Your doctor may suggest surgery if: • Your joint damage is so bad that your bones rub together.

• You still have pain that limits your daily life after you have tried other treatments.

If your doctor does recommend a new joint, you may be a candidate for surgery with the ROSA system. One exception is if you have had the joint replaced before and now need revision surgery. Ask your surgeon if the ROSA system is a good choice for you.

The benefits? For starters, the result may be a prosthetic that lasts longer and feels more like a natural knee, says Christopher Selgrath, DO, FAAO, an orthopedic surgeon at Nazareth Hospital.

“This robot gives us real-time data that allows us to adjust our cuts and components,” Dr. Selgrath says.

This ability to make real-time adjustments helps the surgeons to customize the fit, meaning the prosthetic is neither too loose nor too tight. “The feeling is that the more perfect the cut, the better the knee will function and the longer the knee will last,” says Nazareth Hospital orthopedic surgeon Paul Steinfield, MD. The surgeons of Nazareth Orthopedics also hope to use the ROSA system to replace hip joints soon. One benefit of using the system for hips is that a precisely fit hip may be less likely to become dislocated over time. Hip dislocation is an uncommon, but possible, complication of hip replacement.

Is it time for a new joint?

Osteoarthritis is a common reason people have a joint replaced. In its late stages, arthritis wears down the cartilage that cushions the bones.

Signs of arthritis can include painful, stiff and swollen joints.

Taking care through the decades As a busy woman, you might not always make time for yourself. But no matter how hectic life gets, it’s worth prioritizing your health.

Here, Nazareth Hospital gynecology provider Iris Stendig Raskin, CRNP, offers some recommendations for staying well before age 40 and after.

Under age 40 Get screened for cervical cancer. Screening can help prevent cervical cancer or find it early, when treatment often works best. You should start getting screened at age 21. Depending on your age, options for screening include Pap tests and, starting at age 30, a test for the human papillomavirus (HPV).

Exercise and decompress. Self-care is essential— now and in the years ahead. “I write my patients prescriptions to spend 30 minutes a day on something calming, such as practicing yoga, reading or taking relaxing baths,” Stendig Raskin says.

Tell your healthcare provider about any family history of serious health problems, like cancer. Work with your provider to lower your risk if your family history raises it.

Update your family health history, over time, as needed.

Over age 40 Get breast and colorectal cancer screenings. Women 40 and older should get yearly mammograms for breast cancer, Stendig Raskin says. Most women should start colorectal cancer screening at age 45.

Tell your provider about any worrisome symptoms.

Those include irregular or heavy menstrual periods, which sometimes signal gynecologic conditions that occur more often with age. Also, mention any bothersome perimenopausal symptoms, such as hot

flashes, night sweats and period changes. Treatments may be available. “Check in and let us know what’s going on,” Stendig Raskin suggests.

Get bone density tests. “At 65, we stress the importance of getting screened for osteoporosis,” Stendig Raskin says. This silent bone-thinning disease raises the risk of fractures.

Throughout life Stay up-to-date on your well-woman exams. Doing so helps ensure you get recommended tests for conditions that often have no early symptoms. Some women may need tests not mentioned here, along with earlier and more frequent health screenings based on their risk factors. Ask your provider what’s right for you.

Why do I need a PCP?

Answer: Having a PCP helps you stay healthy. Some health

problems don’t have symptoms at first. By having a provider whom you see regularly, you’re more likely to catch any problems early. And if you do develop a medical condition, you have someone who knows you and your health history. This can be very helpful if you have to make complex decisions about your care.

Answer: Many! For example, we provide preventive care,
