TODDLER’S DEATH WAS ACCIDENTAL By Will Harris A BOY was tragically killed at a village fête after he was hit by car, an inquest heard yesterday.

Four-year-old James Gregory, of Astbury Drive, Barnton, was struck by the Mitsubishi 4x4 at lunchtime on June 28 on Cogshall Lane, Comberbach. Assistant deputy Cheshire coroner Dr Geoff Roberts heard James was visiting the Comberbach Village Fête with his father, Andrew Gregory. James was waiting as his dad looked in his car boot for a permission slip to allow a friend’s daughter to walk with the brownies in the fête procession. But the toddler, who had been due to start primary school in September, ran into the road between parked cars while his father was distracted. Mr Gregory said: “He was excited to get back to the fête. Out of the corner of my eye I just saw him. “I tried to get hold of him but he’d gone before I could grab him.” An accident investigation confirmed that 4x4 driver Brian Thom had no chance to see James in time, and concluded the accident was unavoidable. Mr Thom, of Meadow

Inquest told driver had no chance to see boy before crash Lane, Comberbach, told the inquest: “I only heard a little thud, I didn’t see him at all. Then I heard his father shouting and stopped as soon as I could.” James was taken to Warrington General Hospital by ambulance as paramedics continued to attempt to revive him. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. A pathology report confirmed that the James had died as a result of the skull fractures sustained from the collision. Summing up, Dr Roberts said: “It’s quite clear to me that the doctors did everything they could to revive James, alas, unsuccessfully. “This has been an extremely sad and distressing case and there’s no doubt at all in my mind as to the causation of events.” Verdict: Accidental death.

TRAGIC: James Gregory, four, was killed in a road accident in Comberbach.

Police plea over robbery attempts TWO men who tried to rob cash-carrying security guards are being hunted by police. The two guards were targeted as they dropped off cash at the Sandiway Shell garage at 3.30pm on Monday – but fled when the workers resisted. A police spokeswoman said: “The security men, a 27-year-old from Merseyside and a 29-year-old from North Wales, were delivering cash cartridges to the ATM at the garage. “As they got out of their vehicle, they were approached by two men, one of whom was armed with a crowbar. “They demanded the cash but the security officers slammed the door of the van shut to prevent the men from attacking them and stealing the cash. “The offenders escaped empty-handed in a car, believed to have been a dark Nissan Almera. Fortunately nobody was hurt during the incident.” Anyone with information is asked to contact Det Con Steve Jones at Northwich Specialist Investigation Unit on 0845 458 0000. ■ Police are also appealing for witnesses after a failed robbery attempt in Witton Street, Northwich, last Thursday night. Two security guards were making a cash delivery to Abbey National at 9.15pm when the raiders struck. “One of them was walking towards the bank carrying a cash cartridge when he was hit over the head from behind. “The male offender failed to wrestle away the cash cartridge from the security officer who ran into the bank and locked the doors.” The two offenders, wearing dark coloured hooded tops, ran away empty-handed. The security officer, a 48-year old-man from Wrexham, was treated for his injuries at hospital and discharged over the weekend. Police do not at this stage believe the two attempted robberies are linked.

Teenager accused of murder denied bail ONE of the three friends accused of killing a Northwich grandad in a street attack faces spending Christmas in custody after being refused bail. Nineteen-year-old Paul Blower, of Chapel Street, Wincham, appeared at Chester Crown Court on October 7 charged with the murder of 59-year-old taxi driver Jim Straiton. He was remanded in custody alongside his co-accused – Nigel Goolding,

20, of Cromwell Road, Winnington, and Joshua Spruce, 19, of Alderley Road, Winnington. Blower appeared at Chester on Tuesday morning, December 2, to make an application for bail, but his bid was refused. with wounding after allegedly attacking Mr Straiton outside his home on Park Road, Winnington, in the early hours of Saturday, July 26. Car thefts probe

OPEN FOR BUSINESS: Winsford shopping centre’s new public toilets. WINSFORD’S new town centre toilets will provide a welcome relief for shoppers and traders, say town councillors. Visitors to Winsford Cross Shopping Centre can now spend a penny after Mar, which owns the centre, opened the facilities last week. The new loos, which have disabled access and baby changing facilities, have been built near the NatWest bank on Dingle Walk, at the former Poundzone. Winsford mayor Des Worthington joked: “I’m sure the town centre shoppers will be very relieved!”

By Dave Goodban Councillor Arthur Wood said the project was part of the Winning Winsford regeneration scheme. Others in the pipeline include the Winsford Lifestyle Centre, the Learning Zone, a revamp of Town Park, major regeneration to the waterfront area, preservation work at Winsford Flash and the development of a 2,000capacity “super-school”. The Chronicle understands the old toilets could now be demolished, and the shopping centre extended – but no-one from Mar was available for comment.

VACCINE: Weaverham High School pupils were among the first to get the MMR jab as health chiefs began a two-week mass immunisation programme across the county.

THE mass immunisation of hundreds of schoolchildren across Mid Cheshire is under way to fight off a looming measles epidemic. Schools throughout the area have been visited over the last seven days after it was revealed that more than 10,000 children were at risk of infection. Pupils at Weaverham High School were among the first to be given the controversial MMR jab last Wednesday as health chiefs began their two-week vaccination programme which will see children at more than 200 schools across Cheshire immunised. “It’s a major operation which will place a considerable strain on our resources – but it’s got to be done in the interests of the wider public health,” said Primary Care Trust

By Dave Goodban consultant Dr Guy Hayhurst. As of Monday, December 8, there had been 77 reported cases of infected children throughout the county, with 20 already confirmed by laboratory tests. Winsford is one of the worst affected areas, with 16 reported cases. There have been three cases in Northwich, and 18 in Middlewich. Sandbach and Crewe have also been hit hard. Health chiefs are imploring parents to give consent for their children to be given the vaccine. A HPA spokesman said: “We fully support the PCT in this major drive. Anyone who is currently unprotected should take the chance to be vaccinated now.”

IN LINE with chancellor Alistair Darling’s announcement in his pre-Budget report, Vale Royal Borough Council has reduced VAT rates on its services from 17.5% to 15%. The changes came into force on Monday, December 1, and last until December 31, 2009. The 2.5% reduction will now be reflected in service charges subject to VAT. Cllr Keith Musgrave said: “We are working as quickly as possible to ensure the VAT cut is passed on to people using services such as pest control and leisure centres. “But customers do need to be aware that not all services are subject to VAT, so things such as bulky item collection will not see any change.” For more information about charges, phone the council on 01606 862862.

Healthy hounds

CHESHIRE’S police dogs are all in tip-top condition, healthy and well cared for, according to the vice-chairman of the Police Authority, Margaret Ollerenshaw. Four authority members regularly visit the police dog training grounds at the force’s Winsford HQ, and receive reports on the condition of the kennels at the handlers’ home and vets’ reports on the health and well-being of the 40 dogs. The latest report to the authority reveals the German Shepherds, Labradors, Springer Spaniels, Rottweiler and cross breeds all meet the standards required. All of the dogs go through a 13-week basic training course and attend ‘refresher’ courses each year to keep their police dog licences.

A MID Cheshire man has published a book to raise money for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd at Backford, Chester, where his late wife was looked after. Ivor Goolding’s ‘A Cheshire Way of Life’ is about growing up in Cheshire in the 1940s-1960s. The book is on sale at Borders, Ellesmere Port, or by contacting Ivor on 01829 770173.

Always THINK before you drink AS the holiday season approaches, I’m urging people in Weaver Vale to ensure they leave their cars at home if they plan to drink this Christmas. In Weaver Vale, people are killed and seriously injured every year because of drink-driving. It’s why I’m backing the Government’s THINK! Campaign, which is raising awareness of the devastating consequences of drink-driving. Drink-driving can ruin lives. Last year 460 people died as a result of this recklessness and families across Britain were shattered by the menace of drink-driving. My message is clear. If you get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol you risk wrecking your own and other people’s lives. Don’t do it! It’s critical that people understand the destruction they could cause. What consultation?

YOUR correspondent “Villain”, who commented that all has gone quiet over the Northwich Vision regeneration scheme, will soon see a burst of council activity. This will take the form of a series of artist’s impressions of a new cultural centre resulting from an architects competition run by the borough council. These drawings will be the latest of many, stretching back some 15 years. Unfortunately, nothing is likely to be built for the duration of the recession. However, the recession may have a brighter side for the Northwich Vision. The delay will enable the Environment Agency to forecast the effects of climate change on the Barons Quay site, say five years down the line. I have asked VRBC to ask the agency

IT SAID in last week’s Chronicle (Wednesday, December 3) that the consultation into the five suggested Travellers’ sites had finished. Who was consulted? And if the outcome will be decided by the council’s ‘executive group’, then can’t they just decide what they want anyway, regardless of what whoever was consulted said? No-one wants Travellers living near them permanently, whatever they say. I wonder where the important people who make the final decision on where to put these Gypsy camps live? Probably not on Bradford Road in Winsford (where two of the five proposed sites are) or anywhere near any

this question and publish the results in the local papers. If there’s a flooding problem dwellings could be relocated higher, as I’ve already suggested, to overlook Barons Quay. STUART HOGG President, Northwich Heritage Society Cinder Hill, Whitegate

Vision in motion

REGARDING Stuart Hogg’s letter about the new cultural centre for Northwich (November 19 edition), I agree with most of his comments and, like him, I also admire Danish architecture. However, I think the design of the modern Danish cultural centre pictured would be totally out of keeping in Northwich and I would hope for a building far more sympathetic to the traditional Cheshire buildings. As for the ‘pipework and wheel’ structure, it is not only extraordinary, but inexplicable to visitors to the town and looks unkempt and uncared for. In short, an eyesore. TRICIA PARKER Hartford

Faith in politics

MANY people want a new political party that is family motivated and which wants the best for their children. As we are a Christian nation, our state schools should teach Christianity and moral values. Our children need to live in a traditional British family, once the bedrock of our nation. We need to get rid of people in power who have betrayed our faith and nation. MR K N HARVISON Victoria Road, Northwich

A DELEGATION from Winsford’s French twin town Deuil la Barre visited the town over the weekend. From Friday to Monday, Winsford Town Council also played host to visitors from the German town of Neider Eschbach, which has a friendship link with Winsford. The delegations were given a guided tour of the town to see the progress with new developments such as the Winsford Lifestyle Centre, the Weaver waterfront and the new Learning Zone. They also visited the police and fire headquarters and got a chance to see the new town twinning display in Winsford Library. On Sunday they were officially welcomed by the Winsford town mayor, Cllr Des Worthington.

Crash tailbacks

A CRASH on the A556 Chester Road at Oakmere last Wednesday morning caused tailbacks in both directions after a VW Polo collided with a parked car and flipped on to its roof. A 23-year-old female from Chester, who was driving the green Polo, was treated by paramedics at the scene, but suffered only minor injuries. The accident happened at around 8.40am near to Harringtons Caravans, and the road was clear by 10.15am. A police spokeswoman said enquiries were ongoing.

KIND-HEARTED donors dug deep to raise more than £400 for the BBC’s Children In Need appeal. The donations were collected during adult education classes at Sir John Deane’s College in the run up to the annual appeal, and the amount was confirmed last week. Patsy Chuter, adult education manager at SJD’s said: “We’d like to thank all our students who attend evening and weekend classes for their generosity.”

Businessman Lions celebrate birthday exposed himself to teenager BUSINESSMAN James Eaton has been ordered to register as a sex offender for five years after he “flashed” at an 18-year-old girl when he stopped his Audi car in Old Colwyn and asked for directions. Eaton, 34, of Hodge Lane, Hartford, allegedly had his trousers and boxer shorts down. He made a remark and carried out a lewd act, magistrates at Llandudno heard. He was placed on a two-year community order after he admitted exposing himself to a pedestrian at Old Colwyn. He must pay her £250 compensation and £60 costs. Prosecutor James Neary said the incident was very distressing for the victim. Defence solicitor Richard Williams said Eaton had no previous convictions.

Help for victims of Ethiopian drought GENEROUS youngsters at Hartford High School raised more than £500 during a Food Aid campaign to help povertystricken families around the world.

jects carried out by the organisation Worldwide Concern. In particular, they talked about the crisis in Ethiopia where drought has caused failed crops, death of livestock, devastation of livelihoods and, ultimately, malnutrition and starvation. The assembly finished with a plea for support and, though no formal fundraising events were planned, staff and pupils dug deep to help make a difference. Religious studies teacher Tim Lee, who co-ordinated the appeal, said: “The money raised covers the cost to irrigate a farm, turning dusty soil into productive land and offering the poverty-stricken a means of supporting themselves. “I’m blown away by the concern shown by our pupils and the touching thing is that they don’t want thanks for their work. “I’m very proud.”

Sir John Deane’s College

Students see work of pioneering institute YOUNG biologists have been given a unique chance to learn more about the ground-breaking Human Genome Project. A group of 22 students from Sir John Deane’s College recently visited The Sanger Institute in Cambridgeshire which has made giant strides in unlocking the secrets of DNA. The students are now studying the genes of the complex organisms which cause diseases such as malaria and MRSA and they are also looking at mutations in the DNA that lead to different kinds of cancer in the hope that this will help to develop more effective drugs. Teacher Bev Goodger said: “The students now have a much greater appreciation of what it is like to work in the forefront of science in this world-class establishment.”

Headteacher to retire after 27 years ONE of Northwich’s longest-serving headteachers is to retire after 27 years. David Coulbeck broke the news to the children, staff and governors of Moulton School that he will retire after the spring term 2009. Mr Coulbeck, who joined the village school in 1981, has led it forward to much acclaim – and although he’s looking forward to a well-earned rest, he’s sad to be leaving. He said: “It’s the right decision however hard it is, I’m leaving at the right time. The school is well-placed to meet the challenges of the future. “I’m proud to have built the school from one that was in need of support and development, and had no reputation, to one that is known throughout the county. “I feel it’s a job well done. We have former pupils working across the world as good citizens contributing to their communities.” In 2003 the school received a curriculum award from the Government’s Department of Schools and Families, and in 2005 earned an Artsmark gold award. An Ofsted report in February this year described Moulton School as ‘outstanding’. ■ WE want your school’s Christmas pictures! We can’t get around all the schools in this hectic festive period – so we want you to help us out. If your school’s staging a Christmas production, tell us when you’re having a full dress rehearsal (01244 606415).

PROUD: David Coulbeck will retire as headteacher of Moulton School. SB051208HEAD-02

School governor Michelle Daniel said: “The main thing about David is how special he makes every child feel. “He’ll leave a huge gap. Whoever we find will have to be very, very special indeed.”

They are more

Intruders use truck to smash down wall

JOYRIDERS broke into a compound in Daisy Bank Lane, Anderton, on Friday night.

They cut through a padlock on the main gate before breaking into a forklift truck and using it to smash down a wall.

WHILE many of Britain’s recession-battered businesses are counting the pennies and tightening the purse strings, a Northwich mum and her two daughters are bucking the trend. Lavern Barnes and able assistants Limara and Cassie recently opened So Glamorous Hair & Beauty on Manchester Road. And despite the grim financial climate, business appears to be booming. Beautician Lavern, who lives on Kingsmead, used to run a mobile business with her girls, but is delighted to have found a permanent premises. “It’s a dream come true for us,” she said. “We can now offer our clients a wide range of treatments in stylish and comfortable surroundings.” Previous clients from across Mid Cheshire were in-

sister Cassie, 20, will offer a range of holistic therapies including massages. Limara said: “Although our mobile business was very successful we were finding our clients might book us for hair or a nails treatment but

would then ask about everything from eye tints to manicure and waxing. “That’s when we decided to go for a salon which would give us the opportunity to offer the widest range of treatments under one roof.”

Council retains its quality status WINSFORD Town Council has retained its status as a ‘quality’ authority. The council, which was first granted Quality status in 2004, had to

provide detailed evidence to an accreditation panel in support of its application to retain the award, which will now run for another four years.

Amongst other things, the council had to prove that it was run professionally, and that it communicates well with local people. Town mayor Cllr Des

Worthington said he was “delighted but not surprised”. He added: “I was never in any doubt that we would receive the award, but it’s nice to be recognised.”

LIVERPOOL actress Claire Sweeney can’t quite believe how her career has turned out. The 37-year-old is getting ready to open in a month-long panto stint at the Regent Theatre in Claire Sweeney Hanley tomorrow, alongside Jonathan Wilkes, in Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs. It’s seven years since she became the first Celebrity Big Brother alongside fellow celebs such as Anthea Turner and Chris Eubank - and her career has blossomed. Claire first came to the nation’s attention as Lindsay Corkhill on Channel 4 soap Brookside before its demise in 2003. But, since her trial in the Big Brother house, the world has been her oyster. Claire can’t wait to hear all the booing and hissing coming her way once the curtain is raised tomorrow night. “Playing the Wicked Queen is great fun. She’s very glamorous and very camp. I’ve got some great songs to sing as well.” Until Sunday, January 11. Tickets are £13-£22. Box office: 0870 060 6649 or visit www.theambassadors.com/regent. Kevin plays it for laughs A FAMILIAR face is back on stage at Crewe’s Lyceum Theatre panto Jack and the Beanstalk. Brummie favourite Kevin McGreevy has returned for another Christmas following a star turn in last year’s offering Beauty and the Beast, this time playing the comic role of Simple Simon. McGreevy, who has also played a key role in the panto’s production, says he couldn’t resist the opportunity to tread the Crewe boards again. “I’m back for more and I just love it up here. The theatre is a beautiful place to be, especially at Christmas.” And he says that working alongside the dame Chris Casserley to strike up a comic partnership has been hard work but rewarding. “There’s a hell of a lot for me and Chris to do to keep the anarchy flowing. There’s plenty of mess and slapstick so it should be fun for everyone.” Jack and the Beanstalk runs at the Lyceum until Saturday, January 3. Show times vary and tickets are £10.50-£17.50, phone the box office on 01270 537333.

I-WITNESS (Emlyn Williams Theatre, Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Mold, Dec 11-12) Inspired by The Rings of Saturn by WG Sebald, Volcano Theatre Company present the story of a quintet of troubled individuals who attempt to entertain, persuade, amaze and unsettle audiences with curiosities, discoveries, observations and performances. BOEING BOEING (Liverpool Playhouse until Jan 17) The West End comedy hit comes to Liverpool. But when his long-lost cousin Robert arrives, things start to get turbulent. You can, at long last, start to plan for future spending. Possibly focusing on improvements in the home, or maybe even think about a complete change of residence altogether. After what seems like an age for you, this is your first opportunity to take the bull by the horns, and to make that all important changeover in your personal life. Call now to reveal a new admirer.

With a full moon on Friday, you are certainly not going to be the shy one in the corner my friend. Just beware of sharing secrets, which are not really yours to divulge. You are unlikely to win any respect if you do. Meetings with an ex can help you find closure at the weekend too. Call now to hear why this Christmas is such an exciting one.

This is one week where you should find that you no longer have to complain about your career. New and improved working conditions, and maybe even moves of job, help you to feel that you are beginning to make your mark in the world. Make that apology in the family before Thursday please. Call now for a successful compromise.

Leos and Aries seem to have the most lucrative offers for you in business this week. An apology is coming your way from a close one you were beginning to give up on, and not a moment too soon, I think you’ll agree. It’s taken a lot of courage for them to find the words you want to hear, so accept them with good grace. Call now for the full story.

You’re running out of time to say what is needed to repair your love life. Some aspects of your chart suggest you are frozen with fear, but if you could see the benefits both of your lives would receive, you’d say what is necessary now. The moon squares Neptune on Wednesday and can turn love in your favour. Call now for instructions.

A new face, which enters your life about this time, is set to change the course of your destiny. You began this month, thinking you knew what the coming year was going to offer to you, but how wrong you were my friend. By the time this month draws to a close, you will have raised the stakes. Call me now to hear about this productive time.

Stop worrying about things which aren’t in your control and focus on the positive, Libra. A financial worry is easily solved, if you are willing to communicate with those who hold the power, which has so far not been the case. Be nice to a family member’s new partner at the weekend. They’re here to stay. Call now to hear your whole horoscope.

You found it hard to please all of your family last week, due to the fact they all wanted a little piece of you at the same time. The goalposts have moved this week though, and you start to realise that you don’t have to ask how high, when they say jump. News of a birth or pregnancy shocks you, but is actually a blessing in disguise. Call now for details.

Education is well starred for you and many of you archers will be making mental commitments, if not physical ones for a better future. You’re no longer afraid to give your time and energy to things, because it’s about what you want, and not about what looks good to others. Call now to hear why links from the past stir financial issues.

There is much you want to get through, if you are to enjoy the coming weekend with a clear conscience. Why therefore, don’t you make that phone call so we can all sleep easier? Their response should be far more pleasing than you had first imagined! Call my starline now to hear why it’s the perfect week to ask for more in your career.

You have been playing games in love for months and not just weeks, and even though you got your fingers burnt at the beginning of the year, there is no reason why this should now happen again. Trust in what you are feeling; the stars will lead you well, especially on Thursday. Call now to make the most of what Venus is offering.

You Pisces, can look forward to a better response regarding your freedom. Don’t abuse this newfound trust though. Use it well and show them respect. Someone you used to hold a candle for, reveals a new side to them, which gives you cause to shift your allegiance. Better suitors await, as events will soon prove. Call now for details.

It was never a penalty, no-one even appealed.” At 2-1 down, a Simon Grand penalty was brilliantly saved by Boro keeper Lee Hook before Vics centre half Steve Robinson was sent off by referee Andrew Sainsbury in the 61st minute for pushing Matt Crabb. King was sent to the stand for complaining about Robinson’s dismissal. He said: “The kid that won the penalty for them went into his face, he was abusing him. Robbo pushed

him away and the linesman’s seen the push. I appealed the decision with the fourth official. “It’s very dangerous what they made me do. They escorted me through the people to the changing room. If anyone had the chance to attack me they could have. The FA has to have a look at that.” Soon after, Simon Wormull curled in his side’s third strike before Ashley Barnes bagged the second of his two goals to make it 4-1. Vics’ scorer Wagstaff followed his teammate in for an early bath after what King describes as a “50-50” challenge. The referee had only given a free kick before the linesman called him over and he returned to produce a red card. King’s assistant Justin Skinner was also given his marching orders for disputing the decision. Vics slip a place in the Blue Square Premier standings, a point away from propping up the league, following Grays’ surprise success at York – and King is still without a win since he took charge.

Witton Albion - UniBond League Premier

Mistakes prove costly again TWO goals in six second half minutes saw off Albion after they had gone into the break a goal up against Boston United at Wincham Park. An 11th minute header by centre back Paul Booth from a Mark Smyth corner gave the home side the lead and for 56 minutes it looked like Witton were on course to end their wretched home record. Boston had a lot of possession but were restricted to shots from distance that never tested home keeper Greg Smith. Oliver James, one of five Witton players making their home league debuts, looked threatening, forcing saves from the visiting keeper. And Witton were denied a good penalty shout when Brian Pritchard looked to have been pushed in the back. Boston introduced David Farrell 10 minutes into the second half, and in the 67th minute he struck a high ball from the left touch-line towards the far post. Keeper Greg Smith failed to gauge the flight and could only palm the ball against the post and into the net. Six minutes later, the defence failed to cut out a low struck corner that allowed The Pilgrims’

Ollie Ryan to score his 17th of the season and Boston’s winner. Boss Gary Finley has released 13 players in less than four weeks since he came in and says players coming and going may have temporarily unsettled his team. He said: “It’s frustrating. The first goal was identical to the one we conceded against Worksop. He was 45 yards out and it was just a punt upfield from the touchline. “I was just waiting for the keeper to come and catch it. “Their tails were up, then they got back into the game and had a spell where they had us under pressure, then scored from a corner. “They’re just sloppy mistakes and they can be avoided. We’ve got to dust ourselves down.” The result keeps Albion rooted to the bottom of the Unibond League Premier Division. On Friday night (7.45) Albion travel to Cammell Laird. On Tuesday, they play Laird again in their rescheduled UniBond League Challenge Cup home third round tie. Finley added: “The main thing is to pick up points in the league. Everyone keeps saying how much we’ve improved but we need to pick points up.”

DENIED: Brian Pritchard.

England call-up at the double

A NORTHWICH schoolgirl is taking on the best of Europe after retaining her place in the England Under 17s squad. Hayley Rogers, from Delamere, starred on international duty recently taking on girls from Sweden, Scotland and Wales at the Northumberland U19 International event. The 16-year-old, who attends Tarporley High School, played a full role in the team’s performance which saw England win the tournament overall. Hayley, who is ranked fourth in the country at her age group, has played

badminton for England since the age of 10 and was recently nominated for the Young Sportsperson of the Year award at the Cheshire and Warrington Sports Awards. And after enjoying huge success at a junior level, Hayley is setting her sights on the greatest prize of all – a place in the Great Britain Olympic team. She said: “I am hoping to one day play in the Olympics but that is a little bit far off. I hope to do my A-levels and then perhaps go to university. At Manchester Uni-

After playing for her school and then Chester and District, she will now join up with the U17 squad before being chosen for future international matches. “I just started playing rounders at school and really enjoyed it. My teacher sent me for trials at Chester and District and once there, I got picked for the England team!” With GCSE results due in the summer, Hayley is hoping to continue her studies at Tarporley sixth-form taking A-levels in physics, maths, economics and German.

United survive to win thriller Football - Round-up WINSFORD United registered their second win in a row despite a nervy finish against Atherton Collieries at the Barton Stadium. A rejuvenated Atherton side failed to threaten the Blues who ended the game 3-2 victors. Winsford were the first to strike when John Riley struck the angle of the bar from 30 yards out. The ball fell to Darren Connell who planted it in the bottom left corner. Four minutes later the scores were level when a corner on the left was headed home by the visitors’ Craig Hoyland. The second half began with a free kick 30 yards out on the left and Lee Madin planted the dead ball in the top right corner from 30 yards. On 83 minutes, Connell weaved his way through two defenders and pulled the ball back to Couch, returning to midfield from Cammell Laird, who drilled his shot into the bottom left corner. Hoyland scored for Atherton two minutes into injury time but it was too late. Boss Joe Gibiliru said: “It was a well-deserved victory. The chances we missed could have finished the game.” The Blues now lie sixth in the North West Counties Premier Division, though the chasing pack all have games in hand on the Blues. “We’ve got points in the bag,” adds Gibiliru. “We need to win two or three more games on the spin. It is close so we need to keep winning. “The confidence is better, we just need to go on to win more games.” Keeper Alex James, 18, deputised for suspended Jamie Mottershead and impressed with good saves early on. On Saturday Winsford visit Squires Gate (3pm) and returning to the squad will be Jacob Baptista, returning from international duty with England Colleges, and John Bluck. Stephen Siddell begins a three match ban. ■ Barnton returned to losing ways, when they went down 1-0 to Club AZ at Townfield Lane on Saturday. They had last week won their first game under manager Mick Duckett in Division One of the Cheshire League. Now just a point away from propping up the league, Barnton more than held their own against their strong-looking fifth placed visitors but lost to a goal scored just before half time. Boss Duckett said: “It wasn’t a bad result. In the second half we had opportunities but couldn’t finish them. “We held our own and we’re unlucky not to get a draw. “We’ve lost by one or two goals to teams in the top five but beat Garswood United 3-1. “This Saturday we can play a mid-table team in Stalybridge Celtic, get a result and get back to winning ways. “Hopefully we can put in a performance like that aginst the sides that are around us.” Barnton face Northwich Victoria in the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup on tonight Wednesday (December 10) at 7.45pm at the Victoria Stadium. Vics are five divisions above and Duckett is realistic about his side’s chances. “We’ll see how we go on with that,” he added. Lostock Gralam were 2-1 victors over Middlewich Town away in the Mid-Cheshire Cup on Saturday. The Grey Lambs, who lie in seventh place in Cheshire League Division Two, play at home against Warrington Town Reserves on Saturday (2pm).

Revival is cut short

Wigan 23 Winnington Park 18

AFTER last week’s first victory of the season, over relegation rivals Dukinfield, Saturday’s narrow defeat at the hands of another struggling side was a bitter blow for Winnington. Playing in surprisingly perfect conditions, supporters at Wingates Lane were treated to an exciting encounter and saw the hosts take an early 12-0 lead. Park were caught napping as Wigan forwards Winstanley and Aspinall crossed the whitewash but after weathering further pressure, Mark Warr’s men fought their way back into the game. It was from some good lineout ball that Park scored their first points as Ian Lamb scored his second try in two games after Harry Stubbs had made inroads into the Wigan defence. Park were soon on the attack again and a great break from dangerous winger Rob Garbett attracted three defenders. Garbett passed the ball back inside to Mark Patterson who scored a great team try. Ben Elliot hit the conversion to bring Park level at half-time. Wigan started the second half as they did the first on the front foot but indiscipline handed them the lead through a Jones penalty. Park levelled through an Elliot penalty and were then in front when the same man added a superb drop-goal with ten minutes remaining. But sadly, not for the first time this season, basic errors and a lack of discipline cost Park the vital two points. A late tackle gave Jones the chance to level the scores and then the hosts grabbed a late winning try as Park’s defence crumbled. With Dukinfield winning, Park are now only above the sole relegation spot on points difference and head to promotion chasing Widnes on Saturday before the Christmas break. Other scores: Winnington Park 2nds 29 Crewe and Nantwich 2nds 15 (tries: Brennan 3, Annells, Phoenix; cons: Annells 2), WP 3rds 43 Moore 2nds 3 (tries: Morrison 3, Ellis 3, Thurlwell; cons: Thurlwell 4).

President’s Day pride Rugby union Northwich 17 Rossendale 11

JOHN Cosgrove celebrated his own President’s Day in style as the Blacks produced a superb performance to mount a serious assault on the North West Two summit. A win at Rochdale this Saturday could put them in top spot. Rossendale arrived at Moss Farm as joint leaders and looked the part in the early exchanges, deservedly grabbing the first score after 20 minutes when fullback James Squires finished off a slick three-quarters try. James Bramhall missed the conversion but stretched the visitors’ lead with a well taken penalty. To their credit the Blacks dug deep and came back into the game with a Matt Bebbington penalty just before the break to keep the hosts in contention. Whatever Northwich coach Kevin Greaves said to his squad at the break seemed to take immediate effect and a superb break by wing forward Sam Naylor set up Aussie fullback Simon Pratt for a try near to the posts. Bebbington converted and suddenly the Blacks looked the stronger outfit. Northwich then surged ahead when Pratt broke free on the counter-attack and set up fans’ favourite Steve Campbell who finished off the move of the match. Bebbington converted. The Blacks could have sealed the win and killed off Rossendale had two scoring passes gone to hand and it could have cost them the win, watched by a large crowd. For the last 20 minutes Rossendale threw everything at the hosts. But the Blacks’ defence, to a man, stood firm and claimed the two points which now puts fourth-placed Northwich just two points behind leaders Altrincham Kersal. Chairman Sam Naylor said: “This was a tremendous win and who knows what lies in store for the team of the town in 2009.” Northwich travel to Rochdale on Saturday (2.15pm). ■ Northwich 2nds pulled of an impressive victory over Manchester 3rds on Saturday. A mixture of sheer guts and determination culminated in a 30-24 win. Other scores: Caldy Colts 18 Northwich Colts 10 (try: Jones; con: Devaney; pen: Devaney).

ROUNDUp Arthur reigns alone

ANGLING: Arthur Kenney finally sealed victory in the Brown Cup but did so in farcical circumstances. Leading the Barnton & Frodsham AC event going into the final round of the six-match series on the River Dane in Northwich town centre, Kenney was the only competitor to turn up and was awarded five points for attending. His total of 115 points was more than enough to claim the prize ahead of Calvin Tagg with 88 points and third-placed Peter Moore with 87. In Wednesday’s match on Heesom’s Pool, Dave Blears claimed the win with 1-4-4 of small rudd, perch and roach. The only other angler to put fish in his net was Trevor Jones who finished with 0-14-14 of rudd and roach. In Saturday’s match on the pool, again just two reelmen troubled the scales. In first place was Paul Lowe who landed two skimmers for 1-15-1. Stan Butterworth claimed second with a solitary perch for 0-3-0.

SWIMMING: Winsford Swim Team was represented by sisters Joanne and Stacey Waterman at the Happy Christmas meeting at Chesterfield. Competing in the 14-years age group, Joanne won the 200m individual medley in a time of two minutes 34 seconds. She also claimed a hat-trick of runners-up spots in the girls 200m freestyle, the 100m butterfly and 200m butterfly. She also finished fifth in the 50m backstroke. Stacey fought hard in the 15-years age group finishing fifth in the 400m freestyle and sixth in the 50m backstroke. She also finished eighth in the 200m freestyle and seventh in the 50m freestyle.

COLLEGE SPORT: Four Sir John Deane’s College swimmers finished third in the 4x50m relay at the recent English Schools Divisional Championships, in Birkenhead. Students Ashley Walton, George White, Alex Hay and Jack Steele were pipped by Caldy College and Priestley, and completed the race in just under one minute 44 seconds. Lesley McLaughlin, manager of the SJD leisure centre, said: “The team swam really well and we would like to congratulate them on their success.”

Battling Park slip into the drop zone DESPITE taking a surprise lead at high-flying Bramhall on Saturday, Winnington Park never looked like winning and fell to a 3-1 loss to drop into the relegation places. Man of the match John-Paul Dodd kept Park in the game with some smart saves but Winnington were second best. Mark Leigh put Park ahead from the penalty spot but this only provoked their fourth-placed hosts who could have levelled immediately but a combination of Dodd’s efforts and the post denied them.

Hockey

But Bramhall did find themselves on equal terms through a deflected goal and then took the lead as Park defence allowed a home man to run unchallenged before firing into the corner. Alastair and Julian Buckle looked lively when they came on as Park rallied and came close to equalising – Pete Evans testing the keeper and Karl Kueres almost finishing after some good build up play. But just when Park were

threatening, they fell further behind from a swift counter-attack . Other scores: Crewe Vagrants 2nds 1 Winnington Park 2nds 4 (Huggon, Dodd, Bowden, Charlton), WP 3rds 8 Sale 2nds 3 (Mottershaw 4, Hughes 3, Sedgwick), Tameside 5ths 4 WP 4ths 1 (Crouchley). On Saturday, Park seek a much-needed win at home to Preston 2nds (12.30pm). The 2nds host Neston South Wirral 3rds (2pm), WP 3rds head to NSW 4ths while 4ths host Chester 6ths (3.30pm).

NETBALL: Northwich Sapphires won a thrilling match against Halton 1 in the Warrington & District Premier League. Ex-England international Alex Garnett was the star of the show as the Sapphires claimed a 24-21 victory at Birchwood Leisure Centre. 0-3-0.

KING PLANS SOME WINDOW SHOPPING

NORTHWICH Vics’ revolving door transfer system appears set to continue after boss Steve King admitted he is desperate to bring new faces in next month.

The manager will crank up his squad re-shuffle when the transfer window reopens on January 1, after his winless streak as manager stretched to five games. King maintains his side’s performances are better than results suggest, but with Vics second from bottom he needs points sooner rather than later. “We need to strengthen the team in certain areas,” said the boss. “I’m frustrated at the moment.” “The players I’ve brought in have been man of the match performers and in January we’re looking to really strengthen the team.

Football

By Dave Goodban “Everyone can see we’re playing much better football but I haven’t got a magic wand.” Northwich chairman Jim Rushe vowed to back the manager, but said the dead wood will have to be shifted to accommodate new faces. “Steve knows what budget he’s working with,” Rushe told the Chronicle. “We’re not suddenly going to find massive amounts of money, but he knows what’s available and we’ll support in as much as he can.” King this week agreed a deal with Charlton to keep midfielder Rashid Yussuff’s at the Marston’s Arena for another month. But Scott Wagstaff, who scored be-

fore being sent off at Eastbourne on Saturday, has been sent back to The Valley, where he will serve his three-match suspension. Defender Richie Sutton, signed from Stafford Rangers in the summer, has joined UniBond Division One North title chasers FC Halifax Town on a month-long loan deal. On Saturday Vics host York City, currently 15th in the Blue Square Premier, knowing a win could see them move to within a point of safety. But the clash with Wrexham, due to be played last Wednesday night has been put back until spring after being postponed because of a frozen pitch at Wincham. Cheshire Constabulary told the clubs that plans to play the game later this month would have to be shelved as they didn’t have the avail-

able resources to police the fixture. It has also been announced Vics will be televised twice in a week, after their January 8 trip to Woking was added to Setanta Sports’ live schedule, which also sees King’s men travel to Altrincham on New Year’s Day. Vics can expect to pocket £2,000 from each clash. Chairman Rushe told the Chronicle there has been no developments regarding the potential purchase of the Marston’s Arena and surrounding land. “We’re still waiting for news from the receivers on whether our bid has been accepted,” he said. ■ Tonight, Wednesday, Vics host neighbours Barnton at the Marston’s Arena in the Mid-Cheshire FA Senior Cup. Entry is £5 for adults pay and £2 for concessions. Kick off is 7.45pm.

Starlets will get stuck into Toffees THREE Mid Cheshire footballers are heading to Goodison Park next week to take on Everton in a dream cup tie. Teenagers Jack McKay, Steve McNichol and Nathan Southern are part of the Nantwich Town 18s side who meet the mighty Merseyside club in the Third Round of the FA Youth Cup on Monday night (ko 7.30pm). Jack, who plays at right back or right midfield, lives on Kingsmead and central midfielder Steve comes from Moulton.

CUP CLASH: Jack McKay and (inset) Nathan Southern

Star striker Nathan, who lives at Lulworth Close, Winsford, is the team’s top scorer. He has already overcome one huge obstacle in his short career after being diagnosed with DVT – deep vein thrombosis – in his left shoulder earlier this year. But he is now fighting fit and hungry for cup glory. The Mid Cheshire trio have already helped Nantwich beat Wrexham and Macclesfield to reach round three, and are now looking forward to playing on the big stage. “It’s the biggest game any of them have ever played in,” said manager Martin Stubbs. “We watched Everton a couple of weeks ago and they had two lads playing who’d already played Premier League football.” Nantwich have a 100% record so far this season, but Martin knows his side will have to produce a massive performance to topple the Toffees. “It’s a massive game but confidence is high and they’re all itching to get involved,” he said. “We’re looking forward to it.”

SUPPORT: Olympic hero Darren Campbell

Gold star Darren is right on track Athletics

OLYMPIC gold medallist Darren Campbell arrived in Northwich last night to kick-start fundraising activities that will transform athletics in Vale Royal. The Team GB star met Vale Royal Athletics Club officials and members at Rudheath Leisure Centre on Tuesday to support the club’s bid to help fund a new athletics track at Knight’s Grange Sports Complex. As part of the £8m redevelopment of the club’s Winsford base, the track surface is due to be modernised along with the installation of new floodlights and changing facilities. Vale Royal Borough Council has pledged £99,000 alongside funding from partners Winsford Town Council, Sport England, Liverpool’s Foundation for Sport and others. But due to local authorities being hit by the financial downturn, there is a huge shortfall of about £200,000. It is hoped that by getting the support of Olympic hero Campbell, who won gold as part of the 4x100m relay team at the 2004 Athens Games, many people will take an interest in the project and attract vital funding that would transform an already successful club. VRAC member Mike Harrington, who was instrumental in bringing the scheme to Campbell’s attention, said: “Hopefully having an Olympic gold medallist like Darren working with the kids, raising the profile of the club and lending his support to our track bid will help. “One of my friends is the physio and fitness coach at Stoke City Football Club who Darren works with on a regular basis. We are very lucky to be able to have someone of Darren’s status come down and help us out.” It is hoped that once completed, Knight’s Grange will become the centre of Cheshire athletics and that Vale Royal will grow to become an even greater force in the sport. The club – which has more than 300 active senior and junior members – trains twice a week at Knight’s Grange but despite the existing shale track being of a poor standard, Vale Royal athletes are among the best in the county. ■ See next week’s Chronicle for pictures of Campbell’s visit to Northwich.
