TEENAGER’S KILLER JAILED FOR LIFE By Dave Goodban

A DRUG addict from Northwich has been jailed for life for battering and stabbing a teenager to death in a pre-meditated attack.

MURDERER: Drug addict Ian Broughton has been jailed for life.

Killer Ian Broughton, 28, attacked 17-year-old Rhys Butler in a drug den flat in Castle on May 27 last year, repeatedly smashing him over the head with a hammer and leaving him brain damaged and bleeding to death on the floor. The former Witton Church Walk and Rudheath High pupil, of Priory Street, then stabbed the teenager twice in the back “to silence him”. He made “a token effort” to remove traces of his crime before fleeing on a mountain bike with £380 cash and “11 or 12” £10 bags of heroin stolen from Rhys’ dead body. Broughton pleaded guilty to murdering the Speke teenager

at Chester Crown Court on January 9. And on Thursday he was sentenced to a minimum of 22 years behind bars by Mrs Justice Swift. The court heard Broughton had planned to attack Rhys, who dealt heroin and crack in Northwich, for at least a week, after the teenager had refused his request for drugs on credit, and ambushed him at the Peckforton Way flat of fellow addict Jayne Sharp. Prosecutor Patrick Harrington said: “A young life was squandered because of the ravening hunger of a drug addict.” Judge Swift said the attack on Rhys was “brutally executed for gain and revenge”. DCI Paul Rumney, who led the police case against Broughton, said: “This investigation highlights the misery drug dealing brings and the sentence reflects the disproportionate amount of violence used by Broughton in satisfying his own ends.”

One left in site bid for Gypsies FOUR of the five Gypsy sites proposed by Vale Royal Borough Council have been thrown out – but one in Winsford remains a possibility. Planned camps at Chester Road, Sandiway and Saxons Lane in Northwich were scrapped at a meeting of the borough’s executive committee last Thursday at Wyvern House, along with a site in Frodsham. Two locations either end of New Road in Winsford were considered at greater length, with the committee deciding to press ahead with proposals for the New Road North project. The site at the other end was deemed unsuitable as it is part of the Winsford Waterfront regeneration. Further investigation will take place into the feasibility of a camp for three caravans at the former Cheshire County Council household waste site. Winsford Mayor Cllr Des Worthington said: “This site is only yards from the extremely busy main road. In my view it’s not fit for human habitation.” Eddisbury MP Stephen O’Brien, whose constituency covers Sandiway and Winsford, welcomed the shelving of the Chester Road proposals and vowed to continue fighting plans for the Winsford site. He said: “The selection criteria, and consultation process, was flawed from the outset and continues to be so.” But Vale Royal’s lead councillor for community safeguards, Cllr John Turnbull, countered: “From the start of this process we took a decision to conduct wide and extensive public consultation, aiming to reach as many people as we could to find out their views.” ■ To view the report from the executive group, visit www.valeroyal.gov.uk

COMING SOON: The Winsford Lifestyle Centre is expected to open at the end of next month. WINSFORD Lifestyle Centre could become a haven for unhealthy patients after it was revealed GPs across the borough will be able to send them there with ‘get fit’ prescriptions. Vale Royal Borough Council works alongside Central and Eastern Cheshire Primary Care Trust to provide facilities for the Exercise on Prescription referral scheme, designed to help patients improve their fitness by offering 24 gym, swimming or ‘aqua-fit’ sessions at half the normal price. Patients at any medical centre in Vale Royal can be referred on to the scheme.

By Dave Goodban They can already be sent to Moss Farm, but will soon benefit from the state-of-the-art £10.8m facility, which is replacing the existing Winsford Sports Complex. “The scheme is about playing an important role in helping people who are most at risk to enjoy a more active lifestyle,” said a borough council spokesperson. “GPs are always in contact with pa-

tients whose health could benefit from increasing their level of physical activity. If your doctor feels that you could benefit, then they will refer you.” The 4,442sq m two-storey facility, scheduled to open at the end of February, will include a health suite and spa, a sauna, two squash courts and a 50-station gym. Winsford mayor Des Worthington said: “Any scheme which encourages and helps people get healthy is very welcome, and the new centre will be a great place for the people of Winsford to go and try and get fit.”

Ex-Vics chairman forces squad out of Arena home MIKE Connett’s debt-ridden company Beaconet has been given a stay of execution, after a High Court hearing to decide whether it should be wound up was adjourned for a third time. But the financial problems of the beleaguered former Northwich Vics chairman paled into insignificance last week as he forced the club out of its home after stripping it of all safety equipment, prompting Trading Standards to shut the ground down for the second time in two months. A removals truck rolled up at the Marston’s Arena on Tuesday morning, and everything from fire extinguishers to CCTV equipment was boxed up. On Thursday, Connett banned Vics owner Jim Rushe and secretary Derek Nuttall from the ground, sacked groundsman Joe Biddle and allowed a team of workers to play football on the pitch two days before the league game against Histon, which was eventually

moved to Altrincham’s Moss Lane. “It is not really economically viable to play at Altrincham,” said Vics owner Jim Rushe. “But it’s very good of them to let us play.” Beaconet was due before Mr Registrar Simmonds last Wednesday, when a winding-up petition brought by Bank of Scotland over a five-figure debt was due to be heard. But the hearing was adjourned again until January 28, the same day as Northwich Victoria (2004) Limited is due in court for a similar hearing. Vics’ hearing is expected to be put back to allow Jim Rushe’s consortium to finalise the purchase of the Marston’s Arena and surrounding land from administrators Deloitte, who seized Beaconet’s main asset late last year to recover £1.2m owed in unpaid tax by the company to Clydesdale Bank.

STRIPPED: The Marston’s Arena was rendered unfit to host Vics’ home game with Histon on Saturday. JK130109VICS-006

Police forced to tighten belt

Correction: Stuart Williamson

POLICE in Cheshire must make £1m in savings this year to balance their budget. Cheshire Police Authority chairman Peter Nurse said the credit crunch, rising inflation and a council tax cap have all helped to curtail their planned spend. He said: “For 2009 the Government has increased the grant for policing by 2.5% and have limited our council tax increase to a maximum of 3%, an extra 8p per week on a Band D household. “The credit crunch has also affected policing and like everyone, we have had to manage the effects of higher inflation.”

In a report last week about the use of Tasers by Cheshire police in Northwich, The Chronicle incorrectly stated that Mr Stuart Williamson had pleaded guilty to assault and affray. We are happy to confirm Mr Williamson had not made a plea in court in response to the allegations. On Monday the case was sent to Crown Court for hearing. Mr Williamson has also asked us to point out that he did not threaten children during the incident in Granville Road, Leftwich, which gave rise to the charges. The Chronicle apologises to Mr Williamson and his family for any distress caused.

Entrepreneurs have T-shirt market sewn up

By Ben Coulbeck

TWO Northwich students have taken the first steps to building their own business empire by launching a clothing company. Will Cotterill, who studies graphic design at Mid-Cheshire College, and Laurence Norman, who is a business and graphics student at St Nicholas High School sixth form, have created their own line of clothing, Go Nature Go. The entrepreneurial duo wanted to form a business that benefits to Fairtrade companies and links in with the theme of nature. Sixteen-year-old Will, from Hartford, said: “We initially had the idea to create clothing from natural materials that is anti-sweat-shop based.” The pair began their project in September last year and have taken their first order. Laurence, 18, from Anderton said: “We researched a lot of companies for screen printing and managed to make a good deal.” The students also sponsor local band Thought Explode, who wear their T-shirts on stage. ■ To see the range of Go Nature Go products, log on to www.myspace.com/gonaturego.

Demise of Woolies is necessary end to era JUSTWilliam The musings of a middle-aged man from Middle England WE VIEW many things as constant in our lives. Things we think will never change. But the sad fact is, very little is constant except war and death. Everything else is subject to change. Sometimes with surprising suddenness like the fall of Soviet Russia and the Berlin Wall. Over the last 30 years or so we have seen the demise of the coal, steel, car and ship building industries, and locally that of ICI. But that has not prepared us for the shock demise of Woolworths. I doubt there are many who can remember Northwich without Woolworths. I even remember a time when the local buses passed the store before Witton Street became pedestrianised. It was where virtually everyone shopped and where many did their one and only bit of shoplifting. I read somewhere lately that if we all took back what we had pinched, the company would be back in profit. I’m not sure that is true as most of the pilfering I remember was petty stuff, usually some form of initiation ceremony into a local gang – I even know one or two people who were so ashamed at what they had done they took the item back the same day. But the sad fact is Woolworths had had its day. It was a sad shadow of its bustling former self, as people began buying their goods at the local supermarkets (which now sell everything from cabbages to plasma TVs). While one cannot but feel sad for those people who have lost their jobs, jobs I am sure they thought were for life, it is simply the way of the world. People once poured money into toll roads, then into canals, then into railroads, sure at the time that they were a safe bet. Where do we go from here you may ask? Onwards and upwards hopefully. With luck a new High Street store will take on the Woolworths site and offer new jobs for those who have lost theirs. Hopefully, as it was after the last recession in the 1980s, we will eventually see new jobs taking the place of the old, and a new Northwich will rise from the ashes. That said I will still miss getting my pick-and-mix from Woolies.

Trust bids to improve lives

AS the festive fun comes to an end and a less-than-prosperous 2009 looms ahead, suddenly the January blues seem bleaker than normal. But for a significant core of youngsters, the prospect of a happy new year seems even more elusive than ever. A Prince’s Trust report suggests that one in 10 young people living in the North West think their life is meaningless, with those not in work or training twice as likely to think their life has little or no purpose. These findings are especially alarming when you consider that at the end of 2008, more than 60,000 young people aged between 16 and 29 were claiming job seekers allowance in the North West alone. The long-term emotional toll of their unfulfilled ambitions and the region’s loss of their potential is a sad loss and one that The Trust aims to tackle. The Prince’s Trust in the North West supported around 5,000 disadvantaged young people last year, developing their self esteem and skills to

SO THE majority of residents say that the two New Road sites in Winsford are the best sites for Travellers? get jobs. Three in four of these young people went on to find work or complete further training. This number speaks volumes about the importance of second chances but also offers hope to a generation who think that the New Year has nothing to offer. Remembering genocide’s toll

JANUARY 27 is Holocaust Memorial Day. This is the day when we and other European countries remember the victims of the Holocaust, and other genocides in countries like Rwanda, Yugoslavia and Iraq. It is important for us to remember these tragic events so as to avoid history repeating itself. January 27, 1945, is the date that Russian forces liberated Auschwitz. And soon after the allies,

Mum’s hope that son’s killer rots By Laura Day

THE mother of murdered teenager Rhys Butler said her son’s killer has taken two lives – Rhys’ and her own. And after watching Ian Broughton being sentenced to life imprisonment at Chester Crown Court, she said: “I hope he rots in hell.” Tina Butler, 41, from Speke, told The Chronicle: “He has taken everything from me. No amount of jail time will bring back my son. “Broughton is a sly and devious person who took a child’s life for a small amount of drugs, which he would have got through in a matter of hours.” Rhys, 17, began selling heroin and crack after being recruited by a Merseyside gang who sent him to Northwich to “learn the ropes”.

On May 27 last year, Broughton ambushed him and brutally murdered him in a pre-planned attack. The court heard he told an associate: “If I’m going to do it I’ll do it so he can’t remember who done it.” Heroin addict Broughton, 28, later bragged to a cell-mate he had killed the Liverpool FC fan, describing the first hammer blow he landed on Rhys from behind as “a good smack”. DCI Paul Rumney said: “Rhys Butler was a vulnerable youth who foolishly agreed to deal drugs. He was impressionable and attracted by the perceived wealth drug dealing might bring. “His vulnerabilities were exploited by Broughton, an older,

violent and intimidating drug user who capitalised on Rhys’s naivety.” Mrs Butler added: “Had he just hit Rhys and robbed him, it would have been the best thing for my son because it would have scared him away from what he was doing. “But it was a cold calculated murder and he has shown us no remorse or feeling. It wasn’t just Rhys’ life he took, it was mine too.” ■ Jayne Sharp, who lived at the Peckforton Way flat where Rhys’ battered body was found, was jailed for three years. The 30-year-old, a fellow drug addict, admitted two offences of being concerned in the supply of heroin, two of being concerned in the supply of crack cocaine, and two of permitting her home to be used to produce class A drugs.

School praised after taking place in top 100 LEFTWICH County High School has been named as one of the top 100 schools in the country for sustained improvement. The latest Key Stage 4 table, left, shows the number of pupils getting five or more GCSEs at A*-C grade, including English and Maths, rose from 41% in 2005 to 60% in 2008. The school also had one of the lowest truancy rates in Mid Cheshire. Weaver Vale MP Mike Hall was full of praise for

headteacher Julie Brandreth, her team and the pupils this week. He said: “I’m delighted The County High School has seen such a big improvement in its results. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of all the pupils and staff at the school, including the headteacher. “This is a great achievement which everybody involved in the school can be truly proud of and I hope the school will go from strength to strength.”

Grange confirms reputation for excellence THE Grange School, Hartford, has had its position as one of the best-performing schools in the country confirmed with the publication of the Government’s latest post-16 league tables. The Bradburns Lane school is the only A-Level school in England to feature in the top 50 for both its A-Level results and value-added score, which is based on sustained improvement.

In the Key Stage 5 table, The Grange was 29th for its results and 39th in the ‘added value’ calculation. A spokesperson said the school’s GCSE performance is hampered by the Government’s non-acceptance of International GCSE maths, which the school takes in preference to normal GCSE maths.

NEWSFile Milk spill drain drama

A LARGE milk spillage blocked drains and caused tailbacks in Northwich last week. More than 30 four-pint cartons burst after falling off a float at 5.20am on Wednesday at Kingsmead. Firefighters and police co-ordinated a clean-up operation of the area near the second roundabout opposite Sir John Deane’s College. Plastic covers were placed over the drains to stop any further blockages and the crates of milk were moved from the road. The mess was fully cleared by 9.15am.

Ex-chairman reveals plan for new stadium

Fundraising lecture

AN illustrated talk on French art by expert Adrian Sumner will take place at Davenham Players’ Theatre, Church Street next Tuesday night. The lecture, entitled Revolution: A Turbulent History of French Art, is one of two events being organised to raise funds for St Luke’s (Cheshire) Hospice at Winsford and the Macmillan nurses. It will start at 7.30pm. There will be a complimentary drink included in the admission price of £4 per person. Tickets can be bought in advance on 01606 42920.

Burglars spotted

TWO men are wanted by police after burgling the home of an elderly woman in Weaverham. The pair were spotted leaving a house on Walnut Avenue at around noon on Saturday. The victim, who is in her 80s, was not at home. She returned to find a back window smashed and cash and digital cameras missing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Det Con Matt Stenton on 0845 4580000.

GOING DOWN? The Barton Stadium could be bulldozed and the land used for housing. TC140703 fbungee-003

PLANS to redevelopment the Barton Stadium in Winsford could be shelved after it emerged a developer is being lined up to build the town’s football club a new home. Vale Royal mayor Malcolm Gaskill dropped the “bombshell” at a fundraising meeting for the proposed renovation of the run-down ground last Tuesday night. The developer, who has not been identified, could bulldoze the stadium and build houses on the site, and create a “Conference standard” replacement on land off Bradford Road,

By Dave Goodban previously ruled by Vale Royal as unsuitable for housing. Winsford has been identified by the new Cheshire West and Chester authority as a “housing hotspot” area, meaning more new homes need to be built to meet demand. Cllr Gaskill, who was United chairman from 1989-92, initiated talks with the mystery company last Wednesday and is confident a deal can be struck. He told The Chronicle the move would be

“win-win all round”. The town council and surviving relatives of Reg Barton would need to approve the transfer of the trust deed if a concrete bid is made. Winsford United director Alan Johnson, who had initially hoped to raise more than £500,000 to renovate the current ground, said the alternative proposal “would be far better than we could ever create at the Barton Stadium”. He added: “We’d need to raise far less and there would be a lot more benefits.”

Smokers in fine warning VALE Royal Borough Council is running a campaign to remind people that cigarette butts are litter and should be disposed of correctly. The council’s SMYLE (Supporting My Local Environment) team will be around the borough talking to the public to raise awareness of the consequences if caught littering. Anyone caught dropping anything from cigarette butts to fast-food wrappers will be issued with a fixed penalty notice by PCSOs and could be fined up to £75. Pubs in town centres are being given drip mats, portable ashtrays and posters to help remind smokers that it is a criminal offence to drop litter in the streets. The awareness campaign began on Monday. Remaining dates and venues are: ■ Thursday, January 29 – Winsford Market, 10am-3pm ■ January 30 – Northwich town centre, 10am-3pm. Cllr Lynn Riley, lead councillor for environmental management, said: “Cigarette butts leak toxins that have severe impacts on the environment and they can take more than five years to degrade. It is important that people are responsible and dispose of rubbish correctly.”

Health services meeting SEVENTY people attended a meeting last week to voice their opinion on future health services in Northwich. The Northwich Community Panel, which includes members of SONIC (Save Our Northwich In-patient Campaign), local voluntary groups and patients spent the day looking at exhibitions from potential developers last Tuesday. NHS chiefs announced their intention to upgrade services in Mid Cheshire last year, and said a new community hospital could be built next to Northwich’s Victoria Infirmary. Sue Noyce, project leader for Central and Eastern Cheshire PCT (CECPCT) said: “We have tried to make this developer selection process as open as we possibly can and are very happy that the views of local people and staff will be added to the views of the selection panel.” The final winning concept and developer will be announced next month following the CECPCT board meeting on Tuesday, January 27.

Ex-PC accused of snooping on star AMONG police files allegedly unlawfully accessed by a former Northwich police officer was one relating to footballer Djibril Cisse, a court has heard. The ex-Liverpool player, now at Sunderland, was arrested in January 2006 for a domestic assault at his Frodsham home and a jury was told yesterday that PC Mohammed Ahmed later twice looked at his file without authority. Ahmed, 26, is on trial at Liverpool Crown Court facing seven charges of misconduct in public office. The prosecution claim that he used Cheshire Constabulary computer systems to illegally access details of acquaintances. While based in Northwich, he used the computer to look into details of crimes in his home town of Warrington. His duties did not include that area and he knew the computer contained highly sensitive information and should only be used as required for police or criminal justice work, Neil Fryman, prosecuting, has claimed. When the trial began last week Ahmed, of California Close, Great Sankey, Warrington, faced eight offences of misconduct in 2006 and 2007 but he was cleared of one of the offences on Tuesday after the prosecution offered no further evidence on it. The prosecution ended their case yesterday and Ahmed began giving his evidence – strenuously denying the allegations. The court has heard that he allegedly used the computer systems about 300 times unlawfully and asked about this by his barrister, Trevor Parry-Jones, he replied: “I never thought I was doing wrong.” The case continues.

A MAN has been arrested after being involved in a head-on car crash on Monday night. The 23-year-old was taken into police custody on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of a collision after the accident on Wharton Road, near Wharton Gardens, at 7.10pm. He is due to appear before Vale Royal Magistrates Court on February 19.

THE funeral was held on December 23, 2008 of the late Brian Samuel Capper, who died on December 16, aged 74.

Brian was born in Northwich and was the only child of Sarah (Sadie) and Samuel Capper. He was brought up in Northwich and attended Victoria Road and Rudheath schools. He served in the RAF during National Service, spending eighteen months in Germany near Hanover and then Berlin writing to his future wife every day. He married Joan Harrison of Witton Park in July 1959 in a service conducted by the late Canon Maitland Wood. Settling first very happily in Barnton

they later moved in 1966 to Witton Park to be nearer to both their parents. Brian worked for British Gas as a commercial and technical sales representative covering a wide area of Cheshire including Chester. He was a lover of the countryside and spent a lot of time walking the dogs in Marbury Park. He was Sacristan of Witton Church for many years until early retirement when the disease lupus, rheumatoid and pulmonary fibrosis curtailed his activities 12 years ago. Nonetheless he took up digital photography, watercolour painting, poetry and computing, mainly with Age Concern. He enjoyed holidays in this country and abroad with his wife and family and planned many DIY projects at home, which sadly were very often unfinished because of

Writer inspires pupils

CHILDREN’S poet David Horner visited Crowton Primary School last week to hold poetry workshops and storytelling sessions with the pupils. Youngsters in all years at the Kingsley Road school spent time with the poet – reading, writing and sharing their ideas and work. David worked with the children to create a big book and gave lessons on fine-tuning the alliteration skills of the older pupils. A school spokesman said: “David spent the whole day and worked with all years. It was a fantastic day and the children got to share their work with everyone.”

month. The shows are on Friday, February 6 (7.30pm) and Saturday, February 7 (2.30pm and 7.30pm). Tickets can be purchased by downloading a booking form from www.midcheshirescouting.org.uk, or call Lesley Bithell on 01606 351417.

ICONIC: Lisa O’Hare as Mary Poppins.

NORTHWICH culture group DAN’s first theatre trip of the new year is to see a stunning production of Mary Poppins at the Palace Theatre in Manchester next month. A coach will leave Northwich Memorial Hall at 1pm on February 4, and the entourage will be seeing the matinee performance of the acclaimed Disney/Cameron adaptation of the classic musical. Following a three-and-a-half-year run and over 1,000 performances at the Prince Edward Theatre in London’s West End, the award-winning version is embarking on a major international tour. The title role is played by Lisa O’Hare, who has played Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. She trained as a ballet dancer, and performed in a variety of shows at the Royal Opera House. After moving to musical theatre, Lisa joined the original London production of Mary Poppins in 2006, and took over the lead role last year. Tickets are £35, which includes coach travel. The coach from will also stop to pick up at Hartford and Sandiway churches. To book call Nick Hughes at the DAN Office in Northwich Library on 01606 41597.

THE glorious days of the swing band era are vividly recreated in the hit musical play Blonde Bombshells of 1943 at The Lowry at Salford Quays this week. Alan Plater’s award-winning show is filled with live swing band performances, brimming with 1940s classics by Fats Waller, The Andrews Sisters and Glenn Miller. Blonde Bombshells of 1943 is directed by Mark Babych and features a live band of eight talented actors/musicians including Didsbury actor, Matthew Ganley. The Blonde Bombshells, the most glamorous all-girl swing band in the North, loses members every time it plays a GI camp. Now there’s an important BBC job in the offing and Betty (Charlotte Armer) needs to find new musicians – fast. Among those drafted are naïve schoolgirl Liz (Laura Stevely), who plays a mean clarinet; Miranda (Rosie Jenkins), an upper-crust saxophonist; singing nun Lily (Sarah Whittuck) – and Patrick (Matthew Ganley), a male drummer prepared to don a frock in order to avoid a drafting. Blonde Bombshells of 1943 is on at The Lowry every night until Saturday, January 24. Ring 0870 787 5793 or visit www.thelowry.com.

LET’S SWING AGAIN: Blonde Bombshells of 1943 comes to The Lowry next week.

Right on time to sink Mariners Double salvo sends warning to dogfight rivals WITTON shocked play-off chasing Marine on Saturday and added weight behind manager Gary Finley’s message that the Wincham Park outfit can beat anybody. Saturday’s impressive 2-0 victory at a wind-swept Arriva Stadium signalled to the rest of the UniBond Premier that Albion’s fight for survival is gathering pace. Lee Thompson opened Witton’s account on two minutes, atoning for an earlier miss, with a well-taken strike but despite having the better chances, Finley had to wait until the 90th minute until James Olsen tapped in from close range to seal the points. “We scored at just the right times in the game,” said Finley. “Scoring the second so late on they were never going to come back from that. It was a very good performance.” It wasn’t all plain sailing against the Mariners, though, and due to some missed chances and a shot that hit the bar direct from a free kick, Albion’s travelling support were made to sweat until Olsen’s winner. Finley said: “We should have had the game tied up as we missed three one-on-ones in the first five minutes. “We had the wind and rain with us in the first half and at half-time I was just hoping that we weren’t going to be made to pay for those missed chances. “But we worked ever so hard and got

Beaten battlers impress the boss

FORCED to play away from the Marston’s Arena on Saturday for their ‘home’ clash with Histon, Northwich Vics endured a heartbreaking finish to a dramatic and incident-filled match. Manager Steve King was minutes away from getting his first win since joining the club in November when two late goals stole the points for the visiting Stutes. Matty Crowell had given Vics a 14th-minute lead at Altrincham’s Moss Lane ground, the match having been moved there as former chairman Mike Connett had locked the gates to the Marston’s Arena. But the game turned when Ryan Brown was sent off for a tackle on Lanre Oyebanjo. “It was never a sending off,” fumed King. “It wasn’t even a booking. Everyone in the ground and even their manager said so. “We have had to play for 70 minutes with 10 men and we IN VAIN: Matty Crowell’s strike was not enough couldn’t hold on. for unlucky Vics on Saturday. “We had a chance to go 2-0

up with their keeper out of his goal, but the shot just missed the post. “It was an open goal from 35 yards and that would have killed the game off.” Histon’s Nathaniel Knight Percival headed home a cross to level the scores on 90 minutes and in the seventh minute of added-on time Josh Simpson stole the points. Despite the heartache of losing a game they surely deserved to win, Vics boss King was satisfied with his team’s efforts. “They have given absolutely everything. The supporters tell you how you have played and they stood and clapped us off after the game. “It is testament to those supporters and to the boys for giving everything under the current circumstances. “We are just not getting any luck at the moment.” This Saturday, bottom-ofthe-league Vics make the long journey south to 13th-placed Weymouth (3pm).

WINSFORD United manager Joe Gibiliru was pleased with his team’s efforts despite them going down 2-1 at home to promotion-chasing New Mills. The Blues boss has been angry in recent weeks after performances lacked desire and players looked unfit but Saturday’s game at the Barton Stadium gave him cause for optimism. A 23rd-minute penalty from Darren Connell gave United hope after they had gone 2-0 down in the first 20 minutes but the equaliser, wanted by the majority of the crowd of 110, proved elusive. Gibiliru said: “I don’t mind getting beat when we are having a go and that was the case on Saturday. New Mills were hanging on at the end and were being forced to waste time by the corner flag. The performance was a lot better.” This Saturday, the Blues host Ramsbottom United (3pm) for a league game that presents Winsford with a good chance of getting a much-needed three points. “If we play like we did on Saturday then the Ramsbottom game should be a formality”, said Gibiliru. “But you never know in this league so it’s a must-win game for us as we don’t want to get dragged into a dogfight with the teams below us.” ■ Barnton returned to the bottom of Cheshire League Division One on Saturday after going down narrowly to sixth-placed Curzon Ashton Reserves. Jay Crellin scored Barnton’s only goal of the game at the Tameside Stadium but manager Mick Duckett was happy with his side’s display in the 2-1 defeat. “We’re not rolling over like we used to and defensively we are doing OK,” he said. “We are struggling a little bit up front though so I am trying to use my contacts to bring in someone but it’s tough getting anyone at this time of year due to injuries and suspensions.” This Saturday, Barnton host Stalybridge Celtic Reserves (2.15pm) at their Townfield Lane ground. ■ Lostock Gralam moved up to fourth in Cheshire League Division Two after a cracking 3-2 victory over Tarporley Victoria. Having led 2-0 at half-time through Nadgy Khirat and Gavin Tomlinson, Vics hit back twice. But with five minutes to go Adam Bayley struck the winner to claim all three points for the jubilant Grey Lambs. This Saturday, Lostock travel to league leaders Golborne Sports (2.15pm).

Backs to the fore to shake off Sale Rugby union

NORTHWICH needed extra time to squeeze past lower league opponents and reach the semi-finals of the Cheshire Vase on Saturday. Playing at former Premiership ground Heywood Road, tenants Sale, of Cheshire and South Lancs Division One, proved tough opponents but the Blacks had just enough to progress. Star performer Aussie centre Stacey Hosking made several breaks before converting one into a try, which Matt Bebbington converted. It brought the scores level before half-time as the hosts had taken the lead with a converted try of their own. The second half was scoreless despite some excellent running from substitute Tom Wood and Kiwi fullback Simon Pratt. Going into extra-time, Northwich’s superior backline continued to show their class and another Hosking break set up Pratt for STAR MAN: a well-deStacey Hosking served try under the posts. Bebbington then added to his conversions with a bizarre drop goal attempt that was awarded by the referee despite it clearly dropping under the bar. Sale rallied late on with an unconverted try but it was the visiting Blacks that went through 20-15. First-team manager Bryan Johnson said: “It was a good hard physical game which is what we needed because we have not played for about four weeks or so. “We dominated up front and had one of the four or five scoring passes gone to hand when we made breaks in the backs then it would have been a different scoreline. “We were a bit rusty but it was good to a get a full game under our belts and hopefully we’ll go forward and challenge the top two in the league. “What the result did show is that there is obviously not too much difference between the leagues.” This Saturday Northwich, travel to Broughton Park in North West Two action (2.15pm). Other scores: Sefton 2nds 0 Northwich 2nds 25 (tries: Lee Allmark 2, Chris Heptesinal, Tom Bradfield, Ross Walker).

KICKING ON: James Underhill clears his lines in Northwich Junior Colts’ heavy defeat at Ormskirk. the hosts ran out 44-0 winners. Team manager Ken Houghton said: “We did a lot better against them at home and if we had scored a couple of tries in the first half then it would have been a different game.” The colts host Wirral in the league this weekend before playing them again the following weekend in the Cheshire Cup quarter-finals.

Carl still leads the way Cycling

NORTHWICH’S Carl Ruebotham is provingheisstilloneofthebestcyclists in the country – at the age of 43. The Winnington rider was recently confirmed as the third best British all-rounder in the national rankings for his overall performances in time-trials this season. His times in the 50-mile event, 100-mile race and how many miles he clocked up over a 12-hour marathon race were enough to place him in the top three against competitors of all ages. “It means that I am still beating the young kids too,” said Ruebotham. “But my goal is that I would like to win the title of best British all rounder but we’ll have to see about that.” Ruebotham, who rides for Yorkshire-based Team Swift, sponsored by Middlewich’s British Salt, was ranked as the best all rounder in Yorkshire and Manchester at the Veteran’s level. But alongside team-mates Joel Wieman and Simon Beldon, Team Swift was ranked as the best team in Britain. Ruebotham is still a member of Hartford-based Weaver Valley CC and is keen for cycling enthusiasts to take up the sport at their local club. “The best way to get started is to go down to your club and start to do events and try and get faster and faster,” he said. “Weaver Valley is one of the best clubs in the country and once you start competing against your team-mates you just take it from there.”

Hockey The forward pairing of Dennis Topping and Pete Evans also looked lively with the latter seeing two efforts rebound off the crossbar and then the post. Danny Moores put in a stirling display at full-back and Park continued to threaten even when down to ten as a couple of players spent time in the sin bin. Northop’s major chances came from

ATHLETICS: Vale Royal star Rebecca Craigie has been given a welcome funding boost ahead of this Saturday’s Northern Cross Country Championships at St Helens. The 17-year-old England international received a £150 support grant from the Ron Pickering Memorial Fund in recognition of her recent performances. Trustee Jean Pickering said: “We hope it will help Rebecca make the most of her opportunities within the sport.” Rebecca will be one of a large travelling contingent from Vale Royal at the Northern showcase at Sherdley Park at the weekend.

John’s Sunday best

ANGLING: Last week’s cold snap accounted for Barnton and Frodsham AC’s Wednesday match on Heesoms Pool but John Cheetham kept his cool to take the plaudits on Sunday. The ice had cleared for the final round of the Scott’s Shield Series and Cheetham’s 3-8-2 of skimmers was enough to pip Steve Walker with 1-10-8 of roach and perch and Dave Blears with 1-3-15 of perch, skimmers and a roach. But Walker had the last laugh as he was confirmed overall title winner of the six-round series thanks to a total of 97 points. Mark Emmison was second with 96 while Blears took third with 95.

Winnington game off

RUGBY UNION: Winnington Park’s Cheshire Plate tie with Wilmslow was postponed on Saturday due to the visitors having a rearranged league fixture that took priority. Park’s seconds took on Waterloo 3rds and ran out 29-19 winners with Mark Phoenix (2), Tom Brennan (2) and Terry Jones scoring tries with Chris Jolley kicking two conversions. This Saturday, Park visit Sale in Cheshire and South Lancs One (2.15pm).

GOLF: The Knight’s Grange Veterans Golf Society start their new season on Monday, February 2. New members are welcome, age limits are 55 and over for men and 50 and over for women. Anyone interested in joining is asked to arrive at the Winsford club on February 2.

Shining Sapphires

NETBALL: Northwich Sapphires enjoyed two victories on the bounce last week with both the first and third team running out winners. Charlotte Cawood was the star player as the third team beat Grappenhall 26-16 while Lydia Naylor stole the limelight in the first team’s 39-13 victory over Trafford.

League’s six appeal

Late leveller denies Park much-needed win WINNINGTON Park endured a frustrating start to the new year when they conceded a late equaliser in North Wales. Park, currently second from bottom in Northern League Division Two West, started brightly on Saturday and created chances at eighth-placed Northop Hall. The visitors’ midfield of Julian Buckle, Adam Kueres, Andy Birdsey and Ric Evans looked to assert themselves and made the early running.

set-pieces but John-Paul Dodd was more than a match for anything thrown at him in the Park goal. After the break the visitors from Mid Cheshire finally broke the deadlock when Topping finished well after Pete and Ric Evans saw their shots saved by the keeper. But with just minutes from claiming what would have been a much-needed win, Park could not hold on as Hall worked a routine set-play past the despairing Dodd to make the final score 1-1.

Park seconds claimed a great 2-1 win at Knutsford 2nds with John Stackhouse and Simon Pinson on target. The thirds fell 5-0 at home to Bebington 4ths while the fourths lost 4-2 at Golborne Sports 2nds (Joe Booth, Connor Miller). This Saturday, Park host Northern at Sir John Deane’s (12.30pm), the 2nds host Chester 3rds (2.00), the 3rds travel to Runcorn 2nds while the 4ths are at home to Neston South Wirral 6ths (3.30pm).

GROUNDS FOR CONCERN: Former chairman Mike Connett (left) locked the gates on Northwich Vics’ Marston’s Arena forcing the Blue Square Premier side to play Saturday’s home clash with Histon at nearby Altrincham. Vics owner Jim Rushe (right) hopes he can buy the stadium in a bid to solve the many problems facing the club.

IT’S A LOCKOUT Football

By Ben Coulbeck

NORTHWICH Vics are in limbo after they were locked out of their ground last week.

In a bizarre twist to the ongoing sale saga of their Marston’s Arena base in Wincham, Vics were forced to play their home clash with Histon at Altrincham on Saturday. Former chairman Mike Connett, who still technically owns the stadium despite his Beaconet firm going into administration, locked the gates and removed vital safety equipment. Beaconet faces a winding-up hearing later this month. Club owner Jim Rushe said: “I don’t exactly know what has been taken as I have not been able to get in the ground but according to Trading Standards, he has taken firefighting equipment, fire alarms, CCTV equipment and

This is what happens when you don’t own your own ground, says frustrated Rushe

anything that he is claiming is owned by Beaconet. “He is supposed to be taking the floodlights and the goalposts but he’ll have a problem with that as they were purchased using a grant from the Football Foundation. “It was always going to happen when your landlord has got financial difficulties. This is what happens when you don’t own your own ground.” Rushe said that until the solicitors from each party reach an agreement, the chances of Vics operating out of the Marston’s Arena in the near future look bleak. He said: “Everything is with the solicitors now deciding who’s wrong

and right. The club is in limbo.” A spokesman for Cheshire County Council’s Trading Standards department confirmed that officers had enforced a prohibition order on the ground to prevent spectators viewing a match because of health and safety fears. Just 428 supporters made it in time to Altrincham’s Moss Lane stadium to see Vics’ agonising 2-1 defeat (see page 30) following the last-minute change of plans. Rushe said that it was unlikely Altrincham would be used for home matches again due to the high cost to the club. The Vics owner also confirmed that

his consortium is close to getting together the £1.5m needed to buy the Marston’s Arena. Buying the stadium from Deloitte, the finance company that seized the ground as part of the administration process, would solve many of the problems currently facing Vics. On the field, manager Steve King quickly took advantage of the transfer embargo being lifted last week by signing three players on loan to improve the squad. Karl Murray, 26, has joined Vics from Blue Square South side Bromley, 32-year-old Lee Elam has signed on non-contract terms from Altrincham and unattached David McDonald used to be on Rushden’s books. King said: “By bringing better players into the squad, it will improve the situation.” Bottom-of-the-league Vics travel to 13th-placed Weymouth (3pm) on Saturday followed on Tuesday by a visit to Wrexham (7.45pm).

Striding out with high hopes

IN THE HUNT: Megan Huxley

VALE Royal’s cross country stars are on their marks to take on the best runners from across the north of England this weekend. The Mid Cheshire club’s visit to Sherdley Park, St Helens on Saturday will pit the club’s squads against famous outfits such as Gateshead, Leeds, Sheffield and Sale Harriers. But after years of success at Vale Royal, despite the size of the club, it will be the runners from Mid Cheshire that will be feared. “We are actually considered to be among the big guns at this huge event,”

Athletics said coach Sean McGrath. “It will be very difficult to win anything but over the last four or five years we have medalled so we are hoping to do that again. As to what colour medals, we’ll have to wait and see.” With more than 400 entries expected for each race and about 1,000 athletes due to compete in the senior men’s race, the Northern Cross Country Championships is one of the biggest events of the season.

Medal hopes exist with many of the Vale Royal teams making the short journey to St Helens but two teams in particular will be targeting medal-winning performances. “Our under 15 girls team are reigning silver medallists in the team event and they should be close to the medals. The U17s will also stand a good chance,” added McGrath. ■ To see how Vale Royal’s runners get on at the Championships this weekend, then pick up a copy of your free Chronicle next Wednesday.

WITTON Albion officials are looking forward to the biggest pay day of the UniBond Premier season as FC United of Manchester and their travelling hordes arrive in Northwich on Saturday. The rebel club, formed by disillusioned fans when American business tycoon Malcolm Glazer bought Manchester United in 2005, have an average home crowd of more than 2,000. And with current finances at both Northwich football clubs being at a premium, the arrival of a potential 1,000-plus FC United fans will bring a welcome boost to the Wincham Park coffers. Acting chairman Mark Harris said the club was prepared for the match and would extend a warm welcome to visiting supporters up until kick-off. He said: “We have been working for about three of four weeks in preparation for the visit of FC and we have been liaising with them to ensure their supporters have an enjoyable and safe afternoon. “There will be no segregation on Saturday as we don’t feel that it will be an issue but I have been overwhelmed by our fantastic group of volunteers who have offered to be extra programme sellers and stewards. “Our supporters will be in the minority so they will have to shout that bit louder but if we stick together on and off the pitch, hopefully we can continue to rise up the table.” Witton are on a high at the moment having taken six points from their last two league matches although the visiting Gigg Lane outfit arrive on the back of three straight wins themselves. Manager Gary Finley said his players would relish playing in front of the biggest crowd of the season but, more importantly, he wants three points from the fixture to continue their drive to safety. He said: “The lads will give their all week in week out but these are the games you want to be playing in. When you are playing in front of more than 2,000 fans then you are bound to give that bit extra. “Saturday is all about us trying to turn our home form around. We have gone to some extremely tough places in the league and picked up three points. “But we need to start picking up points at home and that starts on Saturday against FC United.” Kick-off on Saturday is 3pm and admission prices are £9 adults, £5.50 for concessions. The social club will be open to both sets of supporters from noon. ■ See www.midcheshirechronicle.co.uk for a match report of Witton’s clash with FC United.
