A TEENAGE eye witness told Chester Crown Court she saw two drunken men kicking a grandad “as if he were a football”, before leaving him lying on the pavement outside his Winnington home covered in blood. The jury of nine men and three women heard 20-year-old Joshua Spruce ‘rugby tackled’ 59-year-old Jim Straiton on Park Road, knocking him to the floor before

By Dave Goodban repeatedly kicking him with co-defendant Nigel Goolding, 20. The 16-year-old female witness – who cannot be named for legal reasons – said a third defendant, 20-year-old Paul Blower, tried to pull the pair away, telling them: “Stop it. He’s an old man.” Mr Straiton, a part-time taxi driver known as ‘Jock’, was assaulted outside

his home at Sandybank Flats in the early hours of Saturday, July 26, after a row with a group of men over the noise they were making. He died at North Staffs Hospital two weeks later. Blower, of Chapel Street, Wincham; Goolding, of Cromwell Road, Winnington, and Spruce, of Alderley Road, Winnington, all deny murder. On Monday, day five of the trial, the witness, a former girlfriend of one of the accused, said Mr Straiton came running

out of his flat towards Spruce armed with a hammer ‘like he was going to hit somebody’. “Josh Spruce rugby tackled him and Nigel Goolding came over. The man was on the floor and they were both kicking him,” she said. “It was just like he was a football. “He had blood coming from his face and there was blood on the pavement as well. He was lying on the floor snoring.” The trial continues

Thieves steal £100k of chocolate THIEVES escaped with a £100,000 bounty after targeting a hauliers’ compound in Lostock and stealing 25 tonnes of chocolate bars. Bosses at Jack Richards & Sons’ yard on Griffiths Road were left with a bitter taste in the mouth after the raid at 9.40pm on Friday. The culprits drove a tractor unit into the yard, clamped a trailer holding 25 one-ton pallets on to the back of it and fled. The empty trailer was found abandoned at the back of Winnington Avenue, near Think

Print, at about 9.30am on Saturday. Police said the boxes – some of which contained Boost, Bounty and Twirl bars – were bound for Morrison’s stores across the region. The chocolate had a retail value of about £100,000. Det Con John Carter, of Northwich Specialist Investigation Unit, was called to the compound on Friday night. He said: “The trailer had been dropped off at around 4pm that day and was due for onward transit on Saturday.” The yard where trailers are housed is visible from the main road and police believe the thieves saw the security gates had been left open and targeted the site. “The lorry has been driven straight through the gates and they’ve attached the trailer on to the back of it and driven it off,” said DC Carter. “There’s been a couple of examples of this type of theft around the country recently.” Jack Richards & Sons did not want to comment.

A WOMAN who dumped hundreds of telephone directories in the River Weaver after being paid to deliver them will be forced to scrub out graffiti across the borough as part of her punishment. Emma Louise Morton, 27, of Broomsfield Close, Winsford pleaded guilty to fly-tipping at New Bridge Locks at a hearing at Vale Royal Magistrates Court on February 20. She had been employed to deliver the directories to homes across the borough, and was ordered to serve 100

hours community service and pay £1,000 for her crime, committed on September 10. Magistrates branded it ‘a deliberate act and a serious offence to both society and the environment’. Morton will now spend 100 hours cleaning the borough as part of Vale Royal Borough Council’s Respect Action Project (RAP), run in conjunction with Cheshire Probation Services and the Vale Royal Community Safety Partnership. The initiative sees offenders remove

graffiti from public and private land and participate in other work to benefit the local community. Vale Royal Streetscene officers tracked down Morton and managed to gather sufficient information to bring a prosecution. Streetscene manager David Lennon said: “It has taken a lot of hard work to get to this stage and we have worked closely with British Waterways and Link Direct, who have been very helpful to this enquiry.”

Loan shark could lose crime cash By Dave Goodban

CONVICTED loan shark and rapist Paul Nicholson could be forced to hand over his illegally gained fortune to police – or face a longer spell in prison. The 39-year-old, who lived in a £1.4m mansion on Golf Course Road, Delamere, is already facing a lengthy jail term when he is sentenced on March 20, after being found guilty of 20 offences including blackmail, assault and rape at Warrington Crown Court last month. A Proceeds of Crime application against him is now under way to allow Cheshire Constabulary to claw back some of his ill-gotten gains. The former nightclub doorman enjoyed the trappings of criminal success with the money he extorted from vulnerable victims of his illegal money lending business. His luxury 14-acre home boasted a tennis court and stables where he housed two horses. Investigators found large wads of cash totalling around £26,000 stashed inside his home. In the driveway of the property bordering Delamere Golf Club Nicholson parked his Land Rover and Porsche Carrera.

Husband killed himself

A MARRIED man found hanging in a garage on a Winsford estate committed suicide, a coroner has ruled. Paul Dooley, a 46-year-old from Moss Bank, Winsford, was discovered on the afternoon of November 17 at a service area between Pulford Road and Brindley Avenue. At the inquest at Warrington Coroner's Court last Wednesday, coroner for Cheshire Dr Nicholas Rheinberg said Mr Dooley ‘took his own life while the balance of his mind was disturbed’.

LAP OF LUXURY: The £1.4m mansion, bought with ill-gotten gains by loan shark Paul Nicholson, inset. The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) last week revealed the convict’s pending application for a consumer credit licence has been “put on hold”. He tried to renew it in 2007, having successfully applied in 2002, before his offences came to light. An OFT spokesman said: “We will

talk to the illegal money-lending team before making a decision on his application.” Det Insp Giles Orton, who led the investigation against Nicholson, said: “Nicholson liked the feel of money. His house acted as a safe and his wealth was clear to see.”

Charity fundraiser for tragic Andrew

Art and craft skills invitation

THERE are still a handful of tickets remaining for a charity fundraiser in memory of a Winsford schoolboy who died of leukaemia. Andrew Taylor died in 2001 aged 12, and every year family friends Wendy and Paul Cain stage an event to raise money for the Anthony Nolan Trust, which looked after him. This year's event, which will be held at the Conservative Club at Ways Green, Winsford, starts at 7.45pm on Friday (March 6) and will include an auction, a raffle, a disco and a licensed bar. Tickets are £3 from Wendy or Paul on 01606 558288. Donations for the raffle will be gratefully received.

RESIDENTS in Winsford are being encouraged to try learning new art and craft skills at free workshops being organised by Weaver Vale Housing Trust. Five ‘have a go’ sessions will be held at the Greenfields Neighbourhood House, 15/17 Finsbury Walk, in March and April – giving Winsford residents the opportunity to expand their creative skills. The workshops will be held on Fridays from March 6-April 3 and will cover card-making, nail art, willow weaving, mosaics and make-up. All sessions are free and will run from 10am-12noon, with refreshments provided. For more information contact Jan Hanby on 01606 813421.

County consultation A PUBLIC consultation over the new Cheshire West & Chester and Cheshire East councils has begun. The independent Boundary Committee for England has started the first round of consultation as part of its review of local government electoral arrangements. This lasts for six weeks, ending on April 6. During this stage the committee is to decide how many councillors the new councils should have. Later in the year, it will ask for views on what areas those councillors should represent. The review will end next spring when the committee makes its final recommendations. Committee chairman Max Caller said: “Further information on electoral reviews and guidance on what sort of information the committee is looking for should be available at local authorities, in your local library, or visit www.boundarycommittee.org.uk and click on ‘about electoral reviews’.” To have your say, write to The Review Officer (Cheshire East and Cheshire West & Chester), The Boundary Committee for England, Trevelyan House 30 Great Peter Street, London SW1P 2HW or email reviews@boundarycommittee.org.uk

UP TO 100 new jobs will be created in Northwich after online retailer The Hut Group announced its acquisition of High Street chain Zavvi. The company, based at Gadbrook Park, Rudheath, revealed yesterday (Tuesday) it had taken over the retailer and its website, www.zavvi.co.uk. The deal will see the creation of about 100 jobs over the next 12 months. The revamped Zavvi website will offer a broader range of products than before, with electrical, perfume and lingerie joining the regular games, music and film offerings. Free delivery will now be a standard offer and lower prices are promised. Hartford entrepreneur Matthew Moulding, chief executive officer of The Hut Group, said: “Zavvi is a major player in entertainment retail, both in the UK and Ireland. “Our aim is to capitalise on this wellrecognised High Street brand and transform the business into a leading online retailer, not only in entertainment, but also across lifestyle products.” The Hut, co-founded in 2004 by Matthew, 36, and John Gallemore, 39, last year won £5m in funding after being named North West winner in the Sunday Times-Bank of Scotland Corporate Entrepreneur Challenge. The company anticipates sales of more than £75m in 2009, having recorded a turnover of £25m in 2008. Matthew said: “The team is excited about the opportunities this acquisition presents and the growth plans across the group will be supported by our continuing drive to add talented new members to the team across most disciplines.”

MORE than 1,000 women walkers are needed for the fifth St Luke’s Hospice Midnight Walk from Nantwich to Crewe and back on Saturday, June 20. Over the past four years the event has attracted 5,000 women, raising a total of more than £850,000 and this year places will be limited to 1,750 participants. Already more than 700 women have signed up. It will follow a 13.1-mile half-marathon course from Reaseheath College at Nantwich to the Bannatyne’s Health Club in Macon Way, Crewe and back. Event organiser Jane Thompson said: “The walk is St Luke’s major fundraiser of the year. People tend to walk for various reasons – many will have been touched by the love and care given by the hospice either as an actual patient, family member or friend of someone who has benefited by the wonderful care given at St Luke’s.

“Equally, some people will walk as a means of getting fit or for social reasons. We are delighted to welcome anyone who would like to complete the walk for whatever reason. “Our only request is that, in taking a place on the event, the walker is willing and committed to raising sponsorship. “The evening is a wonderful social event and a lot of fun but we put it together with the purpose of raising vitallyneeded funds to allow us to look after our patients and their families. Whilst some of our walkers will raise enormous amounts of money, we don’t put a minimum figure on sponsorship.” Cost of registering is £15, which covers a walk T-shirt and breakfast the next day. Forms are available from the hospice on 01606 551246 (office hours only). They can be collected from the hospice charity shops. For more details log on to www.midnightwalk.co.uk.

COURSE INFORMATION EVENT Saturday 7th March

By Dave Goodban

A STAUNCH campaigner has cranked up his one-man protest against the Northwich GPs’ surgery he blames for his wife’s deteriorating health. Ivan Blacka has camped outside Firdale Medical Centre with his growing collection of home-made placards “three or four times a week” since The Chronicle first reported his fight with the health authorities in early January. The 53-year-old, of Navigation Road, is furious about the way his wife has been ‘let down’ by NHS staff, and blames staff at the Firdale Road surgery for ‘fobbing off’ his wife for three years. Mr Blacka claims his peaceful protesting, which has seen police called out six times but without taking action, has finally got him noticed. And he wants other dissatisfied patients to follow his lead. “Since I started going down there things have improved and have moved more quickly. Children of today aren't so terrible JUSTWilliam The musings of a middle-aged man from Middle England ‘Best days of your life’. That’s how our school days are described. Personally I agree when I look back on my days at school, though I’m not sure I thought so at the time. Some of the teachers scared the hell out of me, but I also had a lot of friends. I love working in school. I try the best I can to persuade the kids to work hard at their lessons. I get through to some, but not all. But that is the nature of the job – invariably you manage to draw with some kid over how he or she should behave, only to lose on penalties! But I win some 'games', and they make it all worthwhile. I am continually told that the kids of today are worse than we were at almost everything, which is simply not true. I am constantly astonished at the quality of work done by many of the students I work with, work I could never have produced when I was at school. Some of the work I could not produce even now. Though they don’t get taught some of the stuff our teachers thought essential to our education (historical dates, for example) they do learn about the Holocaust and the disaster that was the First World War and about saving our planet. In the science labs they do experiments and theory work way beyond anything I ever did. Maths, English and science classes are given priority, but the students all have to learn a foreign language too. We worry that our children seem to be so different to how we were at their age. But most of it is just a perception – we view the past through ‘rose-tinted spectacles’ and the present as an ugly reality in comparison. But most of the kids I work with are no different than we were. They listen to awful music, talk a totally different language and are cheeky to adults. Some, not many, use language that would make a sailor blush, but they are also the most wonderful, thoughtful creatures on the planet. There is an old saying: No matter how hard you try, your kids grow up just like you. I can assure you there is a lot of truth in it.

Anger at hospital parking charges COULD someone at the Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust or indeed one of our local Members of Parliament verify or correct my thoughts about the parking charges levied at both Leighton Hospital and the Victoria Infirmary, Northwich. As I understand the funding system, the trust put forward a costed plan to central government for funding to provide medical care and treatment, relevant staffing and the necessary infrastructure and maintenance costs to carry out the service – including parking facilities for NHS vehicles, staff, patients and visitors where practical. When this costed plan is approved, central Government hands over the funding for the trust to administer. There have always been maintained parking facilities at Leighton Hospital and at Victoria Infirmary as part of the infrastructure – an infrastructure funded by central Government via the trust. So why is a parking charge levied to pay for a facility that is already paid for by the provided funding? I personally agree with the many words and phrases used by the vast majority of people affected by these charges – immoral, perverse, tax on the sick and disabled, tax on people going to work and money-grabbing, to name but a few. As most people local to Northwich will know, the Victoria Infirmary site, given benevolently to the people of Northwich, is the only place in the Northwich area where a charge is levied on parking. How can this be right? Then, to add insult to injury, The trust has apparently erected signs threatening civil penalties for anyone, for example a blue badge holder, legally parking on the road leading into the Victoria Infirmary and Verdin Park, a road that belongs to and is maintained by the local council, not the trust! Is there any wonder that so many people feel used, abused and confused and have lost all confidence in the very people they placed their trust in to represent their interests and well being. NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED

TAX ON THE SICK: Patients and visitors are furious over parking charges at Northwich’s Victoria Infirmary and Leighton Hospital.

RECOVERING: Little Declen Joynson, four, seen here with dad Gareth and mum Sarah White, had to have emergency surgery after being attacked by a dog outside a shop.

Attack dog should have been put down I READ the article (February 18) about a poor child being savaged by a dog. Whereas I am not aware of the precise details concerning the dog attack on four-year-old Declen Joynson, I find it inconceivable that the dog was not put down. It is unacceptable for the police to trivialise this incident and excuse the dog by saying it was ‘unfortunate’ and ‘it was it’s first attack’.

Some dog attacks have such serious consequences that the future risk to other children is simply too great. This was such an attack. If a human was to attack a dog causing it harm, then they would undoubtedly be punished by the law and rightly so. Quite frankly I am appalled at the complacent attitude of the police and, presumably, the dog owners. ANN COWLE, Castle

Foul practice

To change the building from a normal office into a luxury pad suitable for the EU’s bureaucrats (of course), the commission has put out a tender for the building and renovation contract. Unfortunately, they initially advertised it as 5.2m euros and they've already had to correct it to £5.2m. Obviously, their wishful thinking about Britain giving up the pound will never cease. Eurocrat day-dreaming aside, it's not the most auspicious sign of their financial awareness. That exchange rate mix-up constitutes a difference of more than £500,000. No wonder so much of our money goes walk-about in Brussels. However, do please tell British building contractors to look out for this tender so that, at least, our EU money will be coming back into this country. CHRIS WATKIN Cuddington

Eurocrat stupidity

Worthy Harlequins

I WONDER who are the more selfish and stupid – dog owners who let their animals foul our paths and open spaces, or those that clear it up into plastic bags and then leave the bags on verges, or hang them from bushes and trees? I think the latter are the more ignorant since they have identified a problem but come up with a moronic solution. How long do they think plastic takes to degrade? And as it may take years, who do they think should collect this stinking harvest? In what way do they think it improves our countryside? What have they got between their ears? NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED

THE EU seems to have forgotten we are not in the euro. Its development of a new ‘super-embassy’ to Britain (you really wanted this, didn’t you?) has got off to a typically incompetent, Brussels-style start. ‘Europa House’, as the development is to be called, will be housed in 32 Smith Square, Westminster. As you might have expected, the very first days of the redevelopment programme have already revealed yet more of the EU’s financial incompetence.

“CAN this cockpit hold the fields of France?” It can when we have acting of this quality (Henry V at the Harlequin Theatre, Northwich). From Richard Ellis as the king of the title to Tom Jeffries, a boy in his army, there was not a weak link in the performance. Having seen this play quite recently at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester performed by full-time professionals, I can honestly say this performance was almost up to the same standard. In fact, the narrator, Jeff Barlow was, in my opinion, better

than his professional counterpart. The set at the Harlequin was bare, yet it did hold the fields of France, two mighty monarchs and their armies. It did more – it was Harfleur and Southampton, it was a bawdy house in London. In truth it was anything these fine actors wanted it to be. I give many thanks to the Harlequin Theatre Company for giving us such ‘royal’ entertainment, and I congratulate them for turning an old warehouse into a fine little theatre. But they, and we, deserve better. I have been saying for years our town needs and deserves a purpose-built, modern theatre. The Harlequins have shown they are worthy of one and we, the public, deserve one too. ALAN LOWE Melchett Crescent, Rudheath

THERMAL TREATMENT PLANT: Campaigners confident Lostock Gralam plan is dead, but fight to continue over proposals at Middlewich

Waste burning scheme protesters celebrate

OVERJOYED: Protesters who fought plans for a waste-burning plant celebrate the fact the proposals are all but scrapped at the Lostock Gralam site where the incinerator would have been built. RS020309Incin-004 ANTI-INCINERATOR campaigners are confident they have claimed victory in their fight against plans for a thermal treatment plant at Lostock Gralam. The Chronicle revealed last week the company behind the proposals, WRG (Waste Recycling Group), had been snubbed by council chiefs in its bid to win an £850m, 25-year contract to manage Cheshire’s household and residual waste. And while the firm can still submit a planning application for a plant at the former Brunner Mond site off Griffiths Road, protesters are buoyant. They believe it is now inconceivable the facility, which would burn 350,000 tonnes of waste a year, will be built. Emma Guy, chairwoman of Lostock Gralam Parish Council, said: “We are naturally delighted with the decision to exclude incineration from the waste plan. “This decision is in no small part down to the huge efforts of all the concerned residents of Lostock Gralam and Northwich, and the support of CHAIN (Cheshire Anti-Incineration Network), who have fought this all the way.” A statement issued by CHAIN chairman Brian Cartwright on behalf of the group said: “Common sense appears to have prevailed, thanks in part to almost 20,000 Northwich citizens who expressed their displeasure at plans to build an incinerator in their midst as a solution to Cheshire’s waste. “However, the fight in Cheshire is not over and the Covanta proposal for Middlewich is still live. CHAIN and the people of Middlewich will continue fighting the plans.” Covanta Energy revealed last week it was preparing to submit a bid for its proposed 35MW Energy-from-Waste (EfW) plant at Midpoint 18 Business Park. The company claims the project would generate enough energy for 50,000 homes. The planning application will be submitted to Cheshire County Council and will be accompanied by a “comprehensive” environmental statement examining the potential impacts of the development. Mrs Guy said: “We are still concerned that this may not be the end of the matter, as the site at Lostock is designated as suitable for thermal treatment in the Cheshire Waste Local Plan. “This could mean that another developer puts in plans for an incinerator, just like Covanta are planning to do in Middlewich.

By Dave Goodban But I am confident the residents will continue to work with CHAIN to ensure that we never get an incinerator on this site.” Cllr Neil Ritchie is environment portfolio holder for the new Cheshire West and Chester (CWAC) council and chairman of Cheshire’s Joint Waste Management Board, which is expected to identify its preferred bidder for the 25-year Private Finance Initiative contract in November. He said ‘green’ solutions are required to combat the shortage and spiralling costs of landfill and the effect of greenhouse gas emissions on global warming. Cheshire already pays out £6.4m in landfill tax every year.

“Not only is landfill space in short supply, much of the waste currently ending up there is harmful to the environment and costing taxpayers more in landfill tax every year,” said Cllr Ritchie. “It is a waste of natural resources, totally unsustainable, and for the good of future generations cannot be allowed to continue.” WRG’s planning and estates manager, Rob Asquith, said: “We are extremely disappointed not to have been shortlisted to the next stage of the council’s waste procurement contract. “We are currently considering all possible options for the future of the site in Lostock and will make these known to appropriate parties in due course.”

It’s down to last two choices for £850m contract THE companies behind the ‘greener’ alternatives to incineration, chosen by council chiefs to compete for the lucrative county waste contract, have revealed details of their proposals. Viridor Waste Management currently works with more than 30 local authorities and thousands of private customers nationwide. It wants to create a centrally-located biological treatment plant using ‘proven technology’ to recover further recyclable materials and generate high-quality Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) from the waste. That SRF would be treated at an Energyfrom-Waste (EfW) heat and power plant at the Ineos Chlor site in Runcorn. Efficiency would be enhanced by using waste transfer stations located in east and west Cheshire for the convenient delivery and bulking of materials. Viridor’s technical and development director, Barrie Hurley, said the solution “brings environmental, social and economic benefits both locally and regionally”. and FTSE 250 firm Interserve proposes a state-of-the-art ‘gasification’ facility which would transform waste previously bound for landfill sites into energy and harmless aggregates for the building industry. Waste, transported from transfer stations to a new treatment facility, would be sorted and materials like glass, metal and plastics removed for recycling. Residual waste would be heated under controlled conditions to produce gas, eventually mixed with oxygen to drive turbines and generate energy in the form of electricity and heat, which would then be used to power the facility and distributed locally. As power is generated from organic sources it is recognised as renewable or ‘green’ power, eradicating the need for fossil fuels. Charlie Cornish, managing director of business development at United Utilities, said: “We aim to improve existing recycling and waste management across Cheshire, using environmentally sustainable advanced technologies that support the generation of renewable energy.”

CELEBRATION: Pupils from Great Budworth Primary School pupils impressed the Ofsted inspectors. IC260209report-003

Praise all round

THE well-behaved pupils and inspirational teachers of Great Budworth Primary School have been praised by education watchdog Ofsted.

Government inspectors visited the school on January 21 and 22. Their newly published report describes Great Budworth as ‘a good school’, which is ‘improving rapidly under

strong guidance and leadership’. All aspects and areas of the school were judged to be ‘good’ and the children are praised. “Pupils behave well,” points out the report. “They get along well with school friends and adults and their enjoyment of learning stems from their pos-

itive attitudes. They have a good sense of right, wrong and fair play and take responsibility seriously.” The inspectors also noted ‘exceptionally good provision of curriculum and other activities to enrich pupils’ learning and educational experience’. David Southern, chairman of

the school’s governors, said: “The headteacher and staff can take real pride in Ofsted’s findings, and I know how committed they are to build on this and continue the school’s improvement.” ■ In response to interest expressed in the village, the school has announced it plans to open a pre-school class at the school five mornings a week, starting in September.

Science is on the move VERDIN HIGH SCIENCE students at Verdin High School, Winsford, donned their lab coats for a series of experiments in a unique learning environment. The volunteer-led Lab in a Lorry scheme, a mobile laboratory that gives 11 to 14-year-olds the chance to explore science through hands-on experiments, rolled into school for three days last week. The programme consists of three 44ft lorries that have been visiting schools and youth organisations across the UK, free of charge, since early 2005. Each lorry is fitted with three lab areas where groups of up to six youngsters can take part in each of the fun and informative experiments. The programme, a partnership between the Institute of Physics and The Society of Petroleum Engineers, is guided by volunteers, all practising scientists and engineers. Institute of Physics spokeswoman Dayna Mason said: “Lab in a Lorry is a fantastic experience for young people. They get to have some fun while they explore experimental science under the watchful eyes of expert mentors. “It’s all about generating excitement and curiosity in science.” Verdin’s head of science, Dr Catherine Ash, said the day was a huge success.

Victim told police: ‘I feel threatened’

SCENE: The Sandybank Flats complex on Park Road, Winnington, near where James Straiton, inset, was assaulted last July. THE jury in the Jim Straiton murder trial this week heard his desperate calls to police, made moments before he sustained the horrific injuries from which he later died. The 59-year-old dad-of-two called 999 twice in quick succession shortly after 1am, minutes before allegedly arming himself with a hammer to try to chase off a group of men he had been arguing with from inside his ground floor flat. A total of six calls were made to police by Mr Straiton and his neighbours. But officers did not arrive at Park Road, Winnington until he had suffered a fractured

nose, arm and cheekbone, three broken ribs, damaged vertebrae and a brain haemorrhage. They found him lying in a pool of blood on the pavement. A female neighbour called 999 twice, once telling the operator “something quite nasty’s going off”. But, like Mr Straiton, she was told to ring her local police station because of the high volume of emergency calls received on the morning of Sunday, July 27. On Monday Chester Crown Court heard she first called 999 at 1.11am. Audibly tearful, she said there was “a disturbance”. And she told the operator: “I’m too frightened to look out the window”.

Mr Straiton’s 15-year-old daughter left court in tears when the court heard the tape of his call to police, made moments after his neighbour’s. He rang 999 again a short time later, saying the men had climbed over a fence into the Sandybank complex, and adding: “I feel threatened”. In her second call the neighbour said: “They’re trying to get into his (Mr Straiton’s) flat or get him to come outside.” Another neighbour, Christina Beadle, said the group were “giving lots of abuse to the man downstairs”, and added: “They’re all going mad”. Cash boost for tourism CHESHIRE will get a share of £2m to further promote the region as a business tourism destination. The funding, announced by the North West Regional Development Agency, will go towards a number of North West-wide initiatives, including introducing a quality accreditation scheme tailored specifically for the conference and meetings industry. The investment, to be channelled through the region’s five tourist boards, will also be used to identify new business opportunities, bid for major international conferences, improve current marketing and monitor the region’s performance. Business tourism is the most lucrative and fastest growing tourism sector in the UK.

Fly-tipper fined A 28-year-old Northwich man has been ordered to pay £925 after pleading guilty to fly-tipping. Nilton Vieira Aniceto of Victoria Road, Northwich, appeared before Northwich Magistrates Court in relation to an offence on December 15, 2008, at James Street, Northwich. Aniceto was ordered to pay a £500 fine, £410 costs and £15 victim surcharge. Council officers were told by Aniceto that the fly-tip was a result of unwanted items from a house move, and he claimed to be unaware of the correct methods of disposal. Aniceto was told by magistrates that he ‘should have known better’. They branded it ‘unacceptable behaviour that would not be tolerated’. Lead councillor for environmental policy, Cllr Lynn Riley, said Vale Royal Borough Council would prosecute fly-tippers who had been caught by their officers. Cllr Riley said: “We have been working very hard to bring fly-tippers to justice and this work is continuing, with officers making very determined progress to fight back against fly-tipping.” ■ To report a fly-tipping offence contact Streetscene on 0800 435199 or email streetscene@valeroyal.gov.uk

THE new Cheshire Constabulary budget has been set at £172,898,000, an increase in funding of 2.9%. This means an increase in council tax on a Band D household of just over 9p per week, or 3.65%. Police authority chairman Peter Nurse said: “Our priorities this year are to continue to protect the people of Cheshire and see a further reduction in crime and fear of crime. “The budget we set earlier this week will enable the constabulary’s performance to continue to improve and is critical in helping the new chief constable, David Whatton, to achieve the objectives we have set him.” At the time of setting the budget the authority agreed the chief constable’s policing objectives for the year would be: ■ Increasing public confidence in policing by providing a visible presence ■ Responding effectively to the public when needed ■ Working in partnership with others to create strong and vibrant communities ■ Preventing and investigating crime and disorder ■ Protecting vulnerable people from serious and organised crime and terrorism.

Kids join clear-up operation

Pipe plans go to new council THE shadow Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) will be consulted on plans for two 58km pipelines stretching from Northwich to the Mersey Estuary.

Cheshire County Council decided to refer the plans to CWAC, which comes into power on April 1, after its executive group met at County Hall on Thursday. In December the county's Development Regulatory Committee turned down an application from King Street Energy Limited (KSEL) for the pipelines, and another proposing the creation of 10 underground cavities to store 200

HARD-WORKING residents on a Winsford estate shifted an astonishing 100 TONNES of rubbish during a community clean-up day. Men and women living on and around Crook Lane, Wharton, got their hands dirty and joined police officers, Vale Royal community safety wardens and Weaver Vale Housing Trust (WVHT) staff for the 'Impact Day' last Wednesday. And with the help of youngsters from Wharton and Willow Wood primary schools and a group of junior community wardens from Greenfields, who gave up their own half-term time, they soon

had the area looking as good as new. The skip hire firm employed to remove the rubbish collected from around the estate later confirmed around 100 tonnes were taken away. Neighbourhood development officer at WVHT, Neil Corbin said: “The Impact Day was a big success and it was fantastic to see so many local people getting involved and taking pride in their neighbourhood.” “We received a lot of positive comments from residents throughout the day and I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who helped make the day such a success.”

By Dave Goodban million cubic metres of natural gas off King Street, Rudheath. A public inquiry will take place this year after KSEL appealed both rejections. Cheshire’s executive is being consulted on the pipelines plan by the Department for Energy and Climate Change, in an identical but parallel application made under the Pipelines Act 1962. Secretary of State Hazel Blears will make the final decision. But, unlike applications under the Planning Acts, the Secretary of State can also grant powers of

compulsory purchase to acquire council land. Cllr Andrew Needham, the county council’s executive member for the environment, is publicly supportive of the plans. He said: “The executive decided that it should be sent to CWAC to make a decision about the project because there are now only weeks left before it takes over.” Unlike previous applications for gas storage in the county, the KSEL proposal does not intend to use existing salt cavities. The company wants to carve out the cavities using water pumped from the Mersey.

Drink more dangerous than heroin – doctor A TOP doctor has warned a conference that heavy drinking poses a greater threat to society than heroin. John Bache, who has worked in accident and emergency rooms in hospitals in Cheshire for 26 years and is also a magistrate, has demanded an increase in the price of alcohol and asked the Government to look again at 24-hour licenses for pubs and clubs. Speaking at a special crime conference held at Chester Racecourse, he said: “The problems of alcohol are far worse than the problems of drugs. For every person I see admitted to A&E because of drugs I’ve seen far, far more because of alcohol.

CONFERENCE CALL: John Bache.

“In my time I’ve seen tens of thousands of people in hospital because of assaults, injuries or road accidents related to alcohol. “It’s my own personal estimate that on a Friday or Saturday night between midnight and 6am 85% cent of the patients we see in A&E are there because of drink. “Since 24-hour opening the incidence of drunken attendances has unquestionably increased – even the Government acknowledge that it has had a detrimental effect. They should also take steps to raise the price of alcohol.”

The conference was to launch a new Cheshire Probation Area strategy to protect the public and tackle alcohol-related crime. Assistant chief officer Kim Thornden said: “What we have created for those particular types of offenders is a new court sentence called an Alcohol Activity Requirement to ensure that offenders have specialist alcohol-related meetings. “It’s also about exploring what works for that particular person and galvanising them to take action in their own life. There is also an enforcement element.”

Hunt for knife-wielding store raiders TWO armed robbers, one of them female, threatened staff at a Northwich off-licence with kitchen knives before escaping with more than £700 cash. The pair entered Bargain Booze on Victoria Road at around 9.30pm on Wednesday, both armed, and the terrified shop workers, a 34-year-old Northwich woman and a 22-year-old man from Lostock, handed over the cash. Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage of the incident. A spokesman said: “Two offenders entered the shop armed with blades and made threats to the two members of staff. “One of the robbers forced their way behind the counter and the pair fled on foot with a three-figure cash sum. The shop workers were, thankfully, unhurt, but they were both left shaken.” ■ Witnesses, or anyone with information, can call Northwich’s Pro-active Policing Team on 01244 613256

CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Police released these CCTV images of two armed robbers who raided Bargain Booze on Victoria Road.

Jail for conman who cheated pensioners A CONMAN who fleeced elderly people out of thousands of pounds has been sent back to prison after he failed to mend his ways. John Boy Hamer, 34, of the Travellers Rest caravan site in Rilshaw Lane, Winsford, was originally jailed in March 2006 for three and a half years but was released on licence. In what was described as a “sick-

ening” series of crimes, he had cold-called five elderly residents in Winsford, Chester, Tarvin and Tarporley, claiming their houses were in need of maintenance and demanding cash payments on the spot, netting almost £2,000 in total. When he was released, he was given an ASBO banning him from canvassing for garden work for life.

WINSFORD cadets have been commended for helping to raise £28,268 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. The 2008 appeal incorporated the Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire’s Cadet Poppy Appeal Awards. Members of TS Portland, Winsford, were runners-up in the sea cadet section for their fundraising efforts. The unit attended a presentation evening at the De Vere Daresbury Park Hotel, near Runcorn, last week to receive certificates and trophies from the Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, Colonel William Bromley Davenport. Royal British Legion Cheshire county manager Jeff Harrison said: “We have been pleased with the response from the cadets and I would like to thank them all for their hard work and commitment. “The money raised will be used to extend the work of The Royal British Legion among the serving and ex-service community in Cheshire.” The awards aim to acknowledge individuals and sea, Army, air and fire and rescue cadet units who have used initiative and team-building skills to raise funds for the appeal. The total raised during the 2008 campaign is 22% higher than the previous year’s efforts with even more cadet units taking part.

Dr Andrew Deadman

A NEW landscape partnership to conserve and improve features on the county’s Sandstone Ridge will be led by Dr Andrew Deadman. £1.4m from the Heritage Lottery Fund to conserve them. Dr Deadman, chairing the Habitats and Hillforts Landscape Partnership Scheme Steering Group, said: “It promises to be very rewarding.” The programme was launched last autumn and has already seen the successful completion of hedge laying, dry stone walling and tree planting.

Peckforton Castle’s falconry has welcomed Dora the red kite from a breeder in Leeds, and, according to owner Chris Naylor, she has settled in well. A rare bird, it is unmistakable with its red and

HE Harlequin Theatre is teaming up with culture group DAN to bring an irreverent contemplation of insanity to the stage in Northwich. An Evening with Psychosis, directed by Steve Jackson and performed by Sheffield’s Point Blank Theatre group, comes to town for one night only on Saturday. The story begins when a spaceship crash-lands on a lunar colony, while in a parallel time and place plans are afoot to escape from a psychiatric ward. DAN (Development of the Arts in Northwich) spokesman Nick Hughes said: “The hazy line between madness and reason is examined as personal testimonies compete with science fiction to offer an objective and subjective account of psychosis. “Finding both the reason in madness and the madness in reason, the show takes an absurd and poignant journey into the sublime and malign realms of the mind.” While a space crew is distracted by irregular orbits, testimonies taken from interviews with professionals and those affected by psychotic conditions are woven into their journey. Meanwhile, at the frontier of space, satellites are calling for reasons to be abandoned and plot a new orbit around the moon. Point Blank has received rave reviews from the national media, with The Guardian describing the group as “one of the most exciting theatres around – political, witty, challenging and bold”. The show features an international cast of comedic and physical theatre specialists and trademark scenographic splendour developed with designer Richard Lowden, (Forced Entertainment). ■ An Evening with Psychosis starts at 8pm on Saturday (March 7) at the Harlequin Theatre, Queen Street, Northwich. For tickets priced £8 (£6 concessions), phone Nick Hughes in the DAN Office at Northwich Library on 01606 41597.

Lizzy rascals AMERICANA: Reverend Dr Clive Jackson, left, and some of the cast of Route 66. NORTHWICH rocked to the beat of Americana on Friday night at the Memorial Hall. Route 66 roared into town with an inventory of country, rock and pop epics, spanning every decade since the 50s. The audience were treated to the classics of Johnny Cash, John Denver, Cher, Meatloaf and Elvis, to name but a few. The talented musicians and singers, fronted by the heavily titled, Reverend Dr Clive Jackson, of Doctor and the Medics fame, scored a big hit with their theatrical tribute act. Nathan James, talented,

Review by Tracey Clare good-looking and long-haired, was cast perfectly as Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen and many other American rock heroes. Men in the house were equally mesmerised by the four stunning female members – Katie Ashby, Laura Jean Clinton, Anna Ludford and Phoebe Appleby – who sparkled on stage, with a mixture of vocal talent and energetic choreography. The set boasted a mean, polished Harley Davidson, parked outside a makeshift bar, tended by none other

than Mr Jackson himself, who appeared to be enjoying the night hugely. Archive footage of the famous American highway rolled in the background to encapsulate the flavour of the genre. The audience needed little persuasion to hit the dance floor for the Doctor’s spectacularly enjoyable rendition of his 1980s cover of the hit single, Spirit in the Sky. It’s not too late to get your kicks down on Route 66 if you check out the website of the show’s producers for further tour dates (www.theshowproviders.hostsure.co.uk/route66).

Blues boss warns: It’s time to get tough WINSFORD United failed to take their chances on Saturday as Bacup Borough escaped with a point from the Barton Stadium. The result leaves the Blues still just 11 points ahead of the drop zone with third-from-bottom St Helens Town visiting Mid Cheshire last night. Boss Joe Gibiliru has been disappointed by his side’s attitude and application in recent weeks but Saturday’s stalemate, watched by 88 fans, saw an improved display. Bacup, with three former FC United of Manchester players in their line-up, hardly troubled keeper Jamie Mottershead all game due to the Blues’ resolute defensive performance. Chances were missed at the other end by Darren Connell and in particular John Couch while substitute Phil Mason should have done better with his shot on 70 minutes. Gibiliru says that victories are absolutely vital in safeguarding united’s position in the league and that he won’t be afraid to drop players. Newly-signed Dave Tasker, from Middlewich Town, impressed up front and will provide more competition for places. Gibiliru said: “When it comes to players, being friends goes out of the window now. I want results is as simple as that. I’ve got to be tougher and it’s no more Mr Nice Guy. “I have brought Dave Tasker in and played him for 70 minutes. The players know there is competition for places now and Dave had a good debut. “I am losing two or three players this week due to work commitments so the lads I have dropped will come back in and hopefully they’ll bring some hunger with them. “It is vital that we start winning and pull away from the sides below us.”

Blue Square Premier NORTHWICH Vics claimed their second consecutive clean sheet under new management on Saturday with a 0-0 draw at Barrow. Despite seeing their hosts go down to ten men on the hour, Steve McNulty being sent off for abusive language, Vics could not press home their advantage in front of 1,437 at Holker Street. It was the Marston’s Arena outfit’s second point in two games having earned a 0-0 draw with Kettering last week. Former Man City star Andy Morrison is now assisting caretaker boss Andy Preece with first-team affairs (see back page), after ex-manager Steve King left the club last weekend. Morrison said: “It’s just one game at a time for us. We have worked at one aspect with the team and now we have proved that we can stop sides scoring against us. “But it’s up to us to work on the attacking side now and find a goal from somewhere.” This Saturday, Vics host Stevenage Borough, along with local defender Mark Roberts in their ranks, at the Marston’s Arena (3pm). Juniors (under 14s) can watch the game for free on Saturday if they are accompanied by an adult, paying a cut-price entry fee of £10. Vics’ junior sides will be playing an exhibition game from 2pm. Turnstiles open at 1.30pm.

GOOD START: Winsford United’s Dave Tasker impressed boss Joe Gibiliru on his debut against Bacup. SB041008FOOTY-05 This Saturday, United travel to third-placed New Mills (3pm). Due to concerns about New Mills’ pitch,

travelling supporters should call the club first to see if the game has been given the go-ahead.

Finley: We must bounce back

UP AND DOWN: Neil Black’s goal against Kendal pleased boss Gary Finley (right). He said: “To be fair they were the better team. I was delighted to have the lead going into half-time but it was

Witton Albion - UniBond League Premier

WITTON Albion could not continue their impressive league form after suffering a 3-1 home defeat to play-off chasing Kendal Town on Saturday. Having taken a first-half lead through in-form Neil Black, Albion were forced onto the defensive by their Cumbrian visitors and succumbed to three goals in 14 minutes. Boss Gary Finley had no complaints about the game, witnessed by just 293 supporters at Wincham Park, but he is looking for an immediate reaction from his 17th-placed battlers.

against the run of play. “Once we conceded then their tails were up and you could see them building in confidence.

“We just couldn’t get going in the second half. “When a few players have an off day you just hope the rest of the team can carry them but it was the other way around as only two or three players came out of the game with much credit.” Witton hosted relegation rivals Matlock Town last night and on Saturday they travel to Frickley Athletic (3pm). Next Tuesday, Witton host Ashton United (7.45pm). For match reports see www.midches hirechronicle.co.uk

LOSTOCK stayed on the coat tails of Cheshire League Division Two’s leaders with a comfortable 4-0 win at home to struggling Malpas on Saturday. The victory was the Grey Lambs 11th of the season which saw them stay in fifth place but now just seven points off the top. A first-half penalty from Adam Bayley got the ball rolling for Lostock before Liam Sharples made it 2-0. After the break, Kyle Wilding netted before James Horne slammed home a 30-yard screamer to complete the win. This Saturday, Lostock host league leaders Warrington Town Reserves (3pm). ■ Barnton were unlucky to go down 3-1 at league leaders Woodley on Saturday but their crucial matches are still to come. The Division One strugglers were on level terms at the half-way stage thanks to a Woodley own goal but they could not contain the hosts in the second half. This Saturday, Barnton travel to fourth-placed Stalybridge Celtic Reserves (3pm).

Unlucky Park surpass Plate expectations

A DETERMINED Winnington Park were left thinking what might have been after taking higher-league Wilmslow all the way on Saturday. Park, who surrendered a 12-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of their Cheshire Plate quarter-final, fought back valiantly and came within a referee’s decision of causing an upset. Number eight Harry Stubbs put in a

Rugby union

barnstorming display and was unlucky to get on the scoresheet after being held up over the line on three occasions. Park had enough possession but they could not find any way past the North West Two visitors’ defence.

As the game entered the final stages Ben Elliott and James Annells finally began to find some running space and Park got their just reward when lock Ian Moriarty scored in the scorner. Annells converted from the touchline to put Park within five points. But it was not to be as Wilmslow used their experience to play out time and complete the 12-7 verdict and secure

their place in the Plate semi-finals. Club spokesman John Pickering said: “Park perhaps deserved more and it was hard to tell which team played in the higher league but the Wilmslow defence was impressive.” This Saturday, Park travel to mid-table Ormskirk (2.15pm) while the 2nds host Sefton and the 3rds visit Birchfield.

Vale Royal starlets on top form for county

VALE Royal runners used home advantage at the weekend by helping Cheshire win all but one team event at the Schools Inter Counties Cross Country Championships.

The showcase event at Castle Park in Frodsham saw the home county claim seven out of the eight titles up for grabs with local runners prominent. England international Rebecca Craigie finished second in the senior girls event after being embroiled in an almighty battle with fellow internationals, winner Rowena Cole of West Midlands and Blue Haywood of Leicestershire. Amy Talbot, Kate Titlow, Kathy Stringer and Nikki Meadows also ran well for Cheshire who won the senior girls event. Vale Royal’s Megan Huxley and Charlotte Mills grabbed a one-two in the Inter Girls event while Northwich-based Jade Evans finished fourth in the Junior Girls competition, which was also won by the host county.

ANGLING: The final round of the series for the Barnton and Frodsham Amanda Lester Cup was held on the Trent and Mersey Canal at Broken Cross, Rudheath, on Sunday morning. Going into the match, Mark Emmison was the overall leader, three points ahead of Calvin Tagg, his nearest rival. The two anglers were drawn next to each other and it was Tagg who reeled in the 2009 honours. On the day, it was Steve Walker who secured the maximum points on offer with 3-4-8 of roach, gudgeon and small skimmers. Dave Blears claimed second slot with 2-1-8 of roach while Tagg’s third place, with 1-3-3 of roach and perch, was enough to claim the winners’ trophy at the end of this 6-match series with 121 points, one point clear of Emmison. On Saturday, Barry Owen claimed victory on Heesom’s Pool with 7-12-0 of roach, skimmers, perch and a bonus tench. The second slot was filled by Terry Middleton while Chris Hargadon was third with 4-2-5 of roach and skimmers. Middleton was on top form again last Wednesday when his 8-9-4 of skimmers and a few roach was enough to earn the win ahead of Blears and Owen.

Mid Cheshire up for cup

Athletics

Vale Royal’s Tim Morris helped the Minor Boys squad to victory while Cheshire’s Inter Girls, Inter Boys and Junior Boys also finished on top overall. The Minor Girls team finished second to complete a day of near domination for the runners in black and amber. Vale Royal coach Sean McGrath, who was a marshal on the course on Saturday, said the club’s runners had made a huge contribution to Cheshire’s success. He paid tribute to many of the entrants, including under 17 star Rebecca Craigie who has just recovered from a virus. “Rebecca really enjoyed being involved in a real battle. Usually she is so far in front then it’s not much of a challenge for her but she was fighting it out with two international runners which is very rare to see especially at this level,” he said.

Sam is chasing Ovett’s record Athletics

A GRANGE School pupil is chasing a record set by Olympic legend Steve Ovett. Sam Dykes, 15, who is a Year 10 student at the Hartford school, set an under 17s record time over 600m at an indoor event in Manchester. Sam’s time of one minute 23 seconds is just four seconds behind Ovett’s outdoor record over the same distance, set when the Great Britain star was just 16 years old. Sam is currently the English Junior Boys champion over 800m and was recently crowned the U16 Warrington Sports Personality of the Year, as he runs for the town’s athletics club. He is now setting his sights on breaking the record before ultimately achieving his dream of earning a Great Britain vest at some point in the future. He said: “To get four seconds behind an Olympian is pretty exciting. I’m hoping to beat his time next year.” Sam is also hoping to be called up for England Schools duty while continuing to play for the Grange’s football team, of which he is captain, and the rugby team. Coach Phil Hicken described Sam as the most talented athlete he had trained and said: “He is extremely fast and very, very strong. He also has a tremendous mental attitude and will never give up.”
