£14,948 That’s how much of YOUR money MP spent on cleaning and laundry By Dave Goodban

CLAIM CULTURE: Weaver Vale MP Mike Hall charged a total of £228,646 in expenses for the financial year 2007/08.

‘SQUEAKY clean’ Weaver Vale MP Mike Hall has hit back at critics after it was revealed he splashed out almost £15,000 of taxpayers’ money on laundry and cleaning.

The Labour representative claimed £14,948 over three years for cleaning his second home in Kennington and for his clothes to be laundered and ironed, according to a Sunday Telegraph exposé. In 2005/06 Mr Hall, dubbed “the cleanest MP in Westminster”, claimed £5,194 towards his cleaning bills. The figure fell to £4,346 in 2006/07 before rising to £5,408 last year. He claimed between £100-£200 every month on ‘cleaning’, and a further £110 a month on dry cleaning, laundry and ironing. He also submitted monthly claims for up to £250 for ‘household sundries’ such as toilet tissue, air fresheners and bin bags. Mr Hall, who is paid an annual salary of £60,675, did not need any proof of his expenditure as only claims above £250, other than for food, had to be backed by an invoice or receipt.

Hall retorts: ‘I offer an excellent service’ As well as his cleaning expenditure, he claimed: ■ Almost £10,000 on “proactive work” including holding tea and coffee mornings throughout his constituency. ■ About £7,000 on post and official stationery. ■ Between £240 and £310 a month for food. ■ A repair bill of £620 to fix a “dangerous and hazardous” back step in the back yard of his second home. Mr Hall, 56, claimed a total of £228,646 for the financial year 2007/08. This week he told the Chronicle: “I fully understand the anger and concern about claims made by MPs. I take my responsibilities very seriously and offer an excellent service to constituents.” ■ Chronicle readers have this week expressed their fury over Mr Hall’s claims – with one calling for his resignation and another suggesting his wife Lesley, who he employs as his office manager at an undisclosed salary, should save public money by using a washing machine and ironing board!

COST CUTTER: Cllr Mike Jones, leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council.

COUNCIL leader Mike Jones says the new Cheshire West authority won’t be supporting twinning with foreign towns because it is simply amounts to ‘cheap and free holidays for councillors’. Cllr Mike Jones (Con, Broxton) has incurred the wrath of twinning enthusiasts who are threatening to launch a campaign. They claim twinning leads to social and economic benefits. But Cllr Jones, who visited twin towns when Lord Mayor of Chester, said managing the arrangements used to cost council tax payers more than £70,000 a year for Chester and about £20,000 for Ellesmere Port. He said: “Councillors like to have cheap and free holidays and I don’t think it’s morally correct to be supporting that level of expenditure when reorganising a council with £30m to save and making staff redundant.” Cllr Jones said legally speaking the relationship between, for example, Chester with Sens in France and Ellesmere Port with Reutlingen in Germany ended with the demise of the former councils for those areas. He wants his authority to follow the lead of the former Vale Royal Council, which encouraged people in the community to finance cultural exchanges themselves.

Anger over attack on twinning groups

Cllr Jones, who insists he is in favour of international links, said spending priorities should be on basic issues like school. he said there is “no evidence” twinning led to economic spin-offs. “Various councillors go off on their jaunts. It’s a gravy train and I think it’s unacceptable in the current climate,” he added. John Price, Chester City Council’s former Labour group leader, said it was ‘likely’ twinning enthusiasts would start a campaign to reverse the move. Mr Price, who recently returned from a trade fair in Sens at the weekend with his wife Ethel, said they had both paid the £50 per head coach fare out of their own pockets and stayed with friends. “It’s not purely about the money,” he said. “It started after the Second World War to bring towns in other countries together.”

Tip owners fight £68,000 penalty for illegal dumping THE operator of an illegal landfill in Oakmere is appealing against a £50,000 fine imposed for allowing half a million tonnes of controlled waste to be dumped at the site. ATA (Oakmere) LLP, of Newby Road Industrial Estate, Stockport, was also ordered to pay costs of £18,372.92 at Chester Magistrates Court on March 27.

Policeman denies murder

They were charged with knowingly permitting controlled waste to be deposited on land at Euro Lynx Equestrian Development Site in Hogshead Lane, Oakmere, between February 5, 2007 and November 7, 2007 when there was no waste management licence in force. The court heard how the operator intended to use 500,000 tonnes of waste

to infill the site to raise ground levels and eventually construct a polo pitch on top of it. Despite being aware that a licence was required from the Environment Agency for this activity, the company proceeded to accept waste at the site and dump it without any licence in place. The waste included construction, de-

molition and excavation waste, and ash produced from incinerators. Environment officer Lex Massey said: “The operator disregarded the Environment Agency’s advice regarding compliance with the necessary regulations.” The appeal will be heard at Chester Magistrates Court on Thursday, June 18.

VICTIM: Claire Howarth. A CHESHIRE police officer charged with the murder of his fiancée will stand trial later this year after pleading not guilty at a hearing at Manchester Crown Court. Winsford-based PC Martin Forshaw, known to colleagues as ‘Alex’ Forshaw, is accused of killing 31-year-old bride-to-be Claire Howarth by inflicting head injuries and then staging a car crash. He denied murder at a hearing on Monday morning. The 26-year-old was based at Cheshire police HQ on Oakmere Road, Winsford, but resigned after being formally charged. The couple were due to get married in St Lucia this month. Miss Howarth, a PC for Greater Manchester Police, was in a BMW which crashed on May 7 in Harwood. A post-mortem examination revealed she died from head injuries – but her injuries were not consistent with the collision, a police source said. Forshaw was remanded in custody and his trial, which is expected to last five to seven days, is scheduled to begin on November 23.

FUNDRAISERS are hard at work on behalf of Leighton Hospital in Crewe to ensure cancer patients have access to additional modern equipment and specialist care. The fundraising has been kick-started with a charitable donation by the hospital’s League of Friends. The generous group of hard-working volunteers have given £10,000 to the Laparoscopic Equipment Fund.

Off-duty cop steps in to foil ‘armed robbery’ AN off-duty police officer intervened to stop a suspected armed robbery at a Winsford off-licence – arresting a 20-year-old man in the process. The male PC, who has not been named, is based at the Cheshire Constabulary’s Winsford HQ. He stopped the man – who was allegedly carrying a gun and a knife – at 1.30pm as he entered Threshers on Over Square. STEPHEN O’Brien, parliamentary representative for Eddisbury, insists he’s fully committed to “transparency across every aspect of parliamentary democracy”. But the Tory MP – whose constituency covers Cuddington, Davenham, Moulton, Oakmere and Winsford – told the Chronicle he cannot yet release details of his expenses claims. The 52-year-old said he will make available “the details of his submissions for reimbursement of costs” as soon as he receives confirmation “that such disclosure is not in breach of the law”. He said this week: “Currently that information cannot be released due to the provisions of the Data Protection Act as it contains sensitive personal information relating to bank details and the addresses of the members of MPs’ staff and families, as well as MPs themselves. “However, that security-sensitive personal information is being separated from the documentation. “I have been though all my submissions and receipts and it is now up to the authorities to confirm that my documentation now conforms to the form in which it can be published without putting other people’s secure personal information at risk. “As soon as that process is complete and I receive that confirmation, then I and other MPs can make that information public.” He added: “We need transparency in all aspects of our parliamentary process and the way MPs are supported by the taxpayer to carry out the important role our constituents ask us to deliver on their behalf. Rebuilding trust in our democracy is vital.” ■ Tatton MP and shadow chancellor George Osborne, was told by Tory leader David Cameron last week he will have to repay the cost of a £440 taxi ride to Westminster from his Cheshire home in November 2005.

Former Cheshire cop helps hunt for Maddy A FORMER Northwich detective is helping Gerry and Kate McCann in the search for their missing daughter Madeleine.

Ex-Det Insp Dave Edgar, who has more than 30 years’ experience with Cheshire Police and the RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary), is leading the probe. He was involved in the inquiries into the Warrington murders of Garry Newlove and schoolgirl Shafilea Ahmed. He and fellow retired detective Arthur Cowley believe five separate sightings of a suspicious man could hold the key to solving the mystery of Madeleine’s disappearance. Three witnesses saw an odd stranger looking at her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in the days before Maddy went missing more than two years ago. The former policemen have put the previously-unreported accounts together with two better-known sightings of a man carrying a child away from the flat on the night Madeleine vanished.

Their theory, revealed in a recent Channel 4 documentary, is that someone was watching the McCanns’ apartment for up to a week before the little girl disappeared. Mr Edgar said it was most likely Madeleine was taken by one person. But he does not believe Madeleine was taken at random. He said: “In my experience random doesn’t happen. A passer-by doesn’t go in and pick up a child and take it. These things are planned. This offence happened in Praia da Luz. And that’s where I think the answer is.” Kate McCann believes the recent flurry of media attention will help in the search for Madeleine.

Web plea WINSFORD MP and Shadow Health Minister Stephen O’Brien is backing the call by the Country Land & Business Association for improved access to broadband services in rural areas. “I’ve been contacted by a large number of people in our area – rural businesses and home-workers – who are thoroughly fed up because they are unable to access proper and reliable broadband services which are sufficiently fast,” he said. “As the recession continues to deepen, it’s important rural businesses can maximise the potential speedy broadband can offer.”

Spare us from the ordeal by shopping! JUSTWilliam The musings of a middle-aged man from Middle England ALL men beware today, because my subject is a word we men all dread – shopping! It’s not that we hate shopping, we accept it as a necessary evil, what we hate is when our wives and girlfriends insist on taking us with them on a shopping trip because we know only too well what this entails. Sports shops are out, as are electrical shops. They contain little of interest to the average woman on a shopping trip, she goes in an electrical shop only to ensure we get the right colour fridge or microwave. Any other time she avoids them like the plague! We men, however, love the electrical shops with their wonderful array of gadgets, most of which are considered useless and pointless by the average woman. No, a ‘shopping trip’ entails endless shoe shops, clothes shops and the odd jewellery shop. It never ceases to amaze me how little my wife actually buys having spent several hours traipsing around every store in Northwich. We men go shopping to actually buy a particular item – new socks, new shoes or a shirt. We invariably come home with what we set out to buy. Women, on the other hand, do something entirely different. Initially they may go to buy a new pair of shoes, but she will switch her target to something else, a blouse, a skirt, anything so she comes home with something. Sometimes they even fail to do that. I was once in New York with my beloved and I fancied either a Macy’s Kit Bag or a Bloomingdale’s Kit Bag. All you had to do was buy an item for about $20 and the bag came free. My wife walked all around two of the biggest department stores in the world for three hours and found nothing she liked! One thing I sincerely hope will happen in the Northwich Vision is that Debenhams will come to Northwich – so that I won’t have to travel all the way to Chester or Manchester to walk around the shops there for a few hours, only to find they don’t have what my wife wants! What does she want? I have no idea and, more to the point, I don’t think she does either.

Greedy MPs are a disgrace!

THE greedy swines at Westminster have relegated pig flu into oblivion by their disgraceful ‘snouts in the trough’ antics. I watched the BBC’s Question Time this week and was delighted to see that the Great British public feel every bit as angry as I do by the moneygrabbing dirty dealings of the ‘honourable’ members. I’m not tarring them all with the same brush. The real snorters are the ones who repeatedly ‘flipped’ property at the taxpayers’ expense. The audacity of them is both sickening and breathtaking – and makes your blood boil. If I had my way, they would be tarred and feathered and drummed out of parliament. The first of the Telegraph revelations revealed these people for the mealy-mouthed vultures that they are. They blustered and wriggled with feeble excuses along the lines of: “It’s not us, it’s the rules.” But the revelations of greed and excess at our expense just kept on coming and after about a week, the ‘honourable’ members switched tactics and said sorry. A few of them claimed they would be paying back the money they filtched from us – although I’m sure some of them will find a way of us returning their ill-gotten gains with more money from our pockets! After all, that’s probably allowable by their interpretation of rules that rely on honesty and integrity! As I write, none of the major scandals have involved Cheshire MPs. George Osborne’s cheeky £440 taxi ride at our expense is the nearest we have come to a national disgrace on our doorstep – which is a drop in the ocean compared to some of what’s gone on. But I’m afraid that does not exonerate even the clean ones in my eyes. They must have known what was going on, yet not one of the 600-plus MPs had the guts to blow the whistle on their stinking rotten colleagues. None of them had the courage to expose the culture of greed in their midst. The rotten apples in the barrel now wriggle and squeal that their claims were approved by the pay office. It’s become clear that when they were challenged to justify outrageous claims, they bullied and taunted the poor lackeys into submission. This scandal – for which the Telegraph deserves a Pulitzer prize – has led the great British public from being political sceptics to absolute cynics.

Riding high on human kindness WHAT does the Thundersprint mean to people? Well, to myself, a 35-year-old biker and father-of-four, it means a great weekend of bikes, bikes, bikes! This year had an added tinge of exciting news – the one and only James Toseland was coming to town for the weekend. Him being my number one sporting hero, I was over the moon, so I started counting down the months. But all was not to happen. After an accident I ended up in hospital on April 22, undergoing a sevenhour operation to put my spine back in place. I had 12 pints of blood put into me but my mood remained upbeat – I was going to see JT soon. This dream was shattered when my surgeon told me I was to lie on my back for minimum of six weeks for the bone grafts and screws, bolts and rods to fuse together. I was gutted! But every cloud has a silver lining and mine came in the form of Frank and Carol Melling, the people who run and organise the Thundersprint. I emailed Frank and explained my predicament and when the weekend came round my wife and a couple of friends descended on Northwich. With the Mellings’ help, they searched out JT and he gave me a ring and we had a long chat! I asked him to sign my medical X-ray (which my wife had taken to show

him!). He was so relaxed – it just shows what a great man he is. And hats off to Frank and Carol who always ensure everyone visiting the

OINK OINK: One reader is angered by ‘greedy swine’ MPs and their expenses. Our politicians couldn’t have driven a more lethal stake into our democratic system if they’d tried! And the big danger is that this debacle is all going to have the most horrendous pay-back. The nauseated populace has Euro elections coming up and may punish the three main parties by voting for anyone else on the ballot slip – and that includes the divisive bigots of the BNP. Whatever happens, we must not let the right wing extrem-

my hat off to the BNP for bringing the comedy back into politics. In the midst of their bigoted tirade against anyone with minds bigger than their amoeba-sized own, they railed against EU expansion. They claim it would bring ‘Turkish Muslim job-snatching invaders’ to our shores. Later on in the leaflet they say they would reject ‘minority’ cultural and religious festivals in favour of celebrating ‘our’ saints, such as St George. Should someone tell them St George was probably Turkish or shall we leave it and have a bit more of a giggle? ANTHONY WHITE Gladstone Street, Northwich THE issue of MPs’ expenses dominates the ■ political agenda, and as

someone who has long campaigned for an open and honest approach, I welcome the pressure for change.

Thundersprint gets 100% from their weekend. The dedication these two give to the event is second to none. Here’s to next year and to a special couple, Frank and Carol. Two people I have yet to meet but already consider as friends. RIC PEPPER (by email)

But with elections to the European Parliament on June 4, it’s important to put this in context. The real problem we face is of a wholly different magnitude. Quite literally it is about how we save our world. The changes are hardly seen on a day-to-day basis, but within my lifetime world population has trebled and is growing at 200,000 a day. Nature is being devastated. Our use of scarce resources is accelerating and our burning of coal, gas and oil is changing our climate and will leave billions of people with little or no water. I’m proud of the work I have done in the European Parliament, especially on environmental issues. For all its faults, the European Parliament often feels more grown up than its counterpart at Westminster. In this election the ground is thick with parties opposed to Britain’s membership of the European Union. “All our problems are due to Europe,” they say. But they don’t even start to address the real problems we face. Only by countries working together and finding shared solutions can we hope to tackle them. CHRIS DAVIES NW Lib Dem MEP

WE at the RSPCA are ■ dismayed by the

European Parliament vote on a new lab animal law which fell woefully short of what should be done to improve animal welfare. We had feared that the European Parliament would cave in after pro-animal use lobbyists’ exaggerated claims that tougher rules on using primates for testing would lead to live-saving research grinding to a halt. Sadly, our fears proved well-founded! MEPs overwhelmingly supported a declaration calling for an end to great apes and wild-caught primates use in Europe and a clear strategy for replacing all primate experiments with humane alternatives. Sadly, when given the chance to put these words into action, they failed! This means that they have betrayed the thousands of primates who will continue to be confined in laboratories and used in experiments. The public will be staggered to learn there are no measures to end the suffering of these remarkable animals. A once-in-a-generation opportunity has been lost. Nicki’s art goes on display in farm shop A LITTLE Budworth farm shop is keeping its heritage firmly in farming with the opening of a new Friesian-themed coffee shop, inspired by a Cheshire artist, next week. The Hollies Farm Shop, at Little Budworth, is opening The Friesian Room at its new coffee

shop and will be displaying and selling artwork from artist Nikki Hart, who specialises in painting Friesian cows. Abstract pictures of Friesian cows will provide the backdrop and have inspired the name of the seating area in the new coffee shop – The Friesian Room.

Ed Cowap said: “It’s really exciting to have Nikki’s work in the new coffee shop as her work is unique and her passion for art is inspirational. “We hope that Nikki’s Friesian cows will be popular with customers.” Nikki Hart, based at Sandbach, said: “It’s great that I have

been given the opportunity to exhibit my artwork at The Hollies as it gives me the chance to reach a new audience. “I never thought cows would be one of my main subjects but I discovered them to be a really attractive animal and people have this fascination with them.”

WOODFORD LODGE HIGH YEAR 9 students at Woodford Lodge High School in Winsford were given a chilling account of what it is like to have been personally affected by the Holocaust. Joanna Millan, whose parents were both killed in Nazi concentration camps during the Second World War, visited the school on Thursday to talk to pupils and answer questions about her experiences. Ruth Cawley and Sophia Oakes, Year 12 students from Winsford Sixth Form, also gave a presentation based on their visit to Auschwitz in October as part of their A-Level history studies. Teacher Alan Jacks said: “We hope this event will help the Year 9 pupils to empathise and appreciate the importance of this event in 20th Century history.”

Food outlets given nil rating for hygiene By Dave Goodban

THREE Mid Cheshire food outlets have been panned over their food hygiene standards. A take-away and an Indian restaurant in Northwich were both given a 0/5 star food hygiene compliance rating during the most recent round of unannounced inspections by environmental health officers. A Winsford curry house had an equally poor assessment. The Caspian and the Cheshire Tandoori, both on Chester Road, Northwich, were ranked among the poorest for standards in the old Vale Royal area, along with the Dildar restaurant on High Street, Winsford. All three have been inspected in the last six months. An online report reveals the outlets have “poor appreciation of hazards and control measures”, “poor” general hygiene and safety and track records of “major non-compliance with statutory obligations”. The information can be viewed in full at www.scoresonthedoors.org.uk, a national public information website on which the official local authority hygiene ratings for food businesses can be checked. Of the 908 premises listed in the former Vale Royal area, there are only eight with no stars. The others – which were last assessed more than 12 months ago – are the One Stop Shops on Delamere Street and Wharton Road , Winsford; Moulton Methodist Church; The Shrewsbury Arms at Little Budworth

Ian Callister, spokesman for Cheshire West and Chester Council which is now responsible for monitoring and maintaining hygiene standards, said: “The council closely monitors establishments with poor

hygiene ratings. Any establishment that fails to comply with food hygiene improvement notices will face prosecution.” The Caspian, Cheshire Tandoori and Dildar all said they were working with the council to improve standards.

SUCCESSFUL: Hotelier Hazel Johnson-Ollier

A RISE in the national minimum wage will help one million low-paid workers in the UK. Weaver Vale MP Mike Hall has hailed news that the Government will increase the pay for the lowest paid from October 2009 – even though the rises are minimal. For workers aged 22 and over, it will rise from £5.73 to £5.80 an hour; the rate for 18-22 year olds will increase from £4.77 to £4.83; and for 16-17 year-olds it will go up from £3.53 to £3.57 an hour. From October 2010 the top rate

will be extended to 21-year-olds. Mr Hall said: “The minimum wage has been in place for 10 years and remains one of the most important rights for workers. “I’m very proud of the difference it has made to the lives of the UK’s lowest-paid workers. It protects them from exploitation and also creates a level playing field for business, making a huge contribution to the UK’s economic success. “This increase is a fair deal for people who work hard – and represents extra help for almost a million people.”

Supermarket awaits ruling

Richmond Village, Nantwich

• Independent Luxury Retirement Apartments surrounded by award-winning gardens EXPANSION HOPE: Sainsbury’s wants to extend its Barons Quay store in Northwich but has run into difficulties over town centre regeneration plans. SAINSBURY’S will find out today whether a High Court bid to extend its Northwich store has been successful. The supermarket giant claims it was wrongly refused planning permission when the former Vale Royal Borough Council decided it wanted the prime site to form part of the Barons Quay redevelopment, which is expected to attract £300m worth of investment. It is asking High Court deputy judge David Holgate QC to quash a government planning inspector’s decision backing the refusal of planning permission. The company hopes the judge

will order Secretary of State Hazel Blears to have its application reconsidered. Vale Royal refused planning permission on the basis that the Sainsbury’s site occupies a key position within the redevelopment area. The Local Plan policy states that proposals that prejudice the Barons Quay plans will not be permitted, and the council decided an extension of the supermarket would conflict with the aims of the redevelopment. Developers want the supermarket to move to the current Matalan site to make room for an

80,000sq ft department store – expected to be Debenhams – as part of the multi-million-pound scheme. A spokesperson for the old authority said last year Sainsbury’s had agreed “in principle” to moving, but the chain lodged an appeal nonetheless. It claims the extension would not prejudice the project, and that it would help develop the site ‘in a way consistent with the objectives of the scheme’. Former councillor Tony Lawrenson said: “The regeneration will go ahead with or without Sainsbury’s.”

It’s not about town versus countryside

THE Countryside Alliance has launched its Rural Manifesto, our campaigning focus up to the General Election. The manifesto identifies five key areas and is urging supporters to sign up to its aims. As Britain’s best known and most effective rural campaigning group we are offering the next Government a blueprint for putting the countryside at the heart of its policy. The manifesto promotes changes in five key areas that will make a real and lasting difference to the countryside: housing; education; farming; country pursuits and services. Our countryside is a national treasure admired around the world but it is also a home and workplace for millions of us. Yet those who live and work there can be forgiven for feeling at times that it does not receive the political support it deserves. Divisive politics, media misrepresentation and a lack of understanding can create a gap between rural and urban areas. Yet there should be no conflict over ‘town or country’. The challenge is doing the best for both town and country. Our aims are deliberately realistic and achievable. In these challenging times a vital, working and thriving countryside for the benefit of the whole nation is more necessary than ever. You can find out more about the manifesto and sign up to our aims at www.countryside-alliance.org.uk KATE HOEY MP Chairman, Countryside Alliance, Kennington Road, London

THE Alzheimer’s Research Trust, with Sir Terry Pratchett as patron, is the least represented charity in the North West. And if you talk to people, nearly everyone knows someone who has or had dementia. We hope to fundraise for the Alzheimer’s Research Trust throughout the year, and are happy to train people to run the Alzheimer’s Charity Auction. All details are shown on our website www.ahtrust.net. The Alzheimer’s Charity Auction is a fun event for everyone, for the people who donate valuable items and for the volunteers who collect the items and take them to the auctioneer for valuation. All proceeds will go to the Alzheimer's Research Trust. Later on in the year we’ll be organising a fundraising balloon race and we look forward to hearing from people who want to help. Cadets best in UK for third year running NORTHWICH cadets are top in the country for academic achievement – for the third year running! The Foster Trophy is presented to the cadet with the highest marks throughout their technical training and the Currall Trophy is presented to the person who achieved the second highest marks. In total, 146 cadets won these awards out of 60,000 other cadets from the UK. For a squadron to win both trophies in the same year is rare, but Northwich has broken this trend by winning both awards for the last three years. Cadet Sergeant Jimmy Pickup was presented with the Foster Trophy and Cdt Sgt James Moores received the Currall Trophy. Air Commodore Ian Stewart, the highest ranking officer in the Air Cadet organisation, visited Northwich to present them with their trophies. He said: “I was delighted to award these two prestigious trophies to cadets from this impressive squadron. “It is heart-warming to see such a vibrant and successful squadron within the Air Training Corps. “The cadets are a credit to the corps and reflect the hard work put in by the dedicated volunteers of 146 (Northwich) Squadron.”

Jab paying dividends

Smart thinking on fuel

CASES of cervical cancer could be cut by nearly 75% in Cheshire West thanks to a vaccination programme. So far more than 2,000 girls across the district have been immunised with the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. It protects against the two types of HPV which cause more than 70% of cervical cancers. In Cheshire West, NHS chiefs say uptake of the jabs is ‘extremely encouraging’. The programme now covers girls aged 16-18. “We urge all young women to go for a jab. It protects against most cervical cancers and is a sensible investment in their health,” says NHS health director Wendy Meredith.

WEAVER Vale MP Mike Hall, pictured, says constituents will save money on their fuel bills when Smart Meters roll out. The Government is expected to install the revolutionary kit in homes across the country. The meters will mean no more estimated bills, no more waiting for the meter man to call and greater help to cut your energy use, save money and reduce your carbon footprint. They will enable meter readings to be taken remotely and, together with a display device, give householders real time information on their energy use. In trials some households estimate they have saved as much as 10% off their bills.

TALENT SPOTTERS: Britain’s Got Talent’s showbiz judges Piers Morgan, Amanda Holden and pop guru Simon Cowell, with Geordie presenters Ant and Dec.

Pair blossom on stage A TALENTED Mid Cheshire duo blossomed on the big stage on Saturday in front of a national television audience. Floral Highnotes, aka Helena Leonard and Ian Lloyd, performed their unique act for a panel of showbiz judges – and millions of TV viewers – on ITV’s show Britain’s Got Talent. While soprano Helena, 44, sings opera, 43-year-old florist Ian prepares a bespoke bouquet to match the mood!

And the pair were a big hit with judges Piers Morgan and Amanda Holden, who described the act as “just perfect”. Helena and Ian, who have known each other for most of their lives, created Floral Highnotes in 2001. Helena has sung throughout the UK and parts of Europe. She has performed on the concert platform and in fully staged productions with esteemed opera companies such as English National

Opera, Welsh National Opera and Scottish Opera. Ian has won numerous awards in the floristry world and was named ‘one of the countries top ten florists’ by The Independent. The pair are now through the second round. The show’s winning act will receive £100,000 and get to perform at the Royal Variety Performance in front of the Queen and the Royal Family.

Community groups saved by MP’s Bill

Robert returns to NHS as a director

WEAVER Vale MP Mike Hall has introduced a Parliamentary Bill to help small community groups. He introduced the 10-Minute Rule Bill to exempt places of worship, community sports clubs, Scout groups and guide associations from paying surface area and highway charges. It comes about after United Utilities, with the backing of water regulator OFWAT, changed the way non-households pay these charges. This left the small groups facing massive increases in their water bills. Some will see them rise from zero to £2,000 per annum. Following a concerted one year campaign against the change, UU decided

ROBERT Tinston has been re-appointment as a non-executive director to NHS Western Cheshire. Originally appointed in 2006, he has been welcomed back after his secondment as interim chair of the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic and District Hospital NHS Trust in Shropshire. Professor Tinston, who lives in Utkinton, has extensive senior experience in managing health services. He was an NHS manager for 30 years including two spells as Chief Executive of major teaching hospitals in Leeds and Liverpool. Before he retired in 2002, he had

to freeze the charges at 2008/09 levels for those groups, for a year, not so they could be axed but so they could be better explained to the groups. Mr Hall said: “A 12-month delay on implementing the changes to the way these groups pay for surface water and highway drainage is not the answer. “Many of these groups will not be able to afford their increased water bills and be forced to close. “Exempting them from surface area and highway drainage charging is what is needed. I am therefore delighted the House of Commons give me permission to bring forward a Bill to achieve this exemption.”

been Regional Director of the NHS in the North West and a member of the NHS Executive Board. MP defends expenses claims I FULLY understand the anger and concern about the Additional Costs Allowance claims made by Members of Parliament. I take my responsibilities towards being a Member of Parliament very seriously. Part of my work as an MP is carried out in the constituency and part of it is carried out in London in the House of Commons. This is crucial if I am to work effectively on behalf of my constituents. The claims I have made are legitimate and reflect the cost of living and working in London. That said there is absolutely no doubt that this system is in need of urgent reform. That is why I voted for the reforms to the additional costs allowance when they came before the House of Commons on April 30. I very much welcome the fact that Sir Christopher Kelly and the Committee on Public Life is now conducting a wide ranging review of MPs’ expenses. The aim of this review is to devise a set of arrangements which commands public confidence in the necessary financial support provided for MPs in doing their job. I believe that MPs’ claims should be independently audited to ensure that each claim is in order and fully compliant with the rules. I want to see this reform brought in immediately. The House of Commons now needs to bring forward urgent reforms to reassure the public that we take this matter very ser-

effect dealing with the stinking, rotten stench from Westminster. The sooner those MPs who have immorally sought to manipulate the expenses system for maximum personal gain are cleared out of politics, the better. In relation to my own claims the most recent figures show that my staff wages, including employer contributions, were £94,671. I have one full time member of staff and four part-time members of staff. The costs, wages and number of employees are fully compliant with Parliamentary regulations. On average we deal with approximately 4,000 new cases per year. The cost of running my constituency office, including rent, telecommunications, printing etc. was £17,087. IN THE Chronicle of April 15, I suggested householders challenge candidates for the June 4 elections on the benefits they and their parties bring to the North West. To the best of my knowledge none of them has informed us what benefits we derive from EC membership. Before casting your vote, ponder on the following. All MEPs from June will get £76,360 per annum, up from £63,29 – plus a subsistence allowance of £255 per day. Staffing allowances and constituency office allowances add another £223,000. We, the electorate might not gain many benefits from the EU, but there’s no need to ask who does. No doubt someone will tell us that they are all worth it. W J YOUNG Chesterfield Close, Winsford

IT’S thoughtful of ‘WHS’ to enlighten the public to the benefits of mass immigration. His notion that Britain was built on immigration is nonsense put forward by fanatical supporters of multi-culturalism. It was our forefathers who made this country great, not a multitude of immigrants from across the globe. Indeed one could argue our society has never been so broken since we allowed unfettered immigration. Does it not concern ‘WHS’ that we are fast becoming the most densely populated country on the planet? He goes on to say we need immigrants

These events have been very popular with constituents. The cost of travelling to London and back and around the constituency was £13,092. My staff travel costs to the House of Commons was £1,939. I claimed £23,067 towards the additional costs for living in London. My annual salary was £60,675. In total the costs for 2007/08 were £228,646. I believe I offer an excellent service to my Weaver Vale constituents. I strive to respond to all letters and emails within

as much as they need us. Seeing that our prisons are bursting with a disproportionate number of foreign criminals and our welfare system is creaking under the strain of immigrants, I find that hard to believe. That said I don’t blame immigrants in any way. The blame lies with treacherous governments who refuse to put British people first. ‘WHS’ says immigrants shouldn’t be allowed into Britain unless they can support themselves and that foreign criminals should be deported. These two measures are nothing more than most BNP members want but it will never happen. The BNP is not just about immigration. Violent thugs who batter people senseless would get a taste of their own medicine with the return of corporal punishment. British jobs for British workers goes without saying. After following politics for 50 years, I know a vote for any of the three main political party’s means no change and no chance for the indigenous population. It’s imperative we send out a message to politicians across the spectrum that we are no longer prepared to sit back and watch our country be destroyed. Put Britain first. Vote BNP on June 4. GEORGE MATHER Stubbs Lane Lostock Gralam PS How can the Rev Ian Bishop, along with the Archbishop of York, say people can’t be Christians if they vote BNP? I object to these self-righteous bigots telling me what I can and can’t do, especially as it’s their love of mass immigration which will signal the end of Christianity. I am a Christian and a member of the BNP, and proud of both. Surely as men

UKIP on the up

YOUR readers may wonder why BNP supporters are choosing to attack UKIP. Well, the answer is that they were obviously aware of UKIP’s anticipated success in the Hartlepool by-election. Labour won in this socialist stronghold, but UKIP came second, with nearly twice the votes of the Lib Dem and BNP parties and three times those of the Tories! This is a fantastic challenge to Labour, representing something like 25% of the vote! Labour MPs must now be worrying about the outcome of the EU Elections, as well as everything else. UKIP’s policies, which include ‘No’ to uncontrolled immigration, ‘No’ to £40m a day (!) being sent to Brussels, and ‘No’ to control of our Parliament by the EU, are beginning to make sense to the British people. And, of course, they are rejecting the transfer of sterling to the Euro which the Lib Dems want. Meanwhile, the other hidden EU issue this last week has been Labour’s nauseating behaviour towards the Gurkhas. Even Joanna Lumley has been left stunned by the about-turns, after she thought she had been given assurances by Gordon Brown. The reason being, of course, that the PM has no control over the issue, because Brussels dictates that the Gurkhas have no rights over Bulgarian criminals, for example. The truth came out from the mouth of Phil Woolas, (Immigration Minister) when he was quoted in today’s newspapers as saying that allowing in the Gurkhas, would also allow all the Com-

Abandoned pets

TIMES are hard for cash-strapped households, but abandoning the family cat, dog or other pet to save money is abhorrently cruel and selfish. Recent figures from the RSPCA reveal that 30 animals are abandoned or killed every day, a 50% rise on 2007 figures. I’M URGING people to get behind a local fundraising appeal to help children with heart conditions. The Children’s Heart Appeal aims to raise £113,000 for a 3D echocardiograph machine to help children from all areas treated at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. Sadly one in 145 children are born with one of the most common forms of birth defects, congenital heart disease – an abnormality of the heart’s structure or function that is present from birth. The 3D echocardiograph machine is used to assess diseased heart valves and is especially useful for diagnosing problems in infants as it is easy to do and doesn’t hurt. Has your family or a family you know been helped by the work of the British Heart Foundation? Would you like to find out more about how you can support the appeal? HE Harlequin Theatre is bringing an award-winning drama about modern journalism to Northwich for its North West premiere. Steve Thompson won the Arts Council’s 2005 Meyer Whitworth Award for new theatrical writing with this fast-moving, punchy tale of power-hungry hacks, suicidal sub-editors and razor-sharp lawyers. “Think Max Clifford meets The Office crossed with Drop The Dead Donkey!” said Chris Finney, who chose the play for his directorial debut with the Harlequins Players. “As the London Evening Standard put it, ‘anyone who has ever had a friend, a job or read a newspaper will find Damages enthralling’.” Finney has certainly assembled a strong cast to bring the play from London to The Harlequins’ stage in Queen Street, Northwich. Baz, the new sub-editor, is played by Matthew Lambert (The Glass Menagerie), with Richard Sadler (Pygmalion, Of Mice and Men) as Lister, a hard-nosed reporter relentlessly pursuing the story of the year. Stacey Hirst (Of Mice and Men, Steel Magnolias) plays Abigail, the legal eagle, while Dave Gilliver (Henry V, Forgotten Voices) is Howard, a veteran newsman who understands the need to meet deadlines. Folk at forefront

SPRING Bank Holiday weekend is traditionally the time of year when Kelsall comes alive with the sound of folk music. This year’s event comes at a time when folk looks to resume its place in mainstream music and some of its foremost exponents will be visiting the area for this year’s Chester Folk Festival. The festival gets under way at about 8pm on Friday and runs right through until late on Bank Holiday Monday. The event, which has been running now for more than 30 years, seems to go from strength to strength and this year’s guest list is as strong as ever, reflecting the huge talent and diversity on the current folk music scene. Each of the three main days has a double supply of headline acts. On Saturday these are Brass Monkey and Chris Sherburn and Denny Bartley. Brass Monkey is an 80s supergroup re-united, bringing together two legendary folk performers in Martin Carthy and John Kirkpatrick with the added bonus of brass instruments, mouth organ and percussion. Together they produce something really special with acoustic instruments blasting out a wild, gloriously unique sound. Chris and Denny, meanwhile, have been playing regularly at Chester Folk Festival to huge acclaim, both as a duo and with Nick Scott as Last Night’s Fun, since their first appearance in 1996. Back as a duo once again, Denny’s distinctive vocal style and powerful rhythmic guitar playing is coupled with Chris’ virtuoso concertina. Sunday sees the festival welcoming Lau, who have become one of the most sought after bands on the current Scottish folk scene. Having taken festivals by storm across the country as well as in Europe and North America, they were voted best group in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2008 and again in 2009. They will be joined by Bob Fox and Stu Luckley who hail from the North East of England. They were nominated for Best Duo in the 2009 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Monday sees the welcome return of Brian Peters, a performer who combines a high level of skill on three different instruments with a great voice and an energetic stage presence. He’s a leading English squeezebox player, doubling on melodeon and anglo concertina, a fine guitarist and a passionate singer. He will share the limelight with Crowfoot, a folk trio of international origins (Canada, UK,

A bright “star-like luminary” of different colours and shapes, is stimulating debate on YouTube, blogs and newspapers. On 12 December 2008 Share International Foundation announced that a “bright star” would soon be visible around the world, night and day. For 35 years modern British ‘prophet’ Benjamin Creme has prepared the way for the emergence of Maitreya, the World Teacher. Creme affirms that the “star” heralds Maitreya’s imminent appearance and first interview on US television.

Covering Cheshire and surrounding areas c. £23,000 pa + Company car + Benefits | 40 hours per week At G4S, our Court Services teams have unrivalled expertise in caring for prisoners whilst they are on court premises and during transit. Each year we transport over half a million people between courts, prisons and police stations. We now have an opportunity for an organised and motivated Custody Team Leader to join us in the Cheshire area. Reporting to the Regional Manager, you’ll be responsible for the effective and efficient management of services at our vehicle base as well as courts across Cheshire. Working in these fast-paced environments isn’t just about keeping people behind bars or driving them from A to B in secure vehicles. Of course safety and security are the main focus of what we do, but it’s also about being vigilant, versatile, non-judgmental, disciplined and treating people with respect and consideration. Providing support to the Senior Custody Officers and their teams means that excellent communication and interpersonal skills coupled with the ability to lead and motivate are crucial to the success of this role. Experience of managing and developing a team, along with the ability to formulate procedures and a sound understanding of how operational contracts work is essential. Previous experience within a custodial environment would also be an advantage. If you have great organisational skills, a full UK driving licence and are committed to delivering excellence, this could be your next career move. If you feel you can step up to the challenge and would like to join our progressive team, please email your CV and covering letter to Gemma Shore at: recruitment.cjs@uk.g4s.com or apply online via our website: www.g4s.com/uk by Friday 22nd May 2009. Toyota’s green pacemaker vsehxiwx with

TOYOTA was never in the market in the UK to go head to head with the likes of the Ford Mondeo, but the top-sellers are now looking anxiously over their shoulders because the latest version of the sector competitor, Avensis has a lot to offer in terms of green credentials and European looks.

This is the third generation of Toyota’s European flagship and is built exclusively at the company’s Burnaston factory in the UK. One of the biggest pulls of Avensis is Toyota’s Optimal Drive technologies which deliver lower emissions and fuel consumption with no compromise in performance and driving pleasure. First launched in late 1997, Avensis has increased its share of the European D-segment from 6% to 8% Toyota expects the new model to further strengthen its market performance. This third generation Avensis had a mission and that was to carry a strong European mark. And unlike previous models, it sits visually well against competitors like the VW Passat. One of the principal challenges facing the new Avensis design team was to create a car that was powerful, safe and fun to drive, but which also made a substantial

SPACIOUS INTERIOR: Xli Xs}sxe Ezirwmw sjjivw kssh kviir gvihirxmepw2 contribution to reducing carbon dioxide and other harmful emissions. And Toyota has gone the extra mile to achieve this. Wherever possible, in every part of the vehicle, it has applied all its engineering efforts to reduce CO2 and drive fuel consumption down. Heart of this philosophy is the innovative Toyota Optimal Drive technology in its range of new petrol engines, upgraded diesel power units and advanced new transmissions. These powertrains are much more planet-friendly without compromising power and driving pleasure. The European theme is reflected in Avensis’ design parentage. It was created at the company’s studio in the South of France,

and it does look much better in both its saloon and tourer body styles. The previous generation Avensis was praised for its roomy interior and on the new model Toyota worked to heighten the perception of space by moving the A-pillar forward by 110m andtheC-pillarbackby50mm.Theinteriorfeels particularly spacious and instrumentation is much better planned. ents, lightweight compact design and enhanced combustion efficiency. On new Avensis’ petrol engines, Toyota Optimal Drive maximises efficiency, power and torque through new Valvematic technology that allowsoptimal valveliftandtiming to generate top-level performance. Valvematic engines, across the range these achieve a reduction in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption of between 10 and 26%.Key words in everyday Avensis driving are silence and refinement. Don’t expect the 1.8 to be a spectacular performer but for a large comfortable saloon, its green credentials are superb

TOYOTA Land Cruiser, one of the most respected names in the world of off-road driving may have been around for a long time, but it is at the forefront of keeping the large 4x4 lean and green. Toyota has achieved a significant reduction in exhaust emissions from the legendary Land Cruiser, cutting its tax liability and strengthening its cost of ownership profile. Adopting a new low viscosity differential oil has helped bring down the CO2 figure for the 3.0-litre D-4D automatic from 238 to 224g/km, ratified by a re-test of the model by the Vehicle Certification Agency. As a result Land Cruiser moves from Band L to Band K for Vehicle Excise Duty, almost halving the annual road tax cost (down from £405 to £215). This £190 reduction is reflected in a lower on-the-road price. When equivalent competitors from the Land Rover Discovery and Mitsubishi Shogun range still come with a hefty £400 Road Tax bill, then Toyota's move proves extremely astute.

Leon’s a real looker

WE’VE probably all bought tickets for a concert or show, then been irritated to find our friends in the cheaper seats actually have a better view of the stage.

It can be a bit like that with cars – especially ones from the same stable. Take the Volkswagen Automobile Group for example. VAG also owns Audi, Spanish marque SEAT and the resurgent Czech outfit Skoda. The latter pair don’t cost as much as their more upmarket companions, but are they actually cheaper in anything other than price? Certainly in the case of SEAT versus VW, the answer is more to do with taste and image than quality and styling. The SEAT Leon, which is based on the MkV Golf, has the looks, the build and the technology yet is much cheaper to buy. And since its launch less than four years ago it has also proved extremely reliable. In fact, with its elegant low profile body, the Leon has to be one of the best looking five-door hatchbacks on the market. This model featured a 1.4-litre petrol engine, the smallest though not the least powerful in the Leon range – and it really packs a punch. The turbocharged unit produces 125PS allowing swift acceleration while the SEAT’s roadholding is excellent. A driver can easily find a comfortable driving position, though the roofline is low making access slightly less straightforward, but the steering wheel is nicely

balanced and the six-speed manual transmission slick. Another impressive touch is the way the rear door handles are concealed in the door frames – it all contributes to an impressively sporty and enjoyable car to drive. Fuel economy is useful too, the Leon averaging around 42 miles per gallon – just a couple below the claimed consumption figure.

Inside, the cabin isn’t the most inspiring place to be as the fascia and fittings are drab and some of the plastics feel cheap. That said, there’s plenty of room up front and the rear is deceptively spacious, though the centre position is perched and legs are splayed either side of the transmission tunnel. The boot is reasonable rather than cavernous, but the rear seats split and

ROUNDUp Wings A soar highest

Oakmere break duck in dramatic style

PROUD: Wings A. DARTS: Northwich’s sharpest shooters Wings A are delighted to clinched the Mid Cheshire League title – breaking the long winning streak of rivals Rudheath A. They won 27 of their 30 matches played. Captain Bob Eyes said: “After a dramatic 5-3 win over Weaverham CC, we went two points clear and managed to stay ahead and win the title.” They line up above as: S Wright, F Ashbrook, J Strain, J Speed, K Penny, I Palfreyman, N Wright, B Eyes, J Cooper, A Wilson F Smith and D Newton.

Touring Cars at Oulton

MOTORSPORT: The British Touring Car Championship roars into Oulton Park on May Bank Holiday weekend. Last year’s meeting saw the largest crowd for a decade flood through the Cheshire circuit’s gates, and fans can expect more of the same bumper-to-bumper racing and last-gasp overtaking as old rivalries are renewed in 2009. Matt Neal has taken an early season lead in his Vauxhall VXR, but he is under pressure from the fast starting BMW 320si of Team RAC’s Colin Turkington. Lurking ominously behind the leading pair is current champion Fabrizio Giovanardi. Fans’ favourite Jason Plato is also in the mix after securing a late deal in his RML-run Racing Silverline Chevrolet Lacetti, taking on the likes of former champion James Thompson, who returns to British soil with Team Dynamics in a Honda Civic. With a whole host of drivers involved in the early season title chase, and reverse grids throwing up some surprise results in the races, it is impossible to predict who will come away from Oulton Park with the points. To book tickets, priced from £23-29 go to www.motorsportvision.co.uk/oulton-park or call 0870 950 9000.

Nicky’s silver success

ATHLETICS: Vale Royal’s American university star Nicky Archer picked up another medal last weekend at the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The 24-year-old former Weaverham High School pupil, who is running for the New Mexico Lobos while studying for a masters degree in sports administration, claimed a silver in the 5,000m at the Louis Madrid Sports Complex in Wyoming. Archer’s time of 17 minutes and one second pipped team-mate Laura Bowerman into third by six seconds.

Lostock lift cup glory

FOOTBALL: A week after claiming runners-up spot in the Crewe & District League, Lostock Gralam’s successful reserve team won the league’s Arthur Cooke Trophy. In an exciting final, they beat Tarporley Vics Reserves 4-2, but almost blew it after taking a 2-0 interval lead through Jack Bryning and Peter Gibbon. Tarporley hit back to equalise with goals in the 60th and 87th minute, only for Bryning and Gibbon to strike again in injury time. The Grey Lambs completed their league programme with a 5-4 win against Manchester Met University at Alsager, finishing one point behind Curshaws, who retained the title from 2007-08.

Alan’s Great support

RUNNING: Great Britain’s bobsleigh team will be swapping the Alpine peaks for Marbury park in Northwich on Friday, May 22, as they show their support for local marathon runner Alan Maddock. Maddock is embarking on a 12-hour sponsored run around the park to raise money for the Joshua Tree Charity and British 4x100m relay gold medallist from the 2002 Commonwealth Games and current British bobsleigher, Allyn Condon, will be on hand to offer his support, along with his team-mates from the Great Britain bobsleigh team. Pupils from Cransley and Leftwich Primary School’s will also show their support during Alan’s challenge by donning their running shoes and taking part in a distance of the run with him.

OAKMERE are up and running in the Cheshire County League on Saturday after a deserved victory over Mobberley with just three balls on the match remaining. Hosts Mobberley posted a decent score of 191-6 but Oakmere’s line-up stood up well and grabbed the dramatic victory at 192-6. Paul Guilford led the way with 46, backed up by Rob Lyons (39) and Peter Yearsley (36). Skipper Ian Eaton said: “It was a difficult game but it’s great to get that first win under out belts. The most pleasing thing for me is that

we have improved week on week. “The first weekend, we got battered and that could massively demoralise a team but we have bounced back. “That was the strongest team we have had out all season so if we can keep the boys together and concentrate on targeting certain games where can pick up points then we will be ok. “Middlewich a flying at the moment so it will be another tough game for us this weekend.” On Saturday, Oakmere host Mid-

dlewich at Overdale Lane (1pm). ■ A magnificent innings of 161 from former Weaverham High pupil Danny Leech was the highlight on an otherwise frustrating day for third-placed Oulton Park. Leech’s knock was well supported by Rick Moore (58) as the hosts posted an imposing 303-4 at Little Budworth. But in reply Oxton fought hard and held out on 166-6 in a match that was reduced in overs due to the weather. This Saturday, Park visit league leaders Bowdon (12.30pm).

Park lose out but rivals are in form Cricket NORTHWICH warmed up for Saturday’s eagerly-anticipated showdown with Winnington Park with a dominant display at Moss Farm.

Batting first against Alvanley, Northwich declared on 165-7 with skipper John O’Sullivan leading the way with an impressive 47. Martin East supported with 38. In reply, the hitherto league leaders were pinned back by the hosts’ bowling attack as they held out on 86-8. Looking forward to the big derby this weekend, O’Sullivan said: “We can take great heart from an excellent bowling display that was backed up with some exceptional fielding as we look forward to entertaining Park.” Park are currently out of sorts and still without a win in Meller Braggins League Division One. Electing to field on Saturday, Park, being led by Brian Shingler in the absence of captain Phil Amatiello, made a decent start and bowled out visiting Ashley for 146 (Jason Hayes 6-71, James Cowell 4-28). But in reply, Park’s line-up crumbled under the pressure and were all out for just 103. Saturday’s clash with Northwich starts at 1.30pm. Also struggling and without a victory so far is Davenham who narrowly missed out in a thrilling low-scoring affair at Butcher’s Stile. The hosts made just 92 all out but took visiting Barrow close as the Chester side grabbed victory with 96-9. Davenham travel to Malpas on Saturday (1.30pm). In Division Two, Barnton got one over local rivals Weaverham at Broomsedge thanks to an impressive bowling display. Batting first, Barnton posted by 148-6 (Ben Wingfield 38, Kevin Douglas 2-30) and in

BOWLS FACING UP: Northwich’s Mark Rebbeck poised against Alvanley at Moss Farm on Saturday. RS160509Cric-007 reply the Russetts came agonisingly close scoring 148 all out (Steve Robertson 28). Also in Division Two, Winsford were frustrated at Over Peover and were forced to accept a winning draw. Batting first the Knight’s Grange outfit made 121 all out but in reply the hosts could only post 95-8 and held out for a share of the

spoils. On Saturday, Winsford host Alderley Park. In the Cheshire Alliance, Hartford suffered against Appleton at Grange Park after they were dismissed for 101. In reply the visitors eased their way to 103-3, Graham Prew taking 3-20. This Saturday, Hartford visit Knutsford.

The Mid Cheshire Sunday League champions, led by Gary Bryning, also lifted the Mid Cheshire District FA Sunday Cup and the Mid Cheshire Sunday League Cup after against Winsford sides The Gate and The Ark. Club spokesman Steve Carter said: “It is the

Football first time in about 40 years that anyone has done the treble. We won the double last year so we’ve gone one better. “We’ve got a decent squad with some lads playing non-league football and the core of the side have been playing and drinking together for years. We’ve had a great season.”

Royals enjoy the big stage

VALE Royal runners braved the rain this weekend to perform well on two of the biggest stages.

The Mid Cheshire club were well represented at both the Great Manchester Run, screened live on the BBC, and the Shell Chester Half Marathon, which attracted more than 2,500 competitors. Administrators arrive at Vics as owner says...

THIS IS THE ONLY WAY FORWARD Football

By Ben Coulbeck

IT was only a matter of time but Northwich Vics have officially been placed into administration.

Owner Jim Rushe confirmed that the decision was taken last Friday to try to alleviate strangling tax debts of about £400,000, inherited from former chairman Mike Connett. Threats of winding-up orders, unpaid wages, falling income and spiralling running costs are just some of the reasons why, without a major investor, bringing in administrators is needed to keep Vics afloat. It is not yet known whether Vics will be consequently punished by the Football Conference but Rushe told the Chronicle that going into administration is to safeguard the future of the football club. He said: “The reasons are that because of the current financial climate, dropping into a lower division means that the revenue coming in will be less and the club’s commitments before my time meant that I just could not take the club forward in its present form. “It is to protect the club from any winding up order and protect the long term future of Northwich Victoria.” Vics’ short-term future has been placed in the hands of administrator Daniel Hennessy, who has expertise is helping firms recover from the threat of financial meltdown and is based at the operations office of Refresh Business Group in Skelmersdale, Lancashire. He was not available for comment as the Chronicle went to press but last week assured fans that Refresh would make every effort to safeguard the future of the club. Rushe was also keen to allay any fears supporters may have about the decision to take the club into administration and said he would be op-

erating an open-door policy at the Marston’s Arena. He said: “I speak to the supporters at every single meeting and I have always been honest about what is going on but I am at the ground every day so if anybody wants to come down and talk to me about it then they are welcome to. “It was not a decision I took lightly but it is for the benefit of the club. The short term pain of going into admin-

istration isn’t ideal but it is needed to make sure the club survives.” A decision will be taken at next month’s AGM of the Football Conference whether or not Vics will start their Blue Square North campaign with a minus-10 points deficit. It is the second time in five years the club has been in administration. Rushe also revealed that he believed administration would not help his bid to buy the Marston’s Arena but his

£1.5m deal would be complete by June 12. He maintains that contracts have been exchanged between his consortium and ground receivers Deloitte. ■ Joel Byrom joined Stevenage Borough last week for £15,000. The goalcoring midfielder joins ex-Vics’ defender Mark Roberts and former manager Dino Maamria. Vics will receive 20% of any sell-on fee as part of the deal.

Blues seek replacement after letting Joe go APPLICATIONS have been pouring in to the Barton Stadium but Winsford United have not yet found a replacement for manager Joe Gibiliru. Gibiliru was relieved of his duties after a hastily arranged meeting last week, involving chairman Mark Loveless and secretary Bob Astles. The Blues’ new boss will be faced by a reduced budget after cuts were made in the after-

ing Vodkat Premier season. Gibiliru, who had previously promised to leave the club after two years in charge of first-team affairs, had steered United to safety after a dismal run, including just two wins in 2009, took the club to the brink of relegation. Loveless revealed that although he had received many applications, he was in no position to make a final decision. He said: “We are not ready to

Winsford United moment. We are going through all the applications and hopefully we will be ready to make an announcement by the end of next week.” Speaking after the decision to let him go, Gibiliru told the Chronicle he was “disappointed” about the way the situation was handled but gave all at the Barton Stadium some advice.

about the way it was done but these things happen in football. “I did what I had to do and made sure the club survived. “I want to say thanks to the fans and the players for everything but what I will say is that everyone needs to be United! “The board and the supporters need to work together, forget about what has happened in the past and look forward. “They need to get away from

won this and that and be as one. Mark was disappointed that he was outvoted but what’s done is done and to be fair I had planned to resign anyway so I am not too disappointed.” Gibiliru does not have any firm plans for the future but would not rule out an immediate return to football. “You never know in football but I think I will have a few weeks holiday and then look and see what is about,” he

NORTHWICH Rowing Club warmed up for their spring regatta by claiming one of the most prestigious titles in the sport. Twenty-two junior members were out in force on the River Dee competing at the famous Chester Regatta and their joint efforts saw them return to Mid Cheshire with the Junior Victor Ludorum trophy. The girls squads returned a hat-trick of victories and, coupled with every Northwich crew achieving appearances in their respective finals, the River Weaver outfit were named the top junior club on show in the Roman city. Stealing the show over the 750m course on Saturday, the junior 15 quad of Liz Bennett, Chloe Weston, Beth Wynne, Becky Jones and cox Andrew Morrison beat King’s Chester in the final. Chloe and Becky then claimed the doubles crown after putting Royal Chester to the sword. Also earning victories for Northwich were Kate Meehan and Sam Over who combined to win the junior 13 double. Club spokeswoman Rachel Hooper said: “In blustery conditions, crews continued their successful season with everyone reaching their respective finals. “While the boys crews didn’t win any of their finals, their efforts contributed to the team points and led to the eventual result of the most successful junior club of the day. “Their efforts were rewarded with the presentation of the Junior Victor Ludorum trophy. A fantastic achievement from one of the oldest regattas in the country.” Northwich host their annual regatta on Bank Holiday Monday, May 25, which will be a celebration of the club’s 125th anniversary. Entries are invited at all levels and classes from J13 to Veteran, singles to eights for highly-competitive sprint racing over 500 metres. “With the success the club has had this season so far it looks to be an exciting club event once again,” added Hooper.
