Murder trial jury retires after the prosecution claims violence went far beyond self-defence

TRIO AWAIT THEIR FATE

By Dave Goodban

THE jury in the trial of three Northwich men accused of kicking grandad Jock Straiton to death outside his home retired to consider its verdict yesterday.

Mr Straiton, a 59-year-old part-time taxi driver, was brutally assaulted on Park Road, Winnington, in the early hours of Saturday, July 26, after confronting a rowdy group outside Sandybank Flats. He died two weeks later and Paul Blower, Nigel Goolding and Joshua Spruce, all aged 20, have been on trial for his murder since February 24. Goolding, of Cromwell Road, and Spruce, of Alderley Road, both claim self-defence. Blower, of Chapel Street, Wincham, maintains he ‘never touched’ Mr Straiton. At Chester Crown Court on Friday, Judge Roderick Evans began his summing up, explaining to the jury: “The prosecution say Mr Straiton was kicked to death by these three defendants. The fatal attack ACCUSED: From left, Paul Blower, Nigel Goolding and Joshua Spruce. had its origins in the confrontation that had taken place before. “The people involved were Joshua The verdicts are expected today – and we aim to be first Spruce and Paul Blower, both of whom, the with the news. The three defendants had earlier been at a 40th birthday party at Winnington Rec. Judge Evans said the ‘inevitable’ noise made by ‘people who had drunk far more than was good for them’ was the catalyst for the fateful scenes.

Father faces extra charge A DAD-OF-TWO accused of drugs, firearms and illegal money-lending offences has been remanded in custody for a week by magistrates after a fresh charge of assault. Craig Batin, 38, was arrested on suspicion of making a threat to kill at about 10.30pm on Saturday near his home at Dart Walk, Winsford. He was later charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was kept in custody by JPs at Northwich Magistrates Court after a hearing on Monday. No plea was entered. He will now spend seven nights on Craig Batin remand before reappearing at Northwich on Monday, April 6. Batin is already facing accusations of loan sharking following a joint investigation by police and Trading Standards officers in September to tackle illegal money-lending in Winsford. He is also charged with possession of a firearm and possession of amphetamine, a class B drug. He is expected to enter pleas to all charges at Chester Crown Court on Tuesday, April 14. A 24-year-old man from Northwich and a 15-year-old schoolboy from Winsford, arrested along with Batin on Saturday night, were released on bail pending further enquiries.

Justice at last for stroke victim Rod By Dave Goodban A MAN’S long battle for justice for his dead brother has been rewarded with a £50,000 settlement. Campaigner Stephen Johnson has succeeded in winning back the money bedbound stroke victim Rod was forced to shell out on healthcare. Chartered surveyor Rod suffered a massive stroke in May 2005 which left him completely paralysed down one side of his body. Despite needing constant medical care, the Central and Eastern Cheshire Primary Care Trust (PCT) refused to meet his care home bills. But now, after a series of seven appeals against their stance, they have caved in and agreed to pay back every penny. The case had been heading towards the High Court. It is believed the fear of losing the case before a judge – and creating a legal precedent for thousands of people nationwide who are routinely denied care home fees for medical care – forced the change of heart. But Stephen Johnson isn’t celebrating the victory. He said his brother went to his grave not knowing if his hard-earned savings would ever be returned to his estate. Stephen said the stress of the fight has also taken its toll on him. He’s fighting on for the five-figure sum forked out in legal bills on the case. Rod’s nightmare began in May 2005 when he collapsed into a coma in his Acton Bridge kitchen with a massive brain bleed. He wasn’t expected to live but he eventually regained consciousness – but he was completely paralysed down one side of his body. He spent £50k on care at Redwalls Nursing Home in Sandiway from March 2006 until March last year when he died, aged 54. Despite his desperate plight, the PCT refused to foot the bill for his care as

Seven appeals to ‘independent review panels’, made up of officers appointed by the PCT to hear applications for Continuing Care funding, were rejected. But now health chiefs have conceded defeat. “I’m delighted I’ve finally got justice for Rod,” said Stephen, of Strawberry Lane, Acton Bridge. “I always knew I’d win and that justice would prevail in the end – but I’m totally disgusted it’s taken this long. My health is now in tatters as well – I’ve gone through hell to get to this stage.”

Mr Johnson, who funded the website www.continuingcarecampaign.info to help others in Rod’s position, said Rod’s victory should be an inspiration to others in similar plights. “If you have possible long-term care needs you should ask for a continuing care assessment before you leave hospital,” he said. “Retrospective claims can be made as well. The NHS delay and delay and put as many obstacles in the way as possible in the hope you’ll go away and won’t bother them again. But I didn’t give up and I hope Rod would’ve been proud.”

It’s D-Day for new council THE launch of the new Cheshire West Council happens today with a fanfare. As part of the celebration, an open-top bus will be touring the area, carrying the new councillors and a 12-piece band. The bus leaves County Hall in Chester at 10.30am and will be stopping off at Morrisons in Winsford and Baron’s Quay in Northwich. Cllr Mike Jones, leader of the council, said: “This isn’t simply a handover of responsibilities, our new council will think and act differently. “The projects we inherit will be continued with added vigour and new projects will be introduced to tackle issues facing our communities and to give the people of this borough a better life.” He added: “It is my intention that this council will earn a reputation as a high-achieving organisation that listens to its communities and acts to make them better.” ■ See page 13.

Plea for fitter families MP MIKE Hall is urging families in his Weaver Vale constituency to commit to change and sign up for the Fitter Families initiative, led by Gladiators host and former England striker, Ian Wright. He says if people don’t change their habits, 60% of the nation will be obese by 2050. Families can sign up at www.fitterfamilies.com and commit to simple, achievable and sustainable changes to their lifestyle, which will increase their fitness over the long term.

‘Super-school’ for 2,000 pupils a step closer THE creation of a state-of-the-art £75m ‘super-school’ in Winsford is a step closer.

This September, the new Cheshire West Council must present the Government with ‘readiness to deliver’ evidence to create the ‘all-through’ school for 2,000-plus pupils aged four-16. Whitehall asked CWaC to proceed after rating the Winsford project third in a priority list of 70 authorities based on social deprivation and exam results. The new authority must present its case by September to benefit from the present round of Building Schools for the Future funding. “A great deal of work remains to be done if we are to make the deadline – but this is a wonderful opportunity for Winsford and we’re determined to get the job done,” said John Stephens, the

September deadline for £75m plan By Andrew Bowan council’s director of children’s and young people’s services. “It’s a truly transformational project representing a substantial and aspirational change to outcomes for children, young people and their families.” He added: “In addition to providing state-of-the-art educational buildings and digital technologies for our young

people, the site will also become a focus for community activities.” Verdin and Woodford Lodge high schools, High Street Primary and Oaklands and Hebden Green Special schools will all become part of the new all-age school, on which work could start in 2011-12. The vast majority of the preferred site – 53 acres behind the High Street and Verdin Exchange – is already in local authority ownership. Cllr Arthur Harada, executive member for education, said: “The collaboration and continuity that results from working within an all-age institution has many benefits for pupils and staff. “Pupils and their families also benefit from improved continuity for multiagency involvement across phases and a ‘joined-up’ strategy to better meet the needs of all children.”

Bail for death probe teens TWO teenagers suspected of killing a Mid-Cheshire College student in a hit-and-run have had their bail extended. The pair, both from Winsford, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following the death of 17-year-old Ashley O’Brien on Saturday, January 31. Ashley, of Collingtree Avenue, Winsford, suffered multiple injuries after being hit by a red Vauxhall Corsa on Road One of Winsford Industrial Estate while walking home from a night out at 1.35am. He was pronounced dead at the scene and the car was found abandoned at a roundabout a short distance away. Two males, aged 16 and 17, both from Winsford, were arrested and released on bail, which was extended yesterday until the end of April.

It’s the taking part that counts JUSTWilliam The musings of a middle-aged man from Middle England FIRST things first – and I need to clarify a general point I was trying to make last week about trust and politicians. Some are clearly in it for what they can get – and I’m thinking of some of the London MPs who milk thousands each year by abusing the second homes allowances system when they live within commuter distance of the Commons. I never meant to tar our local MPs with the same brush. We’re fortunate to have a hard-working group of MPs who serve their constituents well and are motivated by public service. ■ I play bowls – and enjoy it when the weather’s warm. I remember watching as a kid the old men playing at the Farmers Arms in Rudheath. I was mesmerised as to how they could bowl so close to the edge of the green. I was intrigued by the strange calls ‘Good wood Ash’, ‘Bit more land Bill’ etc – and was dying for the day I could have a go at what looked such an intriguing game. I was well into my teens before I started playing the game competitively. I joined the Gladstone Club team with two of my mates, originally just to play darts and dominoes, but one summer we all played bowls too. I was the worst of the three of us and got some real hammerings to start with – but I got better with practice. It was at this time I started to go to watch finals nights and I got to see the likes of Stan Frith in his prime. He seemed to have such casual brilliance. Others were more flamboyant and the most flamboyant of them all, in my opinion, was Bill Crank from Farmers Arms. What an amazing character he was – hair and shirt blowing behind him as he raced after his woods crying ‘I’m short, I’m short’, only for the wood to invariably nestle gently on the block. The good-natured banter that surrounded a game involving Bill has always stayed in my memory. Oh for a character half as much fun nowadays. The new season starts soon and I’m really looking forward to it. I’ll probably not win anything but it’ll be fun. I hope all bowlers have fun too – just like Cranky used to. After all, it’s only a game...

Horses suffer for a flutter

MANY people have a ‘harmless flutter’ on the Grand National - but the big race is the climax of a three-day meeting that cost the lives of 30 horses from 1998-2008. It is a deliberately punishing and hazardous event. It’s four and a half miles and presents 30 uniquely high and awkward obstacles. It features perilous drops, ditches and turns. Many of the horses will have encountered nothing like it before. Forty usually take part. This is an excessively crowded field, which adds to the risk of collisions and falls. Only one third are likely to finish. Animal Aid’s Race Horse Deathwatch website records all on-course equine fatalities to make public the grim truth that the racing industry would rather remain a secret. This ‘sport’ is only kept alive through betting and racecourse attendance fees. Please don’t back the cruelty. FIONA PEREIRA Animal Aid

Les Mis was a sheer delight

I THOROUGHLY agree with last week’s comments from Alan Lowe regarding his enjoyment of the Weaverham High School production and The Grange School production last week. I’ve seen dozens of school productions and while I did not see Weaverham High School’s this year, I know about their very high standards. But I did see The Grange School’s performance of Les Misérables and, I have to say, it was brilliant in every way. RICHARD KELSALL Hartford

Tory EU sniping is just infantile

OUTSTANDING: Sixth form student David Brook starred as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables.

THE ‘silly season’ has started well before June’s European elections. Conservative MEPs say the European Parliament is trying to impose political correctness on all. The use of ‘Mrs’ and ‘Miss’ will be banned, they claim. In fact, all that has happened is that a short paper has been produced to guide the parliament’s officials and translators who have to write documents for people from 27 different countries. It says women and men

REGARDING the recent letter by Poorva Joshipura, it would be nice if these animal rights people did some research before condemning the excellent work done by zoos such as Chester, both on their premises and in the wild. I’m a member of Chester Zoo and visit it frequently. I don’t in any way condone the palm oil trade when its land-grab tactics threaten the habitats of endangered animals such as the orang-utan. Chester Zoo provides significant funding and expertise to ensure the future of the apes’ wild environment in Sumatra and Borneo. Last year, for example, it gave support to a scheme to stop communicable diseases from humans affecting wild orang-utans in Gunung Leuser National Park in Sumatra. Back in this country, I wonder if Poorva has actually visited Chester Zoo and its Realm of the Red Ape facility? ‘Imprisoned’ is hardly the word I would choose to represent the vast space afforded to the apes both indoors and out, full of wooden poles, ropes and hammocks to climb on, hang from and sleep in.

should be treated equally. It should not be assumed that every airplane pilot is a man. It suggests that the word ‘manager’ not ‘manageress’ should be used when describing women with the job, ‘nurse’ not ‘male nurse’ when describing men. One sentence I note has not been quoted by those seeking to make trouble. It reads: “A woman’s own wishes as to how she would like to be addressed should be respected.” My advice to Conservatives fighting the elections in June is to stop distorting the truth about how the EU works, and stop treating people like fools. Grow up! CHRIS DAVIES MEP Via email

Remembering good old days

THERE will be many of your readers who were Guides or Brownies. I’d like to speak to those living in Middlewich and Winsford to remind them that the Girl Guide Movement started nearly 100 years ago. Think back to the time you belonged to a Pack or Company and how much you enjoyed yourself working with

They even have showerheads which recreate the daily rainstorms that fall on their wild habitat. It provides a place for people who are studying how to protect these great animals to gain valuable experience of orang-utan behaviour before going off to the jungles of the Indonesian archipelago to really make a difference to their survival in the wild. These zoo exhibits are educational to all who visit them, promote the conservation work and provide visitors, especially youngsters, with a close encounter with animals. This helps engender a connection with creatures they might only otherwise see on the TV and therefore be quite dismissive of. Chester Zoo’s new baby Kirana may have been born in captivity but she is a vital link in the chain of orang-utan conservation, and the conservation of hundreds of other species supported by the zoo, worldwide. Perhaps next time Poorva and all the other reactionaries at PETA would spend a little time looking into the work British zoos do before spouting such drivel. Meningitis help

AS A mother and grandmother, I know only too well how devastating meningitis can be. My youngest child contracted the disease at the age of seven but fortunately made a full recovery. We were among the lucky ones but thousands of others are not so lucky. Survivors face a future with devastating after-effects and bereaved families are left to face a future without a loved one. I’m proud to be an ambassador for the Meningitis Trust which works tirelessly to help people devastated by this disease. Its range of professional support services is truly a lifeline; without it thousands of people would be left to face the challenges of life after meningitis alone. But it needs your support to continue its vital work. More than 500,000 people living in the UK have had either viral or bacterial meningitis. Please support the Meningitis Trust; you can really help it make a difference to people’s lives. Sex shock strangler Are you in the market for jailed for 14 years great seasonal food?

CAGED: Killer Tyrone Bates has been jailed for life.

A KILLER who throttled his landlady to death after having sex with her has been jailed for life. Barman Tyrone Bates, who grew up in Mid Cheshire, was found guilty of murder by a 10-2 majority verdict at Truro Crown Court last week. The 33-year-old was sentenced to a minimum of 14 years behind bars at Exeter Crown Court on Wednesday. Bates had admitted strangling 50-year-old Stella Gleadall in her St Ives home in November, 2007 – but he denied murder. He claimed he was provoked when he woke to find the mother-of-three on top

of him having sexual intercourse, after he had earlier rebuffed her advances. Bates went to Barnton Primary School and left Hartford High with six GCSEs, including As in art and music. He later studied art and design at college in Northwich. A pathologist told the court Mrs Gleadall had 32 bruises and abrasions on her body and she had been suffocated. After the hearing the Gleadall family said in a statement they were ‘satisfied that justice has been served’. Judge Cottle said the 470 days Bates has served on remand will be deducted from his sentence.

Tom, 16, who lives at Bowland Rise, Winsford, was nominated by business teacher Marie Rimmer to represent the UK as a Global Young Leader in Washington DC in July. The Congressional Youth Leadership Council accepts only exceptional students from around the world to attend an educational programme to develop potential as a future leader. The programme will enable Tom, Woodford Lodge’s head boy, to meet prominent men and women most people only read about in the news – and to venture into the complex and exciting world of global affairs and economics. After being accepted Tom had to raise £5,000 to fund his trip, which will also take in the

The 17-year-old went up against more than 250 other young hopefuls at auditions in December and was one of only 40 invited to join. Thea is currently studying for a National Diploma in Dance at Mid-Cheshire College’s Hartford campus. Her teacher, Tina Norcup, said: “Thea has a real talent and we’re so proud of her achievement. It’s all testament to her hard work and dedication.” Thea, who began dancing at just two years old, said: “Other colleges offer similar courses but I chose Mid-Cheshire College as I felt they could support my aspirations to become a professional dancer. “I considered studying an A-Level in Performing Arts but that would have just been for three hours a week, whereas a National Diploma allows me to dedicate all of my studies to dance.”

School given glowing report A RURAL school threatened with closure less than two years ago has received an outstanding Ofsted report. Delamere Primary School was inspected at the beginning of March and described as ‘a vibrant hub of creativity and learning’. The school, which has only 55 pupils, scored top marks in all but one of the 11 categories, which include pupils’ learning, development and behaviour. In a letter to pupils, Inspector Gill Jones said: “Your school provides you with an excellent quality of education.” Headteacher Steve Docking said: “I am really proud of the entire team and the difference they have made to the lives of children at the school.” The school was earmarked for closure in 2007 when Cheshire County Council began its controversial Transforming Learning Communities (TLC) programme, but a vehement campaign won it a stay of execution. Mr Docking added: “We look forward to the all the new and exciting projects that are planned for the future, which now looks very bright indeed.”

Campaigner’s plea to patients CANCER sufferers in Mid Cheshire are being encouraged to take advantage of a money-saving NHS initiative. From today, Wednesday, anyone undergoing treatment for cancer, the effects of cancer or the effects of cancer treatment is entitled to apply for an exemption certificate for free prescriptions. “Central and Eastern Cheshire PCT support the implementation of the exemption of prescription charges,” said spokeswoman Tracey Wright. “We are pleased this will support the ongoing health and well-being of local people. “The scheme gives people living

By Dave Goodban with cancer and related conditions one less worry at such a difficult time.” She added: “We expect the new scheme to benefit up to 150,000 people already diagnosed with cancer, who might pay £100 or more each year in prescription charges.” Winsford man Gary Steele, who is chairman of the Leighton Hospital Prostate Cancer Support Group, is urging anyone eligible to contact their GP. “Young women with children will be the ones who’ll really be-

nefit from this, it’ll be a great help,” he said. “At more than £7 per prescription it can soon mount up.” Patients can collect an application form from their GP surgery or oncology clinics. The form must be counter-signed by their GP, hospital doctor or service doctor. Mr Steele said: “If you got your form in before March 24 you’ll be exempt from paying from April 1. “But don’t worry if you didn’t, because once your application is processed you’ll be reimbursed by the NHS for any prescriptions you pay for previously.”

Honours for Vale Royal stalwarts

Val Godfrey

Arthur Neil

NINETEEN long-serving councillors have been honoured as part of Vale Royal’s lasting legacy. The title of honorary aldermen was officially bestowed on borough stalwarts including Frank Dolphin, Val Godfrey, Arthur Neil and Arthur Wood last Thursday in recognition of their service to the borough. It is the first time in the history of the now defunct Vale Royal Borough Council that the honours have been handed out ‘in recognition of the eminent services rendered’. Mayor Cllr Malcolm Gaskill said: “I’m delighted we’ve been able to pay tribute to our new honorary aldermen. It’s so important to recognise their commitment and contribution to civic life and the many things

Arthur Wood

By Dave Goodban they have done to support their local communities.” Fourteen current councillors, all with more than 17 years service, have been honoured, as well as five former councillors who served more than 20 years on the council. Vale Royal chief executive Anne Bingham-Holmes said: “The borough council has not previously given honorary alderman awards but, with the end of the council, it seemed a most fitting time to pay such tributes. “The decision to make these awards forms part of the Vale Royal legacy project, which recognises the excellent services, outstanding facilities and support the council has delivered to its communities.”

Pam Booher The full list of honorary aldermen is: Marie Birkenhead (Forest, Con); Pam Booher (Winsford Gravel, Lab); Brian Clarke (Winsford Gravel, Lab); Frank Dolphin (Weaverham, Independent); Venca Frame (Barnton, Lab); Val Godfrey (Cuddington and Oakmere, Lib); Steve Gough (Northwich Witton, Lab); Nick Harris (Winsford Dene, Lab); Tony Lawrenson (Rudheath and South Witton, Lab); Keith Musgrave (Hartford and Whitegate, Con); Arthur Neil (Northwich Castle, Labour); Mark Stocks (Shakerley, Con); Arthur Wood (Davenham and Moulton, Lib); Ron Woodier (Northwich Witton, Lab); former councillors Bernard Burton, Arnie Ford (posthumous award), Bob Mather, Dr Janet Mather and Roy Okell.

OBITUARY OBITU ARY . NEWS

12 MR DENNIS HAROLD GROVES

THE funeral took place on March 16 of Dennis Harold Groves, of Weaverham. He died peacefully at home on March 8, aged 84.

A service at St Mary’s Parish Church, Weaverham, conducted by the Rev Andrew Brown assisted by Brian Stevens, was followed by commital at Gorstage Cemetery. Dennis was born at Cherry Tree Cottage, Weaverham, where he was brought up with his younger sister Betty. He attended Forest Street School until he was 14 and then worked as a delivery boy for Littiers Butchers in Church Street. On the outbreak of the Second World War he attempted, under age, to join the Royal Navy in Southampton, but was unsuccessful. Returning home, he helped out with the Home Guard, spending many a night on watch on Weaverham Church tower. On coming of age, he enlisted in the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery Regiment, training as a gunner at Cromer, Norfolk. He was promoted to sergeant and trained gunners before going abroad on active service, initially to Palestine. He was then transferred to the North Africa Campaign in charge of a 25-pound gun before moving on to Italy, seeing action at Monte Casino and beyond until the surrender of the German forces in Italy. He then embarked with his regiment on the campaign to liberate Burma from the Japanese occupation, again with his 25-pounder. At the end of the war he was sent to India to work as a First Aid orderly. On his demob, he returned to Weaverham and met his future wife Audrey. They married at Marston Parish Church in 1953. He took several driving jobs before being employed at ICI as a chauffeur/ambulance driver. At this time he joined the St John Ambulance Brigade in Northwich and then in Weaverham. He was involved with all aspects of St John’s but particularly with the training of cadets up to competition standards, going with his family to the St John’s camps in North Wales on many oc-

casions. Mr Groves went on to become divisional superintendent of the brigade, receiving many awards for his dedicated service. After holding many senior positions, he received his highest post, County Commissioner for Cheshire, from the Queen at Buckingham Palace in 1989. For many years he was also involved with the ICI Winnington First Aid Team during their many successful competitions. They won the Grand Prior Trophy. Mr Groves remained at ICI until early retirement through ill-health in 1983 after becoming shift foreman in the Anode Costing department and shop steward. Among his other interests in his earlier days he enjoyed ballroom dancing with his wife at various locations, including Blackpool, and latterly modern sequence dancing at the RHM Club, Middlewich. He was a loyal supporter of Witton Albion and had a great love of dogs. Mr Groves was a active member of Weaverham RBL, becoming its president, and he was also a member of the Burma Star Association and Royal Horse Artillery Association. He is survived by his wife Audrey, son Neil, daughter Ursula and grandchildren Nicola, Richard, Sarah and Craig. At the funeral were standard bearers from Weaverham RBL and the Burma Star Association. A guard of honour was formed by RBL members. Floral tributes were from the family and sympathy cards and donations for Weaverham RBL were gratefully received. Arrangements: Nagle Brothers, Acton Bridge.

A service at St Wilfrid’s Church in Davenham, conducted by the Rev Martyn Cripps, was followed by interment at Rudheath Cemetery. Mrs Graham, the widow of Norman Graham, was born in Davenham, the daughter of William and Frances Beckett, of Agecroft Road, Rudheath. She had one brother, George, and three sisters, May, Ellie and Annie, all predeceasing her. She met her husband Norman in 1933 and they married at Witton Church in 1937. She had a happy married life and was devoted to her two daughters, Joyce and Phyllis. While her husband served in the 8th Army during the Second World War, she worked in munitions and on his return worked in various jobs to help support and raise her to daughters and was still working in her 70s. Mrs Graham spent any leisure time enjoying gardening, knitting, baking and helping and caring for her grandchildren, Michael, Mark, Helen and Jenny and great-grandchild Megan. She was a devoted carer for her husband, who she nursed for years with emphysema until his death in 1990. Tragically, she became ill herself a few years later, suffering cruel and protracted illness. Chronicle April 1, 2009

Ruling Tories emerge from the shadows Nearly a third of a million people in Cheshire West and Chester wake up today to find their local government in the hands of a new council. DAVID NORBURY reports.

IN POWER: The new Cheshire West and Chester councillors and, right, chief executive Steve Robinson.

FEW expressed an opinion on whether Cheshire County Council and the county’s six district councils should be abolished, but the late Crewe and Nantwich MP Gwyneth Dunwoody (Lab) was an ardent critic.

County Hall chief executive Jeremy Taylor exhausted himself in trying to raise awareness, arguing against splitting the four star county council. Last May, 36% of voters turned out to elect the 72 councillors who will run

Massive challenge to balance the books BIG issues won’t go away with the name change. Finance supremo Cllr Les Ford has pegged increases to a maximum of 3% - but still has the task of steering the council through the recession and he won’t know until later in the year how much cash he will inherit from the coffers of the abolished councils. An ageing population means an increasing drain from adult and health services and there will also be difficult choices in education. Subsidising bus services and the state of the roads are also issues. It all adds up to a rough ride, economically and politically. For now though, the new administration, which has brought in PR strategists from central government to help with the launch of the council, will be looking for stability in the two years leading up to the 2011 elections.

the new half billion pound authority which will have 14,500 staff and will be the fourth largest in the North West. In West Cheshire, it will replace the county council, Chester City Council and Ellesmere Port and Neston and Vale Royal Borough Councils. Cheshire wards turned blue as the Tories, who were against reorganisation, gained seat after seat across the area, ending with 55 of the 72 seats. Although two of the Tories now sit as Independents, the Conservatives still have a comfortable majority.

Labour leader Cllr Derek Bateman from Ellesmere Port is in charge of just 13 councillors. The Lib Dems, in recent years the largest party at the Town Hall, are reduced to just four councillors. Chester’s Mike Jones (Con) has been leading the new authority, with Vale Royal councillor Les Ford (Con) as his deputy. Chester’s Cllr Brian Crowe is the chairman. The 10-strong Executive has brought in chief executive Steve Robinson and resources director Julie Gill from

Stoke City Council, Charlie Seward (regeneration and culture) from Chester City Council, Steve Kent (environment) from Cheshire County Council, Ian Whitehead from North Tyneside (adult care & health), John Stephens (children & young people) from Salford and Mike Lewis (community services) from Warrington. The council is to have a ‘can do’ approach and has streamlined layers of management with 200 staff stripped out.

HE final curtain fell on more than four decades of history at Winsford Civic Hall last week, when Vale Royal Amateur Operatic Society bid a fond farewell to the popular venue. The group performed the closing act less than six months after celebrating its 40th anniversary – a fitting finale, as the group was one of the first to perform at the Civic Hall shortly after it opened. The society has been synonymous with the venue since first performing The Merry Widow in 1968 and has staged about 80 productions there. A four-night run of Forty Years And Proud Of It – a celebration of the group’s relationship with the hall – ran from Wednesday to Saturday last week. Spokeswoman Dorothy Gribbin said: “It was a very emotional goodbye. The Civic has been a wonderful home to us and we all have some lovely memories. “It was brilliant recreating some of our best moments from our best shows over the years and we will never forget it.” In the week after it was officially opened on December 8, 1967, by the Rt Hon Anthony Greenwood MP, the hall played host to The Kinks. And it continued to provide the platform for new and established entertainers of all genres over the next four decades. VRAOS has vowed to continue producing and performing shows, but in future they will be staged at the new Winsford Lifestyle Centre, while the Civic looks set to be demolished.

PUBLIC NOTICE Cheshire West and Chester Council has published a new Home Assistance Policy, to cover the period 2009 –2011, which is now available for you to view. The policy will be adopted by the council on 1st April 2009 and will be implemented from that date. The policy builds on the principles of the constituent authorities previous financial assistance policies together with the sub regional housing strategic approach. These were developed in response to the Government’s Regulatory Reform Order (Housing Assistance) 2002. It replaces the home assistance policies available prior to April 2009 for Chester City Council, Vale Royal Council and Ellesmere Port and Neston Borough Council. Our local priority is to concentrate on properties occupied by vulnerable and older residents of Cheshire West and Chester. Copies of the document are now available from the main reception at the following council offices, 4, Civic Way, Ellesmere Port, Neston Town Hall, The Forum Chester, Wyvern House, The Drumber Winsford, and the Information Centre, 1 The Arcade Northwich and Castle Park Frodsham. It is also available on our website www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk For further information, please contact the Private Sector Housing Team on 0151 356 6472.

GET IN: Hat-trick star Joel Byrom scores in Vics’s 4-2 victory over Rushden. JOEL Byrom was the toast of Northwich on Saturday as his hat-trick led Vics to a superb 4-2 victory over Rushden and Diamonds. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder latched onto two crosses for goals on 13 and 55 minutes before completing a memorable afternoon at the Marston’s Arena with his third, hitting a left-foot shot past Rushden keeper Dale Roberts. It was Vics first victory in the Blue Square Premier under caretaker boss Andy Preece and assistant Andy Morrison and one the hosts thoroughly deserved. Luke Joyce made the game safe late on after Rushden had threatened to fight back scoring twice in two minutes through Michael Rankine

DARTS

WE NEED YOU: Winsford manager Joe Gibiliru.

WINSFORD United boss Joe Gibiliru has issued a rallying cry to the club’s supporters after he saw his side go down to another defeat on Saturday. The Blues shipped three goals in five minutes during their 5-0 home defeat to champions-elect AFC Fylde in front of 126 at the Barton Stadium. But Gibiliru, whose United side have not yet won in the league this year and lie fourth from bottom, says it is time to back the Blues. “We need our sup-

porters to get behind us and help us along rather than criticise us. Every game is a cup final so we need all the help we can get. “Two wins will see us safe but it’s obviously case or finding those wins.” Gibiliru described his side’s second-half display against Fylde as “awful” but was hopeful that United’s fortunes could turn around for last night’s key visit to Ramsbottom United. The Blues’ relegation rivals all lost on Saturday and Gibiliru still believes that

six points will be enough to ensure their Premier status remains intact. Only St Helens Town, who occupy the first relegation spot and have conceded 12 goals in two games, have a chance of catching United as they have four games in hand. “Results have gone for us recently but it is up to us to get ourselves out of the situation,” added Gibiliru. On Saturday, Winsford host 10th-placed Silsden (3pm).

Lostock looking up after romp LOSTOCK Gralam sent their promotion rivals a clear message on Saturday by recording their eighth consecutive victory. The fourth-placed Grey Lambs smashed nine past bottom of the league Broadheath Central and are now just six points behind leaders Golborne with a game in hand. Manager Neil Bithell said: “We have banned the word ‘promotion’ but we have got to go for it now. We have done very well. “All the teams at the top have still got to play each other so hopefully we can take advantage.” Anto Palmer hit a hat-trick, Liam Sharples scored a brace while Nadgy Khirat, Mike Butters, Gaz Barry and Dom Johnson completed the 9-0 verdict. Lostock host Monk on Saturday (3pm). ■ Barnton were without a game in Division One at the weekend. The Townfield Lane strugglers continue their uphill battle against the drop takes them to second-placed Club AZ (3pm) this Saturday.

WITTON Albion beat the UniBond Premier transfer deadline by ten minutes to land striker Saul Otobo. The pacy frontman arrives at Wincham Park from Blue Square North side Vauxhall Motors, where he made nine appearances, scoring once. Otobo was in the squad to face Nantwich Town last night, a match that took place as the Chronicle went to press. Witton also officially announced the signing of Ashley Dunn from Fleetwood Town. The midfielder was on loan but he has now joined the club on a permanent basis. After last Wednesday’s 0-0 disappointment at home to Whitby Town, Witton were frustrated once more as high winds caused the return fixture with the Seasiders on Saturday to be called off. Assistant manager Lee Coathup said: “It was disappointing but it would have been a farce. It was the right decision as the wind was howling and the floodlights shaking.” The fixture has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 22 (7.45pm). Witton are not in action in the league until Good Friday when they host bottom club Prescot Cables (3pm). Coathup added: “It’s the final run in. We are in a mini-league of about six teams fighting to stay up so every game is huge for us.”

are still having to put up with. “Life is really tough at the moment for the football club but we will be attacking every game looking for more points. Hopefully in the next two games we can pick up a couple of wins. That would be great. “This win is another step in the right direction for us.” Vics played host to mid-table Salisbury last night and on Saturday they make the journey to Ebbsfleet United for a real six-pointer (3pm). The Kent strugglers are in the final relegation spot, just two places and 14 points ahead of Vics. On Tuesday, Vics complete a vital double-header when they host third-from-bottom Woking (7.45pm).

and Robert Wolleaston. At 1-0 Rushden’s Michael Corcoran was sent off for a horror tackle on Luke Horrocks. After the game Morrison paid tribute to the players and also to the supporters who accounted for the majority of the 687 crowd. He said: “It’s been coming. We have been really pleased and attitude but not the results. It was great to see us score four goals and get the win.” Morrison paid tribute to the fans after the game describing their support as “incredible”. “They lift us up when we need them to but who picks them up?” he said. “Hopefully we gave them a bit back on Saturday. They have been incredible given what they have been and

Winsford taste victory at county showcase NATIONAL qualifying times were recorded and county records tumbled as Winsford Swim Team enjoyed one of their best Cheshire Championships for years. Leading the way for the club at Macclesfield was Michael Almond. He claimed a gold medal, national qualifying time and broke the Cheshire Championships record in

Swimming the 1,500m. Michael also earned a gold and a NQT in the 400m, a gold and a county record in the 200m freestyle and a silver and NQT in the 100m free. He also bagged another gold to add to his silver and two bronze medals. Abbie Henderson was not to be out-

shone as she swam to a gold and NQT, breaking records along the way, in the 400m and 1,500m free. She also won four silvers and three bronze medals. Jessica Gallimore was also a golden girl claiming 100m free, 100m back and 50m back while earning a NQT and county record. Victoria Cunningham earned her first NQT and set a new record while earning two golds, one

silver and a bronze. Lily Tew Weaver also claimed gold and a record time in the 1,500m free. Winsford’s relay teams both earned bronze medals. The girls medley team were Gallimore, Cunningham, Joanna Waterman and Charlotte Cater. The boys freestyle team was: Callum Chapple, Sam Hancock, Oliver Rose and Sam James.

Park fight but fail to seal win in key clash Rugby union WINNINGTON Park were forced to fight hard for a draw in Saturday’s brutal basement battle with Dukinfield.

Visiting Park went into the game with Cheshire and South Lancs One’s bottom club narrow favourites and they were 10 minutes from victory before conceding a late converted try. Skipper Mark Patterson said: “It really was a point lost and the boys were deeply disappointed with the performance that was nowhere near the previous weeks showing. “But to have taken five points out of the last eight, considering the tough season the side have had, some satisfaction can be taken.” In blustery conditions, Dukinfield started the stronger and played a tight game but it was the visitors that took the lead when Sam Barton was first to a kick downfield to score. Ben Elliot converted. Park failed to extend their advantage and were soon punished when the hosts scored just before the break with a forwards try. After the break, Park upped their game and were rewarded when captain Will Burgess barged over from short distance. But it was not to be as Dukinfield’s scrum half nipped in for a try. At 12-12 tensions threatened to boil over and three players were sent to the sin bin after a brawl erupted. Fortunately the violence was short-lived and both sides settled for a point. Park have just two home games left to finish the season on a positive note and avoid the indignation of finishing bottom of the league. Currently 10th, Park host eighth-placed Wigan this Saturday (3pm) before Isle-of-Man club Vagabonds visit Burrows Hill on April 18. “Two wins are a must to finish what’s been a tough season on a high,” added Patterson.

Brave Blacks outdone by leaders Rochdale NORTHWICH began life after Kevin Greaves with a gutsy defeat at the hands of North West Two leaders Rochdale at Moss Farm on Saturday. Assistant coach Danny Townsend took temporary charge of first-team affairs and his request for a performance was met by backs-to-the-wall effort from the men in black.

The hosts had the better of the first half and deserved more than going into the break 8-7 down. Winger Joel Barber opened the scoring on 10 minutes when he intercepted a pass. Matt Bebbington converted. After the break, Rochdale turned on the style and built an unassailable 34-7 lead.

But Northwich refused to lie down and were rewarded with two tries from Pete Pattenden and Adam Bown. Bebbington added one conversion to complete the 34-19 scoreline. Townsend said: “I know they will give me everything they have got and regardless of the result, I just want to get them ready for the curtain closer

against Sandbach on April 18. “Sandbach have been our bogey team for too long and I am determined to turn the tables on them.” Northwich’s management committee are due to make a permanent appointment in the summer. This Saturday, Northwich visit second-placed Rossendale (3pm).

Friendships formed

RUGBY UNION: Northwich Junior Colts have formed firm friendships with special guests from Canada. Touring school Handsworth Royals visited Moss Farm last week with a mixed squad of under 16-18 players. Northwich claimed an impressive 41-19 victory but by the final whistle it was rugby that was the real winner. Coach Ken Houghton said: “The game had been fast and fiercely contested, but played in great spirit. These events help to foster wider friendships and spread the camaraderie to far flung shores. We look forward to future opportunities to entertain such wonderful guests.” The colts followed up their win by earning a place in the Presidents Vase final after a 23-10 victory at Crewe and Nantwich (tries: Underhill, Bridgewater, Crozier, Devaney; pen: Parkinson). ■ Winnington Park Vags had Chris Morrison to thank for their 43-12 win over Eagle 2nds. His remarkable five tries were added to by Mike Jones and Barry Williams. Other scores: WP 2nds 94 Dukinfield 2nds 0; Manchester senior colts 44 WP senior colts 12.

Success for Sapphires

NETBALL: Northwich Sapphires doubled up to secure points in the Warrington and District League. The first team earned a share of the spoils of their Premier clash with Imagine 8. Holly Byrne earned player-of-the-match honours in the 18-18 draw. The Sapphires third team grabbed an impressive victory over Knutsford. Robyn Louis played a starring role in their 27-18 victory.

Park feel the force

CRICKET: Winnington Park CC are asking for volunteers to help them prepare for the new season. Cricket Force Day, on Saturday, April 4, involves a clean-up operation of the Recreation Ground and the club is hoping members and the public to lend a hand. MATT COMES BACK FROM THE BRINK

OLYMPIC prospect Matt Jump has returned from Team GB’s training camp in Spain fully recovered from a horror back injury.

The 23-year-old canoeing star from Winnington, speaking exclusively to the Chronicle, was close to being paralysed after he slipped three discs but thanks to specialist treatment and rehabilitation, he is on the water and targeting the London 2012 Games. Jump, who now lives in Nottingham within walking distance of the National Watersports Centre, is back from a three-week intensive training camp in Seville where he was joined by 32 other

elite squad members. He said: “Everything has gone very well. After the injury things were slowing down but Seville has sorted me out. “The training camp was intense, you’re just training and training. You can concentrate solely on what you are doing, nothing else gets in the way.” Former Hartford High pupil Matt is now hoping to impress selectors at this weekend’s National Regatta at Nottingham, which doubles up as GB trials.

If he is selected for the squad then he will compete at the International Regatta at Boulogne, France, followed by the World Cup in Poznan, Poland. Selection for the GB squad will mark a remarkable comeback as, following Jump’s injury sustained during an accident in the gym, he was warned that he may not be able to walk again, let alone be an international athlete. Matt said: “When I injured my back it was so serious that I was thinking about my life rather than canoeing. Doctors were questioning whether I could be able to walk properly again. “Another false move or coming back to train too early, it could have resulted in

me being paralysed. “Strength and fitness have suffered a bit and I am not as fast as I was last year but you have just got to get your head down and get on with it. “This weekend is perhaps the biggest of my career.” Matt is now looking for local support from Northwich and Mid Cheshire as he needs to raise more than £2,000 for a new world class training boat. Anyone who would like to sponsor Olympic hopeful Matt then contact the Chronicle on 01244 606413 or email midcheshire.sport@cheshirenews.co.uk and we will forward the details.

Champs hope success will serve up support WINSFORD Lawn Tennis Club are celebrating serving up double success by opening their courts to new members. The senior team has earned consecutive promotions, following success in the Third Division by sealing the Second Division crown this winter. But the club are appealing for more players to get on court this summer as it plans to run a third team. Club coach Chris Mayoh said: “We have done really well in the winter but we do need to get more members playing. “We are only a small club and a lot of

people are often put off by the individual pressure on them but we will be running three teams in the league this year with a third team which will be more social.” Used car dealer Cliff Dickenson and Son of Station Road, in Winsford, will continue to support the club through a sponsorship deal. NORTHWICH Vics caretaker boss Andy Preece gave the club’s long-suffering fans a clear message after Saturday’s 4-2 win over Rushden and Diamonds – that was for you. Preece, who was looking for his second victory last night at home to Salisbury, praised fans for their loyal support during what has been perhaps the TRIBUTE: toughest Andy Preece. and most farcical season of recent times. Four managers so far and being locked out of their own stadium has contributed to Vics being rooted in the Blue Square Premier’s relegation zone. But Saturday’s deserved win, watched by 687 at the Marston’s Arena, was a special moment for the former Bury star, who dedicated it to Vics’ followers. He said: “It’s all for the fans, that is why we do it. Without them there is no point so it was great to see them with a smile on their face. “They are there every game supporting us so it is massive to give them something to celebrate for once and they can enjoy their night. “The support is massive for us and if we can get a few more through the gates then that will really boost the lads. “We are playing really well at the moment and the games are very entertaining so hopefully a few more fans will come down and support us.” Preece was also keen to keep the dying embers of Vics’ survival campaign burning, saying that mission impossible and staying in the Conference was not out of the question. “Strange things do happen in football,” he said. “We are just trying to build some momentum and if we can get some more results this week then we will be on a bit of a roll. “If we can get ourselves on that roll then who knows where it may take us.” Vics now face a crucial double header which will go a long way in deciding Vics’ fate. On Saturday they travel to 21st-placed Ebbsfleet United and on Tuesday they host third-from-bottom Woking (7.45pm).
