A MESSAGE FROM THE

HEAD OF SCHOOL One of the key vital signs for a school community is generous giving. By that measure, Trinity is a healthy school. Last year, 450 families in the Trinity community gave over $509,000 to support Trinity’s mission. This is remarkable generosity, especially in the face of a pandemic, at the end of a most successful but demanding capital campaign, when the school was grieving the loss of our beloved Director of Finance, Brent Clark. Many thanks to all who helped us blow by our goal of $425,000!

Strong participation is a vital sign, and last year we saw many constituencies give at levels that equaled or exceeded previous giving: faculty and staff (90%), parents (67%), trustees (100%), and alumni parents and grandparents (each at 23%). Such a wide range of highly invested givers shows strong support for the mission of the school across many generations and groups. At a time when many institutions are being pulled apart by divisive issues on all sides, it is a joy to see the Trinity community come together to support the school. Thank you!

New and old giving is another key indicator. Good schools need people who give year after year, faithfully and for a long time. They also need a steady flow of new donors to rejuvenate the philanthropic work of the school and build for the future. Last year, 246 donors gave for the sixth straight year or more. Those who have given for 2–10 years (274) and those who have given for more than 10 years (73) have carried the school’s mission forward faithfully for a long time.

And 117 of our families gave for the first time ever last year. I am deeply grateful for every one of these givers.

Endowments are a unique kind of giving, a sign not only of generosity but also of a maturing philanthropy. An endowed gift is a relatively large gift, given with the intent of preserving and growing the initial investment while spinning off some of the growth in assets over time to fund the ongoing needs of an institution. Nearly fifteen years ago, the Kenan Charitable Trust helped Trinity establish its first endowment for need-based scholarships, and under the wise oversight of our Investment Committee, that initial $1M investment has grown to over $1.4M, even as it has spun off $660,000 towards need-based flexible tuition during that period. This past year, several new endowment efforts germinated, and you will see information about these forward-thinking, institution-building investments in this report. In particular, we’re excited about the Non Nobis Endowment, which is specifically aimed at supporting in perpetuity Trinity’s commitment to offer its unique education to a racially and economically diverse student and family community. Building an endowment is like planting the seed of an oak whose shade will continue to grow over the years, and it is a sign not only of institutional health but also of strength and promise for the future.

I want to thank our Director of Advancement, Niesha Campbell, and her fine team in the Advancement Office, who have led us well this past year. I’m grateful also to Harmony Garges, who has chaired our Advancement Committee for many years and has pressed us on to reach many of the goals we hit last year. And to our many, many donors—those who gave modest, sacrificial gifts and those who made some of the largest gifts the school has seen—thank you all for your generous support.

Twelve years ago, Trinity School started the Trinity Scholarship Endowment to provide families with need-based tuition assistance. Trinity has since more than tripled the amount of financial aid offered, and our endowments have grown from $435,000 (2009–2010) to $1,444,000 (2021–2022).

Faculty and Staff Professional Development Endowment Non Nobis Endowment A portion of this endowment was gifted by Michelle and Brad Brinegar in honor and memory of Bowen Brinegar.

Non Nobis Endowment Immediate Impact, Sustainable Support In conjunction with flexible tuition, the Non Nobis scholarship provides annual support to racially diverse students and/or students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds who demonstrate financial need, to enable access to a rich Trinity education.

The aim is to help alleviate the financial hurdles related to attending Trinity while increasing the school's socioeconomic and racial diversity.
