reporter CAPTAIN Slow of BBC’s Top Gear is revving up for the Thundersprint! James May is renowned for his hilariously laconic assessments of all that’s new in the world of four wheels - but he’s a dedicated bike fan and rates the Thundersprint as one of his favourite events of the year. James will return to Northwich on May 10 with his mighty 1964, 87cc Honda which produces a heady 6.5 bhp. He’ll line up with six-times World Champ Jim Redman and Double World Champ James Toseland. May says: “When I crest Castle Hill in Northwich in my borrowed van, and see the town spread out below me like Camelot, I know that my faithful charger, has arrived at its spiritual home." Asked about his racing achievements, he lists doing 45mph his Honda on the A4, changing the oil and finishing next to last in last year’s event. `Mad Dog May’, as James likes to be known when in race mode, aims to explode the Captain Slow myth!

Landmark design at town gateway By Andrew Bowan

ARCHITECTS planning a new multimillion pound development to replace the Winsford Civic Hall say they want a create “a landmark building at the gateway to the town centre”. Winsford Cross Development Ltd wants to demolish the 42-year-old building and erect a huge four-storey facility to house public sector workers and a medical centre. In outlined proposals drawn up by Belfast-based Coogan & Co and submitted to Vale Royal Borough Council, it is claimed the project “will provide a significantly enhanced service for the area”. The application states: “The current design and layout of the Civic Hall does little to address the street frontages. It is proposed to introduce a landmark building to provide a statement as one enters the town centre.” Vale Royal had previously claimed there were no plans to flatten the Civic Hall. But The Chronicle understands Coogan & Co’s blueprint follows numerous discussions and meetings with borough planning bosses, who appear supportive of the bid, describing it as “welcome news for the future of the town centre”. The application continues: “The ground and first floor of the devel-

The company leading the project is Winsford Cross Developments Ltd, also behind a separate planning application to regenerate the neighbouring shopping centre. The plans were due to be considered by Winsford Town Council’s planning sub-committee yesterday afternoon.

Ceremony celebrates estate’s bright future WINSFORD Industrial Estate's thriving business community was honoured at a lavish ceremony. County boss fears loss of experience By Chris Smith COUNCIL chief Jeremy Taylor is among the “threequarters” of top managers at Cheshire County Council who won’t be in charge after April 1.

Senior officers have left for a variety of reasons. Some have found jobs with other organisations, others have accepted redundancy willingly – while some were simply not wanted by the new employers and given the golden handshake. Mr Taylor is worried about losing “hundreds of years” of experience with the clear-out of the entire top management team in children’s services – a department which protects vulnerable youngsters in the home and aims to make sure they fulfil their potential at school. Mr Taylor, 61, is confident chief executives Steve Robinson (Cheshire West) and Erika Wenzel (Cheshire East) know it is an area they must “keep their eye on most sharply”. “They are aware of the fact there is not a wealth of experience coming over,” said Mr Taylor, who is clearly perplexed at why senior colleagues have been passed over.

END OF AN ERA: Outgoing chief executive of Cheshire County Council Jeremy Taylor at his desk at Chester County Hall. IC260109hall-002 “Mostly, the people who applied for jobs were either not interviewed or not appointed,” he explained. Mr Taylor had argued to Government that one council for the whole of Cheshire would bring better and cheaper services. He says the costs of the chosen system are rocketing far beyond the figures in the business case and warns budgets are going to be tight.

Parents were able to join the pupils on Friday morning for an assembly in which the children shared their dance, their art work and some of what they had learned during their insight into Indian culture.

Nevertheless, he believes the unitary councils will improve the status quo in years to come. Two-tier councils had led to confusion, he said, which will end. “It should be much clearer. When people get their council tax bills they will be able to see exactly what the cost of the services are and come to a view about value for money and everything else,” he said.

NEWSFile Clubs for over 40s

WINSFORD Community Action Project (WINCAP) is encouraging residents aged over 40 to attend the launch of two clubs which will provide them with a friendly environment to socialise this week. The Purple Edge club launches tomorrow, Thursday, in the Winsford Centre, at Cheviot Square, from 1- 4pm. Life Begins at 40 will also be launched with the support of Weaver Vale Housing Trust, on Friday, February 13, at the Neighbourhood House, 15/17 Finsbury Walk, from 10am-1pm. Both clubs will be run once a week by young volunteers aged 16-25, and will provide a place for people aged over 40 to meet and socialise. The launch events will provide an opportunity for residents to say what they would like to see included in the clubs, from activities and refreshments to organised trips. Volunteer coordinator Mark Baker said: “We also hope that the fact young people from the area will be running the clubs will also help to bring young and older people closer together and build stronger community ties.” For more information contact Mark Baker on 01606 590233.

Mark’s lottery windfall

CORKS will be popping in a Winsford kitchen after a supermarket worker scooped top prize of £1,500 in the St Luke’s Hospice lottery. Mark Peacock, who is fresh foods manager at the town’s Asda store, has been playing the lottery for three years. The 42-year-old, of Dart Walk, said: “The first week I played the lottery I won £5 but I hadn’t won anything since then. “This win has come at a great time and I’m really happy.” St Luke’s Hospice lottery costs £1 a week, with 83p going directly to the hospice. The game has more than 18,000 players and prizes range from £5 to £1500.

Salary ‘unjustifiable’

AN MP says it is wrong that the new chief executive of Cheshire West and Chester Council will earn almost as much as the Prime Minister. Mike Hall, MP for Weaver Vale, has changed his mind over abolishing Cheshire’s existing councils and replacing them with just two authorities governing East and West Cheshire from April 1. Speaking in parliament, he said: “One of the first things the new Cheshire West and Chester shadow unitary authority did was advertise for a new chief executive with a salary of £173,000 – as close as it is possible to get to the PM’s salary, although the two jobs are significantly different.”

Godfather of evolution A BIRD specimen collected by Charles Darwin on the legendary voyage of the Beagle is displayed at the World Museum Liverpool to mark the 200th birthday of the great naturalist. Darwin collected the ovenbird in 1834 in Wolsey Sound in the Straights of Magellan at the tip of South America. The specimen has been in the museum’s renowned collections since 1896. Darwin wrote on the label that the stomach was full of shellfish and the bird was very common. They are called ovenbirds because they build nests out of hard mud, resembling round Dutch ovens. When the Beagle returned to Britain in 1836 after the epic five-year voyage around the world, 27-year-old Darwin became a celebrity. He’d collected thousands of specimens of creatures and fossils. His researches led him to his monumental and controversial theory of natural selection which was published as On the Origin of Species in 1859. Darwin was born on February 12, 1809, at Shrewsbury. To mark the milestone, Paul Netterfield premiers his performance as the older Darwin explaining his ground-breaking theory. He will greet visitors to the museum at various times in the day and talk about Darwin’s theories and the voyage of the Beagle.

STARRING ROLES: From left, Hannah Lloyd, Janet Alvin, Lisa Bone and Daniel Nolan in Sandiway Pantomime Group’s production of Snow White.

S

ANDIWAY Pantomime Group delighted their audiences with their hilarious adaptation of Snow White. Talented writers Mike Stevenson and Simon Davies re-wrote the plot to deliver a whole new twist on the classic fairy tale. In this contemporary recount the wicked queen, superbly played by Janet Alvin, is on the brink of marrying the King. Snow White is not the offspring of the King, but the daughter of the local landlady in the Miner’s Arms (the pantomime dame, Geoff Dodd). The vain queen consults her mirror – a fantastic piece of special effects in the guise of actress Denise Whitney – who delivers the unfortunate

REVIEW by Tracey Clare message that Snow White has superior beauty to herself. Thus begins the Queen’s campaign to rid the land of Snow White. She commands Boris (Mike Stevenson), her blundering henchman, to do the dirty deed. All goes wrong as Boris tries to eradicate Snow White with a kitchen utensil (a whisk!). A strong cast of children and adults ensured all were highly entertained for a full two-and-a-half hours. Special mention has to go to 13-year-old Lisa Bone, of Weaverham High, who wowed the audi-

ence with her solo performances, looking like a true professional. Her mature and animated characterisation surely marks the beginning of a successful career on the stage. All proceeds from the performance are to be donated to BEAT, a charity that offers support to people with eating disorders, in memory of Kate Armstrong-Clark, a former member of the group who died from an eating disorder almost a year ago. ■ Sandiway Pantomime Group is always looking for new members to add to their pool of talent. If any adults or children over the age of 10 are interested, call Rob Owen on 01606 883046.

Freelander proves its worth roadtest with

Ian Johnson

IT COULD be that some Sports Utility Vehicles are about to breast the hump of financial uncertainty – thanks to the recent blizzard conditions.

Demand for certain models has benefited from the recent prolonged bouts of wintery weather, according to the publishers of car ‘bible’ Glass’s Guide. The SUV sector slumped last year as potential buyers considered smaller vehicles to cut down on the then soaring fuel costs. But the snow and icy weather last week combined with lower fuel prices helped to to trigger renewed interest in SUVs as used car buyers opted for more robust vehicles that they believe can cope well with the unpredictable conditions. It was only a matter of time. The environmentalist vision of a sunshine utopia with everyone scooting around in one-size-fits-all city cars was frozen to a halt as Jack Frost bared his fangs nearly bringing the country to a halt. Unless that is, you were driving a Land Rover Freelander. Freelander may be the baby of the Land Rover range but it is massively big on ability. Ability I was able to test at first hand as

SURE FOOTED: The Land Rover Freelander proved its worth in the recent blizzards. I had to cope with whiteout conditions the night of the big snowstorm. Roads were completely covered and even when there were ruts they filled up quickly in the relentless snowfall. Small hatchbacks were all over the place and in the end, only heavy trucks and 4x4s were able to cope on one road I found myself on. The Freelander has unique terrain re-

sponse technology and features a special setting for snow. But even in such extreme conditions it actually did not need it, cruising along quite happily in normal road mode. When I did switch the device on to see what happened the tiny bit of slipping there was disappeared completely. This again testifies to the Freelander’s off-road and heavy weather pedigree.

It features a full-time intelligent 4x4 system that not only helps optimise traction but also helps fuel economy. Land Rover’s commitment to a cleaner environment has now expanded to included a stop-start version of the amazing vehicle. This version cuts the engine automatically at traffic lights etc., to save on fuel and reduce the carbon tyremark.

Greying car population

ONE of the effects of an economic downturn is hanging on to our cars longer than we would do in better times.

Because of this, Britain is heading for a glut of ‘greying cars’ and with this comes the prospect of mounting repair bills. Between 2004 and 2007, there was a 10% increase in cars aged three to six years on UK roads, while cars aged under three years reduced by a similar amount. With new car sales dropping by almost 20% in the second half of 2008,, this ‘ageing process’ is accelerating, leaving more and more cars outside the protection of the manufacturer’s warranty. When you think an engine failure could cost in the thousands, then maybe that extended warranty you always thought might be useful, could be a necessity Today, the choice of cover and provider is greater than ever before, but like any insurance, it can be a minefield. If choosing an extended warranty make sure you are covered for “general wear and tear”. Some policies may claim to protect against this, but include wording in their contracts which contradict the headline promise. Check the Excess and Claims Limit on the policy and check your policy covers consequential loss. As with many things - always read the small print. Ian Johnson

Boss bemoans his King-size bad luck NORTHWICH Vics’ beleaguered boss Steve King is cursing his luck since taking over the Marston’s Arena hotseat. The former Lewes manager, who is still without a win so far after becoming Vics’ third boss this season, says Sunday’s match at Kidderminster Harriers is one of the toughest in the Conference. The match at Aggborough (2pm) was switched from Saturday to give promotion-chasing Kiddy a chance to rest after their FA Trophy replay at York tonight but King is hoping his struggling side’s fortune will change. He said: “We are just not getting any luck at the moment. I now know what it feels like to be the manger of one of those sides at the bottom of the league. “When I was at Lewes and on top of the league, you get the winning goal in the last minute against a bottom club and you seem to get that bit of luck. “Now I know what it’s like to be on the receiving end but we’ve got to keep plugging away. “Kidderminster and Burton have the best home records in the division so it’s going to be a tough game. “But we always seem to do well against the top sides and we have only been beaten by the odd goal. “We deserved to win when we drew at Wrexham and we didn’t deserve to lose against Histon.” King is expecting to be able to select from a fully-fit squad and was buoyed this week by the return of Joel Byrom after a long period out with injury. Vics are still cut adrift at the bottom of the Conference by 14 points but they have the chance to gain some ground on their relegation rivals when they visit Forest Green Rovers next Wednesday (7.45pm). The match the New Lawn will be

Vodkat League WINSFORD United have captured the signings of two former players as boss Joe Gibiliru looks to re-ignite their season. The Blues, who are still mid-table in the Vodkat Premier after Saturday’s match with Nelson was called off due to snow, welcome back left-back Lee Duckworth and midfielder Dean Ennion. Boss Gibiliru is delighted to sign the duo, from Alsager Town and Newcastle Town respectively, so they can play in Saturday’s league game at Atherton LR (3pm). “Lee will give us a bit more size at left-back which will also mean that we can push John Riley with his pace up the left flank,” he said. “Dean is a big asset especially from dead-ball situations which is why I have brought him back. “Saturday’s game will be a tough one but every match in this division is, but I am expecting a much better performance from those we have seen recently.” On Tuesday, the Blues take on Witton Albion in the Mid Cheshire Senior Cup semi-final at Wincham Park (7.45pm). “We beat them on the way to winning the cup last year so they’ll be up for revenge. It’ll be an interesting game and hopefully we can cause a bit of a shock,” added Gibiliru.

Witton Albion - UniBond League Premier

WITTON Albion have a crucial six-pointer with relegation rivals Buxton on Saturday but Wincham Park legend Lee Coathup says they are favourites. The assistant coach, who starred for Witton at Wembley in the FA Trophy final in 1992, is confident going into the home clash. Buxton lie just three points ahead of Albion in 15th place, meaning a win for either side would catapult them up the UniBond Premier table. Albion go into Saturday’s fixture (3pm) in decent form having won

to come around. “Buxton will be a tough game as they are no easy fixtures in this division but hopefully

we’ll get the right result on Saturday and continue to climb away from the bottom four.” Witton were due to face Guiseley last night in their UniBond Challenge Cup quarter-final tie that was rearranged after Saturday’s postponement. As the Chronicle went to press, the game was expected to go ahead despite the bad weather. Witton also host Winsford United on Tuesday (7.45pm) in the Mid Cheshire Senior Cup semi-final. ■ Turn to the back page for Lee Coathup’s assessment of Witton’s chances of safety.

BARNTON boss Mick Duckett is firing up his squad for Saturday’s crucial clash with relegation rivals Garswood United. The Townfield Lane side play host to the Wigan side who lie just two places and four points ahead of them in Cheshire League Division One. And after last week’s match with Pilkington being called off due to snow, Barnton are raring to go. “It’s a must-win match for us,” said Duckett. “We have done well against the top sides but it’s about beating those teams around us. “We won at their place so hopefully we can do the same again on Saturday.” Kick-off is 2.15pm at Barnton who will still have James Thomas and James Baldini unavailable through suspension. ■ Lostock Gralam’s Cheshire League Division Two clash against Warrington Town was postponed on Saturday due to the sub-zero temperatures. This Saturday, the sixth-placed Grey Lambs travel to joint-bottom Monk (2.15pm).

Grange boys hit top form to reach final Football GRANGE schoolboys are celebrating after reaching the national final of the Independent Schools FA Cup. The Hartford school’s under 13s claimed a place at the showcase event to be played at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium by winning their semi-final tie earlier this month. The U13s beat St Bede’s, from Manchester, 4-2 and spokesperson Pippa Peck said: “This is a tremendous achievement for the Grange, especially looking at the size of some of the schools who enter. “We are hoping a good number of pupils will get the opportunity to go down and support for the final. Congratulations to the whole team.” In the semi-final, the Grange took the lead through Calum Saunders before man of the match Connor Gay put them 2-0 up. A superb strike from James Hayes and a goal from Dan Bruce sealed the victory before St Bede’s grabbed two consolation goals. The Grange squad is back row: Robert Walker, John Chapple Gill,

Blacks put to sword by Leigh’s strongmen NORTHWICH’S faint hopes of promotion were all but ended by a strong Leigh outfit who deservedly walked away with two points on Saturday.

Kevin Greaves called his side “lacklustre” and “poor” in his post-match assessment of the North Two West clash at Moss Farm. And he is hoping his side will be able to bounce back immediately as they travel to high-flying Altrincham Kersal on Saturday (2.30pm). “In fairness to Leigh, they came with a large group of forwards and a simple game plan. If they play as well as that most weeks then not many sides will be them. “It’s frustrating as it is was just one of those days,” said Greaves. “We turned the ball over and had to defend for large parts of the game. “I’ll be putting one or two things right this week because we were poor. I can’t knock the lads’ efforts but the application from certain individuals was not up to the standards we set ourselves.”

Northwich went into half-time 13-0 down after an error-strewn first-half. The Blacks came out all guns blazing in the second period but only had a Matt Bebbington penalty to show for their efforts. Again the tough visitors took control and sealed the game with two drop-goals. ■ Winnington Park’s attempts to get their Cheshire Vase tie with Wilmslow played proved fruitless as the game was postponed due to the frozen pitches at Burrows Hill. The match will now be played on Saturday, February 28. This Saturday, Park travel to Cheshire and South Lancs Division One leaders Burnage (2.30pm) but they will have to do so without several key players. Captain Will Burgess, Matt Dodd and Joe Robins are all injured so the seconds’ front-row will fill the void.

At the halfway point in the six match series, Calvin Tagg is leading the way with 53 points, closely followed by Mark Emmison with 52. A distant third is Arthur Kenney with 33 points. Dave Blears went home with the top pay out from Barnton and Frodsham’s Wednesday match on Heesom’s Pool thanks to 1-4-12 of roach, perch and a single skimmer.

RUGBY UNION: Winnington Park veterans are appealing for players to come down to Burrows Hill in preparation for a new league to be launched next season. In the ladies race, Pauline Davies (LV55) put on a sterling display and grabbed second overall. In the junior section, Vale Royal only had one entrant in the Manchester League event held at Wythenshawe Park on Saturday. Amelia Pettitt was the solo star and earned a third-place finish. Junior members are now getting ready for one of the biggest events of the season known as the Nationals. The huge event held next Saturday at Parliament Hill in London attracts thousands of athletes from all over the country and Vale Royal will be represented across the board. Coach Sean McGrath said: “The other events and leagues are winding down now as everyone is getting ready for the Nationals. It is a massive event.”

Legend Lee backs Witton for safety Profile

LEE Coathup – one of Witton Albion’s favourite sons – is delighted to be back at Wincham Park this season and he firmly believes the club can save their UniBond Premier status. The 41-year-old who starred at left-back for Witton, making 100 appearances, is now assistant manager and is helping boss Gary Finley steer Witton to safety. Since the duo took over in November, Witton have risen from bottom of the league to within a couple of wins from mid-table security. And Coathup, who played for Witton on one of their most memorable days at Wembley in 1992, says the future is bright for the club. “We are a sleeping giant really,” he said. “Witton are too big of a club to go down and hopefully with results going for us recently, we are heading in the right direction.” Coathup played for Albion between 1991 and 1993 in a Vauxhall Conference side boasting the talents of Karl Thomas, Jim and Joe Connor and Keith Mason. The former Everton and Vauxhall Motors star scored just once in a red and white shirt. He is now in his second term of management at Witton. Witton lost 3-1 to Colchester United at the old Wembley, but Coathup says the he has nothing but fond memories of his playing days. “It was a real privilege to be part of that side and Witton is a great family club to play for. “When a club is so close to your heart, it gives you more of an incentive to succeed in the job and do your best. “Hopefully we have turned a corner on the pitch now and can climb up the table.” This Saturday Witton host Buxton at Wincham Park (3pm), see our website www.midcheshirechronicle.co.uk for a match report.

CRUNCH TALKS: Former chairman Mike Connett has still not unlocked the gates to Vics’ Marston’s Arena as he meets administrators to discuss future of the stadium’s lease. Inset: Vics owner Jim Rushe is frustrated by the situation. RS081206Vics-005/RS081207Vics-009 NORTHWICH Vics are still shut Football out of their Marston’s Arena By Ben Coulbeck ground which remains unsold.

The stadium has been locked for about a month now forcing Vics to play home fixtures elsewhere and switching venues where possible. Former chairman Mike Connett, who still technically owns the ground despite his firm Beaconet being wound up two weeks ago, is still present at the stadium stopping those at the club he had previously banned, including Vics owner Jim Rushe, from entering the premises. Rushe, who is the lead figure of a consortium of local businessmen attempting to buy the ground, says he is “frustrated” with the situation and says that both himself and the football club is still in a state of limbo.

He said that Connett is supposed to be meeting administrators to discuss legalities of the 25-year lease that Vics had under the old regime. Last week, Connett was placed under supervision at the stadium by staff representing fixed-charge receivers Deloitte. Rushe says all that stands between his consortium and buying the Marston’s Arena is for a lending company in London to agree to loan him the £1.5m needed to complete the purchase. “It’s not like I am asking for money to buy a car or a house, it’s £1.5m so it’s just a case of jumping through hoops, doing everything they ask of

us and hopefully it will all come right in the end. “It is frustrating but there is nothing more we can do. Companies are wary of lending to football clubs so they ask for much more information than usual which is why it’s taking so long.” Vics’ next home fixture is on Tuesday, February 24 against Kettering Town by which time Rushe will hope to have bought the ground or else Vics would have to play at either Witton, Chester City or Macclesfield Town. Vics are still rooted to the bottom of the Blue Square Premier and 16 points adrift after a recent 1-0 defeat to Altrincham with last Saturday’s match at Ebbsfleet falling victim to the weather.

Manager Steve King says that the financial situation at the club is not helping the team’s cause as he is unable to bring in the players he wants. He said: “I have had players lined up and ready to sign but my hands are pretty much tied. They were players that would really make a difference.” This Sunday, Vics travel to Kidderminster Harriers (2pm) before playing their seventh consecutive away fixture, at Forest Green Rovers next Wednesday (7.45pm). King expects to be able to select from a fully fit squad for Sunday’s clash at Aggborough. For a match report see www.midcheshirechronicle.co.uk
