TrinitySchool has just completed its 29th year, and this report celebrates the 29th annual giving story of our school. When I think back over all these years, I realize what extraordinary generosity has built and sustained this place. This report is our acknowledgment and thank you for the continuation of that story.
Our theme was “Light the Way,” and the Trinity community has certainly carried the bright light of generosity. Every gift that came in this past year shines a spotlight on the grace of God to this place that educated 585 students. The Trinity Fund far exceeded our goals, and we added significant funding to our endowment. Our God is a generous God, and if people want to know what that looks like, they could learn a lot by reading the pages of this report.
The early generations of leaders at Trinity were lights along the way for all of us. We would not be here if not for their faithfulness and generosity.
This moment in Trinity’s story offers to all of us the chance to be for others what these early donors were for us: those who plant trees they will never sit under, but whose shade will eventually create the distinctive place that future generations will call Trinity School.
I want to thank Andrew Phillips and his devoted team in the Advancement office for their faithful and diligent work this past year.
And thank you to all who have been lighting the way through this year.

The Pinelli family’s Trinity story started long before seventh grader Arthur (’29) was born. In the late winter of 1993, Arthur’s father, André Pinelli, had just left Brazil to live as a foreign exchange student on a farm in Salem, a small town in north central Arkansas near the Missouri border. The next few months began a decades-long journey of community, faith, and generosity that led André and his family to North Carolina.
André’s journey began with the Winberry family and the daily operations of their farm. Alan and Linda Winberry, along with their son Justin, were André’s host family. “When we woke up, we would start,” André recalled. “I remember going out to the barn with Justin first thing in the morning to work.” It was an education in the culture of the rural south and the start of
a friendship that radically transformed André’s faith journey. “Before moving to Arkansas I didn’t believe in Christ,” André explained. “He was like a fairy tale to me.” That changed as Alan Winberry mentored him and their relationship grew. “I call him dad now because he is my second father. We are still very close,” André said.
Alan took a special interest in André because he wasn’t a follower of Jesus. “I started hearing all these preachers when I would go to church with the Winberrys on Sunday, and I started to think Jesus was more than just a fairy tale,” he recalled. “I started to think Jesus really existed.” One day, André shared his new conviction with Justin, and the two decided to get baptized together.
When André moved back to Brazil later that year, he had a new perspective on life and a commitment to Jesus that would shape his family and career. André met his wife, Helê Pinelli, and started working in different entrepreneurial ventures, including the ownership of Brazil’s largest Subway franchise and a private law practice. André believes that his life has been directed and shaped by the Lord. “The Lord has given me so much. I want to be generous with what he has given me.” André continues, “In life, we have huge enemies…Money is one of those things, and it haunts us. Being generous fights against that.”
André often shares the story of a missionary who visited his church in Brazil and made an appeal to the congregation for resources and prayer. The missionary smuggles Bibles into high-security countries. André remembers, “I settled in my heart on an amount of money to give to the missionary. But the
Lord said, ‘I want you to give this amount.’ I replied, ‘But I don’t have that!’” André had often worried about finances and resources before he was a Christian; God changed that. “When I understood it was God’s voice, I understood and wasn’t worried anymore,” he said.
Now André is back in the United States with Helê, Arthur, and Arthur’s sister, Lorena. Last year, André and Lorena were Duke’s first father-daughter pair to graduate together from the university’s Master of Laws program. André hopes that his children learn to walk with Christ and that their trust for him grows just as his did. “The best thing I can do is pass all these stories and my faith along to Arthur,” André said. “[The one] who convinces is the Holy Spirit. I have a long drive planned soon with just me and Arthur. Maybe I should talk to him about this.”
“Light the Way” with this year’s Trinity Fund
The Trinity Fund allows us to continue to offer an education in which each student is known and loved as a unique person created in God’s image. When you give to the Trinity Fund, you are playing a central role in what God is doing at Trinity—providing an education that’s rich, unhurried, and focused on building a future generation of virtuous Christian leaders.
The theme of this year’s fund was “Light the Way.” Your generosity this year has been “lighting the way” for the next generation of students who will walk these halls, experience the joy and wonder of learning, and do so while becoming a disciple (a “learner”) of Christ.

The Betty Price Endowed Scholarship was established in memory of Betty Price of Birmingham, Alabama. Betty had to leave the University of Alabama before completing her degree to support her family, but her devotion to education was realized in her grandchildren, who all benefited from her generous support in their academic careers. It is her family’s privilege to pay forward her love of education to the next generation of Trinity students by awarding an annual scholarship covering tuition and associated expenses.
Funding Goal: $600,000 Current Progress: $300,000
Profile of a Student
The Betty Price Scholarship awards nearly full tuition to a Trinity student who otherwise would not be able to afford to attend. This scholarship provides renewable support for the student throughout his or her years at Trinity.
The Lux Esto Endowment, which formerly supported students with tuition scholarships, will now award need-based assistance to Trinity students for services and programs that are incurred outside of their school-year tuition. The overall aim of this fund is to promote equal opportunity and access for Trinity students. The fund supports expenses such as school trip costs, college preparatory workshops, testing fees, outside tutoring, and learning services support.
Funding Goal: $100,000
Current Progress: $59,570

Project Highlights
A strategic gift of $40,000 helped to purchase a new mini-bus which is being used by every division, especially benefiting our athletics program.
A family foundation’s generous gift of $25,000 provided support for our Lower School library, purchased additional displays and furniture, and created a guest author fund.
A sacrificial gift of $30,000 made it possible to extend need-based financial aid to additional students.
Thank you for investing wisely to make Trinity’s mission flourish this year and for years to come.
