Six in court over fake washing powder allegations

FLOODING SHUTDOWN

GO SLOW: Long tail-backs throughout the area resulted from the burst main.

By Dave Goodban ALMOST 1,000 children got an unexpected day off yesterday (Tuesday) when two Northwich schools had their water supply cut off after a main burst.

Rudheath Primary and High Schools sent their pupils home after the huge pipeline burst outside Roberts Bakery at around 6am. And traffic chaos followed around the town when the busy A556 dual carriageway was closed in both directions. Thousands of homes across Davenham, Hartford, Rudheath and Wincham were left without water, and secondary

Roads and schools closed by burst main traffic routes in and out of Northwich were gridlocked. A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said: “The Manchester-bound carriageway was closed at the Gadbrook Park traffic lights, and the Chester-bound carriageway was closed from Davenham roundabout.” She added: “The road is expected to be closed for several hours and motorists are advised to find alternative routes.” The high school, with 650 pupils, and

A GROUP of six men accused of smuggling 25,000 kilograms of counterfeit soap powder into Winsford have appeared in court. The co-defendants, all from Stoke-on-Trent, had the fake powder shipped into Britain from China and stashed in a warehouse on Winsford Industrial Estate, prosecutors claim. It is also alleged they smuggled 2,875 cartons of imitation Persil hidden in the lock-up at the Phoenix Centre on Road One. Michael Baggaley, 23; Justin Campbell, 38; Steven Charlesworth, 45; Daniel Foulkes, 22; Martin Forrester, 37 and a 17-year-old male, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were charged by Cheshire Trading Standards officers. They appeared at Northwich Magistrates Court on Monday afternoon, but did not enter pleas. They were all released on bail and will appear before JPs in Northwich again on July 27. Ian Callister, spokesman for Cheshire West and Chester Council, said: “The defendants have all been jointly charged under the Trade Descriptions Act of possession with intent to supply 25,000 kilos of washing powder and 2,800 imitation Persil boxes. “None of them entered pleas and they were all given unconditional bail. The case was adjourned until July for the case to be committed to the crown court.”

the primary school, which has 276 pupils, closed on health and safety grounds. Both were expected to reopen today, Wednesday. A spokesman for United Utilities, which received around 350 calls throughout the morning, said: “An engineer arrived on site to investigate a reported water main burst less than half an hour after receiving the first call at 6.43am. “Alternative water supply vehicles

were also sent out to help get the water supply back on as soon as possible. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.” The spokesman said water supplies were restored to most of the affected areas, as well as both schools, by around 11am. Supplies to Mere Lane, Wincham, were expected to be restored by 2pm, but the road was still closed when the Chronicle went to press. “Some customers may find water pressure levels are lower than usual,” said the UU spokesman yesterday lunchtime. “Pressure levels will gradually build up to normal during the day following the completion of repairs to the main.”

Design deadline

MOULTON residents have until Wednesday June 24 to give their views to Cheshire West and Chester Council on a draft design statement for the village. The statement aims to manage change to both the landscape and buildings in the village and to give a detailed guide to its character, according to planning officers. It sets out features which make Moulton distinctive, with guidelines on how to encourage development which enhances and complements that which already exists. Details can be seen at Northwich Information Centre and Northwich Library, Witton Street.

Leukaemia survivor, 10, takes Snowdon in his stride

CLIMBER: Ten-year-old Jamie Pritchard with his friends at the end of his sponsored Snowdon climb. HAPPY FAMILY: Jamie, right, with his sister Emma, seven, grandad Les and dad Ian. JK260509CLIMBERS-004 A 10-year-old from Kingsmead who completed his treatment for Leukaemia in September has climbed Snowdon to raise money for research into the disease.

Jamie Pritchard, of Coronet Avenue, took on the challenge on Friday with his dad Ian, grandad Les aged 71 and little sister Emma, seven. The family were joined by 20 other friends and family who also wanted raise money for Leukaemia Research. Jamie was diagnosed with Leukaemia at the age of six in April, 2005, and underwent years of gruelling treatment. On completing his treatment in September 2008 Jamie decided he wanted to begin fundraising He hopes to raise £3,500 in all – £1 for every foot of Snowdon’s height. Les said: “In brilliant sunshine everyone reached the summit and had glorious panoramic views at the top. Jamie’s friends formed a guard of honour as Jamie reached the top.” Jamie told the Chronicle that while he enjoyed the trip, he knows all too well the importance of what he is doing. He said: “Some of the children don’t make it, and do not get through it like me. I just want to help stop this and raise money for the research.” Jamie’s mum, Jo, said it was deeply distressing when Jamie was diagnosed. She said: “We were just in a state of shock when he was diagnosed, we were terrified. “We spent an awful lot of time at hospital. We knew children who had the disease who did not make it through the treatment. “We also saw other parents who were going through the same thing. It was horrendous.” You can still sponsor Jamie by going to www.justgiving.com/jamieswalkers2009 or email him on jamieswalkers@hotmail.com. All money raised will go to Leukaemia Research.

Whatfest winners THE Chronicle has been inundated with responses to our Whatfest 2009 competition, which closed on Friday. We asked which part of Northwich indie favourites The Shallow Call come from, and every single entry gave the correct answer – Rudheath. But there could only be two winners. Sarah Ambrose, 34, of Navigation Road in Northwich and 44-year-old Keith Miller, of Moss Road, Winnington have each won a pair of day tickets to this year’s festival, which is being held at Riverside Organic Farm, Whatcroft, from Friday to Sunday, July 17-19. Around 10,000 people are expected to attend the family-friendly festival, with more than 40 bands taking to two stages.

Angel Range – six friends from Weaverham High School, will share the bill with Radiohead, Kaiser Chiefs and Kings of Leon in August. “We’re so excited, it’s amazing,” said lead singer Liv Westhead, who lives in Hartford.

The indie/rock outfit, all aged 15 and 16, initially won a regional ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition at the Pillar of Salt at Leftwich. SICK notes are being scrapped and replaced with a new medical ‘fit note’ to help more people stay in work. The move, which has been developed with the support of healthcare professionals and employer representatives, will be rolled out across Chester West and Chester in the spring of 2010. The ‘fit note’ will enable people to get the best possible advice about staying in work, and what their employer can do to help them if they are unable to. There are currently 12,740 people in Cheshire West and Chester on Incapacity Benefit. Although this has reduced by 1,870 over the last five years the Government says more needs to be done. Under the new system computer-generated ‘fit notes’ available in GP surgeries will replace traditional handwritten sick notes. The introduction of the ‘fit note’ forms part of the Government’s response to Dame Carol Black’s groundbreaking report into the health of Britain’s working age population, which was published in March 2008.

Regional roots can’t be torn up JUSTWilliam The musings of a middle-aged man from Middle England DOES anyone remember Rutland? It used to be the smallest county in England when I was a lad and Yorkshire, of course, was the largest. Yorkshire had three ‘Ridings’, whatever they were. All I know is they divided the county into three parts. I have never been sure which one of the compass directions was left out. I think there was a North Riding and an East Riding and possibly a West Riding. They probably left out South as most Yorkshire folk don’t like anyone from the south. I liked the old counties. These new ones don’t have the same ring to them. Humberside, Merseyside, Tameside and the like are just areas made up by bored politicians. I cannot remember anyone moaning about how the old counties were run. Mind you, I cannot remember anyone complaining much when they disappeared either. Why do we allow minorities to make decisions for us? I don’t know anyone who wanted Cheshire split in two. But, then again, I don’t know many politicians, and they seemed to be madly keen on it (the ones in Westminster anyway). Even then it was the politicians who don’t live in our county who made the decision, for our own good you understand. Well, I have one small query. When I lived in Cheshire my MP’s constituency was in Cheshire. Not so now. Rudheath is in West Cheshire, Tatton is mainly in East Cheshire. If that makes sense then so does having Christmas at Easter! I wonder what my MP will do if there is a problem between the two counties and that problem is between Knutsford and Rudheath. Will he side with Rudheath, West Cheshire, or Knutsford, East Cheshire? Politicians can do what they like and move boundaries and change laws – what they cannot do is change our identities. A person from Liverpool is like a person from Manchester, a Lancastrian through and through. Warrington and Widnes may be officially in Cheshire but tell that to a person from either place. Try telling a man from Hull he’s not a Yorkshireman. If you do, don’t forget to duck! And as for me, I’m from Cheshire and proud of it.

BNP relies on scare tactics

LAST week my sister was unexpectedly admitted to hospital. Before I went to visit I was a little apprehensive as I had just read a BNP election leaflet in which an unnamed doctor referred to the damage being done to the NHS by immigration. I half expected to find my sister in a dilapidated old building in a ward full of ‘bogus asylum seekers’ or with some of the ‘80 million Muslim Turks’ who are about to ‘swamp Britain’. What if she had been pushed to the back of the queue and couldn’t actually find a bed? I needn’t have worried. The ward she was in was in a bright, new, modern, clean building, and I found her relaxing in the patients lounge. She was being well looked after and receiving excellent care. However, I did notice one foreign-looking lady – it turned out was actually one of the doctors. Unfortunately, I couldn’t tell if she was one of those Muslims that the BNP leaflet specifically targeted. I know some people do have concerns about immigration but I find it very worrying to see the BNP using spurious claims about the NHS to stir up feeling against immigrants. I also feel sorry for the dedicated and caring staff of the NHS being used for this type of propaganda. Unlike the unnamed doctor in the BNP leaflet, please be sure to print my name and address as I think that unsigned statements are always a bit dubious. JOHN JORDAN School Lane, Lostock Gralam

Money men – look at Witton!

SOMEONE said to me the other day that Witton FC had no room to talk about Vics as we had had a CVA (company voluntary arrangement) against us in the past. There is a big difference I must point out. Vics have been in administration twice in the last five years and when Witton were they paid their debt in full. Naive, but honest. Vics have once again failed to pay their debts. So if you are a local businessman I suggest you put your money into a club that WILL pay you what it owes and not leave you in the lurch. ALAN LOWE Melchett Crescent, Rudheath

Scrap second home and put MP in hotel MY wife and I recently enjoyed a recent short break in London, staying at a very nice three-star hotel in Bayswater by Hyde Park. There was access to Westminster from two nearby tube stations (about 10 minutes away). The tariff – £60 for a double room – included an excellent full English breakfast or healthy or continental options. And the manager indicated a further reduction could likely be negotiated for regular stays.

EXPENSES CHANGE: One reader believes putting MPs such as Mike Hall up in hotels in London would cost far less than what they claim for second home allowances.

Great service

I RECENTLY used the hospital visitor service to visit a relative in Leighton Hospital. The service was wonderful. I was collected from my front door by a very pleasant driver and taken home again later, and I didn’t have the hassle of finding a parking space! I would recommend this service to anyone. On booking I was told it is free to bus pass holders and blue badge holders. The number is 01606 784100. SATISFIED PASSENGER

Delamere Loopy

FOLLOWING the launch of the Delamere Loop bridleway, my partner and I decided to cycle the route before attempting it on horseback. We joined the loop at Primrose Wood in Utkinton and followed the signs. There were plenty of direction indicators through the wood, however, once we entered Delamere Forest the signs seemed to disappear. At junctions in the forest where the only option was to turn right or left there was a complete absence, leaving much to luck and a good sense of direction. Having made our way

through the forest, we picked up another sign directing us up Eddisbury Hill. After a strenuous climb, we reached the summit and could not find another sign. At this point we gave up and cycled back to Utkinton feeling quite disappointed. Our intention had been to check the route out in order that we can arrange a sponsored horse and cycle ride in aid of St Luke’s Hospice. However, until the route is clearly and regularly marked this will be an impossibility. I hope that this situation may be rectified quickly in order that the opening of this long-awaited bridleway may boost tourism in the way it has been anticipated. 1946 floods

I HAVE been approached by a colleague whose friend lives in Australia to try and locate a picture relating to the old Regal Cinema. The picture in question is the mural which was painted on the wall opposite the payboxes indicating the level of the floodwater. If any reader can help it would be much appreciated,

Parliament sits for just 128 days, so think of the savings to the taxpayers (us!) if our MP Mike Hall, who claimed a second home allowance of £23,067 last year, were to use an hotel (cost £7,680). Why should we pay for his second home mortgage interest (£11,280 pa), council tax (£1,200), gas, electricity, water (presumably unlimited), service, insurance, maintenance, cleaning, household sundries and so on? The money claimed for laundry, ironing and dry cleaning would be reduced as bedding and towels are provided by the hotel. In addition, the average £3,300 pa food claim should be cut significantly due to hotel breakfast and heavily subsidised catering in Parliament. If Mr Hall insists on clinging on to his taxpayer-funded property then, alternatively, I suggest Weaver Vale constituents should be able to pre-book the accommodation, paying a nominal amount for cleaning and laundry, for Friday-Sunday weekend breaks and any of the many weeks when our MP is on holiday. After all – we’re paying for it! JON NELSON Weaverham

Attack on EU

FAR from being an exercise in democracy, the European Parliament elections actually distract attention from how much the EU affects our lives. Britain’s most costly legislation, on dictating working hours, was forced through under a convenient measure where we had no veto. Under the European arrest warrant, Britons can be dragged abroad without any evidence of wrongdoing and held for months without trial. The EU has shown its antidemocracy credentials by refusing to accept the result of last year’s Irish referendum, seeking only to increase its own powers. The good news is that, with world trade barriers coming down over the years, we don’t actually need to be in the EU to trade with it. So the real issue is not whom we elect to its talking shop Parliament, but putting power back in the hands of a

Government we can actually hold accountable. MARK TAYLOR New Alliance, Via email

Safety first?

THERE is nothing wrong with the markings on the roundabout at the bottom of Wharton Hill in Winsford (Chronicle, May 27). The problem is the morons who don’t know how to drive properly! For £25,000 I can suggest quite a few other things that are far more important and more serious with regards to safety than that roundabout. ‘SAFE DRIVER’ Nixon Drive, Winsford

Decoy homes stop break-ins DECOY houses are being used by county police in a crackdown on burglars in West Cheshire. The scheme has already been a success, with one Chester thief being dealt with at court. Working with Chester & District Housing Trust, Cheshire Constabulary’s Western Area officers kitted out a flat in Stamford Road, Blacon, with cameras and SmartWater, a liquid which marks property and offenders, linking them to a crime scene. Although the Cheshire force has used decoy cars successfully before, this is the first time they have used decoy houses. Martin Joseph Luke Whelan, 43, of Norris Road, Blacon, appeared at Chester, Ellesmere Port & Neston Magistrates’ Court on May 22 this year. He pleaded guilty to burglary and the theft of a mountain bike, tool box, a lamp and copper wiring from the flat.

Whelan received a 15 week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. He was caught when a canister of SmartWater placed inside the tool box went off, spraying out the liquid. SmartWater is a forensically-coded liquid and like DNA, each batch produced is unique. The substance is invisible to the naked eye but can be easily identified by officers with ultraviolet light. SmartWater also remains on skin, hair and clothing for several weeks or months and will not wash off. Detective Sergeant Simon Owen of the Western Area Proactive Policing Team said: “This is something that has not been done in Cheshire before. “But we do have more of these properties across the Western Area of the county and will continue to work in this way to catch suspected burglars. “We want to warn potential thieves that any house they break into could be marked with SmartWater.”

A GANG of four who allegedly posed as police officers to burgle the elderly appeared at Chester Crown Court on Wednesday last week. Wrexham quartet Jerry Berry, 23; Elisha Jones, 23; Leon Lavell, 19 and a 15-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, are accused of a spree of distraction burglaries across rural Cheshire. On May 5 they are alleged to have targeted pensioners living at Glebe Road, Cuddington; Towers Lane, Frodsham; Alvanley Road, Helsby, and Chapel Lane, Kingsley. Berry is also charged with two further offences. The four are scheduled to reappear at Chester Crown Court to enter pleas on August 10.

NORLEY Primary School pupils and staff are celebrating success in two inspections. The school, on Hough Lane, was rated good or excellent in all categories by Ofsted and inspectors from the Statutory Inspection of Anglican Schools (SIAS) team. Headteacher Ann Griffiths said: “It is wonderful to see what we feel is so special and unique about the school being validated.

NORLEY PRIMARY By Jo Henwood “The reports said some wonderful things about the children, commenting on their impeccable behaviour and positive attitudes to learning, as well as their high standards of achievement.” The Ofsted report also commented on how good the school

is in developing artistic and music skills and the “family atmosphere”. Mrs Griffiths added: “The church inspector made particular mention of our ‘caring harmonious community atmosphere’. “Thanks must go to all the hard work of staff, parents, carers, governors, the parish and the wider community for helping us to achieve this.” Norley Primary School is in a

‘federation’ with Kingsley St John CE Primary School – which means they share a governing body and a headteacher. But the Ofsted report states that Ann Griffiths, “despite dividing her time between the two schools, is highly influential in maintaining a most positive ethos, in seeking further improvements in pupils’ achievements and in the quality of provision”.

It is being held at the village football field next Saturday, June 13, to raise money for Northwich charity The Joshua Tree. Jo said: “Everyone is welcome on the day, when there will be a mini fun fair and activity tent for children.

“The beer tent is open from noon with a barbecue running all day and live music from mid afternoon.” The Joshua Tree was set up by Lynda and David Hill after their son Joshua was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2004. The axemen cometh to Cheshire Show

SOME of the UK’s best axe men will be chopping the competition down to size when they demonstrate the sport of wood chopping at the Cheshire County Show.

The show is welcoming members of the Welsh-based Gwynedd Axe Team when it makes its debut performance at the Countryside Experience arena, on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 23 and 24. The six-man team will be armed with axes, two-man saws and chain saws as they compete in speed competitions and demonstrations of precision wood carving. They will be demonstrating the specialised sport of competitive wood chopping brought to the UK by loggers and bushmen from Australia and New Zealand.

Among the team will be Dafydd Cadwaladr, 13 times British champion and winner of 30 Welsh national titles. He also reached fifth place in the World Championships.

“People love our shows because there are no gimmicks, just brute strength and power. Our members use the displays as training for the national championships so they go all out to win. Spectators can see that and get very involved,” said Dafydd. The axe men will be doing two displays each day at the Tabley Showground. Executive director of the Cheshire County Show Nigel Evans said: “Competitive wood chopping is an exciting and exhilarating event and a great spectator sport. This is exactly the sort of activity we want to see in the Countryside Experience arena.” Advanced tickets are available by calling 0845 124 98 22 or for details visit www.cheshirecountyshow.org.uk. Tickets are also available on the gate for both days.

Cavemen on trial with Mark STAND-up comedian and actor Mark Little (best known for playing Joe Mangel in Neighbours) has returned to his critically acclaimed role in the Olivier Award-winning production Defending the Caveman. Directed by Cathy Farr, its recent London run at the Leicester Square Theatre extended its run for six weeks due to popular demand. Created and performed by Rob Becker in San Francisco in 1991, the show, which was awarded the honour when Mark took on the role at the Apollo Theatre in 2000, is the longest running solo play in Broadway history. Having been translated into 16 languages, Caveman has become a worldwide hit, performing to more than five million people globally in Germany, Slovenia, Belgium, France, Russia, Australia and South Africa. Next year it will be seen in Argentina and Brazil. With hysterical observations into contemporary feminism, masculine sensitivity and the erogenous zones, Defending the Caveman has both sexes roaring with laughter and recognition. ■ The show comes to the Crewe Lyceum from June 4-6. For details, ring the box office on 01270 537333.

BBC Phil concert tributes to Haydn the Innovator THE BBC Philharmonic’s fourconcert tribute to Haydn will bring Manchester’s Haydn the Innovator festival to a thrilling close. The performances are part of the orchestra’s exploration of Haydn’s music this year, during which it will perform 19 of the symphonies and many of his

other choral works, making its survey one of the most extensive undertaken by a UK orchestra in this Haydn anniversary year. The orchestra is performing eight Haydn symphonies over two concerts – held tonight (Wednesday) and on Saturday. It will be joined by the BBC Singers and international so-

loists Kate Royal, Elizabeth Watts, Diana Moore, Andrew Kennedy and Neal Davies for the final two concerts. On Thursday, June 11, Noseda will conduct a programme of choral works, including The Storm, in which Haydn set his first English text, and the tragic Scena di Berenice.

The festival reaches its climax on Saturday, June 13, with one of the great works of the choral repertoire, Haydn’s Creation. Tonight’s concert will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 from the Bridgewater Hall. ■ Tickets can be booked at www.bridgewater-hall.co.uk or by calling 0161 907 9000.

Pack in town

HEAD-LINERS: Achtung Baby visit the Limelight club in Hightown, Crewe on Friday night. LEADING U2 tribute act Achtung Baby claim to be Even Better Than The Real Thing – but you can judge for yourself on Friday. Because the talented four-piece, formed in 1993, are making a welcome return to the Limelight club in Crewe. They have had to keep their wits about them as the original band continue to change their image and push their sound with every new album.

Achtung Baby re-create all the Irish legends’ greatest hits such as Beautiful Day, One, Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, Vertigo and With or Without You. The role of lead singer Bono is played by Andy Bagnell who, in 1995, made it to the live final of ITV’s Stars In Their Eyes. The band even have the backing of their idols. In an exclusive interview with MTV, Bono was asked how he felt about the tribute band. He said:

“I’m quite flattered by what they do.” The band has toured all over the world, taking in the sights of Bahrain, Belgium, Portugal and Holland to name a few. Ranking among their greatest achievements, however, is their appearance in Dublin supporting Aslan, where they played to a crowd of more than 8,000. ■ Doors open at 8.30pm. For tickets, priced £9, phone the box office on 01270 251929.

THERE are still a handful of tickets left for a Rat Pack Vegas Spectacular which hits the stage in Northwich this weekend. The Rat Pack Trio’s acclaimed tribute to the ‘purveyors of cool’ – Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jnr – arrives at the Memorial Hall on Sunday night. The show features the best songs by the ‘greatest musicians of the 20th Century’, and every song is a classic. Come Fly with Me, KINGS: The Rat Volare, Under My Pack Trio. Skin, Mr Bojangles, Lady Is A Tramp, Mack The Knife and many more favourites will be performed. The show has been successful throughout Europe and the USA. For more information visit the award-winning website www.ratpack.biz. ■ Tickets, priced £15, can be bought from Northwich Memorial Hall, or bought over the phone on 01606 867539.

Also it has carved something of a niche for itself in compact SUVs because the arrival of the 2.4 three-door gives Suzuki a unique offering in the SUV market, with no other manufacturer currently offering this engine/body style combination. The balancer shafts used in the engine give Grand Vitara a much more smooth running power unit and it is this that gives the vehicle a much better market pull.

Ian Johnson

TWENTY years ago the world witnessed the birth of a vehicle that would bring the world of off-roading to the driveways of many who would not otherwise be able to afford it.

Suzuki which was already in the business with the utilitarian SJ and LJ, upped the ante and introduced the Vitara, a more comfortable take on lightweight 4x4 driving and the UK took to the vehicle instantly. This was no cosmetic pretender to off-roading because many training schools immediately recognised that the lightweight Vitara had capability. THE more gadgetry there is on a car, the more there is to go wrong so they say. And the ring of truth in these words is echoed this week by Mondial Assistance, which states that electrical faults top UK motor warranty claims. It appears that glitches with electronic gizmos are causing eight out of 10 warranty claims being made on modern cars. Although technology marches on and you have to accept it, is now quite plain that electrical items are the big worry with mechanical failures being far less prevalent. Some of the things that can go wrong include i-Pod connectors, rear seat entertainment systems and parking assist technology. That old favourite, air conditioning, that used to go on an expensive wobble is now far less likely to fail as systems have evolved and become more efficient and less likely to develop faults. Other items likely to cause trouble include coolant temperature senders, brake light switches, exhaust emissions monitors and a host of other minor items you may not know are even there until they pack up. It all goes to prove that technology may be developing at an amazing rate but the gremlins that plague our everyday driving are still there grinning at us. Ian Johnson

ROUNDUp

TOP MAN: Weaver Valley CC star Alan Kemp (centre).

Kemp is king at last

CYCLING: Weaver Valley veteran Alan Kemp was king of the hill once again as he rode to victory at the weekend in the Criterium National Championships at Redbridge, Essex. Undertaking the three-lap hilly circuit in 25ºC, Kemp conquered all in the 50-strong field of over 60s. Kemp won the race, and the overall title, after outsprinting his opponents on the tough hill sections. Clubmate Dave Astles finished in 23rd position. Club spokesman Astles said: “This win was special, as last year Kemp suffered the disappointment of being unable to finish his race due to illness, this championship win is Kemp’s ninth of the season”.

Archer times it right

ATHLETICS: Nicky Archer continued to impress in America when she claimed a top-ten finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. The former Weaverham High School pupil, studying at the University of New Mexico, was eighth in the 5,000m at Norman, Oklahoma. She set a career-best time of 16 mins 40.31 seconds and is now in with a chance of being selected for the 10,000m when the National Championships squads are announced. Vale Royal star Archer is running for the New Mexico Lobos while she studies for a masters in Sports Administration.

Livingston’s Open dream

GOLF: An amateur member of Vale Royal Abbey Golf Club will be playing in the qualifying competition for this year’s Open Championship at Turnberry. Gordon Livingston, 41, recently won the Whitegate club’s championship and also, alongside partner Ian Brandon, earned glory in Egypt, as featured in the Chronicle, when they lifted the Daily Telegraph Match Play title at Taba Heights. Although qualification for the Open will be tough, Livingston is hoping friends and fellow members will be sponsoring him for every par and birdie made. Proceeds will be donated to St Luke’s Hospice in Winsford.

Cheshire knocked out

CRICKET: Cheshire bowed out of the Minor Counties Cup despite defeating Bedfordshire at Marple on Sunday. They begin their Minor Counties Championship campaign this Sunday against Cornwall at Falmouth (11am). ■ Oulton Park have spent £7,000 on a handsome new set of covers, after receiving a grant of £9,500 through Awards For All. They have sold their old covers to Meller Braggins League neighbours Winsford. ■ Cheshire Cup Third Round: Oulton Park v Bowdon Vale, Middlewich v Weaverham, Northwich v Macclesfield.

Comet clash on Flash

SAILING: Winsford Flash members took to their home waters on Saturday in the Comet Open. In the first race Mark Coppenhall from Hunts sailing club pulled out a good lead and held it to the finish with Steve Bellamy from WF second and Dave Jobling from South Staffs third. Steve Bellamy started the second race with a comfortable lead but was overtaken by Mark Coppenhall in the finishing marks. Dave Harrison from WF was third. In the last race Coppenhall had a shaky start but again won the race. WF’s Bellamy and Harrison finished second and third overall.

Leech racks up runs but Oulton draw OULTON Park skipper Nathan Dumelow was disappointed after his side failed to turn over Nantwich at Little Budworth on Saturday. Despite the visiting Dabbers posting an imposing total of 297-6 declared, Park were confident of completing what would have been their fourth victory in the Cheshire County League Premier Division. Batting first, the Dabbers found the boundary on regular occasion with Dumelow setting the standard for the Pinfold Lane bowlers taking 3-50.

In reply, Park looked dead and buried on 41-6 but another magnificent knock from left-handed ex-Winnington Park star Danny Leech (90) helped secure a losing draw, finishing up on 153-6. Dumelow said: “Five an over at Oulton Park, we should really be getting that. We were confident of chasing it before the innings but we just didn’t bat very well. “For the second week running we have come up against a team with an excellent bowling attack and I felt that there were a couple of poor decisions.

“Leechy was once again unbelievable. He just doesn’t look like he is going to get out.” ■ In Division Two, Oakmere were disappointed not to continue their recent upturn in form as they fell to a seven-wicket defeat at Stockport Georgians. Batting first, the Overdale Lane outfit totalled a competitive 185 with Pete Hutchinson hitting a half century. But in reply, the fourth-placed Georgians were too good and won with 186-3.

Park win at last as Welch returns Cricket

WINNINGTON Park finally got in the winning act with a comprehensive victory over Mere at the Recreation Ground on Saturday.

Taking to the field, Park gave themselves a chance and restricted their visitors to 138 (Brian Shingler 2-15, Craig Walsh 2-29). With last week’s derby humiliation at the back of their minds, a determined Park romped to their first Meller Braggins League Division One victory as Jonny Wales hit an unbeaten 70 and returning Neil Welch smacked 45 not out. Acting skipper Shingler said: “Last week I said we needed to take responsibility for our own games and that is exactly what we did, every single player gave 100% and the standard was very high and we thoroughly deserved our win. “Having Neil Welch in the side was a big boost and he certainly proved there are very few batsman better than him.” Rivals Northwich continued their fine league form with a comfortable win at Trafford MV. Martyn East hit 59 as they declared on 187-7 before the Moss Farm outfit skittled out their hosts for 111 for a maximum-points win. Also in Division One, Davenham, who posted 174, took 14 points despite falling to defeat at the hands of Congleton (180-7). In Division Two, Barnton

DELIGHTED: Winnington’s acting skipper Brian Shingler sends another delivery down at home to Mere on Saturday. TMCGL290509park-002 continued their impressive form with a fine win over Bowdon Vale. The Broomsedge side restricted Vale to 122 (Kedar Dhopate 3-37, James Morgan 3-24) before sealing victory on 123-6 (Ben Wingfield 50no, Paul Coot 25). Weaverham also enjoyed their day in the sunshine as they destroyed Alderley Park. Barry Crellin (3-6) and Jamie

Allen (3-10) were the Russetts’ main beneficiaries as Park slumped to just 50 all out. In reply Dave Ashley smashed an unbeaten 42 in their total of 51-0. In Greater Manchester, Winsford had a tough day but escaped from Stockport with a creditable draw. Asked to field, James Tierney (3-54), Mike Clarke (2-51) and

Chris Brandon (2-36) fought hard as Stockport made 245-9. In reply, Clarke (63) was Winsford’s star but despite a valiant effort they settled on 182-7. In the Cheshire Alliance, Hartford slipped up at Grange Park as their total of 108 (Rob Whittle 27) was surpassed by visiting Wilmslow Wayfarers on 110-7 (Whittle 3-23).

Grey Lambs celebrate their new beginning

WORK has finally started on Lostock Gralam’s £450,000 project to develop their Manchester Road ground. After seven years’ fundraising, construction of the Grey Lambs’ new changing facilities and social area along with extensive work to the playing surface and additional junior pitch can begin. Funds have come from a variety of

Football

sources: Vale Royal Borough Council, the Football Foundation and Veolia Landfill Trust as well as the club’s own fundraising initiatives. The project will be managed by local regeneration charity Groundwork Trust. Club secretary James Birdsey said: “This is the culmination of a lot of

hard work from the club’s committee to see the project through to this stage, and it is really exciting to finally see the work beginning to unfold. “On the pitch we had our most successful season for decades, and we are looking to the future now in terms of building a junior set up that will do justice to the facilities we will have.” Lostock are launching their Junior

Academy for under 8s on Saturday, June 20 from 10.30am-12pm at Wincham Primary School. The sessions will be led by club manager Neil Bithell, a coach at Manchester United’s Junior Academy. Behan pleased to claim top-six place Motorsport

The 17-year-old race ace from Barnton finished sixth in the fourth round of the Relentless British Superbikes 125GP Championship at Thruxton and is now placed ninth overall. At a sun-drenched Thruxton, Behan, having qualified second on the grid, Behan got off to a good start but by lap 11 had slipped back to ninth. As the race drew towards its end a mini-battle between Behan and team-mates Rob Guiver and Lee Costello but it was the Northwich youngster that finished on top, taking the chequered flag in sixth place. “It was a good weekend, I got my best qualifying position, due to the fact I got a clear run on track, nothing got in my way,” said Behan. “As for the race, it’s a fast track and a difficult one to pass on. I was passing on the corners, then getting passed on the straights, it’s very frustrating. Through the speed trap in sector one, I was over 5mph down on the fastest rider and 22nd fastest overall, so getting sixth place, I should be pleased with.” Behan now has a three-week wait until the Championships pull into Thetford-based Snetterton circuit for the fifth round. Highlights of this weekend’s race at Thruxton can be seen tomorrow night at 8.30pm on British Eurosport 2.

MATT HAS THE GOLDEN TOUCH Rowing

By Ben Coulbeck

MATT Langridge struck gold for Great Britain once again at the World Cup Regatta in Spain.

The Northwich Rowing Club star was in the stroke seat in team GB’s men’s four crew that crossed the line in first place in Sunday’s final at Banyoles. Their awesome display was just one of nine gold-medal winning performances from British rowers at what was the first World Cup of the season. Team GB also confirmed that it was their biggest medal tally in World Cup history which would have pleased performance director Jurgen Grobler, who recently criticised the lack of strength and depth in his squads. Speaking exclusively to the Chronicle, Langridge said: “It was a definitely a good start for us, the first one is always a bit nerve racking because you don’t really know how you are going to compare to the other fours. “The Czech Republic are a quick crew but we know that there will be quicker crews to come and that is when we will be really tested.

Picture by Peter Spurrier of GB Rowing. ”We’ll know then just how good we are. “We could have gone quicker but you can only race what’s against you so we’ve just got to keep it going and get the job done.” Langridge was joined in the winning boat by Alex Gregory and fellow Beijing Olympic Games silver medallists Alex Partridge and Ric Egington, from Knutsford. Their time of six minutes six seconds was too good for rival

crews Czech Republic and Greece, who took second and third respectively over the 2,000m course. “The plan is for us all to stick together now,” added Langridge. “As we know each other we are not afraid of saying how we think things should be done but it’s coming together nicely and unless there is an injury or Jurgen wants to change things, then the plan is for us to stick as the four.”

Langridge was cheered on by fans on the riverbank but also by his friends and former clubmates at Northwich Rowing Club who were delighted by the former Hartford High School pupil’s latest triumph. Northwich chairman Simon Bannister said: “He is the star of the show for us at the club. “He’s a very busy man as you can imagine but when he does get five minutes he does pop down to see us. “It’s great not just for the

sport but for the kids in our town that they can see someone who has come from grass roots level and is achieving success on the world stage. It’s a great motivator.” Langridge, as part of the fantastic four, will be hoping for more of the same when Team GB arrive in Germany later this month. The second World Cup Regatta of the season at Munich starts on June 19.

Cheshire are champions at Twickenham again Rugby union

CHESHIRE lifted the County Championship Shield in glorious sunshine after staging a dramatic second-half fightback at Twickenham on Saturday. Making their second appearance at rugby’s HQ in four seasons, Cheshire faced Hertfordshire in the showcase final after winning all of their three group games. Hoping to replicate their 2006 success and backed by a couple of hundred supporters who made the long journey for the 10am kick off, Cheshire started in the worst possible manner. Two tries and a penalty left them with a mountain to climb, and despite some late pressure of the Hertfordshire line, Cheshire trailed 15-0 at half-time. A Gavin Roberts penalty early into the second period restored some belief in the travelling support and soon Cheshire had drawn level thanks to a

Ledwards completes the Blues brigade Football THE wind of change continues to blow through the Barton Stadium as Winsford United revealed the third and final member of their new-look management team. Tony Ledwards arrived in Mid Cheshire last week after parting company with UniBond Premier side Nantwich Town. Ledwards, who steered the Dabbers’ youth team to the third round of the FA Youth Cup last season only to lose out to Everton, will take on the majority of the Blues’ coaching duties for the 2009/10 season. He joins new manager Terry Murphy and assistant Mike Alcock as chairman Mike Loveless oversees a summer clearout at Winsford. Ledwards is expected to bring many of his exciting young players with him from Nantwich and Blues secretary Bob Astles told the Chronicle that the UniBond side will not be able to pick and choose players throughout the season. “Once they sign for us then they will know where their loyalties lie,” he said. “Nantwich won’t just be allowed to come and pick players and put them on the bench, that just won’t happen. “Tony has met now with Terry Murphy and Mike Alcock and they all got on very well. They are looking forward to working together and taking the club in a new direction – bringing young players through as well as developing the best local senior players.” Since the change of management at the club, Winsford have been inundated with requests from players to join the club as they begin preparations for another season in the Vodkat Premier League. The Blues narrowly escaped relegation last season but Astles said that has not put off any prospective arrivals. He said: “I have been surprised by how many players want to come and play for us even though the budget next year will not be fantastic. “Many of them know about Terry and Mike and now Tony and they want to come and get involved with what is happening. It’s all very positive.”

Another Roberts penalty nudged Cheshire into the lead before Northwich-based full back Ben Coulbeck scored in the corner to make it 23-15 with 18 minutes to go. Coulbeck’s Manchester clubmate Patrick Leach capped a fine display at inside centre and completed a memorable fightback with a try. A shellshocked Hertforshire earned

a consolation try late on but it was Cheshire who ended the day in triumph with the final score at 30-22. After the whistle, Coulbeck, 26, said: “In many ways that was more satisfying than 2006. To show such character and come back from 15-0 down is a great credit to everyone associated with the county this season. “To be fair, Hertfordshire gave us an almighty scare but in the end the talent of this young squad shone through. “To get on the scoresheet was a

dream come true. It was only from a couple of yards out but they all count. It’s my first at Twickers so I’ll always remember it. “It’s been a great season and the management, coaches, players and supporters deserved their day in the sun and to sink a few beers.” After their success, Cheshire are promoted back to the county’s elite and will contest the Bill Beaumont Cup against old enemies Lancashire and Yorkshire next season.
