SEX SHOCK STRANGLER Lodger choked landlady after ‘rude awakening’

A FORMER Barnton man has denied murdering his St Ives landlady after having sex with her.

Tyrone Bates, 33, is on trial at Truro Crown Court accused of murdering 50-year-old Stella Gleadall in November 2007. Prosecutor Peter Blair told the jury of 10 women and two men that Bates, a former Barnton Primary and Hartford High School pupil, would claim he was guilty of manslaughter by reason of provocation. “But it was done in anger, deliberately,” claimed the QC. Mrs Gleadall, a mother-of-three who was separated from her husband Ian of 25 years, was found dead in her home after a phone call from Bates. He told police: “I killed my landlady last night. I think she drugged my drink. I woke up with her on top of me and I freaked out. She said if I told anyone, she’d tell the police I’d raped her. I panicked and strangled her.” A pathologist found 32 injuries on her body. Apart from ligature marks on her neck, she had abrasions and bruising around her arm, legs, feet, upper chest and head. There was also bruising within her body. “It’s all evidence of her having been involved in a struggle and her face being held down while being strangled,” said the prosecutor. “Her hands were not injured and her fingernails were intact. There were no fresh injuries on Bates at all. We say it was a quite one-sided split-second attack and he carried on until she was limp and lifeless.” Mr Blair said Mrs Gleadall had been out drinking with a friend the night before she died and she was “merry but not drunk” when they parted. Witnesses told the jury that Bates, who worked at the Sazbah Bar in St Ives and was also a musician, was anxious to leave his lodgings because of Mrs Gleadall’s on-off relationship with Rick Wilson, an alcoholic busker. Mr Wilson told the court he and Mrs Gleadall had “a beautiful sex life – it could have been eight times a day.” The case continues.

ACCUSED: Barnton man Tyrone Bates, 33, is on trial for the murder of his landlady in the Cornish seaside town of St Ives.

Raid nets illegal tobacco SMUGGLED cigarettes and tobacco valued at more than £10,000 were discovered after a raid at the home of a 62-year-old woman in Winsford. About £1,300 in cash, £2,000 worth of copied DVDs and 1,200 counterfeit cigarettes were also found at the property on Grampian Way after a joint operation between Cheshire Trading Standards, Cheshire Constabulary and HM Revenue & Customs on Thursday. A house on Arkwright Close was also targeted by officers from all three organisations and a small quantity of illegally imported tobacco was confiscated. A spokeswoman for Trading Standards said no one was arrested and the householder from Grampian Way will be ‘invited’ for an interview in due course. Insp Dave Snasdell, head of Winsford Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: “The success of these warrants sends out a strong message that those who involve themselves in illegal activities such as this will be discovered and prosecuted. “We detect these crimes by adopting an inter-agency approach, working closely with Trading Standards and Customs officials to monitor activity and intelligence we receive. “Others who indirectly support such activity by buying items such as tobacco from non-reputable sources should be warned that as well as supporting criminality, they could be committing criminal offences themselves. “We urge anyone in the community who has any information about activities such as this to contact police or Trading Standards.”

NORTHWICH accountancy firm Howard Worth is hosting a seminar on the regulations surrounding the provision of long term care for the elderly. Partner Richard Barnett said: “The cost of long term care has doubled over the last five years with the average cost now exceeding £29,600 per year. More than 70,000 people are forced to sell their family homes each year to meet these fees and thousands are left without any inheritance to pass to their family. “With proper planning it is often possible to protect some or all the value of your home but the key is to act early.” The seminar takes place at the firm’s office on Gadbrook Park, Rudheath on April 9. TOOTH FAIRIES: A scientist carries out the process of extracting stem cells from a baby tooth. MOTHERS of toddlers in Mid Cheshire are being encouraged to harvest stem cells from baby teeth as a family medical insurance policy.

For a hefty £950 fee, Bio- EDEN will store away the soft pulp which it says has a host of medical applications. The company, based in Daresbury near Warrington, utilizes the soft pulp which can be used to fight conditions including Alzheimer’s, juvenile diabetes and MS. Cells can also potentially be used to help close relatives of the child. Playgroups across Cheshire have

By Selina O’Donnell been approached by the company eager to sign mums up. Recruits are sent a collection kit of storage containers and cooling packs. As soon as the tooth falls out, the parent is instructed to store it in a container of fresh milk in the fridge before arranging collection. BioEDEN sales manager Vanessa Weeks said: “The process is simple and easy, it is non-invasive and allows you to use something that is normally discarded.” Mrs Weeks says ethical issues sur-

rounding embryonic stem cell research are irrelevant in the non-invasive procedure. “The mums are wowed by the possibilities,” said Mrs Weeks, who is eager to spread the word. Once the cells are collected they are stored at Daresbury site and another site. Mrs Weeks added: “It means that, in the unlikely event of a major physical threat at our lab, there will still be another sample available.” To find out more about the potential medical benefits, contact BioEDEN on 01925 607351 or email info@bioeden. co.uk

They revealed the statistics as part of their support for the annual No Smoking Day recently. The service aimed to highlight how vital it is that smokers understand how dangerous smoking at home can be for their family and those they live with. Phil Hales, area manager for community safety, said: “We are urging smokers either to kick the habit altogether, or ensure they always extinguish their cigarettes properly, especially last thing at night.”

Murder suspect says friend admitted assault ONE of the three men on trial for the murder of Jock Straiton insists he didn’t go “anywhere near” the dad-oftwo on the night he was attacked.

‘IT WASN’T ME’: Accused Paul Blower.

Paul Blower repeatedly told police he didn’t touch the 59-year-old – and he didn’t see who had attacked him outside his home near the corner of Park Road, Winnington. He said his co-defendant Joshua Spruce, also 20, had rang him and admitted he’d “done him in” along with 20-year-old Nigel Goolding, who is also accused of murder. Blower said Spruce told him: “Me and Nige knocked him out, he came out at me with a hammer.” The jury at the murder trial at Chester Crown Court on Monday heard transcripts of the interviews given by Blower, of Chapel Lane, Wincham.

‘I wasn’t near grandad at time of attack’

He said he was walking away from Sandybank Flats on Park Road after a row erupted between residents and the three friends over the noise they were making in the early hours of July 26. Blower, who admitted taking cocaine earlier in the evening, said he was walking up the hill and was on the phone to his sister when he heard “a load of screaming and commotion” – and turned round to see two men scuffling. As he approached the fracas he noticed

Finance chief’s warning over interest rates

How the new authority will spend £208m

THE review of local government in Cheshire West and Chester is good news for council taxpayers. The new council is being recommended to agree an increase in its share of council tax bills in the district of just 0.88%. The figure for an average band D property will be £1,224.04 before police, fire and parish council precepts are added in. This follows successful efforts by the incoming authority to meet a selfimposed overall target of 3% and moves by finance supremo Cllr Les Ford to even out council tax levels across the districts covered by the new council. These have led to the less than 1% increase proposed.

NO END to the uncertainty in world markets is seen by the top finance officer in the incoming Cheshire West Council. Director of resources Julie Gill said: “Conditions in the world's money and capital markets are very uncertain. This uncertainty has prevailed for a number of months now and is likely to prevail for a long while yet.” With the council's cash balances, estimated at £140m, due to be invested on a temporary basis until they are needed, she believes the rate of interest they will earn will only be between 1% and 2% although a “a high degree of caution” needs to be exercised.

SERVICES for the new Cheshire West Council will cost almost £208m in the new financial year. Resources director Julie Gill said adult social care and health will eat up more than £70m. Environmental services, which include waste management, highways and transportation and development control, will cost £48m and children’s services nearly £33m. Regeneration and cultural services, wich also covers recreation, strategic housing and regional planning guidance, are estimated at just over £18m while the authority's resources department, including finance, legal services, human resources, procurement and facilities and assets management, will spend £17.6m.

Tourism cash boost

CHESHIRE will get a share of £2m to further promote the region as a business tourism destination. The funding, announced by the North West Regional Development Agency, will go towards a number of North West-wide initiatives. The investment, to be channelled through the region’s five tourist boards, will also be used to identify new business opportunities, bid for major international conferences, improve current marketing and monitor the region’s performance.

taxi driver Mr Straiton lying face down and making “gargling” noises. “He was unconscious, just laying there,” he told police. “I didn’t see how he got hit and I didn’t see who hit him,” Blower continued. “I’m 110% sure I didn’t see that man get hit, that’s the god’s honest truth. I wish I had so I could tell you. “Everyone’s got a different story, it’s all muddled up. But I know it wasn’t me.” Blower said he couldn’t tell whether the initial “scuffle” he had witnessed was Spruce and Mr Straiton, or Goolding pulling Spruce off of the victim after he had been knocked to the floor. In his second statement Blower told police: “Them two (Goolding and Spruce) must have kicked him hard. All I know is I didn’t touch him.” The trial continues

Silver lining for council tax payers

ROAD signs are being erected to warn motorcyclists of the dangers of speeding along seven routes in Cheshire. The roads have been identified as having some of the poorest records of motorcycle safety in the county. On average each year 300 motorcyclists are injured in collisions on the county’s road network and the county council has joined the Shiny Side Up partnership, a nationwide initiative. Its aim is to target motorcyclists and challenge them to think about their actions on the road. Signs will be highly visible and will feature provocative slogans such as Bends dead ahead? and To die for ....?

The government has introduced the Window Energy Ratings scheme. By using the same ratings system that items such as fridges and washing machines have been using for years, it is now possible to rate a window from any given installer. The finished window combination is independently tested, and awarded a rating from A to G. Those offering a C-rating or above have achieved the recommended threshold for energy saving as quoted by the Energy Saving Trust.

So, if C-rated is energy efficient, how much better does an A-rated window perform?

Well, its simple really. An A-rated window will not lose any heat whatsoever from your home. None. Zero. It’s a little more complex than that, but the principle really is true.

WHAT’S YOUR FLAVOUR? Vicky Howard wants the people of Northwich to support her in the Walkers Do us a Flavour campaign, which could win her £50,000. IC120309crisps-007

FORMER Leftwich County High School pupil Vicky Howard is hoping she can count on the support of her home town in her quest to win £50,000 from crisps company Walkers. The 21-year-old is in line for the windfall if her creation, Crispy Duck & Hoisin, wins a text vote in the nationwide Do us a Flavour competition. Vicky, from Antrobus, took her campaign for votes to Sainsbury’s on Thursday, and helped raise money for charity. Walkers are donating a percentage of money spent on the crisps to the Comic Relief. If successful, Victoria will also pick up 1% of future sales of her flavour. Members of the public can vote for her up until May 1.

TWO men needed hospital treatment, one with a broken arm, after a vicious assault in Winsford in broad daylight. The victims, 24 and 28, were attacked by a group of up to seven men armed with batons and bars at about 3.15pm on Thursday afternoon. Both were taken to Leighton Hospital.

Probation gold star MAGISTRATES have given a pat on the back to probation officers in Northwich for their work in court and in supervising offenders. A survey by the Cheshire Probation Area shows 98% of magistrates are satisfied with the work of local probation staff. The praise comes hot on the heels of news that Cheshire is the highest performing area across England and Wales when it comes to dealing with offenders who fail to comply with community orders.

Teenage kicks are so hard to beat JUSTWilliam The musings of a middle-aged man from Middle England I FIND it difficult to believe that in 12 months I shall be 64. I have no idea where the time went but I do know I wasted a hell of a lot of it. Over the last few years I have tried to make up for that wasted time but it is simply not possible. There is no time now to do all the things I want to do, I am far too old. If I had put the effort in when I was younger I would have had the time to do anything I wanted. But, to be honest, I was simply too lazy. Even in sport I did things far too late. I only started playing rugby at Winnington Park when I was 35, far too late to become anything but a minor player. I’m not sure I would have been any good if I had started earlier, but I will never know now. And that’s what hurts – not knowing. When we fail after giving it our best shot we at least learn our limitations. But when we don’t even try we learn nothing. That was why I challenged myself to get a BA at the ripe old age of 55. It was hard. I had to do some daft things like sleeping in the back of my car. Had I put in the effort when I was younger I might have spent some nights sleeping in weirder places after a night on the tiles, but at least it would have had an element of fun in it. I promise you, there is no fun in sleeping in a car, especially at the age of 56! I work as a teaching assistant in a local school now and I love it, but I could have been a real teacher if I had put in just a little effort when I was younger. That is why I say to the youngsters at the school, and any youngster reading this, challenge yourselves NOW, not when you are in your 50s. If you do it now you will have time to reap the rewards of any successes you may have. If you fail at least you will have nothing to regret in later life. And you won’t have a bad back.

Cup fans face travel misery

I’VE been contacted by constituents very concerned about the FA’s decision to schedule the FA Cup Semi Final between Everton and Manchester United on Sunday, April 18, at 4pm. Thousands of fans from both clubs will have to make their way home to the North West on Sunday evening so that they can go about their normal business on Monday. The roads and the railways going to the North West will be swamped with fans. There will be inevitable delays in getting home. The logical way to have scheduled the two semi-finals would have been to play the Everton and Manchester United game on Saturday giving fans Saturday evening or Sunday to get home to the North West. The Arsenal and Chelsea game should be played on the Sunday because, in the main, the fans from both clubs will only have to travel across London . I’ve written to FA chairman Lord Triesman asking the FA to reconsider this matter and put the interests of the fans first. After all, it is the fans who pay the money to watch the games and make a considerable contribution to keeping the game going. MIKE HALL MP for Weaver Vale

Does anybody know artist?

Put a stop to obscene European gravy train WE’VE all heard how some members of the European Parliament have abused the expenses system - and now they are all due to accept a massive pay increase in June. It merely highlights the need for people to take an interest in the Euro elections in June. However boring some people feel they are, they are still important! I’d urge any voter to reject ANY of the candidates for election to the EU parliament who intends to accept the £10,000 pay increase in June. How can any candidate expect support from voters when, in the middle of a recession, they are happy to pocket such an obscene pay increase? Most households are struggling to pay their bills with less money and in may cases the threat of losing their job. I note from the website of a long-standing Euro MP that he contributes £825 a month to a Euro pension scheme which is matched by a contribution of twice that amount by the taxpayer. So a lump sum of £19,800 is being placed annually by taxpayers in a pension fund for him and any other MEPs who belong to the scheme. That is more than the annual net pay

The monogram on the painting is ‘M.E.W.’ I wonder if any of readers have information relating to the artist and/or to the sitter? I’d be very grateful if anyone could help with any information. BILL JENKINS 14 Lower Hill Street, Hakin, Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire SA73 3LR Tel: 01646 698447

Fuel poverty for cancer patients

I RECENTLY bought a wonderful watercolour portrait of a young, blonde-haired girl aged about three. Judging from the style of hair and dress etc, I think it was painted in the 1930s or 40s. The seller tells me that it came from a house clearance in the Northwich area and may have been painted by either a Cheshire vicar who died at a relatively young age or by the architect who designed Southport Marks and Spencer.

I’M writing to support Macmillan Cancer Support’s campaign to freeze out fuel poverty for cancer patients. Rising fuel prices have affected many of us, but for cancer patients the effects can be even more keenly felt. Spending longer periods at home during recovery is just one of the reasons cancer patients have increased energy needs. Coupled with the effects of the treatment itself this means that cold really is colder with cancer. In a recent Macmillan survey, two thirds of cancer patients struggling financially said paying fuel bills is their biggest money worry. Cancer patients face higher

FLAGGING SUPPORT: Flags of the European Union. of a great many people who have to pay energy bills, rent or mortgages etc. I contrast this very generous scheme with the way politicians have treated contributions to the post office workers’ pension scheme. One the taxpayer can afford, the other is too much. What a difference. It really is time there was greater clar-

bills at a time when their income has often decreased. Nobody with cancer should be left in the cold this winter because they can’t afford to heat their home. Macmillan is urging the Government to extend the winter fuel payment to cancer patients. This annual payment is currently paid to everyone over 60, but could bring immediate help to cancer patients struggling with additional fuel costs. If you’re struggling to cope with the financial effects of cancer, visit www.macmillan.org.uk or call 0800 500 800. VANESSA TROAKE Wirral

Saddle up for autism

I’VE travelled thousands of miles across Europe during my cycling career but if you fancy experiencing Europe by bike, why not sign up for one of rides offered by the National Autistic Society (NAS). The London to Paris Bike Ride (May 15-18) is a hugely popular four-day ride from Crystal Palace to the foot of the Eiffel Tower. For cyclists who want a bit more of a challenge the Five Countries Bike Ride (5-8 June 2009) is a 300 mile three-day ride through five European countries! By taking part in either of these bike rides, and raising funds for the NAS, you’ll be helping the over half a million people in the UK with autism. Tinnitus focus

I’M highlighting the vital work of the British Tinnitus Association and shed a light on the unseen suffering that people with the condition experience. One of the common problems sufferers mention is how much their condition affects them at night. Almost 65% of sufferers say their tinnitus is worst at night. Most people find quiet helps them sleep but tinnitus sufferers experience the opposite. Their tinnitus noise becomes much more noticeable and they then become more alert and agitated, which in turn stops them from sleeping. This takes its toll. Serious sleep deprivation makes people miserable and, over time, more prone to illness. Sufferers can call the BTA on 0800 018 0527 or visit www.tinnitus.org.uk. There’s help out there! There’s a small numbut not an address. held on the police database. Figures released under the Freedom of Information Act show 2,001 10 to 15-year-olds and 3,303 youths aged 16 and 17 have been swabbed by Cheshire Police. More than 20,000 18-24 year olds have also had samples taken. The database includes people who have been arrested but not charged, those who have volunteered their DNA to eliminate themselves from enquiries and DNA taken at crime scenes. A sample is usually taken by brushing the inside of the mouth with a cotton swab, although hair samples may be taken instead. The National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) say about 13.3% are replicates where multiple samples are taken from the same subject.

Gavin McKinnon, head of secretariat at the NPIA, argues there’s no disadvantage to being on the database and inclusion does not signify a criminal record. Before 2001, police had to destroy DNA samples when charges were dropped or not proceeded with. But in 2003, police were given permission to keep DNA from anyone arrested for a recordable offence and detained in a police station. Now many may be wiped from the database after the European Court of Human Rights ruled in December the DNA of all innocent people must be removed. Shortly after, the Home Secretary ordered that the DNA of under 10s be erased. PC Andrew Fielding said: “DNA

ber of offences, such as littering or parking offences, where we don’t take DNA. “If your DNA is requested as a witness for elimination purposes, we’re obliged to destroy it when the case is finished.” While 5.2% of the UK population is on the database, the 86,884 samples taken by Cheshire Constabulary represent nearly 9% of its one million population. An NSPCC spokeswoman said: “It’s unethical to collect and store DNA from any child or young person – whether or not they have committed an offence.” “Strong measures for maintaining confidentiality and data control are needed to ensure children are protected from harm and abuse and that their right to privacy is respected.”

COMBERBACH Memorial Hall will host a police surgery from 11am-1pm on Saturday. Residents are welcome to drop in and talk to PC Emily Taylor about a issues in the area. ■ To contact PC Taylor, call 0845 4580000.

A HERITAGE tour to the Wedgwood Museum in the Potteries is being organised by Northwich group DAN on Saturday. Opened in October 2008 at a cost of £10.5m, the centre, near Stokeon-Trent, is home to one of the most interesting ceramic collections in the world. The galleries tell the story of Josiah Wedgwood, his family, and the world-famous company he founded two-and-ahalf centuries ago. The visitor centre provides an opportunity to see how the pottery is created at close quarters. The museum’s theatre helps explain the rise of Wedgwood with a film on the history of the firm. The coach leaves at 9am from Northwich Memorial Hall and tickets are £14 from Nick Hughes on 01606 41597.

Estate set for new era THE creation of a brand new parish for the Kingsmead estate and surrounding area will be rubber-stamped by Vale Royal Borough Council tomorrow. The full council meets at its Wyvern House HQ in Winsford on Thursday, March 19, when the establishment of the new authority will be given the green light. At the moment about two thirds of Kingsmead lies within Davenham parish, with the remaining third in Northwich. In a consultative survey carried out by the borough council residents voted overwhelmingly in favour of Kingsmead taking control of its own affairs. About 85% of respondents supported the idea of creating Kingsmead Parish Council, which will come to fruition in 2011. Davenham Parish Council and shad-

ALMOST TIME: Kingsmead Parish Council, which will come into being in 2011, will be officially created by borough bosses tomorrow. Inset: Davenham Parish Councillor Arthur Wood and Northwich Town Council chief executive Steve Sharman.

ow Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) have both backed the plan, which was first mooted by Vale Royal. But Northwich Town Council is reluctant to cede the territory and opposed the plans last summer. Chief executive Steve Sharman said he felt Kingsmead would be better served as part of Northwich. “We have Quality Council status and have proved we can run an area of that size. I think there will be a lot of complaints once it’s finalised.” Vale Royal Borough and Davenham Parish Cllr Arthur Wood is one of a number of councillors backing the proposal. He claims the new body would ‘fulfil very adequately’ the community aspirations in both Davenham and Kingsmead. The new council’s main roles will involve speaking on behalf of the parish electorate and improving services and general quality of life.

EU rural funding to continue RURAL Cheshire will continue to reap the rewards of European rural funding despite changes in local government. The new Cheshire West Council will administer the Rural Development Programme which delivers business, environmental and community projects. Programme manager David Boyce says the local economy gains considerably more than by the cash injected when match-funding is thrown into the mix.

Funding worth £1.85m is available which, match-funded, becomes worth £3.8m. Two types of funding are available. One aims to improve the competitiveness of agriculture and forestry by providing businesses with extra support. The other aims to improve the quality of life in rural areas by, for example, working with village hall committees to manage facilities better. ■ To find out more contact David Boyce on 01244 402229.

THE search is on for the longest standing Cheshire customers of the Co-operative Insurance as the home and motor insurer looks to roll back the years. The competition, which will run from now until April 14, will see the company scour the region for customers who have remained loyal to the company and decided to renew their home or motor insurance year after year. The winner, who will be judged on the length of continuous loyalty, will receive the next renewal premium at the same level of premium they paid when the policy was originally taken out. WALKER CLARE ELIZABETH

NEWSFile Safety shocker

MORE than 40% of Cheshire building sites have been accused of putting workers’ lives in danger after failing safety inspections. Health and Safety inspectors issued enforcement notices to 28 of the 66 construction sites they visited in Cheshire during a two-day inspection initiative. Unsafe work at height was to blame for 14 of the notices and the others dealt with the welfare of workers, equipment, electrics and the general state of sites. Wayne Crumpton, HSE principal inspector for Cheshire, said: “It’s extremely disappointing that very basic health and safety precautions were not in place on more than 40% of the construction sites we visited in Cheshire. We’ll continue to carry out similar inspections across the county throughout the rest of the month. “Employers are putting the lives of their workers in danger by not using health and safety systems and we’re coming down hard on those who ignore the rules.”

Caravan park in pipeline

THE LUCK OF THE IRISH

Enter in-centre now!

SHORT STAY: Land off Chester Road in Sandiway, near Blakemere Craft Centre, could soon become home to touring caravans if the borough council approves plans. ARCHITECTS have submitted plans for a 58-pitch caravan site off Chester Road in Sandiway. Tarvin-based John Beeston & Associates want to create the park and an office, shop and toilet block on land to the north of Barry's Wood. But Vale Royal Borough Council’s head of planning, Richard Ellison, said the proposed site is for touring caravans and holidaymakers and

will not be a temporary home for itinerants. Council chiefs last year suggested five possible sites across Vale Royal for between 17 and 23 permanent pitches for Travellers, in line with a government directive. Four of the five, including one off Chester Road, were dismissed after a public backlash. A camp at the north end of New Road in Winsford now appears a strong possibility.

“It’s not the same site that was proposed for Gypsies and Travellers, it’s not for that,” said Mr Ellison. “And it’s not the same site, it’s nowhere near the other site.” He added: “Normally length of stay is an issue and we would prevent permanent residential occupation of the site.” The plans will be considered by borough planning bosses in the next seven days.

NEW LOOK: An artist’s impression of what the transformation of Town Park in Winsford could look like.

AN EXHIBITION of proposals to give Winsford a flagship waterfront will go on public display on Saturday. The designs will be on show at Winsford Cross Shopping Centre from 9.30am-1pm and include a series of plans to transform the waterfront and Town Park through reclaiming derelict land, creating new housing and commercial developments and establishing new leisure routes for walkers and cyclists. A Winsford Waterfront regeneration strategy was approved by Vale Royal Borough Council in July 2008 and is being progressed by Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC), which is consulting on a draft development brief during March and April. It will now form part of the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power, now in its second year. It means that over the weekend of July 18-19, Cholmondeley will be bustling with spectacular sights and sounds. The Last Night of the Proms-style concert has long been a big part of the Cheshire calendar with the

Manchester Camerata Orchestra and conductor Tim Redmond creating an amazing atmosphere, helped with fireworks and special effects from the castle ramparts. This year it will round off the first day of motorsport, powerboat racing and aerial displays that make up the Pageant of Power. Event director James Hall said: “Now that we’re holding the fireworks concert on the Saturday evening of the Pageant of Power, the whole weekend will take on the atmosphere of a festival. “With all the military activity that will be taking place at the pageant, the Cholmondeley family decided the

concert should take on the characteristics of a tattoo. “Tanks, artillery and helicopters will be displaying during the day and in the evening we will have marching bands, pipes and drums, last post, a piper on the castle roof and real cannon fire accompanying the 1812 Overture. “I can’t wait.” The organisers have joined forces with the Army Benevolent Fund, the event’s chosen charity. ■ For details and discounted tickets from £13.50 call 01829 772430 or visit www.pageantofpower.com or www.cholmondeleyfireworks.com.

THE bleak story of ‘Saskia’ and her spiral down into prostitution was the grim subject matter for debutant playwright Will Butters. The dark tale was premiered at Davenham Players Theatre last week – and newcomer Will has clearly found a new artistic direction. Up until recently, he was an active musician, having spent almost 40 years as a solo artist and a member of various bands. All that changed on April Fool’s day in 2005 when a serious stroke left him unable to sing and with mobility problems. In Saskia, the audience was transported into the life of a young, single mother and struggling to provide for her baby. Her problems escalate as she strives to pay off a loan shark. She descends from petty crime to prostitution. The story ends tragically. Will’s inspiration is drawn from the real-life situations of many poverty-stricken women. He intentionally provokes concern for the down-trodden rather than condemnation. It’s a thought-provoking work and a successful step from anonymity to a playwright of talent and potential.

RAW: Random Acts of Wildness bring their debut show to the Harlequin Theatre on Saturday, March 21. A FLEDGLING theatre company from Liverpool will be bringing their raw talent to Northwich’s award-winning Harlequin Theatre this weekend. Random Acts of Wildness (RAW) visit the Queen Street theatre with their debut show, Legless 'n' Harmless on Saturday night. The fun-loving group, which describes itself as a ‘clown-based physical theatre company’, was formed in 2007 and consists of Aiden Lee (Death Breath) Brooks and

Graham Geoffrey (Fat Dog Head) Hicks. Legless ’n’ Harmless, brought to the Harlequin by culture group DAN (Development of the Arts in Northwich), is a comic tour de force with the modest aim of making you laugh. The story follows the struggle of two men, Alan and Alan. One has no use of his arms and the other has no use of his legs, and they live, breathe, eat and sleep together every day of their lives.

DAN spokesman Nick Hughes said: “Watch them with a judgemental eye as they scheme and plot to get out of doing the washing up, and laugh heartily at how childish the ‘play’ becomes. “And leave at the end with the comforting knowledge that two such idiots can only exist in theatre.” ■ Tickets are available from Nick Hughes in the DAN office at Northwich Library, or by phoning 01606 41597.

Resurgent Witton on the up after victory WITTON Albion continued their climb up the UniBond Premier table after an impressive home win over play-off chasing North Ferriby United on Saturday. The 2-1 victory moved Albion up to 14th in the league and six points ahead of the first relegation spot, currently occupied by Boston United. It marks a remarkable turnaround for Witton and their manager Gary Finley who has taken his side from the bottom of the league in January to midtable in three months. Finley was delighted with his team’s performance at Wincham Park against North Ferriby and says that Witton are now a match for anybody in the division. “Confidence is a big thing,” he said. “Our performances at Bradford, Marine, Eastwood and now North Ferriby, it proves that our players should have no fear. No matter who we play, they know they are going to be in for a game. “The players have done ever so well and we couldn’t ask for more really. We just need to keep distancing ourselves from the relegation zone but we cannot relax.” On Saturday, Witton survived a late scare as, leading 2-1, the referee ruled out a late header from United skipper Paul Foot, which led to an onfield confrontation between the match official and the United management. Witton took the lead on 26 minutes thanks to a John Lawless penalty but the Yorkshire visitors were level 11 minutes later when Foot scored from close range. After the break, North Ferriby’s Kevin Larvin was sent off while seven visiting players were also cautioned. And seven minutes from time, Witton made the visitors pay as Kieran Lugsden met Brad Maylett’s cross to send the 245-crowd home happy.

Vodkat League WINSFORD United’s disastrous run of results in 2009 continued on Saturday with a disappointing home defeat to Ashton Athletic. The Blues, playing in front of just 72 supporters at the Barton Stadium, had taken the lead against the visitors through David Barnes just after half-time. But “two minutes of madness” left Winsford 2-1 down after a free kick and an opportunist strike from Joe Fielding handed Athletic the points. Boss Joe Gibiliru was left frustrated by the defeat that leaves the Blues just seven points above the Vodkat Premier relegation places in 18th position. “I was very disappointed, we were winning 1-0 but then two minutes of madness has cost us,” said Gibiliru. “One goal was scored from a free kick and then a basic goalkeeping error has handed them the lead. It was just not what we needed.” “I was getting ready to bring on two strikers to kill off the game just as it happened. “We dominated for large parts of the game but we are just not getting the luck.” ■ Turn to the back page for news of Gibiliru’s swoop for five new signings as he battles to halt the slump.

ON TARGET: Kieran Lugsden scored Witton’s winner against North Ferriby United on Saturday. RS060908Witton-007 This Saturday, Witton face a tough clash when they visit third-from-bottom Matlock Town (3pm).

Finley added: “There are all important games and the Matlock fixture is no different.”

Northwich Vics - Blue Square Premier

Preece: It’s all about winning NORTHWICH Vics went into last night’s crucial cross-border clash with Wrexham on the back of a tough 4-1 defeat at promotion-hunting Cambridge United. Despite showing resilience and scoring on 35 minutes thanks to a superb Luke Joyce strike on debut, Vics went down to goals from Chris Holroyd, Scott Rendell (2) and Andy Parkinson. Manager Andy Preece had no complaints after the defeat at the Trade Recruitment Stadium. “Having watched the game back, we weathered the storm

said that with a dozen games to go, only wins will do. “In the position we are in, we have to start winning whether the opposition are at the top, middle, or bottom of the league,” he added. Preece was hoping for a bumper crowd to turn up at the Marston’s Arena last night as promotion-chasing Wrexham visited Vics in a vital league clash.

but two errors have cost us dear. “We matched them for much of the game but in the end Cambridge, who

Points are vital for Barnton Cheshire League BARNTON resume their battle to avoid the drop from Cheshire League Division One on Saturday with the weight of the division upon them. The Townfield Lane outfit, who defeated Lostock Gralam Reserves 4-0 in the Mid Cheshire FA Saturday Cup semi-final on Saturday, saw relegation rivals Linotype/Cheadle pick up a surprise 3-1 win over fifth-placed Styal lifiting them above Barnton. This Saturday, Mick Duckett’s men face a crucial clash as 11th-placed Billinge are the visitors (3pm). Duckett said: “All our rivals have got games in hand and they all won so we have got to win on Saturday. If we don’t then it’s looking pretty dire. “We have got six games left so if we are going to stay up then we have got to get a result.” ■ Lostock Gralam did not enjoy their break from Cheshire League Division Two action at the weekend. Park battle hard but Wirral prove too tough WINNINGTON Park failed to pull off a hat-trick of victories in Cheshire and South Lancs One after visitors Wirral proved too strong. A full-strength Park side, buoyed by the return of kicker Ben Elliot and second row Ian Moriarty, started well at a windy Burrows Hill but had just an Elliot penalty to show for their efforts

as the Merseyside visitors went into the break 8-3 in front. Playing into the wind Park took the game to third-placed Wirral and deservedly drew level after hooker Matt Dodds intercepted a pass and sprinted upfield before finding the supporting Elliot who outpaced the defence to score a great try.

But that was the end of the scoring exploits for the hosts who were made to pay for some indiscipline and missed tackles as Wirral ran in three converted tries to complete the 29-8 victory. Park can now enjoy a week off before crucial league encounters with Dukinfield, Wigan and Isle of Man-based

Vagabonds. Skipper Mark Patterson said: “Three wins would help finish the season on a high and, considering the tough times the club has had to endure, 12 points would be a respectable finish.” Other scores: Broughton Park 3rds 22 WP 2nds 20; Liverpool St Helens 3rds 25 WP Vags 0.

Depleted Blacks lose out at Lymm pushovers and to be fair we struggled a bit in the scrum. “We are looking at next season now and really targeting the forwards. We know that we will need to beef up the pack if we want to compete at the top of this league.” This Saturday, Northwich visit Cheshire and South Lancs hopefuls Wirral (3pm) in their Cheshire Vase semi-final tie. They will still be able to select Aussie centre Stacey Hosking who will be subject to a disciplinary panel meeting next week, after he was sent off in last week’s home win over Liverpool St Helens. Other scores: Northwich U15s 45 Macclesfield U15s (tries: Sheppard, Collier, Kitt, Beesley, Byrne, Vandersteen, Barlow; cons: Sheppard (4),Vandersteen.

ATHLETICS: An impressive number of Vale Royal athletes have been selected to represent Cheshire in the English Schools Cross County Championships at Castle Donnington this weekend. Eighteen and a further six reserves will make the journey from Mid Cheshire to Leicestershire for the showcase schools event to pull on a county vest as part of the squad of 48. Vale Royal coach Sean McGrath said: “Out of 48, it’s a very high proportion of the squad. Warrington are sending 14 so with our 18, there are not many representing Cheshire from the rest of the county. “It a very difficult competition but we are hoping that perhaps Rebecca Craigie and Megan Huxley will be challenging for honours.” Athletes finishing in the top eight in the Year 8/9 and Year 10/11 races will be selected to represent England Schools at the international fixture against the home nations at Bangor, Wales on Saturday, March 28.

Wasteful Winnington throw away vital lead WINNINGTON Park’s battle for Northern League Division Two West survival continued on Saturday as visitors Bramhall stole a share of the spoils. Park, who are locked with three other teams on 22 points in the battle to avoid the drop and the point taken from their clash at Sir John Deane’s will seen in the light of the one that got away.

Park had a 2-0 lead going into the final ten minutes thanks to strikes from Steve Campagnaro and Peter Evans. But with the game seemingly in the bag, Park lost concentration and conceded twice, the final goal being scored with just two minutes to go. ■ In contrast to Park’s first-team’s survival scrap, the second team clinched

the Kukri North West Division Five South title on Saturday thanks to a comprehensive 10-2 victory over Rhyl and District 2nds. Four goals from Simon Livingstone were complemented by single efforts from Simon Pinson, John Stackhouse, Jeff Dodd, James Charlton and Mike Dodd to complete the rout and spark

wild celebrations. The 2nds continued their form by claiming an 8-3 victory over Wrexham 2nds (Charlton 2, M Dodd, Lavin, Pinson 3, Stackhouse). Other scores: Oxton 5ths 0 Park 3rds 2. Winnington host Didsbury Northern (2pm) on Saturday and the 2nds take on Crewe Vagrants 2nds (12.30pm).

Super seconds are simply the best CHAMPIONS: Winnington Park 2nds have won North West Division Five South.

SWIMMING: An inspirational performance from Winsford SC’s Harriet Milne at the DSE (Disability Sports Events) National Junior Championships at Sheffield earned praise from club officials. The 17-year-old, representing the North West, competed in the 50m butterfly, 100m & 400m freestyle, the 100m individual medley and the 400m medley relay. Harriet, from Kingsley, recorded six personal best times in the individual events and brought home six silver medals. Coach David Pettengell SILVER said: “I was extremely pleased and proud of SUCCESS: Harriet in the way she Harriet Milne. approached these championships. She was positive and focused on what she wanted to achieve, she set about her task of competing to compete and as her results showed that with determination and believe, anything is possible.” Club spokesman Brent Ion added: “We as a club are very proud of her achievements and especially her attitude to a hard training regime.” ■ Northwich Swimming Club claimed victory at the Papoose Relay gala at Woolston, Warrington on Saturday. Their overall total of 83 points was too good for rival squads from Warrington Warriors, Liverpool Penguins and St Helens.

Vale Royal’s county call

NORTHWICH came close to pulling off what would have Rugby union been a famous victory at minutes to go but we ran out of Lymm on Saturday. steam. Three of their tries were The Blacks, who had seven players missing from the November encounter which saw Northwich win 23-13, battled valiantly at Crouchley Lane but in the end were undone in the final stages to lose out 31-15. The scoreline was harsh on the visitors, who led 7-5 at half-time thanks to a Matt Bebbington try and Richard Dale conversion, and 15-12 with just a quarter of the game to go. Man of the match Chris James had kept Northwich on terms with the hosts with a powerful try and Dale had given the Blacks the lead with a well-struck penalty. But it was not to be for the under-strength Moss Farm side as Lymm’s forwards took control of the game and added three tries to clinch the North West Two points. Chairman Sam Naylor said: “We matched them until about 15

Owen reels in final win

ANGLING: Barry Owen claimed victory in the final match of Barnton and Frodsham AC’s season. His all-roach net of 8-8-0 was enough to win the Saturday fixture on Heesom’s Pool ahead of Dave Blears and Steve Walker. Last Wednesday, Kenny Carter reeled in the plaudits after his 9-11-12 of skimmers and roach was enough to pip second-placed Owen and third-placed Mark Emmison. The club’s new season will begin on June 15.

Sapphires finish on top

NETBALL: Northwich Sapphires’ third team claimed an impressive victory over Lymm. Clair Worswick was the star of the show for the second-placed Sapphires as they ran out 26-15 winners over their visitors who lie just one place behind them in Warrington and District League Division Two.

BLUES SIGN FIVE IN BID TO HALT SLIDE WINSFORD United boss Football Joe Gibiliru has signed By Ben Coulbeck five players in a bid to beat the dreaded drop.

The frustrated manager has seen his side go from play-off chasers to relegation battlers following a disastrous run of results in the Vodkat Premier. The Blues are still without a league win in 2009 but Gibiliru believes his new squad can climb away from the league’s bottom two and secure their Premier status for next season. Les Miranda, a prolific goalscorer in non-league football, has returned to the Barton Stadium having left the club at the end of last season. Fans’ favourite Miranda is joined by young goalkeeper Joe Hancock, centre-half Jordan Neil, left midfielder James Hilton and Peter Hanlon. Gibiliru said: “We need goals which is why I have brought back Les but I also need someone at the other end to stop goals too. “I know I have been saying this for weeks now but it really is time to bounce back. “It’s not as if we are playing

badly, it’s just that we are making mistakes and not taking our chances which we cannot afford to do.” Last Saturday, the Blues threw away a single-goal lead and conceded two in two minutes at home to Ashton Athletic – the second goal the result of glaring error by keeper Jamie Mottershead. It was a bitter pill to swallow for the Blues and their manager, who said, before last night’s rearranged home clash with Ramsbottom United, that his team want to fight for the future of the club. “The lads came in after the game very frustrated, they were arguing with each other and blaming one another. They do care and want to turn it around,” he said. “We really need about three or four wins to make sure that we are safe and I have made a few signings who will be looking to get involved.” This Saturday, the Blues face a crucial home clash with bottom club Colne (3pm).

GUESS WHO’S BACK: Les Miranda has been re-signed by Joe Gibiliru (inset) to score the goals that could secure Winsford United’s safety.

The Grange youngsters brew up FA Cup glory School sport

PUPILS from the Grange realised every schoolboy’s dream by lifting the FA Cup. It may not have been the real competition but it mattered not to the under 13s squad that won the Independent Schools FA Cup final at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium. The Hartford school faced Alleyn’s, from London, and were roared on by 150 supporters from Mid Cheshire at the Blue Square Premier club’s ground, home of the Brewers, and they had good cause to celebrate as the Grange ran out 2-1 winners. They took the lead in the 12th minute when Oliver Walker met a cross from the left and sent a looping header in off the post. Alleyn’s soon replied but a minute into the second half, the Grange were back in front when Callum Saunders eluded his marker, rounded the keeper and passed the ball into the empty net. The Grange defence was put under sustained pressure late in the game but they held firm to secure a famous victory. Stand-out players included keeper Rory Boath, Dan Bruce and James Hayes but man-of-the-match honours went to Declan Poole. The Grange’s triumphant squad: Rory Boath, Oli Deverall, Conor Gay, James Hayes, Dan Lord, Angus Hayward, Danny Oakley, Poole, Callum Saunders, Oliver Walker (captain), Dan Bruce, Harry Pickup, James Donnelly, Jonathan Wilson, Chris Goldie, Robert Walker. Coach Dave Ridley said: “We are all absolutely thrilled to win the cup and would like to congratulate the whole under 13s team for their sterling performance.” ■ Rudheath Social Club lifted the Mid Cheshire District FA Cup on Sunday after they defeated Winsford-based The Gate. A brace from Mike Harrison and one from Stuart Tulloch completed the 3-0 victory at Winsford United’s Barton Stadium. Rudheath will be attempting to win a cup double when they take on Winsford side The Ark, at Middlewich Town’s Seddon Street ground, this Sunday (11am), in the Mid Cheshire Sunday League Cup Final.
