FROM VICAR HOLLAND
Since we have finished our overviews of all the full-fledged Apocryphal Books, the rest of what willbe covered happens to be additions to other Books, except for the brief Prayer of Manasseh. Thus, we willlook at Old Greek Esther, or Esther from the Septuagint (LXX). It can get tricky, because not even every LXX manuscript lines up with each other; this will be seen when looking at Luther’s translation and the different manuscript he had.
Martin Luther: Here follow several pieces which we did not wish to translate [and include] in the prophet Daniel and inthe book of Esther. We have uprooted such cornflowers (because they do not appear in the Hebrew versions of Daniel and Esther). And yet, to keep them from perishing, we have put them here in a kind of special little spice garden or flower bed since much that is good... is to be found in them. (AE 35:353)
As is seen, Luther said very little on both theadditions to Daniel and Esther. He spent considerable time with the rest of the texts, but due to these additions being found in the Greek only, he abided by theHebrew text. I personally lean towards accepting the LXX text as genuine, at least most of it. If you areinterested in hearing my drawn-out explanation of this just let me know.
With previous books, I simply provided an outline. I will do the same for this, but make sure to pay good attention to the details. The Additions to Esther are interspersed throughout the entirety of the Book of Esther that you are familiar with.
The following outline is based on the Old Greek form of Esther, which appears in LXX manuscripts and editions. To simplify matters somewhat, the divisions are based on the chapter
headings of the ESV Apocrypha and include reference to the A-F designation of additions used by scholars. Readers should understand that they are experiencing Old Greek Esther in its usual verse-by-verse order.
Also, readers should recognize that the ESVApocrypha text includes chapter divisions from the KJV tradition (labeled chs 11, 12, 13a, 13b, 14, 15, 16, 10:4-11:1 because the additions to Esther were treated as appendices in the KJV). To these the ESV editors have added the traditional chapter divisions of the Hebrew form of Esther. This makes it easier to compare the Hebrew and LXX forms of Esther. The result is a presentation of c 17 chapter divisions, depending on how one counts. However, because the two numeration systems are merged, the presentation of chapters does not flow in strict numerical order. This may confuse first-time readers. It is due to the complex history of the text and not to the indifference of the editors.
The complex natureof this text throughout the ages will be addressed in greater detail after the outline.

D. Postscript (11:1; Addition F:11)
Now that this has been hashed out, here are some of the general challenges found in the text.
The Hebrew edition of Esther stands together as a well-composed history of how Esther delivered her people from destruction by Haman. However, it is speculated that later writers sought ways to improve upon the story by adding more material. They did this for a variety of reasons, such as making the storymore clearly religious and answering questions about the activities and motives of persons in the story. If one is to believe that these are truly additions, then that explanation is accepted.
Greek versions of Esther, which appear among the traditional apocrypha, have two basic forms. Scholars are not surewhich of the two forms is older or how they might have influenced one another as they were copied over the centuries. Even the scholarly names for the forms have changed over time so that one may read about A-Text, B-Text; Old Greek, Lucianic Greek, or Alpha Text, etc.
The different versionsof Esther do not always present allthe additions or put them in the same places. For example, the Old Latin translation included some of the additional material but not all of it. When Jerome prepared his translation of Esther for the Vulgate, he put all the additions at the end of the book like an appendix. Scholars variously describe the passages as six or seven additions. Modern scholars label them A through F, and some divide C into two chapters. Although some of the additions may have been composed originally in Hebrew, additions B and E were likely composed in Greek, which suggests that different authors worked at different times on creating and ordering the material.
Johann Gerhardtore into the Additions to Esther and how they simply do not match up with the Hebrew. Most of Gerhard's criticisms could be softened, but some of it does make good sense. Some of the Greek and the Hebrew certainly do not match up, so now the question is which is more accurate?
The Greek version of Esther includes reference to the Macedonians (16:14), associating them with a time when the Macedonian kingdom was little engaged with the Persian Empire. This reference to the Macedonians could show a late composition of the additions, at a time when the Macedonians were a significant factor in Persian politics. Additionally, this could be a valid translation and addition situation. I say this because the LXX in Exodus makes mention of Heliopolis, a name that certainly didn’t exist in the original Hebrew, but is still accurate.
The Luther Bible tradition does not include Old Gk Est 12:1-6. This passage details the circumstances of the assassination plot that Mordecai reported (cf Hbr Est 2:19-23). Although the LXX and Vulgate texts commonly include the six verses of Additions to Esther 12, the verses are missing from Old Latin manuscripts. Some researchers believe that the Old Latin manuscripts represent an early version of Greek Esther. (See The Old Testament in Greek, vol. 3, pt. 1 [Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 19401, 2; see also Vetus Latina, vol. 7, pt. 3, "Hester" [Freiburg: Herder, 2003], 112.)
It is possible that the edition of the Septuagint that Lutherused did not include the verses of Old Gk Est 12, which would explain why the verses did not appear in his translation. Other passages, such Ecclus 22:19, are also different in Luther's edition of the Apocrypha. These circumstances have led to confusion about what Luther actually did in his translation work. (See,
e.g. Helmut Lamparter's conclusion that Luther had mixed editions in Die Apocryphen I: Das Buch Jesus Sirach (Stuttgart: Calwer Verlag, 1972), 13 n. 4.) Scholars of Luther's Bible publishing believe thatLuther used the "Aldine Septuagint" begun by Aldus Manutius (14491515)
The Aldine edition became the first complete printing of the Greek Bible, published at Venice in 1518. (The Greek text of the Complutensian Polyglot was compiled earlier, but was not released until 1521 or 1522.) The Aldine Septuagint was the base text for German editions of the Septuagint. (See notes by Henry Barclay Swete in An Introduction to the Old Testament in Greek [Cam-bridge: Cambridge University Press, 1914], 174.)
Finally, in contrast with Hebrew Esther, which never directly mentions God, the writers and editors of Old Greek Esther make God a clear character in the story. The LXX refers directly to God more than fifty times. This concern to make the story expressly theological was likely an important factor in the creation of the Greek versions of Esther.
There is much to dig into when dealing with these additions, but there is arguably even more in Daniel. We willdig into that next month!
Memory Verse: LXX Esther 13:12-14: You know all things; you know, O Lord, that it was not in insolence or pride or for any love of glory that I did this and refused to bow down to this proud Haman. For I would have been willing to kiss the soles of his feet, to save Israel! But I did this that I might not set the glory of man above the glory of God, and I will not bow down to anyone but you, my Lord; and I will not do these things in pride.

Verse 3: “For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.” This is where theBody of Christ is really seen as a team. No onememberof the baseball teamcan winthegamebythemselves. Inthe sameway,no onepartoftheBodyofChristcanaccomplish stewardship of theGospel alone. Thepastor cannot. Thecongregational chair cannot. Verses 4–5: “For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function,so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.” In baseball, the pitcher pitches.Thecatcher catches. Thehitterhits. Whena pitcherattemptstohit, theresult isusuallynot very pretty. Catchers often do not excel at running the bases. The hitter usually does not do well when they are sent to the mound to pitch. Every member of theBody of Christ has a unique set of abilities and functions. Not everyone preaches. Not everyone leads. Not everyone sings well. Yet when thecongregationassemblestogetherasateam, itcansucceedinwaysunattainablebytheindividual.
Verses 6–8: “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.” Each member of the team has a role to play. Abilities and opportunities are entrusted to the individual membersof theBodyof Christ to be used for the ultimate purposeofstewarding the Gospelfor the glory of God and thebenefit oftheneighbor. A baseball team can havefiveAll-Star pitchers but cannot win if the hitters do not hit. The best lineup in the league will struggle if the pitchers cannot get anyone on the other team out. Pitchers need the defense behind them to play well. Coaches need to lead well. When they all work together, you have a winning baseball team. When theBody of Christ has all its members faithfully stewarding the unique individual talentsthathavebeenentrustedtothem, thevictorygoesto Jesus! This isthegoaloffaithfulstewardship! Nearly 70 church leaders from across the LCMS gathered on the campus of Concordia Seminary in St. Louis for the inaugural Family Discipleship Facilitator Training. Throughout the four days, participants explored how homes and congregations can partner together to make lifelong disciples of Jesus.

This four-day training offered tools, resources, and practical application. Larry Yochum (Director of Youth Ministry, St. John's Lutheran Church, Arnold, Missouri) led the conversation on Action Plans, helping participants access, celebrate, brainstorm, and develop a plan to take home.
Rev. Dr. Todd Biermann (CCF Executive Director) guided participants in an understanding of the biblical foundation for Family Discipleship: the biblical mandate that calls Christian homes and congregations to be united in family discipleship to serve the church in accomplishing its great commission.
Dr. Ely Prieto (Lutheran Foundation Professor of Urban and Cross-Cultural Ministry) expanded our understanding of multi-ethnic and multi-cultural consciousness in family discipleship.
Hannah Knehans (Director of Family Life Ministry, Trinity Lutheran Church, Springfield, Missouri) spoke from personal experience about practical tools to advance family discipleship in the home. She shared useful tools, especially for families with children in the home.
Participants learned from Matthew Knehans (Research & Operations Specialist, CCF) about the power of congregational self-assessment using CCF's Faith & Life Survey tool.
Pastor Mark Bushuiakovish (Associate Pastor, Our Savior Lutheran Church, Nashville, Tennessee) spoke to our trainees about achieving the paradigm shift toward uniting homes and congregations in making lifelong disciples of Jesus.
Pastor Steve Andrews (Associate Pastor, St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Lee's Summit, Missouri) fielded lots of great questions about the Faith at Home Milestones series to mark the key steps of faith formation for children through high school.
Each day began and ended with prayer, including “family” devotions and Compline services led by the training team (including LCMS Manager of Family Discipleship, Andy Becker, pictured right).
One participant captured the spirit of the training perfectly: "What a joy to see so many people passionate about Family Discipleship!" From action planning and resource sharing to meals, prayers, and candid conversations, the week was full of encouragement, clarity, and joyful urgency for the work ahead.
We give thanks to God for the 60 newly trained Family Discipleship Facilitators, the nine members of our CCF trainer team, and for the momentum God is building through this initiative. As these leaders return home to serve their congregations, schools, and communities, we pray God continues to bless their work abundantly!
TRINITYFAMILYPRAYERPAGE
