FROM VICAR HOLLAND

Now that we have concluded the examinations of the Wisdom Books of the Apocrypha, we now find ourselves nearing the end of technical “books” within this apocryphal list. There is but one more book within our Apocrypha and it is probably the least utilized book out of them all: The Book of Baruch. Now, as we will see soon, there is another text called “The Letter of Jeremiah” which, in some traditions, was appended to Baruch as its sixth chapter. Elsewhere, it is separate as its own text. Due to the history, we will be looking at both Baruch and the Letter of Jeremiah in this article. Altogether, it isn’t long at all.Baruch being a short versed five-chapter book, with the Letter of Jeremiah being a seventy-three-verse chapter.

As a note for the next articles, since this is the last full “book” of our Apocrypha, the rest of the articles will deal with what are considered “Additions to CanonicalScripture.” These are additions to Esther and Daniel. There is also a very short text called the Prayer of Manasseh, which is unique as it is included within our listing of the Apocrypha yet excluded also from the Roman Catholic Canon as promulgated during the Councilof Trent.

Now, back to Baruch and the Letter of Jeremiah, let us follow in tradition and see what both Luther and Gerhard had to say about them (NOTE: Their comments on Baruch reflect the same thoughts about the Letter of Jeremiah, as it was one book for them.)

Martin Luther: Whoever the good Baruch may be, this book is very skimpy. It is hardly credible that the servant of St. Jeremiah, whose name is also Baruch (and to whom this letter is attributed), should not be richer and loftier inspirit than this Baruch. Furthermore, the book's chronology does not agree with the [accepted] histories. Thus I very nearly let it go with the third and fourth books of Esdras. ... Baruch, however, we shall let run with the pack because he writes so vigorously against idolatry and sets forth the law of Moses. (AE 35:349-50)

Johann Gerhard: We admit that Baruch is to be preferred to the rest of the apocryphal books because in it are many quite majestic subjects that are rather close to sacred character. Yet we are scarcely able to list it among the properly canonical books for these reasons. ... Baruch 6:2 says, "You willbe there for seven generations." Yet this is alien to Hebrew style, for nowhere in Hebrew literature is the word "generation" taken to include a period of ten years. The epistle that is attributed to Jeremiah in c. 6 has little flavor of his style. Jerome says (preface to Jeremiah): "The Hebrews neither have nor read this book." .. Baruch conflicts with the canonical books. This Baruch says that "he composed his writing in Babylon after Jerusalem had been destroyed" (1:1). Canonical history, however, testifies that Baruch, the son of Neriah, the servant of Jeremiah, along with his master "had been deported into Egypt" Jer. 43:6) by the stubborn Jews after the destruction of the city. This Baruch says that "after the city was abandoned, money was sent to the priests at Jerusalem that with it they might buy burnt of-ferings, incense, and myrrh and offer sacrifices at Jerusalem to the Lord for the sake of the captive Jews" (1:7). But sacred history nowhere says that after the temple had been burned that there was any external worship there. Rather, it contradicts this fabrication when it mentions that the feasts were discontinued and the temple completely destroyed. Lam. 2:6: "Hehas broken down his booth like that of a garden. He has demolished His tabernacle. The Lord has consigned feast and Sabbath to forgetfulness in Zion," etc. Verse

7: "The Lord has driven away His altar and has removed His sanctuary far from Himself."Ezra 3:12) relates that after seventy years of captivity the Jews returned home and "built the altar of the God of Israel to offer burnt offerings upon it."

Outline

I Historical Information (1:1–12)

II Corporate Confession and Prayer for Deliverance for Jews in Jerusalem (1:13–3:8)

III God's Gift of Wisdom to Israel (3:9–4:3)

IV Poem of Comfort andRestoration (4:4–5:9)

Author— Unknown, potentially Baruch, secretary to the prophet Jeremiah, who would have written the second part of this book, from 3:9 to the end. An exiled Judean would have compiled the first section and potentially wrote the latter half as well. The beginning records the words of a Jewish community in exilein Babylon. The Book of Baruch was compiled sometime after the exile took place.

Date—Written sometime after the siege of Jerusalem in 586 BC.

Theme—Baruch is the story of a Jewish community that repents. Throughout Jeremiah's prophetic ministry as recounted in his book, the Jews hardened theirhearts to his words. Here we see a community inexile that responds from the heart to the call to repentance. In

eschatologicalterms, the community represents the Church, thosewho hear the call of God, confess their sins, and come to Him. The book is best read as a story of the relationship between God and His people.

Background—After Jerusalem was sacked and the leaders of Judah were deported, the Jews established communities in territory occupied by Babylon. In this new situation of exile, the Jewish community, now without the temple and a political home, established connections with other Jews across Babylon. Here we meet Baruch coming from Egypt to a community, calling on them to soften their hearts and return in obedience to the Lord. They do so and send an offering to the Jews who remain near Jerusalem.

As this is a very short book, and it has been summarized well already, I will leave the reader with some information to ponder about the Scriptural nature of this writing.

Sometimes this book is referred to as 1 Baruch to distinguish it from two apocalyptic books (2 Baruch, 3 Baruch) as well as "Things Left Out of Jeremiah" (4 Baruch). The latter books are among the Old Testament Pseudepigrapha.

An additional interesting fact is with the style of writing. The wording of Baruch is heavily dependent on expressions found in biblical prophetic books, passages of the biblical wisdom tradition (such as Jb 28; Pr 8; Ecclus 24),and Dt 30. As Luther and Gerhard note above, these points of consistency with the Bible have helped to commend the book, yet have also made it seem like unnecessary repetition.

One important question that people have asked is whether this book was written in Hebrew or Greek originally? Although no Hebrew copy of Baruch exists, portions of the Greek text show signs of having been translated from Hebrew.

There remains a similar understanding of the Letter of Jeremiah and its contents, as most of the author's thoughts are biblical in character, if not borrowed directly word for word from the Bible. The author portrays the idols as senseless, worth-less, powerless, meaningless, useless objects of human creativity and imagination, not to be feared or worshiped, but ridiculed. Only the just and loving Lord is worthy of faithful worship. This is a main reason as to why the Letter is considered to be chapter six of the Book of Baruch. Following the Vulgate tradition, Luther placed The Letter of Jeremiah as chapter 6 of Baruch. The LXX and earlier manuscript traditions treated the letter as an independent document.

With this brief overview, I leave a memory verse from both Baruch and the Letter of Jeremiah.

Baruch 2:16-18 O Lord, look down from your holy habitation and consider us. Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear;"open your eyes, O Lord, and see; for the dead who are in Hades, whose spirit has been taken from their bodies, will not ascribe glory or justice to the Lord, but the person that is greatly distressed, that goes about bent over and feeble, and the eyes that are failing and the person that hungers will ascribe to you glory and righteousness, O Lord.

Letter of Jeremiah 66-69 For they (idols) will never curse or bless kings; they will never show signs in the heavens and among the nations or shine like the sun orgive light like the moon. The wild beasts are better than they are, for they can flee to cover and help themselves. So we have no evidence whatever that they are gods; therefore do not revere them.

Stewardship Moment

Luke 15:12 – “And the youngerof them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them.” This prodigal son only sees the father as a source of wealth. “Give me my inheritance now!” he says, which is really to say, “You are better off dead in my eyes.” This is the sin at the heart of all greed: valuing things over people. This parable calls us to come to our senses as well, and to see God as the loving Giver of all good, the true Father to be valued above and beyond all the things of this world.

Trinity’s Card Rack – Be sure to stop by the card rack located in the narthex. All cards are 50 cents each and there are a variety from which to choose – Easter, Birthday, Confirmation, Sympathy, etc.
